Author Tim Powers evokes 17th-century England with a combination of meticulously researched historic detail and imaginative flights in this sci-fi tale of time travel. Winner of the 1984 Philip K. Dick Award for best original science fiction paperback, this 1989 edition of the book that took the fantasy world by storm is the first hardcover version to be published in the United States. In his brief introduction, Ramsey Campbell sets The Anubis Gates in an adventure context, citing Powers's achievement of "extraordinary scenes of underground horror, of comedy both high and grotesque, of bizarre menace, of poetic fantasy."
The colonization of Egypt by western European powers is the launch point for power plays and machinations. Steeping together in this time-warp stew are such characters as an unassuming Coleridge scholar, ancient gods, wizards, the Knights Templar, werewolves, and other quasi-mortals, all wrapped in the organizing fabric of Egyptian mythology. In the best of fantasy traditions, the reluctant heroes fight for survival against an evil that lurks beneath the surface of their everyday lives.

Highly Descriptive Page Turner.......2007-09-28
Fantasy at its best. Time travel across 1600s, 1800s, and 1980s with bizarre and sometimes grotesque characters. The scenes come alive as if you were there. With adept historic detail, he creatively weaves a chase across time travels with fluctuating characters. Expect only the unexpected as he concludes with a vivid, wild, seemingly cataclysmic ending. I couldn't stop turning the pages.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
An entertaining adventure of time travel and magic. In the past, Egyptian sorcerors are plotting against the British, trying to destroy them in the future.
In the future/present, a wealthy man discovers the key to some time travel secrets, via the use of gates. Hiring an academic, he tests one out, but the guy is stuck in the past, and gets tied up in the whole Egyptian sorcery thing.
Plenty of other wild stuff in this book, too.
A Great Time Travel Fantasy.......2007-08-29
Anyone who loves time travel stories will like THE ANUBIS GATES. It made me think of many favorites like THE DOOR INTO SUMMER, REPLAY, MILLENNIUM, and even GROUNDHOG DAY. Powers really sets the stage and he uses his premise in amazing ways. Sometimes the main characters don't seem as smart as they should be, making dull mistakes to further the plot, but the action, romance, magic and endless twists and turns make this a very satisfying read.
A Great Romp Through Time.......2007-07-01
I just finished "The Anubis Gates." It was a strange mixture of science fiction and magic, but it worked. A group of modern people go back into time to 1810, and one man gets stranded. I found myself turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. The beggar gangs for 19th century London were fascinating.
I would also recommend "The Trader," by Charles De Lint.Trader (Newford)
Both these authors have great fun playing with magic.
Time travel without the paradox........2007-02-16
This is the first Tim Powers book I've read, what a clever and unexpectedly good book this was. Powers is an excellent writer with a style that is breezy and interesting making this a book a hard one to put down. I look forward to reading more of his work.
Brendan Doyle is a university professor and Samuel Coleridge scholar in 1983. He has joined an eccentric millionaire that has unearthed and exposed the holes in time and is able to time travel. From 1983 California to 1810 London, a group of time travelers go back to witness a speech by the famous poet Coleridge, and that is where the adventure starts.
One of the frustrating parts of time travel stories are the inherent paradoxes that are involved in time travel and Ray Bradbury exploited this issue in his short story "Sound of Thunder." A killing of a butterfly during the dinosaur era drastically changes the future. Fortunately, Anubis Gates does not fall into this trap and it elegantly acknowledges the paradox issues.
The author explores the slums of London, the Gypsy camps outside of the city, a trip to Egypt, and a quick jaunt to 17th century London. Interspersed throughout are historical figures such as Byron and Coleridge, James Duke of Monmouth, Muhammad Ali of Egypt, etc, etc. A fascinating story and a talented storyteller. I really enjoyed this book

most comprehensive sociological approach to media and political scandal.......2006-05-09
This is one of the best books out there. Comprehensive and myth-dispelling, I think this is an essential read for anyone interested in politics, the media, and/or collective memory.
Once again I must bail out a good book.......2004-11-30
I encourage others to place a quick 5-star review with me to help offset the insipid nonsense review left by a child.
Worst Book Ever.......2004-02-23
This book is so bad. The author, Michael Schudson, doesn't realize that books are around longer than human beings live and some people around the age of 16 at present day don't know what watergate was about. He should've explained what it was in the beginning of the book. I had to ask my dad about it because I couldn't understand what the author was talking about without background knowledge about watergate. I'd take the Scarlet Letter over this book anyday (and believe me the scarlet letter was pretty bad itself).
Book Description
An arrogant earl determined to find the perfect wife; an intractable governess determined to transform him into the perfect man––who will win? The first book in The Talisman Ring series, this delightfully humorous and sexy romance links to Karen Hawkins' last book, The Seduction of Sara.

Battle until the blissful end.......2007-08-08
Half-brother of Sara (The Seduction Of Sara), Anthony Elliott, Earl of Greyley, becomes an unexpected guardian to five young children. After frogs, glue and feathers frighten off a succession of nannies, Anthony decides no-one will tame the children like Anna Thraxton, Sara's best friend. Impoverished but of gentle birth, Anthony dislikes her intensely. She is brash and opinionated, she's too tall, she's too forthright, etc. etc. However, she is regarded as the nanny. Anthony bribes her with a fortune to take on his hellions. Things go from bad to worse. Anna doesn't follow a schedule, she eats with the children (not him), she ignores his wishes, annoys him intensely and calls him an `arrogant bastard'. And yet, she works her magic with the children. And him. She glanced up at him and froze - it was as if he wished to devour her. His gaze was hot, possessive, a furious passion deep in the brown depths. The distressing moment Anna realizes Anthony is betrothed to another is heart-breaking. The moment she decides to `instruct' his fiancée about how to `cope' with him is selfless and poignant. Don't worry, Anna and Anthony do belong together, and you'll be enthralled as this couple battle until the blissful end. Memorable.
It Was Very Memorable Indeed..........2006-01-07
This is the second book by Karen Hawkins I've read this past year. I also picked up and read "The Seduction of Sara". I didn't care for that book too much. Although, I felt parts of the book were well written, I just never got into the characters or the story line and the title was nothing like the book so, disappointment simply grew after that. That book did briefly introduce you to Anna and Anthony and their initial dislike for one another. Guess it set the stage for this book. At the time I bought "An Affair To Remember", I didn't know it was a continuation of the St. John story line from "A Seduction of Sara". Fortunately....this second book worked out well by chance and I was happily surprised to find this story was much better, the characters more developed, the plot line funny, interesting and the ending was the perfect touch.
Karen Hawkins is a prime example of why I usually select two books from each author as it's possible one book works the other does not, or both books bomb or both books are amazing. Usually, one novel is not enough to gauge an authors ability to write and absorb the reader. I enjoyed this story from the very beginning.
Our hero Anthony Greyley is one tough, arrogant and demanding Earl. Although he is quite something to look at - he is difficult to deal with at times. Mind you, he had a tough childhood and was required to take over the family in his late teens and since then, pay off everyone's high debts, re-establish the family name, re-work their tenant and land owned properties and more. High responsibilities for one so young. He took it on and was successful but, the price was molding a man that became tough,, harsh and brash. All traits that aren't terrible but, also need some soft polishing to make him more appealing. Anthony has just about everything he wants in his life...including his plans to marry the perfect little English girl - Miss Charlotte - she is quiet, timid, docile and pretty. All the things an Earl should have in a wife. Or so he thought.
Enter our main lady. Anthony has known our heroine Anna Thraxton most of his life as she was one of his sister Sara's best friends. He didn't care for Anna as she was nothing like most of the noble girls of high society. She was very tall, had a dominant nose, vibrant red hair, spoke her mind and wasn't a simpering or silly miss. She was intelligent, keen and kind. Things Anthony found imposing and not appealing (or so he thought). Anna in turn felt Anthony was rude, intimidating, dark, stiff, stodgy and old fashioned and gruff (or so she thought). . So...they were off to a good start in their "deep" admiration of one another. Anna came from a well respected family in society but, due to hard financial times, she and her grandfather had to make their way on their one as more "common" people working for a living.
The story throws them together when Anthony is given full guardianship of his cousin's five young children. The children's grandmother is very difficult and wants custody of them as it would give her control of a gem mine (Anthony is unaware of this). Anthony won't turn away from his responsibility to the children. Anthony takes the children in for the right reasons - so, they have a home, a secure place to grow up, education and a future - they on the other hand make his life miserable as they don't want to be there. Anthony goes through dozens of governesses as they drive them all away. The children play tricks on everyone - Anthony, the governess, the butler, the housekeeper and more. Anthony has to find the right child rearing teacher to help him. Enter Anna...a governess with a sterling reputation for dealing with the most difficult children. She comes highly respected and at a cost. Anthony has to over-look his negative feelings toward her as she does him to come to agreement to come live with him and work on the children.
From there our tale takes twists and turns that are vastly interesting and amusing. While the attraction between Anthony (she calls him Greyley when irritated or challenged by him) and Anna (he calls her Thraxton when irritated or challenged by her) grows leaps and bounds, the gentle transformation of the children begin too. She learned early children are only difficult when they don't feel secure, loved and nurtured. Anna wins them over by spending time with them, finding out who they are and what they like, keeping them to simple schedules and giving back as good as they get when they play practical tricks on her. The scenes with the children are always good - there are five of them after all and each has their own style, character and interests. I really enjoyed how Anna met them trick for trick, sassy come back to sassy come back and she ruled the day with her tough, but loving ways.
Anthony constantly challenges Anna's methods of being a governess and is always asking for specific schedules, dates/times and how/why everything should be done instead of leaving the discipline of the children to a pro. He learns the hard way that she does know right from wrong - she not only changes the children but, him along the way. And all for the good. Plus...it's heart warming when we find Anthony spying from a distance on Anna and the children while they are at play or learning on the estate lawns...he can't stay away as he is becoming as captivated by her as the children are.
I liked that the relationship between Anthony and Anna grew as the book went on. Their attraction was more than just physical; they also cared about the other one and learned to like all the characteristics in the beginning they thought they didn't like. Plus...they helped to give the other some softer edges that might have been missing earlier. They had some scenes of kissing, hugging, light intimacy but, the author held off until the end to physically bring them together in full. In some books that might be a negative...it worked very well in this story.
The side characters of the children, Anna's grandpa Sir Phinneas, the grandmother to the children, one of Anthony's cousins, Rupert and Antonhy's intended bride Charlotte all play important side roles to this story. The group as a whole make the book balanced, deep and interesting. There are other plots going on beside the children and Anthony...there is also what to do with a fiancé' he no longer wants, a cousin who seems to like his governess, a grandmother destined to try and break up the children and finally...a loving but, sneaky grandpa who simply wants his granddaughter to find love. All fine side plots that work really well in this book.
If you were like me and didn't care for this author before, give this story another try. If you already like this author and book - good for you. I'm sure you agree it was vastly entertaining and a solid read. Four stars! I'm off now to look for other books and continue to give this author a try. Happy reading!
Anthony & Anna's story.......2005-05-30
This book was great! I really loved it. I wanted to give it 5 stars, and if it hadn't lagged in the first 1/3 of the story, it
would have been. I guess I was anxious to get past the introduction of characters & on to the plot.
I don't generally enjoy romances with children in them, unless the
children truly add to the story, and in this book, they were a huge & important part of it. The first part of the book, I just wanted to slap Desford, the oldest. I really detested that kid.
But as the 2nd part of the book progressed, I found myself starting to warm to him.
Some of my favorite characters were Anna's grandpa - how he fancied himself the owner of Anthony's library; Selena & her
memorable scene at the pond (if you liked the croquet scene in
Married to the Viscount by Julia Quinn, you will love the pond
scene in this book!); Charlotte, how she changed from a simpleton into a very enlightened woman, thanks to Anna's assistance; and
Rupert, how he went from someone, living with minimal wealth, not a care in the world, to someone who found someone to care about, & how it changed him overnight, how he became a responsible person, just from his caring about her. Suddenly, his financial future did matter, as he wanted to provide adequately for his beloved.
As for the main characters, Anthony & Anna, they were wonderful.
It was nice to read a book where the lead male finds the lead
female's legs more interesting than her chest (though it was
well endowed), for a change.
The pond scene being my favorite scene, my next favorite had to
be the play the children put on at the end of the book. If not
for this play, the characters might have been forever held in limbo. It was embarrassing to many of the characters, but necessary to tie up the loose ends & finish the story.
I really wanted to give this 5 stars, if the first portion had had a bit more umph, I would have. So, my rating is 4 & 3/4 stars.
Anthony and Anna - you just knew they had to get together!.......2004-10-09
Anthony and Anna had been sparring since the Seduction of Sara - they were both so strong willed and opinionated - what a heady mixture! Anthony becomes the caretaker of 5 of his 1/2 brother's children and they need a strong governess - enter Anna Thraxton Anthony's sisters best friend. They have known each other forever and always clashed. Well the old saying there is a fine line between love and hate - and of course the love eventually wins out in this battle of wills. Strong chemistry between Anthony and Anna makes this a very enjoyable read!
Perfectly wonderful!.......2004-03-19
I adored every page of this book! Karen Hawkins has a real winner here. From the very first sentence, I was drawn into the story and the characters.
Greyley is marvelously arrogant and "growly" while Sara is a nearly perfect heroine--strong, determined, fiery, and witty. They sizzle every moment they are together. Secondary characters are generally well-drawn and engaging as well. The plot moves along swiftly, with Hawkins' writing keeping the reader's attention throughout. I was very slightly disappointed in the second and pivotal love scene, expecting it to be somehow "more," but by the end of that section, it no longer mattered. And even though I would have liked a bit more about this terrific couple in the epilogue, the story was utterly satisfying. The flaws are so minor as to hardly be worth mentioning. The romantic leads are engaging, the story entertaining, and the end result delightful.
"An Affair to Remember" is one of the best books I've read. I can't wait to pick up another Karen Hawkins' novel.

This book has some FABULOUS recipes, but they are definitely for special occasions or when you have a LOT of time on your hands. You would not want to be trying to whip up one of these recipes on the fly, at 6:00 on a school night. Plus, the kids would probably turn their noses up at the unusual dishes. But, if you're looking for a special recipe for a special night, look here.
Book Description
It was one of the greatest romances of our time. They were both Hollywood giants in their own right, yet it was the nine hit films Katherine Hepburn made with Spencer Tracy that, in the eyes of the American public, defined them as Hollywood's most celebrated romantic team. On-screen, the headstrong Tracy had met his match and she put him in his place. Off-screen, despite the fact that he never divorced his wife, Kate remained utterly devoted to the mercurial, sometimes violent Spencer as he battled his dependence on alcohol.
Now, thirty years after Spencer's death, and as Kate celebrates her 90th birthday, Christopher Andersen reveals fascinating new insights from important sources, and offers the full, poignant story of their life together. "An Affair to Remember" paints the complete, inspiring, often funny, sometime heartbreaking, always captivating portrait of the unique relationship between these two American icons.

Spence and Kate: the secret romance.......2003-07-31
These two screen giants met on the set of Woman of the Year in 1942 and were together until Spencer died of a heart attack, shortly after wrapping up Guess Whose Coming to Dinner in 1967. This book chronicles their remarkable, romantic pairing in an era where a movie star's private life could remain hidden from a prying public. Spencer was married to a devoted Catholic, Louise, and he refused to divorce her. He also felt a tremendous sense of guilty about his deaf son. So marriage was out of the question, but Kate didn't care, she just wanted she be with Spencer, and she was, following him all over the world to sit worshipfully at his feet.
Andersen dutifully chronicles the nine classic Tracy-Hepburn films and gives some intriguing behind-the-scenes glimpses into each movie. There is also much information about Tracy's legendary bouts with the bottle, his brief fling with Gene Tierney in the early 50's and Kate's affair with Howard Hughes in the 1930's. All the bases are covered, but I wish Andersen would have interviewed more people close to the duo. Still, an engrossing read and essential for anyone enamored with either Spencer or Kate.
Memorable.......2002-03-26
I found An Affair to Remember a truly remarkable portrait of Hepburn and Spencer's lives (before and after they met). The book was interesting and well written. A great pick for anyone interested in either actor.
Star-Crossed Lovers.......2000-04-06
This novel opened up a world that I knew nothing about. The world that only Katharine & Spencer lived in, together... I've been a huge fan of the acting duo for years. Now I feel like I almost know them. Reading this book is like taking a quick peek behind the scenes. It gives details into their lives prior to their initial meeting. Then continues describing how they had to sneak around in order to keep their affair out of the papers. This novel is heartwarming & also tragic. I loved it. If you're a romantic, you'll love it, too.
A book for all the hopless romantics out there........1999-10-01
One of the best books I have ever read. A great love story for the romantic in all of us. Chronicals the ups and downs of a relationship on the sly with a love that would last a lifetime. Very sad, yet a love we all wish we could find. I couldn't put it down.
Very intriguing........1999-07-19
It was filled with great information about Katharine and Spencer - seperately and together. It is unbelievable that they existed in a 26 year relationship and nobody talked about it until Katharine started talking about it herself. Amazing.
Book Description
Written by former White House Social Secretary Laurie Firestone, this delightful cookbook provides simplified versions of authentic "State Dinner" menus. Perfect for home entertaining. Personal anecdotes and photographs from Laurie's private collection make this a must for every home cook and history and political buff!

So Intresting .......2007-03-27
I really enjoyed reading this book. Cary Grant might be very complex and
difficult person to live with.Yet he is gentle and kind. That is enough.I
simply feel sorry that Maureen Donaldson didn't marry him.She Couldn't
realize how much she was loved! She will also regret not marrying him for the
rest of her life!! (Sorry for my bad English)
Reading Past Midnight.......2007-01-02
I give this book 5 stars because there are not too many books that keep me awake at night. Usually even a good book puts me to sleep sooner or later. Not this one.
Maureen Donaldson had a four year relationship with legendary Hollywood actor Cary Grant from 1973-1977 after he had retired from film making. Her descriptions of meeting and first getting to know Grant made me feel like I was almost experiencing it with her. I could definitely identify with her feelings of awe and being overwhelmed that Cary Grant was interested in her. I would have felt the same way. As she got to know him and spend more time with him, she saw that he was only human (aren't we all). In fact, he was very human, with many of the same fears, insecurities and childhood hurts that so many of us have to deal with ourselves.
I agree with other reviewers who feel this book is not a trash Cary Grant book. I don't think that was her intention. I don't think less of Grant now than before I read the book. From everything I have read about Grant in this book and elsewhere, it seems he had a very rock-solid core to him. He comes across as a very loyal friend, surprisingly generous at times (when the mood struck him), tender-hearted and kind.
Maureen tells in her book how Grant read a daily devotional each day of the year out of a Christian booklet he had a subscription to. After they broke up Maureen said she continued the practice of reading those daily selections herself.
She took Grant to an Alice Cooper concert (with Grant in disguise). He hated it, but the fact that she talked him into going proves to me that he really cared about her. A man his age going to an Alice Cooper concert? That is love.
I do wonder why she wrote this book. I guess I should not try to speculate. According to Maureen, Grant tried to get her to marry him and even enlisted Jennifer Jones and her last husband to offer their home as a wedding site.
Even after reading the whole book I still can't help but think Maureen was nuts not to marry him.
..........2006-05-11
I've just finished reading this and i'm a little shellshocked. Not because I feel Grant has been villified but perhaps merely because it shows such a debonair and enigmatic idol of mine as a true fallible human being.
Like the other reviewer commented, I too thought it seemed to be written with a fair amount of objectivity. It did not come across to me as a bitter and delibrate attempt to trash or undermine Grant. It does come across, however, as a bit of a tacky and harrowing romance novel, even the presentation of the book conveys such an image.
I think if you're a Cary Grant fan that wants to find out a little more about Archie Leach and is willing to accept the fact that their view of Cary may be tarnished in the process; then go ahead and read this, it is an interesting and (from what I can tell) balanced read.
Let's all hope he was happy in the end.
Great Book.......2003-11-09
I felt like I knew Cary Grant much better after reading this book. It seems to have been written with some objectivity. The book makes you feel as though you are right in the middle of their relationship. I really enjoyed reading about the details of the most dashing man of the classic movie era. There will never be another Cary Grant, unfortunately.

Back cover reads:
A night never to be forgotten!
Luke St. Clair had it all: looks, international success, females at his feet. But was his life-style the recipe for lasting happiness? Luke wondered if he should marry a nice Australian girl and start a family...
But would that ever happen? Eighteen months ago Luke had met the girl of his dreams in Sydney, but she'd disappreared into thin air after their brief, passionate encounter. Then a stroke of luck led him to discover her name.
Now what should Luke do--the woman he'd always remember was Mrs. Rachel Cleary!
Highly Reccommend!.......2000-05-28
I'm an avid romance book reader, and this is the first book I've read that was viewed and narrated through the male side. I enjoyed it! A change from other series books where the emotional turmoil is narrated with the female lead.
