5 out of 5 stars Serious book in an easy reading form .......2007-02-22

This author has a talent to show emotion and practical situations every person experience in his life in a form of sphere where his heroes aren't two dimensions plain neither boring. Each quality or circumstances is giving in a perspective that most people can see themselfs from all angles that gives reader the opportunity to criticize himself and see himself as both main characters of this book at the same time. I think this is a best approach for reader who wants to find out some of his weakness and strength in personal and social behavior.

4 out of 5 stars A study of love.......2006-05-10

In the first part of his novel, Mr de Botton introduces his main character, Alice, and discusses the notion of reality with the help of such philosophers as Heraclitus, Plato, Hegel or Shopenhauer and poses the question, following Oscar Wilde, whether art imitates life or life that imitates art. We may for instance like Paris more than London because we know the former city through the eyes of painters like Manet, Degas or Pissaro or through films by Truffaut or Godard. The author then discusses the difference between imitative and autonomous desire and then engages in the argument that Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary is the first novel (published in 1856) which links the two activities of sex and shopping which are psychologically intertwined.
Then Alice meets Eric at a party and this gives the author the opportunity to write about love, indeterminacy, the idealisation of the lover, the value systems in a love relationship or the power in love. Do we love the partner's money, body, achievements, weaknesses or anxieties? Is thinking problem-induced or problem-inducing? How does the cultural baggage of infancy and youth, of relations and traditions influence one's relationship with a partner?
This book is an original hybrid, part novel, part philosophical reverie which is not without charm. Some readers have complained that Alain de Botton all too often states the obvious and it is true that his novel does not present any revelations but it is enjoyable to read nevertheless.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book.......2005-06-03

I have read many of this author's books, and while the others are quite good in their own sense, I found myself unable to put this down, good from the minute I started reading it.
It starts by explaining some of the emotional and historical background of the main character, a woman who finds herself unable to fill the void of not been involved with someone and at the same moment is closed minded regarding prospects and hope in general.
The book thens start to get very interesting as the character meets a charming man, who is opposite to her in a lot of regards. With metaphors and thoughts surrounding the story as it is told. This book is marvelous in the way it is able to connect on many levels on the different themes and events that unfold in the relationship. It seems to be able to tell in words and coherent though, the problems presented in relationships based on the struggle for love. I fully enjoyed many of his others books, and this one was the first "love" book that I read of his, being that he has primarily three books dealing solely with relationships.
I recommend this book to anyone who ever loved or doubted love, but wants to read about it in a interesting and challenging context, instead of the usual "they do this" and "they do that," material that is often the writing style of this subject matter. Great book overall and recommended to any and every intelligent person that has been in love or seeks an interesting outlook on how love relates to many of our challenges and hopes as human beings.

5 out of 5 stars Art or Life?.......2004-11-30

Nowhere on the cover or copyright page of this book does the publisher classify it as a novel...or as a work of philosophy, for that matter. I can't help thinking that this playful insouciance was probably at the insistance of the author. Alain de Botton has twice previously used a loose novelistic form to help readers engage with centuries-old philosophical ideas and dilemmas. His first, ON LOVE (US title), was nicely conceived and tightly executed; the second, KISS & TELL, had a darker, smarmier aspect since it included photographs of its young female subject and I couldn't shake the sense that I was peeking into someone dirty clothes basket without her consent.

THE ROMANTIC MOVEMENT is the most loosely assembled of the three novels (if, in fact, it is a novel). It follows a young woman's unexpected and unplanned journey into a romantic relationship (not her first) with a banker a few years her senior. Her name is Alice and the author clearly intends the reader to make connections to Lewis Carroll's young "adventurer." Secondary characters are added and dropped as needed and the novel, were it not so unique and fun, might be deemed a failure if judged by conventional standards.

The arc of the story follows the predictable flow of the young couple's relationship--courtship, sexual consumation, mutual testing, failed communications, unexpressed expectations, outside flirtations, and eventual devolution. Nothing unusual or dramatic here. What is riveting is the way Botton is able to use philosophy to examine these very ordinary experiences. I think readers will have no trouble identifying with most of the thought processes recounted here and attributed to one of the two main characters. The novel (again, if it is a novel) is loaded with "Ah-ha" moments.

A rundown of some of the chapter titles will give you a sense of the range of issues Botton tackles: "Reality," "Art and Life," "Story Envy," "In Love with Love," "Sex, Shopping, and the Novel," "Predictability," "Power and 007," "Religious Relationships," "Diving, Rousseau and Thinking Too Much," "Provincialism," "Passing the Guilt," and "Who Makes the Effort?" My favorite of his observations is from the chapter "Jollyism": "Gossip is an exercise in trust: a person feels free to gossip when they feel they have someone to understand their objections. It is a colluding activity; two people leave the main group and open their parcel of gossip material" (p. 205). Botton is happy to be our gossip partner and has many such parcels to open with us. If you haven't colluded with Botton already, THE ROMANTIC MOVEMENT is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Love, sex and shopping.......2004-10-20

Alain de Botton came up with some intriguing literary twists in his first book, "On Love," but the handling of literature and philosophy didn't quite match its goals. But de Botton surpasses it with his sophomore effort "The Romantic Movement," an intricate study of love, sex, relationship, psychology and literature.

Eric is older, more chic, richer and a seasoned professional. Alice begins to be attracted to him immediately, and equally quickly they become lovers. In the first flush of the relationship, they seem to adore and treasure one another. But soon cracks begin to form in the relationship, unbalancing Alice.

Eric seems to take her for granted, and has a tendency to attack people who are sensitive, crippled, weak, physically unattractive, etc. Alice, who clearly suffers from self-esteem problems, often blames herself for Eric's inattentiveness and temper tantrums, until she begins to see that his flaws are a part of him.

De Botton name-drops everyone from Descartes to Rousseau in this book, but seems more comfortable than he did in "On Love." It's essentially the same story -- boy meets girl, boy and girl get into relationship, personalities clash, someone breaks it off, cycle begins anew. But here de Botton polishes out the story's progression, and adds a slightly more upbeat ending.

His twining of philosophy and psychology with fiction is a lot more assured this time around. Rather than interrupting the story with long sprawls of intellectual pondering, he weaves them into the story. And he uses more of his wry sense of humor, such as the comment that Madame Bovary essentially killed herself because she shopped too much. (Flaubert plays a big part in his analysis of love, such as the religious-love theory)

Alice can be a bit annoying throughout most of the book -- she's sweet and loving, but rather clueless. It's satisfying to see her snap out of it, and realize why her relationship won't work. Eric comes across as a jerk, but de Botton does give him good qualities as well. And Philip comes across as being Alice's potential One And Only.

Take the same old story, and mix in shopping, sex and philosophy, and you have "The Romantic Movement." Alain de Botton improves on his first book with this strangely touching, wryly intellectual story.

Book Description

At the center of Home Again is Madelaine, a brilliant cardiologist, a loving mother, a tender friend, a woman full of self-doubt. It is the story of her daughter, Lina, a confused and angry rebel and of the two very different men Madelaine loves: Francis, a priest searching for his faith, and Angel, a talented, but cynical man. When tragedy brings them together again, they must learn to forgive the betrayals of the past and find the courage to love again. Touching and inspiring, it is also a story of modern-day miracles, medical, and, perhaps, those not of this world.

5 out of 5 stars Life changes for everyone....even the famous........2007-07-29

Madeline Hilyard is a great cardiologist who is a single parent to her daughter Lina, whom is very very unhappy. Her mother never has time for her as she works at the hospital hours on end. It has always been this way Lina's whole life, and she often feels neglected-and not only that, her mother would never tell her who her father was. And as it is coming up to Lina's 16th birthday, she is going to pry the answers out of her mother no matter what it takes. One thing that is Lina's rock, and a fatherly figure to her is Francis DeMarco, of whom is a priest. He has always been a friend to Madeline over the years since Lina was a brand new baby, and they both adore him.

Francis has a brother, Angel DeMarco who is just the opposite. Angel is a big star, and at one time he and Madeline were lovers. When Angel finally collapses with another bad heart attack, he lands in the hospital where Madeline practices. She ends up on the case as his doctor, and finds out that Angel needs a heart transplant, and soon, before he dies. But he is not an easy patient, and the battle of the wills is on between him and her. Madeline has to make him cooperate if he is to receive a new heart, otherwise it won't happen.

When a tragedy takes place in the story, a donor match is found for Angel. This part is kind of predictable in some ways, but the ending remains vague for a long time.

I enjoyed the book very well and found it a worthwhile read. Madeline and Lina have a long way to go if they are to find peace with pne another, and her father may be closer than she ever knew.

1 out of 5 stars Offensive to Catholics.......2006-10-02

From the back cover:

Dear Reader:

At this magical time of year, I am always reminded of the fragile threads that bind our lives and the strength that comes from caring. It's the season when we hold our loved ones a little closer and say "I love you" just a bit more often. In celebration of the holiday spirit, I am proud to give you the gift of this novel.

At the center of HOME AGAIN is Madelaine, a brilliant cardiologist, a loving mother, a tender friend, a woman who is full of self-doubt...It is the story of her daughter, Lina, a confused and angry rebel...and of the two very different men Madelaine loves: Francis, a priest searching for his faith, and Angel, a talented but cynical man. When tragedy suddenly brings them all together they must learn to forgive the betrayals of the past and find the courage to love again.

Of all the boks I've written, none has touched me as deeply as this one. I hope it makes you remember that even in this crazy, chaotic world, miracles really do exist. Happy holidays!

And my review:

After being disapointed time and again by Kristin Hannah's books (they always had promise, but poor execution), I'd promised myself I wouldn't buy anymore. But when I realized that HOME AGAIN was a Christmas romance, well...let's just say I'm a sucker for Christmas romances and broke down.

And I wish I hadn't. Though this seemed like it had an interesting set of converging plotlines of people coming to terms with things, the whole "a priest is secretly in love" just turned me off. Not that I hate all forbidden love stories, but when he kisses the heroine, I was totally grossed out. I am a devout Catholic, and this is against everything I believe in. I'm sure other Catholics will find it as offensive as I do. (That's the reasons why I never read THE THORN BIRDS either!)

Now, some authors can handle this plotline with the proper delicacy it requires. Lavryle Spencer did it in THEN CAME HEAVEN, when a nun falls in love with a widower. The differences was the SHE NEVER ACTED ON IT UNTIL SHE'D RECEIVED A DISPENSATION FROM HER VOWS! She did not carry on with him while she was still a nun. That's why that book was enjoyable, while HOME AGAIN is just offensive. If Francis (the priest) was in love with a woman, then HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BECOME A PRIEST IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!! If he didn't realize it until after, then he should live without her, or get a dispensation so that he's not a priest anymore. You can't have both. (It's like people who get married, and then have an affair because they actually love someone else. As if being in love with someone else makes cheating okay.)

Yeah, I know that a lot of people will probably razz me for this review, but I know that there are other Catholics out there who feel just as strongly about this as I do. This kind of thing is not romantic; it's disgusting and offensive.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, enjoyable, read; Worth all 5 stars.......2006-08-08

This is one I read before I was leaving my reviews on Amazon. Now I plan to make sure I leave a review for all I read. I hope my reviews are helpful and beneficial with your book selections. I'm in the process of leaving reviews for all the books I gave a 5 star rating. Happy reading.

5 out of 5 stars A love story worth your time.......2006-06-10

This is the first Kristin Hannah novel I have read and after finishing it I am definetly a new fan of hers. The book is not just about two people falling in love, it is also about families and what it's like to raise a teenage girl in this day and age. From Hollywood to heart transplants this novel has a little bit of everything and I would recommend it to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable easy read.......2006-05-13

This is the first book I have read by Kristin Hannah, and I enjoyed it enough to order two others. I enjoyed the storyline of the mom and rebellious teenage daughter, and I felt the storyline with the two brothers and the donated heart was very touching. Kristin could have left out the dead brother ghost action, I didn't feel it was necessary. The book was easy to read, not the best that I have read, but still very enjoyable.

Inspired by the events of his own life, the Essence bestselling author of B-More Careful and Bad Girlz presents a vivid, unflinching novel about a young man's coming of age in the city streets.

Never Go Home Again is the story of Corey Dixon, a young man whose father tries as best he can to steer him away from the lure of the streets. And yet, like so many others in his neighborhood, Corey finds the lucrative drug trade too tempting to resist. While he makes fast money for a while, ultimately Corey must pay the price for his choice of his profession: his freedom. By the age of sixteen, Corey is sentenced to prison.

Incarcerated at Riker's Island, Corey lives through experiences that threaten to destroy his body, his mind, and his spirit. Still, in the midst of his horrific imprisonment, he discovers inner strength and -- against unimaginable odds -- manages to survive. Corey makes a new kind of family for himself in jail, including a teacher who encourages him to "never go home again." i think this a good book but i have read books from his that blew me a way because it was deep and real. This is the street life but not at its best way of putting it, i alway think that the ending could have been better then it was also. i would tell people to read this book, but read his others 1st. (B-More Careful, and Concrete Jungle)

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 for Holmes.......2006-01-16

I'm glad that most of you gave this book 4 and 5 stars; but to me, I found that this book was too long and too drawn out to my liking. Yes, "B-More Careful" has over 300 pages, but I was totally clued to that book. As for this book, I didn't feel the magic of Shannon Holmes pen in this book. I also got a little bit confused about Corey's age from the time he was introduced to the book up to the end. I know Shannon Holmes is trying to keep it street as much as possible, but for me, I feel that this book and "Bad Girlz" were slack ups since "B-More Careful" was totally successful. I do agree that this book should be used as summer reading for most urban high schools and college social classes. But you can be the overall judge of this book if you purchase it or rent it from your libary. Another warning get PAPERBACK, hardbook bites! LOL!

4 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2005-10-06

Never Go Home Again is a book about life in the streets and the consequences that sixteen year old, Corey, goes through. Even though Corey is raised with his two parents and knows what's wrong and right, he decides to enter the drug dealing game to earn some money. By doing so, he is faced into being incarcerated and regretting everything he did. I think Shannon Holmes did a really good job in describing everything that Corey has to go through and describing how life is in the streets.

3 out of 5 stars Just Ok.......2005-10-05

This story about Cory Dixon, who is incarcerated as a young teen. Cory is given some good advice while in prison, but fails to follow it when he gets out. Our young male teens should take a read they may learn something from it. I was expecting something a little different from Shannon as I have enjoyed his previous books.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Frightening talent.......2006-07-05

Capturing the readers attention by continuously drawing us back; I felt much like I did when I first read Conrad's LORD JIM. The author carries us into lives we may have never read; disturbing, rewarding and disturbing again. When I encountered the sexual violent scene I had to get up and walk away. As a vet I read through the Vietnam memories in a cathartic nod; but when the sexual violence was crammed into my face I put the book down. I no longer cared about the book's ending.

5 out of 5 stars wow........2005-09-03

This book was amazing. I will never forget this book, this book has seriously contributed to me intellectually, emotionally, and has added to my world scope and view. As a puerto rican-american, I truly connected with the characters in this novel, and learned intensively from Yunqué's description of the loisaida y los nuyorriqueños in general. I've never read a book with such intensely discoursed characters and with such a widespread blanket of social, philosophical, and emotional depth contained in one book. The descriptions here and other reviews are more than enough to understand what the novel is about but I just wanted to add how inspiring this book was for me. There have been very very few books out there that have inspired real emotions in me, and this was one of them...If you felt true paranoia and fear after reading 1984, you'll feel true understanding and heartache after reading this novel. it's over 600 pages, but i highly recommend this to anyone, and for any other literary nuyoricans out there, this book will be especially touching.

edit: I went back and read some more reviews, and I have to agree that there are some parts that are long and extensive and not directly related to the main plot, but I never found the book boring. I feel that these offshoots just served to widen the scope of the book...for me, as a young reader, it's refreshing to read a book where not everything has a direct importance to the main plot yet has value and interest.

5 out of 5 stars Look for other works by this gifted author............2004-06-18

The writer of the Publisher's Weekly review should be more thorough in their research before writing reviews. This is not Sr. Vega Yunque's "debut" novel. He has written and published, I believe at least two novels and at least one collection of stories and has published widely in journals/magazines. The man writes superbly and I was thrilled to finally have his beautiful book in print, after hearing so much about it. I'm furious with his publishers for the lack of promotion. Readings from this novel, which must have the longest title in publishing history, are quite special with actual jazz accompanyment. I believe that the publisher missed the boat when they failed to send the author out on a major book tour. It should be recognized, rewarded and READ.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Book and whatnot.......2004-06-12

When I heard that this author had spent sixteen years writing an epic novel having to do with jazz music, I said, "Here we go again," having just read the two other 600-page Great American Novels published in 2003 -- those of Messrs. Lethem and Powers-- which somehow dealt with ethnic identity and music. And the sleeper, Vincent O. Carter's epic of growing up in Depression-era Kansas City, while not specifically about music, is certainly musical in its prose. So I had to read this book and didn't care what it was called, Concerto for Horn & Hardart or John Goldfarb, Please Come Home.

I have to disagree with the reviewer who said this novel doesn't have the 'sensitivity to music' of Time of Our Singing (undoubtedly a fine book in many ways), and I think one basis for comparison is both authors' interpretations of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez and its jazz adaptation by Miles Davis and Gil Evans. I think that Mr. Vega Yunqué gets it exactly right in Garlande's dialogue with Wyndell (Joseph Strom take note).

One thing I really loved were the histories of the characters, especially the rural Southern ones like Pop Butterworth, Buck Sanderson, Lurleen, et al., and I also like the author's sense of family and the interrelatedness of some of the characters in terms of ethnicity. And I think that shows in his view of music: he knows the lyrics to St. Thomas, he knows Phil's solos on Thelonious Monk at Town Hall, and someone I know even gets a word in: "Yeah!."

Walter Mosley not too long ago wrote a great blues novel set on E. 6th St. on the Lower East Side, but this one includes some of the landmarks and history of the neighborhood, the transit system, some of the literature, etc., that you probably have to have lived there to know about.

And finally, I loved all the information about New York Puerto Rican culture, the PR sense of self-identity, and especially the humor. Another great American cross-cultural irony is that Vidamía learns more about that culture by hanging out with her white half sister than from her Puerto Rican mother and stepfather. I liked Elsa because she's smart and she grows over the course of the novel.

A lot to recommend about this fine book.

2 out of 5 stars A Journey I Wish I Hadn't Taken.......2004-05-28

A "Symphonic Novel"? Perhaps, if the symphony had been composed by PDQ Bach. About the only thing I'll remember about this book is its title. It is inconsistent in the quality of its prose. At times, it is almost poetic and spellbinding. At other times, however, it's very tedious and somewhat pompous and lecturing in its tone. A little more editing could have eliminated about 200 pages of unnecessary detail and dialogue.

Usually, when I finish a book, I like to sit and savor the experience. When I got to the end of this tome, I breathed a sign of relief that it was over. Oh well, that's about 10 hours of my life I'll never get back.
