Book Description

A New York Times Notable Book of the Year
Colette and Alison are unlikely cohorts: one a shy, drab beanpole of an assistant, the other a charismatic, corpulent psychic whose connection to the spiritual world torments her. When they meet at a fair, Alison invites Colette at once to join her on the road as her personal assistant and companion. Troubles spiral out of control when the pair moves to a suburban wasteland in what was once the English countryside. It is not long before the place beyond black threatens to uproot their lives forever. This is Hilary Mantel at her finest--insightful, darkly comic, unorthodox, and thrilling to read.

4 out of 5 stars From the banal to the mundane - a quick overview of today's spiritualists.......2007-02-20

Well, I must say, after laughing my way through Mary Roach's wonderful "Spook," a non-fiction expose of early 20th century spiritualism, I was ready to give Hilary Mantel a try. I was certainly not disappointed. Mary Roach had me in stitches over cheesecloth nasal packing presenting itself as "ectoplasm." Mantel, on the other hand, gave me a spiritualist one could love, an overweight, insecure and tender-hearted medium who puts up with both worldly and supernatural nastiness until her own good deed frees her.

A recent New Yorker article on Mantel gave me the idea that she might have something to tell me, and I was happily right. I was already prepared for the eerie and inexplicable; Mary Roach, however, prepared me for
mediums fortified with cooking sherry and booking rooms in pubs and bowling alleys. As I was completely new to Mantel, I found myself immersed in her unique mix of humor and ugliness. I was just delighted when a grey sock turned up in Colette's dryer (a very ominous sign), and when Al found her new spirit guides to be two little old ladies who required padded drawers on outings.

I'll read Mantel again, that's a certainty. In the meantime, it's four stars for "Beyond Black"...and an unconditional plug for Mary Roach's "Spook," while we're at it!

3 out of 5 stars A very challenginging read.......2007-02-11

I read Mantel`s "A Place of Greater Safety" a long time ago, and recall I found it a fabulous book. I remember it as a "conventional" historical novel, but one written with greater depth of characterization and tightness of plot than perhaps is usual. It suggested a very talented writer in the making

Beyond Black certainly showcases that talent. The book is incredibly well written and original. The prose is never beautiful, but it is biting in a way that befits the novel`s ambiance, setting and themes.

I think it was this recogntition or intuition that what I was reading was special that kept me reading the book, because it was challenging to get through it. It is certainly not easy to empathize with the two main characters, Collette and Allison, to the contrary. It is not easy to get interested in such an outlandish plot, and one so seemingly written by a woman for women. And it was not easy to follow Allison's dialogues with the her ghosts: it took some getting used to until I could figure out what was or wasn't real. And I was a bit disappointed in what I felt was a less decisive ending than I deserved for the all the "effort" I put in.

But despite all these challenges, I'm glad I finished the book and my respect for Mantel has grown. I just hope when I pick up another of her books it takes a bit less effort to enjoy the great talent

2 out of 5 stars well written but not compelling.......2006-10-30

I have read a number of books by Mantel and admire her writing a great deal. She also writes wonderful book reviews for the London Review of Books. However I put Beyond Black down somewhere before the middle. While the unpleasant characters are portrayed with skill and and some sympathy, they remained essentially uninteresting -- small town psychics with small town ideas. The death of Princess Di thrown in didn't help the mix. I wanted something a little deeper or more exciting to wrap my mind around. However I think it is well worth trying Mantel's other books -- she is in general a skilled and fascinating writer.

1 out of 5 stars very poor - approach with caution,.......2006-08-25

This book is poor. If you are looking for a mystery/thriller - or basically a book with a plot - forget it. This book is a series of long meandering musings of two women with a very meager plot. There is no attempt to portray men whatsoever. The only male depictions are fleeting and shallow (one man is characterized by his addiction to car magazines and the others are mostly vicious child abusers).
Although female characters are depicted in more detail, they don't fare much better as they are all ultimately bitter and self-serving. This is a deeply depressing book. There is no note of redemption whatsoever. All social interactions are bombastic confrontations - which would be ok if they were funny or contributed to the plot or character development but there is neither of these things.

All depictions of modern life are stereotypes with no subtlety. There is very little humour or wit despite what you read on the dust jacket and any good editor would have cut at least 100 pages in the middle. I was duped by an alleged vote of confidence from Phillip Pullman on the cover - if this book were a tenth as good as his northern lights trilogy I would have loved it.

The author is evidently clever and has researched the book well but I would not really recommend this book to anyone unfortunately :(

4 out of 5 stars An fun read.......2006-08-09

I approached this book with enthusiasm after having read a number of glowing reviews. The writing is tight and makes it a fast read. The idea of spirits guiding mere mortals, or giving them insight into others' lives, is presented so convincingly that by the end, to the author's credit, you start to wonder whether there are indeed those powers out there (I'm a non-believer). However, if you're looking for a compelling human story with insightful character development, you won't find it here.

This is a fun book, well crafted, and of the times. It's worth a read. It will not be in your mind a year after you've read it, like other highly literary books are. But it gets the four stars for its inventiveness and flights of fancy.

    Product Description

The gifted and rebellious writer Claude McKay grew up in the British West Indies and then moved to the United States. As he traveled from Jamaica to Harlem and then to Europe and Africa, he embraced various causes and political ideologies that made their way into his writings. Brought up as a colonial in the British West Indies, he found racial oppression as an immigrant in the United States. His struggle for self-definition and self-determination was manifest in his writings and laid the foundation for the Harlem Renaissance and negritude movements. African American scholarship in the United States tends to focus on McKay’s American productions, such as his poetry and novels like Home to Harlem, while critics in the Caribbean focus on his works there: novels like Banana Bottom and dialect poetry. This study has undertaken to explore comprehensively the life and works of Claude McKay, framed within colonial and cross-cultural experiences. While dealing with pertinent issues like identity, race, exile, ethnicity, and sexuality, the work examines all the facets of this influential 20th century author, a man trying to solve the problem of his own identity in a world determined to marginalize him.

            4 out of 5 stars Nevil Shute's Australia.......2004-03-29

"Beyond the Black Stump" may be the weakest of the novels set in Australia, but it is still an enjoyable book to read. There are no mystical elements here ("In the Wet") nor has his ability to write dialogue for American English improved any. Having said that, the book has a quickly moving plot, some excellent character development and lots of Shute's dry, killingly funny sidelights. You don't want to miss the Chinese cemetary. And there is a fine twist to the dénoument.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond the black stump.......2001-11-28

The gentle and very English urbanity of Nevil Shute comes through strongly in this work. It is obvious he likes Australia and is not exactly rapt in the US.
His characters, similar to many of the others he has used, vary from the earthy but wise Irishmen who run the station, to the brash yet sensitive young Americans who come to work the oil rig. Central to it all is Shute's archetypal heroine, the English/Australian lass brimming with common sense who gets the heart of the good man...in the end. In the process, our heroine discovers there is more to materialism than meets the eye.
Shute writes lovingly of the Austraian outback, and knowledgeably of airline travel in the fifties. Although his writing is detailed, it is never dull, and he weaves a believable web.
I have most of Shute's work and consider this one of his best; though what an American would think of it is open to question! Buy it and find out.

4 out of 5 stars Good story, characterizations.......2001-05-10

The story of an American man (Stan Laird) who falls in love with a Western Australian girl (Mollie) in the 1950s, but how their cultures can't really allow them to stay together. I'm not so sure I agree with the idea that the theme was materialism vs. spiritualism. For me, it was more, perhaps, the idea that civilization comes with a price tag. That while it can and will bring nicer material things and formal marriage etc, it can also detract from the human spirit as well. The Americans Mollie meets must maintain a certain amount of hypocrisy, apparently, to cope with life. But as Mollie wisely perceives, they shouldn't be judged too harsly for that because civilization has made things more convenient for them, both physically and emotionally. I liked very much her (Schute's) perception that the Americans of 1955 Oregon probably wouldn't welcome the Oregon settlers of 1890 in their homes because, like the contemporary outback Australians, they'd find them too coarse and vulgar.

Schute is a remarkable writer. Traditional, I suppose, but compassionate and insightful. His women characters are very well drawn and, unquestionably, the wisest, toughest and the most admirable ones in the book. Although I found it hard to sypathize with Stan Laird because he seemed like kind of a philistine, Schute showed empathy for him too. A good read.

3 out of 5 stars This book brings out the difference between various cultures.......1999-08-11

This book is an exceptionally crafted one and affected me profoundly. It brings out the disparity between materialism and spiritualism. The characters in this book are very vivid and this helps in the readers' involvement with the story.

Riding the Storm was a great romantic, thrilling ride. As with all the Westmoreland men, Storm was just as hot, romantic and intelligent as the others. Storm reminded me a lot of "Thorn". So, if you liked "Thorn's Challenge" you'll enjoy "Riding the Storm." Thanks Brenda for a great read!

3 out of 5 stars Silly heroine, yummy hero.......2006-07-10

I would give it more stars but for the silly plot devise of a 26 year old woman feeling her biological clock is ticking so decides on artifical insemination, how ridiculous is that. Plus still going for this option after the love/crush of her life declares his love, I wanted to slap her silly. If she was 36 or 40 I could understand the need for A.I. (how about that, make one of these gorgeous Westmorland men fall in love with an older woman for a change!). Apart from that I enjoyed the book, hot, sultry sex scenes, contraception that fails (just like real life) and the typical wedding one month later- lol.

            5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT...*sighing with a smile*.......2006-01-11

YES IT HAS ALOT OF SEX but if you were on vacation and ran in to the crush of your life wouldn't you have alot too if the feelings were mutual but it has a good storyline and i thought the ending was so sweet i wish BRENDA JACKSON would hook up her best friend in the book lisa with a family member a cousin i think that would be good...

Everybody has a different opinion when writting a review if we all had the same reviews or opinions it would be boring. Reviews can sometimes down play a really good book or up play a really bad book its up to us to read the book and judge for ourselfs and draw our own conclusion thats the best thing about a review its like a silent debate....

read this series. I read this series two summers ago when my friend loaned them to me. I was sick most of the summer. Even though I was stuck inside, the books took my mind to out on the ocean, and before I knew it, I felt like I was there swimming and learning about dolphins myself.
~MY ONLY confusion about this series is that when I went to buy the series for myself all the books I found had a different author, same story, same cover, but different author on the front cover. All my friend's books say Lucy Daniels one the front as theauthor, but all the books I find online and in stores have Ben M. Baglio written on the front as the author.
~Can someone please explain this to me?
PS: The last reviewer must know nothing about dolphins or guys b/c most of my friends that are guys are smart and talk a lot and explain things well. Also, I've worked with dolphhins before, the book does not make them unrealistic. Dolphins are very intelligent creatures and every single thing the dolphins in this series did WAS DONE IN REAL LIFE BEFORE by real dolphins, do your research. There are many rescue stories by dolphins and most of the things in this fictional book are based on real things dolphins have done and do. This series teaches you a lot about these wonderful mammals. Read it!

            3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2004-12-04

Dolphin Diaries is a fun, original series about a girl traveling the world looking for dolphins to watch, study, and enjoy with her family. This book is very descriptive, and the characters are very expressive and emotional...which can be good and bad, depending on what the character is saying, and what point they're trying to make. This series is definately for girls between the ages of eight and eleven or twelve. Any older, and you start noticing unrealistic parts and becoming annoyed with characters that are supposed to be everyones' favorites.

The main thing that bugged me about this book was all of the wild dolphins. Dolphins are friendly and smart, I know, but the author makes the dolphins a tad too human-like and unrealistic. The dolphins always seem to fix everything and amaze everyone...all of them, not just the main few.

The characters can also explain too much, especially the men. Most guys aren't big talkers, but most of the guys in this story are always opening their mouthes.

But if you like dolphins, you'll love this series! It is full of facts about dolphins mixed with a very creative storyline.

              A storm’s rage. A woman’s desire.

A man with the power to set them both free.

He can summon lightning at will. Emerge unscathed from the center of a tornado. Strip a woman down to her barest defenses through the sheer force of his sexuality. He’s gorgeous, dangerous, and the target of parameteorologist Haley Holmes’s latest mission. Haley has been dispatched to the Louisiana bayous to investigate the phenomenon known as Remy Begnaud–a man with a gift he never wanted: the ability to control a storm’s fury. But even a woman trained in bizarre weather phenomena has no defense against the electrifying power of the ex—Navy SEAL...a power his enemies would kill to control.

With her agency monitoring their every move, Haley’s job is to seduce Remy, gain his trust–and help him harness his extraordinary gift. But who will protect her from this voracious lover who’s introducing her to a new world of erotic thrills—a man who grows increasingly insatiable with each new weather event? Haley knows a big storm is approaching—and with it will come unexpected delights. But so, too, will the storm unleash her greatest fears: an enemy bent on destroying Remy. And her worst fear of all—falling in love with this magnificent man, then having to betray him.

              5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced erotic romance.......2007-09-17

Riding the Storm is a paranormal erotic romance that pulls the reader into a fascinating world where the race is on to control the world's weather. Remy is a ex-Seal whose sexual desire triggers powerful storms which he can't control. Haley is a parameteorologist who wants to recruit Remy for the agency she works for. But she might have gotten a little more than she bargained for when she and Remy explode sexually.

The chemistry between the two lead characters is powerful and steamy. The book is well-written and engages the reader immediately. The secondary characters, especially Annika and Creed, add even more spice to this novel. Highly recommended for those who enjoy a really good erotic romance.

5 out of 5 stars exhilarating romantic fantasy.......2007-09-04

Only a desperate call from his dad would bring former navy SEAL Remy "T-Remy" Begnaud home especially in this horrendous weather. Although the truth is hurricanes do not disturb him as he has created some nasty storms in his life with his power to control the force of a storm. However, what does bother him is that parameteorologist Haley Marie Holmes is waiting for him at his father's house.

She tries to persuade Remy to let her and her paranormal skilled operatives help him harness his power, but fails even when she tries seduction as the electricity between them ignites the Bayou. Instead he attempts to defuse his power on his own, but instead T-Remy unleashes his gift. Now he needs Haley and her associates to help him harness his out of control storm that makes Katrina look like a drizzle.

This exhilarating romantic fantasy creatively uses paranormal meteorology skills to tell the tale of people with the ability to control the weather. The key to this superb thriller is the flaws each of the lead pair has in their make-up; especially that of T-Remy who wants nothing to do with his power yet finds he is in the eye of the storm. Haley is pulled in two directions as lightning strikes her heart with her attraction to Remy, but is assigned to bring him in voluntarily or not. Fans will enjoy this fine weather thriller although some subplots are left out in the rain for apparently future parameteorological tales.

Just as I suspected Janine Riding's book is every bit as comforting as the devotionals and wisdom she's shared with us for a long time. Having battled my own storm with MCS, CFS and FM for many years I can say that this book would be one of the first things I'd put in the hands of someone who's just been diagnosed with a chronic illness as well as those who's been struggling for years. It will bless you too. I can't think of a better gift for a fellow sufferer! Thank you Janine!

Wow! Very enjoyable devotions on just about any issue. As an MCS sufferer myself I appreciated that the book was specific to those with chemical sensitivity, however the devotions would serve as a blessing to anyone. Once you have read this book it also serves well as a refresher reference.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the chemically sensitive.......2005-02-12

I thoroughly enjoyed Janine Ridings' book, Comfort in the Storm. I also suffer from MCS, so I can certainly relate to the trials and tribulations that affect those of us afflicted with this illness. Janine writes of her personal struggles with this disease, how she has managed to cope, and now brings comfort to others through Biblical devotionals, personal understanding and lack of judgement. Her book can shed light on the realities of this evergrowing disease caused from chemical exposures, while bringing forth much needed hope to fellow sufferers.

              5 out of 5 stars True comfort.......2005-01-20

Just as the title states, Janine Ridings' book is indeed a great comfort. As a sufferer of MCS myself, I found myself looking forward to and being blessed by each new devotion. Her solid Biblical stance and wise counsel make this book a gem. She neither rejects true Biblical healing nor promotes an "automatic" easy believism. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, not only for those with MCS but for any person seeking comfort in this world of storms.

4 out of 5 stars First try at reviewing.......2006-03-19

This is a good code red book. The plot is well-written and quite exciting. Nate is world weary and looking for a place and purpose for himself, Jolene is average Texas woman from small town. The only thing I didn't like was I thought it should have had one more chapter, to complete the story. I felt sort of left hanging at the end. I just started reading the code red books recently and haven't found one yet I didn't like.

3 out of 5 stars Good Read for a Stormy Night.......2005-08-18

Weary and worse for wear, paramedic Nate Kellison jumps at the call to action when help is requested in Turning Point, Texas, under the threat of a hurricane. He is immediately drawn to volunteer Jolene Kannon-Angel, widowed and pregnant. Jolene is impulsive, always rushing to save others at her own peril. Nate is serious and responsible. Both, from the hand of fate, feel a bit cast off from the world, an undesirable prospect for the opposite sex. Yet, each is immediately attracted to the other as they perform feats of derring-do, then seek comfort in each other under the onslaught of a screaming hurricane. They heat up the barn and the sheets, and fall in love, and Nate realizes he's found the place where he belongs.

This Code Red-on-the-road novel was a sweet, old-fashioned romance with a virginal heroine and a world-weary hero who light each other up and have some hot sex. There was more action than longing and pining, though there was a little of that. A few details were overlooked, and, despite the hurricane disaster setting, it was a bit on the fluffy side. Engaging and well-written, though. Sort of a new age fairytale with a small lump of sugar.
