Book Description
Superintendent Richard Jury has been wrong before. But when stating that "nothing ever happens in Stratford," he never imagined just how wrong he could be. Besides the stage murders committed nightly at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, a real one has been performed not far from a popular pub known as The Dirty Duck.

A good read in an Excellent Series by a Great Author.......2007-06-26
The Dirty Duck, by Martha Grimes, is the 4th book in this excellent series. This is not the strongest entry in the series, but it is still a quick and engaging read; a journey well-worth taking. The setting here is Stratford - Upon - Avon during a Shakespearian festival. For those of you new to the series, I would recommend reading them in order for the best reading experience; however, they are also fun as stand alone novels.
Here is the series in order:
The Man with a Load of Mischief
The Old Fox Deceived
The Anodyne Necklace
The Dirty Duck
Jerusalem Inn
Help the Poor Struggler
The Deer Leap
I am the only Running Footman
The Five Bells and Bladebone
The Old Silent
The Old Contemptibles
The Horse You Came In on
Rainbow's End
The Case has Altered
The Stargazey
The Lamorna Wink
The Blue Last
The Grave Maurice
The Winds of Change
The Old Wine Shades

Sheer witty fun!.......2004-07-27
The 4th in the series of Brit Mysteries named after pubs, was the first tale I ever read of Martha Grimes and it instantly made me a devoted fan. I actually bought the audio tapes simply because Tim Curry was the narrator. He has done dozens and dozens of audio books and he is such an amazing talent. So, imagine my delight when I discovered a new author as well. Instantly, I went out and bought every Grimes Curry has recorded. I'm just sorry, they have not filled out the whole series with Curry's audio versions. Hopefully, someday...
Superintendent Richard Jury said "nothing ever happens in Stratford" - naturally, in Grimes fashion, he is forced to eat those words. Grindeline Bracegirdle an American on vacation in England was enjoying a drink at the Dirty Duck, when time is called. Her mysterious companion lures her off alone with the promise of hot sex, instead murders her. A town used to stage murders nights at the Globe Theatre, home of Shakespeare, the real murder send Jury to investigating. Right behind him is close friend and ex-peer Melrose plant, with Agatha Ardry in tow gobbling faerycakes all the way - Melrose's American aunt from hell.
Grimes is outrageously funny - in the Brit style - hard to believe she is a Yank. Curry gives perfection in the reading, right down to Bracegirdle's thrill at seeking a wild fling on her vacation only to be the victim. High camp in the land of
Will! Utterly Delightful.
Short And Funny.......2004-04-25
This is one of her shorter stories that can be enjoyed in an afternoon. The meeting of Melrose Plant and Harvey Schoenberg is hysterical! I felt I could see Melrose's brain desperately trying to decode this odd little man's obscure theory of Shakespeare and friends. And yes, some Americans in Europe can be a little overbearing, when left to their own means. I enjoyed it ever so much!
Not as Good as the Others in this Wonderful Series.......2002-03-10
I am puzzled by Martha Grimes' response to Americans in this novel. As an American, albeit one who is writing British mysteries, she comes up with a whole tour full of unsympathetic American tourists here--even down to what I think are supposed to be humerous names for them. I think this is unfortunate, since it weakens the book, which has a plot that could have held up just as well if the characters were less insistantly annoying.
Martha Grimes is one of my favorite writers, and I don't think this novel holds up anywhere near as well as the others in this wonderful series.
Be careful what you wish for.......2002-01-05
I was taking a few days off work (can you call it vacation if you mostly stay home and drive your kids and their friends around?) so I didn't want to read the stack of business books waiting for me. And I didn't feel ready to get back into Tolkien. I told my wife I wanted a mystery that I could read in a couple of days - nothing as cerebral as Holmes, but not a fluff (vacation shouldn't be a total waste). She hands me The Dirty Duck. Yes another really great Detective Superintendent Richard Jury story. A bucket full of interesting (read: quirky, but loveable) characters in a great setting (Stratford-on Avon) - only one of them has this nasty thing about using a razor in a most unconventional way - and then leaving a bit of poetry on the corpses as a signature. And just to add a twist, a little boy who is related to two of the victims is missing. I put Martha Grimes right up there with Christie for character and plot twists any day. If you haven't sampled Martha Grimes yet, you don't know what you are missing.

A fabulous beginner book for a baby/toddler.......2005-03-09
I love love love this series by Kitamura . . . Duck is Dirty and Cat is Sleepy are my favorites of the four books. There is something so completely fresh about Kitamura's style -- the plot is simple but humorous enough and allows a 1+ year old in on the joke. Like some others who have posted, I have bought these books as gifts for friends who have just had babies (fairly safe in the assumption that they don't have them already.) The publisher needs to print more!
She will actually sit through this book.......2003-07-13
Our daughter loves to look at books but she will rarely sit through a whole story. We got this book when she was 14 months old, and at 21 months, she still loves it. The pictures are bright and funny and there are few words on each page. The words that are there are words that she says all the time "Uh-oh", "dirty", "duck", etc. and the story is very easy to understand. I find her in her room all the time "reading" the book because she remembers what words go with what picture.
If she is in a mood to sit down for a few minutes, it is also easy to make the story longer by bringing in other aspects of the pictures or just making up other things about the duck. We now have the whole set, and they are our daughter's favorites - evidenced by the fact that they are the only books she does not chew on because she is too busy reading them!
great first book.......2002-06-17
This is the first book I bought for my daughter when she first started flipping through pages and wanting a story. For months she would say "uh oh" every time I turned a page (this is how three of the pages start) and want me to read it to her over and over again. Definately a good book for 9-14 months.
Kitamura's books got my son reading.......2002-06-01
I've surrounded my son with books since the day he was born but he didn't take much interest. This book finally got his attention. He would pull out ALL the books in his bookshelf until he found 'Duck is Dirty' and wanted it read to him over and over. Eventually, he wanted to read the other 3 books and then blossomed from there. My nephew who was three months older wasn't interested in books either. During a Christmas visit, he ALSO got hooked on 'Duck is Dirty' along with the other Kitamura books. Since then, he loves reading. I highly recommend these books to any new parent.
I LOVE 'EM, MY BABY LOVES 'EM!!!.......2002-03-20
This series is the best! The art is so sweet and cute, and the concept so simple it's frightening! My baby girl, who is 8 months old, just LOVES it when Duck goes "Uh oh!" I will buy this series for all the people I love who have babies.

Book Description
The Scottish Lowlands, October 1789.
A year has come and gone since Jamie McKie fled for his life, arriving at Auchengray in search of sanctuary and a bonny wife. Young Rose McBride, as fair a lass as any in Scotland, dearly loves her handsome cousin—but so does her older sister, Leana.
Determined to have Jamie all to herself, Rose puts in motion one desperate plan after another, enlisting the aid of Lillias Brown, a wise woman—a wutch, some say—still keen on the old ways. Impetuous Rose ignores the cruel whispers that travel up and down the parish hills, never dreaming of the tragic consequences that await her.
Her sister, Leana, clings to her hard-won sense of peace and assurance by a slender thread of faith. Day and night, Leana’s hours are apent caring for wee Ian and praying that her future will hold more promise than her past.
Jamie McKie is busy making his own plans to return home to Glentrool and claim his inheritance. To do so means facing Evan, the brother whose blessing he stole, and Alec, the father whom he ruthlessly deceived. It is a perilous journey that will test the depth of his courage, the strength of his sword, and the tenacity of his vow to honor Almighty God, no matter the cost.

Rose turned into a Weed..........2007-07-13
After reading the first book "Thorn in my Heart", I was so excited to read the rest of the series. I was so sickened by Rose from the first chapter. Her character was terribly self-serving and horrid. I was disgusted by the end of the book with her. I have never felt so strongly about a fictional character before! I found myself sobbing for Leana during her trials. I was very tempted to put the book aside, as it was making me feel such emotions. I am in total agreement with other reviewers who had negative feelings towards Rose. Although she did try to better herself, she continuously made herself out to be a poor, pathetic victim. ICK!! The book in itself was very well written, but I felt myself just wanting the story to end already. There was just entirely too much suffering for Leana in this book.
Highly recommend.......2007-04-01
This book follows A Thorn In My Heart which I loved and quickly ordered the next two in the series. There is no way that the plot can be called predictable and it has such character since it is written around the 18th century in Scotland. If you enjoy Higgs writing or even Irish type stories, then you will love this book. The first book leaves you amazed at the events but this book is not boring and a sudden turn of events keeps the reader guessing and entranced. I give it 5 stars because I couldn't put the first book down once I got going and couldn't wait to buy the second two.
Love this Series!.......2007-03-24
Could not put the entire series down once I started. You have to read all 3!! The author does a wonderful job of translating Scotland to the pages and you can feel the love pour out between the characters.
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a romantic read!
Fair Is the Rose.......2006-08-08
EXCELLENT!!! If you want someone to learn to love to read, I suggest this trillogy by Liz Curtis Higgs.
The Characters Were Off.......2006-07-20
In the Bible, Leah was tricked into sleeping with Jacob by her father, so that he could keep Jacob around to work the flocks for another seven years. Jacob NEVER loved her, there is never any mention of that in the Bible, just that she was the mother to many of his sons. Of course, there was probably a bit of love there, but it was never like his love for Rachel, he loved Rachel the MOST and it was made so clear in the Bible about that. But in this book, he is always declaring his love for Leana, and it makes it seem like he no longer loves Rose. I wanted Rose to just give him up all throughout the book, because she deserved someone SO MUCH BETTER than Jamie...He is a disappointing character in this book, and no one, not even Leana, has a heart! These most recent two books, "Fair is the Rose" and "Whence Came a Prince" were just not as good as the first one was. I hope that the final book in the series is better than both of these have been.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Western Romances!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-18
I usually don't read western romance, I love mostly historiacal romances (especially regency). This is the second book of Ms. McKinney that I have read and I think she is a great writer..one who fully develops her characters and picks an interesting plot.
This being said, this was a GREAT BOOK. Don't even hesitate to buy it.
Christal is running from the law when she gets held hostage at gunpoint. The leader of the gang, Macaulay Cain, is a hard man but she gets glimses of his softer side. She becomes a puzzle to him, an obsession that he cannot shake off. He wants to know why she never talks about her past, never talks about her family. She IS holding in a deep dark secret. She is running from the law because her supposedly killed her parents and ran away from a mental instituiton. The person who is really reponsible for this crime is her uncle, but no one believes her. Therefore, she doesn't want to tell Cain the truth .
The story grabs you even more in the second half, where Cain ends up being a cop who is under cover as an outlaw. After his team catch the bad guys, she runs away. But his obsession of her leads him to follow her all the way to the brottols. He thinks she's prostituting but she really is a dancer. I can't say any more because I don't want to kill the book for the rest of the readers but it is a great books with a lot of funny and interesting plot twists. I can still play out some of the scenes , like a movie. For instance, when the group of outlaws expected him to rape her, he didn't . He took her behind tree and they acted it out. He respected her and took it upon himself to protect her. Also when she was running to him to show how much she loved him, she was throwing her wealthy jewelry to strangers. It was funny how Mckinney depicted this scene. (this scene u probably won't get till you read the book because it is kinda out of context because i don't want to kill the story)/ ENJOY!!
Just Maybe Her Best.......2004-04-04
Wow. Very well done story.
It always bugs me a bit when someone is ready to die of love 24 hrs after meeting. In this story the chemistry is almost immediate but the relationship is very believable. The storyline is unique and engaging and just a great romance.
Definitely one of Meagan's best, on a scale with Penelope Williamson, who holds #1 in my heart right now for great romance-writing for grown-ups.
Fair is the Rose by Meagan McKinney (is more than Fair).......2000-08-08
Action packed, mysterious heroine, sullen and brooding but confident gunslinging special agent hero, and a 'whole pasel of outlaws and villains' make this 1875 western a real winner!
Christalbel Van Alen has escaped a mental institute and is being pursued by a relative who wants her dead! She, the only witness to a murder, disguises herself as a widow and is traveling to find the smallest ghost town in the west to create a new life for herself. However, her dreams are disturbed when her stagecoach is captured by outlaws and the prisoners are taken captive for ransom.
There Christal comes face to face with a real life gunfighter, an enemy whom also becomes her saviour. MacCauley Cain.
But Christal runs again when she feels threatened of her past being discovered and true to life, her past finds her. If you enjoy outlaws, gunslingers, bounty hunters, saloon girls and cowbows (the genre) and mysterious heroines or heroes, then you'll love Fair is the Rose. Fair is the Rose keeps you turning page after page and on the edge of your seat.
Personal note: I admit I own tons of Meagan McKinney's novels purchased from 'dime stores' and have never read any, until I read 'Fair is the Rose' and I began searching through my hundreds of romance novels to find ALL of McKinney's writings. She quickly became one of my favorites. But one thing I noticed in 'Fair is the Rose', the heroine never bathed! Talk about scent of a woman!
A BOOK THAT WILL TAKE YOU AWAY.......1999-10-07
From the synopsis, the book may sound sappy, but it isn't. The hijacking and the events that took place left you breathless, and when they find each other again -quite interesting. I didn't give it 5 stars because the ending could of been better.
Overall, if you want a book that takes you back to the 1800's, with a runaway, murder, and some outlaws thrown in, this book is for you.

wonderful Americana romance.......2002-01-23
In 1887, William "Buffalo Bill" Cody hires Rose Ellen Gilhooey as a trick rider in his Wild West show. Though not as famous as her pal Annie Oakley, six years later Rose still performs at Mr. Cody's show as The Wild West troupe works the Colombian Exposition of the Chicago World's Fair. Covering the World's Fair to include Buffalo Bill's Wild West show are local reporters Horatio Lambert "H.L." May and Sam Trimble.
The two journalists look forward to seeing the two female stars of Buffalo Bill's extravaganta. After meeting Annie and Rose, H.L. decides to do a story on the less famous woman who rides as well as any Indian. As he follows her for his story, Rose and H.L. fall in love. He rejects his feelings so that the chances of sharing what Frank Butler and Annie have seem remote.
The first tale in Alice Duncan's "Meet Me at the Fair", COMING UP ROSES, is a wonderful Americana romance that though placed in a different city echoes the delight of the movie Meet Me In St. Louis. The perspicacious story line is fun enabling the audience to acquire an impression of the American Gay Nineties while also providing a warm romance. Rose is an engaging character refusing to bury her country roots, but it is H.L. who steals the show by fleeing his small town Twain-like heritage for a Windy City persona. Ms. Duncan provides a delightful historical romance that will provide this rising star with a horde of new admirers.

An Important Little Book About an Important Subject.......2001-06-28
Although this book is only 20 pages long, it contains helpful information about the concept of fair trade. Americans have so much, and it is hard for us to imagine the degree of poverty in other third-world countries. Rose Ericson begins to introduce the subject of what fair trade means to these nations. To us it is only a $1 sometimes, but that $1 in a poor nation can supply food for a day to an entire family. In our hurry to accumulate material goods, we must be careful to not take advantage of the artisans and producers of these third-world nations. Fair trade is a concept whose time has come.
