5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't it be loverly?.......2006-07-07

This is a delightful love story about a short stop and his second baseman, the only fault of which is...the ending is SO happy. Excuse me, but there will be a black man (and probably a white woman as well) in the White House before Major League Baseball accepts homosexuiality among its own. Lefcourt, writing in 1992, thought, well, maybe if I set the story in 1998 (which he does!)-maybe...it could happen then. Well, it's 2006, and it hasn't happened yet. Give it another 30 years. MLB..er, SUCKS!

5 out of 5 stars It's going to happen.......2006-03-25

I've read this book a couple of times and have recently repurchased another copy for my collection. I have always loved this book and hope that others will see the comedy affair that this book offers. Blonde hair, blue eyed with the blonde wife, the best job around and comes to find out he loves his 2nd baseman.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, wide-eyed love + consequences.......2005-09-07

I have read this book three times. It works so well because it realistically portrays the anguish of a "man with everything" having to risk it all to finally acknowledge his homosexuality to himself. All-American baseball star Randy Dreyfus does NOT appear callous or malicious in finally leaving his wife and acknowledging his love of teammate D.J. Pickett. Rather, the story expertly uses the metaphors of baseball, stardom and fan-response to explore the compelling nature of real love and the real-life consequences of bigotry. Add funny and you've got a book worth reading. No graphic sex scenes (however you feel about that.)

4 out of 5 stars A Glove Story.......2005-04-03

The last manuscript I sent to my publisher was a story about a lesbian pro golfer who while on the men's tour falls in love with her biggest rival. He laughed at me saying the public would never buy it. Something like that would never happen in a million years, he informed me. And yet stories like this one get published. It reads like the typical homosexual-fantasy tripe. A straight man falls for a gay man. Aren't there enough of these sci-fi stories on IFC(Independent Film Channel). After showering with the same sex for twenty years, the main character suddenly decides he likes whangs. This is the only explanation the author gives for the change in sexual preference. Sorry but human sexual behavior is not that simple. Was there some childhood trauma? The author simply ignores the psychological aspects of sexual preference. Regardless, the story was enjoyable with plenty of oddball characters coming in and out of the story. But the one I thought that underdeveloped was D.J. Why was he attractive to Dreyfus? Was it just his whang and taut buttocks or something else? How did D.J. keep his preference secret and how was it living with this secret. Why did he accept Randy's proposal without a second thought? These are questions I wish the author would have tackled. Anyway I was surprised by the accurateness of the baseball parts of the story. The author does know baseball but not human behavior.

5 out of 5 stars at least a triple..........2004-09-18

This is a fun, sweet, enjoyable book. I have re-read it several times and always enjoy it. And I will never feel the same in a fitting room again...

      Book Description

Privileged access to both the Queen and Prince Philip is the key to this revealing and engrossing royal biography.

This is the first major biography of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh—both royal, both great-great-great grandchildren of Queen Victoria, but in temperament and upbringing very different people. Her childhood was loving and secure, his turbulent: the Duke's grandfather was assassinated, his father arrested, his family exiled, his parents separated by the time he was ten. For almost sixty years theirs have been among the most famous faces in the world—yet the personalities behind the image remain elusive and the nature of their marriage is an enigma.

Gyles Brandreth has met all the principal players in the story; he quotes no anonymous sources; he has known the Duke of Edinburgh for twenty-five years and has interviewed him. This is a unique and revealing portrait of a remarkable partnership, told with candor and authority, and illustrated with Prince Philip's family photographs and pictures from the Queen's royal collection. 40 pages of illustrations.

      5 out of 5 stars A Look at a Royal Marriage.......2007-06-08

This is not just a book about the marriage of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip-it is a story of their lives both before and after their marriage in-in sections.

First Section: details about their early lives and details surrounding their parents and grandparents.

First was Elizabeth growining up in England-with her parents the Duke and Duchess of York and then after Edward VIII abdicated King George VI and Queen Elizabeth

Second was Philip born a Greek and Danish Prince but shortly after his birth his family was forced to move to France to live near his uncle George and Aunt Marie.

Second Section: Details their lives as teenagers around the time of WWII
Elizabeth was forced to live apart from her parents and was sent to live with her sister outside of London. After the war the family was reunited and at 13 Elizabeth met Philip for the first time

Philip lived in France for several years before his mother was institutionalized and his father ran off with his mistress. His sisters help raise him and then sent him to schools in Germany, and England. During the War he was a Navey Man where at 18 he met 13 year old Elizabeth.

The Next several Sections detail their courtship, marriage, becomeing first time parents to Charles and Anne, becoming Queen and Consort and then having Andrew and Edward afterward.

An interesting book with interviews from Prince Philip, Elizabeth's cousin and others that give a detailed account of two interesting people.

      4 out of 5 stars beautiful one.......2006-11-04

one of the most beautiful biographies i have ever read . it reavels the humaneterian side of queen elizabith and prince philip . they are like us they love and hate like every ordinary person . mr brandreth is great .do not miss this book

5 out of 5 stars Another Royal Book?.......2006-06-06

Having read a lot of books about the royals, I didn't know if I wanted to read another. I'm very glad I read this one. Enjoyed how it was written. Very witty remarks, a lot of them in parenthesis. Having the book notes at the bottom of the various pages was a great help. One can't help but read them. There was alot of info that I had read before, but Mr Brandreth gave a more balanced view. It was a fun read!

      4 out of 5 stars Interesting reading.......2006-05-13

This book is well written and enjoyable, but at times quite disengenous. While the author personally knows the prince and has met the queen, his writing ignores some obvious observations by equally believable authors. In fact, as to the princes' errant love life, he interviews Sarah Bradford as an author to be believed, because of her scholarly detail and investigation. When she asserts that Philip has had "lovers" emanting from the very upper crust set who know how to keep their mouths shut, he interviews the Duchess of Abercorn who says "she and the prince would walk and in hand on the beach, but were not physical lovers". She does say she cannot talk for the rest. Brandeth then leaps to the conclusion that the prince's dalliances are just intellectual. One could laugh, as he should have skipped it, as come to this silly conclusion. At any rate, some of the stuff is first rate and as he is a familair with the prince, whom I think he sees justly, as a man with a job to do and does it whatever the cost. It is worthwhile reading, if skewed to one side. That is okay, for as in politics, all of this stuff is skewed to one side or another.

5 out of 5 stars Prince Philip was born on a kitchen table on the island of Corfu.......2006-04-13

And other irrisistable tidbits make this book an honest and enchanting look at the British Royal family. For me, it has been a real page turner. I cannot put this book down. Yes, as one other reviewer pointed out, the book has many "footnotes" but they are packed with even more interesting information, and are not a problem to read. The stories Brandreth includes about the young Princess Elizabeth are charming as well. Scenes of her pulling her grandfather, King George V, by his beard, so that she could play "horse and groom" are priceless. "Lillibet", as he called her, was the apple of his eye, and he got down on all fours to play with her. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in British history and the current Royal Family.

      Book Description

This book is a study of the marrying of Anne of Cleves to King Henry VIII. It contains fascinating material--including "demonic" interference and sexual politics at court--that differs greatly from the usual stereotyped accounts of Anne. It also provides a rich new context of royal courtship rituals, and a startling account of the king's failure to consummate his marriage. Henry's decision to ally himself with this German noblewoman in 1540 was in part a reaction to the Franco-Imperial Treaty mediated by Pope Paul III, who renewed a suspended bull of excommunication against Henry in the hope of isolating England diplomatically. The subsequent marriage procedures, from the advent of negotiations and the portrait of Anne by Hans Holbein the Younger to Henry's Rochester greeting of Anne--in disguise--and the Greenwich nuptials, all followed usual royal protocol. However, the king's sexual incapacity, which prevented the consummation of the marriage, culminated in the fall and subsequent execution of Thomas Cromwell and his client Lord Hungerford, who were both tarred with the brush of sexual heresy. Retha M. Warnicke is Professor of History at Arizona State University. She is the author of several books, including The Rise and Fall of Anne Boleyn (Cambridge 1989).

      3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2000-07-06

When I first started this book I was hoping that it was one that would give some insight into the life of Anne of Cleves, what she was like as a person etc. I was also hoping that it would touch on the controversty surrounding the portrait done of her by Hans Holbein (it mentions the scandal briefly to say that he did not misrepresent her in the portrait). Instead it focuses on marriage and uses Anne as its example. Not to say that this topic was not interesting, I just felt as though the title was misleading in terms of the book's subject matter. It really does not talk about her until you are half way through the book. I would recomend reading this book but only after it has become a paperback or if you want to know about the history of marriage within the Church.

4 out of 5 stars Warnicke's "The Marrying of Anne of Cleves" an Engaging Read.......2000-07-03

Dr. Warnicke's latest book is quite enlightening. I admit that I didn't know much about Anne of Cleves or how she came to be married to Henry VIII, but learned that what I had read was largely inaccurate. Dr. Warnicke makes Anne's situation quite clear, much as she did in her book about Anne Boleyn.

The information about royal protocol in selecting and securing foreign-born brides was also fascinating. The book definitely bears a second reading, IMO.

4 out of 5 stars The Marrying of Anne of Cleves: Royal Protocol in Early Mode.......2000-05-05

Excellent! Lots of detail and background. Ms. Warnicke provides details from many courts and now I finally understand just how Anne of Cleves ended up in England. I enjoyed this as much as her previous book on Anne Boleyn.

1 out of 5 stars Vicious Gossip Sanctioned by the Royals.......1998-09-25

If you like sitting down to dishy, vicious gossip, this book's for you. Lady Colin Campbell may be an insider but she's not an impartial one. That she's still in the Royals's camp tells me she's carrying a message for them. Although she makes a gratuitous stab at saying derogatory things about the Queen Mother, her real target is Diana, Princess of Wales, of whom she has a positively sulfurous view.

Unfortunately, her credibility suffers when she paints Diana as completely without redeeming qualities, and the public as fools for not seeing through Diana's act. Like the Royals, whose minion she is, Lady Campbell is unable to accept that Diana could not sustain an "act" for so long if she were truly a phony.

Lady Campbell further injures her case with her claim that Prince Charles is the innocent party. Even for a man who's lived his life in a royal cocoon, he can't be as naive as Lady Campbell paints him without making him seem stupid, and no divorce is so completely one-sided when there's blame to be assigned.

Originally British society put these Hanoverian misfits on the throne to preserve the Church of England and Protestantism. Now that religious warfare is no longer a reason for keeping the Mountbatten-Windsor dynasty, maybe it's time the British allowed them to get a life--to rise or fall according to their individual merits just like us common folks. But then, we wouldn't be treated to such an entertaining soap opera, would we?

5 out of 5 stars This is a picture album of a loving family........1999-01-29

This is an extremely outstanding album. All the pictures are captioned, and the album features quotations made by either the Prince or Princess of Wales, a famous author, journalist, or a famous magazine.

Opposite the title page, there is a handsome picture of the Prince and Princess at Highgrove. She is carrying William piggy-back while he if carries Harry on his hip. This picture serves as a theme throughout the book.

The album is divided into sections - A Royal Romance, A Family, Roving Ambassadors, Private Lives, and A Sense of Style. I shall take two or three from each of the section and the quote which accompies it.

A ROYAL ROMANCE: On the left is a full page of Harles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer when they announce their engagment. Beneath the title for this section, the Prince and Princess begin their honeymoon cruise in Gibraltar. This quote is at the bottom of the page, 'I've met all Prince Charles' girlfriends, and you're streets ahead of all of 'em. If he doesn't marry you, he's out of his tiny mind.' ARTHUR EDWARDS

A charming picture of Diana when she was still a kindergarter teacher. 'That enchanting teenager with the chubby cheeks and frilly shirt..." JUDY WADE. A picture of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. 'With Prince Charles beside me I cannot go wrong. LADY DIANA SPENCER. Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer after their first official appearance together at Goldsmith Hall in London. 'In Diana's early months of public life the strain of her new-found position as the world's most famous woman told, and only by the enormous iffort of will did she cope with the unbearable attention and lack of privacy.' ALAN HAMILTON

There are two pages devoted to the wedding rehearsal and the wedding - splendid pictures. 'Our wedding was quite extraordinary as far as we're concerned. It made us bother extremely proud to be British.' 'When you marry in my position, you going to marry someone who, perhaps is one day going to be Queen. You've got to choose somebody very carefully, I think, who could fulfill this particular role, and it has got to be somebody pretty unusual.' THE PRINCE OF WALES. 'The cubbly-cheeked blonde hairdo vanished...a more stylish, more confident woman stands by the side of Prince Charles today. It says a lot for her steely determination that she has come through a period of awesome adjestment and emerged more dazzling than ever.' JUDY WADE.

A FAMILY: Under the title A Family is a picture of William and Harry at Highgrove. 'It's an affectionate family under perpetual scrutiny.' SIR ALSTAIR BURNET. Diana is holding William and there is a picture of all three - Charles, Diana, and William - while thay are on tour in Australia. 'The birth of our son has given us both more pleasure than you can imagine. It has made me incredibly proud and somewhat amazed.' PRINCE OF WALES. Rwo pages are devoted to Prince Charles and the two boys. 'He is a doting daddy and does everything perfectly.' THE PRINCESS OF WALES on Charles os a father. The next two pages are great with both parents and bother boys at Highrove.

ROVING EMBASSADORS: Beneath the title for this section are their passports. 'Charles and Diana are mirrors and examples of stalwart British qualities: civility, courtesy, and coziness, with a dash of styles and a bit of fun' TIME. The Prince and Princess of Wales are seated in identical chairs, each of them is smiling, and each of them is wearing the same color. 'To be modern, yet keep the mystique - that is the trick. It is a trick that Charles and Diana have gracefully mastered.' TIME

PRIVATE LIVES: The pictures in this section are very casual. Beneath this caption is a picture of Prince Charles joking with the crowd at polo. This section is devoted to the couple and their boys at Highgrove, on vacation, and at KP. 'Charles and Diana are arguably the most famous, the most glamourous couple in the world.'

A SENSE OF STTLE: This section is devoted almost entirely to Diana who is shown wearing many of the various styles of dresses and hats which she made famous. Pages 94-95 picture the Prince and Princess of Wales together surrounded by photographers. The last picture appears on P. 96 and features both the Prince and Princess walking through the streets of Budapest during a tour of Hungary in 1990. She is wearing a pink suit trimmed in purples, and his shirt and tie complement her outfit.

One must actually see the pictures and read the quotations simultaneously to fully appreciate these beautiful pictures and unique pictures of The Princes and Princess of Wales and their two young princes - William and Harry.

I love the series, and this one was very romantic and fun to read. The series plots the characters all too close together... don't we all wish we'd met a prince to marry, and our sister turns out to be a princess... wouldn't all our problems be solved in a heartbeat! Other than the authors having to deal with the pre-arranged unbelievable plot, just sticking to the romance was fun, fun, fun. In this whole series, I've read the entire book before I've gotten any sleep! Keep it up!

4 out of 5 stars What an excellent job, Ms Colter!.......2000-05-05

I'm generally not one to read, let alone write reviews of categoryromances, but in this case I'll make an exception. I was quite delighted with this book. Considering it is part of a series, and given the limitations imposed upon the writer by having the characters' names, the settings, and a fair bit of the plot predetermined for her, I'd say Ms Colter had quite a challenge before her. It must be much easier starting off with one's own ideas, characters and plot. I'd say the author has done a terrific job of weaving all these disparate strands together in a cohesive, entertaining fashion. I'll admit the name Damon Montague is absolutely putrid, and Shakespeare must be rolling in his cliched grave at how frequently and drearily over the centuries the name Montague has been employed as a high class moniker. Give us a break! Who thinks up these dud names, not to mention the boring generic names for the kingdoms? Whatever you do, don't blame the talented Ms Colter for these sorry boners! If readers want realism, find a Jane Rule book. If they want warmth, heart, humour and romance, all served up with a deft, magical touch, go back through Cara Colter's collection of titles, particularly Baby in Blue, A Bride Worth Waiting For, or Weddings Do Come True. They're all gems, and Ms Colter is about the only romance writer I will take time to read.

2 out of 5 stars Read Suzanne Brockmann's Royally Wed book and end there.......2000-05-03

This series has gone from okay to mediocre to just plain old bad.

It started off with Brockmann's Undercover Princess (one of the first books) and then it deteriorated into royal books about ANOTHER family, and now it's just bad. This book had a ludicrous plot and silly characters.

Don't feel that because you started the series you have to finish it.

      3 out of 5 stars OK...but not believable.......2000-04-27

On what planet would a Royal Prince propose to a woman he met an hour ago! Then after a week of marriage, decides to give her up because he cares for her and wants to set her free! This stretches my imagination TOO far. The mystery of sister Victorias kidnapping, and introducing Rachels daughter Carly were very enjoyable. The lead-in to the next book was promising. This 'Royally Wed' series has been REALLY good,(for the most part). I would recommend reading the whole group!
