Praise for The New Leader's 100-Day Action Plan
"What a book! New and experienced managers at every level will 'fly' with this programmed learning."
—The Honorable Bruce S. Gelb former vice chairman, Bristol-Myers Squibb
"I love this book and wish I had read it before stepping into my current leadership role. It provides a practical and indispensable road map to success that will help new leaders stack the odds in their favor. Read it and don't be among the forty percent of leaders who fail in the first eighteen months!"
—Sandy Rogers former marketing manager, Procter & Gamble and Apple Computer, and former senior vice president, Corporate Strategy, Enterprise Rent-A-Car Company
"The New Leader's 100-Day Action Plan offers a comprehensive architecture with practical tools and techniques for new leaders to follow. I believe that
leaders who utilize the advice from this book will have demonstrative business and culture-building results."
—Joe Bonito Vice President, Global Leadership Effectiveness, Pfizer
"One of the most basic yet comprehensive books I've read regarding the dos and don'ts of a successful on-boarding process. A must-read for all aspiring business leaders, from first-time CEO's to executives at every level of the organization. Also a great tool for human resources and talent manage-ment executives."
—Joe Griesedieck Vice Chairman, Korn/Ferry Executive Search
Customer Reviews:
A great guide - but be sure to read it BEFORE you start!.......2007-09-25
This is a fantastic book - a very good guide for a manager/executive starting at a new company. Be sure to read it BEFORE you start since some of the actions must be done ahead of your first 100 days. The book includes links to a website with downloadable forms - a nice bonus. Highly recommended and a quick read.
The only complete book for starting a new job as a leader from A-Z.......2007-05-28
We bought this book along with the "The First 90 Days" and read them side by side.
Pro:
-Delves into what questions to ask before the interview through the first several months... I found no other book that is this complete from beginning to end
-Promotes using the time opportunity BEFORE you start a job and in my experience is a major differentiator that I've been able to surprise and delight. Set up pre-meetings, arranging for email/phone and a place to sit, etc. as a chance to listen and learn without the pressure to perform and to begin forming alliances.
-Serves as a handy reference... excellent chapter summaries and a strong executive summary with a timeline and a meaty chapter outline are helpful both now and in the future
-Checklists are excellent and abundant, boiling thoughts down to the most essential elements in a more memorable (less verbose) way
-Checklists include not only job-related tips, but also cover moving-related items as well... handy!
-There are many good tips interspersed throughout the book that are good reminders of the basics you need to adhere to in order to be successful
-Breaks the "sink or swim mindset" often associated with starting a new position
-Excellent use of forms for introspective Q&A; creatively offers forms that can even be downloaded from the internet, a clever and fairly unique offering
Con:
-I think that assessments of what environment you'll be stepping into are underdeveloped and/or understated. You need to know if the team is under performing, just too new, etc.
Bottom line: Highly recommended as a must have text for the aspiring business professional. This book effectively serves as warning, motivation, and how to get results in your new role.
All Performance, Not Hype.......2006-09-29
You won't find this book touted in any web 2.0 blogs, business 2.0 magazines, or pundit 2.0 panel discussions at Demo. It lacks snarky, pithy and/or bloviating commentary. This is an un-hip book that focuses hedgehog-like on your being successful in your new job.
The New Leaders 100-Day Action Plan gives us an insight into an area of our business lives that has not been given enough attention, namely what the authors call, the 'executive on-boarding' experience. Many, many new executives fail in new roles, not because they are incompetent but because they are set up for failure before their arrival.
The invaluable lessons within this book include: 1) your first day begins well before your first day, 2) negotiate after your offer and before your acceptance, 3) know your stakeholders before you start -- get all of these issues ironed out before you accept the job; and many others.
I won't do the standard "Amazon book report review" here, but if you're in a position to transition into a new role, this is a book you really need to read, quickly.
I joined a company many years ago -- hot brand name, great technology, high riding stock price -- only to find out upon arrival that 1) the job I was promised wasn't agreed upon by other stakeholders, 2) that there were others in the company who also had 'my job', and 3) my boss was about to get fired. I left after seven months. Had I spent 15 minutes with this book, I could have unlocked a few of these secrets ahead of time. You live and learn, but you don't always have to learn the hard way.
Save yourself from having to learn the hard way. Highly recommended, quick read.
Think Productive Condensed Wisdom.......2006-09-15
This is an amazing book! Actually, it's a distillation and synthesis of the most relevant content of many books, combined with lots of unique and very valuable insight from the authors, and arranged in a highly useful order.
Key eye-openers are:
*The importance of starting before Day One and how to do it
*The critical success factors of Day One
*The sequence, timelines and guidelines for the critical events in the first 100 days - and how much time you haven't got
Even on established concepts (e.g. establishing shared purpose, building the right team, conducting milestone meetings), this book adds valuable perspective and many effective practices to improve your probability of success.
While the book focuses on the essential steps to succeed in a new job in a new company, it's equally useful for consultants taking on a new assignment or leaders taking on new responsibilities in their current company.
The only downside is the "Ouches" you'll feel when you realize what you did wrong, and what you should have done, in prior experiences that could have gone better.
Highly recommend.......2006-08-22
Even though some examples are arguable and some information is out-of-date (blogging missing as a communication tool) I would recommend this to any new leader...

Book Description
He is one of the most highly decorated soldiers alive. He is also the first to break the code of silence about the most elite fighting force in the world. What Andy McNab has to say is so explosive that the British government tried to stop him.
A street fighter, a hard case, and a flawless soldier, Andy McNab became one of the elite fighting men in "the Regiment"--Britain's covert SAS. His actions behind the lines in the Gulf War made him a hero. But the full story of his life and his amazing career in Special Forces has remained a secret...until now.
In harrowing detail, McNab takes us inside the Regiment, chronicling nine years of covert operations on five continents. Plunging us into a world of surveillance, counterintelligence, and hostage rescue, he takes us behind the scenes on some of their top secret missions. For the first time, he reveals the shocking details of their training--physically severe, mentally grueling, and sometimes deadly. And he dares to expose some of their highly confidential codes and rules--including the one that sanctions murder.
This is the story of the fighting men of the SAS. Here is how they live. And here is how they die...
Customer Reviews:
Inside look at the life of a special operations soldier.......2007-10-01
Great book that takes you through Andy McNab's youth to the beginning of Desert Shield/Storm and the "Bravo Two Zero" story.
Gives you an inside look at the life of a special operations soldier, similar in style and content to "Inside Delta Force" by Eric Haney.
Some of the stories feel a little disjointed and nothing in the book supports the claim on the dust jacket that McNab is "one of the most highly decorated soldiers alive."
Easier to read than "Bravo Two Zero" but not quite as exciting.
Not great, not bad.......2007-05-19
First I must echo the remarks of several other readers below and state that McNab's "Bravo Two Zero" is a far more interesting book. It's not that "Immediate Action" is a *bad* book, mind you, it's just not great. Honestly I found the information about his childhood totally uninteresting and although Delta Force got it's inspiration from the SAS, Haney and Beckwith tell more interesting stories about the Selection process in their books, even if they aren't talking about the SAS. The other downfall of this book is the tremendous amount of information regarding cancelled or just uneventful missions. Lots of talk about training exercises where nothing happens etc. If you are relatively new to this genre then I can see giving the book another star or two, but if you've read a handful of special forces non-fiction books then there is really nothing new here. With the flame-plastered book cover and generous use of exclamation points, this book sets the bar pretty high for itself, and in my opinion it did not meet those expectations. And for those who criticised his prose, I would remind you that this is probably akin to him faulting you for your shooting abilities; remember this man was a lifelong solider, not an English doctorate, and the writing is far better than much of the stuff I encounter in my daily life.
Bogus Book: No info, poorly written, and no insight whatsoever.......2006-03-25
The top of the book states, "The controversial book the British Government tried to supress!" Let me be the 1st to say this is bunk. There is absolutely no information in this book that is controversial in any sense. In fact, any reader can get more information about SF, SAS, or any other force via the Freedom of Information Act.
Also, this book is poorly written. It skips timelines, does not develop any characters (only mentions them), does not finish sequences, and has a plot so thin, it only has one side.
Do yourself a favor. Save your money. Buy another book if you want to learn about the SAS or any other special force, or if you are hung on McNab, purchase Brave 2 Zero instead.
God Save The Queen!.......2006-01-01
After hearing about "Bravo Two Zero" and increasing interest in the SAS, I decided to get a McNab book. I would encourage new McNab readers to read "Immediate Action" action, as it details his youth, how he got into the SAS, and so on up until present. One of the things you may notice, as I did, was that McNab doesn't write like other English authors. Instead, his narrative is very street-wise, and it takes a while to get used to it. Sometimes I was lost reading, because there wasn't enough of an explanation in standard English to translate his jargon. Other than that, the book is a great read.
McNab tells how he rose from his humble beginnings and joined the Green Jackets, a regular infantry unit. In hindsight, it seems like if he hadn't joined the army, he would've probably ended up at working at a factory or some other dead end job. Whether it was fate or luck, he is where he is today. While in the GJs, he recounts his brush with death fighting the IRA. When he entered Selection for the SAS, he details the misery and hardships a candidate had to endure and the fact that several men have died during SAS training, because it involves long humps (hikes in other words) with at least 50 kg in a bergen, or backpack alone traveling in the wild. Selection phase is just that, it tests the mental and physical capabilities of potential SAS recruits. Those who make it go on to further their training and eventually become SAS operators. There were several intense SAS stories in McNab's career, and his accounts of all the things he's done around the world to fight terrorism is gripping. The American military has been exposed to unconventional warfare on an open scale just recently, but Britain has had to deal with it for a long time. It is also interesting to note that operators in the SAS or regular soldiers in Britain don't have that elitist attitude nor do they take themselves too seriously as compared to American special operations personnel. It is a job for them and they don't make a big deal out of it. Again, a great read into the lives and minds of those "Who Dares Wins".
Immediately Engrossing!.......2005-03-03
I read Andy McNab's IMMEDIATE ACTION cover to cover in one sitting. In this fast-paced and fascinating book McNab lifts the veil on the training and mission of the UK's vaunted SAS, the Special Air Service, the elite military force featured in McNab's bestselling BRAVO TWO ZERO.
IMMEDIATE ACTION is hyped as "the book the British government wanted to ban," and its easy to see why. McNab chronicles the grueling, almost constant training received by "the Regiment" with a fine eye for detail. If anybody ever wondered what it takes to become a commando this book tells them. The intensity of the Regiment lifestyle is telling in comparison to the equivalent U.S. Delta Force.
McNab's recounting of various field ops is eye-opening. In these days when Britain is no longer a true superpower it is easy not to recognize the wide scope of British involvement in world politics. McNab informs us that the sun still never sets on the British, empire or no. From fighting drug manufacturers in the jungles of Colombia (whatever happened to the Monroe Doctrine?) to undercover infiltration of IRA strongholds in Derry, to stopping South African (yes!) border incursions into Botswana, the SAS is there, Even James Bond doesn't get around as much in his fictional world.
McNab himself is all soldier, all the time. His entire life's focus is the Regiment, and he cheerfully neglects three wives right into divorce along the way. His Heckler & Koch automatic rifle gets far more loving attention on these pages than his second wife, who is mentioned only occasionally as "working back in Germany". It's clear he's most at home in his self-contained man's world. His emotional maturity for anything other than work is, self-admittedly, not very impressive. Given that he's one of the most highly decorated soldiers in the UK, fate seems to have dealt him a good hand though.
This reviewer's primary (entertaining?)(negative?) criticism of IMMEDIATE ACTION is its linguistic style. It's written in "English" (as opposed to "American"). Even having lived in London for a while I struggled with McNab's idioms. There is a glossary at the back, but it isn't very good. McNab uses the word "bone" as an adjective throughout the book, apparently an example of Regiment-speak. "Bone" is translated as "Naff," which doesn't sound complimentary, but it took me most of the book to really get the sense of what McNab meant. I still don't know what a "Baruki Sangar" is, and there's even a picture of one in the book. Beware the Jabberwock, my son...

Mine to Take has action, adventure, and enough steamy sensuality to light up the night sky. H-O-T!
Customer Reviews:
I love this book..........2007-09-01
I read the series out of order and was a bit confused until I'd gone through the entire series. It was even better on the second read. And third. And so on. Lovely.
Purrfect Male Lead!.......2007-04-03
I read all the reviews before ordering this book, and I'm very grateful for the encouragement to find it. This is a wonderful story and goes into my keeper pile.
First, I loved the creative love-making of the 'Familiars.' There's an anthology out there called 'Alien Sex' that contains short stories of alien, non-human, love-making adventures, and this story would have fit right in. I've long wondered about an imaginative way to present other humanoid love, and here it is! At first, you might be temptted to say - 'yeah right', but Dara Joy finds a way to make it convincing.
Secondly, the adventure of the story was entertaining. The worlds that they visited, and the sights, peoples they encountered as they escaped the Ganakari people, were fun.
I do think that the book represents a missed opportunity to really explore alien cultures. The setting were brushed over lightly. There were a few Star Wars moments - as if the author had watched a couple Star Wars movies and drawn setting details from the movie. So in that sense, the science fictional aspects of the story were luke warm. I very much think more could have been done with the female lead, the fact that she was actually the queen of the planet from which she was escaping got left out after about the first third of the book. I expected Gian to use the fact that he was with the queen of the Ganakari during his confrontation with their leader, to bring peace to their peoples. There were also tantalizing hints about Jenise's late blooming magnetic abilities. Anything special about her got dropped from the story. I thought her 'dance' - the one time only dance of the Frensi People, was a bit lame. More could have been made of the Frensi's culture & Jenise's birthright.
But at bottom, this book is a tender sexual awakening story. About someone who is searching for her independence, and has her journey co-opted by her male companion - in a predatorial sense. But since he's a 'cat,' you have the sense that she should have been watching for that. In fact, he warns her several times in chapter 2, when she meets, him, that she is in over her head where he is concerned, but she insists on her pre-arranged course of action. Actions have consequences - that's one of the axioms of fiction. And the guy has his own journey to figure out how to make the woman eventually fully embrace him, and her own sensuality. But, dear reader, when you look at the cover art for this one, don't be fooled into thinking the guy is not in control, as Jenise did.
Interesting to compare Gian, the Familiar, with Leopard-man, Ravyn, from Dark Side of the Moon, by Sherrilyn Kenyon - although I have to admit I also liked Vane, the big wolf, from Night Play. Mine To Take also compares well with Silver Angel by Johanna Lindsey, thematically, in terms of a sexual awakening story. In that regard, it also can be compared with Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Please change the Cover Art!!!.......2006-10-18
I like the premise of this series - Aviara, the 'Familiar' race, 'nice' affectionate alpha males, some humor. I find her writing style OK. There are many other writers whose actual writing style I find of much higher quality - Mary Balogh, Emma Holly, Susan Sizemore, to name a few. But what I really HATE about Dara Joy's books are the covers!! They are EMBARASSING; enough so that I will never purchase one of her books in a store. Anyone else agree?
When Dara Joy writes about Charls and Familiars, prepare to be entertained. .......2006-04-11
Dara Joy takes science fiction/fantasy and erotic romance genres and blends them into fascinating and entertaining tales. I thoroughly enjoyed "Mine to Take", "Rejar", and "Knight of a Trillian Stars". On the sensuality scale, these books would rate burning. The books are a fun and sizzling romp through unexplored worlds. The stories are about relationships and what motivates people.
The books all have alpha males as the romantic interest. What can I say? I like the type. They are not cardboard, cookie cutter characters. Each has his own personality, with quirks, admirable qualities, and flaws. Her female characters are sometimes capricious, contrary, unreasonable, or unpredictable. I found myself intensely disliking a character and then forgiving them 2 chapters later. What they never are is boring.
If you are caught yawning, it will be because of reading the book straight through the night.
Excellent Read.......2006-01-18
I loved Gian and Jenises story. Although I loved all 3 stories in this series, I liked this one the most. I can't wait to hear Traed's story. I hope that is coming soon.

Book Description
A boy and three adults journey deep into an abandoned iron mine in northern Wisconsin and come face-to-face with evil.
Book Description
A play by Carol Rocamora suggested by the letters of Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper. Chekhov wrote Knipper 412 love letters in the six years they shared.
Customer Reviews:
A shallow and most disappointing play.......2002-01-20
The relationship between Chekov and his wife is indeed very interesting. Unfortunately the play does very little with this rich and beautiful material. Rocamora wrote a shallow and dull play, which does very little but give basic information about the main events in the lovers' lives. Those who know nothing about the subject will not be tempted to look for better sources. For those who know the play will give, I think, no pleasure: it is not interesting, it offers no insights, and in my mind its both artistic and informative failure. For real enjoyment you are advised to read the original letters, or Donald Rayfield's superb biography of Chekov.
Inspired by love letters of Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper.......2001-03-03
"I Take Your Hand In Mine..." is an outstanding theatrical play inspired by the love letters of Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper. Playwright Carol Rocamora draws upon her expertise and familiarity with the life and work of Anton Chekhov (she is an accomplished translator of his writings) to present an exceptionally well crafted and faithful-to-her-subject drama that is especially recommended to school and community theater groups, as well as all Chekhov enthusiasts.
