Book Description
The problem with new-style churches isn't just that they're ugly - they actually distort the Faith and lead Catholics away from Catholicism.
So argues Michael S. Rose in these eye-opening pages, which banish forever the notion that lovers of traditional-style churches are motivated simply by taste or nostalgia. In terms that non-architects can understand (and modern architects can't dismiss!), Rose shows that far more is at stake: modern churches actually violate the three natural laws of church architecture and lead Catholics to worship, quite simply, a false god.
Not content to limit himself to theory, Rose in Ugly as Sin takes you on a revealing tour through a traditional church and a modern church. He shows conclusively how the traditional church communicates the Faith, while the modern one simply doesn't. In the process, he'll give you a renewed understanding, love, and gratitude for the gift of faith that is your traditional church - plus a keener sense of just what's wrong with modern churches that look like anything but churches. Rose provides you with solid arguments (as easy to explain as they are hard to refute!) and practical tools that you can use to reverse the dangerous trend toward desacralized churches - and to make our churches once again into magnificent Houses of God!

If ugly saves your soul, I may end up believing in universal ssalvation after all.......2007-01-30
Rose is simply excellent. Most modern churches look like the exact same buildings I go to for business conferences. Will my children dispatch their encounter with God and His sacraments with reverence when it looks just like where they will likely work during the week? Why get up and go to Mass at all?
Even a pagan would appreciate Rose's criticisms, for you could probably substitute the words "church" for "temple" and still have a comprehensible document. But Rose's chief criticism is what the goals of a Christian Church are and how architecture should assist and inspire towards those goals.
So what is going on today? Well, Church architecture is "Cr*p-tastic" as David Letterman would say. Fully polluted with Bauhaus, meaninglessness, abstraction, and the ever-present demonic zeitgeist of "in the spirit of Vatican II," we've got churches where we might as well be served hotdogs and snow cones. As a "Roamin' Catholic" because of business travel, I often look around for the "1/2 price" table from the GAP in most vestibules, given the architecture. Lord knows where they put the Lord, usually tucked away in a forgotten box in a side "chapel" which is (and I have *never* found an example to the contrary) even *more*hideous* than the church it self, if you can imagine such a thing were possible. Rose walks us through why this all happened, and it is sickening work to read.
Buy a copy for your Bishop today. And the next time the Diocese starts to raise money for a parish plant in some newly constructed suburb, be sure that you get the names of all involved and send this book as a gift before the first sketch.
Another Outstanding Expose' By Rose.......2006-03-05
In this book, Rose tackles the continuing de-emphasis of Catholicism within the liberal ranks of the Catholic Church. With photographs, Rose cannot be challenged in his assertion that in the past four decades, liberal bishops and priests have deliberately constructed edifices devoid of inspiration. Take the example of Holy Spirit Church in Montgomery, Alabama, built in 2001...A horrendous example of precisely what Rose exposes. Here is another of those bare-bones stone science labs, astounding in its total absence of the aura of spiriuality, to which all Catholic church architecture should aspire. Small wonder, then, that in the Sanctuary of this albatross, there is no room for something as "bothersome" as the tabernacle holding the Blessed Sacrament, as space MUST be given over to the choir, so they can sit in mock-concelebratory position and sing their Methodist ditties. The heartening news is that this architectural madness is slowly dying of its own worthlessness. Rome, alarmed at these church designs, and with a keen eye toward all manner of abuses in the Church as it exists in America, has issued a growing number of texts regarding elements of church architecture and interior setting. A new generation of more orthodox priests, along with a growing number of parishioners who have tired of this silliness, have become more vocal and there are plans for new churches which return to the architecture designed to inspire, to enhance solemnity and to be treasured as truly Catholic. We didn't get in this overnight, and we won't get out of it overnight. But, with perserverance, we can ensure that future generations will have churches which are truly Catholic.
A Signal Book - Very Important.......2006-02-03
This is an important book for a number of reasons:
1. It can be counted among that group of books that signaled that something has gone terribly wrong with the post-Vatican II renewal. In 2006 we (thankfully) are finally seeing true reform. The seminaries are being reformed, the priesthood is being cleaned up, our Catholic Universities are being called to return to their roots, we have a new catechism and the faithful are finally being taught the faith, and many of the new churches and shrines being built are eschewing the modernist trends of the last 50 years and returning to design that is timeless and a faithful representation of the Faith. Indeed, we are seeing more and more Churches being restored (as opposed to renovated)- a sign that the changes imposed during the 70's and 80's were theologically and aesthetically wrong. This book is important because it was possibly the first to tackle the issue head on and call a spade a spade . . . a sin a sin.
2. From this work, and others like it, a movement has emerged of Church architects to defend and advance the Tradition of architecture. An organization was launched called the Instituted for Sacred Architecture (www.sacredarchitecture.org) and it publishes a journal and highlights best practice and critiques poorly designed new church buildings. Another website grew out of the book: www.dellachiesa.com - which too is about traditional sacred architecture.
3. The word is getting out. The laity is no longer sitting back and doing what they are told by psudo-experts who toute themselves as authoritative interpreters of Vatican II and then dismantle the tabernacle, move the altar and form the pews in a circle around the "family meal". Thankfully, the lay person can now say STOP! And have the supporting evidence to defend what is beautiful and sacred.
We are beginning to see the emergence of what Dr. Paul Vitz, PhD called a "Transmodernist" movement which is marked by a transcending of the modernist doctrines (which the Church has declared heresy) and recovering an authentic experience (and theology) of the Sacred.
Mr. Rose's book is important because it has signaled the fall of the old regime and the restoration of the sacred in Architecture. This is an excellet book for learning why this happened and why it was wrong. It is a hopeful book because it points out the direction of where things are headed for the Church which is marked by the John Paul II Generation!
Thank you Mr. Rose.
PS: If you look at the negative Amazon reviews of this book, they claim Mr. Rose is biased. But if you look at their other reviews, you can quickly surmise who carries the bias. The reality is that a minority of people have invested their identity and professional ethos on the kinds of buildings Mr. Rose legitimately tears apart and exposes to the light of common sense. That is why you will read ugly posts that tear apart Mr. Rose and his book. If you can't win based on ideas, you have to attack the bearer of the ideas himself.
Uglier than Sin.......2005-12-03
This book is, quite frankly, trash. Someone needs to read the Bible. Are the examples carefully chosen to show ugly buildings? Yes, of course. But the theology of architecture is both biased, and sinful. Zero stars?
Excellent.......2005-09-19
This is one of the best "reality" books I have read in long time. It was time that abuses in the American Catholic Church be published and explained, besides the media sensationalism. Now if the Vatican can clean house, that would probably make a lot of American Catholics return to the Church.

For those of you who can't get enough Nora Roberts, Roberts has dusted off this romance thriller from the early '80s, slapped a new cover on it, and republished it. After so many years, Sacred Sins may feel a bit musty, but those readers just looking for a good time won't mind some outdated attitudes or references when the timeless suspense and romance keep them flipping the pages.
With the talents that later led her to create her J.D. Robb line of In Death romance thrillers, Roberts uses an "opposites attract" theory of appeal between her lovers and firmly places her heroine in the killer's sights. Dr. Tess Court is a successful psychiatrist who is guilted by her senator grandfather into advising on a serial murder case. Detective Ben Paris hasn't much respect for shrinks after his brother's unsuccessful treatment for post-war depression. However, forces align to put these two together and things turn hot and heavy. As they work to uncover the murderer's motives, Tess and Ben realize that she is both the killer's next likely victim and his best hope for a savior.
Tess has all the spunk and determination of a typical Roberts heroine with a great wardrobe and elegant tastes to boot. Though the killer's motivations remain somewhat simple, he is convincingly creepy, and this thriller will satisfy loyal fans and new readers alike. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien
Book Description
Combining explosive suspense with sensual passion, Nora Roberts turns up the heat in this classic tale — the sizzling story of a man and woman on the trail of a demented killer, a search that will plunge them headlong into danger....
In the lazy days of summer, a merciless heat wave is the biggest story in Washington, D.C. But the weather is knocked off the front pages when a young woman is found strangled to death. A note left behind reads Her sins are forgiven her.
Two more victims soon follow, and suddenly every headline is devoted to the killer the press has dubbed “the Priest.” When the police ask top-notch psychiatrist Dr. Tess Court to help with their investigation, she comes up with a disturbing portrait of a twisted soul.
Detective Ben Paris doesn’t give a damn about the killer’s psyche. What he can’t easily dismiss is Tess. Tall, dark, and good-looking, Ben has a legendary reputation with women, but the coolly elegant Tess doesn’t react to him like other women he’s known — and he finds the challenge enticing.
Now, as the two are thrown together in a perilous quest to stop a serial killer, the flame of white-hot passion flares. But someone also has his eyes on the beautiful blond doctor ... and Ben can only pray that if the madman strikes, he'll be able to stop him before it’s too late....

Page Turner.......2007-05-07
Nora Roberts is the type of auther to keep you in suspense and unlike other romance writers, she always gives the reader little twists and turns that you don't expect. This book is a page turner!
Oh Yeah!.......2007-02-03
This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for years and I have finally gotten around to reading it. It is, by far, one of the best Nora Roberts books I've ever read. It has everything-suspense, murder and romance and they don't get much better than this. The detective Ben Paris couldn't have been molded any more perfectly and Tess was pretty likeable even given her determination, as a pyschiatrist, to treat the man who ultimately tries to kill her. I loved the relationship between Ed and Ben and the dialogue, again, couldn't have been written any better. This is one of those books that you don't want to start reading unless you have a lot of free time because it's hard to put down. The only complaint I have is that it didn't end with much of a bang. A surprise, but not really a bang. It would have been more exciting, I think, to see Ben lose a little control.
Suspense and Romance.......2006-09-12
Being an avid Nora fan, and having read many of her books, I find this story to be a good combination of mystery with subtle, but well-written romance. This is the first of the Ben Paris/Ed Jackson duo novels and since I read them in the wrong sequence, I was already familiar with the two police detectives. This is Ben and Tess's story on the mystery serial killer that brought the blonde, blue-eyed, well-to-do psychiatrist and the tall dark and handsome policeman together. A killer posing as a priest (murdering his victims with an amice-strangulation) is running wild and all the victims are blonde, petite women, very similar to Tess Court - the psychiatrist brought in on the case, much to Ben's dislike, to give a profile of the killer. The story of the romantic entanglement is predictable, however, as with all Nora stories, it is well written and easily blended in with the details and the efforts of searching for and capturing the killer. I was totally surprised by the outcome - had no idea who the killer was.
Well Written and Engaging.......2006-07-24
This review is for the revised Bantam paperback edition, August 2001. SACRED SINS was on the USA Today top 150-bestseller list in August and September 2001, peaking at position eight.
SACRED SINS is a suspense thriller with a touch of mystery and a romantic subplot. Dr. Tess Court, a young, attractive psychiatrist, is chosen to assist Detective Ben Paris, a handsome unattached detective, in finding a deranged serial killer. Paris doesn't think a psychological profile of the killer will be helpful, but he finds the physical profile of Tess irresistible. Throughout the story, the push and tug between Tess and Ben examines the treatment versus punishment of criminal dementia.
In SACRED SINS, the author switches amongst multiple points of view without separators, occasionally having two points of view in the same paragraph. At times, I found this confusing and difficult to follow. Otherwise, this story is well written and engaging.
My first Nora Roberts book... and only the beginning!.......2006-07-15
As the temperature soars in the nation's capital, the headlines stun the public when a young woman is found strangled to death with a priest's scarf. When another woman is murdered the same way shortly after, the police know they have a serial killer on the loose, a killer that has been dubbed by the media as "the Priest".
Ben Paris is one of the detectives assigned to the case. Ruthless and arrogant, he will leave nothing unturned until they nail the killer. When the captain and the mayor decides to enlist the help of a top-notch psychiatrist, Ben, who's never had much faith in her profession after his brother's suicide, doesn't hide his disdain with the idea. But the moment the doctor walks into the precinct, Ben cannot deny the strong attraction he feels for her, especially when she turns out to be totally different from what he had expected.
If not for her grandfather's request, Dr. Tess Court wouldn't have agreed to assist the police with their investigation. And after meeting the arrogant detective, she couldn't wait to finish profiling the murderer and be done with the case. But the more she studies the case, the more she finds herself drawn deeper to it until it is too late and the killer turns his attention on her...
SACRED SINS is a romantic thriller featuring two characters that find love amidst the terror of their jobs. Ben is a man haunted by his brother's suicide, a man who continues to live with the devastation of losing a great man whom he looked up to. It is this grief that causes some tension between him and Tess because of Ben's disdain for psychiatrists. As for Tess, while she initially couldn't care less what Ben thought of her and her job, it is her nurturing nature that pushes her to his side, wanting to know the reasons for his dislike and ease his pain. And as they are drawn together, we see the undeniable chemistry between them. Their byplays provide some fun and, sometimes, seductive reading.
This is my first book by Nora Roberts and certainly won't be the last. Not only did the story held my attention, but I also enjoyed reading about Ben's partner, the health-freak Ed. I swear some of his comments about the junk that Ben eats and what they do to the human body had me laughing out loud.

I can read any book from Ana Leigh, love all her books, like this one very much.
Colt and Cassie-SPOILERS.......2006-02-10
Favorite scene with Cassie-
The cooking contest. This scene was just too funny. And yet Cassie and Sam won.
Favorite scene with Colt-
His conversation with Ted about Cassie.
Together-
Colt erasing Ted's message, and almost making love on the schoolroom floor. Colt had to show Cassie that living for a man who might never return would slowly kill her. She had to move on with her life, not live in the past. And it wasn't the right place and time to make love.
What did you like about Cassie-
Her strength and mischeviousness. She wasn't afraid to take risks, although sometimes I didn't think she was thinking. Her love for her family, and for Sam, Bowie and Petey. Her wanting to go to California with Colt. Being the first to tell Colt her feelings. How brave she was. That braveness and strength also saved her life many a times.
What didn't you like about Cassie-
It wasn't that I didn't like these traits, but there were times that I thought that Cassie didn't think. She took stupid risks, which almost endangered herself and others. She was also willing to marry Ted, although she loved Colt. She was also willing to give up her life, waiting for Ted to return to her. Cassie had a good heart, but it was killing her.
What did you like about Colt-
I loved his affection for the rugrats. I loved that the town and its people came to mean so much to him. He helped Jeff grow up, and he helped Jethro when he was ill. He was willing to put his life on hold to help others. I loved that he wanted to make love, not have sex, that he believed there was a big difference. He really wanted to be a lawman. It suddenly became more important than California. Colt had the town wrapped around his little finger. Everyone wanted him to stay.
What didn't you like about Colt-
It was the speech he made about how things would change, esp. the town. He loved the town and its people, and yet, although the truth, I can't believe he would say such a thing. Willing to leave town, esp. Cassie.
If I had to cast Colt, I'd cast Billy Zane.
If I had to cast Cassie, I'd cast Gwyneth Paltrow.

A Sweet Western!.......2006-01-06
Ms. Leigh's second book in the "Fraser" series is a great addition to the historical romance genre. Ms. Leigh has created some very colorful characters for this read and as a result of this...the reader will find them pulled into the story.
Colt Fraser is bound for California in order to meet up with the rest of his family. He has company on his trip in the form of Cassie Braden and her brother. Cassie is sassy, spirited, and totally female. Colt appreciates a beautiful woman, and he is attracted to her but before he can act on his feelings his stagecoach is held up at gunpoint and everything changes with that moment. And he may have just made one enemy that he wasn't counting on. Colt is injured in a gunfight and finds himself taken to the small little town of Arena Roja. He has no idea that the spitfire calls this place home, or that her papa is the town sheriff. When Colt finds out that the next stagecoach to Santa Fe is not for another week, he allows Papa Braden to talk him into assuming the position of deputy sheriff. But will he be able to walk away from Arena Roja and Cassie, or will he finally settle down and carry on the family tradition of marrying a Yankee?
Ms. Leigh's read offers a little bit of everything. A colorful cast of characters, one stubborn horse, laughter, and a romance that will keep you glued to the pages. I'm happy to see that the western historical is finally making a comeback and this effort is truly worth getting a hold of. I look forward to reading the next in this series and if this effort is anything to judge by it will be well worth the wait.
HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.......2006-01-06
AFTER READING "CLAY" I WAITED EXPECTANTLY FOR THIS BOOK. UNFORTUNATELY IT HAS A HUNKY HERO, A SPUNKY LIKEABLE FEMALE LEAD
AND A VERY POOR PLOT/STORY LINE. THE 3 LITTLE KIDS AND CUTE DIALOGUE WAS DELIGHTFUL BUT THIS WAS JUST AN OLD "HARLEQUIN" TYPE
READ.
fun western romance .......2005-12-27
Having served under Stuart for the Confederacy, Colt Fraser heads by stage on the Santa Fe Trail to California to meet up with his three siblings. Colt enjoys what would otherwise be a tedious trip because of his fellow rider, feisty spitfire Cassie Braden accompanied by her brother Jeff. Colt likes the pretty Cassie especially her courage and spirit. However, five armed robbers hold up their coach; in the ensuing chaos a somewhat drunk Jeff fires a shot. Colt, protecting Cassie, takes a bullet in his shoulder from the robbers. He is taken to nearby Arena Roja, Cassie's hometown, to receive medical attention.
Colt learns that the next stagecoach to Santa Fe is not due through the small town until next week. As such Sheriff Braden, who needs help, persuades Colt to become his deputy temporarily in spite of some people objecting to a stinky Reb. As he performs law enforcement work for Cassie's father, Colt and Cassie begin to fall in love, but will the newly appointed deputy sheriff stick around long enough to recognize his feelings.
The second "Fraser" western romance (see FRASER: CLAY) is a fabulous tale due to an eccentric cast including an obstinate steed, who makes Mr. Ed look like a team player. While the unconventional townsfolk either matchmake or try to run the Rebel out of town; either way they place the lead couple into some amusing situations. Fans will enjoy the antics while wondering whether Cole will stay or go. Ms. Leigh provides an enchanting Americana tale that sub-genre fans will cherish.
