Book Description

From the internationally bestselling author of London and Sarum -- a magnificent epic about love and war, family life and political intrigue in Ireland over the course of seventeen centuries. Like the novels of James Michener, The Princes of Ireland brilliantly interweaves engrossing fiction and well-researched fact to capture the essence of a place.

Edward Rutherfurd has introduced millions of readers to the human dramas that are the lifeblood of history. From his first bestseller, Sarum, to the #1 bestseller London, he has captivated audiences with gripping narratives that follow the fortunes of several fictional families down through the ages. The Princes of Ireland, a sweeping panorama steeped in the tragedy and glory that is Ireland, epitomizes the power and richness of Rutherfurd’s storytelling magic.

The saga begins in pre-Christian Ireland with a clever refashioning of the legend of Cuchulainn, and culminates in the dramatic founding of the Free Irish State in 1922. Through the interlocking stories of a wonderfully imagined cast of characters -- monks and noblemen, soldiers and rebels, craftswomen and writers -- Rutherfurd vividly conveys the personal passions and shared dreams that shaped the character of the country. He takes readers inside all the major events in Irish history: the reign of the fierce and mighty kings of Tara; the mission of Saint Patrick; the Viking invasion and the founding of Dublin; the trickery of Henry II, which gave England its foothold on the island in 1167; the plantations of the Tudors and the savagery of Cromwell; the flight of the “Wild Geese”; the failed rebellion of 1798; the Great Famine and the Easter Rebellion. With Rutherfurd’s well-crafted storytelling, readers witness the rise of the Fenians in the late nineteenth century, the splendours of the Irish cultural renaissance, and the bloody battles for Irish independence, as though experiencing their momentous impact firsthand.

Tens of millions of North Americans claim Irish descent. Generations of people have been enchanted by Irish literature, and visitors flock to Dublin and its environs year after year. The Princes of Ireland will appeal to all of them -- and to anyone who relishes epic entertainment spun by a master.

5 out of 5 stars Rutherford's books.......2007-08-06

Rutherford does a great deal of research and manages to weave a lot of real history into a fictional story with finesse. The sequel, "The Rebels of Ireland", taught me more about Ireland's current culture than reading a stack of history books would have done.

2 out of 5 stars Lackluster indeed.......2007-06-16

I had trouble finishing this rather boring history of Ireland. The characters are two dimensional and the whole story lacks connectedness. It was more fits and starts and then a change to a totally different time. It seemed the author was unsure if he was writing a novel or history and tried to cover too much ground at one time.

4 out of 5 stars Formulaic but not bad.......2007-04-08

This is my first read of Edward Rutherford and based on several other reviews of this work, it appears that measured against the standard of his previous work, this one is perhaps not as powerful.

Not having the benefit of those previous reads, I come at this perhaps from a different point of view.

As an amateur historian and genealogist, I came to this work expecting it to give some context and progression toward a better understanding of the history of Ireland and perhaps some insight into the lives and issues of its inhabitants. I was not disappointed in that regard.

In terms of comparison there certainly is a close parallel to the works of James Michener. It also reminded me of some of the works of Morgan Llewellyn, "Lion of Ireland" although, this work doesn't quite capture the reader's imagination in terms of the development of each character.
All that said, this work doesn't quite rise to the levels of the standard-bearers in terms of the genre or the region.

Still, it is not bad. The use of recurring themes, the character continuity across generations and the use of literary devices such as a drinking skulll passed through one of of the families is done reasonably well. Interesting as well for the genealogist. is the development of the character names over time, illustrating the development and change in family names that is typical of the region.

Not 5 star material, but again, not bad. The reader looking to benefit from the reading of this book in terms of their understanding of the history and the region will not be disappointed. The reader looking solely to be entertained, may find it more work than pleasure.

I personally enjoyed it, while recognizing it probably is not Rutherford's best work.

2 out of 5 stars Better Than A Sleeping Pill.......2007-02-08

I've read Sarum, London, & The Forest and really enjoyed them. This book is not nearly as good. It's just plain boring. I kept reading with the hope that the book would improve in the next chapter - needless to say my hopes were dashed! I will probably give his next book a chance, after all, every author should be allowed a "dud" now and then.

4 out of 5 stars Rutherfurd has a particular style..........2007-02-07

I both like and dislike Rutherfurd's style. Having read The Forest, which was decent but not one of my favorite historical novels, I was concerned about Rutherfurd taking on the sweeping history of Ireland, one of my favorite countries. I have to say, however, that he did a wonderful job--he included many things I have studied as well as many things that I had never heard of before. The one complaint I have is that it seemed like whenever I got to the point where I wanted to know more about the characters, he moved tens or even hundreds of years into the future, leaving me just a bit disappointed that I did not hear the whole of said characters' stories. I understood from reading The Forest that this was his writing style, but at the same time, that is the reason I could not give this novel five stars.

DECENT - no premarital sex [PMS]
As has been said, Patch stole the show. She sure was determined to defend her father, Seth Kendrick, against anyone who considered him a coward.

Seth soon realized that his daughter needs the influence of a woman to help tame her down.
The mystery behind Ethan Hawk, who had shown up about 6 months ago, his friendship with Seth, and the advent of the Masked Marauder teased Patch. Was Hawk the Masked Marauder?
Where did he disappear to at times in the night? Where did he keep the big Black Stallion.

And when Seth found out Patch's knowledge of his visits to Dora at the Medicine Bow Saloon "to satisfy his manly lusts" that was too much, he knew she needed to be taken in hand.

Molly Gallagher has a son, Whit and a daughter, Nessie that she fails to tell Seth about. Of course Seth failed to tell Molly about Patch.
She needed a home for herself and her children - but what a hoot! Patch, 12 and Whit, 10 were bound and determined to hate each other and their parents marrying. There was trouble in the offing. And boots in the river.

Pike Hardesty was mean as a rattlesnake on a hot skillet and the reason that there was no law in Fort Benton. [hey, I could find that place on an old map] Learned a bit more about the Missouri River - didn't know it ended up in Montana.

Pike had it in for Seth and his daughter. He was also the hired killer for Drake Bassett, the man that was selling rotgut to the Indians. The Masked Marauder was working at putting Bassett out of business. Pike's job was to kill the Marauder.

This is a great plot all the way around - plenty of action - plenty of passion - loving or otherwise - keeps you in thralled with the characters - We need more authors with this quality.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED with no reservations -

              5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2004-12-01

4 out of 5 stars Patch stole center stage!.......2001-01-09

Although, the story is a good romance and has good character layout, I think Seth's daughter, Patch stole the center stage! I was more interested in learning about Patch and Ethan - The Outlaw, then the main characters. I think I'll pick up The Outlaw's Bride and find out what happens between the two...wink.

This is one of my favorite of Joan's books, and i have read many. I'm definately in love with her Hawk's Way series and can't wait for more. This was the first historical of hers that i read and i absolutely loved it. I am a big fan of historical novels and but this one was one of the best. I love the western themes and i thought the family situation in this novel was great i laughed so much i was in tears. Patch was definately a favorite character and i loved the novel about her also. I wish i could give such high recomendations about some of joan's other historicals but i can't stand the ones about Earls and Dukes, i guess they're just not my thing. But this book is great for anyone who loves historicals, the old west,or joan johnston, or all of the above, Happy reading

This was my first western by Joan Johnston. It was good reading. The characters were so real. You could not help but feel Patches pain at the new family. She was a great charcter I can not wait for pay day so I can buy her story. Joan is now one of my top five authors.

3 out of 5 stars Four Novellas From One to Four Stars!.......2001-06-25

Four short stories and four different authors gave this book fast read quality but less than complete satisfaction for me with any of the four stories.

Since I must rate the entire book at once, I have to average the "stars." There are four stories of romance in strange circumstances. First is Bride's Song in which Dora Grant, a nurse and city girl has to decide whether to keep her good job in the little town or follow her heart and become what she has vowed she never will - a homesteader's wife. This one would get 3 stars.

Second, The Barefoot Bride is a touching, moving short story about a widow, Emma, whose odd mannerisms and talking out loud to animals and nature have caused the townsfolk to believe she is insane. She is shunned and feared and terribly alone, unable to keep her large farm going. She advertises locally and unsuccessfully for a husband of any kind just to keep her farm. Finally, Matt Tolivar, a widowed doctor, comes through town and is looking for a place to hide and start his life over. A very interesting relationship occurs and this is my favorite of the four novellas. I give it 4 stars.

Third, A Homesteader, a Bride, and a Baby concerns a city gal, Lorette coming to take over the raising of a baby orphaned by diphtheria and realizing she knows nothing about operating a farm turns to a male helper with resulting ugly gossip from the townspeople. IF I could vote on Chase Lankford alone this one would get 5 stars because of his strength, wisdom, patience and his faith in God. Since I have to consider the whole story, this one gets 1-2 stars from me.

The last, A Vow Unbroken, is a story of deceit and mystery, unusual deaths and a mail-order-bride story gone wrong. Very wrong. Pregnant, widowed Abby finds herself being exchanged from her expected housekeeper job to that of mail order bride, with horrible consequences and suspense. I give this one 2 stars.

These four short stories have a decided Christian theme with all decisions coming about only after those involved spend considerable time in prayer and Bible reading. All the stories take place in the 1800's and obviously from the title, on the prairie - just as it was being settled.

I think this book would make excellent required reading for female homeschoolers or church groups perhaps for ages 13 - 18.

              4 out of 5 stars Excellant.......2001-03-12

This is a must read for any Christian romance lover! This book includes four short stories about four different women who are planning on getting married. My favorite is the third story in which a pregnant widow goes out west thinking she is going to be a housekeeper. WRONG! Her aunt actually set her up with a man to be married to. Excellant. It's really nice to be able to be exposed to four authors. Great novel!

I love Jessica Hart's romances, and she does not disappoint here. Great story and characters, terrific details and a wonderful conflict--all beautifully dealt with. If you like romances that are both light and serious at the same time, then give this a try.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Insights!.......2007-03-18

This is one of those books with a theme many women have had to deal with. Meeting up with an old flame again. This author did it with fresh insight and a lot of soul searching. I recommend it highly!

                3 out of 5 stars enjoyable.......2002-07-04

This is the third book I've read from this author and it won't be the last. I really look forward to reading her books. The are all so filled with humor and passion and friendship and love that they make me feel happy when I've finished one.

This one takes place in Boston and in North Carolina. We first meet the hero, Saxon Blackwell being lectured by his evil grandmother. She is a very nasty woman who enjoys hurting people and is more interested in keeping up appearences of good taste than her own family's happiness. She sends Saxon to NC to find out about the turpentine trade and the money to be made there. She is holding the fate of Saxon's younger sister Desdemona over his head. Desdemona is mentally ill and the Grandmother has threatened to put her in an asylum for the insane which he knows would kill her. She has also decreed that he must marry soon and he goes along with her wishes just to get her off his back and to save Desdemona.

When he arrives in NC he meets up with an old friend who sends him off to rest a bit in the Appalachian mountains. He soon finds himself is the prettiest spot he's ever seen. When he's attacted by a bear he is rescued by the heroine of the story, Chickadee McBride. She is a local and is the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. Her ways are strange to him as his are to hers but they become close friends duringhis stay. She speaks so plainly about things that he finds himself laughing more than he ever has. He soon realizes that he is attracted to more than just her spirit. He wants her and she him so passions flare. He decides that she must marry him but she declines because they don't love each other. They go round and round on the subject untilhe finally convinces her to do it.

They marry and he takes her back to Boston, where she doesn't fit in at all. She stands out like a sore thumb and the grandmother makes sure her life there is a living hell. She tries everything she can think of to get rid of her but Chickadee has more spunk that she's even encountered before. Chickadee soon finds friends and allies in unexpected places and also realizes that she loves Saxon and proceeds to show him all the love she can.

This tale is such an enjoyable one that you almost think the characters are real. Rebecca Paisley has a wonderful way with speech patterns that you can actually hear Chickadee speak. I wish this author would write more books. I plan to get all that I can.
