At the end of Invisible Life, Raymond and Nicole had just ended a blossoming love affair when Nicole found herself unable to cope with Raymond's bisexuality. Just As I Am begins soon after that, as the two former lovers try to rebuild their lives. Raymond has moved to Atlanta to practice law, and he continues to question whether he's genuinely bisexual or really gay, but is unable to accept that a real lifetime love might happen with anyone but a wife. (The reappearance of charismatic--and closeted--pro football player Basil Henderson doesn't exactly make things easier for him.) Nicole has agreed to marry her rich, white lover, who's bankrolling her latest Broadway effort, even though she's not sure she loves him. She and Raymond are reunited when their mutual best friend, Kyle, succumbs to his HIV infection and Raymond returns to New York City to be by his side. Over the years, E. Lynn Harris has proved himself a powerful male counterpart to the commercial success of African American authors like Terry McMillan; the turbulent plot of Just As I Am, with its relentless focus on characters' feelings, ably demonstrates how he's become so popular.
Book Description
E. Lynn Harris's blend of rich, romantic storytelling and controversial contemporary issues like race and bisexuality have found an enthusiastic and diverse audience across America. Readers celebrate the arrival in paperback of his second novel, Just As I Am, which picks up where Invisible Life left off, introducing Harris's appealing and authentic characters to a new set of joys, conflicts, and choices. Raymond, a young black lawyer from the South, struggles to come to terms with his sexuality and with the grim reality of AIDS. Nicole, an aspiring singer/actress, experiences frustration in both her career and in her attempts to find a genuine love relationship. Both characters share an eclectic group of friends who challenge them, and the reader, to look at themselves and the world around thern through different eyes. By portraying Nicole's and Raymond's joys, as well as their pain, Harris never ceases to remind us that life, like love, is about self-acceptance. In this vivid portrait of contemporary black life, with all its pressures and the complications of bisexuality, AIDS, and racism, Harris confirms a faith in the power of love -- love of all kinds -- to thrill and to heal, which will warm the hearts of readers everywhere.

GREAT!!!!!!.......2007-02-16
Must read!!!!!!!!!! This was a great book. But you should read them in order. Star with INVISIBLE LIFE...:)
So Good.......2006-06-07
This book is deep. Couldn't put it down. The ending was sad but still very good.
AMAZING!!!.......2006-03-29
This is one of the best book that I ever read. Raymond tyler is the Main Character in the book. Raymond life style is very secretive person, his secretive about being bisexualy. such as he wouldn't go to a gay public places. He scared that it might affect his career. And you wont able to tell just by looking at him. he is a lawyer that scared to come out of the closet about is sexuality. HE think he might lose is job if he make everybody know's about his personal life.
less average (2-2.5 stars).......2005-03-31
I can't say enuff 'bout this but I thought it was a novel that has to deal w/ life of something like from famous black authors of Richard Wright to Langston Hughes to Ralph Ellison or somethin like that. I believe it's a ok book even tho I don't read it very oftenly all the time 'cuz it deals w/ the situations between HIV/AIDS, sex and celibacy. First of all I never read a sex book in my life. I thought it was cool but it goes to tell you how to beware about the diffrence bout the good side vs. the bad side of sex. I'ma think I'll keep it 'round a lil longer or so. Good work E. Lynn Harris.
A Good Read.......2005-01-06
Just As I am was really good. Reading Invisible Life really helped alot when reading this book because it provides some back ground. I felt like I knew the characters in this book. Kyle is my favorite in this book. He is so funny and spunky. Kyle's story will touch your heart. This book grabbed me more emotionally than Invisible Life. Nicole's experience with love is beautiful. Ray is still battling with himself. Just As I Am is a book of friendship, love, and self acceptance. Read it.

Book Description
As the legal controversy continues--this newly revised and updated third edition of the landmark bestseller contains new, critically important information for patients, loved ones, and medical personnel.
The original publication of
Final Exit stunned the nation by offering people with terminal illness a choice on how--and when--to end their suffering. It helped thousands by giving clear instructions to doctors, nurses, and families on how to handle a patient’s request for euthanasia.
In the wake of court cases and legislative mandates, this revised and updated third edition goes far beyond the original to provide new information about the legality of euthanasia and assisted suicide, and a thoughtful examination of the personal issues involved. It has become the essential source to help loved ones and supportive doctors remain within existing laws and keep a person’s dying intimate, private, and dignified.
With deep compassion and sensitivity, it spells out why a living will may not be sufficient to have a person’s wishes carried out--and what document is a better alternative. It updates where to get proper drugs and exactly how to carry out the quickest, most peaceful way to make a final exit. Finally, it gently talks to a person considering self-deliverance about alternatives, planning, and the means to make every death a "good death" at our time of greatest need.

It's too bad we need to know this information but Mr. Humphry provides it in a straightforward, matter-of-fact fashion. In addition to the how-to information, the book very importantly includes how-NOT-to information. I am very thankful for freedom of the press and to Mr. Humphry for providing this necessary information.

Book Description
To die, kick the bucket, to meet your Maker, dead as a doornail, get whacked, smoked, bite the dust, sleep with the fishes, go six feet under–whatever death is called, it's going to happen. In 1789 Ben Franklin wrote, "In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes." Death remains a certainty. But how do we die? It's the enormous variety of HOW that enlivens FINAL EXITS.
According to death certificates, in 1700 there were less than 100 causes of death. Today there are 3,000. With each advance of technology, people find new ways to become deceased, often causing trends that peak in the first year. People are now killed by everything, from cell phones, washing machines, lawn mowers and toothpicks, to the boundless catalog of man–made medicines. In FINAL EXITS the causes of death–bizarre or common–are alphabetically arranged and include actual accounts of people, both famous and ordinary, who unfortunately died that way. (Ants, bad words, Bingo, bean bag chairs, flying cows, frozen toilets, hiccups, lipstick, moray eels, road kill, starfish, and toupees are only some of the more unusual causes.)

Take with a large grain of salt!.......2007-09-28
1. Bobby Darin died due to problems with his artificial heart valve - not snorting cocaine (p. 253)
2. Flesh-eating virus - concerns necrosis caused bacteria/bacterial toxins - not viruses - the author seems to interchange organisms at whim (p. 143)
3. Howard Hughes died with numerous hypodermic needles in his body - not syringes! (p. 85)
I have never written a review before but this book cries out for help. While an interesting premise, the research/information is questionable in more than a few places. While the book has sources and a bibliography, they apparently weren't "over used"!
Take "most" of this with a "large grain of salt" and be amused.
I hope the "new book" The Portable Obituary: How the Famous, Rich, and Powerful Really Died (which I will buy and read in fairness to the author) is better researched/edited.
This book was a fun read!.......2007-07-19
This book was very enjoyable. Its funny how strange human history is. I even was speaking with my husband on how bad the world has become, my husband's reply was simply "It's always been this bad." After reading this book, I would have to agree. I'm glad I live in the 21st century, because centuries of the past really seemed to suck! Read this book and you will know what I mean.
final exits: the illustrated encyclopedia of how we die.......2007-06-08
This is a great book. It is a little macabe, but that works for us. My children 9 and 13 love the book too. If you have ever wondered just how many deaths occur at amusement parks(including Disneyland) this is the book for you. Did you know if you paint your body all over with metallic paint, you can die, just like in the James Bond movie. If you have heard of a story of how people die( such as a date with a prostitute ended with a missing organ such as a kidney) you can look it up ( This unlawful organ harvesting never happened)
Awesome Book.......2007-03-09
I am a medicolegal death investigator for a medical examiner's office, and this book is awesome. It is very informative and entertaining. Four of my co-workers also bought this book, and I bought one for my grandmother.
fabulous book, but could use a proofreader!.......2007-03-04
This book was nasty and fun, and I loved it--I really did. It was stuffed with more fascinating, morbid factoids than I can count, and I had a blast reading it (as well as sharing some of the more gruesome tidbits with my unenthusiastic friends). The only thing preventing me from giving it five stars is the fact that it had loads of typos.
Granted, I'm an editor by trade, so I do tend to be overly nit-picky when reading. To that extent, I'm willing to forgive some of the inproper commas and unnecessary hyphens (which were probably caused by text reflowing during the editing process). Especially since, I'll be the first to admit, no one is perfect and mistakes happen. Typos slip through the cracks--it's a fact of life. But this book had more than just the occasional wayward comma, and this proved to be a bit distracting to me. Some examples include "heath tip" instead of "health tip," "Edinborough" instead of "Edinburgh," "serve electrolyte imbalance" instead of "severe electrolyte imbalance," "Los Angles" instead of "Los Angeles," John Lennon's death year was listed as 1979 instead of 1980, etc.
Other than that, it's a terrific book!

Book Description
Introducing an incredible new voice in romantic suspense.
Ten years ago tragedy tore them apart . . .
But when FBI special agent Carolyn Monahan walks back into the life of homicide lieutenant Conor Rafferty, the sizzle is undeniable. They are back together, albeit reluctantly, to find the serial killer who is terrorizing Boston.
Caro has made a successful career of putting homicidal maniacs behind bars, and Rafferty is a good cop who's been handed the case of a lifetime. Amid bureaucratic red tape and a mounting body count, they uncover evidence that points to a decade-old unsolved homicide. The tension escalates when the killer develops a psychotic preoccupation with Caro herself.
As the pressure builds to solve the murders, so does the attraction between Caro and Rafferty. But the question remains: Who will get to Caro first, the killer or the cop?
Customer Reviews:
More of what a romantic suspense book should be.......2005-06-19
This was my first Laurie Breton book. I have to say it was very good. It had a couple decent twists and even a surprise ending. My only problem with the book was her excessive wordiness to constantly interrupt dialogue with actions as if it were a screen play and we needed to know the blow by blow of what the characters did with their hands.
The book was about a serial killer, yet we only had one actual look at how the killer worked and only one victim's body. Therefore it lacked a little of the intensity and fear that a serial thriller may have. Nevertheless, the attraction between the two characters was not immediate in the sense that the reader could feel the emotion, but built quickly and only got intense from there.
All in all, I think the author has potential and I hope to read more of her books.
Final Exit.......2004-06-19
This book was incredible. The characters were real, the heroine had depth. It was a great thriller, with just enough romance. I love this author and after I read this book I went on line to find anything else she had written.
Entertaining Suspense.......2003-12-27
Laurie Breton's first work of romantic suspense successfully emphasizes the suspense of the story, providing an engaging serial killer chiller.
FBI agent Carolyn Monahan heads up a task force to catch a serial killer terrorizing Boston, sometimes called Mr. X. However the lead detective on the case Lietenant Conor Rafferty shares a steamy past with Monahan. Putting their attraction aside, they work together to find and apprehend the killer.
The suspense builds when the team discovers the killer is targeting Carolyn specifically. She and Rafferty's torrid relationship while trying to dodge a killer does provide some entertainment. However, the steamy scenes slow down and detract from the story as a whole.
A wonderful first novel. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Breton.
great beach read!.......2003-06-10
i picked up this book to read on the beach this summer and was surprised with how much i enjoyed it! its a great summertime book and was easy to read- the pace of the book moved right along and kept my attention.
the heroine is carolyn, an fbi profiler, who has her own past tragedy when her sister was murdered. carolyn has always felt guilty about her sister's death and broke up with her then boyfriend conor to run away to boston. She returns years later to help the local police catch a serial killer- and Conor is in charge of the police investigation. Of course both are drawn to each other again. in the midst of the investigation, it is discovered that the killer has a personal connection with carolyn.
The book has a great ending and the subplot of the love story between the two characters is interesting and makes the novel fun to read. A++
Great book!.......2003-05-22
Excellent suspense and plot development. The relationship between Caro and Conor was heartbreaking at times and heart pumping at others. This is a wonderful first book and I will definitely be looking for more from this writer!

This book worked just fine for dear old Dad.......1998-07-21
I'm reluctant to recommend this book. Obviously it worked just fine for my depressed father. He left suicide notes behind indicating that he believed he had malignant tumors all over his colon. The medical examiner never saw a trace of them. I never found evidence of such in his previous medical records (which were in meticulous order). However the M.E. cited the exact pages of Final Exit which Dad used to do himself in. And yes, it was right up on Dad's shelf. Sure, he had the right. I don't believe that he really believed he was sick - not physically, anyway. I've missed him for years now. I know for a fact that Dad was clinically depressed. I thought he was continuing with treatment. Yeah, the book told him everything he needed to know about saving valium and covering his head with a bag. Now those of us who were left behind get to live with the consequences. Best of all, even though I tell my children that we find this behavior unacceptable I've a fathe! r who demonstrated otherwise. "Bye-bye, Grandad". If you HAVE to do it, fine; get the book and find what you need to know. If the pain is psychological in nature and so great, please seek out help.
This is an exceedingly boring book.......1998-06-27
It will be quite hard to find a book as useless as this one. Mr. Humphrey discussed a list of methods to commit suicide - and his favorite methods invariably include exotic medication that in real world no reader is able to get, or physical activity only he himself considers painless. I can appreciate his promotion of the right to die, but I have serious doubts about the advise he gives in this book. Many suggestions show a total lack of medical knowledge.
Primitive Overview of Methods to Commit Suicide.......1998-01-12
A rather boring book with primitive methods to commit suicide. Although some people will be successful at killing themselves with the guidelines in this book, a lot of people will probably still botch their attempt at killing themselves.

Final Exit (Third Edition): The Practicalities of Self-Deliverance and Assisted Suicide for the Dying
ASIN: 0963728032 |
Book Description
This little book is a supplement, or an 'add-on' to the main volume "Final Exit: The Practicalities of Self-Deliverance and Assisted Suicide for the Dying". It does not replace what has become the standard textbook on euthanasia, just brings it up to date politically, legally, and ethically.
Of considerable interest to readers will be the explicit chapter on how to take one's life with HELIUM GAS if suffering unbearbly at the end of life. This is a new development, and made important by the clamp-down by all Western governments on the prescribing of barbiturates by doctors.
Customer Reviews:
Has excellent section on Helium.......2002-12-03
As one of the people who developed the practical use of Helium for the purpose of final exit, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. You can get it as a part of the Two-book volume, "Let Me Die Before I Wake & Supplement to Final Exit".
For those who are terminally ill and seeking the means to a relatively dignified end to their suffering, without the support or help of a doctor, this supplement is for you. Follow the advice it gives VERY carefully, and if possible, have a loved one sit by to observe and give emotional support. It is not as simple a means as you might think. But if you follow Derek Humphry's procedure carefully, it is likely that it will be a straightforward, sure, relatively painless, and relatively quick exit from the suffering of terminal disease.
This book is now out of print -- the author.......2002-05-05
"Supplement to Final Exit" is now out of print. BUT
a newer version (2002) is available in the 'double-book"
"Let Me Die Before I Wake & Supplement to Final Exit" By Derek Humphry...
Final Exit Supplement: Crucial information.......2000-10-27
This book is crucial to the terminally ill whose suffering has stolen their capacity to experience joy and whose pain could continue for months or years without this brave author's writings. The book is wise and practical. Never judge another until you have walked in their shoes. Innocent victims of agonizing, terminal illnesses deserve this information. They deserve peace.

funny.......2001-12-10
My brother and I fell on the ground laughing hysterically at the illustrations and captions--although this was 9 years ago
we still get a good laugh out of it. We almost got kicked out of the bookstore for disturbing the others.
Very funny - not for the mentally unbalanced, though........1999-11-23
As a life-long cat LOVER, I was suprised to find myself laughing hysterically at nearly every page in this book. The pictures and the light-hearted text are too cute and silly to be taken as malicious. The best advice - wait.
Wahoo! GREAT book!.......1998-08-24
I got this book up at a used book store, I love it! It's hilarious, and I have to keep telling my mom not to let our siamese cat see it. It's one of my 3 books I always have on hand, and I read it all the time. My fave exits are turkey and microwave. Makes a good coffee table book, and a good gift, cat-lover or cat-hater. Just DON'T get any ideas! Have fun!

Alternative futures..........2004-07-24
Robert Lee Hall is author of many tales of the real historical figure, Benjamin Franklin, cast in a new light, as a Holmes-like detective in London of his day. It therefore makes sense that, like many authors, Robert Lee Hall turned his hand to an alternative Sherlock Holmes tale, doing the turnabout of weaving the fictional character into real historical events.
Sherlock Holmes is one of the best known detectives in the world -- so famous in fact, that 221B Baker Street in London continues to get mail adddressed to this fictional character almost a century after he would have died had he been a real person. There are groups of people -- Sherlockians and Holmesians, the distinction between which is rather subtle -- who delight in retelling the tales; it has become somewhat traditional to try to fill in the gaps, things left out of the 'canonical' stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- 56 short stories and 4 novels. The official tales allude to happenings beyond them -- some authors take up the point there, and others create fanciful tales altogether.
This tale by Hall creates an alternative ending to Holmes. Conan Doyle tried to kill off Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls, and later resurrected him in an ingenious way. Hall has here resurrected Holmes' arch-enemy in a similar fashion, to return to become a problem not only to London through his criminal activities, but this time to threaten the world.
Hall does what many post-Conan Doyle writers do -- he takes the minor characters and side-bars from the canonical stories and develops them in greater detail. Here we have much more information about Moriarity, just who he is and what his intentions are. We are also introduced to Holmes' mysterious (and often described as smarter) brother Mycroft. Like the much-better known 'Seven-Percent Solution', it gives intriguing alternative theories to just what the relationships are; unlike the other novel, the trouble is not all in Sherlock Holmes' mind.
One of the interesting ideas advanced here is that Holmes did not in fact carry out his final cases, but that these were done by others (most especially Wiggins, developed here as a full character, much more than the canonical bit-player as leader of the Baker Street Irregulars); Hall also carries the fiction that Conan Doyle was the literary agent of a 'real' Dr. Watson.
There is a bit of science fiction here as well, which explains how Moriarty and Holmes are so evenly matched. Watson is introduced ahead of its time to concepts such as test-tube babies and modern technological achievements; Holmes' attempts to stop the first world war prove to be futile, but Watson, Wiggins and others manage to make the conflict not as devasting as it might have been, we are led to believe. But how does this all fit with Moriarty and Holmes?
P.D. James praised this book, as did the Times Literary Supplement. It is worthy of praise, and worthy of inclusion in the post-Conan Doyle Holmesian literary corpus.
Sherlock Holmes mixed with Sci Fi- Way ahead of its time.......2002-01-31
Exit Sherlock Holmes was the first Non-Doyle Sherlock Holmes book I ever read, so I naturally have fond memories of it. However, reading it again I was surprised at how well it held up after all those years.
The villain is Moriarty, but not the Moriarty you'd expect. Watson points out that the only other time he saw the Professor was on the back of a speeding train and he didn't get a good look at him. That becomes very important in this novel.
I could tell you more but it would give away major plot points. Let me say that this book is more relevant today than it was in the seventies, when it was written. Mister Hall did a great job using Watson's "voice" and Doctor Doyles style of writing, something missing from many Holmes stories of late.
Return to 1895, where people are not what they've seemed to be and others are not who they've claimed to be. You'll be glad you did!
