Book Description

A man is shot dead as he runs to catch the bus in the piazza of a small Sicilian town. Captain Bellodi, the detective on the case, is new to his job and determined to prove himself. Bellodi suspects the Mafia, and his suspicions grow when he finds himself up against an apparently unbreachable wall of silence. A surprise turn puts him on the track of a series of nasty crimes. But all the while Bellodi's investigation is being carefully monitored by a host of observers, near and far. They share a single concern: to keep the truth from coming out.

This short, beautifully paced novel is a mesmerizing description of the Mafia at work.

4 out of 5 stars Darkness at Noon.......2007-08-23

Leonard Sciascia's Sicily is a dark place, even while it basks under a hot noonday sun. In "The Day of the Owl", Sciascia's native Sicily (he was born in Racalmuto, Sicily in 1921) is a place where there is crime but no punishment, at least no official punishment. Sciascia's Sicily is a place where the code of silence trumps the penal code and where crimes are seen by all and witnessed by none. In Sciascia's Sicily the mafia enjoys such a symbiotic relationship with the local and federal power elite that they are effectively an independent if unacknowledged branch of government. This is not fertile ground for a detective investigating a murder but very fertile ground for a writer such as Sciascia.

"Day of the Owl" opens with a murder. A local building contractor is shot down with a sawn-off shotgun as he runs for a bus on Saturday morning. Captain Bellodi, recently arrived from the mainland, is assigned the case. Since a sawn-off shotgun is the typical instrument of mafia-ordered murders Bellodi's inclination is to look for an organized crime link. It doesn't take long for Bellodi to figure out the motive behind the murder, the identity of the murderer, and the identity of the man who ordered the murder. But knowledge alone does not equate to evidence and as the story progresses we see Bellodi painstakingly and diligently obtain the evidence necessary to indict the perpetrators. Bellodi's task is not an easy one. In addition to the wall of silence that meets him as he begins his investigation, his status as a fair-haired mainlander marks him as even more of an outsider.

Sciascia takes a multi-layered approach to telling his story. His narrative of the crime and investigation is straightforward, terse, and engaging. At the same time we are provided a glimpse into Sicily through the eyes of a newcomer, Bellodi. Bellodi the pale northerner is transformed during this book. He is at once horrified by the corruption and the code of silence that thwarts him every step of the way. At the same time we see him discover something else in this place that he finds irresistible. This evolution reaches a climax when Bellodi interrogates the mafia Don he believes to be responsible for a cold-blooded killing. There comes a point where the Don refers to Bellodi as a `real man'. There is a lot of meaning invested in that remark and Bellodi is transfixed by it. Bellodi is drawn to Sicily the way someone may be drawn to a dangerous lover. You go into the relationship knowing it will be stormy and dangerous but it is irresistible. I couldn't help but think that Bellodi and "Day of the Owl" was a great vehicle through which Sciascia could explore his own strong feelings for his native place.

Leonardo Sciascia's "Day of the Owl" is a fascinating book on many levels. It works as a good piece of detective fiction and also works well as a keen and loving (warts and all) look at life in Sicily in the 1960s. 4.5 stars. Highly recommended. L. Fleisig

If you enjoy "The Day of the Owl" you will also probably enjoy Equal Danger (New York Review Books Classics).

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars........2007-06-19

a good, solid police procedural. here and there some fine writing. very little character development, but neither do the characters seem shallow or unconvincing. if you are from, or familiar with sicily (which i am not), you will probably like this more than i did. obscure references like "the chiarchiaro of gramoli," or "how many hectares d'you own?" "twenty-two salme and... let's call in ninety hectares," might mean something to you. they simply baffled me. anyway, if you like police procedurals, you will most likely get into this. the politics and mafia intrigue of sicily lays heavily on this story, and serves it well. nothing wrong here. it is just not a masterpiece. not by a long shot.

5 out of 5 stars Crime Novel with Socila dn Political Roots.......2005-07-21

A great crime novel with deep social and political roots. It is a captivating crime investigtion novel that opens up a fascinating political and social universe in Sicily with its roots extending to the highest political levels.

4 out of 5 stars The Original Mob Story.......2005-04-26

Imagine a time before the Sopranos, before the Godfather, and before Mario Puzo. The mafia, particularly in Italy, was virtually virgin territory in literature - no one dared write about it. Leonardo Sciascia (pronounced "Sha-Sha") was one of the first to break the code of silence.

In the Day of the Owl -- a short, quick read that provides an excellent snapshot of a Sicilian village in the mid-20th century -- Sciascia transplants to unruly Sicily a northern Italian police inspector who has too much integrity to look the other way when a man is shot dead at dawn in a Siclian piazza. Witnesses quickly disavow that they saw anything at all, but rumors begin to circulate. Our hero, Captain Bellodi, is determined to see the assassin punished. But the closer he gets to the truth, the higher the intervention from "His Excellency" and other well-placed members of society.

Sciascia's genius in the Day of the Owl is his subtle description of how the "so-called" mafia manages to keep its operations quiet, ranging from eliminating those who may speak up to using faulty logic to allow for plausible deniability. Can you honestly believe, one mafiosi asks the captain, that an organization so vast, so organized and so powerful can actually exist? Would the police not be able to discover and dismantle such an organization? Would there not be public testimony in court cases? The mafia is clearly just a rumor.

Sciascia's characters are strong, particularly fish-out-of-water Bellodi. On leave in his native Parma, Bellodi considers abandoning what he fears is a futile assignment in Sicily. He quickly decides to return, recognizing that Sicily has won him over, just as the Day of the Owl will win over the reader.

Equal Dangers is a must read for anyone interested in the culture of the post world war two European societies. This book is a great reflection on the difficulties a society (Italy) had in re-constituting itself. Sciascia accomplishes this in such an intersting, "murder mystery" type of way that makes this book a real page turner.

              Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens has created some of romance's most unforgettable novels. Now she has created her most provocative love story—and amazing hero—to date. This is the book that dares to ask the question: Who is this man's ideal bride?

Michael Anstruther-Wetherby is a rising member of Parliament—a man destined for power. Aristocratic, elegant, and effortlessly charming, he is just arrogant enough to capture the interest of the ladies of the ton. And with his connections to the wealthy and influential Cynster family—his sister is married to Devil Cynster, the Duke of St. Ives—his future appears assured.

Except that Michael lacks the single most important element of success: a wife.

Political pressure sends him searching for his ideal bride, a gently bred, malleable young lady, preferably one with a political background. Michael discovers such a paragon but finds a formidable obstacle in his path—the young lady's beautiful, strong-minded aunt—Caroline Sutcliffe.

One of London's foremost diplomatic hostesses, Caro has style and status but, having lived through an unhappy political marriage, wants nothing of the sort for her niece, who has already lost her heart to another.

So Caro and the younger woman hatch a plot—Caro will demonstrate why an inexperienced young lady is not the bride for Michael. She succeeds in convincing him that what he really needs is a lady of experience by his side.

And the perfect candidate is right under his nose—Caro herself. Then it is Michael's turn to be persuasive, a task that requires every ounce of his seductive charm as he tempts and tantalizes Caro, seeking to convince her that becoming his bride will bring her all her heart desires . . . and more.

But then a series of mysterious, and dangerous, accidents befall Caro—an assailant has stepped in with their own idea for Caro's future—one that could involve murder. Before Caro can become Michael's ideal bride, they must race to uncover the unknown's identity before all hope of what they long for, and wish for, is destroyed.

2 out of 5 stars Not my type of romance.......2007-07-10

I thought this romance was boring and predictable. The characters were hard to care about, and there was a lot of gratuitous sex. I had to make myself finish this book , which is never a good sign.

4 out of 5 stars The Magic of Love.......2007-03-13

Wonderful characters, and excellant plot. I have been reading Ms. Laurens books since I discovered them. I only have one complaint; I wish she didn't have so many female characters who show haughty looks by raising their chins in the air. There surely must be another way for such a talented author to write this haughty feeling of her characters.

4 out of 5 stars Mediocre Laurens fare.......2006-08-31

I am a big fan of Stephanie Laurens' but this book was just OK. The political talk and positioning got boring after a while but what I really objected to was the lame reason that was given for the fact that the main character was a virgin widow (her first husband, much older, decided that he could never satisfy her so he didn't make the attempt - even though he kept a mistress on the side!). Why did Laurens make her a virgin? If she felt she had to, then why not make up a better excuse (e.g. he wanted to keep her perfect with the rest of the antiques in his town house, or he was physically incapable at his age, or he had a STD and didn't want to taint her).

She therefore doesn't think she has sex appeal but this issue is only alluded to but never really hashed out. It would have been better if the hero had reassured her verbally instead of just being randy all the time.

It's not a bad book, better than most other regency romances out there but not Stephanie Laurens' best effort.

2 out of 5 stars Kind of Disappointing.......2006-04-21

This is the 11th in the Cynster series and is Michael Anstruther Wetherby's story. He is the brother of Honoria, Duchess of St. Ives (Devil's Bride)

Michael is in politics and needs a bride to further his career. He decides to marry a suitable young woman and when he goes to pursue her, he falls for her aunt instead. The aunt, Caro, is a young widow who was married to another man in politics. Sparks fly and the relationship takes off, but she is hesitant to marry because she is afraid he wants her for her political savy. There is also someone unknown person trying to kill her. The problem with this book is it is just plain boring. I don't know how to explain it but it just doesn't keep you involved. I continued reading it because I enjoy the Cynster series. If this was your first of Stephanie Lauren's books you pick up, you probably won't buy another, so try another one instead.

If you are interested these are the books in the series so far:

              1. Devil's Bride
              2. A Rake's Vow (Vane Cynster)

5 out of 5 stars No one does it better than Stephanie Laurens!.......2006-01-05

Laurens is the reason I read historical romance - I found her Cynster series several years ago and keep trying to find anything to equal it - I have never found anything to equal Laurens or this series. The reviews here for this book are mixed, I guess if you do not appreciate the style of Laurens you might find this book slow but for me it is so necessary for the story Laurens is trying to tell. She wants you to understand each and every feeling of Michael and Caro - she wants you to understand why they are reacting to each other on a day to day hour to hour basis. This was absolutely a beautiful romance. No words that I could write here would convey how much I enjoyed and appreciated this book. Michael I thought might be a little stuffy since he is not a Cynster rouge type. However, Michael is beyond discription the way he truly begins to understand what kind of perfect woman Caro would be for him both personally and politically. He sets out on a pace of seduction and romance that might be unequaled in the many books I have read. The passion between Caro and Michael is unequaled - I truly could not believe how powerful and hot these scenes were without in any way coming off as just lust. And the emotions between Michael and Caro - has there ever been a more perfect couple? Noone could write a book, that goes sometimes hour by hour day by day and not have it come off as tedious but Stephanie Laurens. Caro had so many reasons to be doubtful and fearful of giving her heart to Michael. Michael until Caro, never really thought he could become like all of his Cynster inlaws and fall under the spell of a woman. How they both will discover they were so wrong. Truly if you are a absolute lover of the Cynster series and Lauren's work - I believe you will see as I do, the Ideal Bride - is indeed an Ideal read!!

4 out of 5 stars His bride list.......2005-01-11

Georgeous and wealthy businessman Gabriel Carr has decided to marry but hates the giddy females who fawn over his striking looks. He wants a wife who sees more in him than his looks, so he draws up a list of requirements for his ideal bride. He wants his bride to be of the merchant class and definitely not the aristocracy; therefore he asks his merchant tenants to introduce him to suitable young women. When he meets Lady Nola Grenvale, pandemonium breaks lose.

This is an absolutely delightful book. I laughed out loud frequently at the absurd situations and the secondary characters. Ms. St.George has created wonderfully witty dialogue. I highly recommend this book to lift your spirits and will look forward to reading the next book about Gabriel's friend the Duke of St.Fell.

2 out of 5 stars I was really prepared to love this book.......2004-08-21

After reading the stellar reviews, I had no doubt that I would just love this book. Even though I was dying to read it as soon as I got it, I saved it for a plane ride because I knew I would be so absorbed in it that the flight would just "fly by" (get it? ha ha).

Imagine my disappointment when 2/3 into the book, I realized that I just wasn't loving it. In fact, I wasn't even liking it too much. I never finished the book.

I will agree with all the previous reviewers who stated that this book has some screwball comedic episodes. Page one had me hooked (or so I thought). A devastatingly attractive man who makes a concerted effort to not look so attractive. A down-to-earth do-good heroine. I started out liking these characters and enjoying their most amusing meetings.

What really turned me off eventually was that there was absolutely no character development whatsoever. These people, while likable in the beginning, were never really portrayed as anything more than just flat characters. I felt towards them by page 120 the exact same way I felt for them at page 1--that is to say, not much. I did not sympathize with or care for any of them. They didn't seem real to me AT ALL and the feelings between them did not ring true or sincere.

I finally got totally fed up when I realized that the "sensible" heroine was truly falling in love with the hero purely because of his dimples. It never really went beyond that.

Overall, I found the book pretty shallow. And by that, I mean there was no depth to it. No depth to the characters, no depth to their feelings. I read 3-5 regency romances a week, so I don't require too much depth, but this one was lacking in ANY. It became annoying and frustrating to read and I just could not bring myself to finish it.

                5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2004-07-04

I never read the short Regency romances because they are usually too prim for me, but my aunt told me that this book was different.

This author really knows how to make me laugh. Her characters are so fun and vivid I am surprised she is not writing the long Regency romances (the kind I LOVE!)

I just ordered her next book and if it is anything like this delight, I will be smiling all night long.

                3 out of 5 stars Cute, quick-read.......2004-05-30

This novel is a very simple, easy read, yet also contains important valuable life lessons. This book accurately portrays the ups and downs of romance and the essentiality of compromise in a successful relationship. Although the theme of the book was enjoyable I found many parts supericial and lacking in depth. Concerning Nola and Gabriel Carr, the transition from annoyance and irratation to "falling in love" is very abrupt and rushed. One minute they couldnt tolerate each other and the next they cant stop thinking of each other. It did not seem realistic because they hadnt really gotten to know each other well. Yet overall an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars A great new talent has arrived!.......2004-05-16

I used to read every Regency that came out; however, the rapidly decreasing quality of new books in this genre has made me more selective in recent years. My favorites have always been the lighthearted romps such as those penned by Barbara Metzger. Nonnie St. George exhibits the same type of comedic talent here. Frankly, I was so engrossed in laughing my way through the book that I didn't even notice the little errors in historical accuracy that normally disrupt my reading pleasure.

Normally I wouldn't think much of a hero who is so obviously aware of his good-looking appearance that he expects women to fall all over him and takes offense if they don't. Nor do his frequent references to the heroine's flat chest and her other inadequacies make him a likable character. In the beginning, his friend the Duke seems a much a better potential hero.

But even at his first meeting with "Saint Nola," the earl's daughter who has dedicted herself to helping the war widows, Gabriel undergoes a curious sort of transformation that everyone sees except him (and perhaps Nola herself). Even as he emphatically denies that she could ever be a candidate for the "ideal bride" he seeks, he finds himself thinking about her constantly. . . and enjoying her company far too well.

Is it because she is the first woman who shown no interest in attracting him? Or because she proves herself to be a highly capable woman and one who is sincerely committed to helping the needy? Or is it because his mother, his best friend, her brother and two aunts, the servants, his tenants and business partners--and the entire ton, it turns out--are conspiring to throw them together for a walk down the aisle.

Even after he finally admits to himself that he loves Nola and wants to marry her, he tries to find a way to "save face." The whole world knows about his requirements for his "ideal bride." If he marries Nola, who is practically the antithesis, he would be a laughingstock among the ton. So he devises a way to "compromise" Nola into marriage. No one would ridicule him for doing the honorable thing, after all.

When that fails, and his mother begins rounding up potential husbands for Nola, Gabriel's next move is to propose to Nola and ask her to keep it quiet for a month or so until the ton becomes obsessed by some other scandal. But Nola refuses his offer, even after he confesses his love for her (which should have come BEFORE the proposal of marriage). Even after he finally agrees to lease her the warehouse she wants for her war widows bazaar.

Nola, you see, already loves him--she did notice his handsome appearance after all--but she is well aware that she has been practically pushed into his arms by all the well-meaning matchmakers, and she knows that she lacks the qualifications for the "ideal bride" he was seeking. Marrying her would just make them both unhappy.

It becomes a matter of Gabriel having to choose between his pride and a life with the woman he loves, and realizes that there is really only one choice to be made.

At that point, the transformation from arrogant jerk to romantic hero is complete, and the reader is left with the feeling that all is right in the world and that every minute spent reading this book was time well spent.
