3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Expected.......2007-09-03

As I read throught the story I kept expecting something to happen. Well it didn't. It wasn't all that I expected it to be. Don't get me wrong, the story was very well written and the characters well liked but there wasn't that spark that draws you in. At least there wasn't for me. Others might find it more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars revisit well-loved characters from previous Welfonder books.......2007-07-21

Robbie MacKenzie is the only son and heir of Duncan MacKenzie, the Black Stag of Kintail. After a ten-year absence, he's on his way home to Eilean Crag Castle where he's expected to marry his betrothed, Euphemia MacLeod. His betrothal is not a love match. She's the daughter of the Laird of a neighboring clan. His marriage is meant to form an alliance so that the two clans can live in peace.

Juliana MacKay has made a deathbed promise to her mother. She is supposed to repay Duncan MacKenzie for all the support he's given her mother. While Juliana is not happy with this edict, she obeys her mother and leaves her side to deliver the funds and a missive to Duncan.

Robbie MacKenzie finds Juliana MacKay standing waist deep in a black-watered lochan from where she'd rescued a sheep. In the rescue, she received a blow to the head by the ewe's flailing hooves and was now in need of help herself. Robbie rescued her unconscious body from the water and in the process loses his heart to the flame-haired lass. He vows that he will have her for his very own. But there is still the matter of his betrothed. Will he be able to extricate himself from his father's promises? Juliana's suffering a memory loss due to the blow to her head, but she knows she's no light-skirt, that she was on a mission to repay somebody for her mother, and a name, Kenneth. She has no idea who she is, but she's not about to trust this knight with lust in his eyes. She's definitely not thrilled with him forcing her to accompany him on his journey to his home. She doesn't remember why she doesn't wish to visit Eilean Creag Castle or even why the MacKenzie name disturbs her, but Robbie isn't giving her much of a choice.

ONLY FOR A KNIGHT gives Sue-Ellen Welfonder's readers an opportunity to revisit well-loved characters from earlier books. Robbie is the hero's little boy from DEVIL IN A KILT. The various conflicts kept me glued to the pages through the entire book and then none of them turned out the way I would have expected. All of the characters are larger than life and just as wonderful to read about this time around, as they were in previous books. I was fascinated with Juliana's brother, Kenneth. He wasn't actually in the book until the end but he was talked about a lot. His story can be found in UNTIL THE KNIGHT COMES.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not great.......2007-01-25

Toward the end two major dilemmas were resolved too quickly and easily. I felt the author was in a hurry to finish the book and didn't want to take the time to show interactions with others, twists and turns, etc . In one case a 3rd party comes up and asks for something which solves a problem. In another case, someone touches a jar and has a vision which solves a problem. Other than that, it was an ok book, some interesting ideas, but not great.

3 out of 5 stars Not Welfonder's Best.......2006-09-01

I have read all of her other books except Master of the Highlands and found this one to be my least favorite. There just wasn't ever a moment when the main characters weren't going to get together. Robbie's bride-to-be, the main problem just disappears! Her character did not seem like the type to just run off with her lover after ranting through out the rest of the book on how she is going to destroy Robbie. Love Welfonder's other books, this one just didn't live up to my expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Now This Is Romance!!!.......2006-06-09

Juliana Mackay reluctantly makes a deathbed promise to her mother...she will travel to Eilean Creag Castle and repay the Black Stag laird, Duncan MacKenzie even though she doesn't think he deserves their hard earned siller and she doubts that anything she does will change her opinion of the man she loathes. This promise is going to change Juliana's life in ways she never imagined.

Robbie MacKenzie is returning home after an extended absence. It is time that he marry his betrothed who comes from a rival clan. When he comes upon a lass in danger of drowning...he jumps in and rescues her. He's not expecting to find her attractive or desire her as he has no other. Will he do the honorable thing and marry his betrothed or will he let passion sweep him away?

Now this is a romance! Robbie is without a doubt one of my all time favorite hero's and the attraction that burns between him and Juliana is scorching. As a result this is a very sensual read...not because of the sexual content...but because of the passion Ms. Welfonder has managed to pour into these two characters. Juliana is a perfect complement to her knight. Ms. Welfonder will draw you into her make believe word from page one...and entertain you for the balance of the read. If you are looking for a strong romance look no further!

3 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-03-09

Although I gave it three stars, I actually really recommend it. I got it as a graduation gift in 2003 and found it very helpful -- mostly for the making friends and living on a budget sections (I had a car and a job). I found the car information helpful too -- I was a 21-year-old girl who didn't know a thing about buying tires or rotating them or taking care of a car. When I finished it, I passed it on to my friend who graduated in 2004. It wasn't boring (and I get bored with those helpy, advice books).

4 out of 5 stars I Liked it..........2005-12-13

I got a few of these types of books for Graduation and this one was by far the best...The author gave you good info without overwhelming you with the details. I liked it a lot and am actually planning on giving it to some of my younger friends.

2 out of 5 stars ALL THE 5 STAR REVIEWS ARE MADE IN THE SAME 2 WEEKS!.......2005-11-20

This is a books whose rating are most certainly pumped up by many optimisitc reviews giving 4 or 5 stars in the same 2 week timeframe. It really isn't as good as other books in this area. Look up other 'after college' books.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected..........2005-08-09

I recently graduated from college and thought this book might give me some insight and help me with making a smooth transition from college life to the "real world." The reviews I read about this book were all highly positive so I figured it had to be decent. I paid 75 cents for this book plus 2.50 for shipping. It wasn't worth it. There is some but very little useful information in this book and it is written from a woman's point of view. When the author does actually give useful information it is very brief and goes into little detail. I would say that 90 percent of the content of this book is useless. I have no idea what all of the good reviews for this book are talking about. Save yourself the trouble and try a different book.

2 out of 5 stars MEDIOCRE AT BEST.......2004-06-28

Well, it's an OK book, but not earth shaking.

I, too saw the USA Today review and picked up the book for a graduating relative. I read it before giving it to him and found it lightly amusing with decent information. 'Mediocre' describes it best.

What I find odd is that nearly every single review on here has similar verbage with the same number of stars.

Of course, authors would never post fake reviews to pump up their Amazon ratings. But it is strange that such an average book would have such stellar reviews with no dissention.

I'm just sayin'.

Good luck.

4 out of 5 stars Now For Something Rather Different..........2005-09-06

For those who have read "Knight Life," "One Knight Only" will definitely come as something of a surprise. It's a much more serious novel for perhaps much more serious times. That's not to say that there isn't still much of the same sort of humor that readers have seen in "Knight Life" and other Peter David stories, but on the whole, this is a much more weighty book.

I'll admit, it took me a while to get used to the more serious tone of this story, but once I did, it turned out to really be pretty good. In the original "Knight Life," Arthur Penn became mayor of New York. In this story, he's since moved up in the political arena --- way up --- and has now become President of the United States. It's been quite a journey and there have been losses along the way too --- Merlin, for one, turned to stone by Miss Basil, whom he was no longer able to control. Arthur is also now faced with the growing threat of top terrorist leader Arnim Sandoval, who will soon make things personal. But all of this may be nothing compared to the very legendary individual that Arthur will soon be facing.

If you liked "Knight Life," I'd say give "One Knight Only" a try. It may not quite match the amazing standard of writing set by Peter David in that first story, but it's still good.

2 out of 5 stars One Knight Only -NOT a good sequel........2005-07-04

I enjoyed the first book,(Knight Life) and was eager to read this one. It was a definite disappointment. I kept looking for more story after it had stopped- I can't say finished, because "finish" implies an ending and a resolution and neither of these were included in the book I read. Did Mr. David just get tired and quit writing? Did the publisher leave out some of the book? I don't know, but I'm VERY glad I borrowed it from the library before buying it.

2 out of 5 stars Sequel is lacking.......2005-05-02

Personally I found this sequel to be a far cry from the enthralling tale that was Knight Life. The narrative jumps around and it seems that David tries to hard to incorporate several other mythological literature heroes into the tale.
The result is a storyline that doesn't flow and has no clear objective. I found myself struggling just to finish the book.
Definitely a disappointment from the witty tales we are used to from this author.

4 out of 5 stars Sacrifice and Loyalty.......2003-10-07

One Knight Only is the second novel in the King Arthur series, following Knight Life. In the previous volume, Arthur Pendragon has foiled the plotting of Morgan Le Fay, has become the Mayor of New York City, and has married the current incarnation of Guinevere. Life is good, but circumstances soon change.

In this novel, Arthur has moved up the political ladder to become President of the United States. Now he has gained another mortal enemy in a powerful terrorist, Merlin is transformed into a statue of stone (never irritate a basilisk), and an assassin has shot Gwen in the head. She is dying slowly and Arthur is far beyond distraught. Then Percival brings news of a possible way to cure Gwen.

Hidden in the Skeleton Keys offshore of Peru is a fabulous place ruled by an immortal High King. Percy suspects that the island is one of the forms of the Holy Grail. If they can get Gwen to the island so that she can drink from the Grail, she will be cured of her wound.

This novel brings together the famous king of the Britons with someone even more legendary: Gilgamesh, the original knight errant. It is a tale of immortality, loyalty, power, and compassion. In a way, it addresses the problems of terrorism and sworn enemies.

Arthur finds it hard to adapt his ancient principles to the demands of the presidency, almost running afoul of the Peter Principle, but pulling through with a little help from his friends. As usual, his very much out of date viewpoint shows some attributes of modern society in an unusual way, but he manages to adapt and learn and the country is the better for it.

In some respects, this novel is not as good as his first novel (in either the original or revised form). Some of the freshness and glamour has worn off the plot, but there are still some very funny one-liners and situations as Arthur confronts the illogical and irrational in current affairs.

Highly recommended for David fans and anyone else who would enjoy a story combining tales of the country bumpkin coming to town with elements of the return of the king.

4 out of 5 stars Arthur's 21st Century Story Continues...........2003-08-12

Arthur: "If I have need of you, I shall summon you...how? Through mystic incantation? A crystal ball of some kind you will give me?"
Basiliskos: "Arthur...don't be an .... This is the twenty-first century... Contact me in that manner."

"One Knight Only" is the recently published sequel to "Knight Life", Peter David's very first novel. In "Knight Life" Peter constructed a tale in which Arthur, having returned to life to run for mayor of modern-day New York City, must not only deal with modern politics in order to reclaim his mantle as a leader, but with a beautiful woman named Gwen who looks impossibly like the queen he loved 1500 years ago, a backwards-aged Merlin, and old enemies from his past that will do anything to destroy his political future. In "One Knight Only", we see Arthur as President of the United States, dealing with terrorism, assassination attempts, the loss of loved ones, conniving journalists looking for a scoop, and a mysterious, powerful King who holds a powerful weapon that Arthur desperately needs.

I will say that I found it jarring that Peter suddenly jumped ahead to the middle of Arthur's Presidency without making this material into a novel of its own to tell us how Arthur did this, instead relying on flashbacks and exposition, but I suppose he felt he covered that type of election story with the first novel, and didn't want to rehash himself. We find out that the U.S., having recently signed a treaty with a country named Trans-Sabal (which will be familiar to readers of Peter David's stint on Marvel Comics' "X-Factor"), has been dealing with the terrorism of a man named Arnim Sandoval, and after a vicious assassination attempt strikes home at Arthur's White House, Arthur, without Merlin or Percival at his side to advise him, must not only deal with the tragedy of the act, but with a country convinced that Trans-Sabal was behind the act, and clamoring for blood.

It is here that Peter uses Arthur's response as the President to terrorism on U.S. soil as a way of exploring what should be done when a President has a personal stake in going after a dangerous terrorist, and one wonders just how much of what he puts in here he put because it just made a good story, and how much of it is his own commentary on what he thinks about the terrorism policy of the current real-life occupant of the Oval Office. Arthur does seem to take a greater back seat to other characters in the story compared with the first novel, not necessarily because he got less page time, but more because he seems more reactive than pro-active in the story, with most of his actions being responses to attacks, bargains, or blackmails by other characters. Nonetheless, the story is entertaining and faithful to not only the source material as the last novel was, but also to other stories in ancient mythology, which those familiar with such stories will enjoy. Miss Basil is given an expanded role in this novel, as is Percival, and Percival's own quest, which leads him into a confrontation with an arrogant and terrifyingly powerful enemy, is brought together with the Arthur storyline in a gigantic climax that will send shockwaves ...literally.

At 373 pages, it's only 30 pages longer than "Knight Life", and Peter expertly weaves drama, ancient fantasy, political philosophy and his trademark humor (which only rarely becomes annoyingly contrived in the book) into a very entertaining fantasy tale. I did find the ending a tad bit abrupt, leaving an important question unanswered about one of the main characters, and Peter David's statement that a third book is not a definite thing made me wonder if this point slipped his mind, but it was still an entertaining read, and hopefully there will be a third book that answers it. Bottom line, if you like Peter David, and you liked "Knight Life," go pick up "One Knight Only."

Fantastic!!! WOW! What a great treasure for fans of the "Treasure State'
I was hoping that the letter "M" would have more to do with the various "M's" on Montana college campuses, but Myrna Loy is also one of my favorite classic Hollywood stars.
Can't wait to read it to my daughter!

... Ms. Rustand has written a generous, exciting romance with believable characters you can't help caring about. A reader looking for an emotional, satisfying novel with which to while away an autumn evening won't do better than A MONTANA FAMILY, regardless of which state is on the cover.

5 out of 5 stars Tangled relationships -- Very highly recommended.......2001-09-11

It took sixteen years for Dr Jolie Maxell to move back to Paradise Corners, Montana. Her family's appeal to move closer and the death of a patient caused her to reevaluate her priorities and stimulated the change of location. As she watched her patient Wendell Hill die with no money but a plethora of mourners, Jolie had realized there would be few to mourn her if she passed. Such a realization caused her to seek her family, despite the many years of troubling relationships. What she found was animosity on the part of her hometown, suspicion and rumors abounding. Her brother's in huge trouble and her father's trying to ignore a serious heart condition. She also found the dream she thought would never be hers.

Building contractor Matt Dawson came to Paradise Corners seeking relief from a questionable Chicago neighborhood for his children. Four years ago his wife passed away from cancer. She'd been his love, his inspiration and his dream come true, and her passing left both him and the children bereft. Having had one beautiful relationship, Matt doesn't expect another to come his way, although the children could really use a mother. But when his daughter becomes ill, Matt finds himself relying on Jolie for more than just medical care.

A multi layered plot lends A MONTANTA FAMILY by Roxanne Rustand complexity and charm. The secondary characters, including a sheep guarding llama and puppy afraid of dust bunnies, bring a bit of humor to a tale filled with deep, intense emotion. The secondary human characters neatly tie the novel to the other parts of the miniseries without bogging down the pace of the plot, allowing the novel to read well as a stand alone, or part of more complex work. Further, the hero and heroine are well-balanced, believable characters living with ordinary challenges and extraordinary circumstances. The hero's daughter's diabetes also lends realism, both propelling the plot and creating an interesting secondary plot line. Very highly recommended.

When he brought Bobby Maxwell home in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm, Deputy Rafe Rafferty never considered the chain of events he might set into motion in small town Paradise Corners, Montana. Bobby's father Robert Maxwell practically owns the town as well as the state's political appointees and law enforcement personal. Further, Bobby's sister Thea Maxwell quickly captures Rafe's heart.

Thea can out castrate, out rope and out work virtually any cowboy in Montana. But at twenty-nine, after a disillusioning experience with the governor's son, she remains single. She loves the ranch, and if she had been a son, would have inherited it. Instead, her brother Bobby stands to inherit, even though he feels as though the land and his father suffocate him. She gives Rafe her heart, but when he has to arrest her brother, Thea finds herself caught between love and loyalty.

The Big Sky Country miniseries kicks off with MARRIED IN MONTANA by Lynette Kent. This fast paced, spirited novel creates tremendous tension as the heroine struggles between family loyalty and the man she loves. The hero likewise struggles to follow the law, even though he knows his decision pushes the woman he loves away. Further, the secondary characters add tremendous depth and interest, not only introducing further installments, but also strengthening this fascinating tale. MARRIED IN MONTANA comes very highly recommended...
