wonderfully strange little book........2007-01-23
this is the sort of novel samuel beckett could have written if he were capable of writing an interesting novel. a fictious author guides you through the creation of a character named Macabea, a poor anonymous woman living in poverty in rio, brazil. all along the authors voice is with you, highlighting the artificalness of the storys construction. and what would promise to be a bleak tale of this characters life being built in front of you is actually a tale shot through with a dry sense of humor that works perfectly. wonderful writing throughout, including some fine wry dialouge. i highly recommend this to anyone with a taste for the strange.
Not enough "bang" for my buck.......2006-11-13
This short novel started off ok, but it was not long before my brain was awash in confusion. This is a highly abstract experimental novel that makes little if any sense. Without question the author has a wonderful vocabulary and on occasion really knows how to turn a phrase, but she doesn't seem to know how to put her natural talents to their best use.
The reader never gets to know the characters (and quite frankly doesn't want to get to know them) because they are so flat--less than flat. Furthermore, the narrator does anything but narrate the story because he is always too busy calling attention to himself and the fact that he is narrating a story that no one gives a s**t about. There is no plot and the overall idea is as hopeless as they come--TRULY HOPELESS.
I really wanted to like this work and I pushed on, almost against my will to finish, but all I was left with was a disappointment that bordered on downright despair. For such a slim book, this may have been one of the most cumbersome ordeals I have put myself through as of late.
Simply put, there are millions of better things out there to read and I should probably note that this is the only book I have ever awarded a one star rating--this is because zero stars is not an option.
I want the world!.......2006-03-25
To see a thing of beauty.A woman considered homely and boring that's so happy. Finding joy in a world filled with her average looks and job and boyfriend, she defies sociEty by being a star shining in the appropriate hour of need!
I Left My Heart in Rio de Janeiro.......2004-12-06
(Small Bang) The Hour of the Star! Since my first and only reading of Lispector's final work, I have bought over three dozen copies, not for myself, but to hand out routinely to people I deem worthy of experiencing her words. I will usually write, with blue ink, on the bottom of page 70, "This has been a practical joke."
(I'm having a hellish time writing this review... this review in itself is insignificant, it is the promise of golden rice at the review's end that prompts me to continue)
I recommend buying a few dozen copies yourself, but not for the purpose of reading any of 'em, just to hand them out to people you don't like and say, "This is a very good book, I think you'll really enjoy reading it." This also works great for an April Fool's Day "punk."
Finally, as I fight off eight or nine urges to drift off into an incoherent tangent, stringing dozens of pointless philosophical questions together, I will recommend highly that all masochists purchase and treasure this book.
Not a normal book, and that's what makes it great........2003-05-24
Don't dig into this book expecting something normal. Lispector wasn't a normal writer at all. She wasn't a normal woman. This book was written while her cancer in her uterus was eating her alive, and you can almost taste the angst from the narrator. Not that her other books are any different, but in here it feels even more authentic. Perhaps it's due to the fact that the narrator is ficticious as well. Under the name of Rodrigo S.M., Lispector slashes open her soul and reveals nothing, because that's what it is.
Do not read this book waiting for a story. It tells three stories, the first one being about Macabea. The second story is the narrator talking about his writing, and the craft. The third is the narrator talking about his life.
Some critics claim that Lispector is "existencialism for the masses" (as impossible as that may sound) because she avoids complex theories. She refused to read other existentialist authors, because they were too pompous. Lispector admits that there are no answers to her questions, but that absence does not make the questions dissappear. There are a couple of times where her train of thought is hard to follow, but they came very rarely, and the book is definitely worth it. Saying that she was riding on her reputation shows blatant lack of knowledge on her works. Every other book of hers is written in this sinuous manner, and much of the recognition she has in Brazil was attained shortly after her death, since her books never sold well. After reading this, I can't say I don't understand why. It's not a normal book.
It's hard to decide which part of this book is sadder, Macabea's pathetic existence or the Narrator's angst. But both are awesome. Just don't expect anything normal, and you'll love it.

Bob and Ray's swan song.......2004-06-22
If you do not already know who Bob and Ray were, I would be hard-put to sum them up briefly. They were a brilliant comedy team who came of age in the golden age of radio and whose sketches endlessly satirized radio braodcasting itself. They created a large cast of comic characters, stretching their pliable voices a million different ways. Their humor was subtle and refined - they were two of the greatest deadpan comics of all time.
Bob and Ray's main medium was radio - they were shy men who did not generally work well on stage or TV. But they did do two stage shows, one of which was "A Night of Two Stars" from the 1980's (the twilight of their career). I recommend this recording only to those who already know and love Bob and Ray. It is not a good introduction to Bob and Ray's work as a whole; some of the sketches are not very well chosen, in my opinion. But die-hard Bob and Ray devotees will love this. Carnegie Hall is packed with Bob and Ray fans - people who grew up on this wonderful duo - and the atmosphere is infectious. Bob and Ray bring out some of their classic characters, and the audience cheers them on as if they were old friends. What a wonderful way to end their remarkably long career (Bob and Ray did comedy together from 1946 untill Ray's death in 1990). What a wonderful farewell to these remarkable gentlemen of comedy. And best of all, we get the wonderful Al Hirschfeld caricature on the cover! Also be sure to get CLASSIC BOB AND RAY, BOB AND RAY: THE LOST EPISODES, (both of which show B & R in their prime) and the award-winning BEST OF BOB AND RAY (from their public radio show in the 1980's).

Absolutely the most accurate and most convenient to use........2003-05-12
When I was introduced to the Rosicrucian ephemeris I promptly sold the one that I had been using. In my opinion, this is the most accurate and convenient ephemerides in existance (it is based on the newest standards of the International Astronomical Union, as well as, the latest research conducted by NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.) It is also computer typeset to eliminate human error. You have all the data you need for planet and lunar node calculation right in front of you on a single page. Plus time is based on midnight and not noon figures, so it saves you a correction in your calculations.
Perhaps I am old fashion in my thinking, but if you cannot use an ephemerides and a book of tables to erect a natal horoscope by hand (at least once) then you do not really understand astrology.
The introduction for this edition is written in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. The tables use standard symbolism that any user should understand regardless of language.
As for this volume being "obsolete", the vast majority of people currently living were born between 1900 and 2000, so this will be a useful tool for many years to come.

Learn what used to be common knowledge.......2007-09-02
.
Before the light pollution of the late twentieth-century, the stars and constellations were a fairly common part of western knowledge, and the ability to navigate by the stars was a universal skill. Much of that skill and knowledge is all but lost to the larger section of western society.
This book helps to reconnect with the environment without the use of portable electronic devices.
I was able to learn the "6 Constellations, 4 Stars, A Planet, A Galaxy, And How To Navigate At Night" (Okay, I already knew the big and little dippers and Polaris...so I had a head start.)
If you are curious about the stars and constellations, there is no easier way to learn them.
If you want astronomy pictures from NASA, look here: [http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html]
They make a great screen saver.
you can still learn at 60.......2007-02-09
What a wonderful book!!! My husband borrowed this book from a friend and after one night of use, we bought it. It is amazing how quickly you can learn the stars and constellations. They were not kidding when they said it only takes an hour...we are proof, at age 60, that it can be done!! Buy it, you won't be disappointed. Also great for kids
Stikky Night Skies is 'Bound' to work-Guaranteed!.......2005-08-23
I just returned from a sailing holiday in the Florida Keys and took Stikky Night Skies with me - The book is fantastic. The first evening out under the stars I was able to lead a pretty comprehensive tour of the night sky from the cockpit.
I had read the reviews that mention a problem with the binding but had no problems. In correspondence with the publisher they explained that an earlier print run had been problematic which has now been fully resolved.
For anyone who has a copy with a binding issue they can be reached through their own web site Stikky Dot Com. They will happily replace any title with the a binding issue a per the guarantee on the back cover.
I highly commend this title to lovers of the outdoors, campers and sailors alike.
Easy way to learn to recognize constellations.......2004-02-25
A simple but effective approach, "Stikky Night Skies" teaches the reader how to recognize six constellations, 4 major stars, a planet, and how to always determine north in the night sky. Besides showing the constellation pattern and describing how to recognize it the book contains multiple pages of actually night skies to practice on. After completing the book it is fairly simple to locate each of the constellations mentioned.
I did have one problem with the book. The gluing method used to attach the cover on my copy was of such poor quality that the cover came off with just one reading. Of course it can just be glued back on with good quality hot glue, but you would expect it to be of better quality from the beginning.
Other than this one caveat, if you want to know how to recognize a handful of constellations that you can use as a base to learn other ones, you can't go wrong with "Stikky Night Skies".
200 black pages with little white dots on it ... that's all?.......2003-09-09
After all the reviews I read here I expected a lot more. Before I cover the content of this book let me tell you that the binding of this book is pittyful - it fell apart after the first indoor use. The printing quality appears to me like a cheap black and white newspaper print (no pictures or decent draws), just that the paper is somewhat thicker. The book consists only of black pages with wihte dots on it resembling stars. In one or two easy sentences on each page you are supposed to figure constellations. It works and in an hour you are about to find 5 or 6 constellations in the book.
But for whom is this book made for???
Little kids?- No, nothing is explained about stars, solar system, universe etc. Just to find a few constellations won't hold up a kids interest for very long.
The newbie astronomer? - NO. There is no explanation given to nothing. So it is not only that you know nothing about the basics of astronomy, it also fails to live up to it's own expectations. Most people will be surprised that they don't find the constellations they found so easily in the book. Thats because they've been told nothing about the seasonal constallations, the difference between the northern/southern hemisphere, no directions given where to find stuff, nothing about the rotation...
So here comes my personal guess what this book is good for:
If you wanna impress your girlfrind with your newly acquired skills and you want to take no effort... this is it. You just have to be lucky to be in the right place at the right time of the year ... and most importantly, she shouldn't ask any question like "What is this bright misty arc overhead?" , "Is a shooting star a fallen star?". Those questions will embarrasse you to nature, because you couldn't answer them from the content of this book.
Honestly again, get yourself T. Dickinson's "Nightwatch" and you will find all constallations easily and constantly at any time of the year. You will know the answers to all the questions an interested rookie might ask himself.
Book Description
Well-known comics creators take comicdom's greatest challenge: to completely write and draw a full 24 page comics story in 24 straight hours. A combination of energetic improvisational effort and a marathon effort, the 24 hour comics challenge is a rite of passage in the comics field. Stories include: The very first 24 hour comic, created by Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics), comicdom's leading theoretician and inventor of the challenge. Instead of doing one 24 page story, former X-Men artist Paul Smith (Leave It to Chance) created six shorter stories totaling 24 pages, including the true tale of his father's capture and rescue during World War II. "Counter" by Mary Jane writer Sean McKeever is a tale of awakening in a slightly different dimension. Dave Sim provides "Bigger, Blacker Kiss," a story created in the midst of his work on the recently completed 300 issue opus Cerebus the Aardvark. Tone Rodriguez, the artist of The Adventures of Snake Plissken, provides an original science fiction action adventure. And more!

Book Description
In her thrill-packed trilogy Cold Truth, Hard Truth, and Dark Truth, Mariah Stewart proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that she can brilliantly and suspensefully handle the truth. Can you? Then prepare yourself for the shocking, eye-opening Final Truth, in which a woman who specializes in exposing lies finds herself trapped in a real-life nightmare.
All that stands between Lester Ray Barnes and the state of Florida’s death chamber is a judge’s signature. He is sentenced to die for the rape and murder of a young woman, his conviction hinging on two pieces of evidence: DNA testing and an eyewitness who placed him at the scene. But when the story breaks that the DNA testimony at trial had been fabricated and that the eyewitness was coerced by a cop, all hell breaks loose. In the absence of credible evidence to sustain the conviction, the court is forced to set Lester Ray free. It’s the sort of circus the media adore–until it turns into the kind of Grimm’s fairy tale the media love even more.
Intrigued by the story of a young man railroaded by justice, true-crime writer Regan Landry is drawn into Lester Ray’s camp like a moth to a flame. For Regan, writing is a way to stay connected to her late literary-legend father, and her knack for detective work makes her a natural when it comes to uncovering new leads in even the murkiest mysteries.
Eager for the spotlight, Lester Ray willingly agrees to work with Regan on a tell-all about his experience as an innocent man on death row. But less than a week after leaving prison, he vanishes from the Sunshine State. Soon after, darkness descends on the outer banks of North Carolina as a string of women are raped and murdered in a frenzied spree. Fearing the worst, Regan, along with Special Agent Mitch Peyton and the FBI, sweeps in to confront the unspeakable: the horrifying possibility that they have helped to free a cunning monster with an insatiable appetite for death–and a ruthless determination never to be caged again.
From the Hardcover edition.

Much Better..........2007-08-22
I am a big fan; Mariah Stewart is an auto buy for me. I was worried though after the first couple books in the "Truth" series. They were not as good as I had come to expect. However, this one seems to be back on target for me. Although I was disappointed that the bad guy was so obvious. At least Regan's mystery was finally solved. That one was also obvious a few books ago.
All in all, I highly recommend this author. But if you've never read her stuff, start with the set that has "Dead" in the title. Those are much better. Here's looking forward to her next set of books with "Last" in the title. I already have the first one and am getting ready to start it.
MORE TWISTS THAN A COUNTRY ROAD........2007-03-21
I like books like this, full of twists and turns and a page turner besides. As with the other books by Stewart, her character development is without peer. I am certainly not going to go into a plot review with this review as that has already been done here. I will say though that for a throughly enjoyable read for those that enjoy this particular genre, you cannot go wrong with this one. This is a simple read though, one that is good for a couple of nights on the weekend. This too is a plus for me. Recommend this one highly.
Great Author.......2007-03-16
Mariah Stewart is one of the best authors on the market today. This final installment of the "Truth" series was a good read that I found hard to put down.
My only problem was that I thought the culprit was a bit obvious due to one scene early in the book where they didn't seem to fit.
Other than that, there was a great cast of characters and it was a good wrapup to the "mini-series."

Great rainy day read.......2006-11-07
An excellent ending to the Truth series. As previously mentioned, you do not have to read the other three 'Truth' novels but, if you have, you will recognise several of the characters in this book, it will also answer all your questions from the first three.
Final Truth.......2006-08-28
Regan Landry is used to solving puzzles. Her job as a true-crime writer is to find all the pieces of a crime and put them together to present the reader with all of the little details, from the life of the criminal to the shocking details of the crime itself to the outcome. She is used to digging to get to the heart of every mystery she encounters, and once she is interested in something she will not rest until she has found all of the answers.
When her father, bestselling true-crime writer Josh Landry, is murdered Regan becomes determined to pick up where he left off. When she stumbled over a report card for a boy named Eddie Kroll, she became determined to get to the bottom of his identity, and even more so when she found out that she was being lied to by his family. She is visiting his family again, trying to get them to talk to her. When she turns on the TV in her hotel room to see a taping of And Justice For All, she learns about Lester Ray Barnes. Immediately she calls the man in her life, FBI Agent Mitch Peyton. Together they decide to find out as much as possible about Lester Ray.
Lester Ray is on death row for the alleged rape and murder of a woman. But, it appears that he may have been convicted because of the false testimony of a man at the lab where his DNA was tested. Regan instantly becomes interested in his case, a man falsely accused of murder and railroaded into jail by a number of lies. She decides to write a book about him, unusual since she normally writes cold cases.
When Lester Ray is released from prison, Regan sets out to meet up with him. But when women start being raped and murdered, all the evidence points to Lester Ray. Mitch and Regan are even more suspicious when Regan cannot contact either Lester Ray or his lawyer. Now Regan has to face the possibility that she helped set free a monster. But is Lester Ray the killer, or is there a copycat out there, one who has a vendetta against Regan herself? When she is threatened, Mitch is the only man who can save her. And when she learns the truth about Eddie Kroll, Mitch is the only man she can turn to.
Ever since reading about Regan in Dead Even, I have been waiting for her story to come out. In Final Truth, Mariah Stewart has written an incredible story full of intrigue, chilling murders and a touch of romance to provide a ray of hope amidst all the death. Regan and Mitch are a fantastic couple, they mesh well together and Mitch is a wonderful man, when Regan is threatened he stops at nothing to protect her. Mariah Stewart has long been a favorite of mine for her realistic portrayals of the men and women who dedicate their lives to catching murderers. Final Truth is an excellent addition to her wonderful collection, and I can't wait to see what she writes next.

Shocking Finale.......2006-07-04
Although it is not necessary to read the other three books in this series, if you have, Final Truth provides a very satisfying conclusion to the story of Regan Landry and Mitch Peyton. In this book, the story focusses on Regan and her quest to find out about her late father's (a famous true crime writer) fascination with Eddie Kroll. At the same time, Regan is trying to come up with an idea for a new book and becomes interested in the story of Lester-Ray Barnes, a convict on death row who may have been wrongly convicted after a major foul up with DNA evidence. A series of grisly murders and Regan and Mitch (an FBI agent) are on the trail of a killer...is it Lester-Ray? If you enjoy suspense, forensic science and well thought out character development, this book is for you!
Review by Tammy for Fallen Angel Reviews.......2006-07-04
Regan Landry is a writer following in her fathers famous footsteps by writing about true crimes. She has been trying to track down information on Eddie Kroll, a man her father had little information about but sparked her curiosity, when she ran across information on another high profile case that was sure to have the justice system reeling. Regan learns that DNA evidence has been fabricated and mishandled by the lab entrusted to handle it, which sets two convicted rapists and murders free. She is intrigued by the story and meets with one of the men released, Lester Ray Barns, to see if it would be a story she would tell. Soon Regan finds herself in the middle of a string of murders that points back to Lester Ray, who has disappeared, and the only way to find him is through Regan.
FBI agent Mitch Payton is dating Regan and determined to keep her safe from the killer focused on her while also investigating a string of murders. However, when Regan learns of the secret her father had been hiding from her, it leads her right into the hands of the killer; will he be able to get to her in time?
Final Truth is the fourth and last book in the Truth series that will explain the Eddie Kroll mystery. This story is the perfect ending to this series! It is a chilling tale that will keep you riveted with its compelling characters and descriptive storyline. Final Truth.......2006-06-21
If you like Mariah Stewart's writing, you will probably enjoy this book. However, I didn't think the mystery was particularly well done, I figured it out very early in the the book. Also, the "shocking surprise" about Eddie Kroll was broadcast at least 2 books ago. Read these for the characters and writing style, not the mystery.
