1 out of 5 stars What Jerks! All of them!.......2007-05-20

I originally read this book because it was written by a very prolific and popular author, and I've been trying to find some new reading material. I bought the "Bride" trilogy used, all at once, so I guess I felt obligated to read it. I really should have stopped halfway through this one and left it at that. I regret the time and energy spent on these. I think I can spare everyone the synopsis, as it's been covered, but I had to throw my opinion into the ring after seeing how many stars this got!

First, I have no idea why this would be considered a "romance". There's very little of anything remotely resembling romance in this book. Douglas, who I will admit has reason to be angry - at least at first - is, at best, verbally abusive. He talks to Alex in a despicable manner. She, of course, is convinced that she LOOOOOOOVES him (even though she hadn't seen him in 3 years and she was only 15 when they last met). There's no indication of WHY she would love him, just that she does. When she tries to "seduce" him, he treats her like trash, and he's repeatedly threatening to beat her. But we're supposed to think that's okay, because he really wouldn't do it? Uh, no.

Secondly, his mother treats her horribly, and he never says a word or stands up for her, even when he decides he loves her, too. He is the head of the family, controls the money and the estate, threatens to move his mother to the dowager house, but still just lets her run ragged over an 18 year old girl. Very manly.

Thirdly... Well, the sex. Sheesh. It's not sensual, it's not romantic, it's nearly violent, and it involves crying, at least the first time. I can only guess that this author lost her virginity in an exceptionally painful and unpleasant way, because she certainly presents it as such. But at least he doesn't seem to rape her in this book, as the other characters do in the sequels.

Fourthly, the finale is implausible, if not downright impossible. The miscarriage would make sense except for Alex's reaction/recovery, not to mention Douglas' complete disregard for it. And the "punishment" at the end for the "real" villain in all of this is pretty darn tame, considering. All in all, it was unbelievable and poorly conceived.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-03-19

Witty, humorous dialog and a great storyline. I loved the characters so much in this book that I went back online and got ALLL of the Sherbrooke stories... hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars The Sherbrooke Bride.......2007-03-09

This is the first Coulter book I read, and I was hooked.
The action is fast. The characters keep you wanting to read more.
From this book I went on to read the stories of all the Sherbrooke men.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-01-11

This was the first time I bought a cd. It was pretty good. I have read the book a thousand times and the cd was just like reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Stands up and proclaimes, "Well, I liked it!".......2006-10-26

I'll say it loudly and proudly, I like this series. But I'll tell you what I don't like...

I don't like reviewers who give poor ratings to ALL the books in the series. For those who do, I ask this question: if you didn't like the first book, or the second, or the third, etc., etc., why do you keep reading the series? And for those that say "I'm gonna finish this book because I paid for it", well that I understand, because I've been in that boat myself. But you know what I didn't do? I didn't keep buying the books and complaining how much I didn't like them! I said, "Well, that sucked.", donated the book to the library, and moved on.
Also, although I understand a reviewer's right to voice their opinion (aren't I doing it myself?), let's not take potshots at the author. You don't like the book? Fine, give it a poor review and move on. But, while your undercutting Ms. Coulter (and I know not everyone is) consider this. Quite a few reviewers mentioned liking her FBI series. And Lyon's Gate includes characters from another series. Plus the Sherbrooke's, that's at least three series she's managed. She must be doing something right to have that sort of output.

Now, if you don't agree with me, fine, that's your choice, and I respect that. If I've violated some sort of Amazon rule with this review, or if you know of a better place for it, let me know. But please, let's do it like mature, resonable people. After all, we're all biblophiles here. And I hope we're all working together to put out smart, informed reviews to help the public, and each other, find the best books, and other products out there.

Thank you.

Book Description

Dear Reader:

The Sherbrooke family saga continues with James and Jason Sherbrooke, identical male twins who look exactly like their beautiful Aunt Melissande, and not at all like their father, the earl, which riles him no end.

James, twenty-eight minutes older than his brother, is the heir. He is solid, is James. He's a student of astronomy, rides like a centaur, and, unlike his brother, Jason, enjoys learning the ropes of managing his father's estates. He no longer sows excessive wild oats, as his neighbor, Corrie Tybourne Barrett, a brat he's known since she was three-years-old, looks forward to doing since she turned eighteen. When she nearly shoves him off a cliff, sneering all the while, James hauls off and spanks her.

A promising start. Then, unfortunately, the earl, Douglas Sherbrooke, is shot at. This leads to Georges Cadoudal, a Frenchman in the employ of the English war ministry with whom Douglas had dealings with some years before. But Cadoudal died in 1815, fifteen years before. Were there children who might want revenge against Douglas? But the question is why: Georges and Douglas parted friends, at least Douglas believed that they had.

Adventures compound; Corrie hurls herself into the thick of things. As for Jason, not quite a half an hour younger, he loves horses, wants to start a stud farm, still sows more oats than a man should be allowed, but finally meets a girl who stops him in his tracks. And then what happens?

You will have to listen to the book to find out. I hope you enjoy yourself. The characters are rich, colorful, and a hoot to boot. The mystery will confound you.

Do let me know what you think. Write me at P.O. Box 17, Mill Valley, CA., 94942 or email me at readmoi@aol.com. Keep an eye on my web site at www.CatherineCoulter.com.

I've only listened through the 3rd CD and I can't seem to get into the story. I don't know yet if its the story line or Ms. Flosnik's grating voice. But her voice interpretation for James, Jason and Douglas (and all the men) make them sound ridiculous. Ms. Flosnik (as well as all female readers) should not try to sound like men -- just read it straight. I think I'd rather read this one. I don't recommend the sound recording.

I read the whole book waiting for it to get good. Too many storylines for such a short book. If Ms. Coulter wanted this to be an good book she would have been better off spending more time developing the relationships between the characters. Corrie is the only character that was adequately developed (note adequately development is just that merely adequately) You dont get the opportunity to feel the stresses and the emotions b/c you dont really understand the characters. Granted this is a mere romance novel and one shouldnt expect much. But this is definitly the worst book I've ever read. I felt more emotion out of the stoic Edward Wilson in the Movie "The Good Shepard" Fortunately "Jason" was developed a little more towards the end to allow "Lyons Gate" to be a potentially decent Romance nove. I'm definitly going to go read the reviews on it first before I waste my time, though.

The Sherbrooke Twins
by Catherine Coulter

Reviewer: Pamela Ackerson, author of Home of the Braves trilogy

I never thought I would see the day when I read a book by Catherine Coulter and was disappointed. The first 20 or so pages was great and then the book draaaaaaagggged. I almost didn't bother to finish reading it. In my head I kept thinking, this is Catherine Coulter it has to get better than this. So I read on and fought my way through the center of the book and zing! About three-quarters of the way through the book, There she was! I knew Ms. Coulter would show her head and writing expertise! The last quarter of the book, woohoo. That's what I was expecting. A great read. Was it worth reading through the slow part of the book? Yeup.

The Sherbrooke twins, James and Jason, are the sons of Douglas and Alexandra from The Sherbrook Bride. James is attracted unbelievably to the annoying girl next door and he doesn't quite know how to handle her growing up. When she is compromised by spending the night taking care of an ill James, they have to marry. He is secretly delighted. The wedding night verges on being a comedy. Jason, has a bit of a romance in this story as well, but his story will come later. These twins are hot.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry excuse for a Sherbrooke Book.......2005-05-31

This book was so boring. I was very, very disappointed. The relationship between the twin (what's his name) and Corrie seemed almost incestuous. She was more like a kid sister to them. I never, ever saw the relationship and the passion grow or ignite between these two. Waste of time. Catherine Coulter played her readers with this mess. She could have had more respect for us than to put this book out there.

3 out of 5 stars The Sherbroooke Bride its not.......2005-02-20

"The Sherbrooke Twins" is the lastest in the "Bride Series." Jason and James Sherbrooke are young men of London and joining them this season is Corrie Tybourne-Barrett a neighbor of the twins. But the Sherbooke family have problems, serveral attempts have been made on Douglas Sherbrooke's life and it looks like man from the family's past is behind it.
I loved earlier books in the "Bride Series" but the "The Sherbrooke Twins" did very little for me. Too me, it seem to me that Ms. Coulter had little interest in turning out a decent book. I loved earlier regency books by the author, but "The Sherbooke Twins" did very little for me.

All he wanted was enough whiskey to forget...

Ravaged by grief after a car crash took his cherished wife and unborn child, Chase Tyler had abandoned his family business. He'd hit the rodeo circuit and the bars with equal disregard for his life, unwilling to face his pain and move on—until a bad-tempered bull and a lady from the past forced him to....

All she wanted was his love...

Marcie Johns had known Chase all her life, had been driving the car when it crashed and his wife was killed. She still wondered if Chase blamed her for his loss. But she was willing to gamble her pride and happiness to give the man she'd adored since childhood something to live for. When she offered Chase a brazen proposition to save his company, he was shocked by her plan—and he hated himself for being tempted by the fire smoldering in her gorgeous eyes! Could a once-shy bookworm seduce the rugged cowboy of her dreams into letting her love heal his heart?

4 out of 5 stars Another great book in this series..........2007-06-01

Chase is book #2 in this 3 book series. Book #1, Lucky, was a great start to this series & I'm happy to say that I enjoyed Chase's story just as well if not better than Lucky's.

Another reviewer stated that Marcie barely knew Chase when she proposed but the fact is they'd been friends since they were 5. They hadn't been close over the past several years but they were far from strangers.

I was very happy to be reunited with the rest of Chase's family. This is a great little community & you really feel that you know them. Very enjoyable & I highly recommend this 3 book series.

                3 out of 5 stars A second chance at love - 3.5 stars.......2006-08-06

Chase Tyler's whole world collapsed the day he lost Tanya and their unborn child. He dealt with his grief by drinking, womanizing and rodeo riding. For two years, he did nothing but these in order to numb the pain that was brought on by that tragic day.

Marcie Johns has secretly adored Chase Tyler since they were in kindergarten. But as the class nerd, she knew she didn't have a chance of ever ensnaring the hottest boy in her class. So she kept her feelings hidden and focused instead on using her brains to succeed in the business world. Many years later and she sees Chase finally settle down in marital bliss. They meet once again when his wife, Tanya, retains Marcie as their realtor. Then tragedy strikes and claims Tanya and her baby. Seeing what their death does to Chase, she vows to do everything to give the man she loves something to live for.

When I read the first book, TEXAS! LUCKY, I knew that Chase and Tanya's relationship would never last since Chase's story is the second novel. Seeing their adoration and absolute love for each other, I dreaded to see how it would end. Despite my curiosity, I avoided reading the back cover of the second book and so I was really saddened when I read of the car crash. As I started reading this novel, I couldn't help but think back on how wonderful Chase and Tanya were. I knew that Marcie would be in for a tough fight having to compete with the memory of such a wonderful woman who meant the whole world to Chase. But Marcie is a fighter as seen in the way she never gave up on Chase. And it was good when she finally heals him and makes him see that he still has a reason to live.

TEXAS! CHASE is a good instalment to the TEXAS! trilogy. It was great seeing the Tyler family once again, including the newest addition (Lucky and Devon's daughter). And I really can't wait to start on Sage's story. I'd love to see the kind of man that can handle her!

                5 out of 5 stars A Great Romance Book.......2006-07-27

Some of these reviewers are crazy. This book was great. It was by far the best out of the trilogy. If you like Sandra's more recent books.(Which are mostly thrillers, with a touch of romance) you might not like this one, because it is romance all the way. When I think back to the Best of Sandra Brown. I think Sunset Embrace, Another Dawn, Slow Heat in Heaven, and TEXAS:CHASE!!!

4 out of 5 stars I really love this trilogy!!! Must read for any Brown fan!.......2005-08-25

Wow! This is a fantastic series of stories about the 3 Tyler siblings. And this is the second story in the series.

Chase Tyler is completely out of his mind after the death of his beautiful pregnant wife. He pretty much loses it and goes back into bull riding and drinking way too much. That's when Marcie finds him. Marcie just happens to be the one who was driving the car that his wife died in and has been in love with chase herself since grade school. Marcie manages to clean him up and to save his family business, marry him. The tension between them was hard to read at times because you knew they really wanted eac other and just wouldn't admit it!

This is a fantastic trilogy and I am not usually a "re-reader", but I am keeping this one to read again!

4 out of 5 stars Chase on the Run.......2005-05-14

Chase Tyler was so overcome with grief when his wife and unborn baby were killed in a car accident that he ran. He ran away from the family business and his memories and became a rodeo man. Riding bulls and drinking until he couldn't feel anymore was the only way he could survive until he was injured and a lady from his past came back into his life. Marcie Johns had known Chase since they were kids and was driving the car when it killed his wife. She had always loved him, but now he needed her. He needed her to make him stop running and be a man again. She made him an offer that would save the family business and was a gamble with her heart.

The story is good, even if a little predictable. Sandra Brown seems to be afraid to break out of the traditional romance mold, even though she keeps crossing the line, and then jumping back within the boundaries. You know the next in the series will be even better!

Her compassion and deep respect for cows makes them come alive as individuals, each worthy of consideration and care. In her book, Close Encounters of the Bovine, Rosalie tells her tales of caring for these misunderstood and often underestimated creatures, from delivering newborns to treating the sick and injured.

                5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-04-30

One gets the idea that Dr. Cooper-Chase feels truly blessed and humbled to have been "chosen" for her profession as a veterinarian and that she has been privileged to witness the interaction between man and beast and the gifts that each has to offer the other. Her observation and explanation of procedures gives the reader a feeling of being at her side as she tends to the needs of her very fortunate patients. Told with lots of wit and sometimes bluntness, you feel her tenderness, outrage and diplomacy as she handles situations concerning her bovine patients and their owners. It's a wonderful collection of life's lessons through an animal lover's eyes. Looking forward to reading about her encounters with the feline and the canine!

                  Book Description

The demise of the Confederacy left a legacy of legal arrangements that raised fundamental and vexing questions regarding the legal rights and status of former slaves and the status of former Confederate states. As Harold Hyman shows, few individuals had greater impact on resolving these difficult questions than Salmon P. Chase, chief justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1865 to 1873.

Hyman argues that in two cases--In Re Turner (1867) and Texas v. White (1869)--Chase combined his abolitionist philosophy with an activist jurisprudence to help dismantle once and for all the deposed machineries of slavery and the Confederacy. In these cases, Chase sought to consolidate the gains of the Civil War era, while demonstrating that the war had both preserved the precious core characteristics of the federal union of states and fundamentally improved the nature of both private and public law.

In Re Turner was a private law case decided at the federal circuit level. It involved a black woman's claim that she, a recent slave, was being held in involuntary servitude. Elizabeth Turner's mother had apprenticed Elizabeth to their former master, who had not abided by his contractual obligations to provide Elizabeth with training and compensation, substantively keeping her in slavery. Chase's decision, which relied upon due process and equal protection implications in the thirteenth amendment and 1866 Civil Rights Act, confirmed the rights of emancipated slaves to bargain and contract with employers on a parity with white workers.

Texas v. White was a public law case decided in the Supreme Court. It revolved around the issue of whether the holders of U.S. bonds seized and sold by the Confederate state of Texas could demand payment after the war from that state's newly reconstructed government. In effect, Chase and his associate justices were asked to determine the legality of actions committed by all former Confederate states and, thus, to define what constituted a state. Chase's opinion reaffirmed the Union's permanence, and that of the constituent states in the federal union, and the states' duty to respect the legal rights and obligations of all citizens because states were people as well as acreages and institutions.

Hyman's exemplary analysis of these cases reveals how their political, legal, and constitutional aspects were so inextricably interwoven. They secured for Chase a rostrum for both moral and legal reform from which he asserted his strong views on the fundamental rights of individuals and states in an era of sporadically increasing federal power. Hyman's study provides a much-needed reevaluation of those cases both in the context of Chase's life and in terms of their mark on history.

This book is part of the Landmark Law Cases and American Society series.

Prior to his contact with this gang, Norfleet had been a man of peace, with kindest feeling toward all humanity and malice toward none. This is a wonderful adventure which will keep the reader enthralled.

This book is a great way to flashback to the early mid-twenties thirties. You can see all the characters, just like a great old movie, they each have their own little personality qwerk. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a mystery or the ole gangster era. I found this book because I am related to this man. My father remembers him as being "Bigger than Life", he had a big following and they just love him in Texas - wonder why?

The book is weird. I got it, mainly because of the namesake. And he is not exactly a professional writer. But as I began, I felt urged to keep reading. And knowing it really happened gave it an extra nudge. I liked it a great deal, and strongly recommend it.
