John Irving wishes. That he could be as mordantly funny as Elizabeth Gilbert, that is. With the publication of her first novel, Stern Men, Gilbert has been widely compared to New England's unofficial novelist laureate. And the comparison is a natural; this writer gives us a tough, lovable heroine against an iconoclastic, rural backdrop. Ruth Thomas grows up on Fort Niles Island, off the coast of Maine, among lobstermen, lobster boats, and, well, lobsters. There's just not much out there besides ocean. Abandoned by her mother, she lives sometimes with her dad and sometimes with her beautiful neighbor, Mrs. Pommeroy, and the seven idiot Pommeroy boys. Eventually she is plucked from obscurity by the wealthy Ellises--vacationers on Fort Niles for some hundred years--and sent, against her will, to a fancy boarding school in Delaware. (Sorting out her relationship with this highly manipulative family is one of the novel's crooked joys.) Now she has returned, and is casting about for something to do.

What Ruth does (hang around with her eccentric island friends, fall in love, organize the lobstermen) makes for an engaging book that's all the more charming for its rather lumpy, slow-paced plotting. Gilbert delivers a kind of delicious ethnography of lobster-fishing culture, if such a thing is possible, as well as a love story and a bildungsroman. But best of all, she possesses an ear for the ridiculous ways people communicate. One of Mrs. Pommeroy's young sons, "in addition to having the local habit of not pronouncing r at the end of a word--could not say any word that started with r.... What's more, for a long time everyone on Fort Niles Island imitated him. Over the whole spread of the island, you could hear the great strong fishermen complaining that they had to mend their wopes or fix their wigging or buy a new short-wave wadio."

The beauty of Gilbert's book is that she gives us an isolated rural culture, and refuses to settle for finding humor in its backwardness. Instead she gives us a community of uneducated but razor-sharp wits, and produces an impressive comic debut. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

On two remote islands off the coast of Maine, the local lobstermen have fought savagely for generations over the fishing rights to the ocean waters between them. Young Ruth Thomas is born into this feud, the daughter of one of the greediest lobstermen in Maine. Eighteen years old, as smart as a whip, and irredeemably unromantic, Ruth returns home from boarding school determined to throw her education overboard and join the "stern men." As the feud escalates, she helps work the lobster boats, brushes up on her profanity, and eventually falls for Owney Wishnell, a handsome young lobsterman. "Funny, clever and wise" (Seattle Times), STERN MEN captures a feisty American spirit through this unforgettable heroine who is destined for greatness despite herself.

Ruthie got me. This story delivers as well as her seven stones-- and I am not going to spoil the tale for another reader. Just read it.

5 out of 5 stars From an experienced lobster friend!.......2007-08-01

I enjoyed Stern Men very much! It was light, humorous, edgy. I loved how the family story evolved, and Ruth was a convincing teenager full of age-appropriate angst, disdain and insecurity. Having family on coastal Maine, I loved the lobster logic! The facts begining each chapter brought a serious mood that was lightened up by the community characters. This is a perfect vacation novel.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2003-09-28

How can anyone give 5 stars to this book? It started well enough, but midway through the book I had lost interest, and worse, I began to really dislike Ruth. Ms Gilbert has the potential to be a good writer, but this is not a good book.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been great, but.............2003-07-23

For those who were looking for another Gerald Warner Brace, you will be disappointed in the content but not in the writing style of Ms Gilbert. This could have been a great book.

For those who can identify with the folk who inhabit the costal towns and villages of New England, you will be pleased with the character descriptions provided in the book. The problem is not the idea of the story, nor the writing style. The problem is the emphasis placed on certain characters and activities that in the end did not matter and may have offended those of us who remember the books by G.W. Brace.

I hope Ms Gilbert will try again.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, Engrossing, Excellent.......2002-06-19

A really fine new novel which I picked up after reading a favorable review in the NYT---and I've enjoyed the read. It's the story of an island off the coast of Maine (a fictionalized Vinalhaven, I think), mostly about the coming-of-age of Ruth Thomas, tenously-descended from the granite-quarry-owning rich family which once ran the island. It reminds me somewhat of the Bennett's Island novels by Elisabeth Ogilvie, but Stern Men has a much more modern setting and feeling. We certainly hear enough about the history of the island, its rivalry with its neighbors, and the ongoing "lobster wars" of its fishermen, but the characters are so intriguing and eccentric, the storytelling so solid, that it certainly never feels like an historical novel--nor does it feel like a romanticizing of a "vanishing way of life" and all that bushwah. These folks are grittily involved in making a buck and getting on with their lives.

I liked it as well as The Beans of Egypt, Maine or The Funeral Makers or Strong for Potatoes, all fine novels dealing with middle-to-lower-class Maine characters. A welcome addition to the genre.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Resurrection.......2006-03-25

The death of Jean/Phoenix on the moon in UXM # 137 was one of the most emotional moments in the history of the X-men. It was a great story and a lovely conclusion. As one of my favorite characters, I'd still have preferred to have a proper burial for Jean and the emotional story intact rather then digging her up and putting her in X-factor for the sake of making a splash. It also establishes the first hideous convolutions of the Phoenix story, establishing that Jean Grey actually merged with a cosmic entity on the shuttle while leaving her old body behind in a coccoon in the Hudson. This is the beginning of the many complications of the Phoenix concept, once extremely elegant.

Thankfully they have moved towards a cleaner and simpler explanation in recent years with Grant Morrison's New X-men and Greg Pak's Phoenix: Endsong.

5 out of 5 stars Jean Grey returns from the dead!.......2004-08-26

X-Men : Phoenix Rising ressurects one of the most important characters in the Marvel Universe, Jean Grey! the book features the Avengers,Fantastic Four, and X-Factor.the graphic novel features art by John Buscema, John Byrne, and Jackson Guice. the story was written by Rogern Stern, John Byrne, and Bob Layton. the book tells you the explanation on how Jean Grey was ressurected and how she formed X-Factor with the Original X-Men! Jean Grey is my favorite character in the Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, and X-Factor comics. The introduction is written by Kurt Busiek, he was the writer responsible for Jean Grey's return to the Marvel Universe! Highest Possible Reconmmendation!

4 out of 5 stars Phoenix's First Resurrection.......2004-03-02

To many, this is the story that ruined the X-Men. That is understandable. To many, the classic death of Jean Grey/Phoenix on the moon at the end of the "Dark Phoenix Saga" is not something to be tampered with. Therefore, when Marvel decided to resurrect Jean for the formation of X-Factor in the mid-1980s, many felt cheated. They felt that this story cheapened the original "death". For me, I'm glad that Jean is alive again (although she's dead again in the recent Grant Morrison X-Men run, I was told!). I felt that this story opened up so many story possibilities - especially the emotional tug-of-war that Cyclops, then married to Jean-lookalike, Madelyne Pryor, had to face.

The problem with many comic fans is that they can't seem to see beyond the "scandal" or "controversy". For example, the Batman story, "A Death in the Family". Everytime you hear fans discussing that storyline, they have to bring in the controversial decision that D.C. made at that time to set up a 1-800 number for people to call in voting whether to let Robin live or die. Seeing beyond that little piece of marketing ploy, the story by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo is pretty tight and solid. Same thing here. Jean Grey lives. The Phoenix entity that died on the moon was a different person altogether (therefore, Jean is not guilty of the crimes committed by Dark Phoenix). If the fans would just take time to examine the story carefully, they would find this a solid book to begin with.

Firstly, we have the issue from Avengers wherein the cocoon holding Jean underwater is found. The fans also screamed when they discovered this - Jean's resurrection taking place in "Avengers" rather than "Uncanny X-Men". But then that was the time when Jim Shooter was head at Marvel and continuity BETWEEN the books was very tight (unlike the current no-continuity nu-Marvel). I, for one, do not see a problem with that. And I'm thankful to see again the work of Roger Stern, John Buscema and Tom Palmer, whom I consider the best Avengers creators ever (check out their work on "Avengers: Under Siege" to see what I mean). The second part of the storyline takes place in "Fantastic Four" and it's largely written and drawn by John Byrne. Great flashback scenes here explain in detail what really happened to Jean and Phoenix in "X-Men #101". I was told that Chris Claremont tampered a little with this story and some panels were redrawn by Jackson Guice. This, of course, contributed to Byrne's finally leaving the FF soon after. The best part of the book, and also the part that packs the most emotional punch is the last chapter - a reprint of X-Factor #1. Bob Layton writes and Jackson Guice pencils this tale of how Jean's closest pals/lovers, namely, the original X-Men, react to her being alive again.

Reading this carefully, one can see the seeds being planted for future storylines in the X-books like "Inferno" and "X-cutioner's Song". Scott is pushed to the limit emotionally and ends up a wreck, abandoning his wife Madelyne and son, Nathan. The original five X-Men, including Jean, forms X-Factor. The last panel with Madelyne discovering Scott's "unfaithfulness" on TV (in an X-Factor ad) is priceless.

Lastly, this book comes with an Introduction by Kurt Busiek, who had the guts to claim credit for coming up with the idea of Jean's resurrection in the first place. Overall solid writing and art throughout. Long live Jean...

4 out of 5 stars Essential.......2003-09-04

The entire Phoenix Saga is by far the most compelling story line in Marvel's history. This graphic novel is unfortunately missing several issues that follow the supposed death of Jean Grey (which would leave some newbie readers a little lost). It also does not end with any sense of closure as "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Inferno" graphic novels did.

There isn't a lot of action here as you would find with most other X-Men graphic novels. However, this is an important link in the chain of Phoenix-related events. The development of the characters and the twisting of the plot is unmatched. No true fan can deny that this paricular era of Marvel's history was the finest in comic story-telling. The art is superb and the depth of the characters is what REALLY makes this worth reading.

Discover the complexity of Jean's revival. Watch the unravelling of Scott and Madelyn's marriage. See the forming of a new superhero team. Witness a woman's descent into madness... "Phoenix Rising" is an essential part of any worth-while collection.

4 out of 5 stars A few things missing, but still good........2003-08-18

Short and to the point, this novel depicts the return of Jean Grey and the creation of X-Factor by the original X-Men. It is a very well done story, but it was definitely missing a few cogs. It should have included X-Men #201, which depicts why Cyclops left the X-men. A few segments from Defenders #152, which show why Angel, Beast, and Iceman were ready to retire would have been a huge plus. (Not the entire issue, however, as most of the comic was not that good.) Still, a nice job.

3 out of 5 stars Flight of Ideas.......2006-04-17

The book starts off well enough with the division of epistemology into a analytical form with the author calls masculine and an intuitive form he calls feminine. He than tries to show the abandonment of the feminine form starting with the dualism of Desecrate to Schopenhauer but than gets side tracked from his theme by Sartre. I had to stop reading by the time he got to Goethe.

3 out of 5 stars A very good comparison of difference in methods of knowing.......1999-09-19

In Flight from Woman, psychiatrist Karl Stern gives a penetrating description of several modern philosophers from Rene Descartes to Jean Paul Sartre, and presents a fascinating contrast with the classical ways of knowing, which included poetry and religious faith. He does this drawing upon personal insights from a lifetime of practising psychiatry.

    Book Description

In this study of gender relations in late colonial Mexico (ca. 1760-1821), Steve Stern analyzes the historical connections between gender, power, and politics in the lives of peasants, Indians, and other marginalized peoples. Through vignettes of everyday life, he challenges assumptions about gender relations and political culture in a patriarchal society. He also reflects on continuity and change between late colonial times and the present and suggests a paradigm for understanding similar struggles over gender rights in Old Regime societies in Europe and the Americas.

Stern pursues three major arguments. First, he demonstrates that non-elite women and men developed contending models of legitimate gender authority and that these differences sparked bitter struggles over gender right and obligation. Second, he reveals connections, in language and social dynamics, between disputes over legitimate authority in domestic and familial matters and disputes in the arenas of community and state power. The result is a fresh interpretation of the gendered dynamics of peasant politics, community, and riot. Third, Stern examines regional and ethnocultural variation and finds that his analysis transcends particular locales and ethnic subgroupings within Mexico. The historical arguments and conceptual sweep of Stern's book will inform not only students of Mexico and Latin America but also students of gender in the West and other world regions.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing research--a MUST-READ for gender scholars and scholars who hate 'gender'.......2006-03-14

For those who love 'gender' as a lens through which to analyze other social processes (warfare, citizenship, empire- or nation- formation, etc.) this may not be the book for you: this is an actual analysis of Gender itself. The author looks at the relations between men and women in peasant communities in Mexico, using concrete examples of real families that went through the justice system. But not just husbands-wives--he addresses daughters-parents (mother/father), sisters-brothers, AND fathers-sons, brothers-brothers... Priests-parishioners... he really looks at patriarchy as a system that organized society NOT as static and merely oppressive, but dynamic and unstable. And he looks at how patriarchy not only organized men-women relations, but relations between the rich and poor AND politics and power, in the most convincing way I have read so far. It's GREAT in that regard--but getting through the INSANELY NUMEROUS examples and statistics gets pretty tiresome...

Written by one of America's finest contemporary novelists, Other Men's Daughters is the story of an intense love affair between a middle-aged professor and a young woman, wise and worldly beyond her years.

One reviewer writes, "I...was struck not simply by its psychological depth but particularly by the combination of toughness and tenderness through which romantic love was represented and discussed. The lack of sentimentality (in a novel about the refusal to live a life without love) was immensely important to me...and is likely ...to be immensely important ...today."

When Alex mistakenly arrests headstrong Bess McNee for siliciting, she decides the sexy detective is perfect - for her research . . . and for herself. Now all that's left is Convincing Alex.

          5 out of 5 stars Heart warming.......2007-03-12

This is a wonderful book. Another great series from Nora Roberts. One word of advise....you have to read Taming Natasha then switch to Luring a Lady and Convincing Alex then read Falling for Rachel to get the stories in order. Afterward, there are 2 more books related to these...Waiting for Nick (Rachel's brother-in-law) and Considering Kate (Natasha's daughter. Reflections and Dreams (Dance of Dreams in particular) is yet another related book with Nickolai Davidov from Considering Kate. Dance to the Piper as well as the O'Hurley's books connect through as well. This is quite a confusing but fun set of books.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars .......2006-10-01

Great book both stories were really good. Mikhail and Sydney made a great couple as did Alexi and Bess. All four charactors were very well written. The women were strong, funny and very different. Sydney was trying hard to fill her grandfather's shoes even though no one thinks she can do it. Mikhail's been living in a SOHO apartment building that's falling a part.
Bess was a soap opera writer who went the extra mile in researching her stories including pretting to be a hooker in which she was arrested by Alexi who was a cop. I loved how she saw the good in everything. Mikhail and Alexi were very great strong but different brothers. The romance in each story was perfect.

5 out of 5 stars DANG...! steamy, hot and just wow.......2006-02-10

          Wonderful
I just read about the Stanislaski Brothers and loved it. Nora Roberts is a very talented writer. You come away from the book wishing you had these two either as a brother or husband. Great details and wonderful humor. Can't wait to read the next books about the Stanislaski family. And i must say don't they have a beautiful family....
