5 out of 5 stars Pure raw life.......2007-09-02

I read the original when it first came out, and did not think it could be improved upon. But the added chapters made a great book even better. What's it about? Hard to say in a few sentences, so just think of a lesson in pure raw life, then read it. If you liked Love Medicine, you'd probably enjoy: Neighbors

5 out of 5 stars One of the best writers in American History.......2007-09-01

Simply fantastic. It is a shame though, that she is not included in the canon of literary geniuses of American history. Her stories read beautifully and her artistic ability to paint a picture with words is amazing. Read all her books, they are all wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-08-04

This book is a classic, a truly great book. It reads like interlaced short stories. Two Native American families: Kashpaws and Nanapush. Lazarres and Morrissey French blood mixed in. The characters are exquisitely drawn. The story is tragic, bewildering, full of hate, overarched with love. This book will make you anxious, scared, sad and guilty. You'll be rooting for these people. The writing is surreal, sorcery, naked truth, poetry. What a book!

5 out of 5 stars Love Medicine Heals the Heart.......2007-03-23

In Louise Erdrich's novel "Love Medicine," the reader is introduced to a rich and varied cast of native americans living on a Chippewa Reservation in the Dakotas. The novel is basically an inter-connected set of short stories, all of which deal with the trials and tribulations of the Kashpaw family,a well respected, well-connected family. The running theme is the way we all deal with life, death, and every mountain and hurdle in between. The central characters all learn the best way to cope with nearly any situation is to rely on the heart, to let love heal the wounds of the soul. Erdrich paints her characters in colors that are extremely believable and heartbreakingly true to the human form. At any rate, she certainly didn't deserve the critiscm that Leslie Silko slapped on her. If you are looking for examples of "noble savages" fighting the corrupting influences of the evil, outside world, then, reader, you should look somewere else. Erdrich's work has none of the high-minded, self-righteousness that Silko spouts from every page. In a sense, Erdrich's story is more real, warmer, and infinetly more enjoyable than Silko's.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughts about book and reviews.......2007-03-22

About a month ago, I returned to this book after well over a decade. It meant a lot to me when I first read it, and it means a lot to me now. Most writers can point to a book that so inspired them, they made the impractical and too often demoralizing decision to become a writer; so it was with Love Medicine and me. Erdrich is the kind of master of language and of the art of perception and voice that one can never hope to match, with phrases and lines and microstructures so graceful a reader can find herself sprawled out in some other consciousness, having slid right through them. I was surprised to see the negative review listed below by J.V., so I looked at that reviewer's other reviews. Mostly she reviews games. Games have heroes and villains. They have protagonists and antagonists. These are the stuff of fantasy. Fantasy is wonderful...for those who don't believe life itself is beautiful enough, in all of its horror and complexity, to spend any serious time in. This book deserves careful readers, and obviously has done well to turn away anyone looking for a simplistic moral to the story (we have fables to take on that role) or characters who serve as symbols and dichotomies (we have relgious extremists and pop psychologists and the like to give use plenty o' this) or stereotypes of the "Noble Savage" (made-for-TV movies and cultural panderers may wear this crown), and has instead won an enduring audience who will always recognize Erdrich as among the top voices of English-language literature. Erdrich is an artful, intelligent, subtle woman who can make you feel some degree compassion for anyone, however flawed and from any background, and real compassion is much needed in this rather cruel and crude, if compelling and lovely, world of ours.

Book Description

When Pipe Bearer, the young shaman of the Elk-Dog people dreams of a powerful spirit-horse--one bearing distinctive, hat-like markings on its head and ears--he knows he is being sent an important message. But he cannot interpret its meaning. Soon after, a colt is born bearing the exact markings he dreamed about and he is directed to undertake a long quest to the lands of the Pawnee and Lakota in order to learn the meaning of this event. Disguised as traders, he and his wife, Otter Woman, will encounter many wonders and not a few dangers before they discover the meaning of the colt with the Medicine Hat.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Refeshing and unique.......1997-07-16

Holy man Pipe Bearer, a member of the southern people, starts having visions of a special horse that seems to be wearing a medicine hat on his head. When the special horse with the medicine hat top is born, Pipe Bearer realizes that he has a quest to accomplish. He does not know where he must go or what his mission is. He tosses the stones and learns that he must head north with medicine hat horse accompanying him. His wife Otter Woman joins him on his quest. They travel north under the guise of being traders, the only group of people who can safely journey among the various tribes.

For the first few days of their trek, nothing eventful occurs though they meet many people. Things dramatically change when an out of control prairie fire occurs. Pipe Bearer and Otter Woman manage to save themselves and help another couple fleeing the fire, Lone Walker and his wife Plum Flower. The foursome becomes friends and travels together in search of completing the unknown quest, knowing that more adventure awaits them before their journey is completed.

MEDICINE HAT is an exciting, insightful novel whose authenticity will thrill fans of Indian tales and historical fiction. The characters (primary and secondary) seem to be so life like and the trip so genuine, readers will believe they are along for the ride. This novel is not an action-packed, save the world thriller. Instead Don Coldsmith has painted a brilliant and charming story of Indian mysticism during the nineteenth century.

Book Description

Jane Austen has been thought of as a novelist of manners whose work discreetly avoids discussing the physical. John Wiltshire shows, on the contrary, how important are bodies and faces, illness and health, in the novels, from complainers and invalids such as Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Woodhouse, to the frail, debilitated Fanny Price, the vulnerable Jane Fairfax and the "picture of health," Emma. The book draws on modern theories of the body, and on eighteenth-century medical sources, to give a fresh and controversial reading of familiar texts.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Thank You Mr Wiltshire!.......2000-05-16

This is a book primarily for scholars of Jane Austen but it does contain material that is interesting for readers who wish to learn more about Jane Austen's novels, in particular the way she deals with the issue of illness. John Wiltshire makes some very interesting points about Louisa Musgrove's fall at Lyme in Persuasion. He understands it to be a crucial moment for Captain Wentworth's future as a husband: will it be Louisa bold and brash or will it be Anne sensible and faithful? He has much to say on Marianne Dashwood's illness in Sense and Sensibilit, in regard to her relationship with Willoughby, which is most helpful in understanding why her character alters so significantly at the end of the novel. Being a previous student of John Wiltshire's, I was pleased to come upon this book and relate it back to his class. I gained some very helpful hints in understanding Jane Austen's incredible insight into human nature from this book and I hope that many more will find it as worthwhile.

      Book Description

Love's Madness makes an important new contribution to the interdisciplinary study of insanity. Focusing on the figure of the love-mad woman, Helen Small presents a significant reassessment of the ways in which British medical writers and novelists of the nineteenth century thought about madness, about femininity, and about narrative convention. At the centre of the book are studies of novels by Jane Austen, Sir Walter Scott, Charlotte Bronte, Wilkie Collins, and Charles Dickens, but Small also brings out the historical and literary interest of hitherto neglected writings by Charles Maturin, Lady Caroline Lamb, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and others. Stories about women who go mad when they lose their lovers were extraordinarily popular during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, attracting novelists, poets, dramatists, musicians, painters, and sculptors. The representative figure of madness ceased to be the madman in chains and became instead the woman whose insanity was an extension of her female condition. Love's Madness traces the fortunes of love-mad women in fiction and in medicine between about 1800 and 1865. In literary terms, these dates demarcate the period between the decline of sentimentalism and the emergence of sensation fiction. In medical terms, they mark out a key stage in the history of insanity, beginning with major reform initiatives and ending with the establishment in 1865 of the Medico-Psychological Association. This original and highly readable study challenges previous assumptions about the relationship between medicine and the novel. A major addition to nineteenth-century studies, it will be of interest to students and scholars of literature, feminism, social history, and the history of medicine.

5 out of 5 stars A momentous, sweeping, and emotional novel.......2004-06-12

The sequel to "Promise & Honor", and the second volume of a riveting trilogy, Honor & Glory continues author Kim Murphy's Civil War saga. Set in the aftermath of the battle of Fredericksburg, two armies wait for the spring campaign on the Rappahannock River banks. Two sisters are drawn into the war, their loyalties split - one betrothed to a Union major, while the other cannot forgive the Northern army that levelled her home. A momentous, sweeping, and emotional novel.

5 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at its finest.......2004-01-22

Kim Murphy's second Civil War novel, HONOR & GLORY, takes a roller coaster ride of a journey through smuggling, war prisons, battle wounds, sickness, childbirth, and other tests of endurance--while at the same time depicting the joys and hopes of both Northerners and Southerners who lived and loved during the turbulent time period.

The novel opens after the bloody Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 and focuses on two Virginian sisters, Amanda and Alice, the former of whom has experienced both widowhood and a new marriage since the war's start. Alice, the younger sister, finds difficulty in accepting her new brother-in-law's background and position in the war--and falls for a former love interest of Amanda's. Despite the familial tension, the two women's relationship grows stronger as they themselves gain strength, shedding Victorian morals and delicacies to do their part in helping ailing soldiers...and to protect their own lives and properties as the war stretches to 1865.

Each central character experiences dark depths of anguish at some point in the novel, yet Murphy also portrays supreme moments of joy that help them persevere and rise above their physical and/or emotional pain. Alice especially stands out as an exceptional character, transforming from a frivolous young lady to a multilayered, heroic woman. And the novel offers one of the most heart-stopping escape scenes ever written.

Either read with its predecessor, PROMISE & HONOR, or standing alone, HONOR & GLORY is an entertaining and emotional example of historical fiction at its finest.

It isn't long before the unlikely foursome forge a bond strong enough to stand up not only against Dory's brothers but against other, more sinister forces as well. Dorothy Garlock has long been one of America's favorite storytellers. In Sins of Summer, she delivers the emotional, heartwarming romance that her fans know and love. --Maudeen Wachsmith

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Garlock Is A Storyteller!.......2006-03-14

Dysfunctional family! Long before this phrase was widely used and accepted such families existed. Families who were unable to deal adequately with one another; households who could not behave in a normal and productive manner. In SINS OF SUMMER, Dorothy Garlock throws the dysfunctional family idea firmly into her reader's face and forces the examination of emotional distress.

With each passing day, Miss Dory Callahan grew lonelier and more impatient. She wondered if there was more to life than just existing from day to day. She questioned the life she was giving her daughter. Her toddler was growing in a house filled with hate. Dory's two half-brothers were mean-spirited and troubled. A small child needed more; a small child needed love and understanding. When Ben Waller arrived, Dory saw leniency, kindness, and remarkable strength. Ben Waller's daughter was indeed fortunate and Dory wanted the same for her daughter. By the same token, Dory wanted the same for herself!

A man could spend a lifetime and never meet the right woman. Little by little, Dory Callahan and her little redheaded daughter were seeping slowly into his heart. Something in him had awakened - something no other woman had ever aroused. Dory's compassion, her understanding, and her courage had reached deep inside him. Ben Waller always thought love and a home were for other men. Now as he glanced at the small Callahan child, with terrified eyes, Ben suddenly realized he would give his life for her . . . and for her mother.

Dorothy Garlock writes a story in such a way one could almost believe they were there. In SINS OF SUMMER, Garlock explores the wildness of frontier America, a time when the lumbering trade ruled the vigorous northwest. Here Ms. Garlock paints a remarkable story with her enthusiastic pen and her outstanding style, and consequently the reader feels and believes wholeheartedly.

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story.......2004-04-03

I cannot give this book more than 5 stars or I would. Once again Dorothy Garlock has written a wonderful story. Her knack for detail is wonderful. I have read so many of her books and think I've read them all then discover that there are others that I've missed. She is a very easy read. Sometimes, with other writers I have to go back and read something over but not with Dorothy's writing. The brutality of the people in this story is so real that I almost believed that these cruel characters were real. Keep up the good work Dorothy, we love your books.

5 out of 5 stars Have to agree..........2002-05-02

... Dorothy Garlock is an excellent writer, that always satisfies... and exceeds your expectations, with each and every book she writes. This story was no exception.

If you take a look at all the reviews that I've written so far, you'll see that most of the books are Dorothy Garlock books. When I picked up With Hope for the first time, I never even heard of her. I just found the book in a box of books at my mother's house, and I was looking for something different to read. I never imagined what effect it would have on me.

Now I probably read about twenty-five of the thirty plus books she has written... and this was since August 2001!!! For a person that doesn't read about two to three books a year, that should say a lot!!!

I've been passing each and every one of Ms. Garlock's books to my sisters, mother, and grandmother - after I finish each one. They like them as much as me, and the stories that I thought were great, but not her best, they liked even more. We all have different tastes, but we all love Ms. Garlock's stories!

Nevertheless, this story is just as action-packed, and romantic as all of her stories. You'll feel for the stress and terror that Dory felt each and every day of her life... finding relief only in her daughter and brother, James. Dory and James are up against the world, or so it seems, as they try and survive their day to day life, at the hands of their step-brothers, Louis and Milo. James, never really realizing how dangerous their lives were, until Ben comes to work at the logging mill run by Louis, Milo, and James.

Then the story is just like a ball of yarn coming unravelled, as it is rolled. Each event that occurs brings Dory and Ben closer together, as well as makes their lives more dangerous in the process.

There is also a mystery of the Ben's deaf daughter, and then the love she discovers in James. These two characters were so strong, and so enjoyable to read.... and easily could have been main characters in another story, without losing an ounce of charm.

This story is full of gunshots, murderers, a rapist, a questionable marshall, a mystery behind the mills accountant, and the strange family relationships and complications. Everything comes to a head, and you feel the tension of the family, then it slowly unravels leaving you in awe over the truths that are discovered.

4 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Book From Dorothy Garlock.......2001-05-05

I discovered Dorothy Garlock's work about a year ago when her book "With Hope" kept calling to me every time I walked by it in the book stores. I was so delighted in that book that I have been grabbing them every time I find one by her. No need to read the name or even what the story line is about - if it is by Dorothy Garlock it's a good read.

                Book Description

Rose Callahan, newly appointed eldress of the community of Believers at the Kentucky Shaker viliage of North Homage, confesses to a nagging resentment toward Andrew, sent by the lead ministry in Mount Lebanon to act as trustee. She knows little about the man, except that he's taken charge of the Medicinal Herb Garden, over which Rose previously had control, and he's been expanding the tiny industry and experimenting with new medicinal herbs.

Now two little girls have suddenly become deathly ill, and Rose's attention turns to the herb garden. Suspecting that the girls may have taken a notion to nibble on pretty but poisonous plants, she fears their hallowed land may have accidentally been turned into a killing ground. But as Rose investigates, mysterious death invades the gentle oasis of their spiritual world, and some chilling secrets come to light...secrets that bring Rose closer to a truth that even a nonviolent Believer might kill to keep.

5 out of 5 stars Charming Historical Mystery.......2001-09-26

Most people probably don't know what a Shaker is. I certainly didn't when I bought "Sins of a Shaker Summer" at a book sale several months ago. I was just looking for a new mystery to read, and I really didn't pay too much attention to the description on the back cover. It was on sale; what more can I say? :)

For those who don't know, a Shaker is a member of a sect, like the Quakers, that began in the 1700s. The name "Shaker" referred to their spirit-inspired trembling, which you'll witness in the book. Today, their communities are almost nonexistent, but some Shaker villages have been restored for public view, particularly in the Northeast.

"Sins of a Shaker Summer" takes place in North Homage, Kentucky, during the 1930s when the Believer population was still existing. Sister Rose Callahan is the eldress of the village and the leading sleuth in this series. She's helped by a young friend of hers, Gennie Malone, who had once been part of the community but now lives "out in the world".

The mystery begins when two young girls are found ill after they ingested several poisonous plants on accident. Rose immediately suspects the four new Believers who have transferred from another Shaker village in New York. All of them have some knowledge of herbal medicine, but one individual remains a strong suspect: Patience McCormick. However, when Rose finds Patience dead with a wound to the back of her head, she realizes she was mistaken and that the killer will do anything to keep his/her secrets hidden.

"Sins of a Shaker Summer" is a charming historical mystery. There's nothing offensive in this book, so it's appropriate for all ages. If you've already read this third installment in the Sister Rose Callahan series, I would encourage you to read the other four books: Death of a Winter Shaker (#1), A Deadly Shaker Spring (#2), A Simple Shaker Murder (#4), and Killing Gifts (#5).

It's not necessary to know anything about Shakers before you approach this book. Their lifestyle is gradually explained throughout the book without it reading like a history textbook. Although the lifestyle didn't appeal to me, some readers will probably love their simple way of life.

While I was reading "Sins of a Shaker Summer", I kept thinking about the movie Witness starring Harrison Ford. It's the only film I'm aware of that involves another similar group: the Amish. I would recommend this movie if you like the Shaker / Amish theme, but only if you don't mind the extra sex and violence, which "Sins of a Shaker Summer" has none of.

                5 out of 5 stars A shakin' good read........1999-06-01

An intricate and fascinating mystery, Sins of a Shaker Summer provides an intimate glimpse into a way of life that is all but gone. Woodworth's Shaker mysteries are all top-notch. Anyone who likes a good mystery will enjoy this trip into the strange and compelling world of the Shakers. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Historical mystery worth reading.......1999-01-30

In the Shaker village of North Homage, Kentucky seven-year-old Betsy and eight-year-old Nora becomes deathly ill from eating and/or drinking "pretend tea" and "magical flowers". When the two unconscious youngsters are found, the entire Shaker community becomes shaken by their tortorous struggle to survive. Eldress Rose Callahan believes the two little girls ate poisonous herbs found in the community's Medicinal Herb Shop that is experimenting on various formulas.

Rose begins her investigation by interviewing the sisters and brethren who work at the shop. Brother Andrew Clark heads the activity and shows proper deference to his equal. However, the other shop employees act as if they still feel the taint of the outsiders. Rose turns to a former protégé now living on the outside, who knows herbs, to help her discover the truth. However, even in the peaceful world of the nonviolent Believers, lives an individual who will kill anyone, including Rose, who

gets too close to their secret.

The Sister Rose Callahan series is always a delight as the novels provide readers with a wonderful mystery and fabulous insight into the bygone world of the Shakers. The current tale, SINS OF A SHAKER brings both elements together in a taut story line. The who-done-it is entertaining, but it is the beliefs and customs of the Shakers inside a fabulous mystery tale that makes Deborah Woodworth's novel worth reading.
