Book Description
New York Times bestselling author
Nora Roberts enchants readers once again with two unique and intriguing classic tales about passion so powerful it transcends time itself!
Time Was
Stranded in the present, time traveler Caleb Hornblower's biggest problem wasn't returning to the twenty-third century -- it was falling in love with the beguiling Liberty Stone, who showed him a love more powerful than time itself. Though he belonged in the future, how could he leave the past -- and Liberty -- behind?
Times Change
Cynical Jacob Hornblower had followed his brother Caleb into the past, hoping to lure him back home. But his mission was soon forgotten when he found himself captivated by Liberty's spitfire sister, Sunny. Can a man who is down on love understand the truly timeless power of the human heart?
Customer Reviews:
I've read this book time and "time and again!".......2006-06-20
These are two stories of brothers who love each other and their parents very much and live in the 23rd century. The sisters they will meet live in the 1980's and were brought up by parents who married very young and were part of the "hippie/flower child" movement.
Any time (no pun intended) you see a book about time travel, you really MUST suspend your belief system as this is FANTASY and science FICTION. I think many reviewers have forgetten that fact! For me, I enjoyed the wonderful character development in these two stories as we get to know Caleb and Libby before they get together and also Jacob and Sunny. We also get to meet a learn a little about Libby and Sunny's parents.
The fun of the future and time travel makes a great vehicle for these stories but what really makes them stick with me are knowing and rooting for the characters!! I have re-read these a couple of times just for the enjoyment.
Lighten up and have fun with these stories!!
Time And Again: Time Was/Times Change.......2006-06-13
This is one of my all time favorite Nora Roberts books. I have read these two stories at least five times each. They are captivating and absolute page turners. What I find truly interesting is the fact that even though these were written some years ago some of Nora's predictions about the future are coming to fruition (for example, taking medication by tabs on the tongue). The stories are of two brothers that travel through time, the first one by mistake and then the second brother to find the first and each finding their "match" outside their own century. As always, Ms. Roberts paints such vivid tales that the reader is truly taken on a journey with each story. I cannot recommend this book enough.
Time Stood Too Still.......2006-05-09
I am an avid Nora fan and I love everything she writes. Some stories are exceptional; others good, but always entertaining. Time and Again was entertaining to a point. Stories of Caleb and Jacob Hornblower crashing down to the 20th century from the 23rd century and each meeting up with the Stone sisters - Liberty and Sunbeam. The first story concentrates on Libby & Caleb and the second story is a carbon copy of the first with the other two siblings. My main objection was the repetitive storylines and the fact that in the first story, there seemed to be more sex than story. It was an okay read but certainly not up the to the high standards and excellent writing that I know Nora is more than capable of providing even the most critical reader. I finished the book, but definitely would not pass it on as a "must" read.
The Best Time Travel I have Read.......2006-04-23
There's more time travel than orginially intended since the reader goes back a full decade and a half before cable news, internet mania, pre-emptive strikes, genetically altered foods, etc. References to the heroines' parents as 60's flower children-made-good adds additional refreshing texture. Best of all, this is powerhouse romance with love scenes about love in two stories requiring the transcendence of time for the love to prevail. The black hole concept is very credible. I preferred it to Michael Crichton's disembodyment through time machines that never made sense and the details of which were distracting to the story. Having heroes from the 23rd century come back to early 1990's America beats a trip to medieval chaos any day.
Very predictable........2006-04-12
I've never really been a fan of Nora Robert's books with more than one story in it, they've all felt rushed and poorly written. While Time & Time Again does slightly better than some of the others I've read, it's full of typos and is very predictable. The story follows 2 sisters through a rather dull and predictable story about brothers who come back from the 23rd century and fall in love.
What bothered me the more than anything, was the absolute lack for any science fiction elements. This story deals heavily with science fiction themes, so it would have been nice to see her make an attempt to include a little bit of explanation. Sure, she'll throw in the occasional reference to a black hole, or a space ship, but for the most part whenever the boys are questioned about anything, they shrug it off with "you wouldn't understand" or "there's no time to explain now."
Time & Time Again Time Was\Times Change has the same problem her murder mysteries have. She's not a science-fiction author.
There were also several cases of rather blatant grammar and editing errors riddled throughout the book.
Though she has some very sweet romantic moments, she has done much better work.

Book Description
Brenda Joyce has enthralled millions of readers with her New York Times bestelling novels. Now, join us in the next chapter of her unforgettable storytelling: the Francesca Cahill novels, written as B.D. Joyce. Embark on an adventure of danger and romance and let yourself be transported to another era where your senses will be stimulated and your emotions stirred....DEADLY DESIREThe time is turn-of-the-century New York City. Society's elite hosts glittering balls inside sprawling mansions while outside, the teeming streets harbor secrets of their own.New York City's Police Commissioner Rick Bragg has been called upon to investigate a shocking crime. Reluctant to pull Francesca into a case that could be very dangerous, Rick also knows the beautiful and brilliant heiress has a natural ability for sleuthing that could aid him-even if it means working side by side with a woman who tempts him like no other. And so Francesca and Rick begin a harrowing journey through the squalid underworld of the city that plunges them deeper and deeper into a peril neither could have imagined-and a desire that only continues to grow....
Customer Reviews:
Definitely the best Francesca Cahill novel yet!!.......2005-09-23
"Deadly Desire" is author Brenda Joyce's fourth installment, and by far the best book yet in her historical mystery series featuring New York City debutante, bluestocking and amateur sleuth Francesca Cahill. Miss Cahill, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, is an unwilling member of New York City's social elite at the turn of the 20th century. She lives in a Fifth Avenue mansion, with her parents and older brother, attends glittering society balls and fundraisers, and is a champion for social reform. An intellectual, but not a snob, Francesca is determined to do something with her mind other than plan dinner parties. Unbeknownst to her mother, she enrolled in Barnard College with aspirations to become a journalist. However, since she met and fell in love with newly appointed police commissioner Rick Bragg and began solving crimes, her grades have been suffering. With each new book Rick's and Fran's friendship has grown and their love for each other has deepened, especially since they spend so much time together working on cases. Unfortunately, there are complications in the commissioner's life which prohibit him from proposing marriage and planning a future with the young woman he cares for so much.
Although I am hooked on the series' secondary characters and their ongoing stories, I have been very skeptical about the quality and credibility of the narrative in the first three books. With "Deadly Desire" I think Ms. Joyce has hit her stride. This actually seems more like an installment in a serial novel than a stand alone romance/mystery. In fact, most of the characters are from the previous books and the mystery is part of the continuing storyline, involving Francesca, her family, friends and those who touch upon their lives. This approach suits very well and certainly has me returning for more. There are still some major flaws, but since I am so absorbed in the various subplots, I tend to overlook them at this point. The author has succeeded in holding my interest and has me coming back for more - not an easy thing to do!
Sarah Channing, a brilliant artist and Francesca's soon-to-be sister-in-law, discovers that her art studio has been vandalized. One portrait, in particular, has been brutally slashed and smeared with blood red paint. Sarah pleads with Francesca to help her find the person who committed this savage act of destruction. Fran decides to interview Calder Hart, Rick's half brother, wealthy art connoisseur and womanizer, who has befriended Francesca and is clearly attracted to her. If any other artist in the area has had similar problems with vandals, Calder would know. However, involving him, spending more time with him, is courting trouble because Calder would like to be much more than Francesca's friend.
Meanwhile, Rick's, (and Calder's), family is having a reunion of sorts in New York and, of course Fran meets them all - patriarch, Rathe Bragg, mother Grace, sister Lucy Savage with her twin toddlers and adolescent stepson, and brother Rourke, a medical student. While lunching with Lucy, Francesca realizes that her new friend is being stalked by a ruthless criminal who followed her and her children from Texas. When the thug kidnaps Chrissy, one of the twins, Fran and the Bragg clan pull together to find the little girl...hopefully alive.
Complicating things further, Leigh Ann Bragg, Rick's estranged wife, enters the picture and calls on Francesca. And of course, Fran's brother Evan continues having problems with his upcoming marriage, his father, and gambling debts. Sister Constance's marriage is rocky and her husband, British Lord Neil Montrose, is beside himself with angst, etc., etc..
Say what you will, I am hooked! If you are interested, I would suggest reading the previous Francesca Cahill novels before "Deadly Desire," as this is a continuing saga and very addictive. ENJOY!!

Another Good Deadly Novel.......2004-07-09
This like all of the novels in the series is worth reading. I love the interactions between the characters, especially Francesca and Hart.
This one will hold your attention!.......2004-03-03
Set in 1902. New York City's Police Commissioner Rick Bragg was dragged into another crime investigation with Francesca Cahill. This time Francesca was out to help her best friend, Sarah Channing. Sarah's home had been broken into and a few of the paintings she had been creating had been destroyed. But was it an attack against Sarah or against one of the two people who were the subjects of the paintings that had been destroyed?
Add to this a love triangle involving Francesca, Rick, and Calder, as well as, someone stalking Lucy (Rick and Calder's sister).
**** This book is a mixture of adventure, excitement, and mysteries. The love triangle seems to continue in each book of the series. There is always something going on to hold the attention of the readers. Great reading! ****

deliciously entertaining.......2003-10-26
I can't believe some of the dumb reviews this series has gotten. No one is pretending this series is supposed to be anything other than what it is. It is a romantic and mysterious series. It delivers on that in a fantastic way. Miss Cahill is a very likeable character. Someone suggested she was overwrought. Well, she is 20 years old and it is 1902, so seeing some of the shocking things she has encountered would cause that, especially in one so innocent. I find her endearing and would be very sad indeed were she any other way. She also has fallen in love for the first time in her life, so I would imagine she is going to have Mr. Bragg on her mind alot. Especially since this is a romance series. The mysteries are good, they keep me guessing. The...[extreme] chemistry between the characters is stunning and provacative. I love the triangle of Calder, Francesca, and Rick Bragg. I am not usually a big fan of romance, but Brenda Joyce has a way of writing that is very addicitive. At least in this series. I do not like her modern novels as well. This series is a guilty little pleasure one should allow themself, like a soap opera. It is not meant to be serious or brilliant, but in a way it is quite intelligent just fot the simple fact that it can whisk one away with such force. Is'nt that the point of reading sometimes? There is nothing like a good escape. Not every book is meant to make us think or expand our horizons for goodness sake. Anyone who does not like these books probably is not the type to sit in a hot bath and eat chocolates... If that is what you like, then read these books beginning with the first. You will not be disappointed.
heroine is a tad overwrought.......2003-04-19
I might have given it more stars if the heroine were more intelligent and less overwrought. I did enjoy reading it, but Fran seems too obsessed with Bragg to think coherently. She disapproves of her brother-in-law's fidelity but yet she can kiss/make out with Bragg. I find it unbelieveable that she could have forgetten to tell Bragg about his wife's impending return to NY since it has consumed her mind for several days. I was growing tired of her lies whenever anyone implied she was interested in Hart, whom I preferred to Bragg. (At least he isn't married!) I also thought she could have wounded Craddock before he captured her because he didn't seem to have a gun at that point.

Riviting.......2007-03-20
Reviewed by Louise Landeta for Reader Views (2/07)
This is a work of fiction and a mystery. The heroine is accused of multiple murders, two detectives arrive at her house to arrest her and she talks them into staying with her long enough for her to unfold a long, complicated story. In return for the time and attention they agree to give, she agrees to provide full detailed confessions to each murder. The detectives are able to get permission from their superiors to accomplish this in two weeks maximum.
I believe this is a writer with great promise--she has obvious raw talent and managed to weave a riveting story. There were some touches that struck me as being quite good and some of the scenes beautifully created character.
With all truthfulness, however, I was bothered by a number of things which can be reversed. I found the writing style wordy and at times not fitting to the character or the general diction of the situation. The use of well-worn clichés and erroneous grammar were also quite distracting. Apparently the author is aware of this herself as she put on note on the book stating that there are some "editing issues."
I admit to being put off by the story initially as I found the premise that two detectives with whom she had some previous connection would be permitted to stay at her house for two weeks to sew up her confession. In truth, it still seems preposterous to me. Nevertheless, I kept reading.
Ms. Henning put together an excellent mystery, and I happen to love this genre. I have read numerous mysteries over the years and this one ranks right up there with the best. As the story unfolded I became more and more riveted by it, wondering where all this was going. It did not disappoint.
My suggestions are for Ms. Henning to enroll in two types of courses: Basic English grammar and creative writing and to work on these until she becomes superbly proficient in each. As I said, she has the essential raw material to become an excellent writer, and I highly encourage her to stay with it.

Genre: Fiction
Title: Deadly Dreams and Desires
Author: J. Henning
Murder after horrific murder have gone unsolved.
Who could have performed such heinous acts against other human beings? What could possibly drive man or woman to defile a human body as this murderer has done? Detectives Tulley and Saunders are sent to interview and learn how the petite, attractive Alex could possibly be accused of such crimes and after meeting her, Tulley's doubts are even greater. Day after day, the two detectives listen to her tales of abuse at the hands of her victims. Who really is the victim?
J. Henning tells a tale of abuse, murder and indescribable pain. The two detectives, though it is against their beliefs and their code of ethics, begin to have sympathy for this gentle, kind woman who has suffered so much. Her tales are beyond what any human being would be able to withstand, and even so she is willing to take her punishment and deal with the consequences. Tulley and Saunders are powerless to save her, until Tulley faces an extraordinary experience of his own.
Author, J. Henning lives in Nevada with her husband. This is her first novel.

Lots of twists and turns.......2006-11-15
I found this book an interesting read, with many twists and turns, and just the right mix of comedy and thriller to keep the reader entertained from start to finish.
When Detectives Tully and Saunders call at the door of Alex Jordan's house, she knows exactly what they want--to question her on the murder of their co-worker, Lt. Jack Stillman. Although they are sure that she committed the heinous act, they don't have enough to pin it on her, and thus hope to squeeze a confession out of her. So, when she offers them a full confession, as well as details of the other murders she has carried out--on one condition--they can't resist. That condition is that they interview her in her own house, surrounded by the things she loves, including her boxer, Ed.
Thus ensues a tale of abuse and misfortune, and the revenge that Alex carries out on those people who inflicted this abuse on her. The two detectives can hardly believe the tale of pure horror that unravels before their eyes, and begin to feel an element of compassion for their cop-killing interviewee.
This book's introduction states that this story is based on events that occurred in the author's past, but that all of the victims are still alive and well. I found this somewhat confusing, and it was very hard to identify the elements of truth, and what parts of the story were fiction. I feel that maybe the author should have elaborated somewhat on this statement, or leave it out altogether.
I also feel that the cover of this book does not do it justice. I found the cover very plain and not the type of cover that would attract its target audience--thriller readers.
Also, just a quick note: although the story is interesting, throughout the whole book there are words input incorrectly (for example to instead of too, or im instead of him). These problems could have been fixed it the author had the book edited or at least proofread before it was printed.
(Also, just a quick note: although the spelling in this book is very good, throughout the whole book there are words input incorrectly (for example "to" instead of "too," or "im" instead of "him").
All in all, an interesting read, but perhaps the introduction is somewhat confusing for the reader.
Armchair Interviews: Interesting story where proofreading would have helped the finished project.
Deadly Dreams and Desires simultaneously chills and fascinates the reader........2006-11-05
Written by J. Henning, Deadly Dreams and Desires is a chilling novel of murder for revenge. When two detectives arrest Alex Jordan for the alleged killing of their friend and co-worker, her horrific, explicit, and brutal confessions reveal that the murder case is far more complex than it would appear at first glance. A dark story of manipulation, a woman taken to the breaking point, and threatening human darkness so profound it makes two detectives strive to protect a cop-killer from the gas chamber, Deadly Dreams and Desires simultaneously chills and fascinates the reader.
Deadly Dreams and Desires.......2006-02-10
A thourghly enjoyable read, flowed well, held my interests and kept me anticipating what plot twists could possibly happen next. The lead character Alex is quite endearing, creating a desire to comfort her when considering her troubled youth and existing situation. Would recommend this book to my friends.
Book Description
The second volume in the Seven Deadly Sins series, Speaking of Greed is a collection of short stories on the destructive deadly sin known as greed. In addition to being the title of this anthology, "Speaking of Greed" is also the title of Lawrence Block's original novella that leads off this unique collection.
"My task as an anthologist in this series," Block write in the introduction, "is threefold: first, I have to pick the stories; then I have to write a longish novella with my four series characters, whom we know only as the priest, the doctor, the soldier, and the policeman; finally, I have to hammer out an introduction."
The stories Block has chosen are delightful. His novella delivers what he promises. And the introduction is a heads-up plea for authors to ensure that their work will continue to be read after they are no longer around to write any more.
Included in this stellar anthology are the following stories and authors:
"Speaking of Greed" by Lawrence Block "The Word' by F. Paul Wilson "Hitler, Elvis, and Me" by Doug Allyn "One Hit Wonder" by Gabrielle Kraft "The $5,000 Getaway" by Jack Ritchie "Rotten to the Core" by Jeremiah Healy "Front Man" by David Morrell "Water's Edge" by Robert Bloch "A Taste of Paradise" by Bill Pronzini "Bits" by Mat Coward "Come Down From The Hills" by John F. Suter "The Wrong Hands" by Peter Robinson "The High Cost of Living" by Dorothy Cannell "My Heart Cries For You" by Bill Crider "Inside Job" by Ed Gorman "Deadly Fantasies" by Marcia Muller "Death Scene" by Helen Nielsen "Good-bye, Sue Ellen" by Gillian Roberts "Death and Diamonds" by Sue Dunlap "A Ticket Out" by Brenda DuBois

Book Description
This first volume in the Seven Deadly Sins Series, "Speaking of Lust" is a collection of outstanding short stories on that exceedingly deadly sin we call lust. In addition to being the title of this anthology, "Speaking of Lust" is also the title of Lawrence Block's original novella that finishes this unique collection.
Customer Reviews:
Lust Leads to Dark Undertow........2005-01-29
"Lust is desire raised to a level that prompts unacceptable behavior" is a worthy aphorism to encapsulate the contents of "Speaking of Lust: Stories of Forbidden Desire." This is the first volume in the seven deadly sins series and is a compilation of 17 short stories and Lawrence Block's novella (also named "Speaking of Lust"), the capstone of the collection. The editor Block chose to explore the darker side of humanity, the mortal sin of lust, by handpicking short stories that generally lean towards the macabre with dashes of sex. The skillful writing leads the reader without effort to a world full of double agents and desire perverted. Clive Barker, Paul Bishop, and Ed Gorman, to name a few, are the writers that reward with numerous delicious twists and surprises.
In the first short story, "Crack," by James Hall, a voyeur's obsession over a teenage girl possesses him to a frightful conclusion. The unnamed Fulbright fellow confesses, "In most matters I considered myself a scrupulously moral man. I had always been one who could be trusted with other people's money or their most damning secrets. But like so many of my fellow Puritans I long ago had discovered that when it came to certain libidinous temptations I was all too easily swept off my safe moorings into the raging currents of erotic gluttony." "Crack" is a thorough psychological study of how an innocent beginning becomes pathological.
The characters throughout all of the pieces find themselves powerless to fight a desire that has progressed to a full-blown demon. "Speaking of Lust" is a testament to the power of persistent malcontent thoughts. Evil thoughts eventually have no joy staying inside the ravaged mind and long to be transformed into "unacceptable behavior" for release. The collection examines beautifully how sin does not happen out of the blue. The writers brilliantly illustrate that many bad decisions were made before the ultimate transgressions of murder, suicide, incest, and rape occurred. A showcase of lust gone awry, its inevitable tragic conclusions will leave you fulfilled: or perhaps wanting more.

Sin is in........2002-01-05
Now here's some reading material to get really excited about.
Lawrence Block, best known for his mystery series, especially the ones revolving around private investigator Matthew Scudder and thief Bernie Rhodenbarr, also is the editor of the June 2001 compilation of short stories entitled "Speaking of Lust."
What really makes you stand at attention is the fact that "Lust" is the first in a series of short story collections that focuses on the seven deadly sins - greed, sloth, pride, envy, wrath and gluttony are the others, for those who skipped "Seven."
Do you realize what this means? At some point, there's going to be a collection of short stories devoted to fat people! And another about those lazy bones that simply refuse to get out of bed. Sigh ... at last, my kind of people get their time in the spotlight.
Seriously, I don't know why this type of thing hasn't been done before. Kudos go to Block and whomever is helping him in this infinitely clever maneuver for making lust, everyone's favorite deadly sin, the focus of the first book, which is smart for two reasons. One, because everyone likes lust, it'll be sure to grab the most readers. And now they've got their work cut out for them in finding clever stories that will give the other six the same kind of attention.
If "Lust" is any indication, we're in for a treat when the presumably-titled "Speaking of Gluttony" and "Speaking of Wrath" come out. It offers a fabulous array of stories that range from delightfully sinful to shockingly sexy.
Among the best offerings:
* James W. Hall's "Crack," about a man who discovers a crack in the wall that peeks into the neighbor's bathroom and allows him to spy on their 15-year-old daughter.
* "Ro Erg," by Robert Weinberg, about a man who uses a credit card error to create a whole new persona for himself.
*Ed Gorman's "The End of It All," in which a once hideous monstrosity gets made over into the handsomest man on earth, and prepares to seduce his high school crush ... and her daughter ...
* "The Girls in Villa Costas," by Simon Brett, about a machinating womanizer who finds himself torn between a beautiful woman and her less-attractive-but-stands-to-inherit-the-family-fortune sister.
Aside from introducing and editing the book, Block also writes the title novella. It is here that another reading delight emerges, and in his introduction Block promises that subsequent tales using the same characters will follow in the future books.
Most likely using Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" as a model (Did anyone else enjoy reading this classic in high school? After all, those stories about white whales, scarlet letters and tales about two cities, this classic had farting and people having sex in orange trees! Finally, some decent reading material!), Block's story is really just several people - a priest, a policeman, a doctor, a soldier and an old guy - sitting around playing cards and talking about the ways lust has affected their occupations and lives. Lively discussion and debates ensue.
It's an ingenious way to go about telling the story, and the stories within the story will have the reading audience on the edge of their seats (pay close attention to the priest's tale).
Best of all, the stories are relatively short, so even if there comes the rare offering that doesn't quite tickle your funnybone, you can skip it guilt free and go on to the next treasure.
Reading about sin probably wasn't meant to be this much fun. But, oh, how sweet it is.
18 short stories.......2001-09-26
This book has 18 short stories dealing with theme about lust. It is first book of seven that will deal with the seven deadly sins. There are several well known writers who has written a story for this collection, (Joan Hess, Clive Barker, Joyce Carol Oates). Most of the stories have rather predictable ending, but they are enjoyable stories. My top three stories in this book are the Lawrence Block's story(Speaking Of Lust), Clive Barker's story (The Age of Desire), and Robert Weinberg's story (Ro Erg). If you like any of these writers you want to check this book out.
