In Chris Bohjalian's fine follow-up to Midwives, individual judgment and the unconventional again clash with the medical and legal forces of tradition. In rural Vermont, two years after his wife's sudden death, an exhausted state's attorney can hope for little but a quiet life with his 4-year-old daughter. Leland Fowler's only goal is a cure for the common cold--his own, that is, which has dragged on for months. As it turns out, his appointment with the town's only homeopath will set to rights his physical and emotional symptoms. At least for a while.
Alas, another of Carissa Lake's patients isn't quite so lucky. Despite her warning that Richard Emmons not go off his prescription drugs, he does exactly that. In fact, during an asthma attack, he takes the homeopathic law of similars--the belief that "like cures like"--to an entirely new level. This tragedy embroils Carissa in an investigation of her practice and forces Leland into a decision that is to alter not only her life but his:
Upstairs, my daughter slept. And for a long time we sat on the floor before the tree, neither of us saying a word, as I worked out in my mind exactly what I would have needed to prosecute this case if a summer cold had not lasted into the fall, and I had not met Carissa Lake. Once I knew, nothing seemed quite so hopeless, and I began to sketch aloud for her exactly what we would want to create in the morning, and exactly what we would want to destroy.
Chris Bohjalian is an artist of the small but seismic instant. As this gripping novel proves, he knows all too well the awful daring of a moment's surrender. --Siobhan Carson
Book Description
"
The Law of Similars is fast-paced and absorbing. Few writers can manipulate a plot with Bohjalian's grace and power."-The New York Times Book Review
From the number one bestselling author of
Midwives comes this riveting medical thriller about a lawyer, a homeopath, and a tragic death. When one of homeopath Carissa Lake's patients falls into an allergy-induced coma, possibly due to her prescribed remedy, Leland Fowler's office starts investigating the case.
But Leland is also one of Carissa's patients, and he is begining to realize that he has fallen in love with her. As love and legal obligations collide, Leland comes face-to-face with an ethical dilemma of enormous proportions. Graceful, intelligent, and suspenseful,
The Law of Similars is a powerful examination of the links between hope and hubris, love and deception.

Ho hum homeopathy.......2007-08-04
A 3+ really. Maybe even a 4-. This book will keep you entertained if you are rather easy to entertain. I liked Carissa Lake, homeopath and quirky lady. You wish these people well; and recognize the trials and tribulations of living in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. Nice portrayal of that life. But somehow the story never catches fire.
Disappointment.......2006-08-31
So disappointed. I couldn't put down Midwives and thoroughly enjoyed Buffalo Soldiers. Both had realistic characters and thought-provoking situations. But this story felt like another author's work, or pehaps one of his earlier works. I even double checked the print date. Sure, the well-developed ethical dilemmas are there, but his main character was so pathetic and unrealistic. Still can't believe Bohjalian had the widower fall so hard and fast for a woman he barely knows, and I could do without the smutty description under the Xmas tree. Chris, you can do so much better!
Not very compelling.......2006-03-19
I'd read author Chris Bohjalian's "Before You Knew Kindness" and, although liked the story and characters......thought the actual nuts and bolts writing was mediocre.
I wanted to read another of his novels to see if he had done better writing.
This novel (Law Of Similars) is about a Vermont lawyer who must choose between ethics and love.
It's not very satisfying as a love story. And as literary fiction, there's not enough complex ideas or sophisticated language to raise it to the level of a Saul Bellow, Ian McEwan, or even Richard Russo.
I'd call this strictly bland, popular fiction.
But, author Chris Bohjalian, has an interesting premise in story ideas. The characterization and setting is deep. I really got a sense of the homeopathic industry, and cold Vermont winters. Small towns are described well.
I just wish the writing and vocabulary would have been a bit higher brow ala Philip Roth----I do like a challenge!
Despite strong characterization and setting, with this dull writing, you are left with a sort of Danielle Steel-ish type prose. Nicholas Sparks at best.
The ending was dull, and left open-ended.
However, it wasn't a terrible novel, and I'd read him again; I just wouldn't call this my favorite, or best writing ever.
Don't waste your time.......2006-02-07
Even though I read Midmives by the same author and liked it,this book was nothing like his other book. The subject matter homeopathy is interesting but the plot is far fetched.I also didn't like the fact that the main character is a father of a two year old daughter who just lost his wife and all he thinks about is sex.So if I wanted to read smut like that there are other authors I could have picked.
4 star review.......2005-01-21
I enjoyed this book a great deal, even though I had some problems with the character of Leland, who seemed both admirable and reprehensible at the same time. He reminded me a bit of Lester in "House of Sand and Fog." Both are men who seem completely willing to give up everything to protect a woman they've known for an extremely short period of time. Why Leland, a prosecuting attorney would be willing to break the law, thus risking his career, reputation and most importantly, his daughter, to protect Carissa seemed a bit far-fetched to me. Had they known each other longer, maybe I could understand it. I did find the father/daughter relationship between Leland and Abby quite believable and the book did peak my interest in Homeopathy. Also, the story ended they only way I would have wanted it too. A four star recommendation for this one.

Book Description
Virtually every jurisdiction today is busy developing private international law rules to deal with trusts and similar ring-fenced structures. With the increasing impact of globalisation, business interests throughout the world are intent on maximising the potential of such structures for raising funds, lowering risks, and cutting costs. As a result, numerous complex issues involving the traditional categories of settlor, beneficiary, and fiduciary are being radically transformed. Extending the Boundaries of Trusts and Similar Ring-Fenced Funds offers valuable analyses, by sixteen well-known authorities in the field, of a broad range of trust-related issues. The many important insights in this book reveal the workings of such issues as the following: + the disappearing divergence between common law and civil law jurisdictions in the matter of trusts; + using the segregated fund concept to manage the risk of insolvency; + the demise of the "amateur trustee" in the charitable trust sector; + why loss to the fund supersedes particular losses of beneficiaries; + the legal dimensions of hiding ownership by "giving" property to trustees; + the intervention of public policy in questions of perpetuity; + the selective imposition of OECD and FTF transparency initiatives on offshore jurisdictions; and + "policing" of trustee behaviour by beneficiaries. Lawyers, bankers, and others dealing with investment and business finance will find much information as well as food for thought in this fascinating book, as will those involved in the traditional trust industry, whether as trustees or lawyers or fund managers. Most of the essays in this outstanding thematic collection were originally prepared for presentation at a conference held in 2001 at King's College London.

SIMILAR IS THE OPERATIVE WORD..........2006-12-03
This is a very well written book, though a little disconcerting in its thematic similarity to the author's previous novel, "Midwives", which is the superior of the two. Yet again, the medical and legal professions are in some conflict, and it makes for some interesting, though questionable, moral choices.
Here, a widowed prosecuting attorney, Leland Fowler, the single parent of a young child, is living in a rural town in Vermont. Not having felt well for months, he visits the town's resident homeopath and finds himself feeling better, both physically and emotionally, because the homeopath, Clarissa Lake, is just what the doctor ordered.
Shortly after Clarissa and Leland connect, a patient of hers goes into anaphylactic shock, digresses into a coma and dies, ostensibly after eating cashews to which he was allergic, after a casual conversation with Clarissa and a belief in the homeopathic law of similars that like cures like. Leland, emotionally involved with Clarissa, becomes embroiled in a covert attempt to shield her from the legal repercussions that he knows could follow such a tragedy, even though it might not have been entirely of her making. It is here that the book unravels a bit.
This ethical digression on the part of Leland is somewhat difficult to believe, as he had had a very brief relationship with Clarissa. It is almost inconceivable that he would chance losing his entire professional future and the security that his profession provides his small daughter to engage in a major ethical breach. A breach so serious, that were it to come to light, would almost certainly result in his probable disbarment from the practice of law. Needless to say, this decision by him ultimately affects their relationship in a way not foreseen by Leland.
Nonetheless, the book is somewhat absorbing and well worth reading.

"Kristin Hannah is a superb storyteller."
--Kathe Robin
Romantic Times
Award-winning author Kristin Hannah creates her most spellbinding and compelling novel yet...a passionate tale of obsession, redemption, and the magic of true love.
WAITING FOR THE MOON
She doesn't remember who she is or how she came to the mansion on the isolated Maine coast. Lost in a strange world filled with even stranger faces, Selena finds comfort in a man whose eyes reflect her own aloneness.
He is Ian Carrick, a brilliant physician turned recluse, hiding from life in the anonymity of this small sanctuary, haunted by a telepathic gift that has destroyed his desire to heal.
Selena comes to him, the only person he's ever met who is immune to his psychic powers. A mesmerizing innocent, she turns his life upside down, bringing light into the darkness and laughter into the silence. For her, he begins to believe in life again, to believe in himself. And then a mysterious figure from the past arrives, threatening to destroy their glorious love and the fantasy world they have created together....
Customer Reviews:
A lovely romance.......2006-08-12
I have heard so much about Kristin Hannah and I think I have read a book of hers before. This one is very sweet and wonderfully romantic. However, the reason for the three stars ~~ the first three-fourths of the book was drawn out and the last quarter of the book felt like it was rushed and incomplete. This book left more questions unanswered than answered. It's a very sweet romance and I enjoyed it.
This one begins with a mysterious woman jumping off the cliffs in front of a boatman's eyes. He rescues her and brings her to the local asylum for the insane. Dr. Ian Carrick, a famous has-been doctor, tries to rescue her for his selfish purposes. And there's all the other characters in the book that makes up a wonderful medley of family members for Selena who wakes up unable to remember who she was. She struggles to learn how to talk, dress and live life again ~~ she brings wonder and joy to that dark house and to the brooding doctor's heart.
If you're looking for a lovely romance ~~ this book fits the bill. It is enjoyable and wonderful ~~ perfect for those lazy summer days.

Slow to develop.......2005-10-12
This book reminded me of Judith McNaught's "Until You", with the anmesia theme, just not as good. I just didn't feel for the characters. The baby talk with Serena got on my nerves. I guess you just need to be in the mood for this kind of story.
Excellent book! .......2005-03-29
This writer does an excellent job of taking us into the main character's mind. It really developed the emotional sides of the characters and made me love them, bad traits and all! I would definately recommend this book! I look forward to trying some of the other books of Ms. Hannah.
What a beautiful, unusual romance.......2004-09-01
This book took me on a ride. I thought I had bought a generic romance book (I fell for the cover, which is really pretty), read the blurb on the back, thought: sounds nice. Now I have read it, I know I have really found a keeper.
Very well fleshed out characters, both the hero and heroine are adorable. They have both had hard times (talking about an understatement there), and find love in a very unusual circumstance. Yes, I love this book, and this gem has its place on my shelves for sure.
Wonderful read.......2004-08-26
This was the fifth novel I've read by this author, and as with the others, this one did not disappoint. The characters are carefully drawn and wonderfully complex, the plot moves along with unexpected twists that leave the reader wanting to reach out and give advice to the two damaged lovers as they try to reach beyond their own flaws.
This book grabbed my emotions from beginning to end. It was definitely hard to put down.

Is a werewolf stalking Louisiana? Not your average romance...........2005-10-04
Under a raging moon.....Nobody had to tell Sylvie Peabody some things were beyond understanding. After all, she was really a witch - a witch of uncommon power. But even she was powerless to explain the nightmare that gripped the town of Stagwater whenever the full moon approached. Was it really possible that a werewolf was stalking the Louisiana night? And was it coincidence the horror had begun when the mysterious Rand Garner bought that old estate on the edge of town? Sylvie knew she must not fall prey to his lethal charm and animal grace. Yet some force beyond her control meant that nothing could keep her from him -- not even her rising terror.....
This book is part of a four part series about The Circle - four friends with magical gifts, each finding love to last an eternity.
Is this a reprint of the Silhouette Shadow series?.......2002-11-07
Miss Vaughn is a terrific writer. My question here is if these books in the Dreamscape series are not the same books that were released earlier under the Shadow imprint.
Re-read a thousand times.......2001-12-04
I found this book years ago in a Kroger book section. And since that time, I've re-read it a thousand times. There is nothing more wonderful than the play between Rand and Sylvie. Rand is the hero I believe most women would love to find, whether physically, or someone as fun to be around. The Wiccan elements are wonderful. Having been in the Craft for over 20 years, I can give the author a great thumbs up for telling the truth about witches.
As for the Deloup House, I wish often there was such an attraction in Lousiana - and that when I visited it, Rand would be there.
A must for all of you wanting humor, horror, a strong female lead, and a beautiful hero - read Waiting for the Wolf Moon!!
I stumbled on this book at a used bookstore!.......2001-11-16
This was an incredible book - I read it in 1 day - I could not put it down!
The best work about witches I have ever read!.......2000-05-17
Yvonne Jocks (aka Evelyn Vaughn) blends real magick with a great fantasy in the Circle series. I was also sad to see the Shadows series end, it had such potential for authors like her, and great stories like this. Anyone who wants to get an idea what real witches are like should try to track down all 4 books in the Circle series. Any reader who is simply a great fan of romance, horror, or fantasy cannot do without this series either. This was my intro to the world of Yvonne Jocks writing, and I've been hooked ever since. As always, a great job done.

Searching Within.......2007-07-11
The title and book cover make LIQUID MIRROR: Waiting on the New Moon by Michael Skinner a wonderful eye-catcher. Between the covers is a nice collection of poetry that flows with ease and substance.
I was extremely impressed with his poetic style and the illustrations that are noted with certain selections. It reminds me of the kaleidoscope of colors that has always presented a warm and peaceful feeling. With some books you can lose yourself in the design and let your mind wander. Skinner has developed a poetry book that allows you to do just that.
Some of my favorite poems include "Under a Pop Corn Sky" which characterizes the sky, clouds, air and the rain in a unique fashion; then there is "And She Turned and Her Eyes Were Filled with Sky", there is no just description of this piece, you have to read it to appreciate his thoughts. And finally, there is "Loves Her Man Like No Other", which reflects how we should adore our mate; it bought a sensuous smile to my face.
Overall, LIQUID MIRROR: Waiting on the New Moon is a book that definitely steps outside the poetic box. I view poems as being expressions of what the author actually feels and if I can see from their perspective with no rhythm or reason, just from their flow of words that speaks volumes to me. Again, Skinner did just that and I applaud him on originality and content.

Michael Skinner is a website developer and computer programmer who has turned his hand to the writing of poetry. Highly recommended for those who enjoy heartfelt poetry lyrically expressed, "Liquid Mirror: Waiting On The New Moon" is his debut collection of verse which is divided into four sections: Wanderlust (poems which speak to the restless travels of a wandering minstrel), Dawn Warriors (poetry in celebration of day break), Screaming Over the Liquid Mirror (verse referring to the cries of sea birds as they ply the intercoastal waterways of Eastern Florida), and Waiting on the New Year (a group of love poems).
