Jessica Riley is a psychiatrist whose experience with catatonic trauma is personal as well as professional: she brought her beloved sister Melissa back from total mental withdrawal with her patience and skill. When the daughter of the president retreats into blankness after seeing her nanny and her Secret Service protector murdered, Jessica is summoned to treat the little girl. Although Jessica can't reach into her young patient's frightened mind, Melissa can--and only Melissa understands why Cassie's so afraid. When Michael Travis, the mysterious and not totally benign stranger who rescued Cassie from the kidnap-assassination that traumatized her, arrives at Jessica's Virginia estate, he's able to stop the child's nightmares long enough for Melissa to join Cassie in her self-imposed darkness and pull her back into the light. But the price he asks for his continued presence is one that Jessica, Melissa, and the president may not be able to meet. Is he an ally or an enemy? Even Melissa isn't sure--and her complicated feelings for Travis and Cassie are especially tortured because her unusual gifts allow her to see a bloody future for both of them, one she may not be able to prevent.
Iris Johansen (The Killing Game, The Search) ratchets up the suspense in this fast-moving thriller, which ranges across international borders from Washington to Amsterdam to Paris with the help of Air Force One and Two. While the president isn't very satisfactorily developed except as a frightened father who'll do almost anything to save his daughter, Travis and Melissa are fascinating characters who linger in the mind after the last explosive page; hopefully, Johansen will revisit them in a future adventure. Meanwhile, this is her best and most engaging read in years. --Jane Adams

Somewhat decent.......2007-01-21
Iris Johanson has got this really bad tick. She does this thing where she writes books that are the same as the other, but with different characters. Hope she talks to her doctor about this. But Final Target is a pretty good story, (if you haven't already read a recent Johanson book). Not much to say about it. some people on the run, someone gets killed. a woman falls for a guy, they kill someone...the end.
Excellent!.......2006-01-31
This book has a nice story and a very strong message: 'If you really want to do something, but really want to do it. Nothing will stop you.' The book's thrilling part is not so thrilling, but you won't be able to close the book until you get to the last page.
When you read a book and every page shows how can people do whatever they want just because they have perseverance and you learn that. That's a good book.
I don't think you'll regret reading this book albeit the part with the president is a little bit shabby.
You'll never guess the book's very end.
So I'll grade this book with SIX stars
entertaining but not really that good.......2006-01-03
Blind Alley has similar themes. I found it more enjoyable than Final Target.
Final Target.......2005-01-31
I am appauled at the nasty condescending tone of some folks . Obviously they haven't written a book themselves ! (or tried for that matter )
I found this book great !! It may have been unbelievable but are we looking for fiction or non-fiction ?? It was entertaining and very easy to read . I have found this to be one of her more interesting books.
Convoluted tale that wasn't overly believable.......2004-06-19
Heard the taped version of Iris Johnansen's FINAL TARGET,
a somewhat convoluted tale about a kidnapped girl who just
happens to be the daughter of the President of the United
States . . . I just didn't find it believable, nor did I care for any
of the main characters . . . only the ending, which involved
a love story of sorts, managed to pique my interest . . . I also
found Carolyn McCormick's narration excellent; in fact, much
better than the book.

A surprising read..a solid crime thriller..........2003-10-08
Knowing a little bit about the character of the Human Target, Christopher Chance (a man who will take on your identity for the right price), it's surprising to read a really good yarn involving the character coming out. Here, that matter of taking on other people's identities takes a bizarre psychological twist. Chance is hired to impersonate a famous actor who's dealing with a vicious extortionist. Unfortunately, things take a creepy turn when this actor's son is discovered to be kidnapped...by the extortionist. And did I mention that extortionist appears to be dead? So, Chance is forced into a mad dash to find the actor's son, infiltrate the extortionist's life, and stay alive. But how can Chance do all that while maintaining his own sanity? Let me put it this way: he can't. Peter Milligan (who wrote the previous Human Target mini-series) delivers one surprising turn after another that keeps you guessing until the very last page. Javier Pulido's artwork is good and clean, and conveys exactly what it needs to convey. Definitely a must for comic-book fans who like their stories hard-boiled and cold to the bone. (It's also good to see the Human Target has now an ongoing book, with Milligan and Pulido at the reins. Good stuff there as well.)
Fans Of Mission: Impossible Will Love Final Cut!.......2002-07-17
Since DC has become notorious for publishing Hardcover books that DO NOT deserve the Hardcover format (I, Paparazzi, Batman books The Chalice, Fortunate Son, Harvest Breed, Dark Knight Dynasty, Etc.), I was ready to be disappointed by Human Target: Final Cut. I enjoyed Milligan's previous Human Target story, however, so I thought I'd give it a try. Glad I did! After finishing it, I actually had to sit for a few minutes and try to digest what I'd just experienced. It was a truly staggering read!
Christopher Chance, the titular "Human Target", is just what his name implies: For the right price, Chance will assume the identity of people whose lives are endangered, using everything from fake mustaches and wigs, to Dermal Implants and Plastic Surgery. Here Chance assumes the identity of Dai Thomas, B-Movie actor, who is the third target of a homicidal Hollywood screenwriter trying to raise money for his movie project. After killing the stalker, Chance gets a bit of shocking news: The writer had kidnapped child-star Ronan White, and had hidden him away. With the kidnapper dead, Ronan will die of starvation, if he isn't dead already....and so Chance is forced to assume the identity of the killer/kidnapper, and descends into a maelstrom of drugs, murder, and nasty secrets.
The underlying theme of Chance being absorbed into the "Roles" he plays is dealt with by Writer Peter Milligan very convincingly, and the art by Javier Pulido is perfectly suited to the twisty story. Milligan manages to tie all of the loose ends up in an ending that is not only satisfying, but jaw-dropping. How often can you sat that a book left you speechless at the end? Simply an amazing effort all around. The book is divided into 4 comic-book sized chapters, which makes me think that this was originally intended as a mini-series, and someone at DC thought it was so good it merited the deluxe treatment. If that's the case, there may be hope for DC's hardcover line yet.... :)

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Book Description
Nothing could be worse than the day Cressida's father recklessly gambled away the family estate to a vile rake called Lord Crofton. Until Lord Crofton came to her with an utterly scandalous, entirely wicked proposal...
One kiss was all Tristan asked for. Not an uncommon request from a highwayman, but still, this woman, this Cressida, had the nerve to refuse the Duke of St. Raven. In fact, she seemed not frightened, but furious, yet there was something about her that told him she wanted much more than a kiss...
Customer Reviews:
Highwayman and Houri.......2007-06-19
Jo Beverley's Historical Romances are definitely a cut above most of the rest with interesting locations, better historical accuracy than the norm and a variety of plots and characters. "St Raven" links in with the 'Company of Rogues' series although not directly referring to the Rogues, and the events in this story are contemporaneous with the book "Hazard", the events of which are taking place at the same time as this book and are occasionally obliquely mentioned. However "St Raven" works entirely well as a standalone novel and might be a good one to introduce new readers to Jo Beverley's work.
Cressida Mandeville, daughter of an India Nabob, has to take some drastic action to save her family's fortunes. Her father has lost everything at a game of cards but Cressida knows that there is a fortune in jewels stored in an ivory statue in their country estate, now won by the unpleasant Lord Crofton. She decides that she will extract those jewels and to do so must put herself in the power of Lord Crofton who believes that she is agreeing to be his mistress at an orgy in the house. Cressida plans to escape before anything happens to her, having secured the jewels, but her plans are interrupted on the journey to the house when the highwayman Le Corbeau holds up the coach and carries her off. She's imprisoned in a cottage but treated well and very quickly recognises her abductor, the Duke of St Raven.
St Raven is playing at highwayman for one night only to help his bastard cousin, the real Le Corbeau, be proved innocent. However he can't leave a poor virginal miss in the clutches of Lord Crofton so whisks Cressida away. Once he has her and hears her story, however, his impulsive nature requires him to assist her to retrieve her jewels, thus starts a strange comradeship between the Duke and the daughter of a man in Trade. Of course events get more and more tangled, the statues seem to be very popular to all who see them, Cressida has to disguise herself as a houri and attend an orgy with St Raven but eventually has to return to her dull, safe life with her parents. However things are continually changing in Cressida's life and she discovers a new, adventuresome side to her nature; unfortunately the Duke is still out of her reach socially and she is unsure of his steadiness and constancy, fearing that she's just one of his whims.
Although a romance story in some ways this book focuses more on the problem of retrieving the jewels for Cressida's family and keeping her reputation safe, the falling in love seems to just happen, and fairly quickly, and without much fanfare. There is a misunderstanding towards the end of the book that keeps hero and heroine apart a little longer but it's not an annoyingly clunky one like so often is the case and is not really central to the plot. Cressida and Tris Tregallows are very different people from very different social stations but they find companionship with each other and I found it a believable basis for a lasting relationship. The initial objections to a marriage between them, mainly that Cressida has no training as a Duchess, are rather glossed over by the end of the story and I was also a little surprised at some of the intimate behaviour between the two but I did find the story a great read and I liked the characters, including the side characters, very much.
Very disappointing.......2006-08-19
Cressida Mandeville wants to recover her family's fortune. Her reckless idiot father gambled away their property to Lord Crofton. Her father had hidden jewels in an erotic statue and Cressida agrees to be Crofton's mistress for a week so she can get the jewels back.
Tristan Tregallows, Duke of St. Raven, poses as a highwayman to clear his cousin's name and, thinking Cressida needs help getting away from the evil Crofton, kidnaps her. They spend the next 350 pages being stupid.
This story was a mess. Tris was okay for the most part. But Cressida - what a hypocritical, judgmental harpy! She's the Worst. Heroine. Ever. She agreed to be a lecher's mistress, does all kinds of inappropriate things and still looks down her nose at Tris? She's a sanctimonious shrew.
And ew, ew, ew, on page 359 she decides to have sex with Tris (they're not married) and says, "I want to be closer to you, Tris, than I've been to anyone since I slid messily from my mother's womb." Blech. That's romantic HOW exactly?
I've enjoyed some of Beverley's previous books and wonder what happened with this one. Thank goodness I bought this from a used book sale that benefited the public library - at least some good came out of the experience.
Middling Regency romance..........2005-06-12
Cressida Mandeville wants to steal back the money and possessions her father had lost in a card game and the only way to do it is to agree to become the disgusting Lord Crofton's mistress for a week. She plans to trick him, steal back her things and escape his estate. But things don't turn out that way. On their way to his house, Cressida and Crofton are robbed by a disguised outlaw. The thief tells Cressida that he will return their money and jewels in exchange for a kiss. And that is when he ends up taking Cressida with him. She couldn't believe it when she discovered that the common thief is none other than Tristan Tregallows, Duke of St. Raven, one of the biggest rakes in all of London. She also cannot believe that he has agreed to help her get her properties back. They begin a dangerous and exciting adventure in which sexual tension between the protagonists makes things all the more daring. But is Tristan ready to give his heart to one woman?
I liked the noble thief angle and that Tristan sounds scrumptious. The sexual tension and subsequent sex scenes are great. Tristan and Cressida make quite an interesting couple. However, although the story is a little more original than most historical romances, or at least the aristocratic thief storyline is, I had a difficult time getting into the novel. The novel's pace was very slow at times. Also, Tristan isn't such a big rake. I have read about some awesome alpha males and the hero of this novel came across as a little too benign for me -- even if he did indulge in kinky parties and debauchery or not. All in all, this is an enjoyable romance and Jo Beverley is quite a good author, but St. Raven is nothing out of this world.
Enjoyable but not flawless.......2005-04-26
The story of Tris and Cressida was pleasant enough entertainment and another example of Jo Beverley's skill with the quill. Still, it didn't satisfy me to the same extent as some of her other novels have managed. (Warning, some spoilers).
Cressida is a bit too conventional and prudish. The strong and early attraction of Tris to Cressida is somewhat doubtful, considering his worldliness and her pretty ordinary behavior and looks. The difference in status between the protagonists is annoyingly ubiquitous. The fact that he is `the Duke' and with that just two levels below god is made clear on virtually every page - often by Tris himself. The plot is a bit too shallow and makes scandal, rumors and reputation the crux of the whole story. There are also loose ends; for instance, who is Caradoc Lyne - his role is never explained - and what happens to the Minnows?
What made me cringe however, was the fact that Tris could so easily prove that Cressida had not been the houri at Crofton's orgy by providing an imposter at his party at Nun's Chase. A discriminating (malicious) mind (and there were quite a few around) might have wondered if the second houri was identical with the first - since the disguise made a switch so easy and in fact likely, given Tris' known desire to protect her identity. Secondly, Tris risked Cressida's social death sentence if anyone had recognized the second houri as Miranda - who attended the first party (quite visibly so) and could therefore not have been the houri at Crofton's.
Some of the other characters were not really credible either: Would an adventuress like Cressida's mother really stay in England and away from her husband for over 20 years because as a child Cressida couldn't deal with India's climate? Would she have been content with the tedious life in Matlock, be a picture of propriety the whole time only to fall in love with her husband again, who by the way manages to lose their whole wealth at the card table within months of his return? Would Miranda, such a vulgar though highly-paid and seasoned prostitute in her first scene, who admits to `liking variety', become so virtuous and noble in a matter of days that she settles for married life with an artist, not minds the loss of a fortune in jewels and instead helps the recipient of said jewels clear her name by posing for her? Would a thief - even a gentleman like `Le Corbeau' - forget the bred-in grudge against St. Raven in just one conversation with his nemesis. When did he have the opportunity to get to know Tris better than anyone else, in fact well enough to play the psychologist and matchmaker between Cressida and Tris in the end?
Still, with all that said, the story progressed nicely enough and the characters were sufficiently likable and colorful to make this book an enjoyable past time.
Another fine work by Beverley!!.......2005-01-25
I found Tris to be a great hero!! He was such a complex individual - having been such a wild young man, he is beginning to fight some of his rakish ways - feeling compelled to settle down and be a "Duke" but in so many respects, really just wanting to be a good, carefree and decent person. Enter into his life, just when he is beginning to come into what he will be, Cressida - a young lady with so very many problems of her own. And Tris just becomes her knight in shining armor. What a knight he is too - wow he was so gallant, caring, romantic and just a delightful unassuming person. I loved some of the dialog between these two. Cressida also is the first woman that really emotionally and romantically takes ahold of Tris's heart. Because of that he seriously questions how far he is willing to allow the dictates of what is supposed to be a Duke's life and a Duke's wife and what will really compliment Tris's life. Cressida was the one thing that would make him the best that he could be - she truly brought out the best in him and it was a wonderful romantic tale. Great Beverley rouge book!!!
