This is the kind of book where you can smell and hear and see the fictional world the writer has created, so palpably does the atmosphere come through. Set on an island in the straits north of Puget Sound, in Washington, where everyone is either a fisherman or a berry farmer, the story is nominally about a murder trial. But since it's set in the 1950s, lingering memories of World War II, internment camps and racism helps fuel suspicion of a Japanese-American fisherman, a lifelong resident of the islands. It's a great story, but the primary pleasure of the book is Guterson's renderings of the people and the place.
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Ishmael Chambers, the one-man staff of the newspaper on San Piedro Island in Puget Sound, is covering the 1954 trial of a high school classmate accused of killing another classmate over a land dispute. Actor Peter Marinker--a stage veteran who has appeared in such movies as The Russia House and The Emerald Forest--takes us deep inside the world created by David Guterson in his award-winning 1994 novel. We learn the sensory details of life in a small fishing community; the emotional lives of people scarred inside and out by World War II; and the deep and unresolved prejudices toward the island's Japanese Americans, who were interned during the war--a tragedy that led to financial advantage for some islanders. Marinker deliberately but nimbly moves from the characters' distinctive voices to the poignant interior perspectives of the soulful, wounded Chambers as he tells a combination love story, murder mystery, and painful history lesson. (Running time: 15 hours, 10 cassettes) --Lou Schuler
Book Description
Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award
American Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award
San Piedro Island, north of Puget Sound, is a place so isolated that no one who lives there can afford to make enemies. But in 1954 a local fisherman is found suspiciously drowned, and a Japanese American named Kabuo Miyamoto is charged with his murder. In the course of the ensuing trial, it becomes clear that what is at stake is more than a man's guilt. For on San Pedro, memory grows as thickly as cedar trees and the fields of ripe strawberries--memories of a charmed love affair between a white boy and the Japanese girl who grew up to become Kabuo's wife; memories of land desired, paid for, and lost. Above all, San Piedro is haunted by the memory of what happened to its Japanese residents during World War II, when an entire community was sent into exile while its neighbors watched. Gripping, tragic, and densely atmospheric,
Snow Falling on Cedars is a masterpiece of suspense-- one that leaves us shaken and changed.
"Haunting.... A whodunit complete with courtroom maneuvering and surprising turns of evidence and at the same time a mystery, something altogether richer and deeper."--Los Angeles Times
"Compelling...heartstopping. Finely wrought, flawlessly written."--The New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
Very good (somewhat) historical novel.......2007-08-05
This is not a fast paced read but it is so rich with detail of the characters and the places of its time you can almost feel you're there. The descriptions of the island of San Piedro sent me looking for it on a map of the Puget Sound area only to find there is no such place. I wish Mr. Guterson had included a glossary for the fishing jargon and the colloquialisms of northwest Washington of that time; that would have made it even more interesting for me.
Also a good cultural study of the interactions of Caucasian and non-Caucasian Americans and how much war influences and divides us such as we are experiencing now.
Awesome book!.......2007-07-30
I bought this book for my daughter to read for an honors English class. I read it first and had forgotten that I had watched the movie years ago. I absolutely was saturated by the story. I would recommend it for anyone!
Suspenseful and descriptive novel.......2007-07-14
During the time of Japanese Internment and WWII Japanese settlers strive to live in dignity, finding comfort relying on their old Japanese traditions and customs which ultimately left one white man who courted a Japanese woman broken hearted and another white man who tried to sell and enter into a contract a piece of land to Japanese in a mysterious demise whose trial is the focus of the novel. In the end though truth, heroism and rule of law prevailed over racism and jealousy.
Exposing the Human Condition.......2007-06-25
At its bare bones level, the literary genre here is a murder mystery in which the reader learns of events essentially through witness testimony as it is given in a courtroom trial. And this aspect of the story is quite good and well-crafted, in and by itself. But at a deeper level, the backdrop of time and place reveals the deeply ingrained prejudices and suspicions that Americans felt and directed against Japanese-Americans who were living in the American northwest in the WWII years following Pearl Harbor. Very effectively and in a non-judgmental way, the author spotlights this chapter in America's history when completely innocent Japanese-Americans were forced from their homes, uprooted from occupations and earning capabilities, experienced painful alienation in relationships within their communities and ultimately were interned in camps until war's end. Woven throughout, the human condition of bigotry is nakedly exposed but thankfully so are honor, grace and integrity.
well-written, poetic.......2007-06-05
Sensitive and well-written story that grips the reader. The descriptive passages and the character development are splendid. This novel works on so many levels: love story, mystery, courtroom drama, history. The book has a poetic feel that charms the reader.

Customer Reviews:
A useful, if somewhat annoying (to me) guide.......2006-11-01
There are some very good points about this guide, and one point that made me want to tear it in half; I will try to describe it so that the reader can make their own decision.
I think that Snow Falling on Cedars: A Novel was a so-so book. I found it uninvolving, and I cannot see why one would bother reading it when there are so many excellent non-fiction works on the themes. Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James Houston wrote a classic book on the internment called Farewell to Manzanar: A True Story of Japanese American Experience During and After the World War II Internment. Mary Matsuda Gruene wrote another book: Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese American Internment Camps, and she has a bibliography listing many other books about the Japanese-American experience. Matsuda, incidentally, came from a family of strawberry farmers living on an island in the Puget Sound. People interested in the lives of fisherfolk can read HUNGRY OCEAN, THE: A SWORDBOAT CAPTAIN'S JOURNEY, Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay, The Lives of Men, The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea (P.S.), etc.
Having warned of my basic lack of enthusiasm, the majority of the Cliff Notes is a competent and useful guide. One of the best parts of the guide is that Wasowski has provided lists explaining a variety of terms, including boating, fishing, contemporary slang, Japanese words, etc. I hope that the authors of some other guides will take a lesson.
I think that there are two missing themes. One is the position of women in the family. Some people will not find it odd that Carl and Kabuo feel little need to consult their wives when making decisions that affect their entire family, but some people today will find strange; it was much more common during the period when this is set than it is today. Guterson cannot really address that directly, but I think it would help if it were in this guide. The other issue, which neither the guide nor Guterson seem to recognize is that Etta does the same thing to her son, Carl, that she does to Kabuo: she deprives him of the opportunity to make his living on land his family owned. If Kabuo feels strongly about land that his family owned for seven years, how might Carl feel about land that has been in the family for several generations?
On the minus side is a vehement objection which I am certain many literary students will not understand. Wasowski commments the "Some question Guterson's style ... or else they think he just didn't succeed in what he attempted to do." He responds to the criticism: "Most readers tend to recognize that prejudice on either side of a relationship can lead to misunderstandings and that someone living with one foot in two different cultures is not fully part of either."
Since I often receive similar comments when I criticize "serious fiction", it is presumably necessary to point out that his response is a non sequitor, from the Latin "it does not follow", meaning "a statement (as a response) that does not follow logically from or is not clearly related to anything previously said." (Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged. Merriam-Webster, 2002, online, Oct 31, 2006).
Whether or not one likes Guterson's style does not necessarily have anything to do with whether or not one understands the pressures of conflicting loyalties. One could understand perfectly and still not like Guterson's book. Themes are different from writing techniques. Perhaps Wasowski means to say that Guterson's development of the theme is so good, so novel, and so important as to make wading through his verbosity worthwhile. I wouldn't agree, but that at least would make sense.
A useful companion to the book, if not a great example of clarity in writing.

A considered and intelligent piece of writing.......2002-06-24
This is the third such guide to have been published about Guterson's novel - and easily the best. (It's a novel that I've taught since 1997.) It's not perfect but there is plenty of good material in here to get students thinking - Haytock is particularly eloqunent on Guterson's narrative technique. And she also provides the best novel/movie comparison that I've read so far.

A little fun in the sun with a beautiful woman may be just the inspiration he needs to cure his writer's block. No fuss. No commitment. But a 'good girl' like Allison? No way! Then It's Time For Action. When Allison makes her move, every bachelor bone in Scott's body tells him to swim for safety. Customer Reviews:
2nd Book in the Pearl Island Trilogy.......2006-01-29
Scott returns back to Pearl Island to solve his writers block. He rents a room and old historicic B&B for a month and finds one of the owners a perfect distraction or maybe a muse. Allison is a very shy women who finds having a affair with a famous author and exciting option. This book has ghosts, an old mystery, real heartaches and a great romance. I am off to read the third story - enjoy!
Charismatic leads result in cute romantic story.......2005-08-11
Suffering from a massive case of writer's block and celibacy, writer Scott Lawrence checks into the Pearl Island B&B for assistance with both his problems. As a young boy, the mansion on Pearl Island held a lot of memories.
Allison St. Claire co-owns the B&B with her brother and sister. She has been a good girl most of her life, and yearns to branch out and be naughty for a change. After checking out the latest set of guests, she sets her target of lust on Scott.
When he first sets eyes on Allison, Scott is attracted to her but knows that she is a Mrs. Right, not a Mrs. Right Now. When she propositions him to a no strings relationship, it takes a little convincing, but Scott takes her up on it. Neither plans on falling for each other, but fall they do.
Allison's family has had a long-standing feud with the LaRoche family, so it is only a matter of time before Scott's association with the LaRoche family will throw a wrench in their romance when she assumes he has ulterior motives for being with her.
The story overflows with chemistry, and the two leads are well suited, even when a young teen with abandonment issues gets tossed into the mix. Followed up with the story of big brother Adrian in "Don't Tempt Me."
Not bad..........2005-02-21
This book isn't bad, nor does it shine. I didn't like it as much as I liked Ortolon's first book, Falling For You. Although the history of the Pearl is interesting, it kept popping up too much. A little too redundant and...somewhat boring. Allison's character was too complex. A bit annoying at times. Nothing seriously held back Allison's and Scott's relation, only Allison. Frusterating. Overall, not a bad book. Read it if you have time, though I would recommend you check it out from the library before buying.
Oh yeah! Lead us on!.......2004-05-04
Two words: Loved It!
I mean who wouldn't fall for a heroine who just once in her life wants to be a little bit bad? And she gets her wish when she meets up with a darling and sexy writer staying at her Inn on Pearl Island.
LEAD ME ON, by Julie Ortolon is the second in the St. Claire "Pear Island Trilogy" and it's a keeper! Allison, our herione is great, especially when she decides to bust out of her shell - - and into the arms of the perfect hero, brooding bad-boy-writer, Scott Lawrence. The two are perfectly matched and it's quite hilarious to watch Scott try to resist Allison, when she's hell-bent on having him. The dialog is witty, the story-line fascinating and the ending is heart-warming!
Ohh...and lets not forget what we buy romance for. Yes, the love scenes are hot and Julie manages to keep them sweet at the same time.
Flip to the black underwear scene if you like spoilers,,,you'll laugh and then use the book as a fan when it heats up!
Loved it!
not bad but not great,.......2004-02-26
i won't go as far as to tell people not to buy this book because it wasn't all that bad, what i will say tho is try your local library first before purchasing it. the story is okay enough but a bit overdone and the characters don't really shine, at least for me they didn't, as a rule i enjoy this writer but this wasn't one of her best, sorry.

Tender friendship and a mystery--a good read.......2001-09-15
And Grace Will Lead Me Home is a tender portrayal of friends surviving and even enjoying contemporary life, children, and work. I especially enjoy the setting--the references to old time and church music right out of my own culture. The mystery holds up and the characters are a delight. I keep thinking I'll run into one of them in town some weekend! Read and enjoy!

Inspiring business saga.......2004-08-13
Now that Martin Scorsese is releasing his long-planned biopic THE AVIATOR, the life oh Howard Hughes starring Leo di Caprio from TITANIC as Hughes, expect a new flood of interest in the mysterious relict and his weird ways, especially towards the end of his life. Expect parallel interest in CALL ME PAT, a title from about ten years ago newly re-issued to meet the boom in Hughes studies. Hyland was a Navy radioman and a brave sailor indeed, whose exploits in the service deserve even more expansion than they merit here. Funny how the patriotic among us get short shrift while the merely wealthy, like Hughes, garner all the attention. By the end of the 1950s, Hyland (charmingly called "Pat") had taken over the operations of Hughes Aircraft while his boss, HH, was battling it out on every front with his movie star wife, Jean Peters.
Until 1980 this remained Hyland's job, not only his vocation, but his avocation. Between him and Hughes a mysterious bond remained. Hughes had stepped away from the glamorous, Hepburn and Gardner and RKO life by the time Hyland became CEO oh Hughes Aircraft, and so this wonderful book will be a kind of sequel to the Scorsese effort, which insyead concentrates on the less dismal, exciting and earlier Hollywood years and features a cameo by Gwen Stefani of No Doubt as Jean Harlow, the tragic platinum blonde whom Hughes directed in HELLS ANGELS and sought to dominate elsewhere.

Book Description
Leaders talk about the essence of leadership in new bookhow they took the lead in their own lives In her second book, Take Me To Your Leader: Taking The Lead In Our Lives (iUniverse, Inc.), Debra E. Talbert, has expanded the concept of leadership to a new level: an individual and deeply personal one.
It's a story so common in the news today, that we have all but ceased to notice. Lilly was born in the worst of the inner-city slums. She was the oldest of five children. Both of her parents were heroin addicts. By the time she was fifteen, two of her siblings had been killed in drug related incidents. Her father was dead. Her Mother was in prison. And she was addicted to crack. Today, however, this woman a respected corporate manager who has acquired a reputation for developing leaders. It begs the questionwho's in charge here?
In her book, Take Me To Your Leader: Taking The Lead In Our Lives, Author, Debra E. Talbert (Take the Lead Consulting), brings the stories of real people who have had significant turning points in their lives. "One moment they were staring at an insurmountable obstacle, and the next moment they were blazing a trail. I wanted to know what was actually happening in that moment
what allowed them to see a different possibility." Through hundreds of interviews, from people all over the world, Debra has uncovered the things we are all doingevery dayto take the lead in creating our lives.
"So often we think about the concept of leadership as leading outleading others. How do I get the organization to do what it needs to do? How do I inspire my clients, employees, kids? But, truly we are the most effective at leading others when we have first taken the lead in our own lives."
Take Me To Your Leader: Taking the Lead In Our Lives, brings together seven patterns of belief and practice that help us in asking questions about what is possible in our lives. The seven patterns include three core beliefsWho do I think I am? (Identity). What do I think about power? (Influence). What will I do about the pain? (Pain) And, four life practices: Choice, Vision, Meaning, and Reverence.
"In my work I have an opportunity to meet some remarkable leadersin corporate America, public sector, and militarymany of them quite famous. Many of them have had extraordinary achievements as leaders in our society. But it was their personal stories that really touched me. I will never forget a base commander I met once who was about to retire. He described the transition from leading outto leading in as, `the most profound endeavor of my career.'"
Debra E. Talbert is an international consultant, speaker and workshop leader in the field of organizational and leadership development. Debra's first book: The Gypsy Sings: A Trilogy to Celebrate the Gypsy In The Soul, published with artist Gretchen McGarigle-Butler, is a fictionalized group of stories which also looks at the vitality of our inner lives.
"Take Me To Your Leader: Taking The Lead In Our Lives, is about that moment when something in us shifts and allows us to make different choices, and to create a different story for ourselves. It is the collected wisdom of people who have faced that moment locked in board rooms, stopped at traffic lights, standing at pulpits, sitting in churches, staring in the mirror. People who, whatever else they were doing, made the choice to take the lead."

This is a delightful book. It's incredibly well-written and is enjoyable to read. But more importantly, the messages are powerful. It helps us understand what it means to become a leader in your own life. I highly recommend this book!
Book Description
The small New England town of Dorsetville is filled with quirky, loveable characters much like those who populated Andy Griffith’s Mayberry.
Dorsetville is all aflutter. The housekeeper at St. Cecilia’s rectory, Mrs. Norris, has quit in a huff, and the rectory is beginning to look like a college dorm. Father Dennis could lend a hand, but since his cooking show, The Fat Friar, has gained popularity, he’s become, well, moody.
Nellie Anderson and Harry Clifford are about to tie the knot—that is if someone can find the missing wedding invitations. Bungling Deputy Hill has been left in charge since the sheriff is sick, but will the town survive in the meantime?
Meanwhile, Father James is helping an ex-convict learn to resume his life. Valerie Kilbourne, a single mother, needs money for a very expensive operation for her twin daughters. And Lori Peterson, who has had her share of tragedies, will be asked to face another.
Katherine Valentine’s keen insights into human nature and extraordinary sense of humor make for characters you’ll want to know for years.

Grace Will Lead Me Home.......2004-09-21
In her third installment in the Dorsetville series, Katherine Valentine reunites us with her cast of colorful characters from A Miracle for St. Ceclia's & A Gathering of Angels. By now the characters feel like family. From the first page, you'll feel like you're returning home.
Ranging from light-hearted story lines, like the priests losing housekeeper Mrs. Norris, leaving them in a house of chaos, to some more serious subject matters, the novel remains cozy, charming & entertaining. If you're looking for a feel good book that has small town charm and lovable characters, this is the book for you.
Another Dorsetville wonderful read!!!.......2004-08-02
Once again the characters in the fictional town of Dorsetville are faced with a host of challenges. Mrs. Norris leaves in a huff, leaving poor Father James without a housekeeper just as a new boarder shows up and Father Dennis is distracted by his new cooking show, The Fat Friar. Harry Clifford has finally asked Nellie Anderson to marry him, but things get a little rocky when the wedding invitations are lost by Deputy Hill.
But there are also hardships to get through like the loss of a baby, the need for forgiveness, and the hope for a miracle. Once again, Katherine Valentine skillfully tucks the message of God's undying faithfulness into the ordinary lives of this unforgetable host of characters.
More Fun and Inspiration from Dorsetville!.......2004-08-02
Since the day I happened across her first book, A Miracle for St. Cecilia's in my local bookstore, I've been a huge fan of the writing of Katherine Valentine. With Grace Will Lead Me Home, her third installment in the beloved Dorsetville series, Ms. Valentine continues to build my love for this community of characters and their stories. Dorsetville has been likened to a Catholic Mitford, (made famous by author Jan Karon), but these wonderful novels transcend denominational lines and offer a tremendous message of hope and inspiration. Grace Will Lead Me Home will stand on its own merit if you haven't read A Miracle for St. Cecilia's or A Gathering of Angels. But if you love great fiction as much as I do, do yourself a favor and enjoy all three! Now I'm just anxious to see what will be going on around Dorsetville in #4! Lisa
Book Description
When a loved one dies, we embark on a journey that is marked by anguish, confusion, fear, and loneliness. For African Americans, the grief journeys often includes more complicated and painful emotions: frustration with the knowledge that black men and women have a greater chance of dying from major common diseases than their white counterparts; anger at the frequency of drug- and violence-related deaths; and the collective grief of a community that has buried too many of its young people.
In Lead Me Home, Carleen Brice gently guides you through the strange terrain of grief to the promise of home-a place where we have not only survived our losses, but are wiser and stronger because of them. She shares her personal story of loss and recovery, as well as the stories of others, so that you will know you are not alone. Here are practical tips for making difficult passage, as well as spiritual inspiration for helping you hang on until you make it to welcoming shores.

Book Description
"Pastor. What a beautiful word. What a unique relationship it conveys.... Each time someone calls me pastor, I am awestruck.... It humbles me, but I am grateful. There is no higher privilege than being a pastor." So writes H. B. London, who once again joins with his frequent collaborator Neil Wiseman to encourage and inspire church leaders with their most passionate, stirring book to date. They Call Me Pastor is an unabashed celebration of the deeply felt bond between a pastor and the congregation he serves-a testimony to the love of God and the miracles it can work in the lives of a shepherd and his flock if only His love is shared and allowed to flourish.

A Wonderful Addition To A Pastoral Library.......2006-10-23
My highest recommendation. If you are a pastor, then you know the joys of your calling from God, as well as the labor and trials that go along with it.
This book by Neil Wiseman, and H.B. London, will enrich your ministry, because it addresses many of the facets of serving the local church that you have probably already experienced.
Every pastor needs insight. This book delivers it in a big way. You will be blessed and encouraged, but most of all, you will find that others have gone down your road before you, and have provided a resource of experiences and good sound pastoral advice.
A must-have resource for all church leaders..........2001-01-12
If you want to greatly enhance the leadership of your church, place this book in their hands. With years of experience, personal stories, inciteful observations, and a conversational style, Wiseman and London Jr. present a book that addresses the highs and lows, elations and frustrations, and the certainties and doubts that each church leaders faces. They Call Me Pastor was a rich blessing for me, and I trust your personal life and ministry will reap the same reward.

This 40 day retreat was a breath of fresh air to me. I used it for morning devotions and I'm still (three months later) trying to absorb all of JKD's insights. She writes with a passion for God and her spiritual thoughts are well worth your time to study. I am hooked. I'm in the process of reading all of her books.

step-by-step-instructions for leading a group.......2001-04-24
This slim, plain looking, little book is evidence that you can't judge a book by its cover. A wealth of information awaits the reader of this book. I was looking for an instruction guide for new group leaders and this book is a stand-alone resource. Initially, it describes the different types of groups. It then goes on to give a very solid foundation in group dynamics and psychology. However, unlike many books it goes beyond the theoretical and addresses the step-by-step practical issues for group leaders including opening, designed and ending group discussions. Finally it gives solid, simple methods for dealing with problems that might arise. Bottom line....this book is 99 pages full of useful facts and info on group leadership...best for the beginner but will provide experts with great tips too.
