Not as stunning as McEwan's later novels.......2007-09-02
I admire the fiction of Ian McEwan but I did not like this novel as much as his others that I have read: in particular Saturday, Amsterdam, Enduring Love, and Atonement. The Comfort of Strangers seems like it should have been a short story rather than a short novel. It is a typical "stalker" story with little depth or interest that I could find. As expected in a McEwan novel it has some strange twists but not nearly as twisted as the twists in his later novels. Basically the story, plot, is an adolescent fantasy, a nightmare, a weird daydream that I did not find gripping.
I was reminded in some ways of Kafka's The Trial. McEwan leaves much unstated and unsaid--as with Kafka much is murky and unexplained but one has that "trapped" feeling. McEwan uses adjectives very sparingly, almost not at all, which gives his writing a somewhat detached unemotional and odd sense. This does not work as well with McEwan's The Comfort of Strangers as it does with Kafka.
I do not feel that this is a successful attempt by McEwan. The effect for me was thin, shallow, and not very entertaining or enlightening. I recommend that readers skip this book and read the later novels of McEwan.
ONE FREAKY READ..........2007-07-17
Ironically, The Comfort of Strangers was the book I had earmarked to tackle next when I read a recommendation of it by horror-writer, Jeanne Cavelos. She lists it as an "innovative horror novel." Is The Comfort of Strangers a horror novel? Yes. Is it a literary novel? Yes. No one can better bridge these two categories than Ian McEwan.
I can't give away much of the plot - the book is far too short. A vacationing couple meets a mysterious stranger and strange things ensue. The city they are traveling in "may or may not be Venice," according to the book's back cover. For me, it works better to picture Venice. It evokes both Death in Venice and Don't Look Now, and fits in well with the tone of the novel.
Read this as horror or read this as literary fiction. Just don't expect a predictable payoff.
Interesting and recommended (mainly for its brevity).......2007-05-30
This was an interesting story that caused me to think about and question the main characters motivations. It moved along at a nice pace and McEwan did not get overly bogged down in minute details of surroundings or histories.
I was just a little bit dissapointed in the ending simply because it didn't seem to make a heck of a lot of sense to me and the old ' i will leave things rather vague and open to interpretation' ending can be annoying.
But overall it was an enjoyable read and did whet my appetite to try another of his works.
WHY?.......2007-05-19
I was disappointed by this book. I think a short novel like this has to sparkle and it didn't at all. Most of the book concerns a couple on holiday walking about the shops and restaurants etc. In the latter part they get to know this couple who seem overly keen to be friendly and then there is the ending, which I won't spoil for you, that just left me thinking why on earth write such an empty, zero of a book.
So-so McEwan.......2006-11-15
Ian McEwan is a good writer, but not every one of his books is a worthwhile read. The Comfort of Strangers, a brief novel of less than 130 pages, is slightly above average, but is not really as deep nor compelling as some of his other books (such as Atonement or Enduring Love).
In an unnamed European city, Mary and Colin vacation. Lovers for a while, they have never gone as far as marriage or even living together, and as the book opens, they have drifted into a blandly content relationship that often fades into tedium. More than being bored with each other, these are just bored people; on this vacation, they seem to meander aimlessly, unable to really enjoy anything.
Into their lives appears Robert, a local who becomes friendly with them very quickly and tries to show them a better time. Although generally obnoxious, he somehow does help Mary and Colin get closer. Robert, however, is not as nice as he seems, nor is his wife Caroline. By the time Mary and Colin realize this, they are already ensnared.
McEwan's minimalist approach to this story is only partially effective. There are no other characters of note beyond these four, and even they have no last names. Robert and Caroline, in fact, have more detailed backgrounds than Mary and Colin, of whom we know little of substance. On the one hand, this bare-bones approach gives the story a nice starkness that is reminiscent of authors like Hemingway; on the other hand, the lack of detail makes it harder to really empathize with either of the two protagonists. There is nothing truly bad in this book, but little to make it really stand out either. This one is probably for McEwan fans only who want to read his early works.

Romance Elements Can't Save This One.......2005-08-21
Maybe I am in a bad mood this week, but this book was the second to let me down in a bad way. Herring's romance stories are usually at least well-constructed with somewhat believable characters and sex, but "Comfort of Strangers" is so overfull with unlikeable characters, murky plot events and laughable dialogue that the usual solid elements can't save it from being a bad read.
One little thing that annoyed me was that I couldn't tell if the author meant to satirize sci-fi or was simply doing it badly. It never reached "so bad it's good" levels. So I think that the inhumane healer and sadistic leader of the Good Women were really supposed to be that way. Huh? There were several incomplete plot threads by the end of the story (please, let there be no sequel) and I didn't care if anyone was having good sex I disliked them all so much.
If Herring meant to make a worthwhile commentary on how evil influences can corrupt even good people she missed the boat on that one too. If this was supposed to be some kind of Xena effort in the character of Alaric, that didn't work either. She developed multiple characters and plot lines only to give them all shallow treatment.
I couldn't figure out what Herring was trying to do with this story. What was the point of it all? If a writer is going to write something sci-fi it must be more than a romance in space. I was hoping for a rogue asteriod to make it all go away.
Great romance, so-so sci-fi.......2003-08-06
Peggy Herring has consistently put out great works of fiction with characters that are likeable and unique. Fans of her work don't read for extensive plot, it's for the great character development. For me stories are character-driven and plot is secondary.
In "The Comfort of Strangers" the character development is as intriguing as in the rest of her books. There is humor, passion, confusion, and all ranges of emotions. As a lesbian romance it is top notch.
As science fiction... well, it leaves a lot to be desired. Anyone who enjoys watching science fiction movies will be a bit disappointed in this book. While some of the concepts are great (use of "Lidium" to power forcefields), what this book lacks is some punchy sci-fi vocabulary. Star Trek fans know what I mean... instead of unique phrases like "The Borg", "holodecks" and "photon torpedo banks" you have things in the book like "Star Fighters" (generic bad guys), "lasers" (generic space ship weapons) and "stun guns" (generic hand-held weapons). The unimaginative non-technical-sounding language detracts from the science of the fiction.
However once you get past that, you'll see that Ms. Herring's gift lies in character creation. Despite the weakness in the sci-fi department, I thought the character names were rather unique, imaginative and appropriate for the book. The character interactions are realistic and enjoyable. All in all this book is a lousy piece of science fiction, but an absolutely wonderful romance!
Campy little romance holds some fun.......2002-03-17
Long ago in an Intergalactic Corridor far, far . . . well you get the idea. This futuristic, science fiction story is a different kind of novel for Peggy Herring, typically a romance writer. Comfort of Strangers involves a coalition of cultures, including a few female-only ones, that are struggling against the neighboring "evil empire" of Corlon, under the leadership of a heinous and destructive man named Exidor.
The novel focuses on Lela, a young healer turned scientific researcher and her mother's partner, Kricorian who is a sort of administrative leader for the "K Sector," an agricultural planet that also trains healers. The borders between the coalition and Corlon are decaying. Corlon star fighters are launching raids on these peaceful inhabitants. Their primary defense is provided by the warrior-focused, all female culture of Amtec. Their warrior women have an impressive reputation as skilled and lethal fighters as well as phenomenal lovers.
Members of the coalition have decided to hold a summit to sort out differences and decide what to do about the increasing raids. A delegate to the summit, Lela has the royal attention of the beautiful young Tavia, the Amtec princess. Yet Lela is drawn to the enigmatic commander of the Amtec warriors, Alaric. Tall, blonde and beautiful, Alaric has risen through the military ranks by her impressive intellect, strength and self-discipline. This highly respected leader carefully hides her feelings and seems to be sending mixed messages to Lela. Is she just following orders?
Although Lela is the lead character and the focus of amorous speculation and attention; Lela's other mother, Kricorian is more sympathetically drawn. Widowed for 15 years, Kricorian finds herself drawn to another Amtec warrior, Jaret. Will Kricorian be able to let go of the survivor's guilt and the grief she feels for the death of Lela's mother? Can she risk her heart again? Can she relinquish control?
Herring does not suffer from any restrictions to political correctness. When Lela prepares to open a cylinder that she believes contains a live human being, she gives Kricorian a laser gun and tells her, "if it's ugly, zap it. Don't be afraid to use that thing. It's the capsule I want to study." (p 63) This attitude is a far cry from most scientific investigative standards today, never mind the ethical obligations of a healer! This is not the only example of a poor moral code among individual characters or cultures other than the dreaded Exidor and his star fighters. Tavia's treatment of Alaric is case in point.
At its best, scifi/fantasy not only entertains but provokes the imagination and prompts readers to question current cultural practices and trends in scientific research or other technological developments. Comfort of Strangers did not strike any such cords in this reader. It's a bit like watching an old "B" grade sci fi movie. The plot and characters are thin. The dialog has a campy sort of quality that makes for some amusing reading. However, it doesn't seem certain that was the writer's goal. In conclusion, Comfort of Strangers is not a bad story. However, it does not stand up to many far more interesting, complex, action packed scifi/fantasy stories that have been released in recent years from lesbian writers.
A new direction for Herring.......2002-02-14
The Comfort of Strangers is a new direction for Peggy Herring. She's taken her style of writing love stories and gone into science fiction. The book centers around Lela, a scientist, who has been raised in a society of lesbians. Her settlement is united with several others in a trade/protective group that includes a settlement of lesbian warriors and the other societies are mixed. Someone is threatening the safety of these societies, but no one is sure who the threat is. The story develops at a quick pace, maybe a little too quick in some places, but it keeps you engaged as women establish relationships and try to save their people from disaster. There's a character named Alaric who turns out to be especially interesting. The book could use a little more development in some areas, but is an enjoyable read. The nice thing about Herring is that, if you read her books in order, you see that her style is constantly improving. She also knows how to write an enticing love scene without going too far over the edge.

Book Description
In her dazzling new novel, Nicole Jordan tempts readers with a tale of breathless splendor and soul-searing passion.
Lovers in paradise . . .
He is a brilliant military commander . . . and every woman’s temptation. When Max Leighton unexpectedly comes to her golden Mediterranean island, Caro Evers longs to heal his emotional battle scars. But during one glorious night in his arms, she discovers a sensual master whose mere touch drives her to wild abandon.
She is the bewitching angel he can’t forget. Jaded by the glittering ballrooms of Regency London, Max returns to Cyrene to find the temptress who haunts his dreams . . . only to learn that Caro leads a dangerous double life. She’s a warrior as well as a healer—a member of a secret society of protectors, sworn to fight evil and tyranny across Europe.
Afraid to lose her heart to Max again, Caro vows to conquer her fierce tenderness for him and thwart his campaign to win her. Then a perilous mission of adventure takes them far from Cyrene’s sun-splashed shores, entwining their destinies and challenging their deepest desires.
Customer Reviews:
My least favorite Nicole Jordan novel.......2007-03-26
I hated the guy Max, he was way to arrogant and full of himself. He was very sought after by women - I don't particularly care for romances where the female feels she lacks beauty / charm / whatever, and the male is the opposite. Also the "Guardians" thing was totally hokey, I've thought that in the other Guardian books but this one really laid it on thick with King Arthur's Excaliber and all.
I really liked 'Prince of Pleasure' so started reading Nicole Jordan, but I don't much like her Cyrene / Guardian series, although 'Lord of Seduction' was pretty good.
Woaahh !.......2006-05-22
I just finished this book having picked it up in the bargains bin at the local newsagent, and being between books thought to give it at go.
It's my first Nicole Jordan book - talk about steamy!!
Looking at some of the other reviews, other titles by Nicole Jordan are more steamy ! Is it possible.
As the most recent reviewer said, there are sex scenes and then more sex scenes and yet again another sex scene - in between bits of plot.
Not that the plot was bad - it wasn't too bad. Caro was an interesting personality for in those times - the female warrior thing was somewhat hard to swallow but her being into medicine was interesting as there were vertually no female healers then, with the exception of midwives. Also, she was refreshingly opinionated, needing to be in control of her own life and somewhat temperamental (how thoroughly modern!!).
Max on the other hand while appealing, alot more could have been written about him (something more than the nightmares) making him far more interesting than just always wanting sex.
The Guardian aspect of the story I could accept particularly as it is set during the times of Napoleon which may have had groups of their type, however, bring in the sword of King Arthur, Excalibur, I found way too ridiculous.
Overall, I did enjoy this book - entertaining and ... woaahh!
Chick lit as opposed to chic lit !
He Really Wasn't All That Tempting...........2006-01-08
This is the second book by Nicole Jordan that I have read recently. "Lord of Seduction" was the other book I finished - it is actually the follow up book to "Master of Temptation" so, I read them out of order but, it really didn't make much of a difference.
I liked this book a little less than the first. Reason...I know Ms. Jordan is known for her steamy, sexy and passionate novels - and I'm all for that - but, in this book, it became too much of a good thing for me.
Why...the opening chapter already had our hero Max and our heroine Caro in a hot Cyrennian water spot giving massages and then having intercourse. They had only known each other for three days prior to this yet...the attraction was so strong for both that they indulged quickly before he left her island of Cyrene for good. They don't meet up again for a year until Caro goes to the mainland to find a fellow guardian to help her recover her mother like figure Isabel who has been captured and taken away. The minute the two lead characters meet up again...it's back to normal. They argue a little, build the attraction up again...then it's back to more sex. Frequent sex. Even though Caro is resistant at times...it still happens.
The sex passages were well written, tasteful and interesting but, it was simply TOO often for me. I want to be clear here...the intimacy felt like sex and really good lust not...intense passion built on romance and love. So...it left me a little cold. It was nice that Max recognized his attraction to Caro early and didn't fight it. Caro felt the same attraction but, fought it a little. But...they still ended up having sex all the time - they simply couldn't resist.
I prefer when an author allows characters to get to know one another, the attraction builds step by step and then it happens somewhere in the middle to ¾ of the way through the book. When an author builds the attraction high and deep enough the reader is as anxious for the leads to come together as the leads are themselves! This didn't happen in this book.
Too many sex scenes actually gets a little boring for me as all the expectation is taken away. I know what's going to happen so, I don't get to use my imagination or feel anticipation as is best.
I know these two characters were strong willed, intelligent, courageous and determined and usually I would give three cheers to such main leads but, for some reason once again...it felt like too much of a good thing. Max had plenty going on but, I still didn't connect or find him a stimulating main man. Especially when he orders her to "service him". Caro was more multi-dimensional so, she wasn't bad (almost a bit too adventuresome and heroic if you ask me).
The plot kept you busy with questions of when would Max find out about Caro's real interests, if Max would join the Guardians too, if Caro and Max would get married and if Isabel would be returned alive. So...plenty going on to keep you busy. But...the writing was simple and nothing got to complex fortunately. It couldn't in between all the sex scenes anyway!
Oh well...I have a few other books by Ms. Jordan I already bought and hope they are just a little more interesting to me. I still like her writing...I just wish there was a lot more a-n-t-i-c-i-p-a-t-i-o-n.
A beautiful, exciting love story.......2005-02-16
Master of Temptation was so wonderful and hot, I couldn't put down. Caro and Max were a fabulous couple, the island setting was fresh and beautiful, and the rescue of Isabella had me on the edge of my seat. Thank you for such wonderful stories, Ms. Jordan. They just get better and better.
Good but not quite as intense as her other series!.......2005-01-11
I love Jordan books - several I have read again and again --like Ecstacy!! This was good but perhaps it was the setting or maybe it was Caro - I am just not sure - but this was not the usual 5 star for me. I enjoyed the steamy scenes but even they did not compare to her other series. Mostly I just did not feel an in depth connection with the characters - Max I felt had much more to him than Jordan revealed in this book - I recommend this but would preface it that it does not quite live up to her other series--at least not yet!!

Review: How Do You Know He's Real?.......2007-06-14
In the book, How Do You Know He's Real, you'll get an inside look into the spiritual lives of 34 celebrities. Hagberg has compiled testimonies ranging from Kirk Cameron to Rudy Sarzo (former bass player for Ozzy Osbourne). Each story is remarkably different and it's amazing to read how God has worked in the lives of each of these well-known people.
Celebrities Share Their Christian Faith.......2007-05-31
The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.
Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.
Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."
Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."
Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.
There are stories here for anyone to enjoy and find spirit lifting.
Celebrities talk about God in their life.......2007-04-27
(Hagberg has written a companion book with the same title, subtitled God Unplugged)
How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.
The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.
Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.
The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. Several sound like the writer could be sitting at your kitchen table, chatting over the coffee pot. All of them are honest and share from their heart how God has acted in their life and how they know He's real.
Reading the accounts of God acting in both miraculous and mundane ways reminds us that no matter what a person does for a living, each of us are created beings who need a loving Savior and merciful God.
Armchair Interviews says: Up close and personal stories from celebrities.
COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!! Terrific Read!.......2006-05-18
I received this book as a gift and once I started, I couldn't put it down. Ms Hagberg has captured the beliefs of these well known and respected celebrities, sports figures, and musicians. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and can't wait to give copies of this one to all my friends. Order 2!
The book of a lifetime!.......2006-04-18
This is a book that you will no doubt want to share with everyone you know! (I certainly am!) It was so hard to put the book down - but worth it - just to extend the time and joy of reading it! GREAT content! GREAT author! I can't wait to read the next books in the series!
