Book Description
When her son's Chasidic babysitter vanishes, public defender turned stay-at-home mom Juliet Applebaum travels from her havoc-filled home in Los Angeles to a Chasidic enclave in Brooklyn. In search of answers. In pursuit of justice. And in desperate need of a big, long nap.
"Waldman is a master of smart, snappy repartee." (Kirkus Reviews)
Customer Reviews:
The best of her books.......2006-09-04
Waldman has an easy way with words, and she seemed to hit her stride in this book. There are a few eye-rolling moments when even my quite liberal suspension of disbelief gene was twanging with outrage (Juliet thinks the Hasidic 18-year-old, looks-like-a-young-Liz-Taylor, reminds her of herself???), but I'm willing to overlook those in favor of a fairly seamless plotline and fun, lively characters.
Strong Second Mystery.......2004-06-20
Stay at home mom Juliet Applebaum is struggling to adjust to the birth of her second child, especially since 4 month old Isaac hardly sleeps at all. She finally hires a young Chasidic girl from her neighborhood to baby sit for a couple hours each day. But after the first day, the girl vanishes. Against all reason, Juliet finds herself drawn to find this young woman, especially after her parents refuse to call the police. But what could make her run away? And can Juliet find her while juggling an infant, pre-school, and her husband's strange work schedule?
I enjoyed the first book in this series but felt it had some flaws. This book was much stronger and the same flaws didn't plague this book. It has a fun sense of humor, and while I felt Juliet complained a bit too much at times, I appreciated her love for her family which still came through. The plot is better developed here, although why this woman would search for this girl is beyond me. Even Juliet acknowledges that it doesn't make much sense.
I'm glad I've been collecting the paperbacks as they've come out. I won't wait so long to revisit Juliet and her family.
Misinformed.......2004-01-30
Ayelet Waldman certainly seems to hold promise as a writer, but first she must learn to check her facts. The entire plot of this book is based on the most ridiculous stereotypes and misconceptions about the Hasidic Jewish community. As someone raised without much Jewish knowledge at all, then adopted an Orthodox Hasidic life as an adult, I feel I can and must caution readers. While the questions and concerns voiced by the book's protaganist, Juliet, are thoughtful and valid, Waldman's answers sadly are not. Among these: That Hasidic women are forced to marry. That a girl's thoughts and feelings are, as a rule, not taked into account. That men "rule" and women merely "comply". That Freydel's father, an important leader, would DARE to treat someone like Juliet with such arrogance, distrust and hostility as described here, and get away with it! The list goes on.... PLEASE do not use this book as an insight into Hasidic Jewish life. A wonderful academic (and readable) book has just been published and is respected very much by "both sides"--Hasidic people and others: Mystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers: An Intimate Journey Among Hasidic Girls by Stephanie Wellen Levine, Carol Gilligan (Hardcover - November 2003). Your money (and curiosity!) would be better spent here.
Adorable and fun.......2003-12-09
The other reviews give you a fairly good taste of the plot, so I'll not bore you with that. I came to this book from the other side of things -- while I've never been a mystery reader, I'm a nursing mommy, so of course I was immediately attracted to Juliet, who nurses, mothers and sleuths with wit and style, despite the occasional sleep-deprived faux pas (like opening the door for the Fed Ex man wearing nothing from the waist up but a nursing bra with the flaps open).
This is tasty, fun stuff, a fast-paced quick read with a surprise ending. Just the thing for a mommy who's trying to actually read a book despite the infant and the toddler snapping at her heels.
Whodunnit !.......2003-08-01
This book caught my eye because it somwhat delves into the Chasidic communities of L.A and New York. The book was a fast moving, light read. I did find myself compelled to read on to find out who killed the young Chasidic babysitter. My only complaint is I agree some other reviewers, most of it was unbelievable ( all the characters were SO willing to help our sleuth out, all detectives should be so lucky) and the ending left me thinking it even more unrealistic. But I guess sometimes unrealistic things can happen in real life too. Too much of it just feel into place too easily, it got rather hokey. But all in all I would have to say its worth my rating.

Book Description
Grammar school--it's all about eating and sleeping. Well, for Chet Gecko, anyway.
To Chet, nothing is more divine than a plate of Mrs. Bagoong's Mothloaf Surprise followed by a sweet bit of shut-eye on the playground. (Besides a few Pillbug Crunch bars and a monthlong holiday, that is.)
In these two hilarious mysteries from Chet's tattered casebook, he and his mockingbird partner, Natalie Attired, must catch a cafeteria thief, foil the sinister plans of a weaselly zombie master . . . and still take part in the Nations of the World PTA assembly. (Fourth-grade detectives get no respect.)

Wonderful addition to the series.......2006-08-29
My son is 9 years old and hates chapter books, he would much rather be reading non-fiction. When I found the Chet Gecko series at the store, I took a chance and bought the first book. At first my son refused to read it, but after reading the first two chapters aloud as a bedtime story, he was hooked. He has since read all of the Chet Gecko novels and loves each and every one. I have read most of them to my students, (I teach reading recovery in a middle school)and they have always been a huge hit. While he may not be reading Chaucer, I am very happy to see him reading chapter books and enjoying himself. My six year old daughter also loves having the books read to her. I would recommend the Chet Gecko to any child, boy or girl, as a great introduction to mystery novels, detective stories, and bad puns.
My feelings exactly!.......2006-07-30
I'am getting SICK of Mr. Smith's reviews for his eight reviews
on this series. Mr. Hale is a blessed man of quirky and tongue-
in-cheek humour. Mr. Smith, if you can't enjoy a charismatic and
smartaleck hero who becomes a good hero to children litearature,
then what the hell are you? I don't wanna see another one of yo-
ur reviews on here unless you find this series good.

Now, if people have read your review about Chet Gecko, their yo-
ung elementary kids are missing out on a lot of fun and mystery.
You have hypnotized parents and kids as if you're Adolf Hitler!
AND SPELL VIOLENCE CORRECTLY!
My daughter loves Chet!.......2005-11-07
Get some perspective--my 9-year old daughter LOVES Chet Gecko. She also LOVES Laura Ingalls, so I don't think she's been particularly harmed by Chet.
Brian you spaz, do you need a wedgie? Just kidding..........2005-06-22
Seriously, have a sense of humor and get off Bruce Hale's back. His books are funny, and my child (who does not embrace violence or judgemental attitudes) loves them. Also, please spell "violence" correctly. A teacher who can't spell shouldn't write reviews.
Corrupting Our Children.......2005-06-09
Bruce Hale encourages violance and judgemental attitudes. As a teacher, there is no way I would allow my students to read this book.

Great Book!.......2006-03-01
My two year-old has the patience of, well a two year-old, but he held very still for this book and wanted me to read it again when we were done. This is one book that I want autographed. :)
Wonderful for Children.......2006-02-15
I found this online, through another site, so I have had a chance to read and re-read the book. It is a wonderful read-aloud, that portrays this little girl and her favorite book. I have read it with children in my family, and all ages, both boys and girls liked it.

LOVED IT!!.......2007-08-12
This book was a very nice change from the paranormals I have been consumed with lately! I forgot how much I love a good historical. And Lord of Desire definitely qualifies! The interaction between the characters is fantastic. I love how Brand can be strong and tough when he needs to be and then gentle and caring in the next heartbeat! And the sparks that fly when Brand and Brynna are together! Just sucks you right into the moment. Ms. Quinn certainly knows how to pen extremely sensual encounters! I love this book and can't wait to get my hands on the Lord of Temptation!
Absolutely the BEST Romance of 2005.......2007-04-05
First ... I never really write reviews because I feel that I cannot give a book justice with my simple words.
BUT!!!!!! I have to say Lord of Desire was absolutely the BEST novel I have read in a longgggggg time.
I finished it within 3 ½ hrs of starting it and when I was done, I wanted to start all over again. I can't describe what this book made me feel ..... laughter, love, anger (due to Colette) and hope.
Brand was such a great hero. The Authors words just made him so life like and talk about sexy .... Is there a fan around here? WOW! Brynna, Oh! How I loved her fire and love for Brand.
This may or may not help you decide to read this novel ... But as a lover of romance novels (esp. PQ's) I say you will not be disappointed.
A Real Yawner.......2007-04-04
I love reading debut authors. When I find a good one, I feel as if I've found a jewel. Well, the jewel this time was a lump of coal, a real dud.
I wish I'd read an excerpt first before spending the money for this book. Right away, the opening was boring and did not engage me. Ms. Quinn has a problem with POV and kept head-hopping on the first page. Next is this big info-dump of background that brings the book to a screeching halt, and I'm on on page four! I was ready to deep-six it and I barely got started!
With all due respect to the author, I kept plodding away hoping the pace would improve or the characters would become interesting. But it never happened. This book was better than a sleeping pill. I would be guaranteed to be sleeping in ten minutes after starting to read it.
I thought the plot was way overdone. The hero and heroine kept up this silly "loves me/hates me" charade that was extremely tedious. I hate ridiculous misunderstandings!
I'll pick up the next books of Ms Quinn's from the library and give her another chance.
Concept was good. . .But does not live up to it!!!.......2007-03-14
This book started out really good, but the author dragged her story about how he was hurt by some scheming woman and now he can't let himself love another. It just went on and on and on on that subject. I felt like going inside the book and take a bat and give him one good whack to knock some sense in him. As for her, she goes from being very tough to almost wishy washy.
I haven't had such a hard time reading a book since reading Frankenstein.
I hate to give a review on a book that I haven't finished yet, but I just wanted to let readers know to be prepared to become bored by this book. The hero and the heroine officially meet on page 30 and from then on, I think that the author tried to hard to make us believe that they were meant for each other but the fact that he was disillusioned by love he could not let himself fall for another woman ever again. But eventhough he was heart broken, he still was every much turned on by our heroine. And as for her, she was portrayed as a horney female lusting after the hero. So from page 30 through page 170, was nothing about how horney they were both for each other until they finally consummate their marriage.
So far there has not been any action whatsoever. I am having a hard time finishing this book. I only read it when I'm in the bathroom (and that's not that often). If I ever finish this book, I will rewrite another review if the story line picks up the pace and if I think that it merits my apology. But so far, I don't see me changing my mind about my review.
This book is boring. The hero dull and the heroine wishy washy! If I could, I would give this book no stars.
Worth reading but not a favorite.......2007-01-26
It wasn't great, but it was good enough to interest me in the sequel which I have just ordered. A lot of time is spent thinking about, wondering and describing the main characters' feelings. I might have preferred a little less of that. Good plot and action at the end. Characters were enjoyable.

MY Lord's Desire.......2007-05-24

exciting medieval romance.......2007-02-10
In 1204, wealthy Lady Adelaide D'Averette has vowed to never allow a man to own her lands, which means never being wed as a husband controls anything the wife brought into their marriage. As she fends off odious fortune hunters, she heads to King John's court.
Lord Armand de Boisnaston has been a loyal knight to his liege King John protecting the monarch's land in Normandy. However, he and his half-brother Bayard were taken prisoner though he was freed to cross the Channel to raise a ransom liberate his sibling. At King John's court and time with his uncle, Armand obtains a taste of how expendable though defending the crown on the continent are as he fails to raise the needed money obtaining only 284 marks well short of the demanded 500. Armand needs a wealthy wife soonest. However he is attracted to Adelaide who reciprocates his feelings though she makes it clear she plans to marry no one. When they are caught in a compromising position, they are forced to become engaged, but it is not until they risk their lives to stop traitors that each knows love has sealed their fate.
Fans of Margaret Moore's exciting medieval romances will enjoy her latest effort, the start of a new miniseries, due to the gender war fought between an energetic independent heroine and a respectable knight. The story line is at its best when this pair argue, fuss, and kiss as she wonders if he is using her to gain the 216 marks he needs while he ponders how to convince her that he desires her as well as wanting to rescue Bayard. Though the treachery subplot adds external tension, it takes the audience away from the prime fun, of observing Armand's efforts to prove she is his beloved desire.

Surprisingly Entertaining........2005-06-19
Nicole Jordan is a hit and miss author. She CAN write a good story and she CAN write a dud. LORD OF DESIRE is a good story. Although, the foundation of the story is ordinary - an enchanting forceful hero kidnaps a fair maiden - his motive: retaliation - her fiancé's father murdered his parents. Still, Ms. Jordan manages to spin an interesting tale.
Jordan's setting is first-rate. The reader senses the author has taken time to research the customs of the Middle East. Her results: an exotic atmosphere.
Alysson Vickery was an English rose searching for passion and adventure. In Algeria, she found both, much to her sorrow. Jafar el-Saleh was a Berber prince; the royal blood of fierce rulers flowed through his veins. Alysson Vickery and Jafar el-Saleh were silently in love, but they had no future. They had nothing in common. She was his prisoner; her value was planned. He was her jailer; her use calculated.
LORD OF DESIRE is a pleasing read, even though the story tends to run in circles (a good editing job would serve!) and the prologue is questionable (did someone advise its insertion at a later date?). Alas, this book is no longer published, but it is available on the secondary market (pricey online), so do check out those yard sales and flea markets and witness the developing talent of Nicole Jordan.

So and so.......2003-04-10
The first review given didn't describe what the book is about. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't buy a book unless I know what it's about. I took a risk with this one, since I love most of Nicole Jordan's books. She's an awesome writer who gives romance books sensual characters full of passion and personality and the story always interesting. I like to collect books written by my favorite authors, so this is a worthwhile item to keep. However, I don't think it's her best book she written. It seemed to go in circles, and too longwinded of a book to read. I thought I would never finish the book. At times, it was hard to pay attention to the book.
REVIEW: Alysson Vickery--wealthy, beautiful, and wildy rebellious--leaves France to go to an exhibition with her uncle to a war-torn Algiers regardles of her fiance's arguement of wanting her to stay due to her safety. She gets kidnapped by Jafar, a Berber sheik who wants to use Alysson as bait for her fiance and his army to lead into a battle with his clan. Jafar finds Alysson's fiance responsible for his parents' brutal death. Alysson defies Jafar anyway she can and tries to get her freedom. They both have a strong attraction towards each other, yet they have to control their passion for one another. They both learn the person within each other as well as resolving emotional pain.
My thoughts on the book: Like I said previously, the book is long-winded. The characters are great, but the story needs work. It drags in certain places. If you want this as a collection, you should get it, however I suggest you shop for a lower price at different places as well as here. I hope this review helps.
Wow.......2002-08-06
I highly recommend this story.. I picked this title up off the bottom shelf at a friends house, she let me have it, she didn't remember it's plot - she reads sooo many romances she forgets... HER LOSS!!! It's THE book I "go to" when I want to "escape"and become engulfed in a well written book that transports one away to experience "paradise". The characters are well developed and the story well plotted and written, the location exotic with an excellent play on the resources, humanity and political circumstance of the era
Nine years since I'd acquired it, I'm looking to buy another copy as a backup to my yellowing, very well worn first printing.
A book not to be missed.......2001-02-11
I beg to differ from Ms.Alkins! I first stumbled across a Chinese version of LORD OF DESIRE some 8 years ago. Reading it gave me such pleasure that 8 years later, I still remember and like it well enough to try to locate a copy in English just to appreciate it more in its original language.
LORD OF DESIRE is a wonderful book that includes all the things romance fans will ask for: a powerful, mesmerizing hero (a sheik!) seeking vengeance, a beautiful and feisty heroine held captive, an exotic locale, interesting secondary characters and memorable, hot sex sences. Yeah, I know these elements sound cliched, but when combined and handled so masterfully by Nicole Jordan, they create an arresting tale not to be missed.
En route from France to war-torn Algiers, Alysson Vickery is abducted by Nicholas Sterling, a.k.s. Jafar el-Saleh, an Algerian rebel who holds Alysson's fiance responsible for his parents' death. He then proceeds to carry Alysson away to his camp. Of couse, Alysson, a brave woman she is, continues to fight Jafar and plots her escape whenever possible while Jafar thwarts (nearly) every one of her attempt. Both of them try to outsmart the other and yet there is no denying the powerful attraction between the two. Alysson gradually comes to understand and sympathize with Jafar. And Jafar, tortured though he is, never abuses Alysson. He treats her well and is torn between his desire to revenge and his love for Alysson, an innocent pawn in his deadly plan.........
There are many obstacles that lie between the hero and heroine. Reading about how they transcend all that's seperating them will definitely stir up a mixture of emotions in you--you'll cheer for them, sigh for them, smile with them, and even shed a few tears.......
Lord of Desire is a definite keeper. Although it's currently out of print, I strongly encourage everyone to seek it out and read it! Trust me, you won't regret it.

Not what I expected.......2003-06-01
Be warned! This book is like a comic book. High on visual, low on story. It has 4 parts. The harem girls are each telling how they came to be in the harem. The stories they told, had this been a regular novel, would have been spectacular. As is, you get the bare story with accompanying pictures. The pictures are good, but in this case, a picture is NOT worth a thousand words. I would have preferred to picture the story myself and heard more details of what happened. It was not worth the money.
