David James Duncan's first novel has gained an increasingly wide audience over the years--some might even call it a following. This coming-of-age tale of Gus Orviston's search for the Pacific Northwest's elusive steelhead, a metaphor for Gus's internal quest for self-knowledge, appeals to all who cherish a good yarn and memorable characters. Uncle Zeke's colorful rendition of Gus's conception on the banks of the Deschutes River is itself worth the price of purchase.
Book Description
Since its publication by Sierra Club Books nearly two decades ago, The River Why has become a classic, standing with Norman Maclean's A River Runs Through It as the most-read fiction about fly-fishing of our era. Duncan's protagonist, Gus Orviston, is an irreverent young flyfisherman--a vibrant character who makes us laugh easily and feel deeply, and who speaks with startling truth about the way we live.
Leaving behind a madcap, fishing-obsessed family, Gus embarks on an extraordinary voyage of self-discovery along his beloved Oregon rivers. What he unexpectedly finds is man's wanton destruction of nature and a burning desire to commit himself to its preservation.
The River Why is a tale that gives a contemporary voice to the concerns and hopes of all living things on this beautiful, watery planet. It is the story of one man's search for meaning, for love, and for a sane way to live.

After the first few chapters, throw it away..........2007-06-20
Even though I hate fishing and have maybe done it once, the first few chapters of this book are humorous and interesting, in particular Bill Bob, Gus' younger brother. Unfortunately, Bill Bob's role is small to almost nonexistent as the book goes on and the author makes him say some pretty idiotic pseudo-philosophical/religious ramblings, such as a long discussion with Gus about how shadows are our guardians.
The book is largely predictable from the beginning until the end and it's almost like a bunch of authors get together to provide the same theme. The overall structure of the book is Gus starts to question life, including death, ultimate meaning, his meaning, and other philosophy 101 questions. And, of course, Gus ends up finding his meaning in the eyes of some backwoods hippie chick and has a religious experience (if you can call it that) while walking home from a long, incredibly drawn out trip down a river following a fish in his line.
I'm sure many people will see this book as being "deep" or "an interesting discussion of blah blah blah", but if you've even remotely dipped your foot in philosophy this book is hardly enlightening. I pushed through the book simply because I got past the half way point, then promptly threw it in the trash when I was done.
The River Why, by David James Duncan.......2007-01-18
Duncan delivers a heart warmingstory about family and love and even a little about fishing. While set in Oregon, near Portland and the coast, I believe that this "why" river might actually be in Northern California. You be the judge. His writing style is imaginative and fluid. I would reccomend this book to anyone who can read.
David James Duncan: a unique writer and excellent human being........2006-11-05
Dear reader of reviewers,
I am completely in awe of Mr. Duncan's writing. He writes as though he's lived 7 lives and had 14 different siblings, and 3 or 4 unique sets of parents. He transcends many writing barriers...his lines of words often have uniquely heightened states of dream-like consciousness. All lines and passages, stories and musings, conversations and descriptions, are very very alive. The lines of the River Why have a fascinating youthfulness. It is an excellent book.
The freshmen honor students at UM Missoula were supposed to read The Brother's K the summer before arriving in Fall 2002. But, for me, it was MUCH too thick for the time allotted. (I eventually finished that novel, and appreciate it very much, and reccomend it every time the word "book" comes up in conversation.) But, being a trout nut fly fisherman, I decided to tackle the relatively thinner "River." A good choice it was.
I have found myself, like the adolescent, going back again and again to the fishing scene where Gus meets his match. I actually get a rush from reading that part...when she jumps from the tree, my palms sweat. The dream sections with Bill Bob are amazing, like peering into the eyes of a glowing extraterrestrial cat. I wish William James could have read Duncan.
If baseball afficionados tend to love the Brother's K, fishermen will surely love this book. Indeed, I rate "River" as a valuble fishing book that can whack a fly fisherperson out of the intermediate rut and into creative angling. I would bet that Duncan is a supurb fisherman himself.
He is also a superb human being, even though he wriggled his way free when I asked him to go fishing with me, saying something like, "Well, we all have our favorite spots [to fish], and I'm sure you do too." Wanting to do far more than simply protect his fishing spots, he has a tremendous heart for the land and her rivers and forests and inhabitants, especially birds and trout. I feel very honored to have met him and read a few of his works. The River Why is my favorite novel, and I've read it and referred to it multiple times.
With continued thoughfulness and honing of leadership, Duncan could make a great fisher of men, for he holds the capacity to whack people's minds out of many ruts and into ones of positive personal and social change. He is rather disturbed by wars and habitat destruction and would very much like to see them altogether stop.
Bravo, David James, for providing us with your writings. The earth is very lucky to have you. I look forward to reading more of your works, especially the ones about water.
With Enthusiasm,
Clark Rector
Good, but a bit uneven.......2006-05-06
Although it took me a while to decide if I should keep reading, by the end of THE RIVER WHY I was glad I did. Duncan basically makes the argument that a life worth living arises from building loving connections with the people around us, and from loving God and respecting nature. I enjoyed the subject matter and in many ways identified with the narrator's way of experiencing the world, so ultimately I enjoyed the book.
But with that said, here's a little warning: In the acknowledgments Duncan writes that, without his editor, the book "would at times perchance exhibit a not unperverse and not unmaddening which is to say not unstupid verbosity not unlike this here." Unfortunately, I can hardly tell the difference between this self-deprecating example of bad writing and a number of equally indulgent passages in the book as published. The dialogue can be unconvincing in parts, the narrative gets bogged down at times, and while the book has some great moments, the execution can be a bit uneven.
Life Defining, Life Changing.......2006-03-07
I tend not to read philosphy. I suppose I don't trust others to define how I should think about life or God or death. Nor do I tend to read the writings of mystics and prophets, including the Holy Bible. I have little patience with priests and ministers and their rantings and their judgements.
This book, however, with all of its humor and anguish and conflict, has served for me as a philosophical treatise of the greatest depth of understanding and beauty. It looks at life in a totally unique manner - through the eyes of a fanatical fly fisherman - who learns that there is more to life than fishing.
As a fly fisherman myself, though perhaps not so fanatical, I fished right along side of Gus - wading his creeks and rivers in the cold, dawn mist or the still of evening with the Oregon chill and damp as our third companion. I suffered along with him as he found his way in the wilderness of the headlands rising up from the Oregon coast.
You don't have to be a fisherman to enjoy this book or to absorb its messages. You will laugh out loud, you will shed some tears and you will think a great deal about life and love and death.
Book Description
Millions of parents struggle to grasp what goes on in their kids" heads, on their computers, and among their friends. As an education correspondent for U.S. News he discovered astonishing crises and surprising truths. He focuses on four remarkable kids who run the demographic gamut: a southern girl whose privileges cannot save her from sinking into drug abuse and unsafe sex; the self-destructive son of teachers grappling with his anger about being adopted; a black kid from a tough New York neighborhood who is silenced by consuming depression; and a once high-achieving Florida girl broken by the death of her mother. While uncovering what drove these kids and their parents to Swift River, Marcus opens the black box of the teenage mind. As he reveals the intense, dramatic process that sets most of these kids right, he weaves a taut, absorbing tale and charts a path to hope that any kid, any parent, can take.
Customer Reviews:
If you're a parent worried about your teen, read this book.......2007-09-02
Although my children are grown, I'm still interested in learning about adolescence in this country, not the least because we now have four grandchildren. This book chronicles 14 months in a "therapeutic" school for "troubled" teenagers. It sheds a lot of light not only on how these types of school work with kids, but on the young people themselves, as well, of course, as their families. I am always taken by books that fairly portrays all sides of an issue. This book does this extremely well. While the therapeutic school in question is a profit making one, the teachers and some administrators are passionate in their desire to help the students. Unfortunately, as this is real life, while most kids seem to improve, not all do, and even among those who do, the "outcome" is not necessarily what the parents would hope. Sometimes there are truly miraculous "recoveries" and if I were a parent at the point of sending my child to this type of an institution, I could do nothing, but hold our hope that my child would be one of those. At the end of the book, the author outlines the key questions to which he sought the answers through writing the book. He addresses what he learned and can pass on to other parents through his writing. He also lists the warning signs the parents of the Swift River students he wrote about realized their kids had displayed by eighth or ninth grade. These are things that every parent should open his or her eyes to if they wish to help their kids sooner rather than later. (pg 314 of the hardcover edition).
Missed the point.......2007-03-26
This book didn't work for me. It didn't really have any workable suggestions. Just so-so.
Riveting and Helpful.......2007-01-12
If you have a troubled teen, this is a book you won't be able to put down. If you are thinking of sending your teen away for help, this book will give you lots of things to consider. If you'd just like some ideas on how to better relate to and maybe help your teen, there are endless ideas in here.
A real look into the minds of some troubled teens.......2006-11-23
From my standpoint, this book was not written to be an expose on therapeutic schools. It was not written to tell you what the staff/parents/etc could have done to have better results. It was not written to tell you how to fix your teen. Simply, it is a glimpse into the lives of some trouble teens that were sent to the same place at the same moment in time. And with that in mind - the author produce a moving and real portrayal of his observations.
As a parent, I found this book to be memorizing. Not only when I look at my teenager, but also when I remember my tremulous teenage years. Marcus manages to capture the heart of these kids and their individual struggles.
He does not offer solutions, but rather (and more accurately IMHO) states that sometimes there are no right and wrong answers. That raising kids does not always boil down to the latest research and/or ideology on parenting. In the end, teens must choose their destiny and quite blaming everything on everyone else. Only then, do they have a chance to overcome the multitude of challenges that one must face in our society.
Excellent book. I can not recommend it highly enough.
does not ask any questions.......2006-11-04
While this book comes across as a warts and all look at one of the big players in the teen help industry it fails to ask some really fundamental questions.
What would have been a less harsh and equally effectvie solution for jerome, the boy who had never touched an illicit drug and who only needed greater attention academically to thrive? Why was his mother not encouraged to look at the alternative school that he ended up at first? Is there a potential danger in putting a naive and socially struggling kid from the suburbs in a place with world weary drug taking sophisticates? Would it be culturally appropriate for a hispanic girl with devout catholic beliefs to have to confess her sexual sins publically?
This book also presents the kids relapses as an unfortunate accident without extensively delving into why. It strikes me that Trevor, the witty and easygoing Englishman never really learnt how to survive outside of the highly artificial world of ASR. Perhaps this was because it did not give him the self worth to refuse to engage in behaviours extreme enough to be lifethreatening or the practical tools to say no to a very real and strong temptation.
And what of the staff? Only one line was devoted to the fact that the enthusiastic English teacher left claiming the only thing she loved about the place was the kids. Why was this so?
And whhat is the effect of such a high turnover of staff on vulnerable troubled young people? DJ the ADD adoptee began a down hill slide when his favourite PE teacher Big Mike abruptly left.
Finally it does not question at all the morality of the programme. Actively punishing harrdworking kids such as Jerome for not turning in their friends when they confide in each other does not teach loyalty or strengthen friendship. It comes across as meanspirited and unjust. Does any school have the moral right to tell a mother what she should or should not put in a letter to her child?
While this book is quite clear about what goes on at a therapudic boarding school it asks no questions at all about the controversial aspects of the industry and presents it as without controversy

Book Description
While trapping in Montana during the 1880s, young Frank B. Linderman befriended the Kootenai Indians. At their campfires he heard about Skinkoots the coyote, Co-pee the owl, Frog Chief, and the other animal people. The telling impressed him, and in 1926 he was able, from long familiarity, to translate the tales for Kootenai Why Stories.
Old-Man appears as the flawed undergod known by different names to other tribes, a figure provoking more hilarity than reverence. The frog is another prominent character in this northwestern Indian lore. Also recognizable for their distinctive attributes are the grizzly bear, deer, rabbit, and skunk. Making sense of nature, the stories explain why the coyote has thin legs, why the moose has a moose’s nose, why the deer carries a black mark on the underjaw, and how the animals stole the springtime and put an end to winter. Linderman’s retelling captures the mystery and spirit of a forested world.

Book Description
Old-man, or Napa, as he was called by the Blackfeet, is an extraordinary character in Indian folklore. He appears in different guises: god or creator, fool, thief, clown. Subordinate to Manitou, the Deity, Old-man is both powerful and fallible. The world he made is marvelous but filled with mistakes. As a result, tension between the haves and have-nots explodes in Indian Why Stories. Because all creation shimmers with spirit, the consequences are cosmic.
Frank B. Linderman kept as close as possible to the Indian style of storytelling, using only the tales told to him by elders of the Blackfeet, Chippewa, and Cree tribes in the early days of the twentieth century. Indian Why Stories recalls a timeless scene: in the early evening a medicine man sits before a lodge fire, relating tales of the old days to attentive youngsters of the tribe. He tells about the animal people—the deer and antelope in a footrace, the dancing fox who convulses the buffalo with laughter, the white beaver and ghost-people, the huge snake in love with the moon, the sparrow hawk of conscience, and many more. These stories have a moral framework, revealing a reverence for life, emphasis on honesty, and the unity of creation.

Don't miss Kristi Gold's MISTAKEN FOR A MISTRESS. .......2005-08-19
A farm boy from Nebraska, Ford Ashton arrives in San Francisco with singled minded intent: do whatever it takes to get his uncle out of jail. Ford puts his integrity on the line hoping to free Grant, the only father he has ever known. Grant is being held without bail, charged with the murder of his own father, Spencer Ashton, Ford's grandfather.
Spencer Ashton had a long list of enemies, but the statement of his "Executive Assistant" Kerry Roarke has landed Grant in jail. Hours before his death she overheard Grant threaten Spencer. Based primarily on her word, the police are confident the right man is behind bars.
Ford conducts his own investigation. Certain his grandfather's mistress knows more than she is telling, he lies to Kerry about being an Ashton and sets out to seduce her. Unprepared for the flare of attraction, he discovers she is not the experienced seductress he expected. Even with Grant's freedom at stake, he buttons his pants and confesses the truth.
Ford's lies devastate Kerry. Sexually awakened for the first time since being attacked ten years ago, she walks away from the budding relationship. She confides to her beloved mentor expecting sympathy, but Millie praises Ford's family loyalty and respects the decisions he's made, especially the one that left Kerry hot and bothered and a long way from satisfied.
Kerry decides to help Ford, convinced a broken heart is better than a dead one. Hoping the memories of their intimacies will chase away her fears, she embraces her newfound sexuality by requesting to spend the week with Ford in his hotel?
Kerry wasn't like any woman Ford had ever known. He accepts the comfort she offers, never expecting to fall in love. Though he fantasizes about taking her to his farm, he doesn't believe she could ever be happy in Nowhere, Nebraska. Just like his mother, eventually she would abandon him.
Star-crossed lovers, Kerry and Ford investigate secrets, blackmail, and lies. They uncover a web of deception as deep as their growing love, but can they find enough evidence to free Grant? More importantly, how will they ever be able to walk away from each other?

Mistaken Mistress by Margaret Way.......2005-08-26
Description from the back book cover:

Shock becomes contempt when he realizes that he is far from immune to this beautiful woman himself! Even when her true identity is revealed, Lang can't let go of his suspicions. Surely Eden Sinclair is not as innocent as she appears? He will just have to get close to this mysterious beauty - persuade her to reveal every one of her secrets ...
Better than some others.......2004-11-01
By coincidence I got another book by Ms. Way-- I get these from the 50 cent section at Half Price books or from the library. This showed some development on the part of the author. Her characters in this novel were more compelling and the plot more intricate. The secondary characters were appropriately placed and added to the story. There were still lengthy description throughout the book that were somewhat tiresome to get through. The chemistry between Eden and Lang was dazzling and made the book work for me. There were too many descriptions of jewel-toned eye and hair color for my taste, but it was considerably toned down from The Bridesmaid's Wedding. As with the other novel, the setting was Australian. I actually noted far less vernacular in this novel. The conflict seemed genuine, character-driven, and I liked the non-stereotypical interference of secondary characters in the conflict. There were familial difficulties at work that didn't involve babies. On the whole, I found this book entertaining.

Nice Baird story.......2005-07-31
Rocco Andretti mistakenly believed that Marlene had been the late Paolo Rossi's mistress, and that she had borne Paolo a child. Rocco thought he could seduce Marlene into handing over everything Paolo had left to his son. Marlene had promised Paolo she would fight to make sure little Paul reveived his rightful inheritance. So it suited her to play up to Rocco's conviction that she was willing to warm the bed of any man who asked... for a while. She would string Rocco along only until she had proved he was double-dealing. This is a fav Baird.

Customer Reviews:
Side line Uh No!.......2007-09-26
This book was very basic. It had a great concept but the author just didn't no where to go with this story. Nikole was a woman with so many opportunities but they never seemed to go right for her she's been used up by two men for most of her life and she is just patethic. She never has any interaction with her son and her father a Judge who doesn't even want to be bothered. This story went no where and in the end you just feel sorry for played out Nikole.
Page Turner.......2007-08-31
When I first started reading this book I thought I would end up hating Nikole's guts but as it turned out I didn't and in her mind she really felt justified from the past sins of her family. I kind of felt sorry for Nikole she made some really stupid choices and they came back to haunt her. C.J. Domino's characters are so true to life. I absolutely loved how realistic she wrote each and everyone of them. I especially loved Royce and hated Terrance this book was very well written if I could give her more stars I would. I can't wait to read the next one she writes.
Sideline Ho.......2007-08-21
I loved the book...It kept me interested from start to finish
Ms. Domino is a great writer and I wish her much success
VALUABLE LESSON.......2007-07-25
THIS BOOK IS A DIFFENT PAGE TURNER THEN END IS WHAT GOT ME. NIKOLE THOUGHT SHE HAD IT MADE BEING THESE MEN SIDELINE HO BUT SHE WAS TAUGHT A VALUABLE LESSON BY SOMEONE SHE NEVER THOUGHT WAS HIPPED TO HER GAME.
Backstabbing.......2007-07-24
APOOO BookClub Rating: 4.5
What happens when you are always the chick on the side? What if the side you are on belongs to your best friend's husband? In C.J. Domino's Sideline Ho, Nikole Freeman is that chick and she stirs up nothing but deceit and drama. Who needs enemies when you have a friend like Nikole? Nikole has a lot going on. She seems to not only magnetize men, but be a magnet for horrible relationships: liars, cheaters, and abusers are her world. Nikole is a single mother. She has a son with Terrance, one of her current lovers, and no matter how he treats her, she will not let him go. Not even his certifiably crazy wife can stop her. Nikole is pregnant again. This time by Brian, her best friend, Bebe's, husband. And, believe me, that is not even the half of it. Every single aspect of Nikole's life is a battle. Is she reaping what she has sown? Will all her selfish and deceitful ways come back to bite her in the butt?
C.J. Domino did a wonderful job with Nikole's story. In Nikole, she created a character you will love to hate and even though you may pray to never have a "friend" like her, you hope she gets it together in the end. Sideline Ho is a definite page-turner. The pages and scenes were fast-paced and popped with scandal and drama. The characterization, imagery, and editing were strong. All the characters were lively and well-developed. Nikole and friends had so much going on at all times, I could not put the book down. I am definitely looking forward to future books by C.J. Domino.
