Steamy fun, a triple love story and a decided lack of mope........2007-09-13
Most of the previous reviewers have gone into aspects of the plot and I won't retread what has already been well stated. One thing that has to be brought up is that Emma Holly can write characters. People have traumas; they make mistakes and those mistakes mark their future actions and interaction with people. What Emma doesn't write is moping.
Charity's made a lot of mistakes in her life, but when she accepts Eric's offer and goes to B.G.'s manor, she charms her way into becoming more than another guest. Her sense of humor and no-nonsense approach make her irresistible to a pair of men who've, by no coincidence, isolated themselves from the world. She is inspired by Eric and B.G. to look beyond those mistakes in the past and see herself as the intelligent, perspicacious woman both feel Charity wants and needs to become. She however, invokes a change in the lives of the men by bringing some much needed humor, kindness and warmth into their everyday existence.
It's wonderful to see the threesome falling for each other and even better to see a woman having fun with her sexuality, learning that smart girls can overcome bad beginnings and that there is a place for quantum physics in an adult story with plenty of steam. Charity/Eric/B.G. will heat up your libido and make you want to read more about paradoxical thought experiment known as Schrodinger's cat.
WOW, WOW, WOW.......2007-07-05
I don't even know where to start...I'll just say this. I had never read this kind of book and what a great way to start. I was surprised by how erotic the writing was! Even the um...guy/guy stuff was really, really hot! (and I never thought I'd enjoy that part of it) Written more like a porno movie than romance novel but still a fun read!
Harmless sexy fun........2007-03-09
Not enough story for my tastes. Mostly sex scenes. Well written however. If you're looking for a bit of naughty self comfort, this will appeal.
A young woman goes to a manision where she has plenty of sex, small amount of self discovery, and eventually finds love. Like I said, not much story but some harmless well written sex scenes.
More erotica than erotic romance.......2007-01-16
There's something about Strange Attractions that leaves you with a slightly gloomy feeling. Maybe it's because I prefer a real element of romance in my books, which I thought this book lacked. In spite of its categorization as an erotic romance, the book seems to suffer from a complete lack of emotion. The storyline is virtually non-existent, which is okay, I suppose, because we generally don't pick books of this genre for their intellectual complexity, but it bothered me that the main protagonists didn't at any point of time, act in a way that leads us to believe that they were in love. The sex scenes were very well written - Holly never suffers from a lack of imagination in this department - but it got boring after a while because that was all there was to the book - sex. The three main characters was incredibly drawn to each other sexually, but their relationship lacked emotional depth, which makes the ending hard to buy.
All in all, this book is pure erotica, and nothing more. If erotica is all that you're looking for, then Strange Attractions is definitely worth reading, but if you prefer a believable romance to go with the sex, you might give this book a miss.
impressive use of sexuality.......2007-01-10
Once again Emma Holly has written an intense story that involves some pretty hot sexual scenes. If you don't like a male to male love story, then this is not for you as it is featured prominently. There are of course other relationships in the story and they also engage in very hot, very specific sexual activities. I wish there was as much detail in the male/female scenes as there is in the male/male scenes. I must admit, it gave me new insight into male/male relationships.

Dark carnival stories probe the limits of humanity.......2001-02-13
It's difficult to easily categorize these dark works of fantasy: they are short stories written by such notables as Ray Bradbury, Michael Bishop, Nina Kiriki Hoffman and others, blending literature and art and all based on the strange kinetic sculpture Crowded After Hours by Lisa Snellings. Dark carnival stories probe the limits of humanity.

Site Rating 4 1/2 Hearts - No One Writes A Sex Scene Like Holly! Hot, Carnal, And Fresh!.......2006-02-12
Everything in life seems to be explainable when viewed through an ingenious mind. Mix in the many nuances of erotic forays; you get what is called Strange Attractions.
B. G. Grantham is a secluded physicist that wants to know every thing that pertains to sexuality, and its effects. Whether it is group sex, men on men, women on women, or the traditional man and woman. One lucky lady, Charity Wills, has been chosen as a new subject for Grantham's latest carnal study. Charity will get a free college education and a whole lot more. Buckle up, because this book really gets rocking!
Strange Attractions is by the highly acclaimed erotic author, Emma Holly. Ms. Holly can flat out pen an erotic stunner. From the moment you crack open this book; you are blasted with carnal heat. The characters are multi-dimensional and well developed. The premise is lusciously fresh and intensely detailed. Much like a set of silk sheets: luxurious to dwell on and highly arousing to the touch. Emma Holly is the erotic voice of today.
Charity's character is spunky and bright, yet she still maintains a highly feminine allure to her persona. When it comes to sex, anything goes and does with her. When she gets a chance to have a free college education and have great sex, who is she to complain? But, watch out, Charity has a whole sexual arsenal she has yet to unveil.
Charity's "keeper" Eric Berne is also Grantham's right-hand man. He has known Grantham before he became famous-- and these two men are quite tight, you could say. Grantham and Eric will get an eye-opening experience when it comes to Charity and her sexual escapades.
This erotic contemporary leaves nothing to the imagination and every thing to satisfying the carnal hungers it generates while reading it. If you are not breathless and a little shell shocked after reading this book, then you have not read the same one this reviewer did. Nab a copy of Strange Attractions by Emma Holly today.

Beautiful and defiant, Kristen Haardrad meets the hot, longing gaze of Royce, Thane of Wyndhurst, with icy fury – vowing never to be enslaved by the powerful Saxon lord who holds her captive.
She is his enemy and his prize – a wild and lusty hellion to be tamed by her dashing conqueror's kiss. But though maddened with desire for the golden–haired Viking temptress, noble Royce, in conscience, cannot force his exquisite prisoner to submit. For only Kristen's willing surrender can quench the blistering fires that sear his tormented soul – and heal a heart consumed by passion with a soothing balm of rapturous, unconditional love.

A Great Sequel to "Fires of Winter".......2007-09-03
This was a great sequel to "Fires of Winter" and I just loved reading this book. Kirsten who is captured and enslaved along with some of her other Viking friends, sets her mind on turning Royce the Saxon Lord into her heart mate. You find yourself cheering her on as she battles wills with Royce at every turn. The characters are very likable. You feel for Royce who lost so much during a previous Viking raid and can understand his hatred towards the Vikings. You admire Kirsten for being such a strong and outspoken women. I was a little disappointed that some of the other characters you get to know in the book just disappear out of the story. All in all though I could not put this book down. Great Job once again JL. I definitely recommend reading "Fires of Winter" first.
my favorite JL so far!.......2007-02-13
I loved this book! Definitely my favorite JL besides the Malory novels.
Easy to read with none of the usual misunderstandings and separation of the main characters.
One for the Keeper Shelf.......2006-12-09
Vikings and Lindsey - an unbeatable combination!
If you haven't yet read this delightful book, it's truly one not to be missed.
Exciting!.......2006-11-12
"Hearts Aflame" is fast paced and satisfying. You truly have to read this one. The romance is set in 800s. Vikings, Saxons, Danes and Celts take you way back on the exiting journey of fortune, love and luck. I could not put this one down!
I've read it twice...best of it's genre.......2006-09-04
The Viking tales are some of Lindsey's best. This book is only second to it's prequel, Fires of Winter, another excellent read. I actually own the trilogy, though Surrender my Love is a little disappointing.

life impacting Bible Study.......2005-06-13
An incredible Bible study!! In all my years of teaching the Bible in both Protestant and now the Catholic church I have never had a study that has left such an impression,an almost indelible mark not only on the class but also on the teacher. One can feel almost from the very beginning the moving of the Holy Spirit.
This study of Genesis brings you right into the holy of holies. Your encounter with the God of creation ushers in a reverential awe. You get a glimpse behind the veil of this God of Glory who is fathomless in his mercy and unconditional in His love
In His creation of man we become acutely aware of the dignity of our personhood. That even though man was created from the dust of the earth we are God's work of art. This study propells in us the desire to be all the God has designed for us to be.
Yes, we agonize over the fall of man but we are able through all that fog to see that God's Glory still prevails and the end result will be far better than the first.
This Bible study is not only holy and hallowed, but entirely addictive! We cannot wait for Part 2.
An Inspired Bible Study.......2005-06-12
Eight women from a charismatic community began a study of the Bible using Genesis Part I: God and His Creation. Our enthusiasm in the first few weeks caused others to join us and our group grew to 14. Then a second study group started and now three more groups are planning to start in the fall. The excitement for this book continues to grow.
Using the easy-to-follow format laid out in the book, our group has grown closer to God and to each other. It is a great tool for building Christ-centered relationships! The following are comments from some of the other participants in our group:
"This study made the Bible real. For the first time, I found myself actually relating to the people in the Bible. They are real, imperfect people...just like us."
"I was excited that the authors used the Catechism of the Catholic Church to integrate the Old Testament with the New Testament and Marian Doctrine."
"This is an inspired Bible Study that allows the Holy Spirit to work. It is a life-changing experience."
"I have done Bible studies forever. This is the first study that made me really get excited about the Scriptures. It is an interactive study."
"In other Bible studies I have attended, you go and listen to someone tell you about the Bible. In this study, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, you work through the verses and share them with your group. The Scriptures come alive!"
"This study was a cooperative effort between me, the Holy Spirit, and the others in our group."
"Gayle Somers's questions and format makes it easy to enter into the Scriptures and to hear God."
"Before doing this study, Genesis was my least favorite book of the Bible. While we were doing the study, I realized there was so much there that I'd never seen before! The Scriptures became real for me."
Bravo! A study that brings Scripture alive!.......2005-06-07
Gayle Somers and Sarah Christmyer enlightened my understanding of many of the familiar Biblical stories of Genesis, such as the Creation, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, Noah and the Flood, and the Tower of Babel. The authors were able to enhance my insights into the teachings of the Catholic Church and the practical application of Scripture into my daily life. Despite the thousands of elapsed years since the Scripture was written, it still remains a tangible and contemporary manifestation of God's love and mercy for each of us. I encourage everyone to make the time in their busy lives to embrace this study as its reward is immeasurable!
Finally, a substantive text-based AND Catholic Bible study.......2005-06-06
I have not only read this wonderful Bible study, but have been both a participant and a facilitator in our parish's use of this study of Genesis.
As a lifelong cradle Catholic, with a renewed desire to grow in our faith, it has been a blessing for me to study Genesis like this, with constant references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and salvation history. This study nourished my soul, my heart, and my intellect. It fostered understanding and a deeper relationship with Our Lord, while at the same time creating a sense of fellowship and community with the other ladies in the study.
I recommend this book to individuals and parishes! Until the first time I began this Hearts Aflame Genesis study, I had participated primarily in interdenominational (mostly Protestant) Bible studies because so many of the Catholic Bible studies I had tried lacked substance and relied greatly on the `What does this say to you?' approach. It is wonderful to find a substantive, and very Catholic Bible study. The blue-print to the purpose driven life, and the meaning of life is all there in Genesis. Ms. Somers, and Ms. Christmyer decode it in a way that is acessible, engaging and well-written. I highly recommend this book!
A wonderful study from a Catholic perspective.......2005-03-10
The authors of a new Catholic scripture study series contend that although we may "study" the Bible, ultimately scripture is a "place of encounter" with God. In the first of their planned series, Gayle Somers and Sarah Christmyer offer a comprehensive look at the first eleven chapters of the book of Genesis from both an intellectual and a relational perspective. These opening pages of the Bible are examined from a uniquely Catholic frame of reference, in light of Catholic tradition and Church teachings. Intended for either group or individual study, Genesis Part I: God and His Creation (Emmaus Road Publishing, November 2004, paperback, 140 pages) features a ten lesson study. A complete appendix on the reading of the first chapter of Genesis, and lesson summaries and guides are also included.
A few years ago, as the sole Catholic in an interfaith Bible study group, I would have welcomed this resource for its wonderful emphasis on Catholic fundamentals, the Catechism, the sacraments and overall Church teaching. Whether you're looking to embark on a new dedication to the discipline of scripture study, or to enhance your current knowledge of the book of Genesis, the Hearts Aflame series is to be commended.

Awesome!!.......2007-08-22
This is the 3rd book by Black that I have read and as with the others I was not disappointed. The story and character development was great and helped to draw you into the story. As I have found with Black's other books, she is great at her descriptions and details of the surroundings and key events in the book. This is a must read.

Your heart aflame - daily!.......2000-04-18
"In this book you will find select readings from John Calvin's Commentary on the Psalms. It provides us with a year's worth of rewarding daily meditations.
John Calvin described the Psalms as "an anatomy of all the parts of the soul. "The description is an apt one, says Sinclair B. Ferguson in the foreward to this volume, "since every experience, every emotion, all the heights and depths, all the joys and sorrows, all the mysteries of human life, are here." Reading this on a daily basis can hardly fail to bring you spiritual health and strength. And you will come to love both the Psalms and Calvin better before the year is ended."
Excerpt: Blessed is the man: The meaning of the Psalmist is that is shall be always well with God's devout servants, whose constant endeavour it is to make progress in the study of his law. He teaches us how impossible it is for anyone to apply his mind to meditation upon God's law, who has not first withdrawn and separated himself from the society of the ungodly.

The Most Balanced Theological View On The Holy Spirit!.......2000-04-24
Dr. Alan Schreck's book on the Holy Spirit is highly recommended for all Catholics who wanted to gain a deeper insight on the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. After searching for a book like this, I thank the Lord for such a wonderful book! It has aroused a deeper appreciation and devotional love towards the Spirit of God in my life after reading it in just one sitting! Though written from the Catholic perspective, this book should also be read also by non-Catholics who wanted a balanced view on the Spirit from the Church's perspective. It is readable and written in understandable user-friendly language, and contains footnotes that will help the reader search for more about the person and work of the Spirit. This book made me appreciate the role of the Spirit in the Church, in the past, in the present and also in the near future. I like Dr. Screck's topic on the connection between Mary and the Spirit. I gained many wonderful insights too regarding the Spirit's influence in the lives of saints. This book will surely set our hearts aflame for the love of the Spirit!
