5 out of 5 stars Practical Applications.......2007-05-08

This book is great at mapping out pain and explaining how to extinguish trigger points through direct pressure and stretching exercises. A must have for any bodyworker.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-11-11

As a Bodyworker, this is a fabulous book. It has helped not only myself, but my clients have benefited greatly as well. It is an easy read and can be of great help to the layman.

2 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible.......2004-11-30

I tried to find specific conditions in the book - and the procedures to follow for treating them. I couldn't even figure out the procedures to follow when reading them - the writing just isn't very clear.

If there is any organization to this book, I couldn't detect it. The author is very enthusiastic about the material and gives lots of her experiences with her patients. That's nice, but judicious editing, better organization and clarity is what this book needs.

3 out of 5 stars Requires two people.......2002-07-20

I was very interested in this book based on the reviews. I was able to look at it at the library before buying it. To my surprise, almost everything in the book requires two people. The book is more like an instruction book for a physical therapist. If you are looking for a book that you can use by yourself, I highly recommend The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies.

3 out of 5 stars Avid Reader.......2002-04-29

A clear and concise book with understandable information that can be put to practical use.

Book Description

ow in paperback, this provocative tale within a tale details the life of avant-garde novelist and college professor Thelonious 'Monk' Ellison. Monk, frustrated with his dismal book sales, composes a fierce parody of exploitative ghetto literature entitled My Pafology, which is greeted by critics as the work of a great new voice and garners him the success that he covets. Monk's impending struggle with his moral principles emerges as a revolutionary and riotous indictment of race and publishing in America.

1 out of 5 stars Mary Sue's got a new pair of shoes.......2007-04-07

Have you ever heard the term "Mary Sue?" It comes from fanfiction. It refers to a non-canon character -- a character who doesn't come from the already existing fictional world -- who acts as an author surrogate in the story. And not just any author surrogate, either. A Mary Sue is an act of wish-fulfillment on the part of the author. A Mary Sue is an expression of everything the author wishes s/he was in real life. Stuff just works out for a Mary Sue in ways it doesn't for the rest of us.

In my estimation, Percival Everett is the premier purveyor of the Mary Sue phenomenon outside of fanfiction. In Erasure (and American Desert, and Glyph...) the narrator enacts what seems to me particularly adolescent revenge fantasies of the frustrated intellectual Everett. The narrator (I've already forgotten his name, like it matters) delivers a largely incoherent ("Oh, but it's not!" the defenders already shout. Yeah, yeah, save it for the comments at the end, okay?) paper that, evidently, gets the goat of his starchy academic nemeses. And the narrator gets to keep his cool as the kingpin frothingly quotes Pynchon at him afterward.

And the narrator -- no really -- uses his wits to best a raging redneck at a diner. And the narrator gets to stick it to the literary establishment that's overlooked his doubtless brilliant other books, slurping up a piece of pop dreck he whips off in an evening. Never mind, of course, that the narrator of that pop dreck is a more nuanced and sympathetic character than the narrator ever manages to be himself.

But all this is ironic, you say! Well, I say, maybe it is. It's also a singularly unsatisfying reading experience, not to mention a singularly smarmy and embarrassing one too. I have no doubt that Everett felt better about himself after writing this. Probably as good as I feel after masturbating. But you don't want to read about that, do you?

5 out of 5 stars An amazing work of literary criticism.......2007-01-08

I have got to think that Everett cringed when the New York Times Book Review praised his book as having addressed "the highly charged issue of being 'black enough' in America." As Monk says in the beginning of his story, race out of context is an empty concept, as is gender.

Throughout this book Everett spoke directly to me (a fairly old, white woman) as if the he were my alter ego. Several decades ago, I was enrolled in a seminar in American Literature as part of a post-graduate program. I was looking forward to Melville, Twain and Hurston, but no, the idiot professor was all heated up over the pretentious and impenetrable ramblings of Roland Barthes, so we had to crawl through "S/Z" practically line by line. Later, as I understood, English Literature departments at large universities sort of evaporated as they abandoned art in pursuit of gaseous theories.

Everett's initial parody of the lit. crits was, therefore, fun for me, although I wonder how many other readers have had to suffer through "S/Z." Anyway, that is just a comic introduction to a comment on the entire spectrum of contemporary literature in the context of a sophisticated understanding of critical theory. It is a satire of the contemporary literaty scene worthy of Alexander Pope.

5 out of 5 stars Monk Who?.......2006-07-26

Let me preface this review by stating that I was "forced" to read this book in an American Literature Survey course. I am so glad that I was introduced to Everett's work. As many of the reviews of this book point out there is definite racial tension in the novel. However, it was not the friction created by Everett's criticism of the "stereotypical" black American that i found most interesting in this novel.

At its core, Erasure is a novel dealing with identity, or the lack thereof in today's world. Everett's numerous allusions to Ellison's The Invisible Man are only arrows, roadmarkers along the way to gear your mind towards thinking about Monk's identitiy.

I will not spoil the end of the novel for you, which by the way is a cataclysmic gathering of all of the loose ends, but I will say that Everett's style is engaging to even the most amature literary critic. And, if you feel up to it, the novel makes good leisure reading as well.

Keep your mind open while reading this contemporary masterpiece. Be sure not to miss Everett's wit, sarcasm, and criticism. And, pay special attention to the changes that occur in and around Monk (the novel's main character); allow yourself to ponder your own identity as Monk sheds his own.

2 out of 5 stars two books in one.......2006-05-23

Percival spends the first 1/4 of the book telling you how dreadful Da Ghetto literature is, then makes you READ some for the next 1/4 of the book. That may be a clever conceit, and maybe it would work in smaller doses, but for me it was a major turn-off and I almost stopped reading, I certainly skipped a fair bit of it .... I suppose if you are more familiar with the genre then the parody is more obvious. It certainly did not strike me as "blisteringly funny". Maybe the echoes of other literature might also work for some, as mentioned in other reviews, but it didn't work for me. The rest of the book, and the protaganist's dilemma struck me as more entertaining and mildy funny.

The only other novel I've read which is written in a black-vernacular is Color Purple. Is Alice Walker one of the writers that he is mocking? It was to find an answer to that question that I have come on-line today. I appreciate that this in not a discussion board, but does anyone know where I can find out more on this issue?

5 out of 5 stars American Cynical Genius.......2006-05-04

Honest and direct, are the two words best fit to describe Everett's Monk character. He struggles with so many things including his writing career, his relationship with his brother and sister, and his ailing mother. This truth-telling story shows the real feelings people face when it's their turn to step up to responsibility as seen in Monk's novel (which is cleverly included within Everett's). We all wonder when it's our time to be the hero or if we should let someone else step up. This book is witty and maniacally hilarious, as Everett strips the layer of racism and ignorance in this country down to bare bones--all in an effort to reveal complexities that only a few of us can unravel. Job well done!!

5 out of 5 stars One I won't forget.......2002-11-08

I read this book while waiting for delivery of the more well-known book `City of Quartz' by Mike Davis. I am glad I read this one first. It is a well-documented and scholarly book, yet full of passion and feeling about the City of the Angels. It focuses almost exclusively on `Downtown', whereas Davis's book ranges more widely.

I was left in no doubt about Klein's feeling for that part of LA - he lives in Anegelino Heights - the first suburb just north of Downtown. Klein brings to life through personal anecdote the vitality and multiculturalism (and problems) of his, and other neighbourhoods.

You get to boo and hiss at the villains who have alienated greater LA from its Downtown, but you also get a sense of Klein's affection, and sense of hope for the city.Davis's view is much bleaker and perhaps nihilistic - he rails against the racism upon which LA is foundered, and upon which the powerful thrive, but I note in passing that he lives in the uppermiddle class enclave of Pasadena. Klein, on the other hand (at least at the time of writing) remains part of the inner urban fabric of the city. I get the feeling that Klein is a supporter of urban renewal, whereas Davis views it as another alienating con on the part of City Hall.

I agree with a previous reviewer that the novella within the book doesn't quite work. I think it contains the seeds of a good story in another genre, but is misplaced here. One problem may be the attempt to speak in a voice for which he has respect, but which is not his.

If you are interested in all things LA, film and fictive noir, the great upheavals and crises of a city such as the Rodney King affair and the LAPD, apocalyptic LA, and more - all of which penetrate the consciousness of many way way beyond the city (through globalised media, which is part of the fabric of LA) , then you will be enthralled by this book. Read it alongside Davis, by all means, but don't neglect it in favour of Davis!

If you like discussion of film and fiction set in LA, there is lots in this book to ponder.

Note: Klein cites Davis in his work. I have not seen Klein cited in any work of Davis (understandable in City of Quartz, which predates Klein's work, but he also does not appear in the index for Davis's later work Ecology of Fear - which at the time of writing this I have not yet read)

4 out of 5 stars Klein provides an essential vocabulary for understanding LA........1999-04-14

The the text is full of concepts that put LA into historical and theoretical perspective. The only part of this book that doesn't shine is the middle chapter, seven, where Klein attempts a novel set in LA. This should have stayed in his notebook.

Academic yet accessible, The History of Forgetting gives readers an essential vocabulary through which they can filter their understanding of LA.

"Social imaginary," "trace," "simultaneous distraction," and other ideas help reinforce the central idea that LA exists as a series of what the subtitle calls "erasure(s)."

I'm using this book with my college class, and while they occasionally struggle, they've gained a sense of power in their ability to take the ideas Klein puts forth and use them to interpret fiction set in LA.

The text is more compelling that Mike Davis's latest, book, and certainly of interest to anyone who studies popular culture or contemporary literature.

4 out of 5 stars Almost City of Quartz.......1998-03-28

The History of Forgetting is among the best of the newly bourgeoning genre of LA urban history and theory. Much of the information within is presented in an engaging, if leftist style. This book fits well alongside Mike Davis' landmark City of Quartz, though it's rather self indulgent chapter of fiction (written from the point of view of a Vietnamese immigrant), is tiresome and ultimately incongruous with Klein's apparent desire to expose the rewriting of LA's various histories. A strong, if flawed book.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, darker, darkest.......1997-11-15

If you love L.A. don't read this book. If you don't want people to come here -- have them read it. This book was really a good read and made me realize why I used to dream of fires and floods about this city. It can really give you nightmares and make you a little sad that this city is indeed void of soul. Why though? Why? It's in a prime location, has lots of promise, etc., but just can't equal up to other great cities. Maybe because it just tears down things over and over again? If this city becomes like Blade Runner I'm a'leavin' for sure. Yet, when I look at the palm fronds glisten in the sun and the ocean waves sparkle against a vivid blue sky, I feel as if my heart is stuck here. Los Angeles is like an orphan who gets shuttled around. "...Forgetting" is a haunting expose' that left me blue so I had to rent a gut-splitting comedy (filmed elsewhere USA) from my neighborhood video store which used to be four other stores before that one. But of course I don't know what they used to be since all signs of former tenants have been erased.

Book Description

Invisible Lives is the first scholarly study of transgendered people—cross-dressers, drag queens and transsexuals—and their everyday lives.

Through combined theoretical and empirical study, Viviane K. Namaste argues that transgendered people are not so much produced by medicine or psychiatry as they are erased, or made invisible, in a variety of institutional and cultural settings. Namaste begins her work by analyzing two theoretical perspectives on transgendered people—queer theory and the social sciences—displaying how neither of these has adequately addressed the issues most relevant to sex change: everything from employment to health care to identity papers. Namaste then examines some of the rhetorical and semiotic inscriptions of transgendered figures in culture, including studies of early punk and glam rock subcultures, to illustrate how the effacement of transgendered people is organized in different cultural sites. Invisible Lives concludes with new research on some of the day-to-day concerns of transgendered people, offering case studies in violence, health care, gender identity clinics, and the law.

4 out of 5 stars A Study of the Social Conditions of TG People in N. America.......2002-02-07

First, this is one of the few volumes I've read where the situation of transgenderists/transsexuals in Canada is explored with a certain depth. The third part of the book (Research) is invaluable.

Thanks to Dr. Namaste, we have an overview of the situation of TG/TS people with respect to:

Violence: Chapter 6, Genderbashing, focuses on the situation of TG sex-workers in Montréal and how they're related to the gay communities by the police -basically, how they are erased from view in statistics and studies;

Access to government programs in Canada: Chapter 7, Access Denied, deals with the policies of the GIC of the Clark Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto -how in the screening process and help system the input of the TS hirself is ignored (only three GIC clinics in Canada can recommend a person for government-sponsored SRS: in Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver);

Treatment of TS/TG people in these clinics: Chapter 8, Clinical Research or Community Health? -this chapter mainly delves into the way GICs are seen by the people receiving or who have received services at them at some point, in this sense it is a first;

The bureaucracy trap and how it influences care: Chapter 9, The Administration of Erasure -again centred on HIV/AIDS as a problem among TG sex workers in Québec, although the difficulties in dealing with the system are also explored.

Overall, this book is a must for any serious researcher and transsexuals/transgenderists living in Canada. The theories in the book itself (after all, Dr. Namaste is a semiotist with training in sociology) come across as rather vague and not well-founded on the research presented, in my opinion. Even so, it is a good starting point for future research.

A note: I found quite upsetting the statistics of "gaybashing" as directed to TG people. It seems that people attack others not on the basis of their sexual preferences as much as they do for their perceived gender identity. I.e., a gay male who acts masculine is less likely to be attacked than a male-to-female transgenderists who is attracted to women. That you give the "wrong" public image is what irks bigots the most. And even worse in the case of TG/TS visible minorities enaged in the sex trade:

"At one meeting I attended, residents discussed various strategies that could be employed to evict sex workers from the area. One man stood up and spoke about his plan to take a baseball bat and assault two Haitian transgendered prostitutes, known to work on the corner of Ontario and Panet Streets. Like many perpetrators of queer-bashing who target black gay men as easy victims, this attacker viewed black transgendered women as those least likely to retaliate and most worthy of assault. Notwithstanding the fact that such violence occurs within the gay village, it cannot be explained as an instance of homophobia. Rather, this proposed assault emphasizes the importance of accounting for gender, race, class, and public space in an analysis of violence." [Invisible lives, p. 154.]

Dr. Namaste had also found that gay males "of colour" are more likely to be attacked within the "gay villages" (20% vs. 9% for Caucasians). Since TG/TS males are perceived as "gay" so far they don't pass, for TG visible minorities it's like having three strikes against: colored, gay and transgendered.

People belonging to minority ethnic groups are also much less likely to go to the police -the worst horror stories of police abuse in this book are told by visible minorities, in one case a Native TS woman who was not a prostitute: "People like you should be killed at birth." [p. 169.] If after being the object of attack by a group of bigots, you are going to be attacked by the police, then what's the point of calling them?

This is one of the very few books that at least explores in part what it means to be TG and coloured in a sexist/racist society like Canada.

3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Reaction.......2001-09-06

Namaste's main thesis -- that transsexuals are produced through systems of erasure -- is intriguing, and she does a fairly good job of arguing for it, especially in the final "Research" section of the book. Namaste also does a good job of showing how the Canadian trans scene is importantly different from that in the U.S. Unfortunately, Namaste has a tendency to misrepresent other authors, she falsely represents transsexuals as if we all agreed with one another when it suits her purposes, she over-simplifies in describing queer theory and social sciences, her writing is repetitive at places, and she often jumps to unwarranted conclusions. Still, anyone with a serious interest in transgender studies should read this book.

    Book Description

The fear of oblivion obsessed medieval and early modern Europe. Stone, wood, cloth, parchment, and paper all provided media onto which writing was inscribed as a way to ward off loss. And the task was not easy in a world in which writing could be destroyed, manuscripts lost, or books menaced with destruction. Paradoxically, the successful spread of printing posed another danger, that an uncontrollable proliferation of textual materials, of matter without order or limit, might allow useless texts to multiply and smother thought. Not everything written was destined for the archives; indeed, much was written on surfaces that allowed one to write, erase, then write again.

InInscription and Erasure, Roger Chartier seeks to demonstrate how the tension between these two concerns played out in the imaginative works of their times. Chartier examines how authors transformed the material realities of writing and publication into an aesthetic resource exploited for poetic, dramatic, or narrative ends. The process that gave form to writing in its various modes--public or private, ephemeral or permanent--thus became the very material of literary invention. Chartier's chapters follow a thread of reading and interpretation that takes us from the twelfth-century French poet Baudri of Bourgueil, sketching out his poems on wax tablets before they are committed to parchment, through Cervantes in the seventeenth century, who places a "book of memory" in which poems and letters are to be recopied in the path of his fictional Don Quixote.

This volume brings together two collections of poetry, the previously published Progress (published to critical acclaim in 1985) and Under Erasure, a new work by one of the major figures of the San Francisco "Language" poetry scene of the 1970s and 1980s. "Progress in writing politics," wrote Andrew Ross of the first work. This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A887353. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A new real beam interferometric processing technique, called Adaptive Clutter Erasure (ACE), is investigated for applicability to ground clutter suppression in airborne radar systems. By analysis and simulation, the viability of the ACE concept as a next generation clutter suppression technique is demonstrated to achieve performance enhancements commensurate with currently implemented techniques. Research results indicate the ACE concept provides a reliably consistent 10dB Signal-to-Clutter Ratio (SCR) advantage over the APG- 63, an operational radar system used for baseline comparison. ACE system concept development and performance predictions are conducted in conformity with the physical and operational design parameters of the APG-63, namely the operating frequency band, typical tracking scenarios, aperture size and polarization, element spacing and weighting, and field pattern response. Performance degradations for the limited number of scenarios where ACE provides minimal or no advantage, i.e., scenarios including platform roll or large target depression angles, are "as expected" in the sense that simulation results are consistent with theoretically established principles.

At the start of every chapter in this charming Regency title are lines from English folk songs. And like these songs, the romance between Mallory Edwards and John Barron is at times quaint, humorous, ironic, touching, and heroic. Mallory's family has always owned Craige Castle, so when financial circumstances require that Mallory marry to keep the Castle in the family, she does so out of duty. Young and inexperienced, she is willing to take her mother's advice about relationships. When her new husband abandons her on their wedding night she makes peace with her new and lonely life until John's debts force Mallory and her mother out of their family home. Seven years after her wedding night, Mallory goes in search of her husband, and finds he has much more to offer than financial stability.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Romantic Historical.......2006-07-21

After the death of her father, Lady Mallory is forced to marry John Barron in order to keep her beloved home Castle Craig. John Barron, is disgusted with his father's schemes to control his life. After the wedding, John escapes Castle Craig and England for a life in the military, leaving behind his young bride to tend to their home. He is guilt ridden that they both have been used as pawns in their family's games and thinks that leaving her is the best plan. Seven years later, John is forced to return from the continent after his fathers death and take up his new position of Viscount. He lives it up in London with gambling and mistresses, all the while his wife is barely eeking by at Castle Craig -unbeknownst to him because he believes that she is well kept with the money he has alloted. Mallory decides enough is enough when she is booted out of her beloved Castle for unpaid debts -her husbands. She seeks him out in London demanding her Castle back and an divorce. John is shocked to meet the fiery beauty. Things go from bad to worse when he learns that his uncle has been mounting debts in his name and has recently disappeared with all his money. Anne and John go on into hiding, posing as steward and his wife, in hopes that the uncle will surface believing his nephew has left the country.

In hiding, Mallory and John fall in love.

The story is absolutely beautiful in the way John tries to redeem himself for leaving Mallory all those years ago. She's reluctant at first, but he lays *siege* and is determined to win her heart. It's very heart warming to see the hero pursue his lady. Very romantic with lots of ~sigh~ scenes. This one's a shelf keeper, definitely makes the heart flutter.

If you liked this one, You and Only You by Maxwell is also terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Love Is So Grand.......2002-05-30

Lady Mallory and John Barron had no say in their arranged marriage. He was given a nights notice and Mallory was given about a day - all was arranged and two strangers met the wedding night. The wedding night was not to be remembered by Mallory, other than her humiliation that her groom left and would be gone for 7 long years.
Having been forced from Craige Castle for unpaid bills, she went in search of her errant husband with the sole purpose of gaining a divorce. She had heard that he had returned from the continent's wars and was whooping it up in London.

What follows is an absolutely lovely romantic story of love, trust and redemption. I thoroughly enjoyed the attempts of John to woo back his wife and finding himself falling in love with the woman that was once the girl he had left behind. It was so terribly sweet and so romantic. I did not find it boring at all ... This was truly a very touching love story and showed the growth and maturity of the two individuals who learned to overcome obstacles and find themselves to be friends who rather liked one another and then found that once in a lifetime....lasts forever kind of love! Great story!

              4 out of 5 stars It wasn't the best I've ever read..........2000-08-05

"Falling in Love Again" was not a bad book. In fact, I found I was enjoying it some of the time. I thought the characters had a good deal of potential, and with a bit of tweaking, the story could have been five stars.

The problem I found, was that I was growing bored. I felt the plot wasn't anything new, and the heroine didn't really strike me as stubborn and fierce (though the hero seemed to think so), instead she seemed a bit obnoxious, and I really couldn't see what was so wonderful about her. Another thing I disliked was how they were supposed to be looking for someone, but they spent the entire time on a farm "mucking out the stalls." So the plot slowed down there.

While this book isn't the greatest thing I've ever read, but it was fairly enjoyable. I would recommend not to buy it, but perhaps check it out at a library for a quick, non-heavy read.

5 out of 5 stars Falling in Love Again was an excellent book........1999-03-20

I really enjoyed the depth of the characters and felt that I knew them well by the end of the book. The plot didn't ever become "thin" and held my interest throughout the story. There was a hot magnetism between the two main characters; they couldn't stay away from one another even though Mallory did her very best to resist her husband. I enjoyed reading about the "harvest home" and felt that the author not only researched it well but wove it into the plot in a well thought out manner. Readers will fall in love with Falling in Love Again.

I can highly recommend Dr. Morris' book "Falling in Love Again" as a valuable tool and helpful guide for older women who are seeking personal fulfillment and companionship in later life. As a gerontologist and an older woman myself, I appreciate the author's careful assessment of the labyrinth awaiting those who are interested in re-entering the uncertain world of dating relationships with older men. In this delightful and well researched book the author provides the reader with carefully documented guidelines in the search for companionship and includes humorous and poignant case histories that illustrate the joys and pitfalls this search can entail. But this book is not only about the search for love in our mature years. I particularly enjoyed her insightful advice about personal enrichment and how a rich and meaningful life in the last half of our lives is not necessarily dependent on finding a significant other. But for those who are engaged in this search, this book is an invaluable resource.

4 out of 5 stars strong relationship drama.......2007-10-08

In Deepwater Cove, Charlie and Esther Moore celebrate fifty years of a strong marriage. The couple love and as important respect one another. In fact many townsfolk see their relationship as the model for couples to emulate.

However, when Esther suffers an accident, the ideal relationship begins to feel strain as Charlie resents the pressure put on him to care for his beloved wife while Esther hates his pandering. A worse blow to their marriage is finding a very personal sketch of Esther engraved with a loving message that did not come from Charlie. In the fall of their lives, is the five decades old marriage between the Charlie and Esther heading to divorce court?

The fall of the Four Seasons of Marriage series (see IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING and SUMMER BREEZE) is an enjoyable look at a couple whose marriage has seemed perfect to outsiders for five decades, but in their golden years has issues for all to see. The story line continues to use fiction to provide readers on ways to maintain a strong relationship regardless of how much time together has past. Catherine Palmer and Gary Chapman continue to provide a deep look at couples who have overcome trials and tribulation by FALLING FOR YOU AGAIN and again and again.
