Allende Rocks.......2007-04-06
I love Allende's characters and her writing. Zorro was my first read of hers and I have purchased everything. I get very involved in the story and characters. Her trilogy for kids is in my library and is checked out all of the time. Good writing is good writing.
This is the ENGLISH LANGUAGE VERSION.......2007-03-21
Do not be fooled by the first sentence being shown in Spanish above (as I was). This is the English language version of Eva Luna, and Amazon mistakenly put the first sentence of the Spanish version by the title. I know this is not a review of the book, but I would like to prevent someone else from making the mistake I did and ending up paying almost the full price of the book in shipping charges to try to return it and get the correct version.
Interesting Novel .......2006-11-06
This novel is a romantic one. The romance starts nearly at the end of the book, but it's a very good novel. It will make you laugh and make you amazed!!! Although, it's magic realism, you should try keep an open mind. It's a different book that's all. But you'll love it!!!
Eva Luna.......2006-10-30
I have to remember that as much as I like the concept of "magical realism" I, for the most part, don't like the genre. I can think of two books I have actually enjoyed: Macunaíma by Mário de Andrade and The Yellow Sofa by Eca De Queiros. Most of the time the genre leaves me cold, confused and somewhat bored. There are often too many tangents and too much extraneous detail: Eva Luna has these problems.
I wanted to read Eva Luna after having enjoyed Daughter of Fortune back in 2003 and having had a moderate enjoyment of Zorro in 2005, although I had felt the author hadn't really understood the character. While there are some beautifully written passages in Eva Luna they didn't flow together to create a feeling of a coherent story or a plot that was actually going somewhere. Nor, though, did it feel like it was written strictly as a mood piece. Poor Eva seemed to be forced to tread water in the middle of all that flowing prose, bobbing her head up whenever the story required her to be present in a scene.
Eva Luna starts as a memoir of an illegitimate daughter of a maid and an indian. While Eva Luna continues to narrate the story of her life, she is but a passive witness to a disparate group of odd balls who end up becoming political revolutionaries. Their stories are so much more interesting than Luna's. Her constant rambling drags down the story and her role in all of this beyond reporter and maybe lover isn't clear.
Magical book from a magical author.......2006-08-29
Isabel Allende has yet to disappoint me. Her books are delightful. I was introduced to her work through "Daughter of Fortune" and I've been hooked ever since. After having read almost everything Allende has published, Eva Luna remains one of my favorites. The characters and story are larger than life, but still somehow relatable. Follow this one up with "The Stories of Eva Luna".

Book Description

Uneven but with mythic dimensions.......2005-09-09
A friend introduced me to this collection this summer. It's a relatively easy read for anyone with a college education in Spanish. Allende uses modern stylistic devices and vocabulary.
The frame is a Scheherazade set up... a series of stories about love relationships.
Some stories are a bit schematic and unsatisfying but when she hits paydirt, it's killer. I especially liked the stories 'Si me tocaras el corazon' and 'Walimai.' These felt almost like deep folk/ fairytales.
If you enjoyed A.S. Byatt's "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye," you'll like this one too.
Wonderful Writer--Allende.......2005-08-10
Cuentos de Eva Luna arrived rapidly. I am reading it for pleasure and I'm not being disappointed. The book is well bound for a paperback, comfortable to hold, easy to read for a student of a second language.
She Writes With Magic Ink.......2005-05-27
What a collection of characters! An illiterate woman who sells words. A man obsessed with a little girl. A woman whose marriage was based on letters written by the wrong man. A woman who spends her life waiting for revenge. A rich man who keeps a girl prisoner. Rascals trying to break into society. A lonely dictator. Invisible Indians. Every character is flawed in some terrible way, and yet, somehow appealing. Somehow you become attached to each of the characters and you want to hear their stories. There is something absolutely magical about these stories by Isabel Allende, stories you can't put down.
What is her secret? I don't know. I think she writes with magic ink. But, there is something else, too. Her characters never give up. No matter how bad, how flawed, how actually depraved they may be, they keep struggling toward the light. And so, each of us, with our own struggle to escape from darkness, can relate to these people and their stories.
These are some of the finest stories I have ever read. I recommend the collection most highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

Book Description
Isabel Allende is one of the world's most beloved authors. In 1988, she introduced the world to Eva Luna in a novel of the same name that recounted the adventurous life of a young Latin American woman whose powers as a storyteller bring her friendship and love. Retruning to this tale, Allende presents The Stories of Eva Luna, a treasure trove of brilliantly crafted stories.
Lying in bed with her European lover, refugee and journalist Rolf Carle, Eva answers hes request for a story "you have never told anyone before" with these twenty-three samples of her vibrant artistry. Interweaving the real and the magical, she explores love, vengeance, compassion, and the strenghts of women, creating a world that is at once poingnantly familiar and intriguingly new.
Rendered in the sumptuously imagined, uniquely magical style of one of the world's most stunning writers, The Stories of Eva Luna is the conerstone of Allende's work. It is not to be missed by anyone -- whether a devotee of Ms. Allende's oeuvre or a new acquaintance to her work.
Customer Reviews:
Read Eva Luna First.......2006-08-17
This review is for the English language Bantam Book paperback edition published in February 1992, 367 pages. THE STORIES OF EVA LUNA did not appear on the USA Today top 150 best sellers list, although four of the author's novels have appeared on that list.
THE STORIES OF EVA LUNA is a collection of 23 short stories set in a fictional Caribbean country. Written in the style of magical realism, these are tales about the lives, loves and lovemaking of impoverished but hearty folks, including bandits, scoundrels and prostitutes, who confront cruelty, misfortune or death.
Although only six of the stories incorporate the characters and events in Allende's novel EVA LUNA, they do constitute a sequel of sorts, especially the final story. For an overall richer experience, read EVA LUNA first.
And of Clay are we Created.......2006-01-20
i read that short story in my lit class. i loved it. it caused me to read Eva Luna and it is also the reason that i have given this book 4 stars. thats how good And of Clay are we Created. i'm not sure if all the storys are worth it. its very erotic. and i don't remember most of them but i do remember liking quite a few of them. however , the best one is the last one.
A Masterpiece.......2003-10-27
Isabela Allende's "The Stories of Eva Luna" is truely a masterpiece not only in its origional Spanish edition, but also in this English translation, which fully gives the reader a feel for Allende's tone. Each story is consice, yet powerful and filled with allusions to everyday life. Allende covers a wide range of topics from politics and the story of Eva Peron (in "Two Words") to the complexity of love (in "Toad's Mouth). The way in which the book parallels "1001 Nights" is amazing, as well as the way in which Allende is able to incorporate the novel "Eva Luna" into this work. My personal favorites were "The Little Heidelberg" (possibly the best example of magical realism that I have ever read) and "And of Clay Are We Created" (a moving story based on a real event).
Love and Death Allende Style.......2003-09-11
Allende's socio-economic, political and feminist agendas are melded together in the lives of the residents of Agua Santa. Her use of the short story genre is masterful. This is truly a can't put down book, leaving its readers clamoring for more Allende. Viva Isabel!
The Stories of Eva Luna.......2003-09-08
These stories were so amazing, creative, and vivid. I enjoyed them very much. I especially loved the shortness of each story that lends itself for quick evening reading. This book I will add to my library of "must" reads, that I'm creating for my daughter. I'm now reading each of Allende's books one by one.

Book Description
Diez cuentos de Eva Luna (Ten Stories of Eva Luna) is an anthology of 10 short stories by the renowned Chilean writer, Isabel Allende. Best known for her novel, The House of the Spirits, Isabel Allende is the first Latin-American woman writer to be widely published and translated. Her unique style has now gained her a reader acceptance on a par with contemporary Latin-American male writers. Designed to be used at the intermediate or advanced level, Diez cuentos de Eva Luna also includes a concise review of key elements of grammar. The stories in this anthology are all highly readable and deal with a broad range of traditional Spanish-American literary themes: love, hate, vengeance, justice, oppression, solidarity.
Customer Reviews:
Grammar and literature.......2001-08-04
Grammar is always a difficult and arid subject when somebody is not a lover of grammar. And they are really few. This book is a beatiful solution to teach spanish as a foreingn language or simply as a self-study book. Allende is always fresh in her writing. As a chilean woman and a citizen of the world she knows how to translate her feelings, thoughts and her own experience into words. In addition to her beautiful style is another important matter. The fact that the readers of this book are going to learn a rich spanish that blows between the Pacific Ocean and the Mountains. A spanish that have american motivations, which are, by the way, very well undestood by Isabel Allende. "Un cuento de Isabel Allende es un cuento con olor a fruta". "A story from Isabel Allende is a story that smell like fruits". The evil and the angels of the chilean culture. She knows them well. People who want to learn a good spanish do it because they want to read our writers. Neruda, Mistral, Allende, they live already in the hearts of books lovers. So, we should not separate spanish grammar from spanish literature.

Customer Reviews:
Santa must have been singing..........2006-01-02
Surfin' U.S.A. this past Christmas instead of Jingle Bells because the North Pole had to have melted when he gave the Mrs. this new book by Leslie Kelly. I have loved her writing for years and know I can count on a fantastic story from her every single time. I always hurry to read it and then I'm bummed when it's over. All I can say now is BRING ON THE NEXT ONE!
Thanks Santa!.......2006-01-01
I got this book as kind of a "gag" gift at a work party, and I am so glad I did!!!!! I loved this book so much I went right out and started finding other books by this writer, and other Blaze books too.
The main character Noelle is a really funny kind of sarcastic woman who I could relate to. And I only wish a man like Mark Santori would fall into my dressing room one of these days.
Talk about steamy, this book was among the sexiest I've ever read but it still had such cute, sweet moments too that I was smiling the whole time I read it.
I never wrote a review before but I loved this book so much I wanted to see what other readers thought. I decided I had to jump on board with the other reviewers who gave this book rave 5 star reviews because it absolutely does deserve them. If you like super-sexy funny romance novels you will like this one. Only the "grumpiest" scrooge wouldn't agree.
Christmas is over but you definitely don't want to wait until next Christmas to enjoy this funny, sexy story.
Unwrap Carefully..........2006-01-01
DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS by Leslie Kelly
Was the month before Christmas, when parties are held and presents are bought.
Noelle could not believe her ears when a stirring in the next dressing room had her blushing.
And when the hunk came crashing into her room, Noelle had nary a stocking on.
But she doesn't care, as she hopes he will come knocking at her chimney.
The children were hanging their stockings with care, when Santa stole their money.
Yes, Santa danced away with money meant for Christmas sugar-plums.
Lo and behold, and lucky for all, Chicago Cop Mark Santori puts on his cap and is on the case.
A ride to the town of Christmas is the call.
There he meets Noelle, his lady from the dressing room.
There was a clatter as she recognizes him, but when he whistles and dances, she knew.
Like a flash, they sprang to bed, going to the moon and back.
More rapid than eagles they came together.
Will their affair be just a flash or is it forever
One by one, the inhabitants of Christmas are introduced. Sue, her belly full with child
And Randy, her devoted husband.
Jeremy, the louse who dare jilt Noelle on Christmas Eve past.
There are many others, who are all in the Christmas spirit.
But who may also be thieves.
When the investigation is met with obstacles in finding the Santa thief, who but St. Mark mounts to the sky, with a sleigh full of toys.
Then in a twinkling moment, he realizes he loves Noelle.
Will he solve the caper
And win the heart of Noelle.
It is Christmas Eve, but there is love and laughter in the air.
Happy Christmas to all
And the best is saved for last.
DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS is the best present of them all.
Puhllleeeezzzz.......2005-12-30
Sorry, people. I bought this book thinking an amusing romp and some wit would ensue.
Well, really. First scene, our heroine is trying on a little cocktail dress, since she has the dubious pleasure of attending a charity gala. As she wriggles, she overhears a couple in the next dressing room - sounds like the guy is helping then done -abandoning his lady. Next scene, our hero crashes into the scantily clad heroine's dressing room.. with predictable results. This is pretty pedestrian stuff. I have deleted the book from my digital locker, so you will have to post if you take umbrage with my grumpiness.

humorous passionate contemporary holiday romance .......2005-12-15
Noelle Bradenton detests Christmas because her memories are all bad. Her opinion is proven when apparently Santa Claus robs the donations given to the Give a Kid a Christmas that her center is running. Chicago Police Detective Mark Santori investigates the theft; he also feels Yuletide is a downer as he finds the holiday season a big hypocrisy with the capitalists owning the season. The robbery fits into his mood; this is an all time low in disgusting human behavior with some Scrooge stealing from needy little kids.
As Mark investigates the theft, he and Noelle are attracted to one another. Noelle figures sex with the cop will be the perfect present for her while he dreams of unwrapping her clothing as the ideal Christmas Eve activity. Neither expected to want the other permanently under a mistletoe, but who will open the box filled with love first.
This humorous passionate contemporary holiday romance is fun to read because of the antics of the "bah humbug" lead duet. Each rejects Christmas until they meet one another and begin to see little miracles all around them. Fans will want to open this terrific blazing inspirational tale long before Christmas arrives.
