Just a bit of information.......2007-08-24
Chronologically, this is actually book 9--the events here occur between Hunting the Hunter and Hunter's Salvation.
Also, disregard Harriet's review--what she says is not correct about the stories. They are not reprints and she summarizes them incorrectly.
The Hunters.......2007-08-20
Hunter's Salvation (The Hunters, Book 10)The Hunters: Interlude (Books 3 & 4)Legends: Hunters and Heroes (The Hunters, Book 7)
Interesting..........2007-06-30
HUNTERS: HEART AND SOUL is essentially one story with two romances, divided into two separate sections. In "Soul of a Hunter", the plot focuses on Leandra and Mike. For over 5 years, Leandra has been haunted by her past. Leandra had fought as a member of Scythe against the Hunters, not realizing that she was fighting on the wrong side. No one blames Leandra more than Leandra herself. Will Mike's love be enough when danger strikes?
"Heart of a Hunter" picks up right where "Soul of a Hunter" concludes, but from the perspective of Kelsey and Malachi. Leandra encourages Kelsey to talk to the Council's captive and it is only then that Kelsey recognizes what has occurred. Determined to stop the Council's execution order, she seeks out Malachi. Will Malachi's anger over the recent events blind him to what Kelsey has to say? And what will become of the powerful attraction between them?
Shiloh Walker takes a very unusual approach with HUNTERS: HEART AND SOUL. Broken into two parts, "Soul of a Hunter" and "Heart of a Hunter" are essentially two very hot romances and yet the ongoing thread between the storylines makes them basically one story. The stories must be read in the right order due to the ongoing thread that links the stories together, but to reveal more about this thread would be a spoiler.
"Soul of a Hunter" will probably be better appreciated by fans of Ms. Walker's Hunters series as it jumps rather quickly into the midst of the plot. While I have read HUNTING THE HUNTER, I haven't read any of the other Hunter books and initially was a bit confused as it almost felt as if I'd missed a previous episode. However, as the story progresses and the action begins to kick in, the plot begins to coalesce just a bit.
With "Heart of a Hunter", the true genius of Shiloh Walker begins to shine. The plot moves along rapidly as all of the pieces begin to come together. While I wasn't overly enthusiastic about "Soul of a Hunter", the series of events is necessary for "Heart of a Hunter" to even occur. In some ways, HUNTERS: HEART AND SOUL is really the story of the Hunters as a whole, as events occur that will surely impact them all. There are some dangling threads that remain unresolved and one expects that these threads will be picked up in the next book in this series.
Shiloh Walker has obviously spent a great deal of time in crafting the world of the Hunters. The premise is absolutely brilliant and overall I enjoyed this book. Perhaps a brief introduction or recap at the beginning of the book would have resolved some of my initial confusion and helped ease me into this very complex world.

Thank you Shiloh!.......2007-05-19
I have been waiting for Malachi and Leandra forever and I was not disappointed. Maybe Mike and Leandra could have ended alittle better but...
I am SOOOO happy she did not wimp out Leandra or Kelsy. Shiloh is one the few authors who can write a lead fem with stregnth and angst without all the weak female whinning[..]. Adding coffee to the cream with Mike and Leandra was wonderful. So rarely do we get to see interracial relationships in this genre and Shiloh keeps my sista girl strong and true even with all of her emotional baggage and keeps the sexy HOT HOT HOT. I loved how Mike held his ground with her.
Malachi is as Malachi does and I was not disappointed. It was a GREAT story with all the sexual tension...and release so many of us crave.
It was worth the wait for me.
Fantastic!.......2007-05-12
Great read, it is a terric ongoing story from the Hunters series. If you like paranormal crime fighting an romance you will love this story!

Good Reading but some light to medium S&M..just be prepared! .......2007-06-01
This was a good read of three different stories. Very good for short stories! I'd definitely read something from these writers again!
Totally HOT and a good read.......2007-02-27
After reading an excerpt in Comso mag I knew I had to check this book out. To be honest I must admit i was very surprised that the stories more or less involved S&M. Though I do not find that very arousing the stories in themself are very well written. The descripions very beautifully written that i couldnt help but enjoy each story. I think i check out some other books in Ellora's Cave.
All I want is more!.......2007-02-07
Adam & Evil - by Jaid Black - Julia wants nothing to do with Sam Adam, the man her father has chosen for her to marry. But when their plane crashes on a deserted island, she discovers that first impressions aren't always what they seem.
Holly - by Dominique Adair - After meeting Holly in the French Quarter a year ago, Ethan has finally found his opening into her life. He will have 3 days to convince her that his love can heal her, if only she is willing to let him into her heart.
His Christmas Cara - by Shiloh Walker - Eben Marley is haunted by his memories of a woman from his past, but it takes 3 determined spirits to make him realize that he has enough love in his heart to win her forgiveness.
These 3 novellas are written by 3 of my favorite Ellora's Cave authors. I have been waiting for a while for 2 of them to be released in print, and could not be happier that they were released together in this anthology. All 3 of these can be found seperately in e-book format on the Ellora's Cave website.
I absolutely LOVED these stories, and this book (like most Ellora's Cave titles at my house) has found a permanent spot on my keeper shelf. All 3 novellas are very steamy and in the case of the Adair title, also lovingly tender. The Adair story was my favorite of the three, but be warned: "It does contain one scene of non-consensual bondage that may be considered disturbing to some readers." The hero of the story does not have a part in this scene, but the reader is shown why Holly needs to be healed emotionally. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys erotic romance. 5 Stars!
Save Your Money.......2007-01-24
I love Jaid Black's and Shiloh Walker's writing but this anthology went right to the book store for trade-in credit...And I keep most of my books.
It was okay, but nothing special. Hate to say that, since as a newspaper writer I realize your stories are like your children: NO ONE better mess with my Baby/Story :) But the truth shall set you free. Wait and get this one from the used bookstore or here at Amazon if you wanta pay the shipping and handling.
Shiloh Walker's story was the best and it was a nice turn on the Ghosts of Christmas Present, Christmas Past and Christmas Future. That said, still not worth full price.

In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By mirroring the troops' movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier's mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author's vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a pivotal battle in American history.
Book Description
This fictional re-creation of the battle of Shiloh in April 1862 fulfills the standard set by his monumental history, conveying both the bloody choreography of two armies and the movements of the combatants' hearts and minds.

Battle of Shiloh.......2007-10-09
The Battle of Shiloh was a major battle in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, fought on April 6 and April 7, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee. Confederate forces under Generals Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard launched a surprise attack against the Union Army of Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and came very close to defeating his army. This battle was also fought by other celebrity generals such as William T. Sherman and Nathan Bedford Forrest (OK, so he was a colonel, but who's splitting hairs here)
Shelby Foote's short novel really tells the story through many of the junior officers and enlisted. So do not be expecting a Michael Shaara type of insight into top leaders mind set. This is strictly what it is like at the bottom and experiencing the chaos of war. I rather enjoyed it, though sometimes for as short as it was, it still felt a tad long. That, however, was few and far between. By far my favorite scene was when one of the soldiers watched Col. Forrest get wounded among the sea of grey coats. Mainly of interest to Civil War buffs, but they will enjoy it immensely.
A Civil War Classic.......2007-09-09
Shelby Foote's Shiloh is a Civil War Classic. It is one of the absolute best novels of the American Civil War. Mr. Foote is able to capture not only the sense of the battle, but the spirit of the soldiers who fought there as well. It is not a detailed analysis of troop movements or tactics, but rather a study of the human condition and how it deals with the horrors of war as seen through the eyes of the soldiers. According to Mr. Foote, "A book about war, to be read by men, ought to tell what each of ..... us saw in our own little corner. Then it would be the way it was-not to God but to us." BUT TO US. And that is exactly how Mr. Shelby Foote wrote this book. As you read you will see, smell, taste, hear, and feel what the soldiers did, and experience both their glory and shame. A masterpiece.
No gratuitious language, sex or violence. Some of the battle scenes are graphic but that is war in all its uglyness.
Very highly recommended for anyone interested in war and soldiers; especially the Civil War. It is simply a very good book and a must for anyone interested in or studying the American Civil War.
In Fact or Fiction Foote Understands War Stories.......2007-06-24
Foote structures this novel brilliantly. Each narrator describes a different aspect of the battle, thereby providing readers with sense of what various soldiers' duties were during the engagement and how they responded to combat. The book also unfolds chronologically, so Foote provides us with the key strategy and major tactics used in the battle as well as the major points of conflict, including Shiloh Church, the Peach Orchard, The Hornet's Nest and the Fallen Timbers. It was especially interesting how he sometimes omits, or only vaguely references, other landmark events, such as the pounding of Union forces from Ruggles' Battery and the poignancy of Bloody Pond as a hellish haven in the battle. Maybe the 21st Century emphasis on these two icons of Shiloh is part of a contemporary way of thinking about the battle that wasn't as key to Foote's 1950s consciousness. Perhaps Foote effectively avoids being specific about some of these icons to make the point that ways we perceive the site are not necessarily how Civil War soldiers actually thought about the fracas. Another very subtle but effective technique that Foote uses is to interconnect each section told by the various narrators. We discover what happened to Fountain, for example, by reading another narrator's chapter, and attentive readers will discover clever ways that various narrators and characters encounter each other in the various accounts. Throughout the book, Foote's storytelling is superb. This novel mirrors the way veterans tell stories to each other. Part of the reason why veterans tell stories to each other relates to their interest in using other soldiers' accounts to come up with a better understanding of the entire experience. In this way, the line between storyteller and historian is blurred, and Foote, as a WW II veteran and fine writer, is a master at this creative, yet accurate and honest, approach to thinking about history.
The fog of war.......2007-05-23
Shelby Foote is best known for his authoritative 3 volume history of Civil War, but readers may not realize that he was equally adept at penning historical fiction. In Shiloh, he tells the story of the battle which took place April 6-7 1862 through the eyes of six participants, equally split between union and confederate. The novel builds slowly, but by the time you reach the crescendo of the battle, Foote's prose becomes so hauntingly descriptive and detailed that you feel as if you are there, and the rest of the novel flies by in a page-turning blur. At first I didn't think I was going to like the structure of the novel, because the 6 perspectives are only very loosely tied together with no transition in between, but after I read awhile I realized that the author used this particular story-telling device as a way to try to communicate a sense of the fog of war to the reader. You see events from the ground level, just as the characters do, and it's not until you finish the novel that you begin to get a complete picture of the battle. One of the narrators sums up this approach to history by commenting that "books about war were written to be read by God Almighty, because no one but God ever saw it that way. A book about war, to be read by men, ought to tell what each of the twelve of us saw in our own little corner. Then it would be the way it was - not to God but to us." Foote uses this technique with great effect, making this novel grippingly readable. While it's not the best Civil War novel I've read, it's certainly in the top 5. Shiloh is a must for Civil War buffs and Shelby Foote fans alike.
Great historical fiction.......2007-03-24
If one has read Foote's 3 volume history of the Civil War the quality of this book comes as no surprise. One of the amazing things about Foote's 3 volume history was the readability. It felt as if you were reading a novel. This novel is the other side of the coin. It feels as if the characters would have done and said exactly what Foote has them do. Even though the characters are fictionalized the events are covered with the same attention to factual detail as the best history. Each character in the book can only tell of their small part in this terrible battle but all the accounts are tied in to make the book very coherent. This is a great companion to the 3 volume history but can easily stand on its own.
Book Description
The most heartfelt book the Thoenes have written, Shiloh Autumn is an authentic and moving portrayal of the human spirit. Based on the lives of Bodie's own grandparents, this touching story mirrors the heartbreak and struggle of Depression-era America.

A very excellent book about a family durint the american depression. Anyone interested in American history would enjoy reading this and receive a lot of information about that period of american history.
great book.......2006-11-24
Great book. Enjoyed it very much. One of the best books I have ever read.
worth the $.......2006-10-20
i have been reading books by bodie and brock thoene since i was a junior in high school. now that i am a senior in college, i still enjoy rereading their older books and discovering their newer books. i believe it is safe to say that you can never go wrong when you choose to read any of their books.
what is especially interesting about this book is the tremendous amount of detail in it and the complexity of each and every character, from
"Caro-line" Jensen, to Jefferson and Willa-Mae Canfield, to Grandma Amos and even to little Joey Tucker.
and what blesses me even more is that, unlike other Christian or non-Christian authors, she does not compromise the name of Christ. in fact, faith in Jesus even with all the craziness that happens in the world (good and bad), is the whole point. that when one puts their faith in Jesus and tests it against everything good and bad in this life, it always proves itself true and strong ("Never will I leave you or forsake you"-Jesus the Christ). i always learn something new, historically and spiritually, when reading thoene books.
two thumbs up!
Fabulous Five Stars.......2006-09-07
This story is so wonderfully gripping. The back says it is based on the life of the authors family. As with all the Thoene books, this one is a hit and a stand-alone book, which is rare for these authors. A must read!
Add this keeper to your Home library!.......2002-10-02
Where do I begin? This book, as each and every one of The Thoene's are, had me feeling unusually emotional. I had goosebumps and tears. I laughed out loud. These authors are so addictive I have bought every series they have written. My husband does not care to read, so I buy the cassette tapes and we listen to them while driving on trips. The characters feel like your own friends. The style of writing is so engrossing that it's hard to get into other books after reading theirs. I find myself sad once I finish the book because I do not want it to end. It's like some friends of mine are gone. Everyone needs to read this series, but read "In My Father's house", before you read this, because it is a continuation of the Shiloh Legacy Series. You won't regret this reading, ENJOY! Megan
Book Description
There has been many novels written about the Civil War in the East. Now Dan Korn brings to life the incredible story of the western theater's first major battle, the titantic struggle between two massive ill-prepared armies as they met on the shore of the mighty Tennessee River at a lazy riverboat landing called Pittsburg Landing. Nestled in a glen not far from the water's edge was a sleepy house of worship, named Shiloh Meetinghouse. Shiloh means "place of peace." After the events of early April, 1862, Americans would never think of peace when they heard the name Shiloh ever again. As Dawn's Gray Steel opens, the South is reeling over the recent twin losses of the Tennessee forts Henry and Donelson, and the taking of the Tennessee capital, Nashville, by the thus far victorious western armies of the North. These victories have given the North a new hero in the form of a quiet and unassuming leader, Ulysses S. Grant. To the North, Grant has become "Unconditional Surrender " Grant. To end the string of Yankee victories, the Confederacy turns to the quixotic and charismatic Albert Sidney Johnston, a man some consider to be the greatest soldier in the Confederacy, and the man Jefferson Davis entrusts to save the Confederacy in the West. It will become Johnston's mission to end Grant's run. Victory has brought Grant fame, and with that fame comes a certain relaxed feeling in Grant that allows him to place his still relatively inexperienced Army of the Tennessee into camp along the Tennessee without taking many defensive precautions. It is this relaxed atmosphere that causes deep anxiety in one of Grant's newest division commanders, the cigar-chomping, wild-eyed William Tecumseh Sherman. Grant assures his new subordinate that Johnston would be crazy to attack the Union Army where they are. It is a mistake that Johnston is determined to make Grant regret. Johnston refuses to heed the advice of his own subordinates and decides to launch an all out attack against th

Book Description
The year is 1862, and war fever grips western Michigan. Former clerks and farmboys clamor to volunteer, certain that their weight will put an end to the Southern uprising. The yoke of responsibility made young James Lockett wise beyond his years, but his desire to follow his friends is too much for his cautious nature. James soon learns that there are three types of volunteers: adventurers, crusaders, and villains.
Chasing bushwhackers in Missouri, he discovers a talent for soldiering and another for finding enemies. At Fort Donelson, the boys from Kalamazoo discover that they must overcome the enemy inside of themselves. But neither the Plains of the Midwest nor the fortifications of Fort Donelson have prepared them for Grant's last stand at Shiloh.

Should win an award for "Best Civil War Novel".......2003-04-26
This book is very well written and the description of battle and encampment life is very accurate. I loved the beginning of the book, the Battle of Shiloh, and then the flash back to the prior 6 months. I had a hard time putting the book down, and the ending was brilliant. Bring on the sequel!
The boys from Kalamazoo.......2003-02-16
The Boys from Kalamazoo is a very good book. It provided a vivid description of what happened during the beginning of the Civil War. I am 12 years old and I was never interested in historical fiction until I read this book. I didn't think it was possible to like a type of book so much after reading it only once. My dad got this book for me and he read it too. T.J. Johnston is a very talented writer and I can't wait until he makes another book.
Quite vivid in its portrayal of a war-torn America.......2003-02-13
Set in 1862 during the American Civil War, The Boys from Kalamazoo by t. J. Johnston is a fictional account of the famous Kalamazoo Sharpshooters. Lending a vibrant freshness to a yesteryear world of American history peopled with the heroes, villains, ordinary soldiers, and citizenry who fought and died in the toils and turmoils of a bloody civil war, The Boys From Kalamazoo is entertaining, thoughtful, thought-provoking, and quite vivid in its portrayal of a war-torn America.
The Boys from Kalamazoo.......2003-01-29
Johnston covers the less historically focused Western Theater of the American Civil War with the same battle detail and accuracy as Bernard Cornwell covers the Eastern Theater in his Starbuck Chronicles. Johnston captures the true essence of the men that fought and suffered in the Civil War. As with all U.S. wars, ordinary young men who were farmers, shopkeeps, mill operators, etc... from small towns across the country like Kalamazoo, MI did extraordinary things. A great story set in accurate historical context, I hope there's a sequel!
Civil War Best Seller.......2003-01-26
Highly recommended! The book is well balanced providing interest for Civil War fanatics, and an enjoyable easy read for those just looking for a simple but action packed story. For historians, and Michiganders in particular, it provides an entertaining drama to supplement the factual course of events for this band of home grown sharpshooters. The battle scenes are brought to life without being overly gruesome and the fast paced action moves you quickly from event to event. It has the feel of a TV mini series and leaves you wanting to carry on with the next book - bring on the sequel!

Orphans with parents.......2007-07-16
The wildflowers follows 4 teenage girls who reveal a secret during a therapy session. Each secret becomes darker as the book progresses as each girl reveals how they have been betryed by their parents.
As a reader I was left thinking that Cat (the last girl to reveal her secret) has not only been betrayed by her parents but also by the councillor Dr Marlow, who has encouraged her to reveal a devastating secret to 3 other girls who have not experienced anything quite as bad as poor Cat.
It appears that Cat has been taken advantage of again, this time by Dr Marlow, who has used Cat as the ultimate "Well you think you got it bad?..." example that makes the other girls problems seem petty and insignificant.
Well, at least she seems to have made some friends out of it, but to this reader it did not seem credible that this girl would reveal such a secret to strangers unless they had shared stories more similar to her own. And shouldn't have Dr Marlow put Cat in a therapy session with others who could be more empathetic to her circumstances?
Ok, not great
Misty.......2006-07-27
Misty
A Review of the Book by V.C. Andrews
Laura Young
Misty, by V.C. Andrews, is about a young girl who is going to therapy to help ease the sting of her parents' divorce. Her therapist, Doctor Marlowe, suggests having a group therapy session with three other patients of hers. Misty reluctantly goes first and tells the small group of girls her life story. As she learns to open up to the girls and Dr. Marlowe, she learns the meaning of trust and emotion.
The reason I decided to read this book is because I read an excerpt on the author's website. I thought it sounded interesting and borrowed the book from the library, not fully knowing what to expect.
I believe teenage girls who have had emotional problems in their past could relate to Misty's struggles to find who she is. I know I understood a few of her problems. I know that I have been asked to take sides in fights before in my family, so I could kind of understand her emotions. She was confused with her life and I am too sometimes.
Misty was sounded like a normal teenager, which was good because the character came from a rich family and went to a fancier school than most, causing her to be a little smarter than a couple of the girls in the therapy circle. She relaxed a little bit once she started her story. I thought her character was going to be unlikable because she was a little snobby in the beginning of the book, but once she warmed up to the other girls she seemed less high maintenance than they thought she was.
The setting was beautifully described. It takes place at Dr. Marlowe's Beverly Hills home. It was described as a spacious home with a large office where the therapy group is in session. It sounded almost like a Barbie dream house, except better.
The main weakness of this story was that Misty would sometimes go into too much detail about one of her past relationships with a boy. It seemed unnecessary to her telling about her parents' divorce. I understand how it was related, I just did not think it was necessary.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It felt relatable at points and real. It was a mystery of sorts, with Misty trying to figure out why she feels this way. I loved how it portrayed a young girl trying to find herself. There are too many stories out there about guys trying to find out who they are. It gets a little frustrating,
I recommend this book to anyone who likes stories where people tell each other how they really feel. Enjoy!!
great novel.......2006-07-04
this book actually combines each book into one. All four girls meet at Therapy and then have to tell their lives to eachother. From one girl after another, I was amazed to see the story that layed behind each one. Out of all the girls, i consider Cat's to be the most entertaining.
Star's boyfriend got killed, Misty feels like no one loves her, Jade is considered to be spoiled and can have no feelings at all. But, really does. And Cat barely talks. It's a very good book.
Good Book.......2005-03-23
This a good book and i read all the way threw. But this is not a as good as the Flower in the Attic books. Also, you should know that v.c. Andrews did not right this is what a ghostwriter who did but this writer does a good job coping her wierd storys.
A great book.......2004-03-23
This book was very interesting because, it was a really misterious kind of book. These book was a little confusing because it would talk about the old man who was one of the charecters. Then it will talk about hes paintings. But this book at last was kind of misterious when the old men dies. He dies when he paints hes last painting.

Not perfection, but great read!.......2007-06-05
Aside from the fact that Jules appeared to be pale on every other page (for whatever reason), this book and "Evening Star" were my favorites of the 4. I loved the beginning when Saint went back with Jules and defended her name infront of her entire family.
The only other aspect that bothered me was that Saint married Jules, but treated her like some kind of child or nun more like- there was no romance until the end of the book and by that point there was TOO much sex!
However, the story was great. I loved the that other characters from the other series were in the story. Overall awesome writing...kept me intrigued and I can't wait to read "Wild Star"
Worh a try.......2007-04-21

Typical darkhorse.......2006-02-19
Go read the novel instead. The art will be better if you imagine it instead. As usual darkhorse has a bad track record when it comes to artists. As soon as i opened it, i knew i was in trouble. Why cant they get someone like Jim Lee?
Mara Jade.......2005-12-30
Good stuff. It felt a little scattered, but getting so much story into a comic format can be difficult. The drawings were wonderful, and the characters portrayed really well. I would suggest it to anyone looking to figure out Mara's role in the Star Wars universe.
Highly suggested, just wish it had been longer.
Zahn should be writing more TPB's after this..........2005-12-22
This was an excellent graphic novel by Timothy Zahn and Michael Stackpole. A great story about the Emperor's Hand, it begins right before the Second Death Star is destroyed and continues for weeks after it. Also, this TPB has about a five-page beginning that's not included in the comic version. By The Emperor's Hand shows more of the characters from other Star Wars novels, such as Ysanne Isard. It would have been nice, also, to see how and when Mara Jade meets up with Talon Karrde, but that's revealed in Star Wars: Tales from the Empire. Great art, dialogue, etc. A sequel would have been nice, but you can't have everything :)
A rare comic that's a must purchase.......2003-10-15
Mara Jade: By the Emperor's Hand is one of those rare comics that has great art, smooth storyline, commendable dialogue and genuine depth. Co-authored by Stackpole and Zahn, two of Star Wars' more popular novelists known for quality output. The result here is another of their hits you expect when collaborative craniums work well.
The quality of art shines bright, considering the comic dates back to a period where quality and art are not what they are now. You can just tell efforts were made to add extra ice to this cream, the way the front credits were specially done. Characters and climates, scenery and locale, were all highly rendered and coloured well. This is definitely one of your more 3D-ish comics, and worth the purchase if just for that.
Dialogue is what you'd expect from usual Stackpole and Zahn efficiency: quick, creative and inventive. Mara's persona here, in her Imperial days, lends her a cool competence matched only by her slick lines. The support cast isn't left out, and while I haven't quite worked out who oversaw what issues, the authors are at their vintage best here.
What makes this comic stand out from the mediocre variety out there is its creativity and effort to give just a little more for readers. The sheer range of aliens is both amazing and appreciated, both the familiar denizens and all new ones just for a show here and there. Alien species ranged from the typical to exotic to comical. Mara's is never without a way of working, and the inventive methods of working past obstacles speak highly of the writers' imagination behind her.
The storyline itself is simple and enough: eliminate Black Nebula's crimelord, who fancies himself the heir of the recently toppled Black Sun criminal network. Having failed to kill Skywalker at Jabba's palace, this she does easily. Too easily; and when her Emperor master bites the dust, she resolves to finish the job.
Nice use of Isard and Pestage, and why Mara earns her wrath. Good to see a dark-skinned man, that Imperial tech. It's rather rare to get that in comics, when humans are predominantly fair skinned. Humour, of course, wasn't lacking. The bartender alien looked like that Dexter from AOTC, his voice easily imagined.
There were some faults to note, small but noticeable as they were. The facial likeness of Strok was given to other Imperial army officers, which can confuse readers at the end. The end page itself just sorted of finished . . . perhaps a bit too abruptly and not slow enough. Mara doesn't complete her mission till almost the last page.
Further more, she does an astonishing amount to self-thinking. Thought-bubbles were everywhere, which you will find common in books but sort of gave the bemused impression the lady sure speaks a lot to herself! Almost every panel had text in which, factored into the full 144 pages, slows down reading and makes for a long comic here.
While I had problems with Jabba "just" giving Mara a speeder to get away from him when she arouses his suspicions, overall, omitting this nifty slight of work is outright criminal, and with such high standards of excellence it's well worth your $$.
YOU WILL MARRY LUKE SKYWALKER!!!.......2003-07-26
This is a review of Mara Jade ' By the Emperors Hand a comic TPB which collects 6 issues. ISBN 1569714010 published Sept 1999 and made in Canada.
Before the Emperor died he planted the thought in Mara: YOU WILL KILL LUKE SKYWALKER!! Now they marry.
This is a beautifully done comic given the technology available at the time, 1999. Visually the artwork took the time to draw the panels at a higher quality level than was usually done in the late 90's. Artwork gets 4 stars.
Inking and lay out is a step up from, but still has the newspaper comic strip appearance. The inking and color selections are subdued so I grade at 3.5 because it lacks the richness that Dark horse is capable of, but not displayed in this comic.
Story but Zahn and Stackpole oh my' Story is worth any quibbling about art and ink, though this is a comic as in a visual story. The story is 4.5 and pulls the overall grade up to 4 stars.
This is written almost as a companion to Zahn trilogy that revived the EU. We also see Mara in Jabba's fortress. The cover shows Mara with a Red light saber, but she wields a purple one throughout the book. Old Red eye ' blue eye Isard is in this story.
JediMack! Only 4 stars? This is arguably the best comic produced in its timeframe given the technology that existed in 1999. The binding is superior, which is good because this book has been re-read and seen some abuse and was made well enough to take it. I must reserve 5 star ratings for the best of the best, and in future years dark horse starts producing comic that are jaw dropping gorgeous with rich coloring and awesome penciling.
