Book Description

Return now to a kingdom in constant peril; a land magical, scarred, and wondrous, where great heroes rise up from adversity to battle fearsome enemies who covet the riches within its borders. New York Times bestselling author Raymond E. Feist -- one of the world 's preeminent fantasists -- continues his extraordinary Riftwar Legacy with a sweeping tale of conflict, trial, and grim necessity, as the forces of good join together to staunch the golden lifeblood flowing from the pierced heart of Midkemia.

The vile sorcerer Sidi plans to strike the kingdom a fatal blow, setting his creature, the murderous pirate Bear, upon the high seas in pursuit of the vessel that is transporting Midkemia's most holy object: the Tear of the Gods. It is from this miraculous stone that all magic power is believed to flow. And if the Tear becomes the mage's trinket, the future will hold naught but terror, death, and unending night.

For Squire James, Lieutenant William, and the able magician Jazhara, the race is on to rescue the remarkable artifact from the bloodthirsty, unpredictable Bear and his despicable master who would use it to bring catastrophe down upon the world. But it will take greater-than-human swiftness. cunning, courage, and skill for the three to prevail. And the flight of her most peerless defenders will leave Krondor more vulnerable than ever to the terrible ambitions of the depraved.

For the mysterious criminal known as the Crawler is preparing to wreak bloody havoc to fulfill his dastardly secret agenda. Once again the sewers of Krondor teem with assassins and monsters as the hour of destiny nears. The fate of an imperiled world is in flux, as all manner of dark creatures are gathered for one unspeakable purpose: to breed the chaos that will hasten the destruction of Squire James and his brave companions...and bring about the total corruption of the Tear of the Gods.

4 out of 5 stars Only "Tears" of Joy!!!.......2007-09-14

Over the course of time, Raymond E. Feist has brought forth wonderful stories of the mystical land of Midkemia. Although non compair to the adventure, humor, or mystery of "Krondor: Tear of the Gods." The story focuses around Squire James, or "Jimmy the Hand." As the story unfolds, new characters are presented and a deep dark magic is uncovered. If you are looking for a thrilling tail of sword fights, underground societies, and the most evil vilians, then "Tear of the Gods" will catch your attention and rock your imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-27

Exciting books. I have not reread this one yet, but I remember it from about 5 years ago. RF is a great writer. If you like a good story that keeps you turning the page, choose him.

1 out of 5 stars Tear of the Gods? ugh. Call it Lifestone the sequel........2006-04-24

Has to win the award for most inane "artifact-that-is-vital-to-the-world". Come on! We already did this before. The heroes shouldn't have to defend/recover another stupid artifact. Lame. And I love this world.

4 out of 5 stars Like it or Not.......2006-04-11

Personally I love Feist's epics. Having played the computer game (Krondor) and read every single book available in paperback, I'm dismayed by "fans" who find fault. Maybe I'm too forgiving? But what is important to me is that the world Raymond writes about, lives on. To my mind, that is all that is important! I can NEVER get enough!

The only reason I rate this book as a four-star is because he has written such wonderful tales before. Consider it a 'curve' grading, yes, he has done better in the past and present! But no library of Feist's fantasy would be complete without it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Krondor Tear of the Gods.......2005-06-13

This book was great it ties up losse ends from many of Feist books form the Riftwar to the Serpent war saga. As the book goes you hear of a gem. The gem sussposely allows mortal to talk to the gods. Well every 10 year it needs ot be replaced. Well you meet the first new charcter a blood rage pirate named Bear. Hes paid to steel the gem and bring it back. Well as he goes for the gem his ship and both the holding place of the Tear of The Gods sink to the bottom while the pirates run off leaving there blood rage captain to die at the bottom. Well now the gem gone, this mean that no mortal can talk to a god for 10 years unless the new Tear is brought back to its place before the old one expires. Well like all Feist books a huge battle on the loom too between the Crawlers gang and the Mockers leaving Krondor in a state of choas and marshel law. This bring all charcter of Feist together to solve the problem and stop the now enrage pirate Bear killing everyone in sight and keeping the gem for himself. Will the TEar make it to the holy temple before the other TEar losses power. Will the Crawler and Mockers get along or will blood keep spilling. Read it to find out.

Something is rotten in the state of Krondor: the Mockers, the gang of goons and bullyboys that were James's colleagues back when he was known as Jimmy the Hand, have been decimated in vicious fighting on the rooftops and in the sewers. That, and a seemingly random slew of murders, tips off the Crown that some outside concern is attempting an underworld power-grab right under the Prince's nose. Raymond E. Feist's second Riftwar book, Krondor the Assassins, continues the action of Krondor the Betrayal with Prince Arutha and Squire James back in the Midkemian capital, returning triumphantly from their campaign against the Tsurani magician Makala and moredhel headman Delekhan. But Arutha quickly sends James, née Jimmy, back into the city's seedy underbelly to investigate, and in the process he forms a sort of Krondorian secret service. Could the assassins of the Nighthawks be responsible, or perhaps some Keshian interest? James, naturally, begins to suss the situation out, which becomes even more complicated when a hunting party including the visiting Crown Prince of Olasko is beset by shape-shifting magicians.

James and Arutha, both classic feel-good-fantasy heroes--the type of guys with a twinkle in their eye who seem virtually indestructible--eventually track their enemies down to a deserted Keshian fortress, facing assorted assassins, demons, and evil priests in the process. Not the most imaginative or compelling fantasy around, but The Assassins is still a fun romp for fans of the Krondor band. --Paul Hughes

New York Times bestselling author Raymond E. Feist returns us now to a place of unparalleled wonders--a sprawling kingdom coveted by enemies on all sides; a bustling center of commerce and magic, vibrantly alive and eternally in conflict. This is Midkemia, where great heroes are bred, and its glorious center...

                Krondor

Prince Arutha--newly returned from battle--is concerned about a rash of unexplained assassinations that plagues his capital city. And so he commissions his most trusted agent, Squire James--formerly the thief known as "Jimmy the Hand"--to discover the source of the deadly epidemic. The answers seem to lie far beneath the streets in the dank depths of Krondor, where a terrible war rages in secret between two rival criminal gangs: those who call themselves "Mockers" and others in the thrall of a mysterious being known as "The Crawler." But the deeper the Squire delves, the closer he gets to the true nature of the horror that has left untold dead in its wake. And unless James can prevent one last, unthinkable slaying, the nightmare forces of corruption and deceit will destroy his liege and reduce his beloved Krondor to ruins.

5 out of 5 stars Krondor the Assassins.......2005-06-12

Back to basic. Book number two has a a drmatic turn around frm book one. The charcter are realer and the seceray is real too. We stilll dont kno much about the man they call the Crawler cept he trying to run off the Gulid of Thevies: Mockers. Susspose the leader of the mockers is dead and leave that to nmuch question. Whle there that business a Duke stop by or well was passing by and wants to hunt. Well william(Pug son) is asked to take the Duke out for some hunting. As they are out there they get attcked with no warning. Almost seem that someone wants both the Duke killed and the Mockers gone too. Choas is runniing through Krondor and nothing can be done.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than Book 1.......2005-04-02

More of those classic characters and rich geography that I was missing from Book 1: Krondor the Betrayal.
Book 2 centers around one of my fav Feist characters, Jimmy the Hand, and the wonderful :) sewers of Krondor.
                Great read.
I recommend Feist from the beginning - Magician: Apprentice

4 out of 5 stars much better than Betrayal.......2003-08-04

Book 2 of the Legacy of the Riftwar

The first thing I have to say is that this is far better than Krondor: The Betrayal. This book feels more like a story rather than a series of action scenes slapped together and called Midkemia. The book opens shortly after The Betrayal and advances the story of something/someone threatening the kingdom. Squire James has more of a role in this book, as does Prince Arutha. For the first time in the series, William (the son of Pug) has a major starring role.

Something bad is going on in Krondor. There are mysterious murders occurring in the city, but instead of it being nobles or common folk, it seems that a lot of criminals are being killed. This wouldn't raise up a red flag, except that they are members of the Guild of Thieves: The Mockers. James is sent to investigate and learns that the Mockers have been overrun by a gang ruled by someone known as The Crawler. The leader of the Mockers, The Upright Man, is presumed dead and James suspects this is part of a plot not only against the Mockers but against the Prince as well. Someone is stirring up trouble.

At the same time, the Duke of Olasko (a duchy later appearing in The Conclave of Shadows series set a century later) is passing through and visits Krondor. He wants to hunt, so Arutha assigns William and some other soliders to escort the Duke. During the hunting trip they are attacked and it seems that someone is trying to start a war between Krondor and Olasko (or the Kingdom of the Isles, and the East). This raises the stakes even more as this mysterious enemy is fighting on several fronts.

Krondor: The Assassins deals with the fight to save Krondor from within as well as stop those trying to kill the Duke of Olasko and prevent a war. As I said, this was much better than Krondor: The Betrayal, and while it doesn't measure up close to Feist's other work like the Riftwar Saga, this was a fairly enjoyable read. It is a step back in the right direction, at the least.

3 out of 5 stars Must be because it's not based on the game..........2003-06-20

...but out of the three book series that is the Riftwar Legacy, Assassins stands as the best of the bunch. However, even the best is nowhere near Feist's previous works.

The Legacy series was based on the Betrayal at Krondor and Return to Krondor games, neither of which I ever played. But, even someone who has never ventured into the digital version of Midkemia will immediately recognize many, many videogame trappings within both Betrayal and Tear of the Gods. Fetch quests abound, plot points are thrown at us so conveniently, as if the novel was actually moonlighting as a strategy guide. The results are two ultimately disappointing slices of bread that sandwich what is actually a pretty darn good novel.

Assassins is about Squire James, formerly Jimmy the Hand who is trying to find out what's going on to drive the Mockers, the guild of theives that operates in the sewers of the city Krondor, to near exinction. He must find out what is causing this, plus what other evil rests within the city, in the form of someone known as the Crawler. Throw in the possibility of an unknown element poised to ignite a war between two nations and you have the makings of a rousing adventure.

Ok, this isn't on par with the amazing story arcs in the Riftwar and Serpentwar sagas but it is leaps and bounds better than both Betrayal and Tear of the Gods. We get to see Jimmy and William, the son of Pug, Duke of Stardock, fleshed out a bit more, and along the way we get some pretty good, not great, but good reading to boot. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Thank god, no video game.......2003-03-05

This is really the only worth-while book to read out of the Riftwar Legacy books because it was also the only book not based on a video game. Although I'll admit, its fun to play as Jimmy the Hand, and then read the adventures in print-form after beating the game - but if you didn't play the games, I can't imagine you'd have that great of a time reading this series. Except for this book. 100% original.

MIDNIGHT RIDERS is the definitive book about one of America's definitive rock bands. The Allman Brothers Band rose out of Macon, Ga., to become the most critically-acclaimed and popular group of its era even as tragedy haunted them.Based on extensive interviews with band members and their intimates, MIDNIGHT RIDERS tells one of the most riveting stories in all of rock 'n' roll. It is a story with all the elements of great drama: love and death and courage and betrayal and survival. 4 out of 5 stars WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.......2007-09-30

Sad that this book ended up being kind of polarizing, because it's a great book. Well-written and amazingly well-researched, Midnight Riders provides a detailed history of the band from it's founding in 1969, up through the early 90's.

This is a MUST have for any Allman Brothers Band fan. And highly recommended for anybody who likes their music books. This band has a very interesting history and you will enjoy reading about it!

                4 out of 5 stars a good book about a great band.......2007-08-15

The book is well written and has the facts correct. One may wish for more detail of the early years and less discussion of all of the drug problems, but that was the truth. Still a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Hey Little, Brown, and Co.: How About an Updated Edition?.......2007-06-24

I'll admit that I begin reading popular music nonfiction (especially ones pertaining to rock) with much lower expectations than I would almost any other genre. But Scott Freeman's account is noteworthy as being a book that would stand out as an admirable accomplishment compared with ANY nonfiction endeavor.

As for Freeman's subjects, what separates the Allman Brothers Band from its peers isn't just its unique combination of blues, jazz, and Southern rock. The sheer size of the group (with rotating members) means that there is a rogues' gallery of personalities to enjoy.

The tale's only downfall is that the middle third is vastly less interesting than the band's beginnings. That is, the Allman Brothers story follows the familiar pattern of a VH1 "Behind the Music" episode:

                1.) Band forms and struggles
2.) Band achieves fame and fortune.
3.) Band wallows in excesses of drug use, fleshpots, stupidity. Internecine warfare breaks out over petty nonsense. (I had no idea Greg was such a horse's arse or that Dicky Betts was slightly nuts).
                4.) Band disintegrates.
5.) (Optional) Band re-forms with a new sense of purpose.

Given this book's density of details, its masterful organization, and its many primary sources, it's incredible that it was apparently written without the cooperation of the ABB. Freeman really outdid himself; I'd love to see him release an updated edition covering recent releases and Betts's firing from ABB in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars Midnight Riders: The Story of the Allman Brothers Band.......2007-03-10

This was a thorough study in the history of one of the greatest Rock-N-Roll bands ever to grace this planet. If you are an ABB enthusiast, or even a casual listener to the classic rock radio station, this is a biography that will make it all clear.

                Book Description

Savor the magic of New York Times bestselling author Diana Palmer in a dazzlingly sensual story of turn-of-the-century Texas, of a man as enigmatic and forbidding as the sun-drenched land--and the woman who dares to cross into the uncharted territory of his heart.

To Bernadette Barron, Eduardo Cortes was the enemy. A noble count with a sprawling ranch in the grand state of Texas, Cortes challenged her with dark, penetrating eyes that seemed to pierce her very soul. Could he see the burning truth: that she loved him? It is a secret Bernadette vows to keep--especially now that she is to become his wife. For theirs is a marriage bargain, pure and simple. He needs a rich wife to save his ranch; she needs a titled husband.

Yet desire will turn a marriage of convenience into a passionate battle of wills, and change an innocent girl into a woman aware of her own powers of attraction. For it is love's fiery initiation that will make Bernadette aware of her own capacity for pleasure as well as her husband's skill at providing it. And it is the sheer force of her own love that will give her newfound strength to battle against the odds to claim a man and a love she will not be denied. . . .

                5 out of 5 stars I cried for Bernadette.......2002-04-24

This was the first Historical novel of Diana Palmer's,I read. She didnot let me down as the love story between the nobel Spaniard,Eduardo and the American Heiress,Bernadette made me cry.
The unjust treatment meted out to her by her father, really touched me.Although, the arrogant hero is no different than her other heros, this one sensibility made him quite lovable. Thanks Diana, you are the greatest.

5 out of 5 stars Good story; gorgeous cover........1999-03-11

This book was very enjoyable, and certainly less predictable than some of Ms Palmer's short contemporary Texas stories. All of her stories contain intense, compelling human relationships which draw the reader in from the early pages. Also, the cover with inside picture was gorgeous.

4 out of 5 stars I thought the book was well done.......1998-10-16

I liked the book, I thought bernadette was weak in the beginning but she got stronger as the book ended. Eduardo was a good guy except when he needed to stand by Bernadette when his family wasn't acting right. I love all of Diana Palmer's novels, I buy them without even looking to see what it's about because I know I will love it no matter what.

2 out of 5 stars I felt like I was reading an outline about the book..........1998-09-16

This is a good story... but it's not finished. I love Diana Palmer books because they are sweet yet .. fun. This book just skimmed over the top of their lifes. I didn't feel like I knew or liked either one of the main characters much less the supporting cast. This is a pass... read one of her older stories.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting historical fiction.......2005-12-09

I have read this story with students average age 14. Their response was total involvement in the plot and the character, Hannah and her horse, Promise. They did not believe at first that the book would be interesting, since they thought it would be "ho hum" history. The cover illustration suggests it might be another Paul Revere Midnight Ride to Lexington and Concord. Wrong! The main historical event is the lesser known "Salem Alarm." The author weaves fascinating historical events into a plot that today's kids love. Not a bit boring! In fact, one student said, "It was like watching a movie in my head." Kids LOVED this story and rated it a 10/10. Did I forget to mention that I loved it, too?

5 out of 5 stars A spunky young patriot in colonial Boston.......2005-07-03

Joan Harlow knows how to catch the excitement of an historical event and weave a believable story and characters into it. MIDNIGHT RIDER, is the account of fourteen-year-old Hannah Andrews who rides her horse from Boston to Salem in 1775 to warn the colonists of a British raid. Hannah, originally from Salem, has been indentured by her scheming aunt into the Boston household of General Gage, governor of the colonies. As a servant she finds herself in the midst of not only family secrets, but angry clashes between colonists and British troops. She sneaks out to secret meetings of Patriots and one day overhears General Gage's plan to seize colonial munitions stored in Salem. Hannah, siding with freedom-loving colonists knows what she has to do. She risks her life and that of her horse Promise to ride through a snowstorm to warn the people of Salem about the raid. Joan Harlow captures the character of this spunky girl who reflects the grit and determination of colonial America to gain independence.

5 out of 5 stars Also my first.......2007-06-21

This was also my first kat martin book. I read it MANY years ago, but I usually re read it about once a year because I love the description of that era, and all of the western details are wonderful. I really like how his character is well rounded out, and we get an intimate glimpse of his world when Carly is abducted and taken to their permament hiding spot. If you are a fan of historical romance, especially western, this is a must read!

4 out of 5 stars good but a few iffy parts .......2007-02-18

so quick summary of the book - our heroine, carolee is a miners daugther who goes to live with her wealthy uncle after her family dies. our hero is a california (spainard) who lives on a neighboring ranch and whose land her uncle supposedly stole. ramon hates gringas, and because caralee is a gringa, well then of course she is spoiled, blah blah blah. so the story comes down to them learning to trust each other, or more so him learning to trust her amid a few other problems thrown in their way by her uncle and ramon's activities.

ok, i liked this book. the story moved well and it was well written. the characters seemed like real people and not cookie cutters for the most part. caralee is a strong woman who knows what she wants and goes after it, but knows when to stop - I think she is also someone who knows about life. as for ramon, he was a strong alpha male who fell in love with caralee.

that being said, there are parts taht i HATE and that i almost put the book down for. in the first few pages (like 50 pages in) he abuses her pretty much - he forces her to walk for days after hitting her and blaming her for things that weren't her fault. I almost put the book down after readin this thinking it was going to be another '80s alpha male - someone who felt it was his right to hit with the woman making excuses and taking him back. however, it wasn't. after that it got much much better.

so if those parts weren't in the book i would have given it a 5, but because of them, which while i see their purpose i hated, i gave it a 4. hope this helped, and enjoy whatever book you end up reading :)

                3 out of 5 stars Pretty good!.......2004-01-17

The book was not as great as I was expecting after having read the reviews, but it was enjoyable none the less. I have rarely read a historical set in 1850's California, so the setting was a nice change.
Ramon and Caralee were a nice couple.

                5 out of 5 stars loved it.......2003-12-31

This was a truly wonderful book, I love this author. There are things that I would change about it, ofcorse, but they are all very little things. Please give this book a try. Close to the ending it fell apart a little bit, and i wanted the relationship to be more solid before it got rocky, again, but all in all it was a very very good book.

                5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2001-11-29

This was my first Kat Martin novel. I got this book in a large historical romance novel lot I won in an online auction and this was the first I chose to read.
Kat Martin is a great writer. It's pretty rare in Romance novels that the side characters come alive. I could hear Pedro and Two Hawks in their voices. Truely exceptional.
Carly was truely one of a kind. She creates strong- exceptionally strong willed- women, on par with those created by Iris Johansen or Elizabeth Lowell.
This was my first by Kat Martin, but certainly not my last. Lovely!
