Book Description
The women of the Sparrow family have lived in New England for generations. Each is born in the month of March, and at the age of thirteen, each develops an unusual gift. Elinor can literally smell a lie. Her daughter, Jenny, can see people’s dreams as they’re dreaming them. Granddaughter Stella, newly a teen, has just developed the ability to see how other people will die. Ironically, it is their gifts that have kept Elinor and Jenny apart for the last twenty-five years. But as Stella struggles to cope with her disturbing clairvoyance, the unthinkable happens: One of her premonitions lands her father in jail, wrongly accused of homicide. The ordeal leads Stella to the grandmother she’s never met and to Cake House, the Sparrow ancestral home full of talismans and fraught with history. Now three generations of estranged Sparrow women must come together to turn Stella’s potential to ruin into a potential to redeem.

Beautiful story about mother daughter love/hate relationship.......2007-08-24
I loved this story. It was an easy read and kept your attention at all times. I love how this author incorporates magic into her stories. It takes you away from normal day to day life and adds just enough spice to make it almost believable. Definately a good book
There's magic everywhere.......2007-08-03
I just adore Alice Hoffman! This book isn't an all-time classic, but it's fabulous.
13 generations of Sparrow women, each born with a `gift'. Rebecca was the first one, who one day generations ago just showed up from the marsh. They did away with her as a witch. She couldn't feel pain and boys shot her with arrows. You can still see her on the arrowhead the Sparrow women enshrined in a glass case in the parlor.
This book is jam packed with magic and mystery packed: marsh, snapping turtles, lush green foliage, mist and rain, smells- ginger, and something rotten, verdancy. The descriptions become redundant, they seep into the reader's skin.
We meet the latest Sparrows. Jenny should have married Matthew Avery but chose his brother Will because she dreamed his dream. What do they say about the peril of the magic you conger coming back on you? Daughter Stella, rebels, and changes the family luck and entire dynamics. Hoffman can artfully write mystery like almost no other.
Good, but not great. . . .......2007-05-24
I loved the history of the Sparrow family and the in-depth descriptions of nature really helped set the scene, but I had a hard time getting into the book overall. In fact, I started it three times before I finally read it all the way through. It is a good story, but I had a hard time caring about the characters, especially Jenny.
Would I read it again? No. Would I recommend it? Maybe.
Magic in Real Life.......2007-04-05
The age of thirteen is a magical age for girls, especially those in the Sparrow family. Read about the power of premonition that comes to one girl on her 13th birthday.
the magic of our realities.......2006-12-17
I loved this book. I read a lot and haven't been so engaged in a novel in a long time. Alice Hoffman paints pictures of depth and beauty, in a way that seems natural and effortless...the mind just follows her down her winding paths. As she says herself, the characters come to a life of their own and name themselves. These were very real characters to me. The sublties of changes in our perceptions about ourselves and others as we grapple for understanding and connections in life were portrayed in a magically interwoven tale much like real life itself. This book helped me to see the magic hidden in my own 'real' life. I gave it to all my grown children. A story of family and the possibilites of change.

Book Description
Alice Hoffman’s most magical novel to date—three generations of extraordinary women are driven to unite in crisis and discover the rewards of reconciliation and love.
Women of the Sparrow family have unusual gifts. Elinor can detect falsehood. Her daughter, Jenny, can see people’s dreams when they sleep. Granddaughter Stella has a mental window on the future—a future that she might not want to see.
In The Probable Future this vivid and intriguing cast of characters confronts a haunting past—and a very current murder—against the evocative backdrop of small-town New England. By turns chilling and enchanting, The Probable Future chronicles the Sparrows’s legacy as young Stella struggles to cope with her disturbing clairvoyance. Her potential to ruin or redeem becomes unbearable when one of her premonitions puts her father in jail, wrongly accused of homicide. Yet this ordeal also leads Stella to the grandmother she was forbidden to meet and to a historic family home full of talismans from her ancestors.
Poignant, arresting, unsettling, The Probable Future showcases the lavish literary gifts that have made Alice Hoffman one of America’s most treasured writers.
Customer Reviews:
Heartbreakingly Beautiful.......2006-07-24
This is a book about living, loving, growing up, dying, and all the stages between. It is the most insightful book on death and letting go that I have ever read. I cried at least three times, and having read thousands of books, I can truthfully say that this has happened only a hand full of times. I would highly recommend it to anyone experiencing the loss of someone close. There were seven deaths in my family in the past 18 months, and this small, sweet book soothed my soul.
Probable Dud.......2006-07-21
Alice Hoffman's "The Probable Future" begins with mystery, history and magical realism that seamlessly blends with the present times of the current three generations of Sparrow women: Elinor, Jenny and Stella. Rebecca Sparrow, the matriarch of this line of gifted women, had the gift of not feeling pain, which led to her drowning by the small town of Unity, Massachusetts; this was the time when things out of the ordinary were considered from the devil or aligned with witchcraft.
Hoffman informs us, "For as long as their history has been known, there have been only girl children born to the Sparrow family and every one of these daughters has kept the family name and celebrated her birthday in March." In addition, the Sparrow women always receive their gift on their thirteenth birthday. Elinor can detect when someone is lying; her daughter, Jenny, can see other people's dreams. The thirteenth generation, Jenny's daughter, Stella, is turning thirteen. Stella sees the future, how people will die. But as we read further, it is a probable future since Stella uses her foreknowledge to alter the future. But the gifts of the Sparrow women are used as subplots that are left in the background while the main focus and conflict is the difficulty the two pairs of mothers and daughters have in connecting.
Jenny's estranged, irresponsible, philandering husband, Will Avery (Elinor knew he was a liar, but Jenny refused to listen) reports a murder a week in advance to the Boston police due to Stella's insistence. But then the murder occurs and Will becomes the main suspect (due to the police report and his phone number being found at the homicide scene) and thereafter brings the entire family together in Unity, away from the media frenzy, while the case is pending. Elinor, Jenny and Stella must face each other and their unresolved conflicts. We also learn more about the other Sparrow women, but it all becomes dull after Hoffman repeats the same town folklore over and over like a history teacher who has run out of tales to tell, therefore repeats the same ones with a slight variation.
"The Probable Future" bursts forth with many promises and gleeful expectations; in fact, the pages do turn rather quickly as Hoffman piques our curiosity to know more about these thirteen Sparrow women who have had a major influence on the town's history. But ultimately, the burst disappears all too quickly; only the sparks of clichés, repetitions and implausible character turns remain.

Another intricate Hoffman tale........2005-08-09
Alice Hoffman weaves her usual magic in this story of relationships between mothers and daughters, and the men in their lives. Excellent reading!
Improbable Magic.......2005-05-13
THE PROBABLE FUTURE is the story of the Sparrow women, who have inhabited Cake House in a small New England town for centuries, and who have extraordinary powers. Sound familiar? That's because this novel seems like an attempt to re-create the delight and magic of PRACTICAL MAGIC. However, in my opinion, it missed the mark. Hoffman's natural (and supernatural) descriptions are not the spice that livens the story as they have in her previous works. They seem forced and overdone, and did not endear any of the characters to me. The only Alice Hoffman book I have ever not wanted to read again.
Interesting story, poorly written........2005-03-11
I like historical fiction, and this story has all of the elements of a good plot. It was written in the passive voice used by so many mediocre writers, though. The prose wore me out. The editor was not paying attention. There were details that didn't flow, and character progressions that did not ring true. Will is not a believable character, and even Stella is progressed way beyond her 13 years in a short amount of time. Ms. Hoffman can certainly conceive of a good story, she just didn't tell it well this time. I may take a stab at Practical Magic, since it was well-reviewed. I wouldn't recommend this book as an introduction to Ms. Hoffman's work, though. Pick another.

Audio Book from Brillance Audio........2007-08-11
In the middle of listening to this story I put in a tape that had a lot of noise on it which became increasingly loud. I called the Brillance Audio toll free number on the side of the box and they are sending a replacement cassett tape. No questions asked and no charge. You can't beat that.
A RICHLY INTERPRETED READING.......2003-09-10
Three women with magical gifts form the ladder on which Alice Hoffman hangs her latest mesmerizing tale. Voice performer Susan Ericksen brings a rich interpretation to the words of each as suspense mounts in a small New England town.
The Sparrow women's gifts or liabilities, as some might wish to see them, began many years ago when a young girl who was inured to all pain entered a tiny settlement. Elinor, the first of her descendants, can tell a liar from a mile away. Her daughter, Jenny, can actually see people's dreams as they sleep. And, the next in line, Stella, is able to look into the future.
"The Probable Future" is aptly named. What does the future hold for a trio so abundantly blessed or cursed?

Book Description
A fascinating look at near-future advances, inventions, products, services, and everyday conveniences that will change how we live and work. Marvin Cetron and Owen Davies explore these changes and the impact they will have on everyday life. For example, by the year 2010:Personal computers will offer the power of today's supermachines and artificial intelligence.A telecommunications network will supply the world with services from the contents of the Library of Congress to pornographic videos in Cantonese. The United States-reversing a decades-old trend-will link its major cities with hig-speed railroads.Airplanes will be capable of leaping halfway around the world in just two hours.Consumer goods will be produced at prices so low the poor of tomorrow could live as well as the rich of today.Scientists will have learned to purge the air of pollution, closing up the Antarctic ozone hole and ending the threat of global warming.Heavy industries can move into space, so that Earth can recover from our past environmental follies.Dramatic advances in gene mapping and organ transplants will extend the healthy human life span well beyond the century mark.Science and technology have dominated life in developed countries since the Industrial Revolution. In the twenty-first century, the will change it almost beyond recognition. Probable Tomorrows tells us how.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2001-08-25
Authors Marvin Cetron and Owen Davies examine anticipated trends in technology over the next 15 to 20 years. They categorize their studies under digital systems, the Internet, high-tech materials, nanotechnology, transportation, space, energy, medicine and environmental remediation. They examine specific technological proposals and estimate their chances for success within the next two decades. An appendix lists specific predictions and the probability that each will come to pass. The book is necessarily superficial, since it covers such a broad range of topics. Unavoidably, some predictions are already somewhat dated, particularly those about industries that undergo constant, rapid change, such as medicine, computers and the Internet. However, the book provides a thorough survey of the range of technologies that are under study and development. This book is a rich source of ideas and makes interesting connections among disparate technologies. We [...] recommend the book to all corporate planners, trend-researchers and long-term thinkers.
Probable Tommorow.......2001-05-05
I've read this book only half so far, but I tell even Siskel and Ebert would give this book 2 thumbs up I think..My opinion. I'm probably the only person in the Netherlands Antilles who bought this book. i'm honored to had bought it. I highly recommend it !!!
Driving blindfolded . . ........2001-03-24
and taking directions from someone in the back seat looking out the back window. That's one definition of forecasting. Despite the hazards, the authors bravely predict what is going to happen with some very interesting developments in the business world.
Probable Tomorrows was interesting to read since it was written in 1997 and made some predictions for "today" that we can use as a benchmark for accuracy. And all in all, the predictions were good. The tables at the end of the book, and the timeline for changes can be used to help us see what we might need to do to update our company strategies (as outlined in a recent book e-Strategy).
Some of the topics discussed here were expanded upon in the futuristic book The Age of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil. Between these two books, a broad brush look at what we are in store for emerges and may indeed give us some hints on how to formulate business strategy to take us into the future. Overall, I would rate this book a 3 out of 5. It was well written and easy to read, but books that attempt to forecast the future are qickly dated.
Its The Technology, Stupid!.......2000-09-01
This book is about science and technology, with an emphasis and interest from my perspective on the technology.
Here are seven things I was drawn to that this book points out. First, new technologies arrive first in war. Second, the convergence of computers, telephones, and everything digital is taking place. Third, artificial intelligence makes possible analysis never before possible. Fourth, the availability of information through the Internet is coming with great ease. Fifth, attendance is increasing at meetings announced on the Internet. Sixth, regular, global communciation is happening on the Internet. Seventh, the discovery to delivery time is collapsing.
These seven statements came out in this book published three years ago, but probably written four years ago. How true are they today? Very true, but already way down the road in several of the areas. How much progress have we already made in some of these areas? A lot!
So, that makes the greatest current day value of this book to be one of understanding the rate and pace of change, and understanding the predictability or unpredictability of the future from a recent history perspective.
As a solid work on the future of science and technology, I commend this book as one to still read to understand the way we can continue to frame and anticipate the future through creative, cutting edge, futures research and in-depth thinking.
Conservative, but very readable.......1998-11-18
The authors explore the usual catagories of futurism: medicine, transportation, comunication, etc. Most of their predictions are fairly conservative. Where I found the most interest and actually got a "Wow!" was in their predictions of medical advancements in the next twenty years. If their predictions about cancer treatment, gene replacement, and hormone replacement therapy come true, our lives really will be changed in significant ways.
Although, as I said, most of what they predict is not all that astounding, I found the book very readable and enjoyable. It was much better than "2025."

Book Description
Bond Tables of Probable Future Prices is designed to aid in the evaluation of the effect on bond prices of interest rate risk. The tables do not predict the direction of bond prices; instead they provide probable ranges to which the current price an a particular maturity bond may rise or fall by a specific date in the future. The tables are arranged by initial yields to maturity. The tables present probabilities for initial yields of from 0.5% to 20% for 15 bond maturities and 35 forecast periods. Each table gives nine probabilities, one for no change in rates, four for declines in rates and four for increases. Six probabilities are given: 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, 10% and 5%. The level above which prices will probability rise (or fall) is given for each probability.
The tables offer a more precise method of evaluating the effect on bond prices of interest rate risk than has been previously available. If you plan to invest in long bonds in hopes of a fall in rates, the tables provide the probabilities of a potential rise in prices as well as the risks of a decline in prices. The tables offer a unique approach to evaluating the effect on bond prices of interest rate risk. The tables are based on the fact that the volatility of interest rates is a function of the forecast period, the maturity of the bond and the current level of rates. Probable changes in prices can be calculated from probable changes in yields. The probable future prices are based on the yields contained in Bond Tables of Probable Future Yields.

Book Description
Bond Tables of Probable Future Yields is designed to aid in the evaluation of interest rate risk. The tables are intended to provide better estimates of interest rate risk than have hitherto been available. The tables do not predict the direction of interest rates; instead they provide probable ranges to which the current yield an a particular maturity bond may rise or fall by a specific date in the future. The tables are arranged by initial yields to maturity. The tables present probabilities for initial yields of from 0.5% to 20% for 15 bond maturities and 35 forecast periods. Each table gives nine probabilities, one for no change in rates, four for declines in rates and four for increases.
The tables are based on the fact that the volatility of interest rates is a function of the forecast period, the maturity of the bond and the current level of rates. The evidence for this relationship may be found The Random Character of Interest Rates (Probes, 1990) and in work by M.F.M. Osborne and the author. Six probabilities are given: 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, 10% and 5%. The level above which yields will probability rise (or fall) is given for each probability. For a 10-year bond when yields are 7%, for example, the probability is 50% that yields will exceed 7%. There is a 20% probability that yields will exceed 9.41%. And there is a 20% probability that yields on the same 7% 10-year bond will drop below 5.21%. The yield figures, though given to two decimal places, are approximate.
The tables offer a more precise method of evaluating interest rate risk. For example, if one plans to invest in short bonds in hopes of a rise in rates for later reinvestment in longer issues, the tables provide the probabilities of a potential rise in rates as well as the risks of a decline. The probable future yields also provide information that can be used to calculate future bond prices. If an issuer of bonds decides to wait for a fall in rates, the tables indicate how far rates might fall for a given maturity. The same kind of analysis might be used for buyers or sellers of mortgages. The tables offer a unique approach to evaluating interest rate risk.

Great reading, and garden tips.......2007-09-17
Lots of great garden tips, easy to use products. I learned so much from this book, it is a true keeper for any home.
interesting.......2007-09-17
well, yes if you do Everything in this book your yard will look terrible, but on the other hand who is really going to do ALL of it? some of the ideas were useful, but the best part of the book wasnt something the author wrote about, it was that this book got me thinking in my own way how to reuse stuff i have on hand. So for that reason, that it may stimulate YOUR creative juices, i gave it a four instead of three.
Do you want to make your yard a junkyard?.......2007-05-16
At least the book is amusing with advice like; if your vacuum cleaner quits working, decorate it to be a scarecrow for your garden. Because you can roll it around, it will be more effective than a stationary scarecrow. I did plant an upside-down tomato as a result of reading the book, but not in a kitty-litter box as illustrated. I thought the advice either ridiculous or obvious.
Fun book.......2007-04-04
A nice book with lots of little tips and tricks. My only complaints are that a. I don't wear pantyhose, so some of these aren't relevant hehe :) and b. some of the tips seem kind of repetitive. Other than that, I'm really pleased with my purchase.
Hoot!.......2006-07-28
This book is a real hoot! Many giggles in most chapters. Stuff that really makes sense and that I would never have thought of. Being a re-cycler from waaaay back, this book is great fun.

Seen On The Sidelines
What star quarterback has been spotted with a new flavor of arm candy? It's notorious bad boy Riley Nash, but his newest flame is the last person this reporter could imagine -- none other than Sophie Jordan, beautiful, buttoned-down co-owner of The Hot Zone, the industry's top sports management agency.
What's behind this unlikely team? Some say it has to do with the sudden disappearance of superagent Spencer Atkins. Could there be a connection between the red-hot quarterback and the missing dealmaker? Or has the famous groupie magnet simply met his perfect match in cool, collected Sophie? Watch this space, because the resulting news is bound to be one

Customer Reviews:
Not an enjoyable read.........2006-10-27
If you want a great sports romance try See Jane Score. This was not enjoyable. The characters were not likeable. Riley was a self absorbed weanie, and Sophie anal and uptight. There was no courtship, just two people who have nothing in common arguing about how they have nothing in common.
Fun read - great read (more romance than chick lit).......2006-09-11
for a modern novel - this one was actually really fun! I enjoyed the "sporty" aspect to it - although the part with the "villain" seems a bit one-sided and bizarre but hey at least the plot line seemed unique (I don't want to spoil too much!) Just know that if you get this it will be an interesting/unique/fun/sporty/steamy read!!!!
Funny, Smart and Passionate - Read in One Day !.......2006-07-31
Hot Item is the third novel the Hot Zone Series. Sophie Jordan is the middle sister who always is in control and never takes risks especially with her heart. Riley Nash is the Football player who just found out his biological father is gay and Sophie is the key to the whole solution. Check out the whole series Hot Stuff (2004), Hot Number (2005) and Hot Item (2006).
Hot Item.......2006-07-05
I have read the first two of this three book series, and this final book was not what I expected. The plot was very contemporary, dealing with political machinations and gay men. Family values are upheld by the author. I recommend this book.
Save the best for last.......2006-07-01
This was the last and best book in the trilogy set of the sisters and it was great!! I am sad to know that there's not going to be another book in this set. A great book to read on the bunch!!!! You can't put it down until you know how it ends.

Customer Reviews:
Divinely Beautiful and Profound.......2004-05-28
A rare novel of delicious beauty, compelling narrative, and profound spiritual insight. Should be required reading for all who dare to call themselves Christian.
A Novel for All Those "Left Behind".......2004-04-08
A glorious weaving of mystery-romance and inspirational fiction. I noted this novel was published in 1999. All of its pre-millennium prophecies have already proven true! And its central Biblically prophetic theme -- a satanic strategy to keep lowering the bar of human values -- continues to prove truer with each passing day. If you are among those still "Left Behind," do yourself a favor and put this thought-provoking, beautifully written novel at the top of your "must read" list.
Collectible Writer.......2003-10-31
I collect signed first edition books from extremely promising new authors. I have 3 signed copies of Feather in the Wind. If JDH Duncan isn't recognized as the genunine artistic talent he is, it is because we live in a world where hype and hoopla and big budget promotions outsell a beautifully written, one-of-a-kind story that will make you laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time.
The tongues of Angels.......2003-10-16
If there is anyone you would like to introduce to God in a subtle manner, this is the novel to give them. Some of the most beautiful descrptive prose ever penned and a compelling mystery-romance story open the gates to profound Christian truth.
MOVE OVER DILLARD AND UPDIKE.......2003-10-02
I'd never heard of Duncan until a well-read, well-bred friend "highly recommended" this new author. Annie Dillard and John Updike included, seldom have I read such powerful prose. Add to that incisive wit, profound human and spiritual insight, and a compelling story, and you've got a winner. I burned the midnight oil to get through this inspiring novel the first time, then immediately read it again slowly to savor the sheer lyrical beauty of the language and subtle nuances of plot. I thank my friend for turning me on to this great novel. And, like her, I highly recommend Duncan to you.
