Logan Gonzago Mountstuart, writer, was born in 1906, and died of a heart attack on October 5, 1991, aged 85. William Boyd's novel Any Human Heart is his disjointed autobiography, a massive tome chronicling "my personal rollercoaster"--or rather, "not so much a rollercoaster", but a yo-yo, "a jerking spinning toy in the hands of a maladroit child." From his early childhood in Montevideo, son of an English corned beef executive and his Uraguayan secretary, through his years at a Norfolk public school and Oxford, Mountstuart traces his haphazard development as a writer. Early and easy success is succeeded by a long half-century of mediocrity, disappointments and setbacks, both personal and professional, leading him to multiple failed marriages, internment, alcoholism and abject poverty.
Mountstuart's sorry tale is also the story of a British way of life in inexorable decline, as his journey takes in the Bloomsbury set, the General Strike, the Spanish Civil War, 1930s Americans in Paris, wartime espionage, New York avant garde art, even the Baader-Meinhof gang--all with a stellar supporting cast. The most sustained and best moment comes mid-book, as Mountstuart gets caught up in one of Britain's murkier wartime secrets, in the company of the here truly despicable Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Elsewhere author William Boyd occasionally misplaces his tongue too obviously in his cheek--the Wall Street Crash is trailed with truly crashing inelegance--but overall Any Human Heart is a witty, inventive and ultimately moving novel. Boyd succeeds in conjuring not only a compelling 20th century but also, in the hapless Logan Mountstuart, an anti-hero who achieves something approaching passive greatness. --Alan Stewart, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
William Boyd’s masterful new novel tells, in a series of intimate journals, the story of Logan Mountstuart—writer, lover, art dealer, spy—as he makes his often precarious way through the twentieth century.

The lost generation.......2007-05-15
It is surprising how comparatively little there is written by English authors about the generation who saw the two world wars and the collapse of the Empire, considering the huge interest of their experience to understand the UK as it is now and the astounding number of fascinating individuals that period gave to them. It might be a problem of lack of historical perspective. At any rate, this book is starting to fill this gap.
William Boyd has accomplished what seems to me a considerable feat. His novel is considerably believable and highly entertaining. Don't be deluded by its diary form, Mr. Boyd manages to nest in that style different genres (action, crime, thriller, historical speculation), which grab the reader's attention from first page to last.
His research seems very accurate and his stand is fairly neutral(as far as I know, for instance for the parts referred to Spain and the Spanish War) which also no small accomplishment.
I most enjoyed the portraits of celebrities of the time (Virginia Wolf, the Duke of Windsor, Pablo Picasso, Evelyn Vaughan, etc.),which are portrayed in a subjective light, with a strong accent on their personalities, about which the author takes a bold and well informed stance.
The book doesn't loose it's rhythm at any moment. The sturdiest novel of him I have yet read (which is a list made only of Armadillo, A Good Man in Africa and this one, though)
Too Much and Too Little.......2007-03-23
Let me state up front that as a working professional writer, I generally do not like books about struggling writers, and that bias may have colored my attitude toward this book.
Although I have enjoyed other of William Boyd's novels, this one disappointed. It had all the frustrating qualities of reading a diary without the redeeming quality of being real (i.e. nonfiction). There was little development of the secondary characters that wandered through these pages. People appear, are involved briefly with Logan Mountstuart, and then disappear, sometimes to pop up with a brief mention every fifty pages or so, other times to be gone and forgotten. Conflicts are introduced, such as Mountstuart's concerns about Maurius Leeping or his involvement with "Monday Smith," and then they disappear with the most perfunctory, conflict-free resolution. Too often these "journals" distance the reader rather than allowing one to empathasize with Mountstuart. One never really understands, for example, what made Mountstuart so immediately and deeply attached to the woman who became his second wife, aside from the cliche that as soon as he saw her, he knew she was special.
It is hard to care about the people flowing through these pages and even about Mountstuart. The time span covered by the journals is so great that many years are perfunctory summed up in a page or two in hurry-up tell, not show, fashion. I know that this is an authentic recreation of the way real diaries read, but for me it didn't make compelling fiction. I found the many, many meetings with significant historical figures, the explanatory footnotes, and especially the index at the back of the book, just a little too precious. I understand (I think) what Boyd was attempting. The book does read like a person's journal, but for me the format became tedious and frustrating, always leaving me wanting to know more about individual incidents, but caring little about the grand sweep of Mountstuart's life.
A rare treat.......2007-01-16
A beautiful story. Such good writing. Difficult to put this book down. And easy to get involved with the characters in the story.
Profound, Important, Helpful.......2006-03-12
This, Boyd's greatest work, has to rank up there in the top four literary works which have influenced me, along side Hemingway's "The Sun also Rises", Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye", and Camus' "The Stranger". In a way, these books are all related, because they are all examples of distinctly "modern" literature which pertains and deals with the "emptiness" of the modern world. Essential reading for any man who knows this kind of suffering, or any woman who wants to understand him. Here is a deep and moving work, that doesn't allow a complex plot to hinder its simplistic and real views of the world.
Following this, I also read Boyd's "Stars and Bars", which, while entertaining at times, is not nearly as good.
Boyd deserves our general appreciation for this fine contribution to modern literature. Throw your self-help books away, and read this story of how a courageous, intelligent character confronts modern life.

Good by too much like New Confessions.......2005-10-10
I enjoyed William Boyd's previous novels - The Ice Cream War was particularly fun, and New Confessions was a great read. Any Human Heart is also an excellent book. What will stay with me for a long time is the upbeat ending. It didn't have to be this way, given Logan's ups and downs and seemingly modest achievements. But the fact that it is gives us a happy-ending type feeling which I think is a real treat from Boyd and a real show of appreciation for life.
What dissapoints a bit is how similir the book is to New Confessions. That book has similar "ups and downs and modest achievements" over a similar scan of 20th century events and locations told by a similar main character. Having read New Confessions (though quite some time ago) made Any Human Heart feel predictable. Had a never read the former I may have well thought the latter a near-classic

NEW STAR.......2005-11-12
I loved this book. Ms. Kelly has become one of my favorite authors, she entertains with humor and a great story. I checked this book from the library since it was out of print. Highly recommend it.
Killing Time Has It All!.......2004-10-14
You can always count on Ms. Kelly for a funny, sexy read. KILLING TIME is vintage Kelly with killing one liners, riotous situations and love scenes to die for.
Than for icing on the cake, Ms. Kelly tosses in a whodunit. Had me guessing until the last pages when the real life killer is revealed.
Murder Games in a small town would make such a funny reality show in real life, this reader can only hope that some network exec. reads Killing Time and gets a bug in his/her bonnet.
Highly recommended by,
Pennsylvania Pat!
Killing Time is another awesome Must read from Leslie Kelly.......2004-08-09
I believe Leslie Kelly is one of the very funniest writers I've ever had to pleasure of reading. Her latest book KILLING TIME reaffirms that declaration. It is a very funny book. No, in fact, it's hysterical. I laughed out loud a lot.
From the very first line in the book, "Drop your pants," I was hooked.
I love Mick Winchester, bad boy extraordinaire, and only Caro Lamb, a long lost college sweetheart from Mick's past could even attempt to tame him. The scenes with Mick and Caro together are steamy, sexy and satisfying. Leslie knows exactly how to accelerate and maintain the angst between her hero and heroine.
The reality television concept set in a small town is very funny, lending itself to all sorts of interesting characters and situations. Also the imagery in KILLING TIME is incredible. I feel like I'm standing in the room with the characters as Leslie weaves the story around me. It is sexy and touching and funny and even has an excellent mystery woven in to boot.
I always try to savor Leslie's books when I get them, but I end up tearing through them ignoring all around me until I'm finished. KILLING TIME is no exception. It is the very definition of engaging. I couldn't put it down until I found out who-done-it.
Leslie Kelly is a Must read author and KILLING TIME is most assuredly a Must read book. Thanks Leslie for yet another awesome read.
Book Description
Burkert, Girard, and Smith hold important and contradictory theories about the nature and origin of ritual sacrifice, and the role violence plays in religion and culture. These papers and conversations derive from a conference that pursued the possibility and utility of a general theory of religion and culture, especially one based on violence. The special value of this volume is the conversations as such -- the real record of working scholars engaged with one another's theories, as they make and meet challenges, and move and maneuver.

Book Description
It was the most dangerous role of her career . . . and possibly the last.
Playing a malicious diva on a popular daytime soap, actress Kelly Trent has garnered more than her fair share of hate mail. She doesn't believe anyone would really confuse her with her character, but when an accident on the set hits too close for the producers' comfort, Kelly is unceremoniously put on hiatus.
At her agent's suggestion, she agrees to appear in a music video, thinking the time away filming in the Florida Keys might be just the thing to put her life in perspective. But with two left feet, Kelly only hopes dance instructor Doug O'Casey can work miracles.
A former Miami cop, Doug still has a lawman's instinct for trouble, and the continued threats made against Kelly tell him that she is in danger. Now, as a deranged fan closes in, Doug realizes that someone close to Kelly wants more than her character killed off the show -- someone wants her stone-cold dead.

A Real Stinker.......2006-08-06
I don't know what's more unbelievable...that this author has gotten her books published, or that I keep reading the garbage that she turns out.
This was one of the worst books I've ever read. The characters were unlikeable and complete idiots. The dialogue was inane ("Mel's hurt!" "Yes. Let's go to him!" "Okay!"). The storyline made absolutely no sense at all.
As usual, Heather Graham fills her books with so many characters that it's impossible to keep track of them all. And about 90% of them do absolutely nothing for the story but fill pages. Does she have a page quota to meet?
The worst part of her books is the horrible writing. Whoever told this woman that she could write should be locked in a room and forced to read her books non-stop for a month. No one speaks...everyone murmurs. On the rare occasion that someone does speak, they always do so "cheerfully." Any writer knows that you use exclamation points sparingly -- however, everything these characters say (or murmur) is an exclamation. It's distracting and annoying.
Finishing this book was painful. Ms. Graham should be grateful for the fact that I had no other books in the house, or I would've thrown this one in the trash after the first few chapters. Too bad there's not a zero star rating...although even that would've been too high for this stinker.
Continuation of several storylines.......2006-07-16
Killing Kelly seems to be #3 of a series starting with #1 Picture Me Dead and #2 Dead on the Dance Floor but it also continues the stories of Long, Lean and Lethal, Conar and Jennifer's story and Dying to Have Her, Liam and Serena's story. I have read many of Graham's books and really enjoyed her Civil War stories as well as some of her contemporaries. Her latest mysteries of Picture Me Dead and Dead on the Dance Floor aren't bad but Killing Kelly had several errors that should not have gotten past her proof readers at all. First of all, at the end of Dead on the Dance Floor, it stated that Quinn went back to work for the FBI but in Killing Kelly, he is still a PI. Then it is obvious in book two that Doug was having an affair with Jane at the end of the book but in KK, suddenly he would never get involved with a coworker, etc. again after what happened to his lover who was murdered in Dead on the Dance Floor and he and Jane were just dance partners all of the time.
Then Serena and Liam have a year old son and Jennifer and Conan have a 3 yr. old daughter and twin babies but by the middle of the book, suddenly Liam is up walking the floor with his twin baby and later mention is again made of his twins. Plus Kelly refers to Liam and Serena having 3 children and several pets too. What a mixed up mess! Seems that not only the proof reader missed the boat but Ms. Graham also got her story all balled up too. This is the kind of error that just about ruins a book for me as I hate it when the author doesn't seem to know her own storyline or characters. I hope Ms. Graham either writes fewer books so that she can really concentrate on her story or have someone who pays attention do her proof reading so these kinds of errors can be corrected before the book is published.
Last of all, the reason for the murders and the men involved seemed pretty far fetched. The most I can say positive on this book is that it winds up several story lines if you are interested in what happened to several characters in other books.
Pretty Good.......2006-05-24
Although not one of the author's best, this book still has a decent plot and a lot of suspense. It's definitely worth reading if you are a fan of the author. The one major problem with the story is that there are too many suspects and when you find out who the real "killer" is, it's disappointing.
Overall pretty good.......2006-03-25
Overall this was a pretty satisfying book from the Heather Graham collection. The suspense was tight and non-stop; the mystery was cleverly woven and multi-layered, leading to a complex whodunit that left me guessing until they unveiled the villian. Even the romance was fairly well done most of the time - except that, once again (my pet peeve with romances) the romantic interests were always getting annoyed with one another over the most idiotic things. "What? You're concerned for my life and want to keep me safe?? You unspeakable CAD!! I hate you now!!" *sigh* Then they would get along. Then . . "What? You neglected to tell me your life story the instant we met?? You unspeakable CAD!! I hate you now!!!" ARGH!! Why do romance novelists feel the need to do that? So, therefore, I must reduce my rating to 4 stars. Otherwise, I enjoyed the rest of the story a great deal.
& 1/2 stars: Not her best but still entertaining as a mystery.......2006-03-09
"Killing Kelly" uses characters from two previous books "Dead on the Dance Floor" and "Dying to Have Her". If you haven't read either of those, I highly recommend them as both mysteries and romances!
Kelly Trent who plays viciously sniping advice columnist and younger sister of Serena McCormick on the soap opera "Valentine Valley" has had death threats and during the filming of a scene is nearly killed when a mound of dirt gives way pitching her towards a cliff. Her manager, Mel, and Joe Penney, the soap producer, decide to write her out of the show for now and put her character in a coma. Kelly is not happy with this and feels the shows sponsor, Matt Avery, may have had undue influence on Joe and since she had dated and rejected Matt, maybe he is out for revenge.
Mel signs Kelly up to do a rock video with an up and coming group. As part of the video Kelly needs to do a tango and since it will be shot in the Florida Keys, Mel hires Doug O'Casey (former cop and brother of Quinn from "Dead on the Dance Floor") to teach her and be a bodyguard.
As the story progresses there are more near-misses on Kelly's life and sparks of all kinds between Kelly and Doug. There are also several suspects so the final climax is definitely a surprise both who and why. I felt the mystery was the best part and the romance a little jerky and not as consistent as Ms. Graham's usual romances.
This is still a fun read if just to meet Kelly's dog Sam!
Book Description
After being jolted from a sound sleep by police early in her vacation, Meg Daniels discovers that her former boss at Markshell Publications, D.K. Bascombe, has turned up dead near her rented beach house in Ocean City, New Jersey. A series of suspicious circumstances turns Meg into a prime suspect in his murder, and the evidence against her seems to be mounting every minute. Along the way the action shifts from Ocean City to Atlantic City to the Pine Barrens, with Meg frantically hunting for answers while she herself becomes a target of the killer.
This novel from Plexus Publishing, Inc. is an exciting and suspenseful thriller based in southern New Jersey. The familiarity of the author to the shore areas of South Jersey brings a fun, real life dimension for the local reader to this suspense filled "whodunit". The easily readable short chapters will keep you turning the pages from the moment the body is discovered through the book's exciting conclusion.
Customer Reviews:
Meg Daniels is an Engaging Character.......2003-10-16
Jane Kelly's unique style made Killing Time in Ocean City an enjoyable read. Meg Daniels, a very amateur sleuth with an unusual sense of humor, had my sympathy from page one as her vacation, begun in a blenderful of punch, is interruped by the police and accusations of murder. And while I'm not entirely sure I like Andy Beck, the author's physical description of him certainly held my interest!
Killing Time is filled with Meg's often laugh-out-loud internal dialog, such as when she is looking at a frog clinging to her pants, and thinks "...but stared at me with eyes that would have been far more attractive on a much larger animal."
I look forward to the next two Jane Kelly books I have on my shelf and hope there are more to follow.
Poorly written even for a beach book.......2003-09-15
I am only on page 30 and I am finding this impossible to read. Chapter 1 she is identifying the body and then in Chapter 2 the police come to get her to identify the body??? Every paragraph has at least 3 questions, but no story telling. There is possibly some editing errors with grammar and missing words, but the story is so poorly written, I'm just not sure it wasn't intentional. I live in Ocean City and already have logistic problems. I assume she is in the Gardens (only place where she could be at the beach and have tall grass), but travels through downtown 4 miles to 34th street to make a phone call. I could care less about any of characters I have met so far. I wish someone would kill Meg Daniels so the book would end.
Excellent beach chair by the ocean book.......2000-03-26
Visiting Ocean City since I was very small, I found this book very relaxing and entertaing. It took me back to the place my heart will always be, in Ocean City.
A great and fun read.......1999-02-06
I enjoyed the book immensely. Ms. Kelly's character development and wry sense of humor are both excellent. She obviously knows Ocean City well because her settings are accurate. I hope she has another book out in the near future; I will definitely buy it.
A great combination of mystery and humor.......1998-10-09
A dead boss, a handsome stranger, and a wacky assortment of co-workers and local characters keep Meg Daniels' vacation at the Jersey shore anything but dull. Meg is both funny and likeable, and her quest to find the murderer(along with intriguing P.I. Andy Beck), salvage her vacation, and stay alive combine for a really absorbing and entertaining page-turner.

Book Description
Thirty-three years ago, Kelly Connor was a carefree seventeen-year-old with her life ahead of her. One sunny morning in Perth, Australia, she borrowed her father's car to go to work, having recently passed her driving test. Her very ordinary trip, however, was soon marred by horror. Driving on a clear road, Kelly knocked down and killed an elderly pedestrian. Although she avoided convictions of manslaughter and reckless driving, the incident was to have a profound impact on her life. Kelly quickly discovered that her family and friends avoided all talk about what had happened, while she, in contrast, began to be haunted by the event. So began a cycle of deep inner experiences, visions, and outer life changes.
To Cause a Death: The Aftermath of an Accidental Killing, was written from the perspective of the one who caused the accident. It traces Kelly's life from the depths of despair, sojourns into mental hospitals, and a failed suicide attempt, and eventually to a path of personal and spiritual development. It shows how the passage of her the author's allowed her to reach some comprehension of the tragic accident of her youth. following a tragic accident of her youth.
Whereas the relatives and friends of victims have written much on the subject, little exists on how such incidents affect the perpetrators. This book is essential reading for those concerned with the challenge of inner growth and the challenges of traumatic events.

Book Description
At the remarkable age of 65, Nimrod O'Kellyloner and former blacksmithmade the arduous trek over the Oregon Trail in 1845 to the lush Willamette valley and became one of the first to stake a claim. Although he made few improvements to the land, O'Kelly alleged his wife was living in Missouri, entitling him under the Donation Land Act to one square mile of fertile ground320 acres for her and 320 acres for himself. Over the next seven years settlers continued to arrive, and neighbors grew ever more skeptical. Did Mrs. Sarah Bell O'Kelly really exist? Slowly the newcomers began to encroach on all sides of his 640 acres. Eventually tempers flared, leaving young Jeremiah Mahoney dead, a gaping shotgun wound in his chest.
The killer, Nimrod O'Kelly, chose to turn himself over to the justice of the peace, claiming self-defense. The events that followed provide an intimate look at law on the frontiera place without jails, courtrooms, or coronerswhere judges arrived on horseback, where many trials were held under shady trees, and where convicted murderers often met their end on the gallows. What would be the outcome of Oregon's first extensively reported homicide case? If the accused recluse was indeed married, would his family arrive at last, only to see their patriarch hang? With depth and insight, the author probes and analyzes the evidence, the law, the politics, and finally, the astonishing conclusion to one of Oregon's legendary sagas.

Fantastic author.......2006-01-24
I had the pleasure of learning from Ron Lansing for three years at law school. He is an amazing mind, and one of the finest story tellers I have ever encountered. Since most of us can't travel to Oregon to hear him lecture on the law, do yourself a favor and get this book.

!00 Million Dollars, Anatomy of a Market Killing.......2004-02-24
This book was written entirely by Kelly Angle. Wm. Grandmill had nothing to do wth this book, and this book does not use Grandmill's principles. If you want material by Grandmill go to some of his other books.
What Kelly Angle wrote is reasonable decent. It is primarily about his father's trading in Gold Futures.
A FUNDAMENTAL APPROACH TO GRAIN TRADING.......2000-07-20
This book deals more with 'investing' rather than 'traading' as such it uses a more longer-term approach to making money in the grain futures and options markets. If you want a long term plan with say 2-3 trades for theyear, then this book might be helpful to you. It is not suitable to the active commodities 'trader' who maybe involved in swing trading etc.
