do not know what to call it.......2006-09-19
I do not know what to call this book , because it is a novel and also part of history; but not quite either of them, there are parts full of detailed art history and other very much a novel. My mind had to be switching constantly between "I am reading a novel" and "I am reading a history book" There are parts where I believe could have been blended better. Sometimes I got lost where I was going or where I was coming from.
A bit difficult to follow but at the end I could call it "interesting"
Excellent debut for series.......2005-08-03
Details sets this book apart. Although far from a magnum opus, Pears manages to flesh out three well thought out central characters in a short space of pages. Their quirks and flaws are what make them likable, and the story evolves nicely through various European cities. Solid history gives the story a backbone, and Pears is obviously at home in the art worlds infrastructure and personality types. An ironic plot twist to end the book was the cherry on top of this tasty book.
An affair to forget .......2004-08-26
This book was disappointing. Although the art history and forgery in today's world are interesting and well written, the book lacks romance, and the characters are rather flat. It could have been so much better if Mr. Pears had expanded the romantic relationship of Johnathan and Flavia. The writing style seems dry and bland.
The Raphael Affair.......2004-08-25
I actually read Pears' Art History Mysteries out of sequence. But I find each of them beguiling and a quick read. This introduces the key characters, Jonathan Argyll, a tweady English Art Dealer and Flavia di Stefano of the Rome Art Theft Squad. There are few more charming pairings in recent mystery literature.
I notice that many readers come to Pears via 'An Instance of the fingerpost' or his latest,'The Dream of Scipio' and are somewhat disappointed because of the lack of depth. I would suggest that like his countryman, Grahame Greene, Pears is fully capable of serious, thought-provoking novels; and yet harbors a great affection for genre novels - in this case mysteries.
Pears' erudite depiction of the intricacies of art forgery are delivered with the kind of delicious drollery that makes an afternoon disappear quickly and magically if you leave your misconceptions behind. This is good beach or airplane reading and you won't feel disgusted afterward.
Good Start to a Series.......2003-02-26
After reading "An Instance of a Fingerpost" I knew Pears was a very good writer, so I went for this first in a series. I was not disappointed.
There are three elements of this novel I found strong. First, the three main characters. They are likeable with endearing foibles. Argyll is a loveable bumbling genius type; Flavia the beautiful, smart, action person who isn't quite as smart as she thinks she is; and the General, the affable smarter-than-he-looks detail man. I look forward to joining them in future escapades.
Second, I found the mystery to be a good one. There were good twists and turns and the final twist was a dandy. There are no superheroes here which I think always enhances a mystery.
Third, the cultural aspect. I enjoy a novel, whether a mystery or otherwise, that resides in an area of knowledge obviously known to the author but different from my experiences. It is obvious that Mr. Pears knows art and the art world (including the criminal aspects). He uses this expertise to enhance the plot and add depth to it without "showing off" and making the reader feel like a dunce.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable mystery placed in the middle of the art world. I will continue on this series - joyfully.

Book Description
This book brings together thirteen experts in subnational politics to examine the effects on local and regional governments of the pessimistic perception that governments are limited in their problem-solving abilities. Contributors discuss the issue of popular participation in the political decision-making process, which has led to the creation of community action groups and local and regional organizations that foster economic development. They take a hard look at the nature of relationships with other levels of government and address the problems caused by a shrinking budget.

Your loved ones are still with you
The end of physical life does not have to mean the end of a day-to-day relationship with our loved ones in spirit. Gifted medium Patrick Mathews reveals that we don't have to let go of loved ones in spirit-in fact, they benefit as much from ongoing communication as we do!
When he was six years old, Patrick Mathews came face to face with the spirit of his deceased Uncle Edward. As an adult, Mathews serves as a vessel of hope for those who wish to communicate with their loved ones in spirit.
Never Say Goodbye will help you learn how to recognize spirit communication and establish an ongoing relationship with those in spirit. The stories Mathews tells of his life and the people he has helped are heartwarming, humorous, and compelling-from the dead husband who stood by his wife's side during her second wedding to the brazen spirit who flashed Mathews to get her point across. Mathews also provides answers to the questions he is most often asked about life in Heaven.

A Wonderful Book!.......2007-06-14
Never Say Goodbye is informative, encouraging and engagingly light-hearted. A must-read!
Never Say Goodbye by Patrick Matthews.......2007-03-09
This is a must for anyone who has a loved one on the other side. It it so uplifting and gives a person peace of mind. I have given it as a gift to friends who are in grief and it also helped them.
Thank you Patrick!.......2007-02-09
I checked out this book at the Library after hearing about Patrick's appearances on local TV and Radio shows. After reading it, I am purchasing a copy to keep, as I know I will read this book over and over.
I have read two other books on this subject and found this one easy to both read and understand. Patrick's gift is amazing to say the least. His accounts of readings for people all over the world would make even a skeptic think twice, and if you are open to this, like I am, his experiences will serve to convince you that communication with loved ones, once they leave this physical life, can be achieved. I spoke with Patrick on the radio this morning before writing the review, and I can tell you that the messages he brought to me were right on the mark...all of them. I'm a believer.
Excellent Reading.......2007-01-05
I read this book twice within the first week of receiving it - and it was great! Patrick is a wonderful and compassionate writer!
Good reading .......2006-11-11
I realy liked this book. It gave me a different propective towards what has happened to my love ones and gave me more insight in my life journey.

"'Never say goodbye,' he said softly...".......2007-02-20
Book Description: HER FAMILY HAD TO COME FIRST. To keep her small family together Isobel Barrington managed to make ends meet -- just! -- by doing private nursing jobs. Her mother had only a small pension and her younger brother had to be educated somehow. Isobel shouldn't have had time to fall in love with Dr. Thomas Winters, but she did. He wasn't likely to be interested in Isobel, when the lovely Ella Stokes was around, so she ought to try to forget him. Easier said than done!
Excerpt: "'You're too young.' ...'I'm twenty-five -- a sensible age, I should have thought.' ...'Women at any age are not sensible,' he observed bitterly. ...'That was the nursing agency,' he said shortly. 'They wanted to know if I was satisfied with you for the the job I had in mind, and when I said I'd expected someone older and more experienced they regretted that there was positively no one else on their books." He cast her an exasperated look. 'I intend to leave England in two days' time, and there's no opportunity of finding someone else in forty-eight hours...I shall have to take you.' ...'You won't regret it,' she assured him briskly. ..."
*****He wanted a nurse, preferably "a sensible, experienced nurse with a placid disposition." She wasn't at all the type of nurse he intended to take with him; he wanted her services only until such time as a suitable companion for his old nanny could be found. This doctor good-looking, rich, British doctor was not interested in developing a a relationship, especially a personal relationship, with the plain, hard-working, British nurse. A wonderful story any Neels fan is sure to enjoy.
Sweet Romance.......2006-05-16
Isobel Barrington comes from a small but loving family and works as a private nurse to supplement her mother's pension and help her younger brother through school. She is hired by Dr. Thomas Winters to help bring his old Nanny to England from Poland. Isobel is happy to take the job, the pay is good, Nanny is a delight, and she has a chance to do a little sightseeing. Isobel's content with her lot in life until she realizes that she's fallen in love with Thomas. She feels that she has no chance to win his heart, she's rather plain and he has rich beautiful girlfriend named Ella.
"Never Say Goodbye" is Betty Neel's at her best. She changes her usual plot a bit - Thomas is English, not Dutch - but otherwise she uses one of my favorite formulas in this book - poor, plain, but gentle girl from a nice family falls in love with a rich, handsome doctor. Neels throws in a beautiful but mean-hearted girlfriend for the doctor and a family crisis for Isobel as well. Nothing new here, but Betty Neels had a special gift of being able to turn a simple romance into a heartwarming love story. Although there is no doubt who will win Thomas's heart, readers will root for Isobel the whole way, hating Ella.
This is a good book to read when you wish to escape from the real world for a couple of hours.

Great Book!.......2007-10-01
This is a wonderful book to read to children to help them understand more when losing a loved one, friend or even a pet. My Children really enjoyed it.
Nice Book.......2006-08-02
This book may be useful in teaching a lesson or aiding in dealing with a death, someone moving away, having to move away, etc. Most children do not like to say goodbye and leave the ones they love so this book may be helpful in helping them understand. Many small children I have read this to reacted with an "AWW."

Sultry and satisfying read.......1997-12-10
Set in Granbury, Georgia, NEVER SAY GOODBYE is a well-crafted story of love lost. When Felicia and Brandon reunite, the sexual tension sizzles like high noon in downtown Georgia. Suzanne McMinn's enthusiastic style and strong voice blend to make for a sultry and satisfying read.
Poignant.......1997-12-07
Ms. McMinn has constructed a nicely told story of reunited lovers destined for each other. For a first novel, this one is exceptional. I highly recommend it for those who like small town romance on a grand scale.
