2 out of 5 stars Mostly just a survey.......2007-07-29

This book is comprehensive but really isn't much more than all info pulled out of the schools' catalogs. It proposed to be an insider's view, but there's nothing here you couldn't read in one of the school's own promotional materials. fyi.

4 out of 5 stars Needs more thorough research........2005-08-28

While this book gives parents a good starting point in thier search for a good daycare/nursery/preschool there are other high quality services that were not mentioned. For example one glaring ommision is Smarter Toddler Nursery and Preschool on the Upper West Side which focuses on learning through the Arts. I hope the next edition of this directory will be better researched.

2 out of 5 stars The Only Book on the Subject.......2004-09-16

Sadly, if you have a small child in Manhattan, you probably need this book. The best I can say for it is that it is thorough. Although the book claims that it is the only source for information not written by the schools themselves, it might as well be by the schools themselves. Don't expect the book to make any judgements about any schools. This text simply presents the information in the way that the schools' promotional literature presents it. No judgements are made.
The authors have clearly "drunk the kool-aid" on the whole admissions process, as well. There is no healthy discussion as to whether interviewing 3 year olds is sensible or desireable. The book simply gives you the raw material to help you throw fuel on the fire that is the private preschool racket in NYC.
This inability to question itself or laugh at itself comes out in the prose as well-- resulting in accidental humor. Over and over again the reader is subjected to sentences such as: "Preschool activities include... blockbuilding (to discover math and aesthetic concepts)." Wow. Thanks for explaining that.
Cloying prose aside, the book would benefit from a kind of time-table. Most parents really want to know "WHAT do I need to do, and WHEN do I need to do it?" For example, under admissions, it often says "applications are given out in mid September" when the reality is that if you don't call for the application the Tuesday morning after Labor Day, you will not receive one! THAT would be some useful information.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Book on the Subject.......2002-09-17

This is the only book available on Manhattan nursery schools. (Other information can be obtained through the Parents League.) The authors' book is thorough and factual, giving parents a complete introduction to early childhood schools, including admissions, school contact information, and school portraits. As a New York City educational consultant, I recommend this book as a starting point to all of my clients with young children.

Class size, tuition, curriculum, total enrollment, hours, admissions procedures, facilities, and educational approaches are covered thoroughly. In addition, the book describes each school and its faculty, student body, and parent community in a way that will assist parents in making decisions about their child's future education. The book conveys the personality of each school, allowing parents to choose and eliminate without having to go through the arduous work of gathering all the information from individual institutions and fellow parents. This directory is a perennial reference for anyone contemplating private nursery-school education in New York.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Shallow.......2002-04-09

The book is as shallow as the process. "Let's pressure our 3 year old into taking yoga so that he gets into THE nursery school so that when we summer in the Hamptons, we won't be mortified when we tell our friends where he's going....."

The parents need a reality check, and the authors of this book need to chill out.

5 out of 5 stars What a great find!.......2000-04-25

My wife and I are new parents and have heard many stories on what to do in order to get children into a good school in Manhatten. This book was a great find because it gives you all of the information needed to make an educated decision. I had borrowed it from a peer but now I must have my own copy. I would recommend it to any parent in NYC.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre first time effort.......2007-09-12

I have never read anything by Brenda Joyce prior to this book. I snapped it up in the store after seeing it was Highlanders and time travel - two of my favorites. I wish I would have read a page or two here and there before I bought it. It was so annoying to have the exclamation "she cried" in every fourth sentence. Claire was annoying enough without it. I had a very hard time picturing her as a strong independent woman because all she did was whine. At one point Malcolm calls her arrogant and I think that is an understatement. She talks down to Malcolm and plots to get her way instead of listening to what he has to say. Claire was not very believable or likeable. I did like Malcolm. He's your typical gorgeous laird, with fears and torments who is supposed to find a good woman and save him from himself. Instead he gets Claire. I think the author was trying way too hard in this book. The plot is jangled and a little on the bizare side. I know it is supposed to be a fantasy but even in a fantasy point a is supposed to lead to point b not some convoluted path in between. The whole pleasure crime bit is not realistic. I gave it two stars because of Malcolm. If you are want to read this one borrow it. I am going to give this series another chance but I will borrow it before I buy it to see if the kinks get worked out in the second installment. Royce and Aidan also were bright spots in this book so possibly the next one will be better.

1 out of 5 stars Forced myself through 3 chapters.......2007-08-24

I love Brenda Joyce's historicals, but this book was awful. The whole pleasure crime thing made me very uncomfortable. I really tried to like it, but gave up after it became obvious it wasn't going to improve.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......2007-07-16

I started this book because I had nothing else to read and by the third chapter I couldn't put it down! Brenda Joyce brings you into a world that is amazing! I fell in love with all of the characters and I can't wait to read the next Masters of Time book. Sigh... This book just drips emotion, sensuality and intrigue. I am very impressed and can't wait for more! Good job Brenda! :o) (I happen to like the paranormal change!)

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!!!.......2007-07-16

What is it with all of these authors who are hastily jumping on the vampire romance bandwagon? First Nora Roberts and now Brenda Joyce?? My curiosity got the best of me and I lost $6.99 on this book. Come on Brenda, a "pleasure crime"?? Really? Come on! It was like her heroine came from this alternate universe where these things were commonplace but the author did her readers a disservice by not providing enough exposition about the heroine's environment. Steamy sex every other page just wasn't working. If I wanted hard core sex scenes, I would pick up an Ellora's Cave book. I wanted a great story and instead, I found an author who is desparately making a transition from historical romances to this?!?! Save your money!!

2 out of 5 stars Not her best!!.......2007-07-14

What happened to books like "Promise of The Rose", "The Game", "Secrets", or "The Conqueror"? What happened to BJ's ( no pun intended) writing??? This book lacks so much I don't know where to start.... I am truly dissapointed and I can't even say if I will get the other books in this series. Brenda Joyce has totally let me down with this book. I am hoping that her lastest book in the "De Warenne" family saga will be better.

Color me dissapointed with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Master of Seduction.......2007-09-27

Reading in bed on a winters night is the only way to go reading this book.
Romance at its ultimate.

3 out of 5 stars A quick and entertaining read, but nothing memorable - 3.5 stars.......2007-03-19

All her life, Lorelei Dupree has waited for the day when Justin Wallingford would propose to her. Believing that there was no other man in the world for her, she has set her cap for him until she finally got her wish and she received the most romantic marriage proposal. And as his fiancée, there was nothing she wouldn't do for him even if it meant getting involved in capturing the notorious pirate, Black Jack Rhys.

All across the sea, his name is synonymous with death. It is said that Jack is a ruthless and merciless pirate who kills at the slight provocation. But to those women who have had the pleasure of his company, he's more fondly referred to as the "Master of Seduction". And this so-called master has never suffered the reluctance of any woman he has encountered before... until he meets and abducts the flame-haired Lorelei whose stubbornness matched his own.

When the British army's attempt to trap Jack fails, the irritated pirate subsequently abducts Lorelei. After all, what better way to get back at the man he hates than by holding his fiancée hostage. And there begins a rough sea ride where each casts a wager that results in a hilarious battle of wills.

MASTER OF SEDUCTION is the first book in Kinley MacGregor's Sea Wolves series. While it is a fluffy read with not too much development in the romance area, it manages to be entertaining and provides some humorous dialogues as featured in the witty repartee between the hero and heroine. Even the secondary characters provide much amusement. I do agree that for a "pirate" book, this lacks adventure and mayhem, and the romance area deserved more development. Nevertheless, this was a quick and entertaining read for a lazy afternoon.

4 out of 5 stars While entertaining not realistic.......2007-03-02

If you want a realistic pirate love romance this is not for you. If you can get past some of the outrageous things then yes its a great book. I am a fan of Caribbean set romances and this book does have some nice imagery. But the whole idea of Jack Rhys and his entire crew is a little far fetched. Plus there is the question of the yellow room redecorating, the art supplies, her fiance oviously not caring about her being harrased at the bar, her even being at the bar, ect. I did like the story cos I looked at it as a fantasy. I think thats the best way to enjoy a romance is to believe everything is possible yet none has to be realistic. So if you'd like a good looking, poetry spewing, dashing pirate to lead you into a world of dreams read this book.
Oh yes I also have something to say about the cover...um, Jack Rhys has blonde hair? Did the publishers not recieve a character descripton?

4 out of 5 stars Swash buckling fun and romance.......2007-01-07

I read her books on vampires fist, was impressed, went on
to read her pirate books, loved them, easy to read and
great romance descriptions

3 out of 5 stars In the end a good pirate romance, but took a while to warm up to.......2007-01-04

A fun, fast paced pirate adventure romance story. Some good twists in the end too. It took me nearly half the book to really warm up to these characters, but once I did I found myself really enjoying this book. I had some small issues with our heroine claiming to love her fiancé, but so quickly forgets about him and finds love with our hero. There is also the unbelievable subplot of decorating her private room with nice linens and furniture, and adorning her with pretty clothes that fit...etc. Even in fantasy fiction, its hard to believe a pirate ship would come stocked with so much non essentials. But if you can overlook such writing "liberties" used soley to keep a story cohesive, you may very well enjoy this book.

    Book Description

Samuel Richardson's first novel, Pamela: or Virtue Rewarded (1740) was a bestseller in its time. As its heroine became an icon of feminine virtue, so she also became the subject of vicious parody. Within its didactic account of a servant girl who resists her libidinous master, this brilliant epistolary novel creates high erotic and moral tension.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Of dubious moral value.......2007-09-23

Samuel Johnson considered the plot of this book to be dreadful; rather, he thought one should read it for the sentiment. Unfortunately, that sentiment does not and should not play well in the 21th century. What's more interesting is that it didn't necessarily play well in the 18th century, either. Both Henry Fielding (SHAMELA--brilliant) and Eliza Heywood(ANTI-PAMELA) took it to task. The publication of this novel created divided literary society into two camps--the Pamelists and the Anti-Pamelists.

Why all the fuss and feathers? It's a fairly straight-forward story wherein a young servant girl of great virtue overcomes the lascivious and debauched designs of her employer to tame his passions and to convert him to virtue and marriage. At that point, Society, as represented by his sister, shows its violent disapproval of Pamela's sinning above her station. However, Pamela's virtue and her Christian faith overcome even this object and she and her husband go on to live happily ever after.

As a plot, it's simple, but melodramatic; frankly, the Victorians would blush. Furthermore, the characters are never fully rounded, but too often stick-figure representations of specific virtues and/or vices. For about the first 160 pages, one has a pretty good description of the power relationship between master and servant, but after that, to the modern reader, it turns into a sado-masochistic relationship wherein Pamela comes to identify with her abuser--and Mr. B does abuse her, even by the standards of the 18th century. Also, there's the technical execution--even by the standards of the 18th century, the narrative becomes repetitive and self-circling in a fashion one does not see in Fielding or Heywood or even Defoe. All-in-all, one reads this really only to understand what Fielding and Heywood are rightly mocking.

1 out of 5 stars I read most of Volume I and just couldn't take any more!.......2007-09-13

I am generally a huge fan of 18th century Literature (even if I have not had any formal education in it), but I couldn't STAND this book! Pamela herself is a complete Mary Sue, to use the fanfiction term- she is a picture of perfection in every way, though she is so insistent about how good and chaste she is that some times I just wanted to smack her! Her would-be seducer, on the other hand, is so inconsistent in his behavior that I sometimes wondered if he was the same person. Here is a man who will go to ridiculous lengths to get what he wants (He even gets his housekeeper to hold Pamela down so he can forcibly rape her!) and then drones on and on about how she is the best, most beautiful, most virtuous of women, etc. You would think that after their marriage he would be reformed, but he soon starts making silly arbitrary rules that his new wife must follow, as if apparently her only purpose was to please him- and she begs for even more of these "wise injunctions"! Some of the other characters display the same illogicality: the neighboring gentry in Lincolnshire do nothing to help her when they know she is being held against her will, and then turn around and give more of the same speeches on Pamela's perfection as if nothing had happened! The fact that Pamela is "rewarded" with marriage to the same man who spent so much of his time trying to ruin her, and that she goes on as if he were the most honorable man in the world is alone cause for complaint. I think my only consolation for having wasted so much of my free time on reading this will be being able to understand Shamela and Anti-Pamela.

5 out of 5 stars Samuel Richardson's "Pamela" was the first English Bestseller!.......2007-03-17

Pamela was published in 1740 quickly becoming a popular work of fiction. Britain was becoming a literate nation and novel reading was becoming a popular pastime in English homes. Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) was a printer whose novels were epistolatory (all of them are written in the forms of letters-in Pamela her letters are to her parents who have become very poor.)
Pamela is a maid in the home of the wealthy Mrs. B. The good lady dies and we see Master B the scion of the family seeking to seduce the virtuous 16 year old girl. Pamela is abducted and taken to an isolated estate being held in genteel captivity by servants in the employ of Master B.
Pamela seeks to escape but her plans are foiled. She falls in love with Mr B. In part two we see Pamela being introduced into polite society by her wealthy husband. We even learn that he has fathered a child by a woman now living in Jamaica who was once his mistress. The novel ends with virtue triumphant as the good Christian Pamela becomes a trophy wife of Mr. B.
The plot, therefore, is a simple one in which a Cinderella/Jane Eyre heroine spotless for her virginal purity wins the heart of a rake. What makes Richardson worth reading is his psychological depth in analyzing why characters acts as they do in the objective world.
Pamela is much shorter in pagination that the massive Clarissa novel of 1747 (over 1500 pages long!) and is lighter in tone. There are comic characters presaging the work of Dickens in the Victorian age. Clarissa Harlowe is a rich young lass while Pamela comes from the ranks of the lowborn seeking to exist in a very class bound conservative social milieu.
The characters speak in high-flown language which makes the 21st century reader skeptical that anyone (much less a teenaged Pamela could speak or write in such words!) The second half of the novel is slow and
somewhat tedious as we see the happily married Pamela tell us how great Mr. B is and how grateful she is to him to have been elevated to a higher social class than the one in which she was born. This old novel would not win applause by modern day feminists!
The novel does have more movement than the very static "action" in "Clarissa." We travel to eighteenth century manor homes; inns on the roadside and see the slow pace in which life was lived in the
    English countryside.
This novel would be parodied by the witty Henry Fielding who wrote "Shamela" in imitatiion of the pieties uttered in prose by Richardson.
Anyone who is interested in the birth of the English novel needs to read
"Pamela." It has its moments and its dull stretches but it is worthy of attention for its historical and literary importance.

    5 out of 5 stars Saucy, engaging 18th century soap opera...and more!.......2006-10-25

NOTE: I have read several editions of Pamela, and they vary quite a bit, as Richardson frequently revised his books. I can't say one version is better than another, so this review is general to all the ones that I have read.

REVIEW: This novel written in the form of letters started a revolution in fiction, and was an enormous best seller in its own day and beyond. Pamela, the working class heroine, was loved, hated, imitated and satirized. She was called a model of female virtue, a conniving slut, and everyting in between, and plenty has been written on all sides of the question.

What was all the fuss about? Well, for one thing the story is a cliff-hanger, with the teenage heroine constantly escaping danger at the last moment. In addition to suspense, this book also gives insights into the 18th century British class system, the status of women, and the then quite radical ideas of social mobility and self-improvement. Richardson did something quite innovative when he created a heroine who was young, rural and from the servant class. His point was that a working class woman of good morals and good sense could be just as worthy of admiration as the upper class ladies who had always played the starring roles in serious works of literature.

But if you're not writing a scholarly paper on Pamela, never mind all that. Pamela is an engrossing novel with lots of momentum, intresting characters, a quirky love story, and a happy (maybe) ending.

4 out of 5 stars Like an overactive Dyson, it sucks you in.......2006-09-17

Reading Pamela is like seeing a car accident along the road. Within ten pages, I hated myself for looking on, but somehow I just couldn't turn away. Largely, I hated her--Pamela's continual musing about her virtue to her parents, and how all the other servants love her and all that, is why some novels just shouldn't be written in the first person. But still, it sucks you in, like an addiction, like a tornado, like a vacuum cleaner.

The basic story is this: Pamela is a servant girl (a very virtuous one, as she will tell you again and again), and her master repeatedly seeks to destroy that virtue, through a variety of devious, occasionally outlandish tricks. He eventually even goes so far as to kidnap her. I can't go beyond that without giving away the ending, though I must say any real woman would not have done what Pamela ends up doing at the end, if she were treated the way Pamela gets treated in this book.

As much as Pamela is an icon of cloying, annoying feminity, this is absolutely a must-read book, and it deserves four stars. Why? Because, like I said, it sucks you in, which is what any fun read should do. Also because you simply can't understand the history of the English novel without reading this--the first huge, massive, unbelievably big best seller of English novels. This book is why ordinary people first began naming their daughters "Pamela"--before this novel, Pamela was an obscure name. Moreover, you can't appreciate Henry Fielding's Shamela, or Eliza Haywood's Anti-Pamela, without reading this first. The book was so popular in its day it spawned lots of hilarious satires like these two. So read Pamela, then purge yourself of all virtue by following it with Shamela and Anti-Pamela.

One last point: This particular edition is a very good choice, because it's based on the original edition that Richardson published. Richardson made later corrections in other editions to attempt to address some of the criticisms people made of his heroine. But the original is what prompted the big "Pamela craze" and all the satires, so I'd recommend getting a copy modeled on it.

Lurin's Surrender: It's the hefty bounty on his head that draws Captain Mara Seni to Lurin Vez, not his darkly handsome visage, his intelligence, or his compelling, electric blue eyes. When she captures him, however, she very quickly discovers that the legendary sensual skills of the Thesha are no myth and Lurin means to use every skill he possesses to win his freedom. The Thief of Mardu: Professional thief Isa Araye has a bad feeling about her current job, and the dead body she trips over near the safe proves something is terribly wrong. Catam of Mardu, a successful bounty hunter, is bored with his life, restless for reasons he cannot explain. So when his peacemaker brother needs his help, he readily agrees. How hard can it be to track down a murdering thief hiding on his own homeworld? But things are not as they seem, and Catam's boredom turns into something else entirely as he and Isa set out to prove her innocence. Rating: Contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and mild violence.

Bounty hunter Mara Seni has captured a suspected rapist and is returning him to planet Jaron where Mara was hired. The prisoner is suspected to be a Thesha, an extinct race of sexual beings who can charm, entice, and sexually fulfill women without cessation. Mara visits the prisoner and questions him as to his guilt. The prisoner gives Mara his side of the story and Mara leaves without believing him. Once in her cabin, she goes to sleep and begins to dream.

Lurin Vez can't believe that he let his guard down and was captured. He is also can't believe that Captain Mara is non-responsive to his mind control efforts. Lurin decides then and there that this calls for drastic measures and so he sets about invading Mara's mind as she sleeps. Bringing himself and Mara to sexual fulfillment, Lurin knows that it is only a matter of time until Mara is his and he is free.

Mara and Lurin finally give in to temptation and spend an explosive few hours together. That is when the trouble starts. They let their guards down and Mara's ship is taken over by rebels led by the daughter of the Nobless that hired Mara. The daughter, a cruel nymphomaniac and sexual deviant, wants her very own Thesha and she will stop at nothing to get him.

Lurin's Surrender, a futuristic romance, was no-holds-barred hot. I could feel the sexual tension in the air and the electricity that Mara and Lurin experienced when together. Add the element of surprise, throw in some butt-kicking, and finish with a great love story. Lurin was in-your-face hot. I loved how he tried to control Mara and was unable to get her to cooperate. Mara didn't need anything to make her want Lurin, and want him she did.

Lurin's Surrender by Marie Harte was a great afternoon read. Not overly loaded with scientific language or futuristic mumbo jumbo, I was able to sit back and just enjoy. Good job Ms. Harte!

'We became involved the minute our eyes met ...' Sparks flew between Emma Baccarat and Patrick Kinsella the first time they met - but Emma didn't understand why. After all, she was a confirmed cynic who didn't believe in love, and even if she did, a notorious womaniser like Patrick was the last man she'd choose!
