Book Description

Before the Civil War, there lived in Louisiana, people unique in Southern history. For though they were descended from African slaves, they were also descended from the French and Spanish who enslaved them. In this dazzling historical novel, Anne Rice chronicles four of these so-called Free People of Color--men and women caught periolously between the worlds of master and slave, privilege and oppression, passion and pain.
"Anne Rice seems to be at home everywhere....She makes us believe everything she sees."

2 out of 5 stars Very hard to get into.......2007-08-22

I tried to like this book, I really did, but try as I might, I could not fall in love with it, even a little. I dont know what it was, but it was almost torture to read it. I found it disinteresting and quite boring at times. I found myseld losing track of who did what and which character was which. I usually dont have that issue when reading anything. I was truly dissapointed as I love Anne, she is my favorie author. I breathed a great sigh of relief after finishing it because it felt like I had just ran a marathon and was tired and out of breath after. And not in a good way. The last few chapters were much more interesting but it was not enough to redeam this mess of a book.

5 out of 5 stars THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS.......2007-07-25

As a native of New Orleans I'd often heard stories told about these free people of color, but until I read Anne Rice's THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS, I never knew much about them. This book was so interesting that I've read it twice over the past twelve years since I first heard about it. Each time I've read it I enjoyed in more than the first time. This is the first and only book of Anne Rice I've read. I'm not into vampires, but I plan to read her most recent book about Jesus.

2 out of 5 stars Nice background - but a slow-turner.......2007-06-26

I usually have patience when it comes to reading works that require more effort than your average bestseller, but this was really pushing it. I read "Interview with a Vampire" which was a great mood piece. Anne Rice's use of description in that case really fit the story and made me enjoy the darker aspects of 19th century New Orleans and Paris. In this novel, Anne Rice's use of description really made the work seem bloated. It kept getting to the point where I was wondering when she would get the the real meat of the plot (if there was one). Her characters were interesting, especially Marcel, Anna Bella, Christophe, and his mother Juliet. But most activities involving these characters are interrupted by descriptive paragraphs on every flicker of emotion or curve of woodwork. I saw a TV movie based on the novel, which is what peaked my interest, but the writing style Rice used was more annoyingly descriptive than I expected. The stream-of-consciousness in the novel also made reading it difficult. I've read a few shorter novels using that style of writing, like "Mrs. Dalloway" , but in this novel of a little over 600 pages, it really tested my patience. This book could have really benefited from some considerate editing. If you're interested in the subject of the gens de colour of New Orleans (and willing to display more patience than I could gather)then you could check this out. This for me was disappointing considering how accomplished "Interview with the Vampire" was.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book!.......2007-02-20

If you like historical fiction, you will definitely like this book. I was so fascinated with the historical context, I researched it further and found the book very accurate in its details of a little-known "society" that existed pre-Civil War. You can Google New Orleans People of Color to find historical information. I have not read Anne Rice, since I'm not interested in her usual topics, so am not familiar with her writing style, however, she kept my attention with this book. I couldn't put it down. I read a lot, and it is one of my all-time favorite books.
I rented the movie, which was a disappointment, as usual, but it gave me a visual impression of the characters and places.

5 out of 5 stars quick view of the novel.......2007-01-24

I can only say that Anne Rice's novels are getting less as she goes on. Not that the quality of her books following this one are subpar, to say the least, they are all fantastic narritives. I only mean that The Feast of All Saints is by far her best writing to date and in fact one of the ten best books I have ever read. The book far surpasses anything I could have expected. As an avid Rice fan and a lover of the Mayfairs and her Vampires I must still say this novel is the epitomy of everything I love about her.

Book Description

"A handsome addition to the recent literature on this Mexican phenomenon.... The photographs are magnificent.... This volume makes a valuable contribution to the study of both Mexican popular culture and the folk art it has produced. It may also be timely, as one of the interviewees laments the way U.S. Halloween customs are supplanting some of the traditional celebrations in urban centers such as Monterrey and the Federal District."

—Hispanic American Historical Review

All over Mexico, early in November, families gather to welcome the souls of the dead on their annual visit home. The smells of burning copal incense and pungent cempasúchil (marigolds) mingle with the aromas of fresh bread, new clothing, sweets, and candles. One of Mexico's most important festivals since prehispanic times, the Day of the Dead is an occasion for celebrating and feasting, cleaning and decorating graves, dancing and making music.

In this unique work, the authors explore both the historic origins of this holiday and its colorful present-day celebrations in Mexico and the United States. Interviews with Mexican artists and crafters who provide goods for the festival—from personalized sugar skulls to gigantic papier-mâché skeletons—offer a fascinating glimpse into traditional and contemporary attitudes toward death and the dead.

Lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs, The Skeleton at the Feast will be required reading for all who are interested in Mexican culture, art, and folklore.

I bought this book several years ago at the Museum of Mankind, in London. It was the book for the exhibition, which featured incredible paper sculptures of skeletons and demons.
I read every word of the book, and enjoyed the culture, history, and personal stories of these Mexican artists.

5 out of 5 stars a comprehensive look at a bizarre custom.......2000-04-05

As an anthropologist who teaches classes on Mexico, I use this book often. The "day of the dead" in Mexico exemplifies, for me, the difference between the U.S. culture and that of Mexico. Just as other cultures might find our U.S. Halloween celebrations strangely at odds with normally conservative Judeo-Christian religious observance, this book illustrates clearly the almost unfathomable blending of pre-Columbian cults of death and sacrifice with Spanish-Catholic traditions. Starting with its origins in Mexico's ancient civilizations, the book discusses and illustrates this observance through modern times, and takes the reader vicariously to the areas of Mexico in which it is most enthusiastically observed. Sit down with a cup of chocolate' and some "pan de los muertos" (bread of the dead), and enjoy a book whose topic you might have thought too morbid for your taste, but which you will probably end up finding much more compelling than repulsive. Unfortunately for me (but better for the publishing company!), I am about to order my 3rd copy of "Skeleton at the Feast"--apparently the students to whom I loan it find it too interesting to return!

my favorite Anne Rice novel -- historical fiction that evokes New Orleans in the mid 1800's through the eyes of a mulatto boy coming to maturity in the French Quarter, son of an upriver white planter and a free woman of color. A portrait of the complex and little known Creole society that included scholars, artists, craftsmen, even opera singers, whose members enjoyed a strange status - able to own property, even slaves, but disenfranchised and relegated to subservience to even base whites. Fascinating! and complete in one tightly written volume!

I am a huge fan of Maggie Shayne's so I was very disappointed with this book. Ms. Shayne relied too much on the success of her past Twilight books to carry her through this one.

I couldn't have cared any less for Max & Lou, and certainly didn't feel any romance between them. This book seemed thrown together to satisfy the Twilight readers' desire for another in this series. I hope her next one is more like the older books in the Twilight series. Before I waste money buying the next one, I will read through it to see if she's gotten the spark of the eary Twilight books back.

                Paranormal Romantic Suspense

Present Day - White Plains, New York & Endover, New Hampshire

"Mad" Maxine Stuart and her long time best friend Tempest "Storm" Jones are embarking on new careers as licensed private investigators, specializing in paranormal investigations. Max, Storm, and ex-police detective Lou Malone were instrumental in uncovering a covert government organization, DPI, the Department of Paranormal Investigation. They destroyed the DPI facility in White Plains and learned more about the paranormal than any of them wanted to. What they learned about vampires, in particular, will be very helpful in their new enterprise.

Max would like nothing better than to have Lou join their firm, but Lou has other plans. Retired from the police force, he tries to convince Max, and himself, that he just wants to fish and relax. But Max isn't buying it. At forty-four, Lou is too young to spend the rest of his life fishing, and if Max has anything to say about it, he won't. Max has been in love with Lou for ten years, since she was sixteen years old. She's done everything she can to show him that she's interested, but he never takes her "flirting" seriously. With a bit of trickery, Max gets Lou to accompany them to Maine where she and Storm will be living and opening their new business.

The trio no sooner arrives in Maine than a frantic call from Jason, an old friend, has them heading to Endover, New Hampshire, where two teenaged girls have disappeared. As Max, Storm, and Lou help Jason discover what happened to his sister and her friend it quickly becomes apparent that something is wrong with the town of Endover. Someone or something has a hold on the town that makes its residents little more than mindless drones. To complicate things, Storm, who suffers from unusual dreams and blackouts since recovering from a bullet wound to the head, grows worse. She sees and hears things she doesn't understand and begins to feel that she is not alone in her body. When this other force takes over, Storm has no memory of what happens during the blackouts. Meanwhile, Max continues her campaign to win Lou's heart despite his continued refusal to entertain thoughts of a relationship between them.

As Max works to find the missing teens, unravel the mystery of what is happening to Storm, and yearns for Lou's love, a dark menace is watching her every move. Whatever controls the town of Endover is now trying to get to Max, and through her, to Storm. Will they figure out what is going on before it's too late -- or will Max lose her life, never realizing her dream of a life with Lou?

Spine-tingling suspense laces the pages of BLUE TWILIGHT, the spectacular new book in Maggie Shayne's Twilight Series. In BLUE TWILIGHT the reader is reintroduced to Maxine, Storm, and Lou, all characters who have played key roles in previous novels. The story revolves around an ancient being who has controlled the town of Endover for years, a powerful and single-minded man who will stop at nothing to gain what he most wants -- more power and his lost love. Max and Lou's relationship, along with Storm's strange affliction, add elements of humor, passion and danger to the whole. Max is a woman who often acts on instinct and with passion, getting herself into a lot of trouble. Lou is always there to save her from her own actions, and he protects her with a fierceness that belies his claim that they are only friends. Lou has a lot of his own baggage, and he struggles with his feelings for Max, not believing he is the right man for her. As the danger escalates, so do the emotions of the key players.

The narrative is vivid and descriptive, especially in the portrayal of the miasma that hovers over Endover. It was easy to imagine the town and its people and the feeling of apathy that slowly creeps up on Max, Lou, and Storm the longer they stay. The dialogue is crisp and realistic, and the interactions between the characters believable, lively, and emotional. This is a group of people with deep bonds who find themselves questioning everything and everyone around them. The villain in the piece is not quite what the reader expects, and he garners almost as much sympathy as fear.

As I was reading the final pages of BLUE TWILIGHT, it was with a pounding heart and anxious worry over how it would all turn out. After turning the last page, I was left with many of my questions answered, but enough left open that I cannot wait until the next book, PRINCE OF TWILIGHT, comes out next year.

A novel that will grab you from the first page and never let up, BLUE TWILIGHT is one of the best paranormal suspense novels I've read this year, and the ending will knock your socks off!

2 out of 5 stars Rather empty and contrived.......2005-07-27

This book suffered from severe perspective lapses. It used third-person omniscient, and it really killed any and all dramatic tension. The vampire was barely evil, barely dark, barely anything more than a glamorized stereotype.

The characters' dialogue was also highly unbelievable and forced.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, and needed, but not really that interesting............2005-07-19

I have read all the others and could not put them down. This is a good book if you have not read her others in the vampire series. it just isn't as good as the others.
First of all, you have to stop and go back in time because the book is basically a bunch of missed details from previous books. Honestly, I wasn't that interested in the characters when they showed up in the previous books, so to start reading it and realize that the entire book are these characters that bore me to death was very disappointing.
The details are interesting, and needed for the next book which seems WAAAAAAAY better, but won't be out for quite some time. A complete teaser book.
Like I said before, if you don't already read and adore her other vampire books, then this is probably a pretty good book for you, but I just found it lacking in the qualities the other books are abundant in.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Twilight -Vampire romance.......2005-04-29

Blue Twilight was an amazing well written Romance novel... Strong story line, which I haven't found in other romances.

The book opens with an erotic scene between a vampire and unnamed female victim... but I really hesitate to call her a victim.. He is gentle, careful, taking care to make sure she is not afraid.... He makes the experience pleasant for her and after feeding doesn't kill the woman, but simply erases her memory of the event and sends her back to where she came from.

The body of the book is centered around four main characters (an ex-cop, two young female PI's, and an old friend in trouble)... typical "I love him but he doesn't love me", "I love her, but can't get involved." theme under the story.

                Book Description

Gilkey's latest work takes the measure of the current American religious and cultural crisis, assesses recent theological responses to it, and shows how these illumine our understanding of the ongoing creationism controversy. Throughout, Gilkey articulates a faith-stance responsive to the contemporary world of radical pluralism and moral uncertainty—without retreating to simplistic dogmatism.

Gilkey gauges the legacy of such key figures as Paul Tillich, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Karl Barth for our current situation. Long a crusader against creationism, "creation science," and the Religious Right, Gilkey shows plainly how the latter is neither religious nor right but is symptomatic of larger unanswered challenges of modernity.

Gilkey's vision of a "blue twilight," in which light fights with dark in religion and culture, stands as a stark reminder of what is at stake in the future of American religious life.

                Book Description

Something precious and beautiful is being ruthlessly destroyed. And those who champion the small, fragile, threatened lives are endangered themselves. An agent for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Rachel Porter has been assigned to the northern California wilds, where a biologist recently vanished while searching for a rare blue butterfly believed extinct -- a hunt that may well have led him to his death. And now a young girl has gone missing also, and her disappearance might be connected, so Rachel cannot ignore it. But bodies and lies are piling up in her path, and beyond them catastrophe is waiting for Rachel Porter. Because in a world of heartless greed and cruel obsession, there may be nothing that separates a fanatic collector from a cold-blooded killer.

                2 out of 5 stars Speart's Blue Period.......2005-10-14

I guess every writer has to have a dud book, and this one is Speart's. I have enjoyed her Rachel Porter, US Fish and Wildlife agent series since its inception for its compelling mysteries and wry humor, but this one fell far short of my expectations. While everyone enjoys the back story of the continuing lives of the characters in a series, it is generally enjoyed as a backdrop, not the driving force of the book. Basically, this book didn't have much of a story, jumping from one idea to another, then sloppily knotting them all together at the end.

The story begins with Rachel coming to from a terrifying daydream in the middle of a self-defense class in her new home city of San Francisco. She moved there with FBI agent boyfriend, Jake Santou, and gay transvestite friend, Terri Tune. They're renting apartments from an old Chinese woman, Mae Rose Chang, who makes an attempt to teach Rachel to cook before simply disappearing from the story altogether. Rachel starts out chasing down a butterfly poacher and checking out his lair before moving on to investigate a complaint of a missing biologist in Mendocino, which is supposedly the only known habitat of the rare Lotis blue butterfly. Rachel senses there might be a connection between the missing biologist and the butterfly dealer she busted, so she makes a trip to Mendocino.

She puts all that on the back burner when another gay friend, Eric, shows up, in search of his runaway daughter, Lily. There's a bunch of stuff thrown in about San Francisco's underground vampire community that goes nowhere, and enough pro-alternative lifestyle remarks so as to be a blantant advertisement. There's no doubt about which direction the author's politics lean, which could be a turnoff for any reader who disagrees with them. When the search for Lily turns up a tattoo artist with a connection to the Lotis blue butterfly, it's a bit of a stretch, but some kind of thread was needed to tie all these loose ends together.

Rachel always seems to be one step away from finding Lily, and always manages to stumble onto evidence about the big, evil butterfly dealer she's after at the same time. She apparently enjoys road trips, whimsically zipping between San Francisco and Mendocino on a daily basis (6 hours round trip with sidelines about the Redwood Forest) until the conclusion. Two other things bothered me. Rachel drives an Explorer, yet needed a tow truck to pull her out of the forest when she went off the road, and then she just drove off and kept driving for days without doing any repairs to the vehicle. Also, Rachel never does anything, she BEGINS TO do everything. While I'm complaining, the first murder didn't even occur until almost page 200, and then bodies piled up like crazy in the last chapter. Additionally, I didn't laugh or even smile at anything in this story, whereas Rachel Porter mysteries are usually full of chuckles.

I highly recommend Jessica Speart as an author, but I can only recommend this book to fans of the series who don't want to miss a piece of Rachel's story. This book was a giant disappointment to me, and I fervently hope it is merely indicative of a temporary slump, and not a major downturn for this otherwise very enjoyable series.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner in a great series.......2004-10-11

Jessica Speart continues to entertain with the latest installment in her extremely enjoyable and informative Rachel Porter series, BLUE TWILIGHT. Having annoyed her superiors pretty much everywhere she's been stationed as a Fish and Wildlife Service agent, she's now in San Francisco investigating...butterfly poaching? However, when a biologist goes missing and her friend Terri's boyfriend's daughter also disappears Rachel begins to fear that there's a lot more than the obvious going on. And although her boyfriend Jake Santou is back after surviving a brutal plane crash, his addiction to painkillers and alcohol is tormenting both of them. Plus, Terri is having a difficult time finding work as a female impersonator - everyone wants Britney, not Madonna - and Rachel's landlady is determined to teach Rachel how to cook. Yikes. More missing women, a mysterious cult-like figure who is engineering the butterfly poaching, and a bunch of obsessive butterfly collectors round out Rachel's list of problems that will keep her running to the book's exciting conclusion.

Fans who have become disappointed with Nevada Barr should look to this wonderful series that continues to keep up the high level of quality Speart started with in the first Rachel Porter mystery, GATOR AIDE. Rachel is likeable for her humor, her determination, her love of wildlife, and her attitude that really annoys her bosses. The descriptions of San Francisco are also beautifully rendered as Rachel explores Chinatown and the city's wildlife. BLUE TWILIGHT concludes with one of the creepiest scenes written, and I can't encourage readers enough to follow this series. Don't miss it.

                4 out of 5 stars Blue Twilight.......2004-09-08

The rare Lotis Mission Blue butterfly, is every collectors' dream piece. Very few have the Lotis Blue. When the biologist originally sent to investigate an illegal butterfly trade goes missing, Rachel Porter is put on the case.

Rachel Porter is an agent for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. She believes the previous person was murdered. While looking into the disappearance, a little girl also goes missing and witnesses start dying. Rachel must quickly learn what makes this butterfly so valued and why collectors are so interested in such a delicate creature. More importantly, why would someone become a cold blooded killer to get one.

**** Definitely a good read! The last thirty pages kept "butterflies" in my stomach. Author Jessica Speart spins a tale that is guaranteed to keep her readers on the edge of their seats and up well into the night. ****

The book "The Twilight Seas" by Sally Carrigher was a terrific book. It was a very descriptive book. I really liked it. It is aboout a baby whale and the first crucial moments of his life. It is also about the migration routes and how careful the whale had to be when people were allowed to hunt them. I recommended this book to any person young (no younger than about 10) or old that really enjoys learning about animals and how they live. But it did have some unexcting points. Some times it was on a subject too long and it lost my interest sometimes. It used very advanced vocabulary that I didn't understand.

Jane Eppinga has written a book that is fun and entertaining. Sadly, some of the history recorded in this book is not exactly accurate. As someone who has spent a great deal of time reseaching Arizona History, I found that to be disappointing.

For instance, the author states that the night before the famous shootout near the OK Corral, the Clantons, the McLaurys, Johnny Behan and the Earps were all in the Birdcage Theater, sitting at opposite ends. Great story, but there is not a grain of historical fact in it! In reality, the Birdcage Theater opened its doors for the first time in late December, 1881, a full two months after the famous shootout. By that time Tom and Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton were dead and buried! This is just one of several historical errors that I have found in the book.

Nonetheless the book is entertaining, and would be a great read on a cold winter's night. But take the all 'history' in this book with a big grain of salt.
