In her first novel, award-winning Indian screenwriter Arundhati Roy conjures a whoosh of wordplay that rises from the pages like a brilliant jazz improvisation. The God of Small Things is nominally the story of young twins Rahel and Estha and the rest of their family, but the book feels like a million stories spinning out indefinitely; it is the product of a genius child-mind that takes everything in and transforms it in an alchemy of poetry. The God of Small Things is at once exotic and familiar to the Western reader, written in an English that's completely new and invigorated by the Asian Indian influences of culture and language.

Book Description

The story of the tragic decline of an Indian family whose members suffer the terrible consequences of forbidden love, The God of Small Things is set in the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India. Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, the twins Rahel and Esthappen fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family -- their lonely, lovely mother, Ammu (who loves by night the man her children love by day), their blind grandmother, Mammachi (who plays Handel on her violin), their beloved uncle Chacko (Rhodes scholar, pickle baron, radical Marxist, bottom-pincher), their enemy, Baby Kochamma (ex-nun and incumbent grandaunt), and the ghost of an imperial entomologist's moth (with unusually dense dorsal tufts).

When their English cousin and her mother arrive on a Christmas visit, the twins learn that Things Can Change in a Day. That lives can twist into new, ugly shapes, even cease forever. The brilliantly plotted story uncoils with an agonizing sense of foreboding and inevitability. Yet nothing prepares you for what lies at the heart of it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The God of Small Things.......2007-09-09

The God of Small Things is a work of sumptuous beauty, from the gorgeous dust jacket, to the lush prose, to its exotic metaphors, and not least to the story itself. It is a superbly written tale of childhood innocence lost in a world of jealousy and bigotry.

The setting is the author Roy's home state of Kerala, India. Most of the characters belong to the region's large and relatively prosperous Syrian Christian minority. Other characters are Roman Catholic and Hindu. Key events take place at a time when India's Communist Party was a major factor in national and local politics. And, on top of the complex matrix of religious and political beliefs, there are the social class divisions between Touchables and Untouchables.

The principal characters are Rahel and her fraternal twin brother Esta. They live with their mother Ammu, their grandmother, their great-aunt and their uncle Chacko. With great anticipation they are awaiting a visit from Chacko's ex-wife (now widowed from her second husband), and Sophie Mol, Chacko's daughter whom they have never met. Right from the start, however, we learn that Sophie Mol will die and Ammu be disgraced. How and why these tragedies happen, and their consequences, form the core of the novel.

Like a moth drawn to an open flame, the story line circles the time of Sophie Mol's death, darting years into the past at times, then into the future, but always returning ever closer to the events that will tear Rahel's family apart. Many of the chapters are told from Rahel's perspective as a child, and they are told with a child's wild and innocent imagination.

Despite its non-linear format, The God of Small Things is highly readable. Amid ever-growing suspense, Roy evokes the sights, sounds and smells of the Indian tropics. You can feel the heat and moisture amid the hum of life in this tense, sensuous and erotic story.

4 out of 5 stars Very powerful...........2007-09-04

I also had a hard time getting through this book. I would read a chapter and put it down for a couple of days. I was distracted by the style of writing (very poetic) and kinda grossed out by some of the characters. I didn't even like the twins who are the main characters. There were several times when I didn't want to pick it back up to finish it.

I am so glad I did. I finished the book several days ago and am still haunted by the ending. I feel sad about Rahel and Estha but it was Velutha and Ammu's relationship which was the most powerful for me. How tragic and so beautiful. Definitely worth your time...

5 out of 5 stars Katie.......2007-07-31

It's like reading beautifully dense poetry. It's a challenge at first that pays off in linguistics and intensity. It's incredible! Definitely recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Exhilarating, But Not For All.......2007-07-31

As many reviewers have lamented, this is not a linear story, and it is indeed an effort and a challenge to begin and stick with, but for those who relish the rich, complex literary styles of writers like Faulkner and Morrison (think "Beloved"), The God of Small Things is an exhilarating reading experience. You will either be bothered by or adore Roy's poetic, lyrical, and often abstract, writing style. I adored it. It reminded me of the work I love by poets ee cummings and Ezra Pound. It is about feelings less than it is about facts.

I decided early on in the novel that I would let it carry me in along and that I would not get too bogged down by trying to always know what, exactly, was going on. Roy throws many threads out for the first half and then gracefully pulls them all together, skillfully weaving them into each other, until the story's moving and heartrending ending. This is a story about broken people in a broken society, about love and truth, about this insane thing we all know as our family, of happiness, sadness and loss and of the awesome, mind-boggling enormity of Life's small moments, small events, small things.

When I finished the last page, I turned back to the first and began it again. I will look forward to more works by Ms. Roy.

4 out of 5 stars I wanted to put this book down, but finished, it was worth it........2007-07-24

I want to start out by saying that I never put a book down. I always finish them. This was one of those books that I thought about putting down, but decided to keep on going. It was defiantly worth finishing because I ended up enjoying it very much.

On reason why I wanted to put this book down was because I found it frustrating at first to read. I am a seasoned reader that reads quite a bit, but I thought that the author jumped around too much between stories, characters, and most importantly past and present. At first this may be confusing but after a lot of pages and you get the sense for the characters and time periods you get use to it. This was confusing at first because it would jump around from paragraph to paragraph, but after looking at the book as a whole the author did this to develop the story.

By time I got to the last 100 or so pages I could not put this story down. This is when everything starts to come together and what makes it all and all a great story. I admit it is frustrating reading the story about the secret with tons of foreshadowing that already happened. It almost makes you feel like you missed something while reading it, but once you get to those final pages everything starts to come together.

I am going to give this book, 4 stars. The reason for this is because I thought it was a great story that really came together the last 100 or so pages, but at times before that it was frustrating to read because of the authors writing style and jumping around so much early on.

All and all I would recommend this book to everyone because it poses many interesting issues and ultimately is a great story. If you feel like putting it down I would tell you to keep on reading because everything will eventually come together and make a great story.

The seller sent me one book with first 2 stories in it. It was supposed to be four books. I accept that change without being asked. But the seller never sent the second book. I have emailed several times without any response at all. I will never buy from this seller again.

5 out of 5 stars All Emotions Great and Small.......2000-02-22

Since I want to become a vet, I thought that this would be a great book to read. From the first sentence to the last I was enthralled. The words James Herriot uses in his books make you feel like you are standing right beside him when he is talking. This book will make you literally laugh out loud and also will make you cry. The story in this book is not one easily forgotten.

these books are the best i ever read. you can see the places described by herriot in your mind. i've read every book several times, and will read them all several more.

5 out of 5 stars A book I remember years later..........1999-12-07

I had a dear aunt give me a copy of "All Things Great and Small" as a kid. I began to read it out of boredom as it was summer and school was out. I remember how each chapter was it's own story--some sad and some quite humorous and in my mind James Herriot allowed me a accompany him on each vetinarian visit. Trully a wonderful book series. Now as a parent I can see how this book might make for a great bed-time story book for children.

5 out of 5 stars Great account of the life of an English country Vet!.......1999-11-17

I've read the whole series several times over, and it really brings to life images of English country farms. Cold frosty mornings, gruff country farmers, the rolling hills and dales of the countryside are all beautifully illustrated through Jame's Harriot's wonderful prose. It evokes thoughts of simpler times and whisks you away from the hustle and bustle of modern city life. A bonus if you love animals, but not necessary to enjoy these books!

BANNER OR CALL OUT BUBBLE (IF it’s not already on the front):

An Introduction to John Piper’s Desiring God

    Story Behind the Book

“The greatest news in all the world is that there is no final conflict between my passion for joy and God’s passion for His glory. The knot that ties these together is the truth that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. Jesus Christ died and rose again to forgive the treason of our souls, which have turned from savoring God to savoring self. In the cross of Christ, God rescues us from the house of mirrors and leads us out to the mountains and canyons of His majesty. Nothing satisfies us—or magnifies Him—more.”

4 out of 5 stars The God of Small Details.......2007-01-22

This story is artistically crafted and exceptionally poetic with lots and lots of similes and repetition. The author clearly has her own unique style. The story moves backwards and forwards - it is often difficult to keep these shifting time periods in perspective - and in the telling we learn many historical facts: we note the complications of beurocracy, the legacy of colonization, the influence of American TV, sexual molestation, the unjust treatment of untouchables, etc... The greatness of this book lies in the way the writer has crafted her story. She is without doubt the God of Small Details.
Although I found this story rambling at times, I highly commend the tremendous artistry of this author in this tale of love and loss.

    5 out of 5 stars More Than a Guide: A Scholarly Work.......2006-06-01

The novel resonated with me on so many levels that I simply needed to dig deeper, so I bought my first reader's guide ever. What I found was a scholarly work as fascinating as the novel itself. It not only illuminated the structure and symbolism of Roy's book, it provided a rich background of the story's setting in India, comparisons to other Indian authors' works, and the political climate that led Roy to concentrate on social activism after her first and only novel.

I was thrilled by the intellectual stimulation of reading Dr. Mullaney's guide and wanted more. In addition to the many references and recommended reading that she includes in this guide, you can find more of her own writing through the Manchester Metropolitan University's English Research Institute. This one guide has opened new vistas for an old engineer used to reading non-fiction, sci fi, survival stories, poitical thrillers, and the like. I've always appreciated excellent writing whatever the genre, but now am once again a student. Such thorough research, clear thinking, and precise exposition is refreshing and infectious.

2 out of 5 stars Stop setting the scene and get to the point........2005-08-29

Reading this book was a chore for me. I somehow managed to finish and the last few chapters were the best. The author spends WAY too much time describing the scenery and building the characters. At some times, I just wanted to read the story and get on with it and not read pages and pages about pickles and other random thoughts. In the end, there was not a whole lot of plot to the book. The majority of the book was describing the environment which turned out to be meaningless and didn't contribute to the book as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful work by A. Roy.......2005-06-22

I chose to read this book from a list of books in my women's study class 2 years ago in college. I found the story somewhat difficult to follow at first, so I ordered it on tape. I listened to the reader execute the story and once I was familiar with the characters, I read the rest myself. It was a truly moving story, that I feel, captured the feelings of people in that culture and time. I encourage people to read the book, and be patient while the story and characters unfold.

4 out of 5 stars Very high quality reader's guide.......2002-08-02

This is the third of these guides that I have read, and they have all been very good so far. (The other two were about The Poisonwood Bible and The Shipping News.)This one follows the same basic idea. There is a chapter about the author, which is very interesting about Roy's upbringing and political background. And then there is a bigger chapter which looks at the book itself. It's intelligent without being difficult to read, and it's clear without being patronising or dumbed-down. This is a long way away from the Cliffs Notes I used to use back in school! But my favourite chapters in each of these books that I've read so far are the ones about the reviews that the novels got when they were published. It is just fascinating to see how the literary establishment reacted to this novel when it first appeared, and how some people picked up on the resonance of it immediately, and others seemed to miss the point. Anyway, I enjoyed this book very much, and I learned quite a lot about Indian literature in the process.

                  Book Description

The fall of Samaria is narrated in 2 Kings 17. The cuneiform inscriptions dealing with this event are prima facie contradictory: the conquest is ascribed to both Shalmaneser V and Sargon II. The surmise of H. Tadmor that Samaria was conquered twice is investigated. At the same time the events are interpreted in their socio-historical framework. Tadmor's assumption cannot be falsified, although his theory should be modified as regards the date of the first conquest: 723 B.C.E. The fall of Samaria can be interpreted as an inevitable result of the expansion of the Assyrian Empire in combination with internal struggles in Israel. Evidence of deportation reveals that deportees were treated as normal citizens. Thorough discussion of the sources and their interpretation is a feature of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not my favorite Lora Leigh book.......2006-08-23

I really love Lora Leigh's books. I loved all the Breeds book, the magick books, and most of the others. So I'm really sorry to have to say that this book was not good. Really not good. I couldn't even finish it, it was that bad. But here are my thoughts on the first half, which I struggled through.

Basically, it's set in the future, when a man's brain can be downloaded into an android's body. But said download can be incomplete, leaving said man confused enough to show up on the doorstep of a woman he barely knows, acting like an alpha male in love. This isn't a bad idea. But nothing that happens makes any sense, and the way that the characters act doesn't make any sense.

For example, this hot guy breaks into the heroine's house and naturally, she thinks he's going to rob her or something. So far it makes sense. Then five minutes later she's offering him food and a place to sleep for the night. And she's just shrugging off (literally) the fact that he broke into her house. Then five minutes after that, they are bickering like an old married couple, and he's sort of moved in with her. He's telling her she's all his and getting all jealous, and still she doesn't find this strange. These people have no history together, and the heroine just shrugs all this weirdness off (including the fact the hot guy has amnesia) with all the concern of a woman signing for a UPS package. It just didn't make sense.

Also, it's incredibly self-indulgent. The heroine is a writer of romantic erotica, and she has a shelf of "great literature" that includes Julie Garwood and Nora Roberts.

Mac, the hero, is some kind of super powerful super rich famous guy, who for some reason knows that a writer of erotic romance is alive. I am glad erotic romance writers exist, but portraying this writer as some kind of threat to the social order and worthy of political concern is ludicrous. And like I said, self-indulgent.

And there's the annoying little fact that Mac is Scottish. I know it's picky, but there wasn't a point to him being Scottish, except that it gave the authors a chance to write dialog in a sexy Scottish brogue, and that was just a little too obvious.

Because the characters were so unbelievable and the dialog and interactions between them didn't progress in a way that made any sense, the love scenes were boring. The whole thing was just unconvincing. After a while I couldn't take it anymore and just put it down.

                  5 out of 5 stars Bob's Fall IS A MUST READ........2006-05-03

This is in response to the review, "I read it last week and don't recall it now."

I RATE THE BOOK FIVE STARS! A MUST READ!
Bob's Fall is a terrific example on how a book should be written. Lora Leigh and Veronica Chadwick weave a tale of suspense, action and lots of hot sex.

From page 1, the book draws you in, leaving the reader engrossed in the plot. The action steams up the pages, and has the reader wishing this would turn into a movie. These two fabulous sisters have done it again, weaving hot fiery sex between the two main characters.

I have read all of Veronica's and Lora's work, and can't wait what these two EXTRAORDINARY WRITERS come up with next.

                  5 out of 5 stars I fell in love with B.O.B.'s Fall!.......2006-01-23

With the world at peace in the year 2375, technology is taking a new direction. Instead of machines of war, scientists are free to develop B.O.B's...Battery Operated Boyfriend's. These cybernetic creations appear human and are fully programmed to provide intense sexual pleasure. Sex toys have come a LONG way!

Cyber-Tronics leader and creator of the B.O.B., "Mac" MacDougal, is the nemesis of erotic romance author, Elyiana Richards. Elyiana finds Mac incredibly irritating and infinitely arousing. In fact, she has based many of her heroes on Mac and he regularly stars in her sexual fantasies.

But Elyiana never dreams she'll ever have the opportunity to experience the pleasure of a B.O.B. or Mac. So when a man that closely resembles Mac climbs through her window, Elyiana believes him to be a MacDougal relative. An attractive, sensual and arousing relative...

Lora Leigh and Veronica Chadwick have created a richly textured, believable, futuristic world in B.O.B.'s Fall. With this wonderful backdrop, I easily immersed myself in Mac and Elyiana's world and their delicious love story. I am especially fond of heroines that are feisty and Elyiana is spirited! Mac has met his match. And as for Mac...he is truly drool-worthy! The accent alone is enough to make me pant but add his Alpha demeanor to the mix and I just gurgle with lust!

With mystery, romance and amazingly erotic sex, B.O.B.'s Fall will keep you turning those pages and make you hot for more! Ms. Leigh and Ms. Chadwick's collaboration is a rousing success. I can't wait for more from these two and am desperately wanting Amareth's story!

                    Book Description

Our knowledge of the political history of ancient Israel is almost exclusively dependent on the information that may be gleaned from biblical writings, which reflect a historiosophical perspective very different from that employed in modern historical writing. Nonetheless and despite all the problems encountered in dealing with the biblical texts, the history of the ancient Israelite states that can be derived from them has much to offer a student of politics. By subjecting the biblical writings to a political analysis, instead of the critical literary analysis common to contemporary biblical studies, Sicker constructs a plausible political history of the ancient Israelite states that takes into consideration the geopolitical realities that directly conditioned much of that history as well as the religious dimensions of Israelite political culture that played a critical role in it. He demonstrates that the ancient Israelite states were confronted by virtually every political dilemma, domestic and international, encountered by states and governments throughout the subsequent history of the world. The way they dealt with the issues, successfully or otherwise, is highly instructive and relevant to the complex issues faced by states and governments today.
