It's clear that when Robbins sits down to write, he has one thing on his mind: having himself some fun. I read
Another Roadside Attraction, years ago, then immediately went back to the beginning of the book and read it again. Robbins holds nothing back in this, his first novel. It's a perfect introduction to the Robbins oeuvre of oddness.
Book Description
What if the Second Coming didn't quite come off as advertised? What if "the Corpse" on display in that funky roadside zoo is really who they say it is--what does that portent for the future of western civilization? And what if a young clairvoyant named Amanda reestablishes the flea circus as popular entertainment and fertility worship as the principal religious form of our high-tech age? Another Roadside Attraction answers those questions and a lot more. It tells us, for example, what the sixties were truly all about, not by reporting on the psychedelic decade but by recreating it, from the inside out. In the process, this stunningly original seriocomic thriller eating a literary hotdog and eroding the borders of the mind.

God Bless You, Mr. Robbins.......2007-06-13
If you can picture the scene of sitting in a high chair (I'm not saying you have to remember this, mind you) and you can go so far as to imagine an adult is scooping orange mush from a small jar, only to stuff it in your face despite your bitter resentment, then you may empathize with me when I say I've read altogether too many books without substance. My point about this novel is that it is intellectually satisfying, not necessarily that the substance allows one to derive life lessons. This book was written in some sense for more liberal thinkers who enjoy literary allusions, social and cultural allusions, political history, among references to a host of information you never thought you'd pick up (a far-reaching reference to the religion of Bokonon...perhaps a shout-out to Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut).
You know, it's hard for me to describe Tom's writing style at all. Many people find it inaccessible. In fact, long ago as an undergraduate I wandered into an independent bookstore in Spokane, Washington looking for something that was, "Like 100 Years of Solitude, something magical and unreal, but significant..." The bookseller smiled and handed me Skinny Legs and All, along with the information that the story included a tin can, a painted stick, and a conch shell for a start. I was utterly defeated by the first 40 pages because I didn't know what I was in for. Vague references can be overlooked and discarded because Robbins makes so many that you're probably not going to 'understand' everything. But those you do understand are incredible.
The writing is wonderful because it combines a decent story and amazing knowledge of the world. I guess this is one of those books that, overall, really isn't 'too hard' to read but, that being said, one should remember that perseverance through seemingly unrelated information will be necessary. But don't despair! Robbins will not let you down, tying everything up nicely by the time you finish.
Huh.......2007-05-04
This book is retarded. I'm obviously a mouth-breathing moron since I can't appreciate it.
Best Premise For A Book, EVER!!!.......2006-07-20
I don't want to give anything away, but if you like poking fun at institutionalized religions, then this is the book for you! My 3rd favorite Tom Robbins book, after Jitterbug Perfume and Skinny Legs and All.
Here's to the good old days.......2006-06-06
I first read this book 30 years ago, the week after I graduated from high school. I remember liking it immensely. I've just now read it a second time, with less enthusiasm. I guess 30 years on I'm less interested in promiscuous hippie chick philosophy, and more bothered that it took over half the book for the corpse to show up. Oh well, I'll give it five stars anyway. Call me sentimental.
In awe I reflect........2006-05-07
merely reading reviews written by other's who have read this book gives me chills if that is any indicator of quality

Beautiful Pictures for the American Time Traveler.......2004-09-29
As a reader I could tell that the author loves the subject. He includes pictures most of the great tourist attractions and many of the not so great ones. This is a fun book to read. Not a heavy piece of reading - but very informative - from several angles - historical, business, and travel. I have read other books by the author and am impressed with all of them. The layout and art direction of the book serves the subject well. I can see this book going into more editions. The size of the book is swell - big enuf for big pictures - small enuf to handle in "tight spots."
a fun read.......2001-01-03
John Margolies is a man with a passion for popular culture. Not only has he written this book but he's also written books on the American travel brochure, the roadmap, gas stations, motels, roadsigns and miniature golf. His books are a worthy addition to any library. Not only is he a photographer but he is also an excellent writer, with warmth and affection for his subject.
True to its name.......2000-08-18
Anyone who enjoys the road and its culture--past and present--will enjoy reading Fun Along the Road. It evokes great memories of those road trips of yesteryear. I own a lot of books on roadside Americana and have a few others by John Margolies. He is an excellent author and photographer. I highly recommend this book.
Great pictures and contemporary history.......1999-08-03
Margolies is a photographer, but he provides not just books of photographs but well-written contemporary history to go with them.
This book is about roadside attractions, some long gone, some still hanging on, and some thriving. It inspired me to spend two weeks driving all over Florida trying to catch some of these places before they vanish forever.
Miniature golf, a favorite subject of the author, gets special coverage.
This book and his previous Home Away From Home are inspirational if you travel and still fascinating if you don't.

Despite a few flaws..........2005-01-14
...such as the too easy ending for the missing sister, not enough urgency regarding said sister, and a mildly written and easy to figure out but creepy murder mystery...Metzger creates a delightful hero in Stony, a strong, independent heroine, and some truly wonderful and unique secondary characters. Moreover, her wit just sparkles, causing me to laugh out loud more often than I could possibly keep up with.
While I have found Metzger's short stories to be hit or miss, this book made me a believer, and I'll try another of her full-length works soon. This one was delightful!
A Fun Read.......2005-01-03
This is a very witty and thoroughly enjoyable novel, with some highly interesting characters, even if the premise of escort-for-hire is a little offbeat for Regency England. The plot is clever and the author neatly resolves all of the issues, though the missing sister matter ended a little abruptly.
Definitely recommended.
What could have been..........2004-12-15
"A Perfect Gentleman" could have been a keeper for me, as are most of Ms. Metzger's books. However, while the love story between the very attractive and nice Stony and rich Elliane was well written and most of the sub-characters were fun,the two subplots, the missing sister and the serial murderer, actually took away from the story. Ms. Metzger wrote a longer regency than she usually does and this might be part of the reason that the story was not as engaging as it might have been since she might have been just trying to fill up the pages.
Also, how could Elliane go from being a scarecrow to a beauty? Stony liked women, he would have picked up on her finer qualities before he really did.
I am also finding the tried and true regency plot of the spinster rich gal who refuses to marry sort of silly. Sure, there were and are are women who do not feel the urge to marry but for Elliane, she actually met someone she really fell for. If she was so smart, would she not perhaps realize that marriage might not be a bad thing? Stony, too, was sort of silly with his anti-marriage issue but in a way, his voice against marriage was based on the fact he had an empty title and pockets to let.
All in all, love story was good but too maybe weak subplots.
Another hit from Barbara Metzger.......2004-11-18
Here are some thoughts to share. The author is one of my auto-buys and she rarely lets the discerning reader down for no one, in my view, does the comic regency as well. The cast of characters in A Perfect Gentleman was wonderful: the usual collection of romantics, eccentrics, weird and wonderful servants and the obligatory Metzger animals.
Aubrey, Viscount Wellstone, was a wonderful hero - and I particularly enjoyed the scenes where he was luxuriating in the long, lustrous and very red hair of Ellianne, our heroine. This author's sex scenes are always about fostering sexual tensions and reflect the deep passion bubbling below the surface of the relationship between her protagonists: she does not go in for explicit, mechanical descriptions. I thought the scene of mad, near consumation in the butler's pantry was delicious and very, very funny. You can't help falling in love with Stony - very well drawn character and a perfect complement for Ellianne whom I also liked very much!
However, on this occasion, I have to agree with another reviewer who said that the sub-plots let the story down. Metzger is obviously making the leap to longer format regencies (hooray!!!) but to do it well, she needs to be sure that the subplots are a little tighter. The story of Capt Brisbane and Ellianne's missing sister just didn't make the cut, unfortunately. The subplot with the serial killer was good but very much out of synch with the general tenor of the story.
For me, a fun and entertaining read. I would give this one 4-1/2 stars if I could. I want to give it five but that would just reflect my love of the author and not an honest assessment of what she had produced. Roll on the next book!
Liked the story.......2004-11-16
I did like the story. It was indeed very zany, witty and I almost couldn't stand it. Every other sentence had wit and was very funny. It was almost too much. The words put together to make sentences were very clever and Ms Metzger definitely delivers wonderful punch lines. I was just alittle antsy to get thru the book though. I thought trying to find the sister with no clues atall dragged on a bit. I did like this better than the last one, Wedded Bliss. All in all a good read.

gripping story******author made alot of mistakes on places.......2000-04-23
The story of Micheal Lee Lockhart's life is so sad. He truly had it all...money; family; good looks; charm; athletic body. What a shame this young man had the brain of a psycopath. There isn't a clue inside Lockhart's brain of any sort of emotion or empathy towards other human beings. As the authors says; Lockhart is like the 3000 year old Hebrew legend of the "Golem" or "Clayman" that has no heart, no soul, and empty eyes. Eyes that don't reflect the glow of ones soul. Just an empty
spoiled brat of a man.
No research from the author..........1999-12-10
I can't believe this is the same author that wrote Deadly Thrills. Jaye obviously threw this book together as quickly as possible. The author may want to read her work before publication as there were MANY incorrect dates and names. Do your research and know what you are talking about Jaye. This book was a true waste of time!
Fantastic, professional insight into a flawed mind........1999-10-25
Jaye, It's been two years. When is your next book going to be published? In my opinion, although not as famous due to fewer books published, Jaye's books have been every bit as well-written and engrossing as Ann Rule's. Jaye writes with an insight to be envied and her thorough research shows in every line. Looking forward to adding a third book of yours to my collection.
An interesting look into homocide investigations.......1999-07-21
I had a hard time putting this book down, it is very well written. I must comment on the fact that some of the research done by the author doesn't seem thorough. I am from the small Indiana town focused on in the book. It is obvious that the writer never visited the town. Some of the descriptions of the town are not only wrong, but ridiculous.
A more absorbing story than Ted Bundy's.......1999-04-11
I couldn't put this book down. The details of the police work, the crime scene, the victims and their families, are all told with vivid descriptions by the author. This is the second book of hers I've read, the first was Deadly Thrills, and they're both the best true-crime stories I've ever read.

The Perfect Biography!.......2005-06-27
I've always found General G. W. Custis Lee a fascinating individual. As a Civil War enthusiast and one who feels a deeply spiritual affinity for that era and its inhabitants, General Custis Lee has captivated me like no other. Perhaps because he was a quiet, introspective man, less is known of him than of his more sociable parents and siblings. In these two volumes, Ms. Yates combines biographical information with Lee's personal correspondence to bring into sharper focus a rather enigmatic persona, and she does it so succesfully that even with the inclusion of a plethora of heretofore unknown information, it still made me want to know *more*. The character himself is a marvelous study: an exceptionally intelligent, complex, solitary figure; a scion of Virginia aristocracy who made duty his lifelong endeavor, and yet there is an incredible amount of pathos that shapes his life, such as the confiscation of the Arlington mansion, his sense of selflessness, his inexplicable lack of confidence, and his lonely bachelorhood. The author superbly provides the reader with the background, events, and personality traits that defined the existence of Robert E. Lee's oldest son. As was cheered on the old battlegrounds, a hearty "Huzzah!" to Ms. Yates for this insightful study of Custis Lee, the utterly perfect gentleman.

Nice Read.......2003-02-21
I thought this book was a nice finish, yet it needed more work into it since it's the final sequel to the Sons & Daughters Series.
Atlas'labor was to escort Widow Charlotte Clairmore to 5 events, yet Charlotte is skittish when it comes to social events. Charlotte tries to put space between herself and others due to her daughter's uncle who is trying to get custody of Opal. Regardless of how much space she puts between herself and Atlas, it doesn't work because she already develop a love for Atlas. Atlas tells her about the labor he has to do, and she goes to the functions so that she can get a 2 horse team from him. Opal likes Atlas a lot and convinces her mom to marry Atlas.
The ending ended short. There was no mention of what his gift was in the end. Nor did Atlas tell his grandma that he told Charlotte about the labor even though it's a family secret.
