Book Description
It was Felix Hamilton who named it the Birdcage--the tall house in Bristol where Miss Pidgeon lives with her tenants, the beautiful and talented actress Angel Blake and Angel's daughter, Lizzie. Lizzie longed for a father, but Felix knew that ultimately he would have to remain with his own son, Piers, at the gracious, mellow Michaelgarth, the family home on the edge of Exmoor.
Many years later, Lizzie comes at last to Michaelgarth and meets Piers for the first time. There she finds a family in trouble--and miraculously, they need her to help them heal.
Written with shining honesty and compassion, The Birdcage has every bit of the wonder that Marcia Willett's fans have come to expect.

Outstanding writing. Compelling characters. Great plot........2006-12-23
This is the first novel I have read by this author. What a find! Marcia Willett is an outstanding English author. Her prose is so far above the average contemporary writer, that the critics seem to compare her to. Moving, and deep, this is a story that will linger on your mind for months after you finish this book. I hated to finish the last page and leave these characters. I could see and feel the English countryside.
This is a must read.
I will immediately buy more books from this author and will look forward to any new books in the future.
Simply Marvelous.......2005-11-14
If you have not yet discovered Marcia Willett, I urge you to pick up this book, you have a major treat in store. Reminiscent of Rosamunde Pilcher and Maeve Binchy but very much her own woman, Willett writes painstakingly and lovingly of everyday lives that are anything but ordinary.
"The Birdcage" spans two generations of very nice people caught up in circumstances that have far-reaching repercussions. It begins in the 50s, in the loveless marriage of Felix and Marina, whose only thing in common is their precocious young son Piers. Marina is a stiff, unyielding woman who stifles her natural adoration of her husband and son beneath a strict, mean exterior that manifests itself in insane jealousy of Felix, and overbearing discipline toward Piers.
When Felix meets lovely, fey, bubbly Angel, a beautiful actress who lives with her roommate Pidge and young daughter Lizzie in a charming house they have named "The Birdcage," the outcome is inevitable. For years, Felix travels on business to Bristol, where he shares a joyous and lively life with the Birdcage household. Angel is his mistress and their love is unchanging. Until Angel pushes the envelope and tragedy ensues.
Fast forward 40 years. Felix is an elderly and frail man; Piers a divorced adult; and Angel and Pidge are long gone. It takes about two chapters to sort out all the new people and figure out their relationships to one another and to the people of the past, and that is the only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. But no matter. In an enchanting second half, Lizzie, now grown and an actress on her own, comes back to find Felix--and to ground herself with some understanding of her past. It's a beautiful story that can stand on its own, but when the past meets the present and old wounds are opened and then healed, it makes for a simply lovely story.
Highly recommended.
Well Done.......2005-09-24
I've always wondered what I would do without Rosamunde Pilcher to soothe my reading mind....now it seems that Marcia Willet is a good...I don't want to say substitute, because no-one can replace RP, but she comes VERY close!
This is a good read - I enjoyed it. The flow is great, the characters are well done and it is enough to encourage me to read another of MW's books. If I had to use one word I would use
SOOTHING. Well done Marcia! thanks!
Cozy English Tale of Heartbreak and Healing.......2005-08-25
Marcia Willett delivers another wonderfully romantic tale set on the English coast. From the tall house in Bristol, nicknamed the Birdcage, to the lush setting in Exmoor, this story plays out in an enchanting, multi-generational saga that will leave her fans, and all fans of women's fiction, deeply satisfied.
Angela Blake is the passionate actress who falls in love with Felx Hamilton. He comes to love the life Angela, her daughter Lizzie, and their housemate Pidge live and becomes a vital part of that life. Lizzie longs for him to be the father she never knew, but Felix has other obligations. He has a family in Exmoor, a wife he no longer loves but a beloved son, Piers, who he cannot forsake. Or can he? Which life will Felix choose and what will be the repercussions for him and the next generation?
The story plays out in two time frames: the 1950's when Angela and Felix first meet, and later in the 1990's when the fall-out from their love affair must be dealt with. This is, above all, Lizzie's story as she seeks to connect the past and the present in order to face her uncertain future.
Rich with the local color of her beloved England, warm with characters you come to love, and heartrending in its plot, this is another five-star read from Marcia Willett.
deep relationship drama .......2005-08-03
In 1956 Dunster, though married to Marina and raising a son Piers together, Felix is unhappy with his loveless life though he loves his son. He meets Angelina when he attends the theater as she is performing on the stage. They begin a tryst as he visits her often at the Birdcage. He is falling in love with his Angel and cherishes her delightful young daughter Lizzie, who thinks Felix is the dad she never met. When Marina learns about her husband's infidelity, she forces him to decide between his second family and his son.
Four decades later, a grieving Lizzie, whose mom just died, needs to understand why Felix abruptly dumped them. When she catches up to the man who was so kind to a girl that needed attention, she hides the truth that she is married to a philanderer. Felix is happy to see Lizzie and introduces her to Piers. With Lizzie as the catalyst the estranged relationship between father and son heals, but she knows she lives a lie from the two men she cares so much about.
The vital element in this deep relationship drama is the significant cast members seem genuine whether it is the 1950s or the 1990s. The story line focuses on the characters especially Felix in the first half and Piers and Lizzie in the latter segment of this profound drama. Readers will emphasize with Felix as he chooses his beloved son which means Marina over his treasured Angel and her dearly loved daughter. Fans will be pleased with this strong family drama starring wonderful fully developed protagonists regardless of the decades that the subplots occur.

#1, 5 and 9 in Hawk's Way Series...Good Buy For Fans, 3 Emotioanlly Charged Stories.......2007-06-05
Hawk's Way Rogues : "Honey and the Hired Hand", "The Cowboy Takes A Wife", and "The Temporary Groom"
If you are already a fan of Joan Johnston's Romance, Western Adventure and Historical novels, you are probably aware that there are several different series of stories to get caught up in, featuring different families, their adventures, their romances and sometimes feuds."Hawk's Way Rogues" is a 3 in 1 book and has #'s 1, 5 and 9 in the Hawk's Way Series", modern day western romance/adventure novellas centering on the Whitelaw family. These combo books are probably the best way to go for collectors and some(including this one) have the family tree, and book order inside the book which is a great help in following the family through the generations. For individual purchase of these and other stories in the series, click on the title link I have provided throughout the review.
If you weren't a fan before,Honey and the Hired Hand(#1), will have you hooked, especially if you love a steamy romance! The story of Honey Farrell and Jessie Whitelaw is a fabulous romance and promises a great series to follow.
Honey is the widow of a Texas Ranger. Trying to run her ranch, and raise two boys, one already a teen, on her own, is too much for her to handle alone. Enter Jessie Whitelaw, who talks his way into the job of helping her run the Flying Diamond. Although the beautiful Honey is hesitant, there is something about the rugged cowhand that draws her to him. He's Hired! Each trying to keep their distance for their own reasons, Honey, not wanting to get involved with a drifter, knowing she will be hurt when he moves on, and Jessie has ulterior motives for being there, knows he will be moving on and knows he can't get involved with the luscious Honey. But of course, we know these two will fall into each other's arms eventually. Johnston keeps the anticipation going with tantalizing circumstances between the two, and when they finally can't resist each other anymore, the romance sizzles with steamy scenes.
As always in a Joan Johnston novel, there is much more to the story. There is always some sort of adventure, mystery or conspiracy going on. Honey has been losing her cattle to rustlers. She hopes her new hired hand can help her stop the thieves. But when her prize bull turns up missing, along with her 13 year old son(who wasn't all too happy about Jessie being there in the first place), the evidence points towards Jessie. Can he be the culprit? Or has he hired on for another reason. Will her son turn up safe and sound? Can Honey resist Jessie even when she thinks he's the bad guy?
There was only one part of the story, I found a little hard to swallow. As a mother, there is no way, even if involved in a passionate affair, you would wait 24 hours to check on your 13 year old child, who is supposedly staying at a friends. But hey, as the reader, I wouldn't have wanted that delicious love scene cut short though!
Johnston keep the pace moving right along. The reader keeps turning the page to see what happens. I thought it was a great start to the Hawks Way series. Follow this one up withRancher And The Runaway Bride (Silhouette Desire, No 779). Johnston is real good at having one story flow to the next in all the series.
Cowboy Takes A Wife (Hawk'S Way) (Silhouette Desire, No 842) is # 5 in the line up, and it is the first one that branches out to family members other then the core Whitelaw siblings. It also should not be confused with another romance by the same title by Lois Faye Dyer. If you have been following the series, you may remember briefly meeting Carter Prescott, as Faron Whitelaw's half brother in 3rd in the series,Cowboy And The Princess (Silhouette Desire, No 785) . Ms Johnston, gives enough background and interaction with the Whitelaw's, so that this book stand on it's own.
Joan Johnston is amazing as she always matches up two wonderful characters, that seem made for each other, while still keeping the plot interesting and fresh. In this one Desiree Parrish and her little daughter Nicole are in danger. Carter Prescott is looking for a place to set down roots and call his own. Desiree owns a ranch and needs a husband for protection. She carries the scars, physically and mentally of an abusive relationship and has no hopes for a future relationship. Offering Carter a place to call his own,in desperation she proposes to him, a man she met once in her childhood and hardly knows. So hardly knowing each other, but each with their own reasons, and each with the scars and secrets of the past, they marry. Desiree who never thought she could let another man touch her, or make a man happy in the bedroom discovers new feelings with this man who treats her so tenderly. Carter too, starts to fall for Desiree, can hardly keep from spending every waking minute with her, and also learns to care for Nicole as well. These two strangers learn about each other's past and the marriage becomes one much more than one of convenience .There's danger brewing though, in the form of Desiree's maniac of an ex-husband.
There is much to overcome and Johnston keeps the reader turning the pages, as this multi-faceted story unfolds at a great pace in this romantic and suspenseful novella. A very good entry and something a little different from the rest in the Hawk's Way series. Next up is Unforgiving Bride (Hawk'S Way) (Silhouette Desire, No 878),which start of the next generation of Whitelaw kids' stories.
Book #'s 2, 3 and 4, make up the Hawk'S Way Bachelors (Trade Paperback) (Silhouette Promo) 3 in 1 book.
Temporary Groom (Hawk'S Way) (Silhouette Desire, No 1004) is #9 in Joan Johnston's Hawk's Way series of romance novella's revolving around Whitelaw family. This one is the start of the third generation, the grandchildren of Garth and Candy Whitelaw who's story is told in novella #4 Wrangler And The Rich Girl (Silhouette Desire, No 791).
The Whitelaw kids of all generations, although eventual pillars of the community, have through each generation been a bit on the wild side and have been tagged 'The Whitelaw Brats'. Cherry Whitelaw, one of 8 adopted kids by Zach and Rebecca(Disobedient Bride (Man Of The Month, Hawk'S Way) (Silhouette Desire No 937)), has had a troubled past, has built a wall around herself when it comes to love, and just can't seem to stay out of trouble. Even when it's not her fault, blame seems to find her. Just as she is ready to graduate from high school, she is suspended and kept from graduation and berates herself for having failed her loving adoptive parents once more.
Neighbor Billy Stonecreek has problems and a reputation for being bad aw well. having lost his wife in an auto accident only a year before, trying to raise his 6 year old twin daughters and work his ranch on his own, the anger within him grows and can't seem to stay out of fights. His ex-mother-in-law, a vile woman, is preparing a law suite to take his children away from him.
When these two meet, both licking their wounds from the night's events, they find they each have something to offer the other. Cherry wants to get away somewhere where she can prove herself worthy of her family and Billy needs a mother for his children to show the courts he is providing a good home for his children. So they form a temporary alliance and what else?..they get married. But can these two "bad" influences prove they are fit for raising a family? And can they do it without losing their hearts to each other, and in Cherry's case to the little girls who want no part of their new "step-mother".
It's a touching and poignant story, and will be especially relatable to adoptive parents and children, and those "new" parents who may have found themselves with an "instant" step family. Ms. Johnston really pulls the emotional strings in this one. You can't help but find yourself rooting for this new family to make it,for Cherry and Billy to open their hearts, and also to turn the temporary situation into a permanent one. And of course, it wouldn't be a Johnston novel without some very intimate romantic moments as well.
It's a wonderful and fast read that I found hard to put down, and it is not necessary to have read any of the others in the series to get involved in this one.Next up in the series isVirgin Groom (Hawk'S Way). I'll review it as soon as I read it.
You can find more of Joan Johnston's series and full length novels, and the order they should be read by clicking onto my So You'd Like To Guide of the series and their order through my profile page.
Individually I gave 2 of these 4 stars and one(The Temporary Groom") 5 stars, but going with 5 stars for the three together in this economical 3 pack.
Enjoy the read.....Laurie
Pleasant read.......2006-12-25
I found three high interest stories within Hawk's Way Rogues.
With Honey and the Hired Hand and The Cowboy Takes A Wife, there are two very strong women and men who are unusually steadfast in their way until they find Honey and Desiree respectively. In The Temporary Groom, both Billy Stonecreek and Cherry Whitelaw are impulsive characters, which leads them into all sorts of collective trouble.
While Honey and the Hired Hand felt like a plot line that has been repeatedly revisited (widow falls for hired help), its intent did not detract from the purpose of Honey's reluctance or grief for her late husband.
In The Cowboy Takes A Wife, Desiree is a much more desperate woman to Carter Prescott, but he too keeps deep secrets about his past. As Carter heals himself, he finds his love with Desiree something he knew he had yet to experience in his past.
I had a harder time believing in The Temporary Groom that a man would believe that marrying a 18-year-old high school drop out would be the solution to all his problems. But in the end, the real truth of family's love, forgiveness, and inner strength reigns.
In addition to these stories, inside this edition of Hawk's Way is a family tree to help you sort out the complex family of Hawk's Way Ranches. This family tree links the stories and the anthologies also written by Joan Johnston.

Fun, sexy and exciting. Lots of romantic tension. Liked it as uch as "Anything, My Love" by Cynthia Simmons and "New Mexico sunrise" by Peterson.

Life long friends find themselves falling in love........2001-08-22
My favorite kind of love story is when two people who have been friends for an extended period find themselves falling in love with each other, or discover that they have been in love all this time and in denial about it. Hawk's Way: The Virgin Groom is just such a tale.
Mac Macready met Jewel Whitelaw while attending Camp LittleHawk, a camp for children with cancer and other illnesses, when they were children. An intense friendship was formed that the passage of time, failed relationships with others, and painful injuries (to both body and spirit) has not weakened. When Mac is faced with a career ending injury he returns to the soothing comfort of the Hawk Ranch and his friendship with Jewel. But times and, more importantly, feelings have changed. Though neither Mac or Jewel want to destroy their friendship, both cannot deny the attraction they feel for one another. Things get even more sticky when they discover the feelings are mutual. And there is that painful trauma in Jewel's past that needs help being overcome. A deceptively brisk read that packs a bigger emotional punch than you would expect. Recommended.
:).......2001-02-16
Jewel Whitelaw was first introduced to us in her adopted parents book, Zach and Rebecca Whitelaw in The Disobediant Bride. Jewel was in an accident in that book that left her without a family, scars on her face and parts of her body, and a limp. Rebecca and Zach fell in love with her and was one of the first of many children that they adopted. In this book we learn that Jewel has suffered even more as she grew up. In her sister Cherry's book, The Temporary Groom we learn that Jewel was attacked by a boy as a teenager, but what we learn in this book was how brutal that attack was and that the one person that knows her secret is her long time best friend Mac.
Readers of the Hawk's Way series will remember Mac by his given first name Pete. Pete was one of the sick kids that came to Camp LittleHawk in The Disobediant Bride. Mac as he is now called is a great big football hero with a career ending injury. Mac comes back to Hawk's Pride to 'recover' because he is sure he will play again. Mac also wants to spend time with his best friend Jewel.
Mac learns that Jewel has still not recovered from the attack. Jewel will not let any man near her, but is somehow comfortable with Mac. Jewel hopes Mac can help her overcome her anxiety around men, you know as a 'friendly' favor. Mac wants to help Jewel, but is afraid that she will find out his horrible secret-this stong football hero is also a virgin.
It is a wonderful story and it is great to see Jewel and Mac help each other in lots of different ways. So many questions are raised. Can Jewel help Mac realize his football career is over? Can Mac help Jewel get over her anxiety of men? That is just the tip of the iceberg when they both realize that they have feelings for one another.
This is a great addition to the Hawk's Way series. I was disappointed that this book along with Cherry's story did not include more of the rest of the Whitelaw family. It is still a great read.
Another great Hawk's Way book.......1998-07-28

#9 in Hawk's Way..Especially Meaningful For Adoptive and New Step Moms.......2007-06-05
"The Temporary Groom" is #9 in Joan Johnston's Hawk's Way series of romance novella's revolving around Whitelaw family. :).......2001-02-16
This book from the Hawk's Way series is about Cherry Whitelaw, the last adopted child of Zach and Rebecca Whitelaw (from the book The Disobediant Bride). Like all the other sets of siblings in the Hawk's Way series Zach and Rebecca's children are known in Texas as the Whitelaw brats. Cherry always seems to be getting in trouble. She hates to see the hurt and disappointment that she causes her parents, so when she gets expelled from school and almost attacked by her date she decides she does not want to go home.
Fortunately, Billy Stonecreek saves her from her would be attacker and offers to save her from her parents, by marrying her. Billy is also known for his bad reputation, and his mother-in-law plans to use it to take away his twin daughters. Billy needs a wife and Cherry thinks she needs some place to go other than her parents, so they marry.
If you have read any of the Hawk's Way series than you know that the Whitelaw men have tempers. Cherry's dad Zach is no exception. Zach is furious and tries to persuade Cherry to come home. But, Cherry is determined to be a good wife and mother. The ending is really good. I would have liked to have heard about more of the Whitelaws from the other books and I really missed the labor day picnic that always occurs in every book, except this one. It is still a great book to add to all the other Hawk's Way books.

A hero to die for! And a lady who deserves him........2004-02-03
This was a wonderful story as noted by other reviewers. It's part of a 12 books Hawk's Way Series and I really enjoy the character overflow. Although they stand alone, I think its better to start with the earlier ones and read them in order.
For example Jake and Hope's story is in "sisters found" and it's odd to read about their "early days" afer the fact. Anyhow. Joan Johnston has a way with words. Her characters have depth, likeability and somehow you're always rooting for them. However don't expect the thick gothic type books. These are quick reads but have some explicit sex and raw emotion.
This is our way of joining the Whitelaw Family!.......1998-09-05
Another great book by Joan Johnston! I just loved Colt to pieces! I was so glad to read about Jenny and Colt. Thank heavens, after all those years, she ended up with the right guy! You ached for Colt and his feelings for Jenny. It was hard to put this book down. The various characters in the book reach out and grab you too. Easy to see that books can follow about Jenny's brother, Randy with Faith and Colt's big brother Jack and Hope! At least we HOPE so. The Whitelaw's are such an exceptional family, by reading the books, you can be a part of the family, at least for awhile. And, Joan usually brings in some imperfection which is unusual, but more normal than the drop-dead gorgeous heroine! This is a reality check that many readers can relate to. Thanks Joan for entertaining us so well with another great read!
Good book, hard to put down once you start reading it........1998-08-31
The story line was very good and have always enjoyed the Whitelaw's stories. It shows that live is not always easy and happy, but when two people really love each other, they can face anything. I am anxious for the next storries of Randy, Faith, Hope and Jake.
Well written.......1998-08-16
Another great book in her Hawk's Way series. Go out and find the others. You won't regret it. :)
One of her best yet!!!!.......1998-08-07
Highly anticipated continuation of the Whitelaw family. Like the other books, I could not put it down. Colt and Jenny are two characters that will warm your heart. Since they were kids, they were meant to be together. Cannot wait to find out about Jake and Randy and their potential romances in another book. Hope that book(s) is coming soon.
