Mary Whittaker and Bobby DeSoto have constructed lives for themselves like Popsicle-stick houses: brittle, unfurnished, painstakingly assembled but made to be snapped apart or abandoned in a moment. The main characters of Dana Spiotta's magnificent second novel, Eat the Document, they were once in love, but spend all but a few pages of the book intentionally distant and out of communication--fugitives after executing a political bombing in the '70s that went awry. Moving often, changing their names more than once, they had to cut off any friendship as soon as it blossomed emotionally and seemed to demand authenticity. Now, in the 1990s, Mary's 15-year-old son Jason (a '70s music buff) begins to uncover his mother's dangerous secret. "Incidentally, if you have never stalked someone close to you, I highly recommend it," he confides in his journal, "Check out how it transforms them. How other they become, and how infinitely necessary and justified the stalking becomes when you realize how little you know about them."

More than a portrait of life underground, Eat the Document derives its power from an implicit comparison of '70s radicalism to the pale protests of present-day consumer culture, somehow upholding the idealism and commitment of the earlier period without advocating its violent methods. Spiotta never lets the novel feel like a history lesson or a diatribe. Its social critique is enacted chiefly through Nash (the former Bobby), whose resistance has mellowed to amused observance of the radical Seattle youth who frequent the independent lefty bookstore he runs. Nash redefines the term "activist" by facilitating a number of brilliantly conceived groups that rarely execute their plans. The Radical Juxtaposeurs, for example, "rent films from Blockbuster and dub fake commercials onto the beginnings of the tapes to imply dislocated, ominous, disturbing things," while the Barcode Remixers "made fake bar code stickers that would replace ones. Everything rang up at five or ten cents. This was strictly for the chain, nonunion supermarkets."

Eat the Document moves back and forth in time, like a fishnet pulling through water, tantalizing the reader with glimpses of Mary and Bobby's past. There are plenty of surprises, not so much in the details of the bombing plot but in the shifting culpability of the actors. Above all, this is a grown-up novel about late adolescence, and about what we take with us‹and what we jettison--on the journey from passionate, reckless youth into seasoned (or soiled) middle age. --Regina Marler

Book Description

In the 1970s, Bobby Desoto and Mary Whittaker -- passionate, idealistic, and in love -- design a series of radical protests against the Vietnam War. When one action goes wrong, the course of their lives is forever changed. The two must erase their past, forge new identities, and never see each other again.

Now it is the 1990s. Mary lives in the suburbs with her fifteen-year-old son, who spends hours immersed in the music of his mother's generation -- and she has no idea whether Bobby is alive or dead.

An ambitious and powerful story about idealism, passion, and sacrifice, Eat the Document shifts between the underground movement of the 1970s and the echoes and consequences of that movement in the1990s. It is a riveting portrait of two eras and one of the most provocative and compelling novels of recent years.

Download Description

Dana Spiotta, whom Michiko Kakutani called "wonderfully observant and wonderfully gifted...with an uncanny feel for the absurdities and sadness of contemporary life" (The New York Times), has written a bold and moving novel about a fugitive radical from the 1970s who has lived in hiding for twenty-five years. Eat the Document is a hugely compelling story of activism, sacrifice, and the cost of living a secret.

4 out of 5 stars Blessed from page 1.......2007-09-01

A far-ranging, thoughtful, compelling exploration of Fitzgerald's great themes of lost youth and the futile American pursuit of self-reinvention, this time through the prism of two Seventies radicals gone underground and the withering of their cultural legacy. It also works as an affecting lament for a new generation that wanly mimics the commitment of its predecessor, a commitment whose missteps led inexorably to the detachment and cynicism it decried.

Incidentally, Jason's fixation on the Beach Boys is not a needless digression. It's a crucial link between his mother's past and his present. The Beach Boys represent a wide-eyed youth that serves as the vessel on which Jason negotiates between the Scylla of his mother's wrecked idealism and the Charybdis of the arch hipness of his peers.

2 out of 5 stars Unreadable.......2007-08-06

I bought this book because the NY Times recommended it. As and ex-radical, SDS'er I'm very interested in the topic but the writing is dull and drags and is putting me to sleep. I don't know if I can even finish it.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but ending peters out.......2007-06-21

This is a good read - very good attention to details, informative, a little repetitive in the way that political people can be -- some of the characters just repeat what others have said, but that is not hard to believe. Mary and Bobby create new lives for themselves after a radical act goes wrong. The book mostly follows Mary's progress toward a "normal" life, with a son and a new, bland identity. In places, Mary seems like a split personality, and this is a nice touch that could have been more extensively used. My big complaint with this book is that the ending was a real disappointment. All that build-up and then it's over so soon, without any real satisfaction between the characters, or any telling of their eventual fates. Also, the character of Mary's son was a little too much, too intelligent, too competent for a 15-year-old vinyl head. It seems that Spiotta just gave up on the book at this point, and that is too bad. It could have been great, but after a long, fraught journey, this book really needed a strong ending.

2 out of 5 stars Oversold.......2007-03-25

Reviewers' raves -- particularly the NY Times' -- prompted my purchase and expectation...and disappointment. While the writing is stylish, the plot is so obvious as to remove the incentive to turn the page.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Premise with a Few Flaws.......2007-01-15

Eat the Document is a story with a great premise: What happens twenty years down the road to those who are forced, through their own actions, to go underground and live lives very different than they might have? Spiotta takes two radical protestors from the early 1970s and follows them both immediately after a disastrous event and also into the 1990s, as they try to come to grips with who they are. How much does the past define us? Would we do the same things over again? Spiotta answers these questions well through the use of several intriguing characters, and she brings the tale full circle by the time the ride is over.

Mary Whitaker finds herself on the run and alone in the early 70s, separated forever from her love, Bobby Desoto, after the two plan a protest in what was supposed to be an empty house. Forced to change her name and her appearance, we follow Mary as she becomes someone else, a person who can never go home again, nor settle for long in one place. As the story unfolds, we meet her fifteen year old son, Jason, who is able to begin to piece together the mystery of his mother's life. Additionally, we follow the story of Nash, who runs a comic book store, and the neo-protestors of the 1990s; all of these plots come together until Mary is forced to make a decision about her life today.

Spiotta's tale is well thought out but sometimes a little too "out there" to feel realistic. While the events could happen as she suggests, the characters don't always make sense in some of their actions, and the dialogue is stilted at times. But overall this is a well-done novel, and thought-provoking to say the least. Overall I enjoyed this one, but I can't help but feel that something was missing; probably much the same feeling Mary experienced about her own life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-05-05

Very well written, and was much like the masterpiece of all romance novels, A TOUCH OF VELVET.
I thought Dove was adorable, tough, genius, and romantic, all the things that make for a great hero. This was my first book by this author, so I was a bit surprised the heroine had had so many lovers; the fact that Dove wasn't taken aback by this showed what a wonderful, non-judgmental man he truly was. The book was a little bit too long, but it was truly nothing short of magnificant.

3 out of 5 stars Not as satisfying as her others........2006-08-26

This one didn't appeal to me as much as "Games of Pleasure". For one, I didn't care for the period in which it was set. Just my personal preference. I don't like my heroes in wigs, stockings, and buckled shoes.
Also, however much implied, I didn't feel the chemistry and the longing I was anticipating between the protagonists.
I do so enjoy Ms. Ross' "experienced" heroines. It's a refreshing break from the norm and shows that she isn't afraid to step outside the box of this genre.
Still a pleasing read, but not one of my favorites.

1 out of 5 stars Boring book, boring characters.......2006-07-08

I decided to get this book since the reviews was positive. I hate to say it but this book was very boring. I didn't find it erotic at all, what part was it erotic? The story plot was boring, the characters were boring and the sex scenes as limited as it was was boring. The sex scene wasn't even in there til the very end of the book. And not even the sex scene was appealing.

She's defintly not for readers who enjoy Laurens, or Kleypas. Far from it. So if you happen to stop by at a used bookstore, and you've extended your books written by authors that you enjoy reading from, take a peak at ross' books and then decide if you want to take to time to read a tedious wordy book.

2 out of 5 stars Overlong, florid melodrama.......2006-06-26

This book was way too long. In it, the author felt the need to describe everything, no matter how small or trivial, in unnecessarily excruciating detail. I lost count of the number of times she waxed poetic about the sky, the snow, the weather, the blades of grass, everything. There was so much florid, dull, pointless description. And did she have to keep repeating descriptions of the characters' physical appearances? I mean, yeah, I get it, the heroine has eyes the colour of lapis lazuli -- you don't have to write 'he looked into her lapis lazuli gaze' or whatever five times a chapter! This book went on for nearly 400 pages when it could have been done in 250 or less, the result of which would have been a far more gripping, exciting story, and one that would have wasted far less of my precious time in reading it!

The first 100 pages were tediously dull. Then the book got a bit more interesting for a while, before returning to dullness again. This pattern was repeated over and over. The storyline was often silly, too. The supposedly dramatic moments were more like melodrama than drama, and the author's florid, overlong writing style stole away most of the urgency and excitement from the pivotal plot points. The dialogue was clearly intended to be witty and highbrow (or at least what this writer imagines witty and highbrow conversation to be!), but suffered from not being tight or intelligent enough, and lapsed into obscurity, absurdity and stupidity far too frequently. Also, the characters very frequently laughed at each other's supposedly humourous comments...problem was, most of those comments were just not at all funny. More jokes missed the mark here than in an amateur open-mike night at a local standup comedy venue. To give credit where credit is due, occasionally the author got it right...on two occasions I laughed out loud at lines so funny they practically floored me. But two humorous quips in nearly 400 pages was just not enough to make me think that this book was worth my time.

There were a lot of flaws, too, like when the characters went on about the wonders of spring...in February.

I also didn't really feel much empathy for the characters. Oh, okay, I'll admit, Sylvie wasn't so bad -- she was at least a strong, independant woman who could mostly cope on her own, which is refreshing in a romance. And at least the Duke of Yveshire, even though he was supposed to be the hero's arch enemy, was a three dimensional character who was allowed to be seen for his virtues as well as faults. That was good. But the hero, Dove, was so maddeningly arrogant. He had a very high opinion of himself and expressed it constantly. According to him he was pretty much the greatest ever lover, fighter, companion and giver of parties, and was irresistible to all women and quite a lot of men as well. He thought he was God's gift, and not even his penchant for doing charitable work could really make me like him. He was just too perfect, and too keen to tell everyone that he was. I prefer my heroes to be a little more flawed and humble. In the end, I rather preferred the Duke of Yveshire to the hero, which probably shouldn't happen in a romance where we are supposed to like the hero the best out of all the men in it.

This book dragged on and on for me like a rainy day, with only occasional bursts of sunshine to liven it up. But then, everyone else seems to have given it a glowing review. Am I not a very good judge of books? Or is it that everyone else who has written a review here has MUCH lower literary standards than I? Is it that most people are happy with mediocrity? Or am I too much of a nit-picker? I'm sure you'll draw your own conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars Not your usual stuffy romance novel!.......2006-05-18

I have only been reading Romance Novels for the past four years, but am devouring them at the rate of two a day. This one is really OUTSTANDING. If you like Lisa Kleypas and Mary Jo Putney this one is right up your alley.
The writing is incredibly achingly wonderful, the characters very finely drawn. And the foundling really is a foundling, not the suddenly discovered great-grand child of the Dowager Duchess of Whoever, recognizable by the striking eyes, etc...This book sent me to the paperback exchange, to EBAY and to Amazon to corral everything she has written. I have now read, The Dark Prince, but is not as fine as this one. But well worth the read. She also has some fine things under her other name, Jean R. Ewing.

5 out of 5 stars Back on form again.......2007-07-17

I felt that the last couple of books in this series weren't as strong as what they were, but this book puts Holly, Rowdy and Kimi right back on track. Holly is sans Steve, and she is convincing herself that she doesn't miss him. She gets involved with some dog walkers, and Rowdy and her meet a vicious Golden Retriever (that's an oxymoron isn't it). When the owner of the Golden is found shot, Holly finds herself trying to find out who the murderer is. There are lots of new quirky characters, and we see some of the old ones too. The book moves along swiftly, and I enjoyed immenseley

5 out of 5 stars I'm a cat person.......2007-07-01

Don't get me wrong. I'm a confirmed cat person. But a dog-loving friend who's never read my cat mysteries mentioned Susan Conant. Out of curiosity, I picked up THE WICKED FLEA. I think I'm hooked.

Susan Conant tells a good story, and she tells it well. Her Holly Winter is chatty, opinionated, feisty, and downright likeable. I can't wait to devour another Conant book, rather like Kimi the Malamute and the rat-tail-infested french fries. [That's all I'm going to say about that particularly satisfying sub-plot].

So, cat-lovers of the world, let's step for once out of our self-imposed cat-book limitations and read a GASP!! doG-centered book. It's worth taking the leap.

3 out of 5 stars one genuine emotion.......2007-01-30

Holly used to be fun to read. Her enthusiastic gushing, where she name dropped everything from trainers to dog food, might have been naive in some respects, but at least it was amusing and upbeat and her descriptions of dog behavior was spot on. But then the series took a negative turn, and love of dogs seemed to be superceded by digust of humans. The villians didn't just do bad deeds, but their homes, clothes, hygiene and personal habits were described in unpleasant details. I keep reading the series, hoping it will upturn again, but the negativity continued into this book, overwhelming the enthusiasm and the love of dogs. What was once just a few paragraphs from every chapter, has now taken over. The action takes place in a dog park, and a shrink's office, but neither the victim, nor the villians, nor many of the other characters, including most of the dogs are palatable. I was doggedly reading toward the end, for there was one small subplot that had value in it and that spoke of the old enthusiastic happy Holly, the description of Rowdy being bred to Emma, unfortunately just a few email asides. The various other plots wound their unredeeming ways, victims, villians and side characters no more likable or interesting at the end than at the beginning. But when Rowdy's puppies are finally born, the Holly who seemed lately buried in carpy nastiness broke down and cried, wailed as she put it, for the puppy she could not have. That catharsis was the only genuine writing and emotion in the book. The rest seemed makework but this made me almost like Holly again. Write more of that.

3 out of 5 stars My least favorite of the series.......2004-08-10

In this book, I was upset to find my old pal Holly had turned into a real bitch (of the arrogant woman variety) Had to go back and re-read "Creature Discomforts"to find her excuse. I was still offended by her snotty & snobbish condesension toward pet people. OK,I confess that as one of the much maligned pet people, I actually look down my nose at silly show people, not to mention my distaste for breeders. We're still in agreement in our low opinion of backyard breeders and high opinion of rescue organizations. I was also pleased at the renewal of the romance with the marvelous Steve. I had pretty much given up on the series following the aforementioned "Creature Discomforts" in which she rejected the darling man once too often, pushing him into taking up with and marrying a real slimeball dog hater.

So,much as I disliked this book, I am looking forward to "Bride & Groom" and seeing how they manage to merge their canine families. I'm also anxious for updates on some of the other secondary characters. Poor Kevin was still in the hospital when last seen in "The Dogfather", and both he and Rita the shrink had budding romances going.

5 out of 5 stars Back on track, hooray hurrah!.......2003-12-15

After being badly disappointed in the previous installment, I was hesitant.

And wonderfully surprised to find that Ms. Conant has returned! Even though her protaganist holds a dim view of "pet owners", I still really enjoy the characterization. This book seems to have a lighter touch on the personal troubles Holly is facing; something I prefer. Worth the risk!

Book Description

What made Lincoln’s hat stand up? Did Chairman Mao keep a Little Black Book? In this collection, 21 wickedly gifted writers indulge their imaginations — and ours — by eavesdropping on the sex lives of the famous. Historical characters ranging from rock stars and film icons to royalty and men of science become the focus of erotic desire.

Lynda Schor’s “Seduction” follows Warren Beatty on his tireless erotic journey, with characters like Joan Collins and Joyce Carol Oates chiming in on his legendary prowess. In “The Ballad of Scott and Zelda,” Maxim Jakubowski traces the passion and the slow, bitter disconnection of those idols of the Jazz Age. “Love, Zora,” by Fiona Zedde, is a graceful, poetic evocation of a young woman’s affair with Zora Neale Hurston. Editor Mitzi Szereto brings together a playful and varied collection, not only gratifying our curiosity about acknowledged sex symbols like Marilyn Monroe and Rudolph Valentino, but exciting readers with the imaginary adventures of such unlikely figures as Toulouse Lautrec, Sigmund Freud, and God.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good news for naughty readers.......2007-05-17

Sometimes, no matter how good we try to be in our daily lives, we can't resist the urge to indulge in a little naughtiness.

And along comes Wicked: Sexy Tales of Legendary Lovers. Editor Mitzi Szereto has pulled together an eclectic mix of stories inspired by the not-so-true lives of some of history's sexiest symbols.

While not everyone will be inclined to read erotica, for those who are willing there's something for every taste in this anthology. Stories run the gamut from humour ("Elvis, Axl, and Me") to graphic ("The Ballad of Scott and Zelda").

Writing styles--and talents--also vary, but that tends to be true of most multi-author anthologies. Overall, however, I found several literary quality stories within these pages. "Eva Braun's Last Tragic Abortion" stands out as one of the most compelling pieces.

Szereto understands that there's more to erotica than sex. Without a cohesive plot and compelling characters, you're left with base [...]. If you don't already know the difference, you need to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A top of the line collection.......2005-07-02

Wicked: Sexy Tales of Legendary Lovers is an engaging and entertaining mix of sexy stories that offers so much more than the typical erotica collections you tend to see around. This is the first anthology of its kind and the content is wholly original, with standard of writing well above excellent. Editor Mitzi Szereto has pulled together a skilled group of writers from around the globe and they have taken to the task like gangbusters, speculating on the lives of the famous and infamous, giving readers a generous glimpse into the bedrooms of those we're often wondered about, and even those we have not, with a cast ranging from Elvis to Marilyn to Valentino, and, if you can believe it, Eva Braun and Adolph Hitler! Through these classy tales we get a real sense of the characters, both in bed and out. Wicked works both a collection of erotica and as a collection of short stories. Suitable for erotica lovers and readers who simply appreciate good fiction. Buy it! You'll love it!!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ anthology.......2005-06-13

I've never come across anything quite like this book. Editor Mitzi Szereto is already well-known for her innovative concepts, and she's REALLY outdone herself with this one. She's gathered together a pool of talented writers from across America and Europe who definitely know their stuff. There's no hackneyed porn writing going on here -- just top of the line erotic fiction. Excellent. Truly excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly engaging and original -- a fine collection.......2005-06-12

Like Szereto's other books, she's once again hit the jackpot with Wicked. The concept here is speculative erotic fiction, with famous people through history as the focal point. It's easy to see that the contributors have done their work, incorporating a sufficient amount of fact with a healthy helping of sexy speculation. The subjects range from Rudolph Valentino and Marilyn Monroe to Salvador Dali, Elvis Presley and the man who assassinated President McKinley. This is erotic fiction that is intelligent, original, polished and arousing. Unlike most anthologies in the erotica line, there is nothing cliched or redundant here. It's quality all the way!

5 out of 5 stars Quality Erotic Fiction.......2005-06-01

I've read previous anthologies by this editor and I always return to her work because I know it will deliver the goods. The stories she selects are compelling, superbly written, and aimed at an intelligent audience. The erotic content ranges from the seductive to the powerful. And, unlike many other anthologies, the stories here will stay with you for months after you've read them.
Wicked: Sexy Tales of Legendary Lovers covers a broad time-scale and a wide range of historical legends. Imagining each of these personalities as a sexual creature provides an insight into their lives that is seldom considered. This title takes pride of place on my bookshelf and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting, entertaining and erotic read.
