For all that it involves organized crime, naked women, grumpy bouncers, a serious snowstorm, and a hero with a profound drinking pattern, The Ice Harvest is a quiet little book--noir-ish, certainly, but never to excess. As the novel traces Charlie Arglist's trail around his small Kansas hometown on Christmas Eve, 1979, the lawyer's literal footprints are clear enough, given the whopper of a blizzard that's descended, but his metaphorical path is far less obvious. He's killing time before leaving town, but where is he going? And why?

Scott Phillips' sketch of a crooked lawyer on the lam is amusingly ironic: though there's violence aplenty in the novel--including a morbidly comic finger-breaking scene starring Spencer, a philosophical bouncer at the Sweet Cage, one of the strip clubs Charlie oversees for Bill Gerard--this is Waiting for Godot rather than Goodfellas. Phillips masterfully sets up the reader's expectations for action and adventure, dropping cryptic hints about Charlie's past, present, and future, then gleefully keeps Charlie in a holding pattern, circling from one strip club to another, from bars to massage parlors to his former in-laws' house.

But when the world isn't scripted by Beckett, all waiting games must come to an end. Charlie's gamble--it would be cheating to tell you more than that it involves a little cocaine, a beautiful woman of indeterminate origin, a Christmas package full of cash, and an embarrassing photograph--pays off, and he heads out of town. How far does he get? Well, that's another story--and another opportunity for Phillips to show off the mordant humor that may brand him as the Cohen brothers' literary heir apparent. In his hands, Kansas doesn't seem far at all from Fargo. --Kelly Flynn

–The New York Times Book Review

“A FUTURE HARD-BOILED CLASSIC–TIGHT, COLD, AND CACKLING WITH IRONY. On Christmas Eve [in Wichita], a mob lawyer is skipping town with the cash. But in this boozy, neo-noir world–James M. Cain meets George V. Higgins–the best-laid plans of bagmen turn brutal.”
–The Dallas Morning News

“OMINOUS, ACTION-PACKED. . . This is a confident, wry debut . . . [that] may remind readers of Fargo or Pulp Fiction.”

“I SIMPLY CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT SCOTT PHILLIPS WILL DO NEXT. [This] funny, tough first novel felt like it was written by an old pro, an Elmore Leonard we’ve never heard about who’s discovered a place where the criminals are really dumb, the low-lifes are oh-so-fun to watch and, if somebody just happens to get what he deserves, there’s no one to blame.”

5 out of 5 stars This book is a blast of fresh air........2006-04-15

The Ice Harvest might not be for everyone. I say that because it is as unsentimental and violent as can be. Not that many people die here in comparison to even your average James Bond flick, its just you get to know everyone here a little bit and some of the acts are brutal in their cold boldness.

For myself, this was part of the appeal. I kept thinking that Scott Phillips had a remarkably similar narrative voice to that of Richard Russo. Russo is one of the great masters of character development you will come across, so by equating the two, even with a tenuous thread, is a high complement in my book. What you will get is a story chalk full of individuals that immediately come to life and take on personalities that separate them from one another in an adept manner.

If every mystery/thriller was as good as `The Ice Harvest,' you wouldn't need reviews like this because you would know that you were in store for a first rate read. I would say that if you wanted a hard boiled knock down read, this is your book.

2 out of 5 stars Greatly Written yet a horrible plot.......2006-03-01

This book was written with a great writing style that had the attribute of being very descriptve, yet the plot was gruesome, horrible, and completely disgusting to think about. I wouldnt buy it if I had the choice again.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Noir Deal.......2006-02-03

Charlie Arglist is a crooked attorney who, with his associate Vic, has ripped off a large sum of money from his employer, the mob boss of Wichita. It's Christmas Eve, 1979, and Charlie is making the rounds of strip bars, killing time until he can make his escape in the morning. As the long night wears on Charlie gradually realizes that his scheme has gone horribly, horribly wrong. The bodies begin to pile up and Charlie becomes more and more desperate until it all leads to a mordantly ironic conclusion. "The Ice Harvest" is a short, sharp shocker. It's set in the worst year of the worst decade in recent American history, and is wonderfully satirical in its tour of the sleazy stripper-and-porn underbelly of midwestern America.

Like many others I first became aware of this novel because of the John Cusack-Billy Bob Thornton movie version. Screenwriters Robert Benton and Richard Russo came up with some memorably witty dialogue and fleshed out some of the characters like Thornton's Vic, Oliver Platt as Charlie's drunken buddy, and Randy Quaid's scary gangster. But uncertain and meandering direction caused the tension to slacken. Worse, rather than the book's swift decent into hell, the filmmakers imply that Charlie's ordeal has finally made a man out of him, which is a serious misreading of the novel. And they tacked on a ridiculous "happy" ending instead of Phillips' bitter surprise coda.

So stick with the novel. The blurbs on the hardcover edition compare it to James Crumley, Jim Thompson, and James M. Cain. High praise indeed, but "The Ice Harvest" certainly earns it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-19

I couldn't tear myself away from this book. It was hilarious, realistic, and concise. In other words, they don't make 'em like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Darkly funny........2005-12-02

Nothing says Christmas like strippers, cocaine and free flowing alcohol. Well, it does if your name is Charlie Arglist and you're a crooked lawyer about to blow town for good.

The dark, shocking, frequently violent, but solidly funny narrative of The Ice Harvest begins at 4:15 pm December 24th and
ends at mid-morning the following day. All of the action, and there's quite a bit of action, takes place in or near Wichita. Kansas. Charlie has embezzled a staggeringly large sum of money from his gangster boss and is just hours away from disappearing to parts unknown with the cash.

While a major league snowstorm rages, Charlie spends his last night in town driving around visiting and sometimes revisiting a number of his old haunts. These include a few assorted bars, his ex in-laws home, an old girlfriend's duplex, a couple of strip clubs, a massage parlor and a porn shop. In keeping with the spirit of the season, he manages to stay more or less drunk the entire time, even snorting some coke for good measure.

As Charlie makes his rounds, bad things start happening. His ex sister-in-law's husband vomits in the car, the abusive boyfriend of one of the strippers gets his fingers broken one by one, and oh yes, several people are murdered.

The Ice Harvest is a no holds barred study of a man largely bereft of redeeming qualities and the rather sordid world he inhabits. Written with originality and a healthy dose of riotously funny dark humor, this book merits a 5 star rating.

I was inspired to read The Ice Harvest after seeing the newly released film of the same name. The movie is faithful to the decidedly noirish tone of the book, but the two differ in a number of places including the ending. In my opinion, if you like the movie, you will love the book.

    4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-06-20

I usually don't read romance novels because I have always imagined that they would be very generic with out much of a plot and a whole lot of cheesey sex. I have no idea what posessed me to buy this book. Lucky pick at Barnes and Nobles I guess because I was very pleasantly surprised. It was actually very touching with a good, creative plot and just enough steamy sex. It made me want to give some other romance novels a try too.

5 out of 5 stars The Kept Woman Rocked!.......2007-05-13

This was my first book by Susan Donovan and it won't be my last. The storyline sounded interesting so i bought the book. A single mother of 3 who's down on her luck jockingly says she'd consider being a "kept woman" to a rich guy so of course it happens. She meets a politician who needs an image makeover and falls madly in love. I couldn't put the book down it was that good. When i run out of books I'm definitely reading this book again!!!

    5 out of 5 stars sizzle.......2007-03-07

sexual tension in this book keeps you reading. i really liked both of the characters. the ending seems just thrown in - i didn't like it. the romance is great and the 'best friend' is real and sassy.

    3 out of 5 stars Easy read.......2007-02-07

For a person who wants an enjoyable, easy read, where the outcome is known and the time spent is quick. The book's characters are amusing and light, with some of the situations iffy, but as this kind of fiction goes, normal and fun. I would recommend it to those who like this genre or to someone looking for a light read on a cold winter day or a hot beach day.

    3 out of 5 stars Quite bland.......2007-01-24

I've really loved all of her previous books (especially my favorite, "He Loves Lucy") and was anxiously awaiting the newest, but . . . I think she dropped the ball on this one. I kept waiting for the Susan Donovan trademark spark between the two characters, but I realized halfway through that it was never going to come. The premise alone was beyond ridiculous and it would almost take a miracle to pull it off. Unfortunately, she doesn't.

The serial playboy falls head over heels with a suburban mom? The way it was written, it made it sound like when he was banished from other women, he simply had sex with the only woman available to him.

The level headed mother of three who has single-handedly raised her kids all of a sudden does something so stupid to ruin the entire plan? After such meticulous planning, it was totally out of character.

Donovan ties it up sweetly at the end, but by that time, it was too late for me. A surprising stumble for Donovan.

    Book Description

The works of award-winning poet and novelist Julia Alvarez are rich with the language and influences of two cultures: the Dominican Republic of her childhood and the America of her youth and adulthood. They have shaped her writing just as they have shaped her life.

Since her first celebrated novel, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, she has been articulating the passions and opinions of sisters and aunts, mothers and daughters, heroines and martyrs. In The Woman I Kept to Myself, seventy-five poems that weave together the narrative of a woman's inner life, it is Julia Alvarez's own clear voice that sings out in every line. These are not poems of a woman discovering herself--Alvarez might say that's what her twenties were for--but of a woman returning to herself. Now, in the middle of her life, she looks back as a way of understanding and celebrating the woman she has become. And she hides nothing: from her early marriages to her late-in-life love, from the politics that informed her to the prejudice that haunts her still. Her fears, her accomplishments, and the ready humor that permeates even her darkest thoughts are all proffered to the reader.

Perhaps the truest words to describe this remarkable collection are the two that give the last section its title: keeping watch. We are pulled into the intimate circle of a woman who keeps us company by sharing the stories and insights that we often keep to ourselves.

I love Julia Alvarez's other books, especially "In the Time of the Butterflies." This is her newest book, a book of poetry. You can see how these poems reflects the author and they really touched home with me. I read and reread the poems and found pieces of myself in almost each one. I have marked the ones that mean the most to me and return to read them often.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, some well written poetry........2005-12-02

After being frustrated by a number of poorly written books of poetry, this book fell into my lap. Not only did I enjoy this book, but I am sure to read everything else published by Julia Alvarez. A highly recommended read for anyone. Her poems are deep and thoughtful and cover a variety of topics.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent investment of time...........2004-04-19

I have never been a huge fan of poetry; however, when I found out I was going to have the opportunity to meet Julia Alvarez at a reception I was planning, I read this book. It is thoroughly engaging and every time I picked it up I had a hard time putting it back down. If the eyes are the windows to someone's soul, these poems are Ms. Alvarez's virtual eyes for us to gaze into. In closing, if you have an opportunity to attend a reading with Ms. Alvarez, I highly recommend it.

Not only incredibly informative, but relatable & fun! Even though I'm currently in a happy, healthy relationship, I think if I had followed the simple guidelines this book suggests when I was single, it would have saved me a lot of heartache. There were several examples that hit home for me, courtesy of my dating past. I often found myself nodding and smiling along as I actually had 'Been there, done that.' Other instances just had me laughing out loud. I have recommended this to all of my single friends; it is an insightful read without taking itself too seriously, by an obviously knowledgeable, personable author.

A rarity to find all 3 in a self-help book! But this author seems to have a nack for truth (backed up with research), common sense and an affable way of transmitting to a reader. Well worth the time. And this is what I call a perfect gift for many single friends !

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-10-16

This book doesn't just give good advice, it does so with flair. I like that everything is tied to research, so it's not just a book with anecdotal evidence. The writer is really funny without trying, so read everything or you'll miss out on some great lines.

      The story was good.
The Characters human - the emotions believable.
The story could have had a bit more depth. The characters a bit more restraint.
It is what I call a marshmellow story with not much zing.
I expected more of Zack at 40 years old but maybe his biological clock was ticking.
I just wanted the story to be more rounded out than just her fears - where was the danger? she should have been looking over her shoulder more and hey, she couldn't expect the life style that the mob boss had given her.

Zack was destroying his career by giving into his lust for "Natalie" - not that it didn't work out all right.
Ah well, almost as good as the previous book.

Once the glamorous mistress to a high-powered mob boss, Natalie Pascal was now a kept woman of a very different sort.
Her new keeper: U.S. Marshal Zack Ryder, the handsome man assigned to give her a new identity and a chance to cleanse her torrid past. Soon, only her guardian's presence could comfort her, only his touch could chase away her nightmares.

Zack always played by the rules and that meant never getting involved with a witness. If Natalie's cover was compromised, she'd be given a new life - one he'd know nothing about. But trying to deny his desire for the vulnerable beauty was compromising his very ability to see danger approaching.

By succumbing to Natalie's siren song, Zack could destroy his career and maybe his own safety. Now, who was keeping whom?

I love Sheri's writing style. She creates the most appealing heros with a slightly tough, bad boy edge.

And what a combination she's devised in A Kept Woman. The ex-mistress of a mob boss falls in love with the deputy marshall who's assigned to help her relocate. That alone was enough to get me hooked. But besides the romance, what I really liked about this book was that the characters suffered through true to life mistakes and tragedies. Sheri presented and resolved them in believable ways.

Oh yeah, almost forgot! The (...)tension was scorching too!!

      5 out of 5 stars A Keeper.......2004-05-05

A Kept Woman by Sheri Whitefeather is a tender moving love story.

Natalie Pascal was once the mistress of a mob boss. She is starting over with a new life after witnessing a murder. Helping her adjust is US Marshall Zack Ryder.
Zack Ryder was just planning on getting another witness set up in her new life. He wasn't prepared for the woman that he was assigned to help. Natalie wasn't the vamp he thought she would be. She was a beautiful, vulnerable woman.

As Zack and Natalie spend more time together they grow closer and both realize that what they have is rare. Zack and Natalie connect on so many levels.

A Kept Woman is an emotional sexy read. Sheri Whitefeather books are a joy to read.

      3 out of 5 stars light read.......2006-07-04

To start off, speaking as a woman, extreme feminists should try to give speeches where they are due, not whenever they have a chance. Frankly, this is getting really tiring, and reading one of the reviews about this book you would've thought it called for the return of the "harem" women or something. Back to the book, though it is not a master piece by any sense, I found it to be a lot bettr than most of the other books in this genre, which tend to have challow, undefined characters. This book's main characters were outlined very nicely. However the book does have a lot of "hollywood stuff" in it, so you might not want to take it all that seriously. All in all, it is a great light read, ideal for a short vacation or for flicking through at the beach.

      1 out of 5 stars Despicable!.......2002-12-11

I can't believe a woman wrote this *** of a book. I would give it a half star if I could. First, the plot is nothing more than the reash "uptown girl meets blue-collar man" cliché. As for the hero, Micheal is nothing more than a chauvinist pig, who spends most of his free-time hopping in bars, drinking to oblivion, and going home with faceless women he can't even remember their names the morning after.

What's is more, Micheal is supposedly God's gift to women, and apparently no women who has been in his arms walk out without having experienced the big O. And true to form, since poor spoiled, rich, Diana who never had experienced the big O in her marriage with the ego-maniac Ernie, these two are a match made in heaven. In fact, Diana and Micheal seems to have nothing in common save the fact that "he can awaken" desire within the ice princess Diana.

The worst about this book is that you could figure out the plot within 1/4 through. It's utterly brainless and worst, it is insulting to women. For example, you have Diana saying of Micheal that in the bedroom, "Micheal's word is law" (she is totally at his mercy since the sex he is giving her turns her brain into mush). Talk about a self fufilling prophecy. Micheal the sex God. It get's better: Micheal, having sex with Diana, is thinking that for the first time in his life he is learning to "MASTER" a woman. With his humble beginning, blue-collar-make-good Micheal gets to melt the ice princess. Get real! No, it gets worst. You have Diana begging and pleading Micheal... "*** me Micheal". At this point I got sick in my stomach.

In short, I think the premise of this book is deeply flawed. The characters (save Diana, who does try to change), have nothing to aspire us. What is worst, I have never seen a hero I detest more than Micheal. He does nothing productive with his time other than drinking, having sex, and of course making money (if you think these are productive activities). He is a chauvinist with a capital C.

Moreover, I think the author has a poor opinion of women, since she portrays most of the secondary character women has either *** hungry or gold diggers. Through Micheal's eyes Bagshawe tells us that most women are lemon heads and spend their time trying to get into a man's pants or get a man to look after them. Bagshawe totally infantilizes these women.

Finally, half way through the book, it becomes clear that Bagshawe's project is to try to pass lust for love (not unsual in today's romance fiction). Other than the "great sex" part, Diana and Micheal have no chemistry and are not compatible. In the end, Diana turns out to be Micheal's trophy wife. Her good breeding seems to be her most important asset, something that man like Micheal (or nouveau riche) are most willing to bank on.

In all, I am going to return this book right this minute.

      2 out of 5 stars Not Louise Bagshawe's Best.......2001-12-14

I was rather disappointed in the love story featured in this book. HAving read and loved an earlier novel, Venus Envy and just adoring the love story in that novel, I was rather disappointed by the one in this book. I enjoyed the rest of the plot but found the love story rather wanting. It seemed to be to be rather crude and I could not see why these characters liked each other apart from the sex, that was all the relationship was about, no romance in it as far as I could see. I did not feel the characters were developed well enough, the growth of them as people was lacking and also disappointing. I would be happier to go and back and read Venus Envy once again.

      4 out of 5 stars A Kept Woman.......2001-10-11

I've always enjoyed Louise Bagshawe books and this one did not disapoint. Although I don't think it was her best effort, I couldn't put the book down. The book center's on Diana, who starts out as a ditzy society wife who learns how to use her brains in the workforce after divorcing her rich husband. Although I did think the pacing was a bit slow at parts overall I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe Louise had a deadline to meet..........2001-07-20

This one was a rush job. I envision Louise hunched over her computer, furiously trying to bang out a couple of chapters to meet her editor's deadline.

While I warmed to the characters by the middle, the opening chapters didn't really grab me. As another reviewer has noted, the plot is pretty pat, and the action pretty lame (how many times do we read that the company is saved once again by Diana's fine headhunting - I wonder if the auther just cut-and-pasted the same paragraph over and over to save time?)

Bagshawe likes to use brand names to round out her characterization, and impart that little extra bit of eliteness to the world her characters inhabit. I like this, when she does it well. Here again, as with other areas of her work, she needs to research a little more carefully, or blunders become annoying(a white LEATHER Stella McCartney coat?) One could say petty, but to the extent to which Ms. Bagshawe uses name brands, she'd better know what she's talking about.
