Following the huge success of White Oleander, where Janet Fitch portrayed the coming-of-age of Astrid, a young girl placed in foster care after her mother murders a former lover and goes to prison for life, she has once again created an indelible portrait of a young woman in Paint it Black. Josie Tyrell is a teenage runaway, an artist's model, and an habitué of the '80s LA punk rock scene. She is a white trash escapee from Bakersfield, having left a going nowhere life there. Now, sex, drugs and rock n' roll inform her days and nights. Paint it Black is the perfect title choice because Josie's lover is never coming back, as the song says.

Josie meets Michael Faraday, son of concert pianist Meredith Loewy and writer Calvin Faraday, long divorced. He is everything that she is not: refined, wealthy, well-traveled, brilliant by fits and starts. He is also a Harvard dropout, leaving school so he can paint; his new obsession. He refuses help from his mother, who is furious about his decision to leave school, but it doesn't bother him to have Josie working three jobs to support them. He is given to black moods, frozen in amber by his perfectionism, contemptuous of those who do not agree with him about art and life. Josie adores him. One day much like any other, he leaves their house, saying that he is going to his mother's so that he can paint in solitude. Instead, he goes to a motel in 29 Palms and shoots himself in the head.

What follows is days of watching Josie in a near fugue state from grief, drugs, booze, and going over and over her love for Michael, trying to grasp how he could do what he did. After all, didn't they share the "true world," Michael's characterization of their cocoon of love and exclusivity?

Meredith calls her and says, "Why are you alive? What is the excuse for Josie Tyrell? I ask you." Ultimately, they form a tenuous relationship, because all that is left of Michael lives in the two women. Josie even lives with Meredith for a while. When Meredith is ready to go on tour again, she asks Josie to go to Europe with her. Before she can do that, she must go to 29 Palms and try to understand, finally, why Michael's depression pushed him over the edge. That puzzle is not solved, nor can it be, but the end of the story is a hopeful, upbeat, new beginning. Janet Fitch has beaten the curse of the sophomore slump with this dynamite second novel. --Valerie Ryan

1 out of 5 stars An overly annoying story........2007-10-04

After about 100 pages, it gets really old dealing with Josie Tyrell. She is just so... annoying. That goes for her dead boyfriend as well.

I suppose the point is that we all deal with our own inner pains in our own ways, but Jeez!

I love the author's use of very poetic prose, but I sometimes get a pretentious feel from her. As if she wants us to know that she is writing harsh, edgy literary fiction, and she is willing to throw in lots of sex just to prove it.

The ending has an overly bright, although a nicely vague, ending. Unfortunately you have to wade through a lot of dull everyday wierdness to get to it.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as White Oleander.......2007-09-05

It is not as good as her first book White Oleander. I highly recomend White Oleander

5 out of 5 stars Painted Black, but . . ........2007-08-31

I've waited 5 years for White Oleander author Janet Fitch's next book, but when I read the description of Paint It Black--a triangle of a young female protagonist (Josie Tyrell), a powerful older woman (Meredith Loewy), and action driven by the death of the man in the triangle (Michael Faraday, Meredith's son)--basically the formulae of White Oleander, I was ready to be disappointed. But the similarly stops at that broad generalization, and Janet Fitch does not disappoint. Josie, a trail park refugee from Bakersfield, now a punker artists' model in LA, meets Michael Faraday, the genius son of world famous concert pianist Meredith Loewy, and falls in love. He loves her as well, but can't escape the pervasive influence of his domineering mother, except through suicide. As Josie and Meredith struggle to understand Michael's death, their lives become intertwined. Through the struggle of this unlikely couple, the sophisticate and worldly mother and the "white trash" punk, the multi-layered and paradoxical character of Michael is revealed.

The characters of Paint It Black are all sparsely rendered, but the book is not so much about them as it is about the space Michael creates by his suicide. Interestingly, while Michael is the dead engine that drives this story, he is also the most realized character. Meredith is clear enough, but she is also a foil, driving Michael to suicide, with Josie becoming trapped in her imperious orbit as a result. And if Josie seems incomplete, it's intentional, "her idiocy, so enormous, its gravity field alone would crush anything for light-years around."

Fitch indeed paints it black, but Michael had loved Josie and had tried to show her "the true world", a world of simple beauty--a heron beside the river at dawn. It is a world that he himself lost sight of, but the darkest ugliness cannot exist without beauty, and Josie finds a glimmer of this beauty by passing through the blackness created by Michael's death. I've read a number of reviews that compare Paint It Black negatively to White Oleander, but I find the comparison unfair, since despite their similarities, the two works are simply too different, revealing Fitch to be a talented and versatile writer. I hope I don't have to wait until 2015 for her next book, but if that's what it takes to produce something comparable, the wait will have been worth it.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding novel, unique experience.......2007-08-30

I was not a big fan of "white oleander" but this novel, "paint it black" made Janet Fitch one of my favourite authors. I reccomend this to everyone who knows what it is like to live with the ghosts from your past and a love lost.

4 out of 5 stars Black beginning, pale ending.......2007-08-22

I read Janet Fitch's first novel, "White Oleander", years ago, and remember being impressed by how Fitch's writing sparkled. She's wordy without being rambling, and she has the enviable ability to create characters that you not only care about, but are pretty damn sure you've met in some previous life.

"Paint It Black" is the story of Josie Tyrell, a Debbie Harry lookalike who's a core part of the Echo Park's underground music / art scene of the early 1980s. She's a street-smart, cynical artists' model whose world comes crashing down when her former-rich-kid-turned-artist boyfriend commits suicide in a seedy hotel room. She's left asking why and what- why he died and what she's going to do with her now shattered life.

It's a dark book, but I enjoyed it because I've always had an affinity for the outlaw artist who lives on the fringe, who personifies that line from the Joplin song about freedom being another word for nothing left to lose.

An excerpt:

"...But to satisfy Michael, everything had to be absolutely original, better than anything ever before, paintings or poems or music. She had always believed that knowledge helped you do things, but Michael's knowing just took away his courage, his freedom.

'My mother always said, 'There's no place in the world for a good concert pianist,' he said. 'There are too many geniuses.'

"At least if you were ignorant, you could do what you wanted, you had no idea what had been achieved in the past. You were free, instead of chewed at by bleeding impotence, dissolved away like a pearl in acid.

"She looked again at the girl in Michael's seat. Every term, there would be a new student in that chair by the window, someone who hadn't known that Michael Faraday once sat there and fell in love with a model named Josie Tyrell. With whom he should never have shared a sentence."

If Janet Fitch had kept this raw and vivid tone up throughout the entire book, I would have given it five stars. But the end was tepid when compared with the sensual shock that sent the story out of the starting gate. "Paint It Black" is akin to a cup of steaming black coffee: hot and strong to begin with, but weaker and lukewarm at the last drop.

A good choice for those who want to add a little flair, depth, and sophistication to their interior painting and decorating efforts, Black & Decker: The Complete Guide to Painting and Decorating will encourage you to do more than just slap on some paint. After flipping through the pages and seeing more than 700 color photos, you will want to play with paint, experiment with it, and control it. The first section of the book--Color & Decorating Principles--explains color theory as well as the use of colors and patterns to create moods in a room. (Warm colors, for example, help make north-facing rooms more inviting, and the people in them warmer.) The second section of the book--Basic Painting & Wallcovering --explains the process of preparing surfaces for finish paint, choosing the right materials, and estimating quantities. (This portion also notes how small patterns help make close spaces seem larger and more open, while large patterns are stimulating and look best in active areas such as a child's room or a large kitchen.) The book's final section--Advanced Painting & Decorating--looks at how to embellish walls and floors with faux designs and decorative accents, and how to add elegant touches with wallcovering cutouts, cornices, and wall frame moldings. Specialty painting tools are also discussed, including paint gloves for contoured surfaces such as pipe and wrought-iron, bendable paint pads for window shutters and cast-iron radiators, and mixer bits. Knowing that some of the designs and color combinations may spur people to wilder-than-normal decisions, the authors wisely advise that people first get samples of their preferred wallcoverings or paints, and then take them home and subject them to the 24-hour test, checking from time to time over the course of a full day to see how the colors change under varying lighting situations. --John Russell

Book Description

Home decorating will never be the same. Close your curtains! Throw away your summery linens! Forget about those white eyelet pillow covers! And for Goth's sake, buy some black lights! Voltaire is here to help you with your home decorating dilemmas, guide you through the hardware stores and decorating centers (which are so difficult for Goths to navigate), and lay it all out on the line about which shade of black goes with which shade of black. Who knows?! One day soon he might have his own decorating line at a discount store. In this world of pastels and plaids, it's so hard for Goths to find anything aesthetically appealing. You go in search of Edward Gorey and wind up with an eyeful of Eddie Bauer. With Voltaire's Paint It Black you can turn the unbearably mundane into the delightfully macabre with little more than a touch of creativity and a can of black spray paint.

5 out of 5 stars Like Martha Stewart, only better and not a career criminal.......2007-09-20

A friend of mine let me borrow this book. I am amazed that I gave it back without crying like a baby. From spooky dolls to bottle candle holders to a Gothic wedding, this is the perfect starter guide for the do it yourself goth. Or, if nothing else, it is a good laugh and an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and beautiful book, but ideas are very basic.......2007-09-03

If you're a fan of Voltaire's brand of snarky humor, you'll enjoy this book on gothic homemaking. The design of the book is worth the price on its own; the black-white-and-red color scheme and black pages are sleek and lovely. My only "complaint" (and it's not really a complaint so much as an observation) is that quite a few of the ideas are very basic and straightforward, and could be found online for free. (Examples: hanging cloth on your walls instead of painting; turning boring dolls into demon dolls.) But, there are a lot of really cool and inventive ideas with complete and helpful instructions, such as the "goth box" shelves, picture frames, and the graveyard cake (which looks as delicious as it does spooky). Voltaire also gets points for including specific recommendations for where to find some of the materials, such as car decals for "pimping your ride." These details turn what could have been rather bland ideas into truly helpful ones. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who's just getting started with gothic decorating, wants a few new ideas, or just enjoys Voltaire's signature humor.

5 out of 5 stars paint it black.......2007-04-11

Very fun read,Voltaire's second book. Alot of great and creative ideas on how to goth out your home. And as always, very funny observations by Voltaire. Highly reccommend for Voltaire fans and goth fans.

5 out of 5 stars cute little book.......2007-02-20

This book would've served me well in my Goth period but alas even Goths must sometimes grow up. Though I've since passed this book on it was a delightful little read and only Voltaire could've pulled it off.

5 out of 5 stars Nice day for a BLACK wedding!!!!.......2006-11-09

I found his chapter on gothic weddings the most amusing, although some of it seemed too far out for me. His book was throughly entertaining to read has a artist and one of the darker-fashion inclined crowd. :) I reccomend this book because it's ideas are practical, inexpensive, and leave lots of room for the gothic imagination!!! 3 out of 5 stars Paint it Slow!.......2006-02-09

I have read three previous Louis Kincaid novels and have found them to be cutting edge. This one lacks that quality. After his ordeal in Michigan, Louis is asked to come to Florida by a friend to investigate the murder of an African American man. As he investigates, more murders in like fashion occur. As Louis searches for the murderer, he is joined by a rookie F.B.I. forensic psychologist. Territory disputes and the requisite tension between investigators ensue. The ending is a ho-hum conclusion to a ho-hum novel.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to like........2003-05-24

In "Paint It Black" Florida author P.J. Parrish brings protagonist Louis Kincaid to Soreno Key in the Sunshine State.

Louis Kincaid's former cop boss has hooked Louis up with a local lawyer for some investigative work.

His attempt to clear his client of murder leads to a search for a serial killer.

Louis and the Soreno Key PD work well together and are joined by a feisty, rookie FBI profiler. This alliance is further strengthened as they attempt to prevent an incompetent county sheriff from botching the investigation.

This is an efficient police procedural filled with nifty twists and turns. I bit on enough of the subtle red herrings to remain in doubt until the conclusion.

"Paint It Black" is nominated for this year's Anthony Award in the Paper Back Original category. Well deserved!

This is a smart series with a strong lead character; solid secondary characters and now set in Southwest Florida.

I look forward to the further adventures of Louis Kincaid.

In Paint it Black, we once again catch up with Louis Kincaid, this time he's in Florida hunting a vicious serial killer who murders black men in a violent, ritualistic fashion. Louis must overcome the demons in his past, as well as those in his police chief's in order to hunt the killer down.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2002-05-24

P.J. Parrish continues to entertain with her police procedurals featuring Louis Kincaid. The pace was good, the story was good, and the suspense was great. I highly recommend.

Though it is better than most, I found this to be one of those books that is somewhat useful once, then you never open it again. It tries to do too much and doesn't do anything particularly well. I was looking for more of a detailed how-to type book with nuts-and-bolts tips. There is some of that, but the pictures only convey so much and there's not enough detail or explanation in the text. The book spends a lot of time covering colors and decorating, but specialty decorating books and magazines are probably better for that purpose. I suppose it's worth a loan from the library.

Scott Ciencin and Shaun Thomas get together again to drag the SH franchise even deeper into the comic mud.

To call this comic a cathartic sketchbook of Shaun's imaginative pornography would be giving it too much credit. Confused? Here's the storyline...

A starving artist who specializes in "dark art" finds himself kicked out of his house and on the street. In his wanderings, he finds Silent Hill, where the monsters inside stop to pose for him while they're killing the other outsiders so that artist can paint them. He's cool with this, so he decides to stay in town.

A year later (?) a busload of cheerleader clones (lead by a girl named "Cheryl") invade the town and start redecorating his pad in pink. The standard SH monsters invade and take away some of the girls while the others throw the artist in a locked closet and dress up like the soldiers from "Aliens" (spouting quotes from said movie left-and-right).

Things slide even further downhill from there.

Once again, I'm not sure if Scott Ciencin really has a grip on telling a coherent Silent Hill story, or maybe comic books just aren't his style. Either way, his poor writing, teamed with Shaun's lack of visual storytelling talent has hit a new low with this chapter of the SH franchise.

This is a must have for any owner of a home built in Fauquier county in the 18th or early 19th century. It is also appealing to general historians and residents of the county and of Virginia.

While I was disappointed that my 150 year old home was not listed or its carpenter discussed (he was after all a Yankee transplant after the war between the states) the historical information was fascinating and is a very good reference for both County history and Architecture.

        Setting: contemporary Montana and Texas
        Sensuality: 7

Cat Calder is grief stricken when her young fiancé is killed in a car accident. Emotionally devastated and vulnerable, Cat's final evening in town--meant to be spent with close college friends--ends instead in the arms of a handsome, gray-eyed stranger. Nine months later, Cat gives birth to a healthy baby boy and raises him in the protective bosom of her powerful family; everything changes the day a lawman--with arresting gray eyes--arrives in Blue Moon, Montana. Logan Echohawk has never forgotten that night or the beautiful stranger, and it only takes one long look at the boy to know that the brief, passionate encounter had created a child.

While Cat struggles to come to grips with Logan's appearance, an enemy's long-smoldering thirst for revenge flares to life, threatening Logan, Cat, and their beloved son. Will Logan's training as a lawman be enough to save his family? And even if everyone survives, will Cat have the courage to chance her heart and love again?

The newest installment in Janet Dailey's much loved Calder family saga, Calder Pride possesses both complex characters and a compelling plot line--one infused with a suspense element that Dailey conveys as effortlessly as the essence of a Montana ranching community that will charm the reader throughout. Intelligent and strong, Cat is well balanced by Logan, who is her equal, whether they're riding horses, roping cattle, battling bad guys, or making love. Fans who fell in love with earlier Calder novels will be delighted with this latest chapter in the family chronicle. --Lois Faye Dyer

        Book Description

The Long-Awaited Addition to the Beloved Calder Series from the Queen of the Western Romance!

Cat is a Calder, through and through: proud, headstrong, intelligent, and beautiful. When her fiance is accidentally killed, she vows never to love again. But one reckless night with a handsome, gray-eyed stranger changes everything, giving her a son with striking gray eyes.

Deciding to raise the baby on the Triple C Ranch, Cat thinks she's finally got life under control—until the new sheriff, Logan Echohawk, arrives in town. He's a ruggedly handsome man with striking gray eyes...

The harder Cat tries to ignore Logan the more she finds herself torn between her promise to her first love and powerful, unexpected feelings for her child's father. With the whole Calder clan standing firmly behind her, and her son's future in her hands, Cat must decide: Will she keep her heart safe or take a chance on a new, true love?

2 out of 5 stars For those of you who indulge in cowboy fantasies.......2005-02-26

This novel is great for those warm summer nights where you want to just sit back to a good old western novel. Having grown up near Montana this was an interesting read about western men in boot, horses, spurs, and all that ranch stuff. Maybe being an adult Easterner had me wondering how old fashioned this book was with all its mentioning of silver honcho belts, etc. I just don't buy that physical love is all that. Plus all the references to cattle runs, beef, and shotguns just made me cringe. Maybe it is my Sex and The City generation, but this romance is all about lawmen, horses, and a foolish young girl's one night stand in Texas resulting in an illegitimate child. The scenes of her ostracism for being an unwed mother despite her powerful family and the shotgun marriage five years later is way too backwards redneck. Every love scene of romantic tension between Cat and Logan seem more like estrogen and testosterone overload than "love". If you like men who believe in dominating women with old world rules, then read Calder Pride. Otherwise, indulge in Luanne Rice and Anita Shreve for some serious deep literary romance.

I have read all of the Calder series. I have liked all of them.
I hope Janet Dailey finishes the series. She left some un-answered questions. I have all the Calder books so far.

5 out of 5 stars I am the biggest fan ever!.......2001-09-25

All of the Calder books intice me! I never read any book clear through until I read "This Calder Sky" the first Calder book! I have every Calder book. Once I start reading these books I literaly never want to put them down! I have not found any Calder book that did not completely capture my attention! I wish this set would continue on forever! I do not want to have to try to find other books to read, because no book can compare to the Calder books! I am fifteen years old and my mom got me started reading these books! That is the best thing my mom has ever done for me! There are no words to explain how happy I get reading these books.

2 out of 5 stars The Calder Saga very Missed.......2001-08-28

I just recently read the previous 4 in this series and enjoyed them very much. Maybe I expected too much of the last one because of this, but I felt that this book left out much of the plot of the previous books. Along with the feel of Montana and the Calder Range, it left out alot of the topics that I followed thru the previous storylines and I missed them. Janet Daily tells wonderful stories, though, and I hope to see more of them from this series someday.

        1 out of 5 stars Lost Interest.......2001-06-27

Sorry...but after Maggie's character died in the last Calder installment...I lost interest. I think I cried for about two days after I read "Calder Born, Calder Bred" ---but then again, I was only 16. NEway...I skimmed through "Calder Pride" this afternoon in the library but I just couldn't bring myself to read about Maggie's family going on without her. It just didn't seem right, somehow. I keep hoping that Janet Dailey will come out with one final Calder book that will bring Chase and Maggie back together again. Only in my dreams, I suppose.
