Super Reader.......2007-08-04
Didn't really enjoy this at all, compared to the other Barker books. This is pretty much when I stopped reading him, in general. A quite disappointing book after the other work I had enjoyed reading in the past. Hard to put the figure on quite why, but it could well be that there are just not enough monsters.
Everville: The Second Book Of The Art.......2007-05-18
If you're at all interested in the world of comparative mythology and it's connection to psychoanalysis, or even the world of fantasy and the occult, you'll love this book. More than anything it's relentlessly engaging. At several turns it's romantic, horroriffic, erotic, mystifying, etc. A story that delves into the idea of a world beyond worlds. A story of dream and fantasy. I guarantee it's well worth the read. Best of all, this book stands on its own...meaning you don't have to read the first installment of the book, "The Great And Secret Show: The First Book Of The Art".
The Books of the Arts II.......2007-03-24
"Everville" (also the name of the town where the book takes place) is the sequel to Clive Barkers wild, ground breaking "The Great and Secret Show". Everville is at the heart of the magical war over Quiddity, the powerful dream sea of an ethereal world that interacts with our physical world. The characters from the first book are back (like the McGuire and Telsa), and we also meet new, really interesting ones too, like Phoebe Cobb and her lover Joe, along with teenager Seth. Plus a larger role for Barker regular Harry D'Amour. There is also a lot of new feral monsters and new bad guys to contend with. There is a lot of magic and mystical in this. "Everville" is not a very scary horror book; but it is a huge, epic fantasy. It is pretty original, I haven't read anything like this before, and I am hard pressed to find anyone who can write this big of scope credibly now. I realize this is a short review, but you must take my word for it, it is a great read. The only thing is that if your easily offended at a rather liberal use of religious figures, you may not be very forgiving at Barker's use. Also his view of small town America is a little off, but what do you expect, he's British. I can's wait for the next book, if Mr. Barker is ever planning another one.
The third book to the series.......2006-03-18
I love Clive Barker and I am getting ready to go pick up his second book Everville. I just saw a question on here about the third book and thought I would give everyone a heads up.
It appears the third book is not out yet and will not neccessarily be out any time soon. Please see the following link for his reasoning for this http://www.clivebarker.dial.pipex.com/newbooksb.html
In a nutshell he says that the last book will be a monster and that it takes time to prepare to write this type of book. It also says that he has other series going on as well that take time. Too many ideas running through his head and that he needs to clone himself. Anyway - take a look at the link if you are interested but he says that he promises it will be out before the end of this century.....
Happy reading!
Well, it's Clive Barker... What more can you ask for?.......2006-02-18
I never intended to review this book, partly because tons of people have done it already, and partly because this was a book I read on my "leisure time", that is, time when I wasn't reading review copies that different publishers had sent me.
But hey, it's Clive Barker, and I since he's the greatest author alive today I figured I at least had to say a word or two about Everville.
Just read it. It's that simple. You'll understand and appreciate it a whole lot more if you first read The Great and Secret Show - since that's the first book in the Trilogy about the Art - but if you're unable to find it you still better not pass on Everville.
Because it's Clive Barker, and Clive Barker knows how to write. So go get it. Now.

More "romance" than mystery!.......2007-08-26
Tami Hoag's novels are not my usual genre but a coworker recommended her books -- romance with a bit of mystery. I've read two and am getting around to finally writing some reviews.
Lucky's Lady was one of Tami's first attempts at a novel outside of romance and it shows. It is unlikely that those who enjoy her later books would like this one as much. But I really enjoyed it!
It is mainly a slightly mysterious plot in amongst very erotic encounters. OK ... that was good enough for me. I am not sure why these tormented characters appealed to me but they did. Serena and Lucky both were hiding from feelings and life in general. Just in opposite ways! How they manage to draw each other out of hiding is very worth finding out! Since others explain the whole plot, I am not going to rehash it here.
And although the mystery is easily solved, so I thought, I was surprised by a twist at the end! Loved it and if you are more into romance than suspense, you will love it too! Side characters are well fleshed and very interesting! They make the book even better.
A fun read.......2007-08-21
This is Wuthering Heights meets His Girl Friday meets It Happened one night, except not even on par with them individually.
A refined, educated, professional lady, Serena, from the right side of the tracks meets dark, surly, smoldering, and highly sexed rogue, Lucky, from the Louisiana swamp because he is the only one who is willing to take her to her grandfather, who is living in the dangerous swamp. Gee, guess what happens when they are forced to spend the night together after a day of the prerequisite ego clashing banter of insults, protestations, and orders. With his blunt sexual talk and physical aggressiveness towards her, Lucky turns her on to a "heat" her body has never felt before, even though she's been married before. Somehow, she just can't help herself, even though up until that point he's been nothing but a rude and crude cad and potential thug/rapist/killer, and she gives way to his "huge" (snort) prowess on the second day after meeting. Wow. Just wow. This is definitely fiction.
I actually really enjoyed this book. It was a very light and easy read, and it is the first Hoag book that I read, which was written prior to her later, much more edgy mystery/thriller books, which I had read first. I love the way she writes so I took a stab at one of her transition from romance, which I haven't really read much of, to the mystery/thriller novels she's written. To be fair, there is even a sort of light mystery in this book. (It's touted as a mystery). Serena and Lucky have to find out who is trying to sabotage the plantation, which has been in Serena's family for generations and which represents something Serena holds dear. Is it the evil guy from the big conglomerate, which wants the land so it can pollute the swamp? Or, the evil twin sister, who wants the money from the sale of the land to help her get her dream position in society and further her ambitions? Or, maybe the two Neanderthal thugs that hang out in the thug bar on the outskirts of town where Lucky hangs out? It's pretty easy to figure out who the villain is.
I gave this book 4 stars just because it was so entertaining. Although this is mostly a love story/romance novel really, there is just enough mystery and intrigue to keep the pages turning. I just also happen to enjoy Hoag's turn of a phrase; very snappy, fun, and colorful, even if over the top at times. I read this book in one day.
STEAMY read that's well worth the time.......2007-03-12
May I just start by saying this book is what romance reading should be. I've read a few other romances, but none quite this good. The bad boy here, Lucky, plays his part perfectly, and Serena is the perfect antithesis to him. They both need work, and the last thing they are about to do is let the other change them and that is the magic of this story. Neither one lets it happen willingly. The characters are artfully described for you to picture, as well as the captivating scenes of the bayou, not to mention the interaction between these two characters. This is a feel good, STEAMY read that's well worth the time.
Tami Hoag NEVER Fails to Deliver.......2007-03-02
Lucky's Lady is an amazing novel. Some may say it's hackneyed and boring but I disagree. How can you ever get sick of a classic romance novel mixed in with a little suspense? As always, Tami Hoag drags you into the plot with her surreal desciption of Louisiana's bayou, her intriguing characters who you grow to love, and the erotic/suspensful mood of her novel. Personally I am Tami Hoag's biggest fan and she never fails to disappoint me (Lucky's Lady is no exception). Like all her books, Lucky's Lady is a page-turner that you can't put down until you reach the ending. The finale is touching and deeply moving, if I continue I'm sure I'll spoil it for those you haven't read the book yet. I would reccomend it to anyone.
loved It!.......2007-01-27
I just absolutely loved this book. The romance.. the suspense.. the characters.. all make for a nice package. It is one of those books that I can easily read over and over again. The details are superb and Tami really develops the characters well.. The little bit of french Lucky speaks throughout the novel add that extra something. I just loved the ending, but was so sad to see the book end. You must ready this!
Book Description
On March 19, 1945, a Japanese bomber screamed toward the USS Franklin and dropped two 500-pound bombs through the ship’s decks, killing hundreds of officers and enlisted men in just the first few moments, and thrusting the lives of nearly 3,000 other American seamen and aviators into mortal danger. As the Franklin listed dangerously near capsizing, the light cruiser USS Santa Fe, nicknamed the Lucky Lady, bellied up alongside her flaming hull and attempted the most daring rescue in U.S. naval history. Lucky Lady recreates the legendary World War II careers of the Franklin—the most decorated naval vessel of the war—and the Santa Fe—unparalleled in frontline service and avoiding casualties—through the eyes of the men on board. Perspectives range from the highest levels of rank and flying altitude to deep within the ships’ bowels. Through the bloody years of the Pacific campaign—from Pearl Harbor to the Philippines to the waters just off the coast of Japan, and finally the decimated city of Nagasaki—the crewmembers encountered all the circumstances of war. Now in paperback, this book will be cherished by readers of military history as a fitting tribute with stirring echoes in our present time. Photographs are featured.
Customer Reviews:
A great, exciting book, it put me in touch with what my dad must have gone through.......2006-08-17
I wish my dad was still alive to see this book, and that I could talk to him about it. He (Robert H. Hofer) was a Machinist's Mate on the Santa Fe for most of its career, and I remember hearing him describe the saving of the Franklin, and seeing steel burn as the Franklin's magazines exploded and showered the deck of the Santa Fe with fire; and also what it was like to work down in the engine room while the ship manuvered off the beach at Iwo Jima, exposed to shore fire. The descriptions in this book are incredibly vivid and exciting, and answer a lot of the questions I wish I could ask my dad today. Forgive any errors of fact -- maybe the author has read all the reviews and will put out a revised version in the future. If you've ever wondered what it must have been like to be 19 years old, in the middle of the Pacific, fighting the Japanese in the biggest naval battles in history, then you've got to read this book.
I couldn't get past page 15.......2005-09-14
I was very excited to read this book after finishing Duane Schultz excellent book about the damage control on USS Houston, where Santa Fe played an important role, but by page 15 I had counted 4 serious errors or editing mistakes, most notably that USS Saratoga was at the Battle of Midway.
I couldn't plow on because I couldn't trust the information that I didn't know given that the stuff that I did was riddled with mistakes.
Two Heroic Ships and Their Fight Against the Japanese.......2005-07-06
Author Steve Jackson has done a remarkable job of describing the lives of two great ships; the light cruiser USS Santa Fe and the aircraft carrier USS Franklin. Jackson got his inspiration for this great book by coming across a lock of hair that his mother had sent to his father, who was a radioman aboard the Santa Fe.
The Santa Fe was one of the newest light cruisers in the Pacific fleet. weighing in at 11,000 tons, it was hard to describe her as "light". She packed a powerful punch, with twelve six-inch guns in her main battery, and numerous 5-inch, 40mm, and 20mm for anti-aircraft defense. She also held the record for the longest cruise without being sent back to the United States, but she claimed her nickname, the "Lucky Lady", from somehow managing to stay out of harm's way, and she suffered no casualties of her own during the course of the war.
The Franklin was one of the new Essex-class aircraft carriers that began rolling out of U.S. Navy shipyards in early 1943. At over 850 feet long, she was nearly as big as three football fields, plus she could carry 100 aircraft as well. However, she had her share of run-ins with the Japanese and, unlike the Santa Fe, was heavily damaged by a kamakaze in October 1944.
These two ships' lives intertwined forever on the day of March 19, 1945. Sailing less than 100 miles from mainland Japan, an enemy dive bomber managed to make it past the combat air patrol and the anti-aircraft defenses to put two 500 lb bombs into the Franklin. The carrier was loaded with bombs, torpedoes, and thousands of gallons of oil and aviation gas and soon became a blazing inferno. The Santa Fe was part of the screening force surrounding the carrier group and was soon on her way to help the injured flattop. Undeterred by the flames and explosions, the captain of the Santa Fe manuvered his ship directly alongside the Franklin to assist in fire-fighting operations and the removal of injured personnel. For over two hours, the Santa Fe risked herself to help the Franklin and its crew.
Despite the horrendous damage and the loss of over 700 of her crew, the Franklin managed to limp back to the United States under her own power for repairs.
Much of the credit for the saving of the Franklin belongs to her heroic crew, who fought fires and rescued wounded comrades without regards for thier own personal safety. The Santa Fe also deserves credit for assisting in fire fighting operations as well as removal of wounded men while placing herself directly in harm's way.
This is an extraordinary book. The author does an excellent job of describing the saga of these two ships and their crews. The camaraderie of the crewmembers shines through on each page, and the heroics of these young men are discussed vividly. He devotes equal time to the stories of each ship, their crew, and the battles they fought. The highlight of the book is the impeccable narrative concerning the bombing attack on the Franklin and the heroic actions of the Santa Fe to help the injured carrier. Read this excellent work of naval history and discover how two ships, working together, overcame nearly impossible odds.
A for effort but D for quality.......2005-01-20
First let me say that my father was a crewman on a destroyer that helped save many crewmembers of the franklin that were in the water so my brothers and sisters were all looking forward to this book as I was.
In a nutshell Steve Jackson does attempt to tell the reader of the story and rescue of the Franklin in WWII and his work is a noble effort. However either because of his limited knowledge of military hardware or because of an inept editor this book contains so many blatant and obvious technical and historic errors that I found it difficult to slog through. I started noticing these errors and then started counting and then finally I lost count all together. They are distracting to anyone who relishes true history. I haven't seen as many errors in a book since Stephen Ambrose's Wild Blue Yonder.
And the format of the book is disconnected because Jackson skips from the Franklin to the Santa fe, forgoing rhyme or reason in doing so. I understand why he does it but at times I had to stop in mid sentence to go back to see what ship I was reading about. (I wonder how many other readers had the same problem?) I could barely put heads or tails together. And my brothers and sisters all had the exact same problems with this book and that is why I am taking the effort to write this review.
We all know it is not the subject and the men have a fasinating story and we do not want or intend to take anything away from these heroes. It is just the way Lucky Lady is edited.
This book is a good story and I give Jackson an A for effort. But reading this book was work. A reader should never have to work to read a book. I was exhausted when I fianlly finihsed it. I just couldn't wait to put it down.
Emotionally Touching.......2004-10-20
My father (deceased) was one of the "boys" on the USS Franklin in World War II. I recently attended a reunion of the Franklin and met several "young" gentlemen who served in the fireroom with my Dad. The stories you read in the book are their stories, not made up and not ficticious. My sincere thanks to Steve for caring enough to write about something that happened so long ago. It may only matter to those who were there or the families of those who were there but, regardless, it is a priceless recollection of the era by those who lived it. Thanks again, Steve.

Lady Boss.......2005-02-17
Nothing comes remotely close to this series.
In LADY BOSS, Lucky has finally found the love of her life in comedian/actor Lennie Golden. Not only are the two different as night and day, but they are both as headstrong as ever causing them to sometimes bump heads, but the love that they have for each other surpasses all of that.
Who would've thought that Lucky would find love again after her beloved Marco? Three marriages later, and she has finally got it right this time around. So like any loving wife, Lucky tries to make her husband happy. When Lennie nags and complains about the goings on in his workplace -- Panther Studios, Lucky decided to eliminate his frustration by buying the studio so that the pair of them can have complete control. But nothing wanted in life comes easily. Before Lucky can take full control of the studio, she has to go undercover, and expose all employees who pretty much aren't "getting the job done". This is where the adventure begins.
Meanwhile Lennie is oblivious to this plan. Lucky has to cover up her whereabouts because she wants to surprise him with this after the plans flow accordingly. This situation brings on strain that the two were not prepared for. Will Lennie appreciate the gift Lucky is working on presenting him with? You'll have to read and find out!
A Fun Read!.......2004-01-13
I am not normally one to ready "trashy" novels. Ms. Collins has set up a great list of characters (Bridgett, Charlie Dollar, etc.) in the Lucky Santangelo series. This is perhaps the best of the bunch. Feisty Lucky Santangelo purchases a movie studio from one of the old time owners (kind of a Louis Mayer personna) and becomes the boss of the studio. This causes a lot of friction with her husband Lennie Golden, who feels cheated of his right to win roles on his own merit.
I read this one really fast!
Who is really the boss?.......2002-12-24
First of all let me tell you that this book is not an easy reading, it has to many characters and to many stories, to be exact it has six stories, at first all of them separately but in the middle of the book they will be as one big story. Of course the main story, the story of Lucky and Lennie is the must important, but you are really interested in all the stories at the same time. When you end a chapter of one story you want to skip the next chapter to see what happened in that specific story, but when you start to read about the other story you forget about the first one and you will want to know what happened to this one.
The end of the book is not so good, but the book still keep 5 stars
'LADY BOSS'.......2002-09-18
I recently finished 'LADY BOSS' the third book in the Lucky Santangelo series and I absolutely loved it! Where 'LUCKY' was good 'LADY BOSS' was great. In this third installment Lucky goes to Hollywood in hopes of acquiring a major movie studio, however, just before she closes the deal she finds out that there is a catch. She has to work undercover at the studio for six weeks as a plain Jane secretary! At first Lucky is reluctant but soon the idea of surprising her husband movie star Lennie Golden with his own studio coupled with the sheer enjoyment of being able to spy on all of the studio executives is too much for Lucky to pass up. But as Lucky soon finds out Lennie is not too thrilled with her surprise, which puts their marriage in serious jeopardy.
There are so many enjoyable story lines in this book that it makes it hard to put down. An example of this is the story of Venus Maria and Martin Swanson the movie star and the billionaire. Swanson is a business tycoon who is married to Dena Swanson a woman who became famous by using the Swanson name and refuses to let anybody take that away from her including the Madonna like movie and recording star Venus Maria. But Venus is determined to have Martin all to herself that is until her brother Emilio shows up and stirs up trouble for the couple.
I found this book to be extremely entertaining and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Lucky is powerful, demanding and independent a true example of a strong woman. 5 Stars!
Lucky is back and better than before!.......2002-07-06
Lady Boss is personally my favorite Lucky Santangelo novel so far. She has found a husband, who is just as in love with her as she is in love with him. And, she is on her way to being a successful movie mogul, unprecedented for a woman. Lucky is off to purchase Panther Studios, a once prestigious movie studio that is now ridiculed for making trashy, forgettable, and downright terrible movies. This novel is by far the most entertaining in the Lucky series, and the highlight has to be when Lucky lets go the workers who you only grow to hate throughout the novel.

From the back of the book: "Parker Prescott had no intention of ever settling down, but Molly Hanks was the kind of woman who could stop a man in his tracks -- with or without her buffalo gun! Molly knew a smooth-talking drifter when she saw one. A man with charm like that was dangerous. And she had better things to do than keep an eye on some silly cowboy." A nice western historical romance with a lot of charm.

Lucky Lady.......2005-02-15
In Lucky Lady a girl named Jamie who lives in the city goes to her grandfather's ranch in Texas for the summer. While there she makes a friend, and gets a tour of the small town close to her grandfather's ranch. On the tour her friend takes her to an action. At the action she sees this beautiful horse that gets spooked and goes wild. When nobody bids she gets worried and buys the horse with all of her summer money. When she gets back to her grandfather's ranch her grandfather gets really made at her. You will have to read the book to find out what happens to Jamie, the horse, and her grandfather.
I enjoyed in Lucky Lady because Jamie never gives up on her horse Lucky Lady. Although her grandfather and people in town tell her to take the horse back and auction and try to make some money off of it. I liked the book a lot and do not think that there was a confusing part in it. The book affected me personally because I can't imagine living without my dad and having my mom travel to another country because of her job. It also affected me personally because I go to my grandfather's a lot during the summer and help him a lot inside and outside of the house.
I would recommend this book to people who like horses to read this book. I would also say that it is for children ages 9 - 12.
Lucky Lady.......2002-03-19
Lucky Lady is a great book. I realy enjoyed it! This is a great book for anyone that likes stories about horses and who likes an interesting book. A young girl named Jamie gets more than she expected for the summer. First she has to stay with her grandad which she hasn't seen in over four years and she has to live with him the whole summer. Her mother gives her two hudred dollars and she ends up spending it on a wild horse she got from an auction. Now her grandad and herself have to take care of the horse and they try to make it tame. This is a great book! I really enjoyed the book!
More than one lucky lady.......2000-07-22
While her widowed mother works abroad, twelve-year-old Jamie must leave her Maine home to spend the summer at her grandfather's ranch. She impulsively buys a unbroken horse at an auction. Jamie copes with change and adversity as this exciting adventure unfolds.
Two weeks may not seem like a very long time, but the lives of three generations are changed in this satisfying tale.
This is written by the author of the popular "Sleepover Friends" series and would be enjoyable for fans in upper elementary grades and junior high. Readers interested in Texas, ranching, grandfathers or horses should like it as well.
