An unlikely friendship, and some plot twists..........2006-08-16
"Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1976) is a novel written by Manuel Puig (1932-1990), an Argentinian playwright, novelist and screenwriter. Its subject is controversial, as it delves upon themes such as sexual identity, violence and torture. All the same, I think reading it is worthwhile, as it is one of those books that tell a story that comes alive to the reader...
In case you haven't heard about "Kiss of the Spider Woman", I will tell you a little about its plot. The main characters are Valentin and Molina, two men that share a prison cell, during the Argentinian dictatorship of the late 1970's. Molina is a sensitive soul that happens to be an homosexual, and Valentin a revolutionary that despises the fact that Molina has no political ideas (and is confused by the notion that someone can choose to be gay). Due to the fact that both share the same cell, Valentin and Molina spend some time talking to each other about their ideas and feelings, something they wouldn't have done in any other circumstance. Despite their differences, an unlikely friendship will begin between them, a friendship that may well turn into something more. However, there is more than one twist that will surprise you in this story, even though I won't tell you about that in order not to spoil the surprise.
On the whole, this is an engaging book that is likely to interest the reader, but that is not adequate for children, and that won't appeal to those that don't want to read a book that deals with homosexuality. I liked the way in which Puig told Valentin and Molina's story, and that is the reason why I give it 3.5 stars...

Very visual gay "Thousand and One Nights".......2006-03-29
Having watched the 1985 film starring William Hurt as Molina and Raul Julia as Valentin, I always intended to read the novel itself. Since this is the first Puig novel I've read I was astounded at how incredibly visual it is. The descriptions of faces, dresses, furniture, buildings and landscapes are so rich as to be almost unbearable. It did me make feel as if though I were partly blind, missing all these features that a writer like Puig conveys so well.
The story first: Molina (a gay middle aged child molester) and Valentin (a middle class young revolutionary) share a cell in an Argentinian prison during the dictatorship around 1975. Valentin is a rational man who uses his captivity to improve himself through reading, whereas Molina is a phantasist, who seeks to evade his squalid surroundings by elaborate rememorations of movies. Eventually, Molina narrates the movies to Valentin, usually cutting off at key suspense points because of bedtime. The movies are of the B- sort, but very appealing. They include 1940s horror/suspense, a Nazi propaganda musical so over the top that it is almost pornographic and probably far more effective qua propaganda than the actual movies of the period, musical drama/fantasy, a "tele-novela" (soap opera)-type Latin story about upper class revolutionaries, blacksploitation voodoo in some unidentified Caribbean island and a Mexican 1940s musical around a particularly appealing genre (the bolero). Initially Valentin tries to analyze the movies through rationalist (Marxist and Freudian) lenses, but eventually he surrenders to fantasy and allows himself to enjoy them as love stories, which they all are. Both Molina and Valentin are quite sparse about their own stories, but we find that Molina is a mamma's boy who can only play a passive sexual role, and that Valentin is an educated, upper-middle class man who, in spite of political correctness, prefers women of a similar background rather than committed revolutionaries.
Just below this level of story-telling, there is a darker, more realistic one: Molina has been promised an amnesty if he gets useful information from Valentin about his subversive group. He is a stool-pigeon. And the prison warden is slowly poisoning Valenti?n's food, so that he will have to take prescription drugs that will make it easier to break his will and get him to confess. However, Molina seems to fall in love with Valentin and eventually stops cooperating with the authorities. Valentin incurs in some lirical but remarkably shocking (to this reader) sex with Molina, who agrees to cooperate with Valentin's subversive group in spite of his lack of political ideas. Molina is released and is eventually killed when he attempts to liaise with Valentin's people. Valentin is tortured and physically broken in prison, but he manages to avoid giving his comrades away by taking refuge in fantasy, as Molina taught him.
How does the book compare to the movie? William Hurt is perfect as Molina, whereas Raul Julia overplays the "macho" side of the Valentin character, and makes him sound less educated and of a lower class than he is in the book. The visuals conjured by Molina's storytelling may not be reproduced in an actual movie, and they are as rich as anything by Lezama Lima or Cabrera Infante, Cuban writers to whom Puig is indebted. The book is full of cinematic references beyond the obvious ones. Molina and Valentin are like a latter-day Laurel and Hardy, or like Sancho and Don Quixotte. Molina is emotion, intuition and feeling, whereas Valentin is reason and logic. They are like a divided self, that can only be complete when both sides are joined. This union destroys Molina but strengthen's Valentin. Molina seduces Valentin both sexually and emotionally, but Valentin turns Molina into an instrument of his political will.
A peculiarity of the book is its extensive footnotes concerning the origin and true nature of homosexuality, a veritable romp through Freudianism and its offshoots, including revolutionary sexual politics so dated that it brought a smile to this reader's face. I can't imagine why they are relevant to this book, but I enjoyed them and learned a few things.
Overall this is an enjoyable, well-written book, but I didn't especially enjoy the sexual parts, although I'll grant that they were relevant to the story and as tastefully written as it can be managed given the characters' circumstances.
kiss of the spider woman.......2004-04-13
a good read if you're interested on how to use dialogue to convey action/emotion
for the footnotes.......2004-03-31
Since there are already so many reviews for this excellent book, I will limit my contribution to a few comments on the footnotes. They are not mere postmodern flourish, nor are they superfluous. They function in several ways. First, they mark a certain reception of psychoanalytic theory in Argentina. Secondly, although in the beginning they correspond to the story (in the tradition way that footnotes do -- as elaboration on a point that cannot be contained in the narrative) they begin to loose their direct correspondence as the story continues. This "unraveling" corresponds to the unraveling of the framing device (most importantly the telling of stories), which traditionally is a narrative structure that functions to hold sexual desire at bay. In other words, the footnotes lose their hold as the characters become closer, sharing more personal facets of their lives, and eventually becoming sexual. In this way the footnotes subtend the narrative in such a way as to track sexual desire and the confusing and contradictory aspects (and theories) that attend to it. I think it is essential to read the footnotes along with the narrative since they add to Puig's experimental narrative style. If they are confusing, that is the point. Unexpected desire, like love, always is.
A post modern flourish.......2003-09-30
Some very thoughtfully written responses (Rebekah, reader from Seattle, Jenna, pjmittal, et al). And some good synopses as well (be careful though, Erika's, while well written, is a bit of a spoiler).
Since the above topics have been so adroitly covered, I won't dwell on them. But I couldn't resist seconding Stephanie Zuercher: one of the most interesting things about this novel is the choice Puig made to use dialog, almost exclusively, to tell the story. As you read consider this technique & the fact that you still get an excellent picture of the setting. Masterful prose styling. & very original. I can't think of another writer that's done the same (but I'd be interested to hear if anyone else can; please throw the author's names/titles my way, as would love to read them).
& for those that didn't understand the use of footnotes or didn't like them--it's merely a post modern flourish (perhaps an homage to T. S. Eliot's _The Waste Land_?). Ignore them till you reach the end then go back and read them. Or ignore them entirely. But read the book. It's an A+

Theatrical masterworks by Puig.......2001-02-03
"Kiss of the Spider Woman and Two Other Plays" brings together three theater pieces by the great Argentine writer Manuel Puig. Both the title play and "Mystery of the Rose Bouquet" have been translated into English by Allan Baker; "Under a Mantle of Stars" has been rendered into English by Ronald Christ. Together, these three plays demonstrate the imaginative power, psychological insight, and compassion of a major artist.
"Kiss of the Spider Woman" is probably the best known of the three plays; it has been adapted into both a major motion picture and an award winning musical play. Telling the story of imprisoned cellmates--one a flamboyant gay man, the other a passionate political revolutionary--"Kiss" explores such themes as sexual identity, suffering, and self respect. "Under a Mantle of Stars" is a surreal piece that examines crime, violence, lust, and twisted family ties. The final play in the collection, "Mystery of the Rose Bouquet," is a moving drama about a hospitalized elderly woman and her nurse. "Mystery" deals with such issues as loss, duplicity, memory, and, ultimately, hope.
In "Under a Mantle of Stars," one character remarks that another character "dares to say whatever comes into her mind." To which a third character replies, "Which is one form of madness." Perhaps, like all great writers, Puig shared this special, naked "madness." But whether madness or genius, his works are memorable and powerful. This is an essential volume for those interested in Latin American literature, gay studies, or 20th century drama.
Three exeptional plays by an extremely talented writer........1999-06-06
Most people who have read any Manuel Puig, are familiar with his Kiss of a Spiderwoman, which the film and the Tony winning musical are based on. Also included in this book are two other plays. Under a Mantel of Stars is an outrageous sexual farce. Mystery of the Rose Bouquet is the real treat of the bunch. The play is about two elderly women, a nurse and her patient. It shows what Puig did best- write women. His female characters are some of the strongest and most interesting that I have ever read. All of the plays have relatively small casts and should be relatively inexpensive to produce.

It's ok.......2003-12-23
This book is good. It's interesting to see how Manuel Puig integrates elements from films into this book. The movie is really really really bad. Do not watch it. The book is an ok read
Great book. It changed some of my perceptions........2002-07-08
I used to be a little prejudiced, but after reading this book I decided to stop being judgamental. Everybody has a good reason for being a certain way.
On the other hand, this book is magistrally written. It is easy to read and it is also very different, written in the format of a theatre play.Highly recommend it.
Great Puig's book.......2000-05-26
As Boquitas Pintadas, El Beso de la Mujer Araña is another great book from Puig. Gotta read it before seing the movie (which is also great).
Great book.......2000-05-24
Great book, better movie!! I really enjoyed it, as I did with Boquitas Pintadas...

Not one of Robards's best - or Romance's best...........2007-02-12
I have to disagree with previous reviews. The ending of this book did nothing to resolve the intense conflict between Jesse and Clive - it's like she just gave in and gave up. At one point I almost threw this one across the room when Jesse comes to the conclusion that Clive is many negative things - but NOT a killer - when he HAD killed another man within the prologue of the book! This book had a lot of potential - but, the ending was so contrived it was insulting. Stick to other much better books by Robards. This one left me disgusted.
Just a great SEXY...Enjoyable read!!.......2006-03-11
I like many other reviewers have been a Karen Robards fan for a long time and I too have to state that this book is one of her better ones!! The hero and heroine are very likeable and fun. This is one of those historical romances set in the south that has you reading it way into the wee hours of the morning!!
Sweet Tale Worth Reading.......2006-03-01
This book is about a young lady who cannot help but fall in love with the sexy man that lands on her doorstep ~ on her widowed stepmother's arm, of course.
This book is a page-turner b/c it has it all; scandal, shame, romance, adultery, murder, etc. The romance aspect of this novel was sweet b/c Jessie and Stuart had developed a relationship before they fell for one another.
I'm only giving it three stars b/c Jessie's character seemed to lose her innocence and sweetness after she recognized her feelings for Stuart. Another reason I'm giving it 3 stars is b/c it was hard to believe Stuart was really in love with her.
I don't totally agree with the previous reviews........2005-09-09
Although I enjoyed the book, it is not the best work by Karen Robards, nor is it one of the best romance novels ever written. And it is definately NOT the "longest sex scene in history"! Whoever wrote that review has never read Elizabeth Lowell's earlier works where many of the sex scenes were much longer and much more graphic. There is nothing particularly special nor memorable about the plot or the characters. Morning Star is simply a fun read to pass the time.
Nothing Could take my Attention away from this BOok!!.......2005-08-28
In the hot south, Clive McClintock wins a large bet and that very same night has it stolen away from him. Killing one of the robbers's, he smoothly takes on his identity (that of Stuart Edwards). Shortly after, he meets and marries a beauty named Celia. Sadly, it is a marriage of conveniance because the sole purpose that he marries her is because because of Mimosa, her cotton-abundant land. This marriage of conveniece was not a happy marriage. Celia also cames with some bittersweet baggage, a stepdaughter named Jessie, from her previous marriage.
At first, Jessie is too much to handle. welll...almost.. She rebells against her 'stepmama' and is totally against the marriage. But the more she gets to know Stuart , the more she likes and befriends him. When her crush makes fun of her clothes, Stuart is there to cheer her up. When she tells him that she hasn't bought anything for herself in 3 yrs, he takes care of it and gets her clothes that actually fit. He befrieds her and falls for her but when she fings out that she isn't really who he said he was .....all hell breaks loose. "Veni, Vini, vici ..i came, i saw i conquored" this is exactly what Stuart/Clive seems to be doing with Jessie's home and heart.
I really like this story. The writing style was nice and simple. This is the first book that I have read by Karen Robards and I'm not about to stop. There was a part that I thought the plot of the story was going to go another way ...like Clive's protitute girlfriend, Luce was secretly on in the robbery but oh welll..i guess that was a figment of my imagination. Other than that, the book aslo has wonderful imagery like the way that the starts sparkle at night and how the sun sets.. or how Jessie looks when she first wears her first dress. The characters are sweet and attractive and make a great pair. No complaints in that department. Don't hesistate to give this book a try

Beautiful.......2003-08-07
This book contains Ashley Bryans wonderful illustration that are related to the music in the book and Christmas. This book has five full sheet music version of songs. (Not for the novice or beginning pianist.) Although I did not recognize all the songs (four are not traditional Christmas songs), once I played the music and read the words, I saw how they related. In fact, I bought the soulful rendition of "Go, Tell it on the Mountain" to my chior. It is written in that gospel music, church manner that was perfect. I am going to use the book for this years Christmas play. I checked it out of the library right before christmas last year and did not have time. Great book. Beautiful picture. Meaningful and moving music. A great buy!

Book Description
Perhaps it's the Irish in her: Hannah Gray is as headstrong as she is sensible, as bold as she is willful. Having rescued her nephew, Pip, from an uncertain fate, she is fleeing with him as far and as fast as she can -- until she finds herself in England at the foot of Ravenscar, the great manor above Nodding Cross.
When Austen Dante takes them in, Hannah is curiously drawn to the powerful but elusive master of Ravenscar. Needing the shelter of his home, she agrees to the daunting task of transcribing his musical compositions -- all the while having to pretend she understands a single note! Slowly, the two strangers come to know each others' deepest secrets: Hannah discovers the painful upbringing that fires his soul -- and a guarded truth that has followed him for years. And Dante, entranced by Hannah's rare spirit and candid ways, learns of the memories she keeps hidden -- and why young Pip needs a safe haven. But just as they open their hearts to each other, the forces that Hannah fled draw ever closer, threatening to shatter their precious idyll -- and test the fragile bonds of their newfound love.

Just OK and a Little Disappointing.......2005-07-30
When I read Cates' previous book, Gather the Stars, I loved it. A noble (character-wise) hero who was kind, gentle, romantic; a likeable heroine. So I was expecting something just as good from Morning Song. And, yes, the stories are similar...too similar.
Cates simply rehashes the same plot, different setting. Toward the end of the book there was even an incident that was exactly the same - identical - to an incident at the same point in Gather the Stars.
Also, this author's phrasing became extremely annoying. First Austen is astonishingly handsome, then dauntingly handsome, then breath-stealingly handsome...and she does this over and over again. Alright already, we get it, he's handsome! If I had to read one more time how handsome Austen was, I was ready to scream. Another word, "thunderation" just made me laugh.
Inconistencies were a problem, too. One example is that Austen notices Hannah's "full bosom" (paraphrased). She is supposedly half-starved after trudging for miles. She is also described as "so thin". One would conclude that she must be emaciated; therefore, how likely would it be that a woman in this condition and under these circumstances would have such a "full bosom"? Not very.
This could have been a great book, if the author had put forth a little effort. She must have been under pressure from the publisher to crank out the next novel. Too bad...
One of her best.......2000-05-13
I have read most of Kimerly Cates work and this is definatly one of her best. The characters are warm and endearing, even Austen shows his true colors from almost the begining. Read it, you won't be disappointed!
A Floridian.......1999-10-13
Best series I've read....But then again, I'm a bit of a sentimental fool....Can't wait for Lily Fair to come out.

Stunning pictures.......2006-02-26
What a beautiful book! This book has great illustrations to go along with the song "Morning has Broken" My little one likes to find the bird in every picture. Sometimes I'll just read the words and sometimes I'll sing the song. Either way, she enjoys hearing it and taking in the vivid pictures. I actually picked up this book before I had children because I fell in love with the pictures. While your child may not understand the depth of the words, the illustations will delight them.
Music to Live By.......1998-12-05
This book is an inspiration for children and adults alike. The deep Christian message of this beautifully illustrated book will stir the innermost spirit of those willing to consider it's message. My two year old daughter loves to sing along with the ancient yet familiar gaelic melody popularized by Cat Stevens in the 1970's. Revisit a familiar melody and reconsider the profound meaning of the text while you delight you children with this wonderful book. A real keepsake for those fortunate enough to have found it!

Fascinating, Comforting.......2007-07-24
I think Sarah Hinze has produced a top quality book with "Songs of the Morning Stars". She combines her thoughts on the topic with tons of real stories also related to the topic (you can never have too many of them!)This book will make you think about where you came from. I found it interesting as well as comforting. It's one of it's kind because there are so many accounts today of Near Death Experiences but so little of Pre-Birth Experiences. The table of contents reads:
Meet the Morning Starts
Before Birth, What?
Children are Eternal Souls
And Some are Cast Away
The Gift of Souls
Twelve 'Truths' about humans, God and the Purpose of Life
Changing Hearts
Book Description
First published in the early sixties, this extensively revised edition of a classic study contains many newly recovered examples of the "blues" as well as a text updated in the light of developments over the past thirty years with respect to Civil Rights reform.
