Book Description

A Fancy Affair Bridal Salon
Forest Hills, Queens

"Did you know that one of your hips is higher than the other?" the seamstress asked me in a totally conversational tone.

"I didn't," I said. "I never knew that. But I'm glad you told me."

The seamstress had the decency to look embarrassed. She ducked her head back down and continued pinning.

Perhaps that had been the reason why Blind Dates One, Two and Three hadn't been interested. It wasn't the smoking, after all. It was my Hip Issue. And just my luck that Blind Date #4 was with a doctor, whose business it was to notice such deformities.

See Jane Date will speak to singles everywhere. At once warm and witty, this look into the life of 28-year-old assistant editor Jane Gregg, screams, "You are not alone!" Case in point: See Jane . . .

-- Endure two months of bridesmaid hell for her younger cousin's wedding
-- Brilliantly dodge being fixed up with Grammy's next-door neighbor by fibbing that she, um, already has a boyfriend
-- Date . . . like crazy to find one suitable guy to bring to said wedding

Okay, find one suitable guy to love. Was that so much to ask?

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2005-11-09

This is one of the best 'chic lit' books out there. It's funny, clever & something you can truly relate to. I loved it so much I finished it in one sitting.

1 out of 5 stars Yuck! What a whiny &&%$*!!!!.......2005-07-21

Dear lord, this is one of the most tedious books I have read in ages. I generally love the Chick Lit genre, but this book is just annoying. I find the writing boring and tedious and often quite juvenile. The character is completely self-absorbed and a whiny... Blech, it's really quite awful.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2005-07-18

this is a decent book to read, that helps you to feel normal about your own feelings about dating and stuff.

SEE JANE DATE by Melissa Senate was pretty funny and very fast moving. Jane Gregg works in publishing for POSH PUBLISHING. She is frustrated - she has worked her butt off but has yet to get a promotion. She is aspiring to become an Assistant Editor, especially now since she has taken over her boss's projects. Her boss, Gwen, is off work on maternity leave, and has given Jane the project of all projects: she is to oversee the book by semi-famous actress Natasha Nuteley, whom Jane refers to as "Gnatasha" instead (the G is silent). Jane and Natasha went to school together, and while Natasha was the most popular girl in school, Jane hated her with a passion. Now, Natasha has come back to ruin Jane's life, but if Jane can get this book edited and published, it may mean a promotion and the recognition she deserves.

In the mean time, Jane has been invited to her cousin Dana's wedding. (Jane does not care for Dana either). Dana's claim to fame is that Natasha once babysat her, and so it is quite a coup that Jane is working on Natasha's book, a tell-all almost-porno memoir of an affair she had with a very famous actor, and so Natasha is invited to the wedding. Jane does not want to have to attend the wedding without a boyfriend and so she gets her friends to help her get set up on a number of blind dates, hoping that one of these men will become that date to the wedding. This in itself was pretty funny and would have been enough to keep this book going.

I found SEE JANE DATE a little bit heavier (in spots) than the average chick lit. There were some moments where it was very serious in tone, especially when it came to Jane remembering her deceased parents, and some of the bonding scenes she had with Natasha. For this type of book, however, this was a good read, had a good plot, and I hope to read more by Melissa Senate. Very funny and recommended for those who love chick lit.

3 out of 5 stars So THIS is chick lit! .......2005-06-09

Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable quick read, although it started off rough. It was just too much -- too whiny, too superficial, too... like a 20's version of Sex in the City. But I hung with it, and found a few recognizable nuggets of myself, although I've never suffered through the "gotta find a man or I'm worthless" mindset.

The narrative is informal and flows easily, making you feel like one of the girls.

After reading some reviews and synopses of other chick lit pieces, however, I think this is enough for me for a while.

This story was just a bit too much for me to swallow. The characters were very well written, but the premise was too far-fetched. By a used copy if you want to complete the set.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating shape shifter romance.......2007-04-24

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Shape Shifter Lucaine "Luc" Herrick is desperate. His best friend's Halfling daughter is wasting away from cancer and does not half much time left. When rumor reaches the NY pack all the way from TX about a possible Halfling healer, Luc is sent to investigate. Once before he could not save someone he cared about from dying and he needs hope to keep him going. He will not fail this time. Even when the person he is looking for turns out to be his mate.

Samantha "Sam" Warren has the power to heal animals with only her touch but if this became common knowledge, she would be exploited for her gift. When a strange but compelling man shows up begging her assistance, as afraid as Sam is to reveal her ability, she can't bear to destroy his hope.

Someone or something else is in TX, giving the locals reason to believe there is a werewolf in town. Now Luc must explain to Sam what she is and why her gift is so important to their kind. But when someone makes it clear they want Sam for their own purposes, Luc must do whatever it takes to protect her, even if it means kidnapping her himself.

I loved the different spin Karen Whiddon puts on her Shape Shifter society, especially the novelty of the legendary Halfling Healers. What a brilliant way to distance Touch of the Wolf from the usual Shape Shifter concept. The idea of rare halflings using their power differently from other halflings and full Shifters out there is quite a novel concept and totally believable in this society. I also loved how Luc does not truly understand her gift... no one does... and we are educated right along with him as to the limits to Sam's abilities.

Luc is a true alpha wolf male. He is strong and powerful, unafraid of throwing his weight around when it's needed. Yet when he meets Sam, he melts into a kind and gentle giant when he's with her. Yet the true instincts of a predator never leave him, as is evidenced by the great lengths he goes to in protecting Sam, not caring what she or anyone else thinks. She is his Mate and nothing can stop him from doing whatever it takes to keep her safe.

The mystery of the stranger in TX and their purpose there is very well done. This adds another tension laced thread to the greater tale and Luc's purposes for being in TX at all. When it was revealed who the stranger is and what they want, I was shocked at the turn of events and what follows.

Touch of the Wolf was my first foray into the supernatural world of Karen Whiddon's The Pack and is sure not to be my last. I was immediately sucked in to the story, eagerly turning pages and unwilling to stop reading even for a minute. Too bad my real life interfered with that annoying thing called a job... I was fascinated with the society Whiddon has created, in all its complex glory and am eager to go back and read previous books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Suberb paranormal romance .......2007-03-11

Werewolves have the ability to heal themselves, but changelings (half-breed shifters) cannot and therefore need healers. In two generations of Pack births no new healer has been born and some like Lucaine Herrick think healers are a myth. His pack disagrees with his assessment; so when three year old Lucy suffers from an inoperable brain tumor, he is sent to Anniversary, Texas to see if Samantha Warren a Healer.

When he first sees Samantha, Lucaine is disgusted with his poor timing as he realizes she is his mate; he wants to escape and run like the wolf, but first he must fulfill the quest. Samantha is unaware that she is a Halfling who has the Healer's talent instead of the shifting trait. Luc tries to get Sam to admit she is a healer as he is convinced she might be the real thing, but she denies her "heritage" and having such ability. Another ailing Changeling needs Sam to save his life and he will do what it takes to force her to do so while Luc will risk his life to keep his mate safe.

This paranormal romance is filled with excitement, intrigue, tension, and danger as Karen Whiddon creates a fine tale of a believable sub-society surviving within the larger purebred human environs. Luc is a strong-willed male, who proves he is a perfect match for the feisty vulnerable heroine. However, it is Sam who brings plausibility to this entertaining werewolf romantic suspense as she struggles with her universe turned inside out when she learns werewolves and changelings exist.

Daughter of a werewolf mother and human father, Cassidy Holt is orphaned by age seven and raised by her human aunt and uncle, who despise her wolf blood. At 22, determined to find her mother's family, Cassidy travels to London where she meets her distant cousin, Braden Forster, the powerful and charismatic Earl of Greyburn. Cassidy's wolf instincts are strong and she is drawn to the handsome earl, as he is to her. But Braden has devoted his life to preserving his clan's dynasty of werewolf blood, and due to a closely guarded secret, he believes that he cannot claim Cassidy as his mate. Instead, he betroths her to his younger brother, Quentin. As Cassidy struggles to come to grips with her werewolf heritage, she and Braden are drawn together by mutual passion. But Braden is a man of deep commitments and a tortured past that threatens any hope of a happy future for the two lovers. And falling in love couldn't have come at a more difficult time, for Braden's life and his leadership of the clan are endangered by the bitter hatred of an evil werewolf.

Krinard's world of werewolves, with their blend of human emotion and animal instinct, is every bit as believable as the novel's descriptions of London and the English countryside. The rigidly structured human society in which Braden and Cassidy live provides a stark contrast to the wildness of their wolf heritage, while Braden's darkness of soul is balanced by Cassidy's innocence and faith. Add a strong plot to this story of shape-shifting werewolves and heroic characters and the result is a terrific paranormal romance. --Lois Faye Dyer

As Braden whisks young Cassidy to his family's secluded country estate, both can sense their undeniable attraction. But Cassidy soon learns that they can never satisfy their mutual passion; Braden has already betrothed her to another. Her only hope of claiming the one man she'll always love is to unravel the dark and lustful secrets of his past--.

1 out of 5 stars I was surprised at how horrible this book was.......2007-08-19

Based on the 41/2 star rating on this book, I decided to give it a try-- and found myself utterly disappointed. The heroine passed the point of naivety and sailed right into blatant stupidity. Throughout the first half of the book the feeling of complete annoyance made me want to reach inside of the pages of the book and hit this character. The ages are never clearly stated (although there is a reference to black and grayish hair in the male), but it was as if a 50 yr old had married a 14 yr old in intelligence levels. Sad and disgusting. I was unable to find myself liking either character. The male being an obtuse, controlling jerk who drives his siblings away because he has been imprisoning them for the "Cause"-- and the female mentally challenged with random Spanish words thrown into every other sentence at the beginning of the book to her perfectly ENGLISH cousins--

I'm getting irritated just writing this review. The book was full of utter fluff and completely unlikeable characters. I have definitely been turned off from this author, and have no plans of ever reading anything by her again.

3 out of 5 stars touch of the wolf.......2007-01-10

have not got into this series at all, still a good book but at times abit slow

4 out of 5 stars Excellent take on werewolves.......2005-05-13

For the most part, I really enjoyed this book. Krinard makes werewolves real and serves up emotional tension with a backhoe. Braden is a complex hero, and not always heroic, but he recognizes his errors and grows as a character. Cassidy remains somewhat innocent throughout the book, but that's part of what appeals to Braden; plus, the hurt and betrayal that strike at her innocence are beautifully rendered, making the reader hurt, too. Her need to be belong is palpable. You can feel the heightened tension when the werewolves are together and challenging each other. There are moments when the book falters (for example, Bredan's fall into his grandfather's outlook and behavior is never fully explained), but it serves as a thorough introduction to the Forster family. The love scenes are the weakest part, and Krinard's euphemisms are so laughable as to almost be more uncomfortable than crass words. Sometimes the exposition is too long or slow, but once the action begins, it moves with good speed.

        3 out of 5 stars Brain Candy.......2005-04-28

This book was brain candy. It was well paced and just interesting enough to keep you going, but didn't require any effort to read. There were weak moments and moments of serious eye rolling (the over use of poetic quotes for example became tedious and lost impact). The character, Braden, the male lead was well done. He was the best developed and the only really developed character in the book. His handicap was a bit of a twist right off the bat. It was slid in so easily that I found myself stopping and going, "What? He's what?" and flipping back a few pages to review. The weaknesses she "tells" us about in Braden, would have been better "shown." But still he is the most interesting of the characters in this book. The female lead, Cassidy Holt, is over the top naive and innocent... and sorry, but no girl from the old west who hearded cattle and worked a ranch is this innocent and naive.

The biggest complaint in this is that it is the pinnacle scenes for a romance novel (nudge, nudge) that fall absolutely flat. The romantic tension is done well as it builds, but during the culminating moment, the writer's cliched and even down right silly analogies and vocabulary pulled me out of the moment and hand me giggling. One can use petals as a simile as in "soft as a petal," but one should never use "petals" as a euphemism for a body part. It is simply silly.

All in all it's a nice pleasant read. A nice curl on the couch with a cup of tea or coffee and forget about the outside world book.

2 out of 5 stars I'm in the Minority Here ... The Story Didn't Work for Me.......2004-12-24

TOUCH OF THE WOLF is a pedestrian effort. The story - about an American werewolf who goes to England to find her family - is choppy, with holes here and there in the plot, quotes way too much poetry, and is cast with characters who aren't that interesting. The heroine, Cassidy, is not very endearing - she's irritatingly naïve (my eyeballs are rolling right now) and is way too desperate to find love. She also fixates on Braden right from the start, though I don't know why exactly, other than he is the first werewolf she meets. I thought Braden was more flushed out a character than Cassidy or his two siblings. His handicap was promising, though there seemed to be a lot of moments in the book where, superhuman senses aside, the author seemed to forget he WAS handicapped. The story also seemed to suffer from moody melodrama and a need to make a secret out of EVERYTHING. I understand that TOUCH OF THE WOLF is the first of a trilogy, the other two books following the stories of Braden's siblings (an annoying ice queen named Rowena and a cowardly trickster named Quentin). I'm not quite sure I want to bother with their stories. The reason I read TOUCH OF THE WOLF is because I adored TO CATCH A WOLF, which is about Cassidy's brother, Morgan. I'm pretty disappointed that Cassidy's story was so dopey. Oh well.

Update as of Jan 4, 2005: I just read a young adult novel called BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE that dealt with many of the same topics as TOUCH OF THE WOLF, including real-life issues such as fitting in, dealing with the loss of family, etc., as well as werewolf issues like determining the leader of the pack and the rules associated with breeding/mating. I have to say the teen book, BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE, was a lot more sophisticated than TOUCH OF THE WOLF in every respect and was a much more engaging read. BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE was shorter and set in modern times with a angst-filled heroine and, while it didn't have the full-blown love scenes found in a romance novel, it had a sexually-tense love triangle that was fun and exciting to read about.

        5 out of 5 stars Shadowmen 1.......2007-09-13

An excellent paranormal read - a real page turner. The author has created a tightly consistent world/mythology for her series - filled with interesting characters and exciting events. A keeper!

5 out of 5 stars My first romantic novel read.......2007-06-13

I'm a cynical person by nature. Like anyone, I've seen thousands of romance novels with Fabio on the cover lining supermarket shelves throughout the years. I never expected to pick up a romance novel and actually begin reading one, let alone read half of it in one sitting!

"Touch A Dark Wolf" is most definitely different from the kind of 'romance novel' I was expecting, with a firm anchor in plot and character, the romance and sexuality accenting it instead of trying to carry it. St. Giles has a great way of entwining the story with the romance, instead of feeling like you're reading out-of-place sexual situations for the sole purpose of having such in the book.

As I said before, I read half of the book in one sitting! And from someone who, first off, has never read a categorized romance novel before; and secondly, grew up not liking to read, that is saying something! I would in fact recommend this book to my fantasy-reading brothers (hoping they could get past the idea of reading a 'romance novel') as an intriguing and intricate fantasy, and a great otherworldly read.

Some reviewers labeled this nothing more than a Gerard Butler fanfic, which I find extremely odd. Though there were a few possible references to the Scottish actor, if you aren't "looking" for them, it's doubtful they will detour you. The physical description of Jared actually caused me to picture a character different from Butler, as many of the characteristics weren't shared between the actor and the book's principle male character. I compliment St. Giles on the character of Jared, who lived and breathed on his own, as did Erin, the story's principle female hero.

Wonderful, intriguing read, waiting for the release of its sequel!

        1 out of 5 stars What was I thinking?.......2007-04-15

If you like sappy rediculous romance novels - you may like this. I should have known better just by looking at the cover. I stopped reading it after the first chapter. My book club gave this book a good rating but they just want to sell more books.

        3 out of 5 stars Touch a Dark Wolf.......2007-02-26

Not as bad as some reviewers said, but I admit it does need some work. The book begins when the herione is run off the road when two wolves have it out on the hood of her car. I know, it sounds interesting, but the author mucks it up at this point. I suppose St. Giles is attempting to give her novel an epic touch by switching scenes from villian to hero to watchers. She moves from one point of view to another. A master writer can do this successfully, but St. Giles only ends up confusing the reader. I read through about six chapters before I felt I had a vague understanding to what was going on. She should have stuck with one point of view and let the reader discover what was going on along with that character. If it wouldn't have been for this confusing point of view stratagy she adapted, I think it would have been a good book. Or at least much more enjoyable.

This book is HOT...that's all I'm going to say. I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. I'll have to read this one again first though!

You are drawn into the most intense and emotional understanding of the main characters, Damien and Jenna.

Both had lost one they loved intensely. Damien had lost his wife and almost his sanity. Jenna had lost her child and then her marriage.

How these two emotionally scarred people made connections with each other and Jenna draws Damien back into the light of human connection and introduces him to her family and fights for him is truly amazing.

This is one story you will find hard to put down as the action keeps moving without any bed stops to confused the issue. But when the connection is made physically - Wow! Both learn from the other about love.

With Emily the connecting force between Damien and Jenna, their emotions run riot and end up healing them. Smokey, the wolf was an added attraction. With a little bit of wisdom in understanding the only way to keep something is to let it go.

MOST EXCELLENT story - great characters, even sceptic, Frank Novacek.

HIGHLY REOCMMENDED --M You will probably want to read this one over again.

              5 out of 5 stars :).......2001-12-25

Jenna Lawrence was desperate to find her niece who had been kidnaped. Against her families pleas Jenna went to the one man that she knew could help her, Damien Reese. Damien lived alone in an isolated cabin and has had no human contact for more than five years. Damien is a psychic, or telepathic, and he used his gift in the past to help others until it became too much and he withdrew from others completely. All Damien has to do is touch someone to feel their emotions, but he pays an emotional and physical toll afterwards. The price he pays became too much, not to mention the way everyone treated him like a freak or a monster. Jenna, on the other hand, would not go away and she was willing to pay any price for Damien to help her find her niece. Damien wanted one night in Jenna's arms in exchange for his priceless gift. Jenna could not refuse what Damien asked of her. Jenna finds herself connecting with Damien as the days go by. She also sees the price that he has to pay for his gift.

I did not think that I would like this book because of the psychic storyline, but I found myself intrigued with the gift that Damien had. Damien's gift brings out the vulnerable and emotional side of him that is usually hidden behind his tough guy image. The man has a wolf for a pet for heaven sakes (although he does not consider smokey a pet). The reader can really connect with Jenna and the sense of guilt that she has for what she is putting Damien through. You also can understand why she would do it again if that is what it took for her to get her niece back. The reader can also understand why he asks for one night of passion in return for his services. In some stories his actions would be considered crude, but not in this story. Damien feels he has to deny himself the one thing that most of us take for granted, human touch. To my surprise, I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.
