Ray Bradbury's first short story collection is back in print, its chilling encounters with funhouse mirrors, parasitic accident-watchers, and strange poker chips intact. Both sides of Bradbury's vaunted childhood nostalgia are also on display, in the celebratory "Uncle Einar," and haunting "The Lake," the latter a fine elegy to childhood loss. This edition features a new introduction by Bradbury, an invaluable essay on writing, wherein the author tells of his "Theater of Morning Voices," and, by inference, encourages you to listen to the same murmurings in yourself. And has any writer anywhere ever made such good use of exclamation marks!?

some gems with some clunkers.......2007-10-08
I found the first story to be mildly interesting, if a little predictable, and from there it seemed to slow down a bit. However, I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did, as this collection contains some excellent stories that really build up the suspense until endings that send a shiver through you and leave you feeling (contentedly) disquieted. My favorites were: Skeleton, The Jar, The Small Assassin, and The Scythe. (Maybe add The Wind to this list, on the basis of its ending.)
However, unfortunately, there are a few stories that I felt were a real let-down, and might be better skipped on first reading. Often these stories had some potential building up, but closed on a note that seemed out of nowhere and didn't satisfactorily resolve the strangeness and supernatural aspects of the story. The most egregious was the Jack-in-the-Box, which I would definitely skip, The Emissary and The Cistern were also a little disappointing.
If you enjoy Twilight-Zone/Alfred Hitchcock Presents - type of dark stories, often with a strong obsessive/psychological component, then I would definitely recommend this collection, on the strength of the stories I mentioned in the beginning.
read and reread.......2007-03-16
A gem. Thematically, the stories are not all that close, but they have great suspense, drama, interesting characters. Memorable.
A small collection of varied worlds.......2006-03-31
I liked this book. Some of the stories veer a little too far into fantasy for my taste--with vampires, et cetera--but many of them are very original, and very memorable. Ray Bradbury, as anyone who's read "Dandelion Wine" can tell you, is not just a hack writer with good ideas: he's also a terrific writer, period. His prose is lovely; he could write any genre he wanted to. He could write about nothing and it would probably have good enough tone, style, sound, and metaphors to pull it off. But he doesn't. Instead, he crams his stories full of the weird and the unusual: a jar full of something that everyone obsesses over, a baby that kills, a man who finds himself becoming the grim reaper.
He finds the strangest plots, and then wraps them in beautiful words and gentle insights.
Not every story in this book is a classic. Some are trite and kind of dull--the story of the winged man, for one, and the story of his family--but most are well worth reading more than once.
When I finished this book I felt as if I'd just gone on countless journeys--each story made an almost perfect little world, and there was an undeniable feeling of whiplash from going from one world to the next to the next. I felt as if I'd just lived a long time, a long weird series of lives. And it was a good feeling.
What in the country?!?!?.......2006-02-27
I only read two stories: The Small Assasin and The Dwarf. If I wasn't required to read them, I would have put this book down weeks ago. I have to admit the Bradbury does have some excellent imagery, but in no way is the writing interesting at all. I tried to keep an open mind as I read this novel...but I really could not bring myself to enjoy it. Don't read this unless you HAVE to...or you are extremely bored.
Great even decades later.......2005-11-05
Creepy. The stories stay with you long after you put the book down. Certainly one of the best short story collections I have read in a long time and I try to read 'em all. Enjoy.

A super-steamy page-turner.......2007-10-05
Mac has resigned from the FBI after marrying the virginal, sensual Keiley. He's left D.C. and returned with his wife to his home town, where they live in a beautiful, serene farm. He's also resigned his D.C. membership in the Club - a unique gathering place for men who want to share their lovers with another man ("a third"); as well as left behind his closest friend and regular "third", FBI agent Jethro Riggs.
The story begins three years into Mac and Keiley's marriage. Mac's insides are in turmoil. Though he loves the hell out of Keiley, he feels something is missing. His wife isn't getting the whole of him, and he knows he could give her so much more pleasure, passion, sensation, if Jethro joined their bed as their third. What's more important, his gut tells him Keiley wants it, too, though she's afraid to face her own evolving sexuality, her own emotions. As Mac invites Jethro to the farm for a visit, we get to ride a roller-coaster of raging emotions and hot sex escalating in its wanton sensuality from one scene to the next.
As an old FBI case of Mac's follows him to his home town and a stalker targets Keiley and him, the stakes go even higher.
This was my first "Bound Hearts" book, as well as my first Lora Leigh. Having read through the introductory paragraphs, from the moment I plunged into Mac and Keiley's life, I couldn't stop turning the pages. The characters were wonderful, the sex super-hot. When Jethro, Mac's best friend, joined in, my core temperature bounced about a thousand degrees higher. The subplot of a stalker added just the right kind of spice. If you're in the mood for a super-steamy contemporary/suspense read, and don't mind three making a whole, pick up this book.
Forbidden.......2007-10-04
Lora Leigh is incomparable when it comes to Romantica. I don't even read the synopsis anymore. If her name is on it, I want the book. I was not disappointed. Great, strong characters, intriguing plot and the sex, well, to die for.
Wonderful series.......2007-09-29
I had to wait quite awhile to get all the books in this series, I am glad I persevered, This was not my normal love stories, but I soon became quite tied up in their lives. Its not an easy subject to make into love stories but this writer has the knack.
Repeat.......2007-09-28
This book could have definitely been cut down to size. It seems like the characters just kept repeating and repeating themselves. Also the story moved slow and kinda boring the first half. Towards the end the action finally picked up and you can wrap it up, otherwise I was skipping lines and paragraphs just to get through it. Not one of her best. She needs to stick with the 2 stories in one book and keep it spicy.
HOT EROTIC,SEXY BOOK........2007-09-24
MY WIFE AND I BOTH REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. WE COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.
WONDERFUL STORY LINE ALONG WITH THE HOT SEX.EROTIC,SEX STIMULATING.
WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Books Like This Should Be "Forbidden".......2007-09-23
Apparently there are enough easily-titillated people with more money than taste to warrant the existence of this book. This is the second installment in Small's "Pleasures" series (her and her series...yikes). At this point there are two others in print and another to be released next year. I will read none of the others, not even for a laugh.
I'd say I could eat a bowl of Alpha Bits and crap a better novel, but that would be childish. Small, who heretofore has written historical "romance" (history with sex is more like it), has branched out into contemporary erotica. Or so we're told. If you've read any real erotica, you'll recognize this for what it really is--a goofball romance with some "naughty" language, action, and sex toys thrown in. Erotica is the exploration of the human psyche and its relationship with sexual pleasures. It is felt, not dictated. Erotica maintains that feeling throughout. Any relationship between characters is secondary to the feeling. I think it's understood that erotica is not love stories. Erotica doesn't even need to have a plot.
"Forbidden Pleasures" is not erotica. Novelist Emily Shanski is told by her publisher that her next book must be "sexier" if she is to keep her contract. But how can she write sexy (whatever that means) when she herself is a virgin, pure as the driven snow? I suppose imagination and actually talking to other people isn't an option. Emily has to get that cherry popped, and who better to do it than (insert standard adjectives of handsome masculinity here) Michael Devlin, her new editor. And then there's something called the Channel which is like a sexual fantasy holodeck for bored suburban housewives and is provided by the local cable company. Anyway, between the fleshy Michael and the fantasy Justin Malincourt, Emily learns all about sex, sexuality, and how to write a sexier book.
I'll just touch on a few points.
I really hate reading about two characters having phone sex. Where's the point in that? I'm already an observer, am I not? How much further removed do I need to be?
Small has no handle on the standard modern vernacular--that is, she doesn't know how people in the 21st century actually talk. All of her characters have the same soulless speech patterns of the very wealthy and the very distantly removed from...oh...the people who would buy the book perhaps. She has no sense of slang at all. We're all over the f-word by now, I hope. I almost choked on my root beer when, while preparing some dinner, Michael asks Emily what he can do to help, and she suggests he toss the salad. In my corner of the world, that's slang for masturbation.
Please, I mean no offense to people who enjoy unorthodox sex. All acts of love and pleasure are fine by me. In this book, Michael presents this as something Emily should experience. Personally, I can live without it. I think plenty of people can live without it. But Small seems obsessed with what she's called in other books the "rose hole" and the "portal of Sodom". I don't think an author scores kinky points simply by having this in a book. It kind of has to fit the mood, the tempo, and the people who are doing it.
The New Jersey Romance Writers (whoever they are) gave this thing the 2006 Golden Leaf Award for a long contemporary novel. It must have run unopposed.
Between Okay and Good.......2007-09-17
Well, where to start? I loved the first 50 pages and read them very quickly. I instantly loved the spark between Mick and Emily and was rooting for them from their first meeting.
Then it took a turn. Emily is over 30 and a virgin. Okay, that didn't bother me. What bothered me is she didn't seem to know anything. I mean, come on. In this day and age? The woman writes romance novels for cripes sakes, and doesn't know anything? Then there was the whole immediately going into bed factor ~ seemed to kill the chemistry for me right away. And don't get me started on the Angel Face thing. Blech.
After suffering through pages 50-60, I started liking the book again. Save for the fact that Emily, a 31-year-old woman living in modern times didn't know a woman could get pregnant from having sex the first time. Again, give me a break. Other than that, I found myself smiling at the dialogue between Mick and Emily again and actually enjoying the story.
One other tiny thing that bothered me was the fact that Ms. Small tends to repeat herself ~ almost to the exact sentence. I would read a sentence that had already been written 50 pages prior. I had to overlook that and just continue on.
This book could have gone either way with me ~ today, I was in a more forgiving mood and chose to overlook the little things that may have turned this into a wallbanger. I'd say it was somewhere between Okay and Good. I liked it and it kept my interest for a day of reading, which was something I hadn't done in a long time. I've already ordered the other two books in the Pleasures Series and am hoping that I'm not disappointed
A little hard to read..........2007-09-03
I found that the story was quite boring. The plots were thin and the characters were quite immature when it comes to their bedroom manner. I understand Emily being a virgin and all but seriously, she was acting a little um, highschool-ish? I've read alot of romance whose heroine were all virgins but not one of them acted like Emily. You would think with being an observer of the Channel and a romance writer, even if they were more on the sweet side then erotic, she would have more inside view then what she saw in sex ed class in grade schools. Alright, I guess I can give her a little benefit of the doubt but definitely not Michael who supposedly a ladies' man. The only characters I like were Rina, Dr Sam and Aaron. I was quite displeased with Savannah and Reg. I mean how can she love someone who cheated and lied to her? I'm ok with relationships like the one Lora Leigh wrote about in her version of Forbidden Pleasures. That's ok to me since all party agreed and were open and honest with each other. But with Savannah and Reg, she didn't approve but she won't say anything cus she "loves him". That just totally ruins it for me in this book. I was even more bothered by it then Emily's sexual inexperience that seems more childish then adult.
Anyways, it took me 2 days to read this instead of my usual one night or half a day. It's a good thing that I read Sudden Pleasure first and enjoyed that one else I would write this series off my list.
Fun...but very thin plot.......2007-08-08
I agree with all of the not-so-pleased comments that have already been posted. This book would not have been published if it didn't have an established author's name on the cover.
I will admit it is a page turner, to some extent. But, in the end, there is really no substance here. The heroine is a 30+ year old virgin. That's fine, but she then jumps with both feet into having sex with Mick AND has no inhibitions, no matter what Mick suggests. She makes that transition waaaaaaaaay too easily. Much of the dialogue is stilted, particularly among the two main characters. In fact, I think the secondary characters were much more realistic and interesting.
And the ending...the placement of the ring...how unimaginative!!
Save your money, skip this one.
Horrible!.......2007-06-16
I couldn't wait to read this book. I've been reading Bertrice Small for years. She's my favorite author. I never thought I would give any of her books less than 4 stars but I have to give this book 1 star. It was that bad.
I read the reviews before I bought it but I ignored them because people gave "Memory Of Love" and "Bedazzled" bad reviews too, but I loved them. The reviews are not wrong. This book is terrible. I couldn't even finish it. I read the first few chapters and was shocked at how bad it was. I hated all of the characters in this book, especially the heroine. She was so immature - I couldn't believe that she was over the age of 30. She's my least favorite heroine of all time. Private Pleasures was not one of her best books, but I did enjoy it enough to finish it. It was a lot better than this book. The parts I hated the most was when the herione visited The Channel. I skimmed through those parts, because, they were so boring. I think Ms. Small needs to stick to historicals.
Do not let this book stop you from reading other books by Bertrice Small. She's usually a great writer. The O'Malley Series, Lara Series, Beloved, Blaze Whyndam and Hellion (just to name a few) are really good. I'm not sure why she decided to put out such a bad book. Even though this book was bad, I am looking forward to reading the latest book in the Border Cronicles series that comes out later this year.

Delightfully Forbidden!.......2007-02-28
Forbidden Pleasures is a delightful blend of two separate and sexy historical romances with interesting, well-developed story lines, strong characters, and well-written erotic love scenes, providing a pleasurable read.
In Love's Revenge, a search for vengeance turns to passion and desire, as Quentin Blackwell, the Devil of Devlyn returns to his lands years after the severe betrayal of the woman he once loved. Eleanor had accused him of rape and then once her family stripped him of his lands, married another. Upon Quentin's return he is astonished to be visited by Eleanor's older spinster sister, Sophie Hamilton. Sophie has her own revenge in mind, as the man her sister married just happened to have been her fiance. Left alone, unmarried and emotionally and physically abused by her father, Sophie sees an opportunity to not only team up with Quentin, but to also experience the passion she has long been denied in her spinsterhood. She offers Quentin his revenge if he will teach her passion. Quentin finds bedding and using the daughter of his enemy as a means for satisfying revenge, but he did not realize that desire and passion has the ability to spin out of control. Quentin finds himself in an arranged marriage with the desirable Sophie. Sophie discovers her newfound passion and desire are turning into love. She struggles against the physical desire and pleasure found in Devlin's arms, not wanting to be emotionally hurt by the younger, seemingly heartless sensual man. When Devlin realizes the kind and passionate Sophie is much more than he deserves he struggles with his feelings of love over vengeance. Can Love's Revenge, so pleasurable and forbidden, turn into something more? A well-written, sexy story that is absorbing and difficult to put down.
In Love's Portrait, the beautiful, luscious, intelligent widow Julia Westgard discovers freedom in her newfound widowhood. She raises society's eyebrows by becoming a business partner with the dashing handsome rogue of the Marlborough Set, Morgan St. Claire. She also holds a little scandalous secret. She has posed nude for a portrait, a symbol to her of her newfound freedom from a loveless and nonpassionate marriage. Little does she know that Morgan has had the pleasurable opportunity to have seen this portrait and is planning the right opportunity to get Julia into his bed. The opportunity presents itself when Julia decides to auction off one of his handkerchiefs for charity. Julia sees this as an opportunity to get back at an infamous rake known for loving and leaving women. When Morgan catches her in his bedroom stealing the handkerchief he wages a night in her bed and wins. But he soon discovers winning is not as sweet and refuses to bed an unwilling Julia. A sensual courtship begins and the desire builds with Julia succumbing to his sensual advances. They spend many passionate moments together and soon Morgan realizes he loves Julia and desires more than her body. Believing him to be the rake and rogue he always has been, Julia flees from him and his offer of marriage, a marriage she sees would be similar to the one she previously felt trapped in. Can Julia hold out against Morgan's pleasurable seduction? Will Morgan prove to Julia that his love is as true as his passion? Love's Portrait is a sensual pursuit that will leave the reader breathless.
~Hot & Sexy~ Delightful! .......2007-01-10
Ms. Burns has done it again!
As a reader *and* writer, I found both stories in Forbidden Pleasures to have unique, engaging storylines with delightfully sexy, believable characters. If you're a mature reader, looking for exciting Erotic Fiction, these stories will sensuously awaken your emotions.
This one's definitely a "keeper."
Ms. Burns simply gets better and better.
sophmoric plots.......2007-01-09
Why is this even considered as worthy of printing? It is akin to a high
school read plus some naughty words thrown in for shock value. While I
understand this is supposed to be erotic romance as opposed to romantic fiction,I found the story line so unbelievable and the rate at which the characters "fall in love" (or in lust, more correctly) that it made me want to remind the writer that the true nature of sexual love does not lie in the southern region of our anatomies. A totally amateur work and
I strongly suggest you avoid it.
Victorian Naughtiness - Oh, My!!! .......2006-02-14
This anthology of two of Monica Burns' novellas LOVE'S REVENGE and LOVE'S PORTRAIT are must reads for those who like their sensual appetites served to a palette that can appreciate tasteful, intelligent, and highly stimulating sensual encounters.
In LOVE'S REVENGE - Sophie Hamilton, at forty-one is the eldest daughter of Baron Hamilton, and wants her own form of revenge. Sophie looks to the Devil of Devlyn as both her means of revenge and a last chance of discovering the secrets of the flesh. When years ago, Quentin refused to marry her sister, Sophie's father and her sister conspired to steal Sophie's fiancé. After years of callous disregard; lack of affection from her father, and the unforgivable betrayal of her sister, Sophie was ready for payback. Most of all Sophie, who was firmly on the shelf would finally get the chance to experience the physical intimacy between a man and a woman and the Devil of Devlyn would be just the rake to do it.
** LOVE'S REVENGE - was a totally mesmerizing read as the last thing either of the two protagonists thought to discover was that the all-consuming love they found with each other would actually turn out to be the best revenge of all against the people whose evil machinations thought to destroy them. Taking an older woman of forty-one and pairing her up with a notorious rake of thirty-two -ultimately bringing said rake to his knees with lust - You Go Girl!! My God - what a splendid read!
In LOVE'S PORTRAIT - Commissioning a nude portrait of herself was akin to therapy for Julia Westgard in taking control of her life in proving to herself that she was no longer the meek, mild and submissive woman that her abusive and beastly dead husband had molded. It was a self-affirmation - not one that she wished the public to see. Fate had a hand in allowing at least one person to see that portrait. The very notorious rake, Morgan St. Clair and he burned; he yearned to find the woman in the portrait whose beauty and sensual pose inflamed him. It was to Morgan's utmost delight that he would soon discover her as she surfaced as his very prim and proper business investor Mrs. Julia Westgard. Morgan planned a calculated campaign to bring about the metamorphous of the woman he saw in `Love's Portrait' to life as the woman he wanted not only in his bed, but the woman he wanted in his life.
** My, my, my! Such wonderful Victorian naughtiness! Not only does Burns instill her characters with high sensuality, but she presents a very romantic love story to boot! Her characters are honest in their feelings towards each other and Morgan's ability to demonstrate his love for Julia was as beautiful as her ultimate act of trust was for him. Reading sensual historical romance from Monica Burns is like savoring the taste of a very fine and rare wine. This is definitely highly recommended reading for lovers of very fine sensually stimulating reads!
Book Description
Uplifting eroticism while demolishing myths, "Erotic Book" offers a fresh and exhilarating perspective on the sensuality and beauty of the female body. The author provides readers of "Erotic Book" with insights on what aspects of the female body actually arouse men, and why almost every woman potentially possesses an intensely erotic body. "Erotic Book" rebels against the objectification of women, and presents an understanding of female sensuality that integrates the feminine mind with the feminine body, creating a transcending erotic presence.

One man's views.......2007-07-18
I'm captivated by female beauty, so I was interested at the prospect of a book dedicated to the subject from an artist's perspective. Unfortuately, the author has framed some of his statements to be representative of "most men." It's annoying and sloppy. For example, commenting that many women now shave their pubic hair, he observes that "most men" actually prefer women with pubic hair (without even broaching whether its trimmed or groomed). He fails to acknowledge that preferences vary widely and offers no data to support his statement. He has a section on body piercing where he goes to some lengths to explain how he's finally come around to accept the idea, but only in certain parts of the body, and again women are better off unadorned. Opinions on that subject also vary from person to person. Rather than discussing his preferences as strictly his own (e.g. "As a painter, I prefer 'x' because...") or doing some actual psychological or historical research, this book comes across as the organized ramblings of one opinionated man (whose opinions I don't share) - not intelligent discourse about a beautiful, age-old topic. I returned the book.
A poetic hymn to the female body.......2006-11-12
This slim book is not just a delightful account of the female body, but a passionate hymn to the beauty of woman.
Intensely sensous, but not pornographic at all, it lovingly examines and exalts all the components of her body, underlining their significance from an aesthetic and erotic viewpoint.
It should be required reading for all photographers and painters alike as an introduction to the appreciation of the female body.
Art teachers had better leave anatomy manuals on the bookshelves from time to time and refer to this book as they teach life drawing classes, to arouse the students' genuine interest in what they are drawing.
Erotic Book: Erotica Secrets of Sexy Female Bodies for Men And Women.......2006-08-01
Erotic Book is an open and honest study of the female form, through the eyes of the author. Filger's background in Fine Art Photography is evident by the exquisite detail in which he views every nuance of the female form. Anyone who does not see the beauty in their own body needs to read this book.

Awesome Book About Women's Bodies & Female Sensuality.......2006-07-04
This is an amazing book, more so as the author is man, but one with unusual perception when it comes to understanding the female psyche about their bodies and sexuality. Sheldon Filger presents the entire female body as an artistic tapestry, and enables the reader to understand the heavenly beauty that is the body of a woman. I really felt empowered after reading this appropriately-named "Erotic Book." Women will truly feel liberated after reading it--and men will also have new insights, and a wonderful gift for their special woman.
Erotic Book - Learn the Secrets!.......2006-05-14
I found this book very refreshing. Every woman should read this! Learn what turns men on about our bodies before you consider any augmentation, you will be pleasantly surprised. Thank you Sheldon Filger for telling us something we really needed to hear.

has a little bit too much imagination.......2001-09-22
Ianthe Brown went on a vacation to recover from an accident. She meets Alex Considine and sparks fly. There's this mutual sexual attraction but both of them try to resist it because they know there's no hope. Alex is a millionaire because he created a very profitable computer company and Ianthe is a marine biologist that had recently began to work on film. Already that is an obstacle for them to overcome but wait there's more....because Alex is the lost Crown Prince of Illyria.
I didn't like this story too much because it seems so far fetched. I like my romances to be based on reality more, so then the story could take place more easily in my mind. Generally, I guess this was okay. There was passion and romance in this book but the only thing that turned me off was that the story seemed so unrealistic, although I did like the Crown Prince part.

A book for those who like stupidity in their characters ..........2002-10-15
There are two books in this novel and I guess both are pretty mediochre in my mind ...
The first book 'Forbidden Pleasures' deals with a young indian working on a large hacienda in Mexico, I guess in the early 1900's, and he is perversly I could truly say molested by the beatifull young and widowed owner of the hacienda ..... Miguel escapes and ties up with a truly distastefull, lazy and stupid Spaniard living in the Mexican badlands ....
The story deals with their adventures and I would have thought Miguels yearning to extract revenge but let me tell you I don't think that any of these people had enough brain power to form a coherant thought ......
If you like stupidity youll lve this book
The second book 'The Musician ' deals with a young Gus Toleman who is unable to make any money with any of his talents except pleasing women of any size and age. If you like dialgue like ...
'Oh my Gott' and 'Oh, Mr Toleman you are the lufliest man ....'
Sorry it is really knd of ho hum for me ..
