Book Description

From the acclaimed author of Shackling Water comes the first great race novel of the twenty-first century, an incendiary and ruthlessly funny satire about violence, pop culture, and American identity.

Macon Detornay is a suburban white boy possessed and politicized by black culture, and filled with rage toward white America. After moving to New York City for college, Macon begins robbing white passengers in his taxicab, setting off a manhunt for the black man presumed to be committing the crimes. When his true identity is revealed, Macon finds himself to be a celebrity and makes use of the spotlight to hold forth on the evils and invisibility of whiteness. Soon he launches the Race Traitor Project, a stress-addled collective that attracts guilty liberals, wannabe gangstas, and bandwagon riders from all over the country to participate in a Day of Apology—a day set aside for white people to make amends for four hundred years of oppression. The Day of Apology pushes New York City over the edge into an epic riot, forcing Macon to confront the depth of his own commitment to the struggle.

Peopled with all manner of race pimps and players, Angry Black White Boy is a stunning breakout book from a critically acclaimed young writer and should be required reading for anyone who wants to get under the skin of the complexities of identity in America.

1 out of 5 stars An Idiot's Tale, Signifying Nothing.......2007-04-16

There is a contradiction inherent in this novel. On the one hand, it clearly espouses the anti-intellectualism of hip-hop (witness the hero's belief that he, and other hip-hop bards like him, will eventually surpass Shakespeare's still-intact record for new usages in English). On the other hand, Adam Mansbach wants to be taken seriously as a prose stylist -- witness the inflated, baroque language in service of mundane action(from p. 311: "The backs of the rest-stop buildings wizened, shrunk, and joined the past . . ."). For every attempt at the high style, there are counterweights like this, from p. 72: "Fly women speckled the crowd, and he found a spot along the back wall, posted up and smoldered his eyes at them, hoping in vain to catch some rhythm in return."

This brings us to another contradiction, this one in Mansbach's writing itself. Although he wants to be taken seriously as a stylist, there are many, many misuses of the language in the short space of "Angry Black White Boy." For instance, the line just cited at page 72 assumes that "smolder" is a transitive verb (that is, one capable of taking an object). I have checked the dictionary -- it is not. Mansbach, here, has mistakenly given "smolder" an object -- "his eyes."

Another error is the misuse of the word "transverse" as a verb (I regret I have no page number for this, but I can assure you it's in there). While "transverse," according to my research, may function as a noun or an adjective, it is not properly used as a verb.

A further error -- "he hit the breaks" (p. 277), in reference to a vehicle's brakes. I realize, of course, anyone can make a typo, but this is a piece of literary fiction published by a division of Random House. This is the age of grammar check, spell check, and completely computerized type-setting -- it is now possible to publish books free of that sort of error.

There are some who will object to the fault-finding tone of this review, to the seemingly picayune nature of the objections. But let us be clear; this is a book by an author who believes he's competing in the same league with Shakespeare. Mansbach himself has dictated the rules of the game he wants to play; it is one for all of the marbles. The self-congratulatory tone, the bombast, the tumescent language pushing a muddle-headed notion of social justice (no matter how praiseworthy) all demand this sort of cutting down to size, not to say the red pen.

Sadly, if Mansbach really wishes to follow his desire (that is, the one I assume on his behalf, that of being recognized as a stylist) he is hopelessly without the talent for achieving that end. He has none of the requisite linguistic wherewithal, and more importantly, none of the artistic discipline necessary to keep naked declarations of theme in check.

He may instead wish to pursue a career in politics, where bombast, and brute force, have their places.

5 out of 5 stars Have we won the war on racism?.......2006-08-29

Nah, kinda hard when few are fightin. This book will make you look at the world a little differently as it reveals to you the constant ignorance surrounding us. A perfect blend of insight on the hip hop culture and a page turning novel.

5 out of 5 stars Race relations needed this.......2006-03-21

I'm a teacher working in a predominantly urban environment, and in Macon I see so many of the kids in my school. I've recommended this book to every colleague who will stop long enough to hear me rave about it. Mansbach's words and characters (none of whom are given short shrift) got so deeply into my head that as the conclusion hit me, I was overcome and wept. I was truly disturbed by this book, because it is just beyond the realm of possibility, but dwells far enough within the boundaries of our imaginations that we should be wondering if such a thing could happen.

Some people think the ending ruins the book, but with a book like this your eyes are held straight through, and if you can buy the rest of the story, the ending is a strangely logical conclusion. People will call it explosive, controversial, and whatever else they call books they don't quite understand. The fact is that Mansbach is right on so many levels. Who owns a culture? Who can ingratiate themselves into a race? If someone tries, are they deserving of punishment for trying? The levels of hatred, misunderstanding, and bemused tragic observation are so prevalent here. I'm in awe of this book, and I don't say that lightly. Please read it.

5 out of 5 stars an instant classic.......2006-03-18

This novel is incredible. The range and complexity of Angry Black White Boy emotionally, socially, politically and stylistically is damn near unmatched, and it's funny as hell. I force my friends to buy this book.

2 out of 5 stars Great Start, Disappointment Overall.......2006-01-07

What a disappointment. I truly enjoyed the first two thirds of this book, but the story dropped off so steeply at the end, that the whole book was spoiled in retrospect.

It was a great concept, and Mansbach deserves praise for creating believable and three-dimensional characters. But as soon as the story moves beyond New York City, grotesque stereotypes emerge.

Macon Detourney was a great character. His imagination is wild, and he tends to interpret the goings-on around him through the lens of TV and popular culture. Unfortunately, the same can be said of Mansbach's relationship to the America outside of New York City. He has seen imagery on TV, but doesn't have the same sense for real and imaginary.

The hip hop writing is great.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Start .........................................2007-09-15

Lady Beware was very interesting in the beginning but slow in many parts.
It is not a page-turner, but if you like Jo Beverley probably you will like this one.
But, Beware of this romance if beautiful love scenes are important to you because there is just one love scene and it is very mild.

I just loved this book. I loved all the Rogues but this one and Dare's story (To Rescue a Rogue) was my favorites. You never know what's going to happen next in this book. I laughed out loud at several times and will surely add this one to my "keepers". If you haven't read all of the Rouges, you need to definitely need to start from the beginning!

5 out of 5 stars A sensual delight with more than a dash of intrigue.......2007-08-11

A brilliant book in the Rogues series, raises the bar to another level. This book is packed with drama, romance and sensual delight, the dark and damaged male character and a brave and courageous heroine combined with the evil threat to them both makes a dynamic mix.
This book is so good you have to read it again soon!

Book Description

When the dripping wet ragamuffin showed up on his doorstep late one night, Alexander Cale, Earl of Everton, quickly discovers that the cheeky lad was actually an enchanting––but infuriating––chit! Kit is astonished that the devastingly attractive Earl saw through her disguise in record time. But his charms is something she can ill afford, yet cannot resist. When danger threatens both their lives, only love can can save them.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very special heroine.......2007-06-13

The basic plot line is: "Kit," our heroine has been taught to act like a boy by her father who is involved in a variety of questionable endeavors on the Continent. In this disguise, she is send into Alex's home to spy on him and to gain information about smuggling. Alex quickly figures out that Kit is a girl, not a boy. Kit and Alex fall in love. There relationship is challenged when Alex discovers exactly why she is dressing like a boy, but ultimately (after several struggles) they end up together.

This is a solid 3.5-4 star romance. I thought Enoch does a wonderful job with this heroine. I like her style, her conversations and everything about her. She is fun and likable character. This was the real strength of the story. Plus, her boyish ways allow for a different form of communication with Alex-- it is much more playful and less formal than is typically seen between men and women in regency romances. The only downside of this story, is the typical romance one-- the plot is a little "out there," but then the idea behind these books is escape!

5 out of 5 stars Very Sexy Reissue!.......2007-05-29

Being that I was in elementary school when Lady Rogue was initially released, had it not been reissued, I would have missed out on this sexy and fun Regency romp. Suzanne Enoch is one of my favorite authors, and Lady Rogue has quickly become one of my favorites from her.

Alexander Cale is, in a word, smoldering. His physical description leaves nothing wanting, but more than that, his personality is what makes him so desirable. I loved his sense of duty, in respect to both Kit and his country.

Christine "Kit" Brantley is charming and impish in her role as a young woman disguised as a man. I can easily picture in my mind each of her actions, and I thank Suzanne Enoch's adept characterization and insightfully descriptive prose for this.

The pair's struggle to overcome their separate, but fatefully linked, goals is the backbone of this work. Each has learned in their fields of business to trust no one and watching them work through this to come together in the end was delightful. And their steamy intimate scenes were nothing to scoff at either!

I highly recommend this very sexy reissue for both old fans of Suzanne Enoch's work as well as those looking for an introduction to one of Avon's most talented romance authors.

5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced, fun, loved the characters!.......2007-02-07

I would give this book 6 stars if I could. I guess it comes down to what a person likes in a romance in their particular mood. Generally I happen to love spunky heroines, well-grounded heroes and a face-paced, suspenseful adventure story with humor. I liked the characters even more as the story went along which is a very good sign. There was eventually some sex but it wasn't overdone or underdone. Just a rolicking good story with good romance and no slow periods anywhere. The perfect escape novel.

4 out of 5 stars Lady Rogue.......2007-01-25

I really liked this book the female lead was great
I liked how she kept her great spirit through out the book so many times the female comes in with a bang that fizzles out before the book ends but not here, the male lead was just as enjoyable as the female so if you like strong women and a book with humor then pickup this book.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful love story.......2006-12-21

Christine "Kit" Brantley is a female spy disguising as a lad. But she is spying for the enemy, aka Napoleon's supporters. Her father deposites her in the safe keeping of the handsome Alex, the Earl of Everton and goes off to arrange a shipment of guns. Alex is no idiot. He realizes Kit is a female almost immediately, and he is fascinated with her. Little by little he comes to know this "brash lad", sensitive, shy woman. Kit is independent and brave and has a sweet innocence about her. What won me over was the beautiful way with which Ms. Enoch describes Alex's growing feelings toward Christine. The ending was a bit stretched, though.
Nevertheless, it was a great read, much better than most regency novels. Recommended.

Smooth as silk, delicate as porcelain, Ivory Diamond was every inch a lady. She was also a ruthless player in her father's pirate empire. Equally comfortable behind as easel creating artistic masterpieces or behind a celestial cannon enforcing her father's edicts, Ivory had but one weakness: She wanted a man to love. Sent to the pirate stonghold to infiltrate Spider Diamond's operation, Drew Jordan found himself in an impossible situation. Handpicked by Spider as a suitable "pet" for his daughter, Drew had to win her love or lose his life. But once he'd initiated Ivory into the delights of lovemaking, he knew he could never turn her over to the authorities. For he had found a vulnerable woman's heart within a formidable lady rogue. This was a wonderful love story. Very realistic as far the furturistic story line went. Hope there's a sequel about their daughter.

He awakens in her a fiery passion, and even his hard slaps to her backside fail to quell her lust. Her virgin body aches for his touch, and she needs his strength and courage to rescue her mother. Will the rogue succumb to youthful charm and help her, or deliver her to the evil lord who ordered the raid on her castle?

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Moving!.......2007-07-17

Set in an age of kings and castles, knights and nobility, peasants and wenches, 'Lady Faulcon's Rogue' is an immensely enjoyable tale of chivalry and adventure, intrigue and betrayal, romance and spanking.

Devlin O'Neill and Georgia Lynd weave a wonderful tale that will transport the reader to 14th century England where beautiful young Lady Bess Faulcon is forced to flee into the night after brigands raid the castle she and her mother now call home. But Lady Bess eludes her would be captors with a cunning and bravery not expected from an 18 year-old girl. Now a fugitive, she falls into the hands of Owen Rhys and his band of men. Is he a rogue who will ransom Lady Bess to the villian who raided her home or is he her savior who will reunite Bess with her mother who was snatched during the raid and is now being held prisoner?

This is the scenario presented by Mr. O'Neill and Ms. Lynd in a most satisfying and enjoyable manner. Adventure and romance will thrill the reader. Colorfully vivid characters will catch your imagination. And the spanking will make your pulse pound. Highly recommended, 'Lady Faulcon's Rogue' will provide the reader with an entertaining and moving experience.

This is the first collaboration between the two authors, who have since written a marvelous second novel, 'A Fine Deceit'. Here's hoping Devlin O'Neill and Georgia Lynd are busy creating a third.

I couldn't wait to read the next page to see what was going to happen to the heroine. Devlin has been a favoriate author of mine for a while and this book done with his co author is just another one in my collection. If you want to have a book that keeps you reading until the end buy this one!!! There is romance, fighting, a grand story set in castles and kingdoms. Keep up the great work Dev!!!

Devlin O'Neill has been one of my favorite authors from the Maid series and I absolutely loved this book that he cowrote with Georgina. With it being her first book it was very good. I couldn't tell what she wrote and what Devlin wrote. They make a good team on bodice rippers and hope they will write more together. They are both good authors and are in sync with each other.

Ladies, ignore the editorial review above because its dry description does absolutely no justice to this riveting and addictive book. This is possibly the best romance novel that I have ever read, and I'm very sorry to see that it's out of print!

Our heroine, Juliana, lives in rural 19th century England with her two Irish servants. She is single and lonely, and has just been dumped by her fiance for her witchy younger sister. Soon, though, she meets the ultimate lover, a tall, dark, muscular outlaw with fiery Gypsy blood who falls for her simple charms. Their union and quest for romantic happiness is an irresistible journey for the reader. There are love scenes, to be sure, but they are not as explicit or long as in some other romance novels, which actually adds to the class and simplicity of this outstanding escape-read by Ms. Scotney St. James.

3 out of 5 stars A charming, fluffy, inoffensive romance.......2002-02-12

There's not much here, really. Just a nice hero and heroine, who suffer no misfortunes and everything's just peachy. That's it. That's the whole plot. You keep thinking something is going to happen: the plot builds, the music swells and...the chapter ends. "What could possibly go wrong?" our hero's sister asks. Aha! Something will surely happen NOW. A guest at the dinner party makes a catty comment to cause trouble while the men are at their port. The gentlemen return and...Alex and Georgie agree that she's a viper. The entire book goes on like this in the inexorable march to the altar. There is no tension, no plot and no character development whatsoever. The characters are no different at the end than they were at the beginning. They would have been wonderful secondary characters in another novel.

There are some minor difficulties with titles: If the dowager Duchess of Wayland is "Your Grace," why isn't the duke? He's always referred to as Lord Wayland. Also, there were many anachronisms in the dialogue. No one spoke of having a "messed up" family in the 1800s!

Other than these quibbles, it's a great bubble bath read, since you wouldn't be terribly disappointed to have it fall in the water and it's not precisely taxing to follow the plot.

5 out of 5 stars from Romantic Times Magazine.......2002-02-05

She is called Lady Rogue by a society which accepts her work as an artist, but will never accept her as a lady of quality.
When Alex, the impoverished Duke of Wayland, realizes he has come to love Georgina Beaumont, he's afraid her fortune will stand in the way of their realtionship.
Georgina cares little for money, but is afraid that the ton will never accept her as a duchess and that Alex will want her to change. Even the bond of their love may not be enough to prevent pride and recklessness from separating them.
Amanda McCabe has finally turned her considerable talents to Georgina's story, and is fabulously successful at finding her the right man. This is a love story created by the sure, deft strokes of a master!

"Lady Rogue" by Amanda McCabe starts out promisingly enough: Alexander Kenton, the Duke of Wayland, returns form the wars to find that he has inherited a wreck of an estate form his wastrel brother, and that money is desperately needed not only to put the estate to rights but so that his invalid mother and young sister can know a measure of comfort and ease. And so Alexander resolves to go to London in order to find a rich wife. And he finds her in the form of Mrs. Georgina Beaumont, a very rich and independent widow, who also happens to be a talented portrait painter, and whom he falls in love with a first sight. And wonder of wonders, she seems to favour him also. And at this point, after the initial meeting, the novel fizzles. Not much happens after this: Alexander and Georgina partake in the usual tonnish rounds of entertainment, flirt a little, talk a little -- in between of which Georgina and her best friend Elizabeth discuss Alexander's good looks and good qualities at great length -- and then she's off to meet his family where she ends up spending a lot more time with his sister (Emily) than with him. And then a conflict arises between the two when Georgina generously loans Emily some money. The two fight, and Georgina leaves for London. Will Alexander try to patch things up with Georgina? Or will Georgina's wealth and Alexander's need of it be too much for him to deal with?

I tried to figure out why I was so disappointed with this novel and came away with the feeling that in spite of the fact that Alexander seemed like the perfect gentleman, Georgina was a rather nice and intelligent heroine, and their initial momentous meeting (Alexander dives into a lake in order to rescue Georgina's dog) the developing romance between the two was somewhat lacking. There was actually more of a spark between Georgina and Alexander's sister than there was between our said hero and heroine. And then there was the whole bit about Alexander not wanting Georgina for her money. The sad fact is that he needs her money in order to straighten out his family affairs. However, having fallen in love with Georgina seems to have made Alexander forget that the entire reason why he went to London in the first place: to find money. He may dislike needing Georgina's money but acting as if she was forcing it down his throat was a bit much, in my opinion.

"Lady Rogue" seemed to have the potential to be a really great read. Unfortunately for me, this potential was never fully realised.
