Book Description
One of America's most powerful and thought-provoking novelists, New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult brilliantly examines belief, miracles, and the complex core of family.
When the marriage of Mariah White and her cheating husband, Colin, turns ugly and disintegrates, their seven-year-old daughter, Faith, is there to witness it all. In the aftermath of a rapid divorce, Mariah falls into a deep depression -- and suddenly Faith, a child with no religious background whatsoever, hears divine voices, starts reciting biblical passages, and develops stigmata. And when the miraculous healings begin, mother and daughter are thrust into the volatile center of controversy and into the heat of a custody battle -- trapped in a mad media circus that threatens what little stability the family has left.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful & Haunting.......2007-10-10
My very first Jodi Picoult story, and will not be my last -- amazing and beautiful, it definitely will carry you through any business trip... I travel frequently for business and airport time is never any fun. Thanks to this novel, I enjoyed my week of travel -- guaranteed to keep your interest while on the beach as well.
Keeping Faith and faith.......2007-10-02
Since Faith has been having difficulties accepting her parents' divorce, everyone thought that her new imaginary friend, "her guard", was merely a coping mechanism. "Her guard" teaches Faith things about religion that she had no way of knowing otherwise. When her grandmother dies, Faith brings her back to life. That's when things become difficult. A religious following gathers outside of Faith's house. This crowd includes Ian Fletcher, a man who makes a living by investigating religious phenomenon and usually proving them to be hoaxes. The situation intensifies, leading Faith's father to begin fighting for custody. Faith's mother, Mariah, fights to keep her daughter, Faith, as well as to keep faith in her daughter and herself. Therefore the title is actually a very clever double-entendre.
The characters are very well-developed, making this unlikely story seem to be very plausible. The vivid settings also add realism to the story. This absolutely enthralling story of Faith is almost impossible to put down. Congratulations to Jodi Picoult on her masterpiece, my favorite of all her books that I have read so far!
Great potential in the plot, but a horrible delivery.......2007-09-26
The plot of this book immediately caught my attention. It's intriguing, controversial, supernatural; something to make people think. With a better writer, this could have been an extraordinary book! Unfortuately, it was painful to read.
Rather than consistently following one character's perspective, the author switched points-of-view frequently and with little warning. For the most part, it was written in first person, present tense, but even that was inconsistent. Sometimes it was first person for Faith (the young girl) and sometimes first person for her mother or her psychologist. Sprinkled throughout were flashbacks that added very little to the plot. I rolled my eyes more than once at the trite dialog. Worst of all, I suffered through the book only to reach an inconclusive end. The final pages sparked more confusion than resolve.
I didn't expect accurate or even consistent theology. I did, however, expect the author to be consistent with her story. I didn't want her characters to match my personal doctrine, but I think did expect the author to understand her characters' beliefs and explain them thoroughly. The end of the book simply highlighted how little the author knew about the world she had created.
Final Thoughts: Painful and disappointing. The plot was fascinating, but the delivery was awful. Not recommended.
It's ok - raises questions.......2007-09-24
I have to agree with a lot of reviewers - this book was predictable and relationships weren't built properly. As I finished the book I felt the author barely had written anything original. So why did I like this book? Even though much of the plot has been done before - I think it's a good book club book. The author puts scenarios together that are great for discussion and reflection. The question of who is God and where is God in our own life is something this book doesn't answer - but seems to point out the need to have thought out answers for ourselves....
Great Read.......2007-09-12
Once again she's done it. I was very sorry when it ended!!! She dealt with a very difficult subject and made it very understandable. Awesome!

Book Description
Hailed by the Washington Post Book World as "one of our era's most vital masters of the short form," Ann Beattie offers readers unforgettable glimpses of people coming to terms with the world around them. Most of the characters in Where You'll Find Me grew up in the 1960s and 1970s; when we meet them they are in their twenties and thirties and embody a curious, yet familiar, fusion of hope and despair. In finely crafted, often surprising narratives, Beattie writes of women nursing broken hearts, men looking for love, and married couples struggling to stay together.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing, insightful and so very real!.......1996-09-05
Ann Beattie's very best ever! Mrs. Beattie has the power tocapture the human spirit with words like a child with a butterfly net. Her stories expose a piece of truth that the reader will find lies well hidden within themselves. Each story not only provides insight into the life of a character who appears naked on the page in a brilliant light, but also forces an intraverted look at oneself. Beattie writes what we are afraid to think.

orville chatt's design philosophy in a nutshell.......2000-02-05
This lovely small book would be an excellent resource for any library. It was my good fortune to be a student of jewelry in 1979 with the author. My subsequent immersion in design and fabrication of many varied jewelry mediums was spurred on by my respect for Orville and his exuberance and delight in seeing the world as design possibility, and his ability to translate ideas into metal. The book is a classic and deceptively simple treatise on good design. Thanks Orville!

In the world of modern medicine, a lot of us feel as if we're on our own when it comes to making decisions about our health. Sometimes the problems that arise are a slam-dunk--the symptoms are clear-cut, the treatment is standard, the results are immediate. But often we're faced with problems our doctor hasn't seen before, or that are more annoying than life-threatening, and we have to do our own research and draw our own conclusions.
Nancy Oster (a medical writer), Lucy Thomas (a medical librarian), and Dr. Darol Joseff (a physician) teach an adult-education course on finding health-related information on the Internet, and this book arose from their students' requests for more in-depth techniques and strategies to uncloak their own medical mysteries.
The authors recommend that the search for a medical solution begin and end with a doctor--someone who can offer a diagnosis, and then help you sort out the information you find on your own. What happens in between is in play. Nowadays it seems a foregone conclusion that you'll head to the Internet for information. "The Internet, however, has no central catalog and no review or oversight process to control the quality of information you'll find," the authors note. In other words, it's a short hop from legitimate medical information to "aspartame causes brain tumors," with no referee to tell you when you've hopped out of bounds.
Although the tips on searching the Internet and medical libraries are the highlights of Making Informed Medical Decisions, the authors also include vital information regarding your rights as a patient, interpreting health statistics, and seeking alternative therapies. Those who have been recently diagnosed with a chronic or life-altering medical condition would seem to be the most natural audience for this book, but many families will also want to keep it nearby--and then hope they never need to use it. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
It's no secret that millions of us are more involved in our own health care decisions--whether we want to be or not. We may be looking for the latest advance that might give us an edge in survival; looking for complementary treatments to help a chronic condition; investigating whether a treatment recommendation is good medicine or cost-cutting; studying to understand what the doctor told us in our allotted ten- minute visit; or trying to understand if a media story or pharmaceutical ad applies to our situation. However, we're starting our search without much context of what we're looking for or understanding of how we might make best use of the array of resources. Making Informed Medical Decisions illuminates the process. Its subject matter includes:
- Tips for researching for someone else
- Reading a journal article (and understanding what it says)
- Making practical sense of statistics and risk
- Understanding variations and advances in standard treatment options
- Exploring complementary treatments
- Locating a likely clinical trial
- Making a powerful ally of your doctor
Authors Oster, Thomas, and Joseff offer the shared viewpoints of patient advocate, medical librarian, and medical doctor--each of whom is dedicated to teaching and empowering. Stories from dozens of patients and family members looking for their own answers are included.

An essential companion for patients.......2001-03-05
In a time of personal crisis, when you or a loved one is stricken with a serious illness, it's daunting task, both emotionally and intellectually, to inform yourself fully. There's so much to learn, and it's often so scary and confusing. It's hard to know where to go, and what information to trust. The temptation is to simply place your faith blindly in your doctor's recommendation, and hope for the best. And yet, it's clear that the best medical decisions are fully informed and made in partnership with physicians.
This excellent guide is the perfect companion for patients and their families to learn how to negotiate the health care system, make the best choices, and get the best care possible. It's accessible, thorough and above all, intelligent. It makes the issues comprehensible to someone unfamiliar with the medical world, yet never condescends. It's exactly the kind of book I could have really used when I was diagnosed with cancer twelve years ago, and I'm so grateful it now exists. These are tools that everyone needs.
A necessary guide.......2001-03-02
At some point in time, all of us will have need for this book. We no longer can count on the overworked doctor to know everything about every disease and it is up to us to question, learn and become advocates for our health and health care. This book gives you the guidance necessary to become an informed advocate for your own health care. The book guides you through doctor's visits, how to get clarification of your condition and understand the impact of the particular disease you are dealing with. Numerous resources; experts, print and the web, are discussed, with the pros and cons of each presented and tips for evaluating their reliability.
The authors also present information concerning researching standard treatment options for health conditions as well as alternative treatments. Most importantly, I believe, they also encourage reaching out to others who have already been there, with information for locating people who have been through it.
The book is well organized, extremely clear and very easy to read. It is a fantastic source of information for anyone who finds they need to research health issues for themselves, friends or family members. I would highly recommend it for anyone to have as a medical reference.

He's also the man who's been haunting her thoughts since a chance meeting on a train. Although Mick's pursuit leaves Jen longing to surrender to him, she's certain he's not interested in a serious relationship with a black woman. It's up to Mick to change her mind.
Customer Reviews:
Where You Find It entertaing.......2007-09-20
I did read other reviews but found I had to check it out for myself. Yes the heroine Jennifer was a little controlling...I am woman I can do it all on my own, and part of me admired her for it. However Mick was the man. He didn't let her dictate the movement of the relationship. Okay she broke it off but I somehow had faith my Mick would wear her down, boy did he. The other charcters were wonderful support in the story. Her little girl who drew them together and her best friend telling GF how it is. Love when a GF honestly tells the other one they are stuck on stupid, it just tickles me. Well the book satifised this romantic reader, and I'm very pleased I purchased this book.
Where You Find It.......2007-06-17

Complete waste of a tree.......2007-03-26
This book was a waste of my time. I really wish that I could have the three hours it took to read this "book" back. First off, the typos threw me off, second, the main character Jenn was the most indecisive woman I have ever read about (and I hate indecisive people) Third, Mick's constant references to Jenn as his "Brown Beauty" and "brown love" really irked and insulted me. I am supportive of IR love but this book left me with a bad taste in my mouth. If my man kept on referring to my skin tone, I would dump him in a minute. Better off skipping this book altogether. It's not worth the money spent.
Tell him you love him.........2006-12-29
This is what I kept yelling at the book at 1am when I couldn't put the book down to sleep. That is the only reason I gave this book 4 stars. This is a IR that I enjoyed until the end and a cute little girl that caughted my heart. Don't let the cover fool you, it is totally centered around a BW/WM.
Jennifer Smallwood is a single, black, female who is late and the train is crowded. She finds a seat beside the drop-dead gorgeous, George Clooney look-a-like on the train, Mick Rielly. She can't even keep her mind on studying her financial reports, because her heart is beating fast and her gaze keep going back to his face. She has never been this attracted to a white man before. After fall all over him, she realizes this maybe more than she can handle.
Mick Reilly can not get the woman from the train off her mind, but his enjoyment as of late had been for a cute little girl named Tia. When Tia's mom turns out to be the woman from the train, Mick feels like his luck must finally be turning around.
This story make me laugh, cry, and want so much for both characters. I enjoyed every scene and the character who stole every scene was Tia. Her bluntness was what carried the characters and the dialogue.
I highly recommend this book. Buy it! You won't regret it!
Failed Miserably.......2006-06-04
Jen's young daughter is determined to fix her up with Mick, her "old" friend from the park. Mick (white) turms out to be the man Jen met on the train and to whom she is attracted. This could have been a great story if not for the stereotypical fickle female - yes I want you one minute, no I don't think you could love a black woman the next. I was quite fed up with Jen's hot and cold reactions to Mick. Also, it is a bit weird that Mick could form such a bond with a five year old about whom he knows nothing and I found it annoying his constant reference to my "brown beauty this and brown beauty that" in reference to Jen. Jen and Mick never really dated so I never got to know them. Jen did not know Mick's parents were deceased until page 149 - the book had 151 pages. Jen's five year old daughter Tia is too grown-up for her age. I do know kids sometimes say the darndest things, but the words coming out of that child's mouth was not believable for a 5 year old. This could have been a good book but it missed the mark.

Great Book - Worth Reading.......2006-05-20
I wasn't sure what to expect since of the two reviews showing - one person loved it and the other person didn't. So, I took a chance and ordered it. I'm glad I did.
It's easy to read and has a lot of great ideas about how to meet people and generate sales. I'm not a natural "people" person but this book gave me a lot of ideas as far as how to approach people naturally. The ideas she gives make it easy to incorporate your business selling into everyday life. I probably won't do all the ideas she suggests but I'm glad I got the book. It's motivated me to get out there and shown me how.
When You Run Out of Family and Friends: The Lemon Aid Lead Alphabet By Christie Northrup.......2006-02-22
This book will help you renew your business and confidense.
Disappointing.......2005-09-20
Unfortunately, the title was more promising than the lists of ideas inside. Not as helpful as her other book, "Presentations for Profit," which I rated as a 5-star MUST HAVE book.

Hearing a Different Drummer: A Holocaust Survivor's Search for Identity
ASIN: 0595390021 |
Book Description
Shortly after the devastating Kristallnacht in Germany in 1938, author Benjamin Hirsch's mother sends him and his four older siblings on a Kindertransport to Paris from Frankfurt, Germany. After almost three years of hiding in France, they escape through Spain to Portugal where they board a ship and arrive in the United States on two separate convoys, eventually settling in Atlanta, Georgia. But Hirsch's parents and his younger siblings are not so fortunate-they perish in Auschwitz at the hands of the Nazis.
Anti-Semitism is at its peak in the United States, and the children must learn to adapt to an America at war. Growing up in the American South as orphaned Jewish emigrants during the 1940s and early 1950s, Hirsch and his four brothers and sisters struggle-each in his or her own way-to hold on to their traditional Jewish values and practices. But in the aftermath of war, the children learn to thrive and excel in their new country.
The prequel to Hirsch's first book, Hearing a Different Drummer, Home Is Where You Find It poignantly chronicles Hirsch's journey from the horrors of Nazism to a new life in America.
