My tunnel dark and lonely.......2006-01-18
As a resident in Argentina, I have learned that the Argentine dream comes true for someone who lives a good life in or around Buenos Aires, drives a European car, speaks English, travels to Europe and/or to the United States, and works for an international company. Hence Argentina, a nation built on immigrants and with a strong culture, has never developed a strong national identity. A friend of mine, studying here for her doctorate in counseling, commented recently that her time is spent studying French theories.
France is what I had in mind as I read Ernesto Sábato's El túnel (The Tunnel), which describes the descent and fall of Juan Pablo Castel, a noted Argentine painter who becomes addicted to María Iribarne, the only person he feels understands what his work really means. Castel does not love, can not love, will not love, and only briefly, at times, rises above his own demons to experience lucidity and the fresh air of common sense. His soul cannot be touched, and his dark world of pain is like a dark tunnel without end. María, a married woman touched to her core by one of his paintings, forgoes her vows to be with and comfort a man incapable of receiving it, thus losing out on the comfort she hopes to receive from him.
The book, written in 1948, impactingly expresses the existentialism and nihilism that came for fore (and in the case of nihilism returned to the fore) after World War II. The chief proponent of this existentialism was the French philosopher Sartre, and one character in The Tunnel is found reading a Sartre book. This is not to suggest that Sábato is merely rehashing the work of another. On the contrary his work plumbs the depths of these two schools of thought: he existentially looks for meaning as life does not inherently possess it, and in his case meaning can not be found, only nihilistic darkness. He ably expresses the inability of Castel to find joy, even when it is there for the taking. Even when Castel seems to break through to what might be called a more sound reasoning, the reader has doubts that it will endure. Sábato takes these schools of thought and gives them a novelistic passion, making this a classic of modern Latin literature. And, like other Argentine writes such as Manuel Puig and Julio Cortázar, he makes use of the geography of Buenos Aires, showing how the city has had its effect on contemporary literature.
Castel, due to his own worldview, never leaves his tunnel and suffers for it. The reader can leave it, but only after Sábato adroitly narrates why Juan Pablo Castel has done what he has done.
A very intriguing novel.......2005-05-23
First of all this was the first novel I have read by Ernesto Sabato and it has left me with a great impression of his writing style. It is very intriguing from the get go as one learns the outcome of the novel first and then the story develops afterwards. The protagonist Juan is a reclusive painter striving for acknowledgement. Maria becomes an obsession since she is the only one who can understand his work. His passion, obsession and desesperation leads him to kill Maria and gives the readers insight to his "tunel" (his torchered inner soul).
The only other novel that I read along these lines in terms of uniqueness of plot and intrigue was L'entranger by Albert Camus. Definitely they are both one of kind novels. A recommended read.
Watch this cult novel !.......2004-11-07
In every case there was a dark asnd loney tunnel : mine!
That is the initial premise who will open you the gate to get in in the complex world of Martell and Maria . The deeep influence this book has had since its first release has reached to Milan Kundera .
The complex and dramatic circumstances which involves the disturbed and introspective character of Martell is written with in a perfect style and it has not any to envy to the best works of Edgar Allan Poe or Guy de Maupassant .
Ernesto Sabato , Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortazar conform the gloriuous trilogy of Argentine writers in the XX Century.
One of a kind.......2003-04-13
This is the only piece of fiction I have read that has grabbed me to the point that 'I could not put it down'. Juan Pablo Castel is obviously insane ---- but then why do I keep reading his confession? This is 115 pages and it just does not stop. Don't bother trying to categorize this work. It is one of a kind.
A must-read book!!.......2002-02-20
It is amazing how the aothor make you keep on reading inspit of telling you the end of the book in the first line. You have to read it!!

Haddock is introduced in the Golden Claws.......2007-08-23
Thundering Typhoons!! Had been trying to get my hands on this issue as it introduces my fave. character!! It compliments the package well because the issues are in a sequence and one ends up getting more of blistering barnacles! I would recommend this to Haddock's admiration club and otherwise as well!
A little disappointing.......2007-02-07
The quality of the printing is far from perfect. It smooches on several pages. Also, I read the French version first and the English one is, in my opinion, rather lame. A lot of work would need to be done to improve it.
Tintin on his adventures!.......2007-01-21
I have read many Tintin adventures and love them all. Herge can make very funny adventure stories.
In the book, The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin meets Captain Haddock. Captain Haddok loves whisky. Professor Calculus is not here. He comes in Red Rackham's treasure.

A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage.......2006-09-09
Volume 3: The Crab With the Golden Claws (1942), The Shooting Star (1942), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943). This is the third instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.
As I mentioned in my review for Volume 1, as a child I read these stories in no particular order. So, when reading The Crab With the Golden Claws, I was surprised to see Captain Haddock in such a pitiable state, having made his acquaintance in later adventures...
But this is where he is introduced, and the friendship that develops between Haddock and Tintin not only allows the alcoholic captain to bloom, it lifts the curtain on one of the most entertaining, impulsive (Haddock = ad hoc, get it? In French, the pronunciation of the two is exactly the same...), flawed, and in essence loyal, good hearted and lovable characters in all comicdom. His irascible nature will be abundantly prodded with insufferable foils (Wagg, Abdullah, Castafiore, the Thom(p)sons, and sundry villains) throughout the series. We also meet the sinister Allan for the first time. The story takes place in Morocco, and the child sees yet more of our planet's vistas, while the adult continues to revel in Hergé's textured adventures and detailed settings, as well as a terrifying dream sequence.
Michael Farr's "Tintin: The Complete Companion" (highly recommended), gives a glimpse at why Tintin did not take in the USA as it did in the rest of the world, and that has to do with a couple of panels from The Shooting Star. Though with some brilliant sequences, such as the cinematic seasickness scene, it is not as captivating as the usual Tintin standard, but again, one does not want to miss a single adventure.
The Secret of the Unicorn has a number of threads, one of which develops into the sequel, Red Rackham's Treasure.
The Adventures of Tintin: The Crab With the Golden Claws / The Shooting Star / The Secret of the Unicorn (3 Complete Adventures .......2006-08-31

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Here you get the brief super-powered backstory, and what happened to Jewel, and why she gave up the whole hero thing.
Luke Cage and the very nasty depradations of the Purple Man appear as major parts. It is all quite sordid. What do you expect an egotistical super villain with mind control will get up to?
The best........2005-02-27
What is there to say here that hasn't already been said about volumes one, two and three? Bendis' characterization, dialogue and storytelling are amazing, Michael Gaydos' pencils and inks are perfect, and the colors are great, as well.
But there is something else, because this is the bes volume of the series. This volume contains some great (heartrending, maybe, but great) flashbacks, and some of the best dialogue yet. It's impossible not to fall in love with Jessica Jones, despite her demeanor and her self-loathing.
Bendis, in an unusual move, introduced an all-new character to the Marvel Universe, fitting her into much of Marvel's history--this, before Marvel started on popping out a new character every month, as they are now; this was during the decade during which Marvel continually rehashed the same characters--and it worked so well.
This volume has the best story, the best characterizaton, the best dialogue, yet. The artwork is beautiful, as always, and the subtle (as well as the obvious) changes in artwork and style used to differ between different times are a nice touch, as well.
a great anti-heroine.......2004-09-29
I started reading this book because Matt Hollingsworth gave it to me, and it has since become one of my favorites. I love reading it in public, just so I can tell people about it and say, no, it is not the TV series!
Despite having some impressive powers, Jessica Jones has never been your typical heroine. She's a trash-talking, normal-looking chick who has trouble making sense of life. In this final book, though, we get to make sense of hers. We finally learn how she became a hero, and the awful reason why she stopped being one.
Bendis is not big on action. He is not big on fantasy. What makes him one of the great writers today is that he is big on dialogue, and character. Jessica is a beautiful creation. Her insecurites make her stronger.
Bendis is also great at pulling obscure MU mythology out of the woodwork and making it interesting. Carol Danvers, the uber-heroine best known for being the lady Rogue stole her powers from, is the perfectly perfect foil for the troubled Jessica. The Purple Man, meanwhile, is pulled out from the archives to tear her down. Jean Grey, Luke Cage, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury and the Ant Man also fill the pages. Great stuff.
The end.......2004-09-12
The fourth and final storyarc of Brian Michael Bendis' brilliant Alias reveals the origin of ex-Avenger turned burned out private investigator Jessica Jones and her connection to Killgrave AKA the Purple Man. Even though it only lasted for 28 issues, Alias was truly something special. Bendis' look at the underbelly of the Marvel universe made for compulsive reading, and the characterization of Jessica was the flawed human that readers could actually relate to. The relationship between Jessica and Luke Cage also gets tied up, and it sets the stage for Bendis' new series the Pulse; which has become a cult hit for Marvel. The art by Michael Gaydos still gives the book the same grittiness it's had since it's first issue saw the light of day, and the series comes to a satisfying end thanks to Bendis' brilliant (as usual) storytelling. His transformation of the Purple Man from third rate Marvel villain to mass murdering maniac must be seen to be believed. All in all, it's sad that Alias is over, and if you missed out on the series than you should definitely pick up all four volumes.
Too Bad It's Over.......2004-04-22
This is the 4th and final Alias TPB. It reveals a good deal about Jessica's past which ties in with the Purple Man story line. This series has been great all the way through, though I'd say the first and third TPB's were the best of the four. I hate to see it go but at least her character will continue on in The Pulse. I highly recommend any of the Alias books to someone wanting an entertaining and different look on the Marvel Universe.

Hot!!!!!!!.......2005-01-09
I just love this series & was so pleased to read Jeanie Cesarini's story, "An act of love". It's a must just for that story alone. It follows on from her earlier story "The spy who loved me". Shelby, was mentioned in the previous story finally got her own story & it was brilliant. It was great to see Paige & Chris again.
The others are equally as brilliant, I was not disapointed with any of the stories.
They are:
Enslaved - Desiree Lindsey
The bodyguard - Betsy Morgan & Susan Paul
The love slave - Emma Holly.
Get this -- if only for Emma Holly's novella!.......2004-05-17
I skipped over a couple of installments because Emma Holly is featured in Secrets Volume 4. I am a big Emma Holly fan and I've devoured everything she's written. The Love Slave, her novella in this anthology, is so hot it sizzles! Set in make believe times, Princess Lily has to choose three gorgeous men to attend to all of her needs. While she revels in the attention of two of the slaves, it is the tall, dark, gorgeous and mysterious Grae that refuses to submit to her desires. Not only is he rough and insubordinate, he has a painful secret that keeps him at bay. This is a beautiful erotic story that awoke my senses as well as my intellect. Emma Holly has done it again!
Desiree Lindsey's Enslaved is my second favorite. This is a wonderful novella of dark desires and exquisite building of tension. Nicholas Summers is one of the most insatiable heroes I've ever read and the scenes are smoldering and delicious. I'm not familiar with Ms. Lindsey's work, but I'll be sure to look for her stuff in the future. The other two novellas, An Act of Love and The Bodyguard, are contemporary romanticas that failed to spark my interest. I guess I was in the mood for some fanciful stories. The Love Slave and Enslaved more than satisfied my craving for the same. I recommend Secrets Volume 4. Emma Holly's delectable story is well worth the cover price!
A Cross Between Romance and Black Lace.......2003-07-02
Anyone who had read the Black Lace books will recognize Emma Holly's name. She is one of the best writers of erotica that I've come across. On my quest to collect everything ever written by her, I found Secrets vol. 4. Let me say that I was pleasantly surprised by the other stories in this collection.
Each story is based on a romantic premise, so readers of romance novels will enjoy this book. The "steam" factor has been pumped up, so readers who don't like graphic love scenes should avoid these stories. However, people looking for one-handed reading would do well to remember that these stories have PLOTS. That said, I enjoyed every one - but especially Emma Holly's.
Others have done a wonderful job reviewing the contents of this book, so I won't rehash. This review is just to emphasize how much you will NOT regret purchasing Secrets vol. 4. :-)
Get this one for The Love Slave.......2002-10-09
A good anthology, but flawed by "The Bodyguard," which seemed cobbled together, and suffers from an absolutely terrible ending that had my mouth falling open in disbelief. Not what I expect from the series, at all!
"An Act of Love" is entertaining and steamy, a good contemporary romance that apparently picks up a character from a previous volume. Made me want to get the original!
"Enslaved" was OK, but the heroine annoyed me, which wrecked the story. That's more personal bias than any fault of the author - I need a really strong female protagonist in period romances.
"The Love Slave" was AMAZING, the best story I've read in the Secrets anthologies. I read it twice through in two sittings. The sci-fi premise is similar to another novel I read by a different author but the characterization and romance are so much stronger I found myself thinking, "This is the book the other author was trying to write." Terrible, I know, but honest!
Steamy, steamy, hot erotica - heart-tugging romance - Emma Holly is my new hero. lol I'd recommend this volume on the strength of this one story alone.
Desiree' Lindsey's debut novella, ENSLAVED is a sensation!!!.......1999-01-05
Romance Comm says, "In ENSLAVED Lindsey adds a unique twist to a classic plot creating a passionate story of love lost and found. Her characters live and breathe in this appealing tale producing a powerful impact not soon forgotten. Exquisite, erotic love scenes sear the senses. ENSLAVED will take your breath away. Hot! Hot! Hot! ~

Expect the Unexpected...........2000-04-16
The amazing saga continues...is Sagan prophesying the future in these books of the ancient past?...a few readings of them lead in that direction... Aparalgon wakes at the last minute...he represents the sleeper in all of us, willing to wake up and see things as they really are...
A metaphysical approach to psycological work...........2000-03-28
Wow!! This book really takes Regression to another level...
The Regression work itself is a vehicle for an energy to work with you so that deeply embedded psychological imprints and patterns can be discharged at the very source of when they began. The result is de-conditioning bad habits, behavioural patterns and reactions.
The case studies outlined in the book illustrate clearly what the process of ISIS - Inner Space Interactive Sourcing, can reveal to people.
I have worked with the ISIS technique that is outlined in the book with the professionals from the Clairvision School, and it is definitely the most powerful work on self-development that I have ever done. I have seen in myself emotional patterns that have been nagging at me for my whole life as well as physical health problems, just fade away.
A must read for those doing serious meditation or self-development work...
