In the early days of the Second World War, before Benito Mussolini invaded Greece, Dr. Iannis practices medicine on the island of Cephalonia, accompanied by his daughter, Pelagia, to whom he imparts much of his healing art. Even when the Italians do invade, life isn't so bad--at first anyway. The officer in command of the Italian garrison is the cultured Captain Antonio Corelli, who responds to a Nazi greeting of "Heil Hitler" with his own "Heil Puccini," and whose most precious possession is his mandolin. It isn't long before Corelli and Pelagia are involved in a heated affair--despite her engagement to a young fisherman, Mandras, who has gone off to join Greek partisans. Love is complicated enough in wartime, even when the lovers are on the same side. And for Corelli and Pelagia, it becomes increasingly difficult to negotiate the minefield of allegiances, both personal and political, as all around them atrocities mount, former friends become enemies, and the ugliness of war infects everyone it touches.
British author Louis de Bernières is well known for his forays into magical realism in such novels as The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts, Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord, and The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman. Here he keeps it to a minimum, though certainly the secondary characters with whom he populates his island--the drunken priest, the strongman, the fisherman who swims with dolphins--would be at home in any of his wildly imaginative Latin American fictions. Instead, de Bernières seems interested in dissecting the nature of history as he tells his ever-darkening tale from many different perspectives. Corelli's Mandolin works on many levels, as a love story, a war story, and a deconstruction of just what determines the facts that make it into the history books. --Alix Wilber
Book Description
Extravagant, inventive, emotionally sweeping,
Corelli's Mandolin is the story of a timeless place that one day wakes up to find itself in the jaws of history. The place is the Greek island of Cephallonia, where gods once dabbled in the affairs of men and the local saint periodically rises from his sarcophagus to cure the mad. Then the tide of World War II rolls onto the island's shores in the form of the conquering Italian army.
Caught in the occupation are Pelagia, a willful, beautiful young woman, and the two suitors vying for her love: Mandras, a gentle fisherman turned ruthless guerilla, and the charming, mandolin-playing Captain Corelli, a reluctant officer of the Italian garrison on the island. Rich with loyalties and betrayals, and set against a landscape where the factual blends seamlessly with the fantastic,
Corelli's Mandolin is a passionate novel as rich in ideas as it is genuinely moving.

Noble, warm and sad.......2007-06-03
This is an excellent book - take it's story, language, spirit, or anyhting else - full with true passion and kind wisdom.
An epic novel.......2007-05-03
In this masterpiece, Louis de Bernières portrays the fate of the small Greek island of Cephallonia and its inhabitants during a time span ranging from before the second World War to the 1990s. There is a flurry of characters drawn with care and humour. Dr Iannis with his unsuccessful attempt at writing "The New History of Cephallonia", his daughter Pelagia, affectionately nicknamed Koritsimou, her lover Megalo Velisarios "self-proclaimed as the strongest man who has ever lived", the ebullient father Arsenios, the pathetic soldier Carlo Piero Guercio and of course Captain Antonio Corelli the mandolin player who manages to win Pelagia's heart almost as soon as he arrives on the island.
It is a moving account of Cephallonia during the second World War when it was occupied by German, Italian and British forces. The author pictures the same horrors of war which have been described many times in other novels but he does so in an original way which, interestingly enough does by no means lack in humour. The scenes are poignant and the characters are very lively and one can't help feeling a strong empathy for those Greek islanders. The chapter called "The Duce" featuring a vitriolic characterization of Mussolini is a true delight. A novel which can be recommended without reservations what so ever to readers interested in excellent literature.
Corelli's Mandolin.......2007-04-16
I won't repeat what everyone else has said so far about the plot, the author's prose, etc.
I will say that it is wonderfully written. Funny at times, humanistic, gritty and real. There are times where you almost die of laughter, but you will also get very close to them, feeling as if the events in the story are happening to you, not a character on a page. De Bernieres brings a lot of insight, warmth and humor to even something as trivial as keeping a pet mouse in your pocket or filling a jeep full of steaming dung.
Now that I've got you curious, go read it. :P
Brilliant.......2007-03-12
By far the best book of fiction I have read in the past three years. I simply could not put it down. Acquired while waiting to transfer aircraft, without any knowledge of the book or later film, this piece touched every emotion without being maudlin, preachy, or cute. Perspective on man's humanity and inhumanity, told from multiple viewpoints and in multiple voices. Especially meaningful as we try to understand events in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each phrase must be slowly savored for its complexity and beauty.
Disappointing, yet drawn in by the end.......2007-02-14
I expected to love this book, but the first half of the novel alternated between great chapters and ones that either confused me of left me unengaged. The bottom line is that I was only drawn into the stories of some of the characters. After 200 pages, I considered not even finishing the book. I chose to stay with it, and the second half of the novel was much more engaging, focusing on the characters that I cared the most about. Maybe my expectations were too high. After loving Middlesex and Eleni, both books that made Greece come alive, I expected the same from this novel. I think that this novel tried to do too much. It succeeded in enough ways that I'm glad I read it, but my recommendation is much less strong than that of most readers. If you like epic historical novels and can patiently wait for this novel to develop, this might be a good read for you.

#2 FOLLOW-UP TO THE BAREFOOT BRIDE .......2006-09-16
"Poor Wasted"!
Really got a kick out of the determined "Patch" Kendrick in traveling [which couldn't be easy] to Oakville, Texas from Montana. She was tired of waiting for Ethan Hawk to show up and claim her as his bride.
Of course she doesn't have a clue of what his life has been like for the past 8 years.
Ethan Hawk became a man that Patch could still love even if her memories were of a 25 year old man. She has finally grown up but still retains some of the qualities that endeared her to Hawk.
She gets to meet Ethan's sister, Leah and his mother, Nell.
His friends Frank Meade and Boyd Stuckey show up.
Frank is escorting Merielle Trahern in town when Patch bumps into them.
Her re-introduction to Ethan was a revelation to her in the shoot-out.
We meet some great secondary characters that flesh out the plot - Jackson Trahern planning to kill Hawk - his mother, Nell appeared to be on her death bed - Patch looks up her mother's father - Patch still collects wounded animals and connects with Leah over them - Boyd keeps showing up and intends to marry Patch - Ahhhh! and then we have the mystery of the bounty hunter, Cameron Calloway - [And who the devil needs sizzle. Characters never fall in love the same way we imagine.]
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - just a bit much of PMS - Look for Cam's story in THE INHERITANCE with a trip to England. What a way for a bounty hunter to go.
Wonderful Historical Romance .......2005-09-29
I happen to be a huge fan of john johnston. This book was wonderful and makes you feel like you are there with the characters and not reading the book. I also love how john johnston will have a character in one book i.e. Patch and then branch off and have another book that is Patch's Story. EXCELLENT MUST READ
Sweet and fun.......2002-12-08
I liked this book. It didn't have everything I usually look for in sizzling romance novels, but it kept be turning the pages. And I cared about the charaters. If your looking for a real sizzling page turner try "Anything, My Love" by Cynthia Simmons.
Waste of time and money.......2001-11-27
I rarely write negative reviews but I make the exception here. This is not one of her better books. The characters are one-dimensional, the plot (which looked promising) became implausible quickly and got worse as the book went on. (I'm angry at myself for finishing it when I knew it was poorly written within the first 100 pages.) Patch is an interesting woman but Ethan's character has no real focus. The recovery of the victim in the crime Ethan is wrongly accused of is so sudden and happens so easily you wonder what took 17 years!?
The cover promises "an amusing and imaginative romp" from Affaire de Coeur but if you want this kind of read try Julia Quinn, Sabrina Jeffries, Julia London (all 5 of her books are wonderful), Kinley MacGregor, Maggie Osborne (anything written AFTER 1993), Gaelen Foley. Now these woman can write!
I loved it!!.......1999-04-29
This was an excellent book! I stayed up till 2:30 in the morning finishing it. Ethan and Patch were so perfect for each other, and I thought the plot was wonderful!

Like Rollercoasters? You'll Love this!.......2007-07-05
- "The Bad Luck..." series is awesome! I am pretty much a Historical Medieval or Regency England reader but a friend gave me one book in this series and I was hooked! I read all of them in like a month total.
- I just finished "Her Outlaw." This is what I love to read: smiles, tears, laughs, a few obstacles to overcome, clean wholesome 'old fashioned' kisses and sex...this series has it all! I can't say enough! The 3 "McBride Menace" sisters each have their own story of course but there is also a main plot that weaves and connects them all together as well. "Her Outlaw" is the final installment. It's rare that movies or books get better with each installment but this one sure does!
- The worst thing about this author: I have to wait a year to start reading about "The Bad Luck Bridegrooms." =)
fun frolic starring the chief menace.......2007-05-02
In 1897 in London Emma McBride Tate wonders how a wild woman like her could ever learn to be sedate. The Fort Worth resident knows the townsfolk back home still consider her as the ring leader of the McBride Menaces. The widow knows when her spouse died from pneumonia, the menace died with her. Still she thinks once a menace, always a menace so Emma seduces Highland visitor Alistair "Dair" MacRae. However, when he slinks away with her necklace she comes after him with wild abandon holding up his carriage to recover her necklace.
Dair wants Emma, but needs her necklace that he assumes has ties to the death of his mother. However, though he desires the passionate hell-cat, he fears telling her the truth about his quest as someone close to her may have been involved with what he believes is the murder of his mom. Still as Emma sheds her respectability, she believes she is the one to destroy the McBride bad luck curse as she has found love; now all she needs is to persuade the Scot and find the Sisters' Treasure unaware that someone has plans to keep the negative streak alive with her death
The final round two of the Menaces historical romances is a delightful tale of love with a touch of the paranormal caused by Ariel's curse. The story line is classic McBride bad luck though Emma dears to flaunt Victorian society with her seduction. Readers will enjoy the chief menace's romance with the Scot who steals first her necklace and then her heart with this fitting and wonderful climax to fun late nineteenth century romances.

As always, another great........2005-05-02
Bk. 7-Texas Brand series. As always a welcome addition to this series.
Elliot is delivering an ancient artifact to the university when he is involved in an accident. Somehow he is sent back in time 120 years. He saves Esmerelda from a hanging by his ancestors & travels forward 120 years with Esmerelda.
I really enjoyed this book. There is one very funny part after they arrive back that has me in stitches.
Next (bk. 8) is Angel meets the badman about Sara & Jake.
Good Time Travel Romance.......2001-01-11
Nothing makes me madder than people who pick up a time travel romance, then complain that it's a time travel romance! I'm glad Ms. Shayne was able to bring something different to the Brand series for a change. No, The Outlaw Bride isn't as good as some of her paranormals but it is a welcome change from the standard plots most Brands find themselves in. I was frustrated by Esmerelda much of the time and so many of her actions are irrational. The Outlaw Bride also involves something that bothers me about several of these Brand books. They involve someone who falls in love with a Brand and is then treated with suspicion, disrespect and outright meanness. I keep wondering why anyone would want to marry into this family if it means you have to be pilloried to get in! I did like Elliott tho, the opening of this book was chilling and I couldn't stop turning the pages. It wasn't great. I did think it was a pretty good read.
A Bad Ending To A Great Story Line.......2000-02-22
I have all the other books in this series. I was thrilled when it came to my local bookstore. But I was VERY disappointed. All the other books in this series are believeable. I don't know why the author strayed from the formula, and gave her fans something totally off the wall. If I wanted science fiction, I watch the X-Files. The romance part between the heroine and the hero was great. But who would actually believe she came across time from the last century! Save it for Mulner and Scully!
Geez, folks, lighten up!.......2000-02-01
This is not a bad book. Its premise requires a leap of faith...but isn't that what love is about? I found the concept of love being more powerful than time, of someone's proper place being in fact completely outside of everything they had ever known, intriguing. And, as usual with Shayne's books, the characters are endearing and the plot is a page-turner. The perfect reading material for cold winter nights.
Not her best, but consistent with the rest of this series........1999-12-01
She has written much better books, but the quality was fairly consistent with the rest of the "Texas" series.

humor for mother of the bride.......2007-07-23
I got this book for my mom. The title caught my eye because she had a horrible time finding a dress for my brother's wedding and now she has to look once again for my wedding! She loved it and found it very humorous, basically read it in one night. The only thing I wished is that it would have had a checklist or something like that for the mother of the bride. Overall, great book!
Mother of the Bride: The Dream, the Reality, the Search for a Perfect Dress.......2007-07-05
What a great book to give the 1st time mother of the bride at the bridal shower. It puts things in perspective! I recommend they read it a couple of days before the wedding.
Survival guide for M.O.B!!.......2005-05-20
This book was great. It is written with humor and insight, and I probably would not have appreciated it before this adventure we call "being the M.O.B". It is definately worth every penny.
You'll laugh, you'll cry -- you know the drill =).......2003-06-18
This is basically an autobiographical comic short story, with wacky illustrations to add to the fun. I bought it as a Mother's Day present for my mom right after I got engaged, and we read it aloud together in our favorite spot on the front porch, passing the book when one of us was overcome with laughter -- or tears. Ilene Beckerman can really write, and she does it with devastating humor and tear-jerking poignancy as she explores -- from the front row view of the mother of the bride -- the fun, the fights, the work, the tears, the trials, and often the complete insanity that all contribute to the creation of a beautiful wedding. At the same time, she critically (and beautifully) examines the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter. This short little gem will help you remember the things you appreciate most about your mother, your daughter...or both.
A Great Gift.......2000-10-12
When my daughter became engaged, I got three copies of this book as gifts. I loved it so much that I have given away the two extra copies that I received to friends who will soon be MOBs!
The book is so real, so funny, so poignant. It succinctly summed up the relationship between mothers and daughters as it detailed the intricate and involved planning process for today's weddings. I loved the way Beckerman gave us glimpses of her daughter's growing-up years.
I felt every feeling the author was feeling --- I laughed, I cried, and I called my daughter to read portions to her.
And today....I found the perfect dress!!!

Outlaw with a Conscious.......2003-07-14
Set in Texas in the 1870's, Tanner Burnett is disguised as a banker on a stage bound for Fort Worth. When the outlaws he works with rob the stage, Elizabeth Anderson is accidentally shot. Tanner rushes her back to San Antonio to find a doctor. Dealing with ghosts from his past, Tanner cannot cope with another death on his conscious. He pretends to be Beth's husband as he cares for her in a San Antonio hotel room. Beth is traveling out west as a mail order bride. She is also escaping ghosts from her past. When Tanner escorts Beth to her Fort Worth, he encounters the family he has not seen in over ten years. Beth finds she is engaged to Tanner's younger brother, Tucker Burnett. Tanner and Beth do not know that Beth never wrote to Tucker, she actually was writing to his meddling mama, Eugenia Burnett.
It is a touching family reunion and all parties must adjust to the changes of the past eleven years. Tanner and Beth both have secrets from their Civil War tragedies. Everyone has to learn how to trust again. This installment in the "Burnett Brides" trilogy is leaps and bounds better than the first, The Rancher Takes a Wife. It contains the emotional development that the first is sadly lacking, but the atmosphere is much darker because it deals with heavier issues. 4.25/5
Another winning Western historical from McDaniel!.......2001-01-24
Tanner Burnett hadn't been home in a long time, and he wasn't planning on a trip now. But when an innocent young woman is shot during a holdup he was involved in, Tanner feels responsible for getting her to her destination as soon as she is able to travel again. The young outlaw didn't plan on having his heart captured by his beautiful victim. But he knew a life such as the one he lead had no room for love, after all he had been on the run for years. But Tanner is an honorable man, even if he is an outlaw, so he fufills his promise to see her safely to Fort Worth, and right into the bosom of his long-lost family. Seems the lady was to be married to his brother Travis, the sheriff!
Elizabeth Anderson is on the run herself from an unsavory past. Putting herself up as a mail-order bride, she has been corresponding with Mr. Burnett of Fort Worth, Texas and has agreed to become his bride. But when she is waylaid by the hold-up and forced to spend her recuperation time in the company of the handsome and sexy Tanner, she finds she regrets her decision to marry the unknown Mr. Burnett. While she has fallen in love with Tanner, Elizabeth is determined to make a new life for herself, and sacrifices her chance at love for honor. She insists on Tanner taking her on to Fort Worth, where she will keep her promise to become Mrs. Burnett. Imagine her surprise when she discovers Tanner is also a Burnett!
Sylvia McDaniel brings us another intriguing story of love in the Old West with her second installment of The Burnett Brides series. The Outlaw Takes A Wife is a tale filled with sensual romance, heartwrenching drama, and a wonderful happy-ever-after ending. Everything a great romance needs! McDaniel has also done her historical research of the period, and includes the fascinating tale of the legendary outlaw Sam Bass within this story. Look for the final installment of the Burnett brothers' story in The Marshall Takes A Wife, due out in July, 2001.

A SWEET STORY OF REDEMPTION AND LOVE.......2001-01-22
Beth Anderson is forced to leave behind her childhood home at the end of the Civil War and all its accompanying tradegies. Shamed and alone, she accepts an offer from Texas to become a mail order bride, knowing nothing of Eugenia Burnett and her matchmaking ways. Since Eugenia had success in pairing up her oldest son and his new wife, Rose, the crafty woman decides she'll try to find a good woman for her wayward son Tucker. Eugenia has never given up on her middle son, Tanner who ran off to join the war, even though the Army belives him dead. But no one has seen or heard from Tanner in a decade. But Eugenia is right, Tanner is alive and running with outlaws. He's a dangerous man who figures he's got nothing left to lose. But when a stage robbery attempt goes bad, Tanner does his best to save the stage driver from being shot. Instead, Beth takes the bullet. No matter how hardened Tanner believes his heart is, he can't leave Beth alone to die. So he takes her to San Antonio and cares for her himself. But he does not count on being so drawn to the woman of quiet courage or how deeply her sad past will affect him. Beth is drawn to the man she sees underneath the fast guns and grim eyes. Though they try to resist each other, love is inevitable. It becomes equally complicated when Tanner runs into his youngest brother, Tucker, and discovers Beth is intended for him. The sparks fly and the dialogue is both humorous and poignant in this story of redemption and homecoming. Well worth reading.
A Wonderful, Heart-Warming Story.......2001-01-18
Sylvia McDaniel is now one of my favorite authors. Her books, especially "Outlaw," are fresh and natural. Her people are fun and likeable. This story of a man returning to his family home after a terrible experience with war is poignent and heart-warming.
Very enjoyable story!.......2000-12-27
What a wonderful reading experience! This was a great second story in Ms McDaniel's Ballad trilogy. It was very absorbing and moving as Mama Burnett accomplishes much more than finding a wife for her son, she also has her long lost son returned to her after his abscene of a decade. And quite expertly the third and final story is introduced.....I am definitely anxious for it's release in the summer of 2001.

Prisoner of Passion.......2007-02-03
From back cover: Annie Calhoun thought her luck had run out. Raised by the most notorious gang of outlaws in Texas, she served as their lookout-and she'd been caught by a lawman who looked all too familiar. It had been a few years since Annie had rescued the young Sheriff Elijah Larson from death, but his rugged good looks and cool green eyes had blazed in her memory...and in her dreams.
Eli could't believe it but he owed his very life to the scruffy little vixen he had just captured. He felt compelled to plead her case before the judge, but he wasn't prepared for the court's unusual resolution-marriage. And when he agreed to make her his wife it was to save her neck and turn her into a lady...not into the tantalizing beauty whose innocent seduction would tempt him beyond endurance.
Book Description
He was pure trouble for an honest woman...
Mattie St. Clair knows that Clint Beaudry is a dangerous man the moment she sets eyes on him. Though she refuses the tall, dark, devastatingly handsome gunman a room in her boardinghouse, Mattie cannot turn him away a second time when he is carried to her door critically wounded. It's best if she just lets this troublesome stranger mend and move on- considering the unwanted feelings of desire he stirs up within her whenever he turns his deep, dangerous gaze her way.She was more woman than a man could handle...
This beautiful, strong-willed widow does something special to the hardened ex-marshal with her tender, healing touch -- tempting Clint to reconsider his vow never to let another woman into his perilous life. Despite her stubborn independence, Mattie's barely restrained passion tells him that she's been too long without a good man at her side. And since she and her young son both are in desperate need of a hero, what choice does Clint have -- except to become one?

A Great Love Story!.......2007-08-01
I had read this book twice now. It has been and always will be a keeper for me to re-read until I can't read no more.
The story line is great, the romance is great! Clint was injured and Mattie took care him. Mattie was a widow with a young son named Andy, and Herman, an old man who lived at the boarding house, who up until Clint was the only adult male in Andy's life.
Well anyway, they have a bumpy relationship, but a great love story. The perfect hero, and a stubborn woman, who is very likable.
The book is good and I recomend it to anyone who loves western romance.
Simply Terrific!.......2005-01-24
OUTLAW'S BRIDE is everything tender and endearing! It's truly what one enjoys in a great western love story. You'll enjoy every moment!
Five stars all the way!
Delightful fun........2004-06-02
This MM story, as outlined by other reviewers, is a really enjoyable one day read. The characters are fiesty, stubborn, charming, romantic and full of integrity. You just have to love Clint, a perfect 10! Along with the amusing dialogue, the love scenes are wonderfully done with a heroine who is very aggressive....and not ashamed of it and a man smart enough to appreciate her(...)nature. Good job MM.
ANOTHER BAD BOY BITES THE DUST.......2003-12-27
Low slung gun, all dressed in black, dark, dangerous attitude - Yup, this guy is a gunslinger!
But wait, he is neither pushy or discurtiest - Mattie's refusal to lodge this stranger does not push him to violence.
Herman and Andy are fishing when they hear some shots - they investigate and find the gunslinger back shot. When Andy runs pellmell to Mattie and informs her of their find she sends for Sheriff Atwater and Dr. Kevin Murphy. He is courting Mattie.
One thing leads to another what with Beaudry running a fever and Mattie having to change his dressings and some weeks later spending a day fishing an attraction develops - mostly reawakened lust and emotions that neither wishes to acknowledge.
Clint Beaudry will make no promises until he catches his wife, Emily's killer and Mattie will not force any promises that cannot be kept.
Ah, the monkey wrench gets thrown into the mix when Clint leaves on his search for the rider of the palomino. Then Clint meets up with a bottle of whiskey and comes to a very big decision.
What a great story when Clint finally gives into Sheriff Atwater's request to hold down the fort as he heals.
Yup, you don't want to pass up this story - wonderful characters and great situations leading to a wonderful love story.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- Whoops! Mattie demanded her night. And got it.
Another Great Western Romance From This Talented Author.......2002-05-10
If you love the wild west and romance books set during that time period in history you will not be disappointed with this story.
Mattie is a window that owns a boarding house. Clint is a gunfighter and has bad boy written all over him. Mattie refuses to rent him a room but when he comes back to her boarding house wounded she welcomes him and takes care of him while he heals.
Mattie is drawn to this dangerous man and Clint is not tempted in ways that he should not be. He made himself a promise never to let a woman become important to him or into his life as long as he is a gun-fighter.
MM delivers again in with this story of two hearts looking to love and finding it where they least expect it. Take the time to read this book, you won't be disappointed.
