Book Description
The stolid landscape of Chicago suddenly turns dreamlike and otherworldly in Stuart Dybek's classic story collection. A child's collection of bottle caps becomes the tombstones of a graveyard. A lowly rightfielder's inexplicable death turns him into a martyr to baseball. Strains of Chopin floating down the tenement airshaft are transformed into a mysterious anthem of loss. Combining homely detail and heartbreakingly familiar voices with grand leaps of imagination, The Coast of Chicago is a masterpiece from one of America's most highly regarded writers.

Geunine Stories of Real Chicago People.......2006-02-25
I have read all of Stuart Dybek's books and have even had the privilege of having lunch with him and discussing his works. Being of Polish descent, I have lived in the neighborhoods that he describes. All of his books accurately depict real Southside Chicago people and their histories, their hardships, their heartaches, their woes and their lifestyles. I read his stories and I am transported back 20 years to my childhood neighborhood. I am always overcome with a feeling of nostaglia after I finish one of his books.
A Stellar Talent.......2005-01-15
You would have to search long and hard to find stories anywhere with this originality and beauty. They will stop you in your tracks. Dybek has staked out a territory purely his own, the lost and dispossessed of Polish Chicago. Chicago has proudly produced Dreiser, Norris, Algren, Levin, Bellow and Farrell--and now Dybek. His work is enduring, funny, incisive and unforgettable.
Capturing the essence of Chicago.......2004-03-23
It is only fitting that this collection of 14 short stories was chosen for the One Book - One Chicago program hosted by The Chicago Public Library this spring. What a better way to promote communal reading in Chicago than to sponsor a book about life in their own city. While reading each short story it is apparent that Stuart Dybek has an intimate knowledge of Chicago. He successfully uses his memories and fondness for the city from his childhood of growing up in the Little Village and Pilsen neighborhoods during the mid-20th century. Each short story details with the passage of time and what it means to live in Chicago. A sense of place is an important factor running throughout each story and successfully unites each story into this collection. The story that resonates the most for me is "Chopin in Winter" about one boy who is immensely affected by an upstairs neighbor who plays the piano each night. The portrayal of the grandfather Dzia-Dzia and his relationship with the principle character are noteworthy and memorable. THE COAST OF CHICAGO is a wonderful collection of short stories that will remain in a special spot on my bookshelves for enjoyment for years to come. I love living in Chicago; and these stories resonated strongly with me. Highly recommended.
Highest recommendation........1998-07-28
Lovely stories that take place in the intersection of dream and waking life, stories you'll want to read again and again from one of the most original and lyrical writers working today.
'Pet Milk' does a body good.......1998-07-10
Stuart Dybek is truly a gifted writer. But moving beyond my humble opinion, this unique collection of short stories shines. Dybek's prose is haunting, his language at times startling and spare, at others languid and nearly musical. His characters are alive and absolutely believable in their mistakes and victories. Each story stands as a reflection on everyday beauty; Dybek that takes time to notice the details other authors overlook or dismiss as mundane. In 'The Coast of Chicago' Stuart Dybek has managed to do something quite rare in the all-too self-conscious realm of short story writing-- create stories that are rich yet still real without trying too hard to be so. Allow yourself to get sucked up into the twisting paths of his Chicago-- it's a journey you won't regret.
Book Description
In the flourishing ancient Indian communities of the American Southwest and northwest Mexico, master potters created ceramic arts that are considered among the most accomplished in the world. The symbolic imagery and distinctive local styles of the region are unmistakable—simple volumetric shapes covered with complex, interlocking geometrical designs that are sometimes combined with bold abstract animal, human, and composite figures. Within this shared tradition are clearly identifiable local styles and symbolic vocabularies, and this lavishly illustrated book focuses on one of them: the ceramic works of the Casas Grandes-Paquimé area of northwest Mexico and adjoining parts of New Mexico and Arizona, c. A.D. 1200–1400.
For the first time on a comprehensive scale, expert art historians and an artist-teacher discuss the complex imagery of approximately ninety Casas Grandes vessels with fifty pieces representing other major styles of the Greater Southwest. Superb examples show polychromatic designs of real and mythological animals, together with abstract human figures and remarkably varied geometries, demonstrating the imaginative complexity and exceptional achievement of the Casas Grandes potters. Certain motifs reflect affinities with distant Mesoamerica, yet the authors show that these forms were absorbed into a visual vocabulary that reflected the unique artistic and cosmological outlook of Casas Grandes, within the native Southwestern cultural tradition.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Hardy House
ASIN: 0226492745 |
Book Description
Situated in Chicago's famed Gold Coast, just north of the Magnificent Mile, the Charnley house is one of the finest dwellings in the city and considered worldwide to be a stunning example of avant-garde architecture. Now the headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998, the house was built in 1892 at a critical moment in urban and architectural history. The Charnley House is the first authoritative publication on the building, which has long been discussed in surveys but never before examined in detail.
In this collection of original essays, six well-known architectural historians illuminate various aspects of the house, both inside and out, as they consider its remarkable formal and spatial qualities, its historical significance in the development of Chicago's elite residential neighborhood, and its place in the context of American domestic architecture. Equally important, the contributors tackle the knotty, decades-old issue concerning the building's designer. While many have ascribed the scheme to Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan's chief assistant at the time, this book sheds new light on how the house relates significantly to the work of both master and apprentice.
The continuing debate over the house's "authorship" highlights the importance of the Charnley house in the history of modern architecture as the seminal work of residential design in the United States. These thoroughly researched interpretations, supplemented by an abundance of never before published illustrations, analyze this house of distinction with the care and detail it deserves. Beautifully restored in late 1980s, the Charnley house now has a book worthy of it.
Book Description
"This is a book about Chicago. It is also, and for that very reason, a book about every other American city which has lived long enough and grown large enough to experience the transformation of neighborhoods and the contact of cultures and the tension between different types of individual and community behavior. . . . Here is a type of sociological investigation which is equally marked by human interest and scientific method."—Christian Century

A Classic Study.......2000-07-16
The Gold Coast and the Slum is one of the classic studies of the Chicago School of urban sociology. In that sense, it has been largely superceded by more sophisticated analyses in the intervening decades, yet in terms of readability and flair it is very difficult to think of a better introduction to the world of urban studies. Today, in fact, it reads more like a work of literature than a sociological study--but in a time in which the relative fortunes of sociology are on the decline and the fortunes of literary study are on the rise, it may have more to say now than it did even at the time of its first publication. When one considers the rise of what are now called "edge cities," those odd conglomerations of city and suburbia, whose major products are often far more closely related to the fantastic and the imaginary than to the tangible products of standard urban industrialism, perhaps a method which owes more to literary study than to the quantifying methods sociology has developed since the decline of the Chicago School is more appropriate. In that sense, The Gold Coast and the Slum may deserve a fresh look.

Love Your Neighbor in Action.......2000-04-02
Chicago's Fourth Presbyterian Church bucks several trends: it is a successful church in an urban setting; its affluent members are involved in hands-on help with people in a nearby ghetto; it espouses a decidedly liberal theology. Wellman seeks to explain how Fourth Presbyterian has both accommodated to and transformed culture.
Wellman studies the ministries of Fourth Church's four 20th century pastors. Each pastor ministered to an affluent congregation and addressed the social issues that kept near neighbors of the church in poverty. Each pastor was able to rally the members of the congregation to take action on behalf of the less-privileged.
Wellman combines historical investigation and sociological analysis to explain Fourth Presbyterian's success. The book is a revised Ph.D. dissertation but doesn't read like one. Wellman writes in a fluid, engaging style and keeps the academic excursions into sociological theory to a minimum.
This book will be a welcome read for a) folks who love Chicago; b) people who worship in urban churches; c) liberal Christians who wonder if they are any others left on the planet; d) cultural historians; e) folks who wonder if the church still cares for others.

Good Book.......2007-07-22
This was a good book. But I isn't as good as most of her other books I've read.
Leave a Candle Burning.......2007-06-27
I know this the last book of the Tucker Mills Trilogy. I have read the whole series, and enjoyed it a great deal.
I would recommend this trilogy to all.
Conclusion in the Tucker Mills trilogy.......2007-01-23
Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (1/07)
Dannan MacKay is the young physician who has come to town to take over his uncle's former practice. Doc MacKay was thought of highly by all the townsfolk before his retirement, and Dannan is warmly welcomed by the town, the church family, and by all those he treats. Dannan is comfortable and confident of his new life until he is accidentally smacked in the face with a shovel by the lovely Scottie Peterson. Dannan is quite taken by Scottie and believes he may be in love until he learns Scottie is married and the wife of the bedridden Eli Peterson.
Dannan struggles with his feelings for the happily married Scottie and tries to quiet his heart. To keep his mind focused, Dannan puts all his efforts into treating his beloved patients, until a tragedy occurs and Dannan soon finds himself trying to be a surrogate father to a lovable but frightened three-year old named Corina, daughter of his cousin Grant. How can a single physician meet all the needs of an orphaned child? Dannan seeks the help and support of the town he now calls home. Corina instantly wins the hearts of all who meet her, except for Scottie Peterson who desperately tries to keep her distance and remain at arms' length. To find solace and guidance, Dannan turns to seeking God's will and to conversing with Eli, even when he lies on his deathbed.
"Leave a Candle Burning" is about trusting God and accepting His will for our lives. It is about knowing God is in control and has a perfect plan for each of us. It reveals the joy that comes to those who obey and believe. "Leave a Candle Burning" will pull at your heart.
I have enjoyed almost everything I have ever read by Lori Wick, and I was not disappointed with "Leave a Candle Burning." It is of the similar high quality I have come to expect from this proven author. And even though I have not read the other books in this particular trilogy, I had no problem following the story. If you too enjoy Christian Romance, I recommend this current selection without reservation. If you are a fan of Lori Wick, this is a must read. This book is appropriate for all ages and genders.
Very annoying and predictable.......2007-01-06
This was the worst Lori Wick book I've read. I was very disappointed with the writing style and the predictability of the plot. It was extremely annoying that EVERY time Dannon walks in on Scottie playing or reading with the little girl, he says "Now this looks fun." This phrase becomes very awkward and stilted from overuse. There are many other ways he could've broken into their conversation without saying the same thing over and over again. I would recommend Ms. Wick's older novels, The Kensington Chronicles and The Princess over this newer series.
A nice story.......2006-09-25
I liked the plot line of this book more than I did the others in this trilogy; it appealed to me more. I really really liked Dannon and how, when he is faced with having feelings for a woman who is unavailable, he confesses them to God and asks for help in overcoming them. His cousin's little girl, who he adopts when she becomes orpahned, is really sweet.
What I didn't like was how the author kept jumping around to other characters in the town. It was a bit confusing to me and I felt that they detracted from the main story a bit. While mentioning what went on in Scottie's hosehold was understandable, I really did not need to or want to know about what was going on in everyone else's households and how they all felt over someone's broken arm.
I also felt that the ending was way too rushed and I did not care for the epiolouge at all. I didn't feel that it was really necessary to the story; it just seemed to add characters who either had nothing to do with the story or very little to do with it.
