ONCE UPON A MIDNIGHT DREARY................2007-09-09
Most Michael Connelly fans will remember FBI profiler and heart transplant survivor Terry McCabe, from the book Blood Work (and some may have seen the movie of the same name starring Clint Eastwood), as well as L.A.P.D. detective Harry Bosch (The Closers, Trunk Music, etc.) currently retired from the department and working as a P.I.. Then of course there is Robert Backus, villain extraordinaire with a penchant for the poetry of Edgar Alan Poe, who horrified us with his dirty deeds in The Poet.
In The Narrows, Connelly brings together all the characters from these previous novels and adds another, FBI agent Rachel Walling, to the mix as she and Bosch attempt to determine whether the death of Terry McCabe is "by natural causes" as reported on his death certificate or, as his wife suspects, was in fact a deviously planned and executed murder.
Connelly is famous for his character driven plots and of course the world weary Harry Bosch is the driving force in this investigation. Connelly does however deviate from his previous works by delivering the story from the perspective of three characters rather than just one. Throughout, he completely involves the reader by leading us into the labyrinth, throwing us a curve here and there, and slowly feeding us clues that culminate with a solution to the mystery.
Although, in my humble opinion, not the best book Connelly has ever written, it is a solid mystery/thriller that is head and shoulders above a lot of the material currently rolling off the presses at some publishing houses.
Not for me.......2007-09-01
This book was given to me as a gift. I'm not an experienced reader of the Mystery genre and yet this book still felt like it was churned from a formula. The characters felt more like clichés than interesting people that I cared about. I'll stay away from any more books by Connelly and leave them for others to enjoy. Folks who had the same reaction as me may enjoy a great mystery by Michael Chabon titled: The Yiddish Policeman's Union.
Another Solid Connelly Effort.......2007-08-13
This is my third Connelly novel and my first featuring Harry Bosch. I did not realize that it was a sequel until I was well into the book--otherwise, I would probably have tackled "The Poet" first.
As with the other two Connellys I have read, "The Narrows" reads well and keeps the reader fully engaged. I read it in a couple of sittings because I could not put it down. In fact, I was near the end when an airplane trip ended, and I sat in the baggage area finishing it before going to pick up my car.
Having said that, I still rate "The Lincoln Lawyer" as the best of the three I have read with "Chasing the Dime" as number two. Both of those books had more depth than this, which is pretty much just an exciting, well written serial killer detective story. (Of course, there is nothing wrong with an exciting, well written serial killer detective story.)
So-So but it ties up the plot line from The Poet and other books.......2007-08-12
I've read and enjoyed all of the Harry Bosch novels and the Poet but this was my least favorite of the series. Frankly, I had a hard time finishing this book and I ended up skimming through the last chapters. This is the first and only time that I found myself rolling my eyes at the plot of a Michael Connelly novel. I got the distinct impression that Connelly was just trying too hard to tidy up several plot lines in The Narrows. Still there are many of Michael Connelly's wonderful character vignettes and artfully described settings to reward the reader.
I thought that Connelly pulled off the mixed narration with chapters of Harry in first person and a third person narration for the events involving others. I did not find it annoying.
Fans who prefer The Poet over the Harry Bosch series may find The Narrows more enjoyable since it brings back the Rachael Walling character. If you are an obsessive Harry fan, it is also worth reading since it ties up some loose ends in Harry's personal life.
Good Read.......2007-06-11
I liked this book a lot. I have read three others in the Bosch series and I liked this one the best. Complex mystery that keeps you involved. Very few slow spots. Reading "The Poet" first is not required, nor can I see how it would make reading this book better. If you like Bosch, you will like this book

The best biography.......2000-02-11
Mulford's biography of Warner and Ackland is the best source of information on their lives, politics, and writing so far. She gives a remarkably comprehensive and insightful account of the twenty years on which her books centers. This is one of the best biographies of anyone that I have ever read.

BORING.......2006-07-17
I have liked all the books in the Desert Rogues series until now. This book was so boring I went to the end after the third chapter, just to get it over with. I have read the next book in the series already and loved it. NOT this one though. The only reason to read this one at all is if you insist on reading them in order.
Temptation, love and lust in the desert sun!.......2005-11-29
In the Sheik and the Runaway Princess, you are introduced to Rafe Stryker who is in charge of security for the City of Thieves and an honorary sheik. Rafe is a "closed" man, who is strong, sexy and independent. In this story, Rafe has been assigned to the King of Bahania, King Hassen.
Zara and her foster-sister Cleo have one mission and that's to find out if Zara's father is in fact the King of Bahania. So the girls travel to Bahania to do a little investigating. Upon their arrival and tour of the Pink Palace, they literally "bump" into Rafe who later finds out their reason for being at the palace.
Rafe finds Zara sweet, soft and interesting. He also feels protective of her due to her vulnerability to the situation. The King puts Rafe in charge of Zara when he finds out that she is the daughter he never new existed.
Is Zara ready to become a Princess? Can Rafe fight his attractions for the sweet Zara? Theirs is a love story not to be missed. The way Susan Mallery tells their story is just plain wonderful. I also enjoyed how she described the difference between the sisters, Cleo and her also new found sister, Princess Sabrina. A very enjoyable addition to Susan's Desert Rogue series.
Book Summary:
When prim professor Zara Paxton ventures to distant Bahania, she wants only to find the father she'd never known. But her father turns out to be King Hassan of Bahania. The desert king promptly put his "princess" under the protection of a muscular, mesmerizing Sheik, who sets Zara's sense aflame, yet he refuses to quench the fire!
Steely security liaison Rafe Stryker scorns lasting love. But before he knows it, the bespectacled brunette sneaks into his heart, making him throb with the urge to taste her sweetness. Clearly, innocent Princess Zara wanted to be his woman, but taking her was tantamount to treason. Rafe knows the consequences, but even he can stand so much temptation.
Guess what!! Your a Princess!!.......2003-03-26
While on tour in the middle east a young woman finds the family she's always wanted...Only problem is, its a royal family!! Guiding the way for our newest princess is a fellow American who just happens to be a handsome Sheik with no family of his own and his only loyalty is to her royal family. The second book in Ms. Mallery's second middle eastern series this book introduces us once again to a royal family with growing pains, yet one that is rediscovering the love of man and woman and of family. Very much worth the read if you enjoy Ms. Mallery's writing, or if you just like a good story, you'll feel right at home.
A safe and simmering romance.............2003-03-13
The Sheik and the Virgin Princess may not be all the hot and sizzingly style of Mallery that readers have grown to love, but it definately carries all the heat of her monarch romances in the continuation of The Dessert Rogues series.
Princess Zara and Rafe Stryker bring their contemporary personalities to this tale of age-old classical love.
As Zara struggles to find her place among her new and diverse family, she manages to fall in love with the one person who doesn't want the princess' love......Rafe. Who is secretly fighting a losing battle to wrap the innocent temptress in his arms, and show her what all the fuss about making love is about.
The Sheik and The Virgin Princess, is a safe and soothing read, with tons of lovable characters that you'll definately hope to see more of.
Family found.......2002-11-22
Back Cover description: She was seeking roots and relatives-not royalty! When prim professor Zara Paxton ventured to distant Bahania, she wanted only to find the father she'd never known. But Dad proved to be a desert king--and he promptly put his "princess" under the protection of a muscular, mesmerizing sheik who set Zara's virginal senses aflame...yet refused to quench the fire! Bedding a virgin princess would mean his beheading! Steely security liaison Rafe Stryker scorned lasting love. So how did one bespectacled brunette sneak into his heart and make him throb with the urge to taste her sweetness? Clearly, innocent Princess Zara wanted to be his woman. But taking her was tantamount to treason. Still, even a sheik could only stand so much temptation...
Fun read if you can suspend disbelief that any of this would even happen. This book is part of the author's Desert Rogues series. It moves along and the characters are OK. The princes personalities are not that developed, but they are probably waiting for their own stories.

Susan Mallery's Sheiks.......2006-03-27
Generally I love this miniseries. This book was different in that the Prince was more western than the others. Still, I enjoyed it and I enjoyed the references to Bahania and El Bahar. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and to see what happens with the rest of the Royal Family of Lucia Serrat
Prince Rafiq in Love?.......2005-12-02
Kiley has called off her dream wedding to a snake, Eric the womanizer. She wants revenge so knowing she'll run into Eric at functions through work she has the perfect plan, she wants to be her boss' mistress-Prince Rafiq of Lucia-Serrat. She been working for him for over 2 years now so she knows all about the mistresses - she sends parting gifts, a letter and none last longer than 3 months. The Prince agrees to Kiley's plan and he proceeds to seduce her. He gives her many gifts but the most wonderful one is Fariha, the 10 week old Maltese puppy in Arabic her name means joyful or happy and is she. Kiley falls in love but so does Rafiq with each other and Fariha. He proposes but he can't say those 3 little words to Kiley and she won't accept without them. Kiley finds herself pregnant, Rafiq knows this too, but she still won't accept. What a great love story Rafiq and Kiley have and Ms Mallery has given us another of the "alpha" sheiks. This is #10 of the Desert Rogue series.
"Sheiks inside Los Angeles - whatever will be do?".......2005-11-30
Can you imagine two days before your wedding walking in and finding your future husband with another woman? Would you want revenge? Heck yes and then some! Kiley Hendrick is stronger than she believes and approaches her handsome boss, Prince Radiq of Lucia Serratt to assist her by becoming his mistress. Little does Kiley realize that Radiq will not only steal her heart but will teach her the art of making love.
Prince Radiq, strong, sexy, successful and handsome has had many women in his life. He is honest with them from the very beginning and walks away from relationships without a backwards glance. He has a strong sense of responsibility to his country but not to his family as his mother relinquished her rights to him at birth and his father was too young to accept the responsibility of a son. Radiq was raised by mammies and tutors and didn't know the meaning of family until he accepts Kiley's proposal to become his mistress. Radiq adores Kiley but keeps his heart closed.
The Sheik and The Virgin Secretary is a wonderful addition to Susan Mallery's Desert Rogue series and ties in all Royal families at the end, those from Ed Bahar, Bahania and The City of Thieves. I'm hopeful Susan will continue her series with Radiq's brothers and sisters as her stories are so entertaining.
Book Summary from Back Cover:
The wedding of my dreams was only days away...until I discovered my fianc had a nasty habit of unfaithfulness. So to mend my wounded pride, I turned to the most eligible man I knew: my boss, Prince Rafiq of Lucia-Serrat! Although the dashingly handsome prince had enticed dozens of women, I had just one thing in my mind when I proposed becoming Rafiq's mistress: revenge on the man who'd humiliated me before.
It was easier than I'd expected to go from Rafiq's chaste secretary to his lustful lover. What I didn't expect was to fall head over heels for a man who could give me anything I wanted, except his heart....

Sizzling.......2007-07-31
Cam Knight is a former special forces officer and one third of a family run business that specializes in danger. Cam's father hires him to find out what happened to the representative for his oil company when he was sent into an arab country to arrange a business deal. Shortly after arriving in the country, Cam figures out that the representative is dead and the ruler needs his signature on some paperwork to seal a lucrative deal for his country. To entice him and lower his defenses, "Salome" is sent as his bedmate. Salome is really American Leanna, a ballerina and virgin kidnapped on tour and sold to the evil ruler. Before the ruler defiles her, he uses her to entice Cam. Believing Salome to be a prostitute, Cam starts making arrangements to get himself out of a sticky situation but doesn't plan on taking her with him...Leanna knows the only way out is through Cam and so she uses every trick until they finally escape. Although sparks fly, Leanna resists Cam's advances knowing that he thinks poorly of her but her heart can't help but yearn for him. Cam wants Leanna but she keeps up her "scared virgin act" and he isn't one to take without asking. Finally, when their lives are on the line, the truth comes out and they are both changed forever.
This was a steamy book full of sexual tension but it isn't all about sex. The characters have depth and are interesting and the combination makes for a wonderful book.
the desert virgen.......2006-08-11
this was the missin link to her trilogy...the knight brothers trilogy was the best i ever read.......pls make another set...awesome stories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Desert Fantasy, One You Won't Want to Miss!.......2006-03-21
What a marvelous book this was to read. Cam Knight, the oldest of the Knight Brothers and his story is Sandra's first in The Knight Brother's trilogy. I loved his "tough" character role and how his "Salome" blind-sided him with her strength and beauty.
This story is truly a fantasy set in the desert and one you won't want to miss especially since it's a Sandra Marton trilogy.
From the back cover:
Cameron Knight is a fearless troubleshooter on a mission in the desert kingdom of Baslaam.... Leanna DeMarco is a ballerina; she's been abducted to dance for the sultan of Baslaam....
When the sultan offers Leanna to Cam, he sees a way to escape with her across the sands. But she's temptation! Can Cam resist taking the sultan's gift?
So pleased!.......2006-03-16
[...] I'm writing here is to say how relieved I am to read that although it's in the Uncuts series it's not like the awful one that was the first in that series (a good book in itself, made disgraceful by the spanking sex in it). Thank heavens Sandra Morton hasn't gone that way.
I DO HOPE Harlequin has got the message! Sex yes, perversion no.
(I've given this book four stars on trust, because you have to enter a star rating.)
Thank God!.......2006-03-13
I was really, really worried about this book after reading the first Uncut in this series (a hideous story by Susan Stephens) that involved an icky spanking scene. I was afraid all the Uncuts would be like that. But Thank God!!! they're not. I'd read Sandra Marton before and with one or two exceptions have loved every book she ever wrote. Because I trusted her I was willing to give this book a try and I am VERY glad I did. This one was really fabulous. A standout, even by Marton standards.
The basic story is this: Cameron Knight is part of this troubleshooting group Knight, Knight, and Knight-Risk Management Specialists (with his brothers who I guess will be in future books) and he's sent by his estranged father to look into a missing employee in the fictional Middle Eastern country of Baslaam. There he meets Leanna a ballarina who's been captured by white slavers and sold to the sulten of Baslaam. Cameron discovers the missing employee is dead and he's next on the list. He escapes with Leanna into the desert.
This story is incredibly passionate and sexy beyond belief. But it's also incredibly romantic -- unlike the first Uncut of Stephens. The characters are well drawn and have depth. The action keeps you turning the pages. If you'll excuse the pun, it's a "cut" above the average Presents. I will warn you there is explicit love scenes in the book, which I personally loved because they were so romantic. And there's also physical violence and killing, but it was necessary for the story and the ick factor is low.
If I had one criticism it's that the hero worked everything out with his dad a bit to easy. But if future Uncuts can be like this one, I'm all for it. I'm begging though based on Susan Stephens book . . . NO MORE SPANKING IN PRESENTS. That one was totally gross.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad, not great.......2007-07-18
It's always fun to read about a girl that undergoes some sort of makeover in these stories; in this case, a young Englishwoman goes from a burka to a minidress and the king is not pleased.
Despite having known her since childhood, he is intent on making her into his lover. He doesn't want to take her completely, so the story is mostly 3rd base action until the very end when they're married. Not a great story because the male lead is so demanding of the woman, and once they come together he 'appears pleased' when she's pained (she was a virgin) by his body.
Not a bad read if you have an hour to kill at the airport, but the story is instantly forgettable.
Talk about steamy! Passion in a desert setting!.......2007-05-07
I could actually kick myself that I didn't read the other two books in the series first. This is a wonderful "sheikh" book with all of the elements......powerful, stubborn, sexy as sin, doesn't know the meaning of love only how to rule his country and duty above all!
If you love sheikh books then you'll adore this one, I promise.
