In the last book in the A-LIST series (American Beauty: An A-List Novel (A-List #7)), the gang had finally graduated while discovering some juicy secrets. Cammie had discovered more information on what really happened to her mother. Sam was finally reunited with Eduardo, and Anna met Caine, who was nothing like her boyfriend, Ben. And Ben's dirty little secret wasn't a secret any longer.
The A-Listers are back again in HEART OF GLASS, and this time with a little twist.
Anna and Cammie have to work together - that's right, together - on a charity fashion show. But they got off easy, since this little community service project was the result of getting caught trespassing on a celebrity's estate. No worries, these two can work together, right?
Anna and Caine are getting a little closer, while Ben doesn't seem to worry so much. While Adam and Cammie are trying to make things work, we're hoping that opposites really do attract. Sam is still trying to adjust to living with Poppy, and maybe trying to get rid of her at the same time, while making sure nothing goes wrong with her and Eduardo. And Dee, well, she's Dee, trying to get back on her feet.
The gang is back and it's going to be one sizzling summer.
Eighth in the series, HEART OF GLASS is still filled with secrets, lies, and plenty of drama. The best thing about this series is that the material is never old and it still keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. The cast is still great and you just love Anna more and more after each book. Lets just say that HEART OF GLASS is more appealing than another episode of a certain teen drama on a new network - at least I'm experiencing something I haven't seen before!

I am crazy over this series ... i think that this book had to be the most mouth dropping one ... i almost feel like zoey can't write these books fast enough ... i feel like i can identify w/ every character on one level or another ... zoey dean delivers everytime you read one of her books
Pretty Good..........2007-05-17
I've been following the A-List novels since they came out a few years ago. There were tons of these book series floating around--the rich, cliquey girls who seemed to be mean and exclusionary--there were the Gossip Girls, the Clique... you get my drift.
Of all the books of that sort, A-List was the one that caught my eye. I followed it religiously for a while, but I got to one particular book in the series and almost gave up on it. The name-dropping and overall snobbery frustrated me to the point that I almost didn't give a flying ice cream cone about Anna and Ben or Dee's increasing psychosis.
Dean has redeemed herself with this last one, though. The characters are proving to be much more dimensional than first thought, and although they still tend to get themselves into outrageous situations, they are handling them with class and the kind of assertiveness I wish I'd had as a teenager. I really enjoyed this last book and I am looking forward to the "next juicy A-List novel."

Book Description
The Great Depression has bound a nation in despair -- and only a privileged few have risen above it: the exorbitantly wealthy ... and the hucksters who feed upon them. Diego, a seventeen-year-old illegal Mexican immigrant, owes his salvation to master grifter Thomas Schell. Together with Schell's gruff and powerful partner, they sail comfortably through hard times, scamming New York's grieving rich with elaborate, ingeniously staged séances -- until an impossible occurrence changes everything.
While "communing with spirits," Schell sees an image of a young girl in a pane of glass, silently entreating the con man for help. Though well aware that his otherworldly "powers" are a sham, Schell inexplicably offers his services to help find the lost child -- drawing Diego along with him into a tangled maze of deadly secrets and terrible experimentation.
At once a hypnotically compelling mystery and a stunningly evocative portrait of Depression-era New York, The Girl in the Glass is a masterly literary adventure from a writer of exemplary vision and skill.

Great fun, great read ..........2007-08-22
Fast snappy chapters with neat titles. All in all, a good read. Oddly enough, not only did it win an Edgar for Best Original Paperback, it was also a finalist for the Nebula. It's a strange world.
An excellent story full of great characters set in a wonderfully constructed world (my endorsement)..........2007-08-10
Girl in the Glass drew me in from the first paragraph and kept me engrossed till the end. Few novels of late can boast of doing the same with me. Jeffrey Ford not only creates/recreates a time period and a very distinctive subculture, he tells one heck of a story utilizing this setting.
Every character in this book comes to life. Antony in particular is a character that will live for a long time in my memory. I sometimes find myself in situations where I would not mind having an Antony handy.
The butterfly motif here would shame even Nabakov.
All in all, I find myself not wanting to say too much to ruin this book for you. I will say this--you should read Girl in the Glass. You will not be disappointed.
I give this book a full recommendation.

Unexpectedly fun.......2007-07-09
I picked this book up because the author did a blurb on the back cover of Vellum: The Book of All Hours, and I liked that book so much I decided Ford was worth a try.
It is nothing like Vellum, let me start by saying that. It is a coherent, logical, thought-provoking and often-surprising read, a mystery of sorts with anti-heroes worth loving. It made me long to be a part of the group.
I hope more stories of these rascals are being written as we speak.
All the right chords.......2006-09-16
It is rare to find an author that strikes every chord right, but Jeffrey Ford did that for me in this book. It's engaging, intelligent, well-written, and funny as hxll.
This is the first book of Ford's that I have read; but, happily, will not be the last. Do yourself a favor. Just read the first page. You will be captured.
Book Description
Hailed for her “remarkably accomplished and poignant work” (Washington Post), acclaimed author Elizabeth McGregor returns with a haunting love story about two lost souls brought together by chance—and bonded forever by a mystery that transcends madness, tragedy, and time itself....
Catherine Sergeant is adept at going through the motions. After losing her parents at an early age, she buried her grief in the study of antiquities. Now, deserted by her husband without warning or explanation, she reports to work at Pearson’s auction house, exchanging pleasantries with colleagues, never revealing her pain. Cocooned in loneliness, she couldn’t be more surprised to find herself opening up to a total stranger—a new client, no less.
In widowed architect John Brigham, Catherine finds a kindred spirit. The two share a fascination with Richard Dadd, an early Victorian painter who lived most of his life incarcerated in an insane asylum. There he produced his most stunning works—works that have deeply moved Catherine and now draw her inexorably
to John. Soon the two are falling in love.
The reawakening of passion in a woman like Catherine is more than John ever hoped for. But when she discovers his possession of an unknown Dadd, it is just the first in a series of revelations that leave her wondering if she knows this man who has shown her life’s true beauty. For John, it may be a last chance to free himself from the priceless secrets he has been harboring too long. Secrets about a soul laid bare on canvas, and a legacy that could shatter all he holds dear in the space of a heartbeat…
A compelling blend of human drama, art, and history, this intriguing tale casts a spell that lingers far beyond the final page—and celebrates the strength we all must find within our hearts.

Has promise, but misses the mark.......2007-06-17
I read this for our bookclub. I am a fan of Richard Dadd and was looking forward to this book. I was disappointed, however. The characters are not particularly sympathetic and the two parts of the book (the ongoing romance between John and Catherine; Helen's sinking pathetically into serious mental illness; Catherine and Robert's peculiar breakup--intercut with the peeping into Richard Dadd's psyche) just didn't work really well as an integrated whole. The pace was a bit slow, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, though the ultimate payoff did not make it worthwhile. Not a terrible book by any means, but not very memorable. If you are interested in Dadd, by all means take a look.
Not my kind of book.......2007-06-10
This may possibly be a good book - I found it so boring I gave up after reading only a third of it. Maybe I missed the good part. Although I am a compulsive reader (who ELSE reads the side of cereal boxes?), I couldn't force myself to finish it.
very pleased.......2007-03-09
Received in a very timely manner, book was new and I certainly enjoyed reading it. I would buy from this vendor again.
Well worth reading..........2006-09-14
I had grabbed this book while passing thru a bookstore out of sheer desperation for something to read, and it has turned out to be a wonderful literary surprise. The author brings her characters to life, even the artist, Dadd, takes on a whole new meaning. I'm now anxious to learn more about him. But even more, I am looking forward to reading more of Elizabeth McGregor's books. She has an extraordinary talent in keeping readers interested, even as the story of both Dadd and the primary characters changes from one minute to the next.
I strongly recommend this for a really good read.
life imitates art imitates life.......2006-02-25
Oh, wow, I was impressed with this book. Two stories which turn out to be related, alternate. We open in a London insane asylum, 1844. In the middle of a scene remeniscent of the beginning of Amadeus, the artist Richard Dadd is painting the details of an insect's wing. Probably most Americans and people without an art history background have not heard of Dadd, but he was real and his work was fascinating. It's worth taking a look at some of his pictures on the web. He was put away for life after killing his father in the middle of a delusion (he was schizophrenic). Much of his best work was done while confined in mental hospitals. In present day London, art appraiser Catherine has been left by her husband Robert. In the course of her work, she meets John, who has a house full of art and collectibles and antiques. They begin a relationship that eventually leads back to Richard Dadd. The stories are well told, the descriptions are exquisite, and the author treats characters having major mental illnesses with sensitivity, although she also makes them realistic. One remarkable scene has Dadd being transferred from a hospital where he's been for 20 years to another institution outside London. It's his first time out and his first trip on a train. It's a Rip van Winkle kind of sensation; yet Dadd carefully notes every detail for future works because he knows he wont get the chance to see it again. This book is just so interesting and really a pleasure to read. I felt I learned quite a bit, and that's something for a novel. Highly recommended.

Beautiful Anne of Fenwyck has loved her foster brother, Robin de Piaget, since they were children. Now Robin has become a fierce knight and Anne's father is bent on marrying her off. Robin hasn't been home to his family's seaside keep, Artane, for five long years, but when he learns that Anne's father is husband-hunting, he returns immediately. Although Robin, too, has loved only Anne since they were children, he is a warrior unskilled in wooing and his awkward attempts to lure the lady he loves are too often misadventures. Fortunately for the course of true love (although often painful for Robin), our hero has a charming brother and a strong-willed grandmother who are more than willing to lend a matchmaking hand.
As if Robin didn't have enough on his battle-scarred hands with trying to win his lady, there is evil mischief afoot in the castle. Jealousy and greed have festered long and strong in the hearts of three of Artane's residents and the return of Anne and Robin sets in motion a chain of events that threatens their lives. Now Robin must find a way to keep Anne and his siblings alive while he discovers the identity of the assassins that stalk them.
In this tale of medieval wooing and mystery, Kurland has created an endearingly gruff and impossible hero balanced by a warm and vulnerable heroine. There is an often hilarious humor to the scenes of sibling rivalry and the secondary cast of characters is so interesting that one can easily imagine a series of books featuring the members of the de Piaget clan. In If I Had You Kurland has written another sure-fire hit that will delight her readers. --Lois Faye Dyer

disappointing ending..........2007-07-18
I found this book very entertaining until the last quarter of the book. It became dull and uninteresting. I went from not being able to put it down, to barely making it to the end.
refreshing author.......2007-01-21
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was spellbinding.
I couldn't put it down. I have since read all of Lynn Kurlands other books and I'm impatiently waiting for her next one to come out.
An Awesome Addition to the dePiaget series.......2006-09-11
No one can compare to Lynn Kurland in her devotion to character development. Unlike books where you wonder why the characters do what they do, you are given enough details to know exactly what makes her characters tick, even when they are frustrating you understand why they do what they do. Some people are disappointed that Kurland does not give much in sexual content, she leaves most of it to the imagination, but I get so engrossed in the characters and the story that I really don't miss it. Besides, she does deliver passion, just not sex.
This is the story of Anne of Fenwyck and Robin de Piaget. Anne is the daughter of Geoffrey of Fenwyck from Another Chance to Dream and she was sent to foster at Artane as a young girl. As long as she can remember she has loved Robin de Piaget, son of Gwen and Rhys de Piaget. At a young age Anne had a riding accident that left her lame in one leg and she has been the brunt of teasing from bullies like Baldwin and other kids fostering at Artane. Rhys and Gwen lavish love on Anne so she is really not traumatized by their teasing. Robin witnesses some teasing by Baldwin and challenges him to a fight. Baldwin trashes Robin and Robin is humiliated. He feels he will never be worthy of Anne and the first chance he gets he flees to join the Crusades. Anne never knows about Robin's humiliation at the hand of Baldwin, she grows up believing Robin left because he couldn't stand to be around someone lame. She doesn't think she is beautiful and doesn't feel worthy of Robin.
Years later, Anne returns to Artane to attend the funeral of Montgomery, one of the knights of Artane. She is secretly hoping her father will leave her there instead of continuing to pursue a search for a husband for her. Robin returns as well for the funeral and panics at the thought of Anne marrying another. However, he is gruff with her and doesn't offer for her himself. He is still harboring the thought that she will reject him because he couldn't protect her as a child. When his brother Nicholas starts wooing Anne, he becomes enraged and decides he will attempt to woo her as well. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a clue, and Anne thinks he is having sport with her. After all, how could he love her back, she is lame and unattractive. When a young squire is killed, Anne and Robin's parents leave to return his body to his parents. During their absence, several attempts are made on Anne's life, and Robin locks himself in a bedchamber with her to protect her. She is compromised and she and Robin are forced to marry. Each still believes they are not good enough for the other. When Robin's grandmother visits and attempts to teach him wooing techniques, everything finally comes to a head.
I absolutely loved this book. It is humorous without losing the serious nature of each of the lead characters. They are each so complex and unique, you just can picture them in your mind. I believe this is one of Kurland's best.
Fabulous Book.......2006-07-31
I have to say that this book is my second favorite, after Lynn's "Another Chance to Dream." It is extremely well written, in my opinion. But it's funny to see how some reviewers here obviously miss a LOT when they read. We DO hear how Anne's accident happens, and we DO know why Edith wants Artane. (Who wouldn't? Lynn patterned it after Bamburgh castle.) And as for those who think that Robin's insecurity isn't realistic... well... I have news for you. It's extremely realistic, as any woman who has proven herself trustworthy to a man (enough for him to open up to her) will know.
The truth is that this book is very well written, but like most of Lynn's, you have to really READ it to catch all the nuances and threads of emotion that run through every page. You can't read it just for the events that happen and the conversations... you have to read it closely enough to catch the emotions that prompted those actions and conversations. THAT is where Lynn's skill lies... the characters come alive in a way that they can't if she had just written "Robin was frustrated" or "He thought she was beautiful."
And by the way... Lynn's books usually get even better on the second or third read because you're not in such a hurry to find out how things are fixed, and you catch things that you missed the first or second time around.
Ms. Kurland has a new fan!!.......2003-09-29
Wonderful! I too started with one the subsequent books and am now backtracking. I love Ms. Kurland's writing. I am sorry I did not discover her sooner. So much lost time! I am looking forword to all of the books I have yet to read and all of the books she has yet to write!

Just like Punchinello, we all want to fit in—to be accepted by the crowd. But at times that may mean either looking and acting like others or risking being rejected.
God’s truth is simple and unchanging, reminding us that it’s not what we have that counts, but whose we are. This is a truth the lovable Wemmick, Punchinello, hears again at the knee of Eli, his creator.
Punchinello’s hard-learned lessons show us how important it is to be who we were created to be, and why that matters. Let the two wonderful tales

Book Description
From bestselling author Deborah Bedford comes a moving tale of an estranged mother and daughter, and the child who forces their old conflicts back into the light. Nora Crabtree has long-since given up on her wayward daughter. When Tess turns up pregnant and begs for help, the last thing Nora wants is to get involved again. When Tess leaves, the Crabtrees have no choice but to bring this motherless baby into their home. Nora believes that God is giving her the chance she prayed for, to right mistakes from years before. She pours all the love that Tess had rejected into this new child. But when Tansy Crabtree vanishes on her walk from the bus stop, Nora and Tess must struggle with a relationship they thought had died years ago-and with the question of what is best for the little girl whom they both want to love. And Nora discovers that God may answer more prayers than she ever bargained for.
Customer Reviews:
A good book.......2005-02-19
This book is about Tess, the wayward daughter who shows up at her parents pregnant. Nora does not seem to be at all
accepting towards her daughter. Tess takes off after having her baby, leaving her (Tansy) for her parents to raise. It
turns out that Nora doesn't disapprove of her daughter. She is suffering from her own trauma of having an abortion many
years ago.
I thought this was a very good book overall. I loved the reconciliation theme towards the end with Tess, and admire Tess for her decision to chose life for her unborn baby. I liked the character of Ben and how he seemed to be there for Tess.
At times, some of the dialog seemed a little stilted. The only other thing that I didn't like was that nobody seemed to like
Tess. Nora didn't seem to like Tess, Creede was annoyed with Tess, Creede's father was disapproving of Tess, and the church
ladies were disapproving of Tess. Yeah, Ben stood up for her, but it seemed that everyone was too hard on her. It would
have been nice to see someone reaching out to Tess, to help her go in the right direction but in a loving manner.
The book also mentioned something about Nora discovering the truth about herself and her abortion. I didn't really seem to
grasp what that truth was. Was it guilt? Was she disapproving of Tess because of the guilt over her own abortion? This
part seemed rushed towards the end.
Bedford interwove her own abortion experience into the book, so she knows what a woman who has had an abortion goes through.
Overall, I enjoyed the book.
One of Bedford's best yet..........2004-08-27
...and that's saying a lot! What a compelling, beautifully written story! If Deborah Bedford's storyline hadn't grabbed me by the throat, her writing style would have. Some of the breathtaking images she paints with words, simply beg to be put on film. And the intricate relationships between her characters are so true-to-life and touching, you won't be able to put this book down. It made me want to buy everything she's ever written.
