The novel's narrator, Stevens, is a perfect English butler who tries to give his narrow existence form and meaning through the self-effacing, almost mystical practice of his profession. In a career that spans the second World War, Stevens is oblivious of the real life that goes on around him -- oblivious, for instance, of the fact that his aristocrat employer is a Nazi sympathizer. Still, there are even larger matters at stake in this heartbreaking, pitch-perfect novel -- namely, Stevens' own ability to allow some bit of life-affirming love into his tightly repressed existence.
Book Description
A tragic, spiritual portrait of a perfect English butler and his reaction to his fading insular world in post-war England. A wonderful, wonderful book.

"In bantering lies the key to human warmth.".......2007-09-15
"A 'great' butler can only be, surely, one who can point to his years of service and say that he has applied his talents to serving a great gentleman--and through the latter, in serving humanity" (p. 117).
The Remains of the Day (1989) is the third novel by Kazuo Ishiguro (1954). It won the Booker prize in 1989. The book's title not only refers to the time of day (evening), when the narrator reflects upon his day's work, but also upon his mature age, from which he can reflect upon his life. The title also refers to the last grand houses of Great Britain's staffed with butlers such as Ishiguro's narrator, Stevens.
Stevens is a loyal English butler who has who dedicated his life to the service of Lord Darlington. Upon receiving a letter from an ex co-worker Miss Kenton describing her unhappy married life, and at the encouragement of his new employer, Mr. Farraday, an American, Stevens borrows a car to take a "motoring trip" to revisit Miss Kenton. Along the way (in a plot structure reminiscent of Bergman's Wild Strawberries - Criterion Collection) Stevens reflects upon his service to Lord Darlington, the meaning of "dignity," his relationship with his father, and his true feelings for Miss Kenton, whom he cherishes. It was because of his service to Lord Darlington that Stevens never acted upon his love for Miss Kenton. Although she offered him her love, he refused to even acknowledge her feelings by allowing himself to be "off duty" in her presence (p. 169). Rather, all his life Stevens has been consumed by the desire to be a "great" butler, which for him has meant embodying the ideals of service, dignity, and composure. Ultimately, The Remains of The Day is a poignant meditation upon missed opportunities and lost love; one cannot "turn back the clock," as Stevens puts it (p. 239). Ishiguro succeeds at drawing the reader into Stevens' loss as a result of placing duty above the needs of his heart. This is a perfect novel, one that I highly recommend, along with the 1993 Merchant-Ivory must-see film The Remains of the Day (Special Edition) starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.
One of my 10 favorite novels of the last 25 years.

A Devoted Professional.......2007-09-15
Brilliant novel about a butler so dedicated to perfection that he suppresses all human emotion in the quest for professional "dignity" and service to a great man. Feelings of love, grief, guilt & shame are banished in a life of service, and Stevens is ever searching for a way to improve, even in (what should be) casual "banterings" with a new American employer. However, traces of the butler's humanity emerge as he travels the countryside in hopes of having a former maid return to Darlington Hall. The true character of his former employer, the words of a letter from Miss Kenton, and his own past behavior are under scrutiny during his travels. I loved the subtlety & elegant melancholy of this novel. Thoroughly enjoyable.
The best of Ishiguro.......2007-09-03
In a world full of "good" books, Remains of the Day stands out as a truly amazing one. It speaks to Kazuo Ishiguro's talent that such a simple plot about a reserved English butler could be so engrossing and heartbreaking. The end of the book is especially powerful, and likely to leave any reader thinking about it long after they've finished. This is easily the best work of Ishiguro and, in my opinion, one of the best modern novels out there. Not to be missed.
Excellent.......2007-08-20
Ishiguro is an amazing writer and this novel is no exception. This work is presented first through memories and recollections during a road trip and later via an interaction at the end of the trip and reflections on that interaction. Ishiguro presents a question, which I will not ruin here, that everyone should ask themselves. Before you ask the question he presents you must read this book immediately.
Mr. Stevens is among the finest creations in English literature.......2007-07-11
The story of The Remains of the Day unfolds in a strange but effective way. The narrator is Mr. Stevens, the key character in the novel, and it is his voice that tells the increasingly revealing tale of his life as a 'gentleman's gentleman'.
However, Ishiguro does not simply allow Stevens to give us a memoir of his life from the perspective of advanced years. Instead Stevens records his motoring trip across England as if he is keeping an hourly diary, perhaps spoken into a dictaphone (if such technology had existed in the mid-1950s when the main story is set). This device allows us to experience each stage of the journey as it happens and, more importantly, Steven's growing self-awareness as he tries to piece together the significance of events from his past life.
The writing style reflects the period and the character of Stevens beautifully. As narrator, he seems unable or unwilling to acknowledge the emotions that always threaten to unseat the 'dignity' to which he aspires. In his conversations with Miss Kenton, he uses language to preserve decorum at all costs. Passion is his enemy and he fights a lifelong battle against it.
In Mr. Stevens, Ishiguro has given us one of the greatest creations in all of English literature. It is a wonderful accomplishment and the author fully deserves every plaudit and honour he has received for this masterpiece.

The Quintessential Reader's Guide.......2002-12-14
An impressive entry into the field of Reader's Guides, Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day by Adam Parkes is valuable on two levels: for the individual reader who wants to enhance his understanding of The Remains of the Day, it's like taking a Master Class; and for the book discussion group leader it's like stumbling on a gold mine of useful information.
In the hundreds of books we've discussed on SeniorNet.org/books, this one stands alone as the most in-depth, challenging, and comprehensive Reader's Guide offered. The chapter on Style, Form, and Irony is worth the price of the book itself. It leaves no stone unturned and turns up some you'd never have imagined.
This slim volume begins with a study of the author, moves to an analysis of the book itself, the issues and sub themes, comparative literature, the reception of the novel, some questions, a bibliography and recommended reading, and more. There's even a section on the movie Remains of the Day for comparison.
This is the first book by this author in this series I have ever tried, and I would buy anything by either again: it's that good.
An Excellent Book.......2001-11-04
This volume is a most distinguished contribution to the Continuum Publishing Group's new series of studies by international scholars of important contemporary fiction. Professor Adam Parkes eschews popular academic jargon and writes in a clear, straight-forward style, giving a brilliant and succinct analysis of this many faceted book.
The 90 page book will interest and inspire the general reader and, in particular, will prove an ideal tool for those teaching modern literature in universities or sixth-forms but, best of all, will send the reader back to the novel with his understanding and enjoyment enhanced.

dead-on tabs for Alter Bridge's first album.......2005-03-16
I've been playing guitar for 17 years, and I usually hate tab books. Why? Well, they're usually very innacurate. Not this one, though. I picked up Alter Bridge's debut CD, 'One Day Remains' back in the Fall of 2004. Creed was good, but I couldn't really stand the singer's attitude and stage presence...or his overdramatic vocals, for that matter. Needless to say, I was completely blown away by Alter Bridge. I was thoroughly impressed with Mark Tremonti's guitar work, and I added this CD to my growing list of "CD's that are go great I have to learn every song".
This book contains all the goods. All of the classic riffs are there, and the solos are tabbed out flawlessly. Mark Tremonti and Troy Stetina (Tremonti's guitar guru) worked through the songs and the book wasn't shipped until every song was signed-off by them. Get it! You won't regret it!

A convincingly written narrative of a long-time butler, with the complication of an ureliable narrator.......2007-01-22
Kazuo Ishiguro's novel THE REMAINS OF THE DAY is the story of Stevens, the butler at a large English house in Oxfordshire from the early 1920s to 1956, the time that the book opens. When his new employer, a newly rich American who now owns the estate, returns to his home country for a few days, he tells Stevens he should travel a bit within England. Stevens sets off on a journey to the West Country, intending to visit one Miss Kenton, his colleague on the house staff for many years before the war. While he travels Stevens, who narrates the novel in first person, recalls the whole breadth of his career.
The dialogue that Ishiguro writes for Stevens, the formal and business-like responses of the servant, is remarkably convincing. It is strict and unemotional and yet never becomes tiring to read. And the overt issues of the novel, such as the difficulty of reconciling work and personal life, and the great changes England went through during these decades are very engaging for the reader. While early reviews praised THE REMAINS OF THE DAY but questioned how much readers outside of England would get from the novel, I think that anyone with a basic knowledge of the country's history will appreciate the dramatic scope of years in Ishiguro's book.
But what is special about THE REMAINS OF THE DAY is its unreliable narrator. Stevens, so wrapped up in ideas of duty and dedication, speaks much about his career but little of the actual events that he has gone through. His love for Miss Kenton is deduced only through the actions and words of characters around him. Nor does Stevens give any judgement on the men he serves, for the shady dealings of his former employer are revealed only in passing as Steven recalls a young man who often visited the house. The novel is beautiful and entertaining on the first read, but it rewards rereading, for one can find instances where Stevens is not being honest about some crucial matter.
I was impressed by THE REMAINS OF THE DAY. As a fan of Gene Wolfe--I'm thinking especially of "The Book of the New Sun" or "The Fifth Head of Cerberus"--I've grown to love unreliable narrators. But anyone looking for a simple and dramatic story of how a man can dedicate his life to the service of others will find much to enjoy in the novel.

not too bad.......2007-06-27
At first I was a little iffy about the main man being an artist. But what he did with the dual personna and the heroine was clever. I liked the humor and sizzle in the dialogue between them. I just might look her up for the next book. For historicals, I'm hooked on Kleypas, Jeffries, Foley, Hoyt, and Moning. We'll see about alexander after I read another one of hers.
Cute & harmless fun.......2007-05-30
This book was a welcome relief from the dogs I'd been chugging through prior to reading this one. Cute story, sweet romance, characters are pretty interesting and it's nice to see an actual relationship based on respect and affection developing between the two main characters rather than one in which they basically just want to roll around on the floor trying to copulate in as many strange and varied ways as possible. Parts are a little silly (the guy pretending to be a mysterious artist that wants to seduce the woman--how could any woman be stupid enough to fall for this?), but the supporting characters were wonderful and the story ended in a predictable but fun way.
Effington Series .......2006-03-06
This is second book of the Effington Series. This one has the love match between Lady Gillian and The Earl of Shelbrooke. Lady Gillian (who is a widow) has to marry again before her 30th birthday and her two male friends make her a list of potential husbands. Lady Gillian asks Richard ~ The Earl of Shelbrooke to marry her but he will only agree if it is a 'real' marriage. I would recommend all of The Effington Series; The Wedding Bargain, Husband List, Marriage Lesson, The Prince's Bride, Her Highness, My Wife, Love with the Proper Husband, The Lady in Question, The Pursuit of Marriage, A Visit from Sir Nicholas, When We Meet Again (my favorite and conclusion of the previous earlier stories The Prince's Bride, Her Highness, My Wife sub-plots) and the most recent Let It Be Love.
Quite A List It Was...........2006-01-04
I have purchased a few novels by this author. Earlier works I really enjoyed by her were "The Wedding Bargain" (charming and fun), "When We Meet Again" (strong characters and plot), "The Lady in Question" (solid) and "The Pursuit of Marriage" (good). "The Husband List" is the next one I choose. Although I liked this book, it wasn't as good for me as the other ones I read.
Gillian is the heroine in this book and Richard the hero. Gillian was married for years to her childhood sweetheart and then he died in battle for the King. She was alone for many years but, recovered and her life continued with social outings, get togethers and family. She needs to find a husband by her 30th birthday or she'll loose a large inheritance. She creates a list of the best husbands in town with the help of her two best guy friends and it's off to the races. She meets with Richard as he tops the list - good looks, good manners, good family history and title etc. Little know to Gillian - Richard is a reformed rogue and rake and trying to be good since his father died. He has become honorable by taking care of his sisters, their family estate and the good family name. Richard is poor in cash - heavily in debt on the family estate - when they meet but, rich in spirit.
The story takes a number of twists and turns - who Richard really is, what he does for a living, how a famous painter Etienne and the arts plays into their relationship, why they both want the inheritance so bad and if the money can truly bring them together as a real husband and wife. I would have liked that they wait a little longer to be fully intimate and that there be more temptation and seduction before the big scene but, it was not to be. I also felt they spent a bit of time apart during their two month courtship and a bit of deception here and there but, I figure the author felt that added to the story. There was no formal engagement, wedding or follow up scene and I would have liked that to cement their relationship at the end as well.
Many of the side characters were appealing to learn about - Gillian's two male childhood friends Kit & Robin, Richards four sisters - Marianne, Jocelyn, Becky & Emma, etc. This author is good at making the characters interesting and the story develop in a detailed and enriching way. Her books are not hot, passionate and intense rather...they are light, warm, witty and usually fun to read.
You can't help but, be drawn into the story after you see the descriptions on Gillian's husband list such as: "Lord Tyndale - remarkably well spoken for a man with few teeth" or "Lord Runley - elegant in appearance but, with the intelligence of a small mutton chop" or " Lord Harkin - short bald and altogether unaware of his distinct resemblance to a hairless rabbit". See...you will smile and enjoy this story and understand why she HAD to choose The Earl of Shelbrooke and why she didn't regret it.
I look forward to reading her other stories...history has proven she's a romance author worth reading. I stretched it a little giving four stars on this one --- probably could have been 3 1/2 but...Ms. Alexander is so good over-all, she deserves the extra credit. Enjoy!
Just a perfect story!.......2005-10-17
I absolutely loved this book. In some of the others in this series I found the heroes a little flighty and shallow - and the women truly silly and way too overbearing. These two were perfect. what could be better than Richard, a reformed rake, with deep dark secrets? He was everything that Gillian could want in a husband thus she had him at the top of her list. But she did not even begin to know why he was the most perfect man for her. In addition to being sexy, handsome, a truly good and decent person he also had his secret life as the artist Toussaint. And Gillian was such a patron of artists - she had no idea that her two worlds would truly come together by offering Richard to share her fortune if they would marry. Richard had had some really challenging years financially which is why he had reformed and put everything into restoring his lands, paying of family debts and trying to make a life for his 4 sisters. He had always been enchanted with Gillian, but felt she was totally out of his league. She wants a marriage in name only. Well Richard could never agree to that so he agrees to court/seduce her. Actually both of his characters himself and the artist Toussaint both decide to seduce her. This to me was so interesting. It really made this book different than others - and I loved watching Gillian react to both of them - she was actually falling for both men, and it was the same man. Somehow deep down her inner self must have instinctively known that. And of course Gillian being the observant one, realizes they are the same. And when she seduces Toussaint to pay him a lesson well that was beautiful. This was not a silly book at all. It was full of heartfelt emotions and Richard proved to be what a deep, caring, sexy sensitive man he truly was - throughout. I absolutely loved this book. I found it by far the best so far in this series which I think I have read 1/2 now. I think readers of this series will find this at the top!

Easy to understand health guide for you and yours.......2004-09-23
Dr. Wilson is an internist who took time to write this book for women who want to maintain their husband's (and their own!) health in a simple, understandable way.
Topics include diabetes type II, prostate health, cholesterol and cholesterol-lowering drugs, heart conditions and more. The doctor covers supplements like fish oil--so this is not a book that only covers ethical drug treatment. Bravo. The book definitely goes into detail that you might or might not get from your family phsyician, and it does it in the most accessible, easy-to-grasp way.
Dr. Wilson felt so strongly that if women would have a readable guide for health, they could influence the health of their partner in a significant way. I agree. I can't see who wouldn't benefit from having this valuable book to read and refer to.
Great Guide for Women and the Middle-Aged Men in Their Lives.......2004-01-21
Many books on health either try to cover too much or simply focus in one small disease area. Of these two choices, I prefer those that look at one small area and cover it well. It had never occurred to me that a health book could also focus on the common health issues of one sex or the other, of a certain age. Your Husband's Health was a pleasant surprise in this regard.
Dr. Wilson is an internal medicine physician, and combines her experience with the statistics about what is mostly likely to go wrong with a middle-aged man. I found the book to be an eye-opener for me, and benefited from understanding more about how excess carbohydrates can cause my triglycerides to increase (along with my waistline).
The book begins with psychological issues, an area often not spoken of very much concerning middle-aged men. Dr. Wilson sympathizes by describing her own experience with being hauled into a lawsuit that didn't really reflect her culpability. The book goes on to cover depression and alcoholism.
The man sources of physical problems that cause early deaths are covered in the forms of:
Too little High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) in the blood (HDL helps remove cholesterol from artery walls);
Heart Disease;
Cholesterol in the body;
Hypertension (high blood pressure);
Cancer.
In a final section, Dr. Wilson looks at other nagging concerns including being overweight, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, urologic problems, sleep disorders, getting men to go in for a check-up, and being aware that men don't want erectile dysfunction as a side effect of a medication or medical treatment.
Dr. Wilson keeps it simple. If you can read at an 11th grade level, you will understand just about everything.
I did find her ideas about exercise to be unrealistic. She is able to discipline herself to do an hour of exercise a day before going to work. Good for her! But she feels that middle-aged men can be encouraged to do that also. I'm skeptical. Even when I'm feeling like exercising a lot, I seldom exercise every day. Many of my workouts last less than an hour, unless I find something I really want to read or watch on television while I am on the treadmill. Also, with age and arthritis (not to mention being overweight), exercise is an increasing challenge. I also thought that her ideas on weight loss are also a little optimistic. I graded the book down by one star for these reasons. In terms of making it clear what the issues are though, this is a five-star book.
As I finished the book, I found myself reformulating my diet to add even more vegetables and low-glycemic fruits . . . and low-fat protein.
Caring and compassionate book!.......2003-10-11
This book is at the same time immensely readable and yet quite profound. Dr. Wilson does a superb job of taking medical information that to the layman might appear quite complex, and explaining it in very readable and understandable terms. This is quite a gift! She talks TO people, not DOWN to them. I especially appreciated her candor in the chapter on "Regrets and Longings". By allowing her readers to feel her own pain at being horribly and unjustly accused of a professional error in judgement, she validated the pain of everyone who might find themselves in a very difficult position that took them totally unaware. This is a great gift she gives to her readers. She comes across as human yet totally professional.
A must read for anyone with a man in her life!!.......2003-09-16
Your Husband's Health: Simplify Your Worry List came out at a critical time for my husband and me. His best freind, Tom, and his wife were on vacation last month. Tom went swimming in the ocean, became very short of breath, and keeled over dead. It was a terrible shock to all of us, and has made us understand our own mortality.
I countered the fear for my own husband by studying the pertinent advice in this well written book. It now seems relevant what the doctor has been saying about cholestoral and blood pressure. I understand my husband's emotional changes and growth at mid-age much better.
Although the sections on deadly physical problems helped me through the crisis of Tom's sudden death, I probably benefitted most from "Regrets and Longings" because i better understand what I can do to keep our marriage happy and fulfilling for the both of us.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about a man in the mid-life age range, it may help you save his life.
The Answers I Needed to My Health Worries.......2003-09-10
I am 53 and read Your Husband's Health out of curiosity about my own
health. I seldom go to the doctor so most of this was new and
interesting information. I particularly liked the section entitled
Regrets and Longings. I wish my wife had read that ten years ago. The
book is well written, concise and kept my attention. There are some
wonderful stories and humor interspersed with the medical information.
I highly reccomend this to midlife men and their wives as a good place
to start understanding their own health and preserving that health for
later in life.
